On large angular scales, CMB polarization depends mostly on the evolution of the ionization level of the IGM during reionization. In order to avoid biasing parameter estimates, an accurate and model independent approach to reionization is needed when analyzing high precision data, like those expected from the Planck experiment. In this paper we consider two recently proposed methods of fitting for reionization and we discuss their respective advantages. We test both methods by performing a MonteCarlo Markov Chain analysis of simulated Planck data, assuming different fiducial reionization histories. We take into account both temperature and polarization data up to high multipoles, and we fit for both reionization and non reionization parameters. We find that while a wrong assumption on reionization may bias τ_e, A_s and r by 1-3 standard deviations, other parameters, in particular n_s, are not significantly biased. The additional reionization parameters introduced by considering the model independent methods do not affect the accuracy of the estimates of the main cosmological parameters, the biggest degradation being of order ~ 15% for τ_e. Finally, we show that neglecting Helium contribution in the analysis increases the bias on τ_e, r and A_s even when a general fitting approach to reionization is assumed.
We represent the reionization history of the universe as a free function in redshift and study the potential for its extraction from CMB polarization spectra. From a principal component analysis, we show that the ionization history information is contained in 5 modes, resembling low-order Fourier modes in redshift space. The amplitude of these modes represent a compact description of the observable properties of reionization in the CMB, easily predicted given a model for the ionization fraction. Measurement of these modes can ultimately constrain the total optical depth, or equivalently the in…
We use numerical simulation of cosmological reionization to calculate the secondary CMB anisotropies in a representative flat low density cosmological model. We show that the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (scattering off of moving electrons in the ionized intergalactic medium) is dominated by the nonlinear hydrodynamic and gravitational evolution of the density and velocity fields, rather than the detailed distribution of the ionization fraction (``patchy reionization'') on all angular scales. Combining our results with the recent calculation of secondary CMB anisotropies by Springel et al…
The WMAP first year detection of a high redshift reionization through its imprints on CMB anisotropy T and TE mode angular power spectra calls for a better comprehension of the universe ionization and thermal history after the standard recombination. Different reionization mechanisms predict different signatures in the CMB, both in temperature and polarization anisotropies and in spectral distortions. The Planck capability to distinguish among different scenarios through its sensitivity to T, TE, and E mode angular power spectra is discussed. Perspectives open by future high sensitivity experi…
We use the recent CMB power spectrum measurement by the Maxima experiment (Hanany et al. 2000) to constrain the redshift of reionization z_re. This becomes possible by combining the CMB data with cosmological parameters from various independent measurements, including Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and X-ray cluster data. Most notably, our results provide a robust lower bound on z_re. We find that z_re>15 (8) at the 68% (95%) confidence level, unless the Hubble constant is larger than 75 km/s/Mpc.
The first-year WMAP data release showed that the reionization optical depth to CMB photons is greater than previously thought. This follows from unexpectedly high values of the C^TE_l spectrum, for l up to ~30, presumably allowing a measurement of the E-mode polarization spectrum C^E_l sooner than expected. This note aims to test the capability of large-angle polarization experiments to explore the history of the cosmological reionization, considering also the impact of cosmic variance. In particular, here we discuss how well the ionized fraction x_e and the reionization redshift z_r can be se…
We study CMB secondary anisotropies produced by inhomogeneous reionization by means of cosmological simulations coupled with the radiative transfer code CRASH. The reionization history is consistent with the WMAP Thomson optical depth determination. We find that the signal arising from this process dominates over the primary CMB component for l > 4000 and reaches a maximum amplitude of l(l+1)C_l/2π~ 1.6 x 10^{-13} on arcmin scale, i.e. l as large as several thousands. We then cross-correlate secondary CMB anisotropy maps with neutral hydrogen 21cm line emission fluctuations obtained from the s…
In this paper we show how the rescattering of CMB photons after cosmic reionization can give a significant linear contribution to the temperature-matter cross-correlation measurements. These anisotropies, which arise via a late time Doppler effect, are on scales much larger than the typical scale of non-linear effects at reionization; they can contribute to degree scale cross-correlations and could affect the interpretation of similar correlations resulting from the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. While expected to be small at low redshifts, these correlations can be large given a probe of the …
We summarize existing constraints on the epoch of reionization and discuss the observational probes that are sensitive to the process. We focus on the role large scale polarization can play. Polarization probes the integrated optical depth across the entire epoch of reionization. Future missions such as Planck and CMBPol will greatly enhance our knowledge of the reionization history, allowing us to measure the time evolution of the ionization fraction. As large scale polarization probes high redshift activity, it can best constrain models where the Universe was fully or partially ionized at ea…
We investigate two sets of two-epoched reionization models and their manifestation in the CMB anisotropy and polarization data of the recent WMAP project and make some predictions for the future PLANCK missions. In the first set of models, the universe was reionized twice, first at z~15 by population III stars and then at z~6 by stars in large galaxies. In the second set of models, the extra peak-like reionization at high redshifts z > 100 is induced by the decay of unstable particles, followed by the standard picture of reionization at z~6. We examine the general properties of these two-epoch…
We investigate the impact of spatial variations in the ionized fraction during reionization on temperature anisotropies in the CMB. We combine simulations of large scale structure to describe the underlying density field with an analytic model based on extended Press-Schechter theory to track the reionization process. We find that the power spectrum of the induced CMB anisotropies depends sensitively on the character of the reionization epoch. Models that differ in the extent of the "patchy phase" could be distinguished by future experiments such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and th…
Estimates of inflationary parameters from the CMB B-mode polarization spectrum on the largest scales depend on knowledge of the reionization history, especially at low tensor-to-scalar ratio. Assuming an incorrect reionization history in the analysis of such polarization data can strongly bias the inflationary parameters. One consequence is that the single-field slow-roll consistency relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and tensor tilt might be excluded with high significance even if this relation holds in reality. We explain the origin of the bias and present case studies with various …
The bulk of the hydrogen in the universe transformed from neutral to ionized somewhere in the redshift interval 5 < z < 40, most likely due to ionizing photons produced by an early generation of stars or mini-quasars. The resulting free electrons, interacting with the CMB photons via Thomson scattering, are a mixed blessing, providing both a probe of the epoch of the first stars and a contaminant to the pristine primary anisotropy. Here we review our current knowledge of reionization with emphasis on inhomogeneities and describe the possible connections to CMB anisotropy.
Spectroscopic studies of high-redshift objects and increasingly precise data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are beginning to independently place strong complementary bounds on the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Parameter estimation from current CMB data continues, however, to be subject to several degeneracies. Here, we focus on those degeneracies in CMB parameter forecasts related to the optical depth to reionization. We extend earlier work on the mutual constraints that such analyses of CMB data and a reionization model may place on each other to a more general parameter set, and …
We study contributions from inhomogeneous (patchy) reionization to arcminute scale ($1000 < \ell < 10,000$) cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. We show that inhomogeneities in the ionization fraction, rather than in the mean density, dominate both the temperature and the polarization power spectra. Depending on the ionization history and the clustering bias of the ionizing sources, we find that rms temperature fluctuations range from 2 $μ$K to 8 $μ$K and the corresponding values for polarization are over two orders of magnitude smaller. Reionization can significantly bias cosmologi…
The observational tests for the period of reionization of the universe are discussed. We show that this period can be observed as {\it negative} intensity patches of the CMB radiation with the amplitude $δT/T\sim 10^{-5}$ and the angular sizes $θ_T\sim$10 angular seconds in range of the wavelength 0.1 cm$\leqλ\leq$1 cm. The expected number density and frequency dependence of the amplitude permit to recognize this effect and to discriminate it from the noise. This method applied to the small scale variations of CMB temperature complements well the traditional spectral approach. The number densi…
In a universe reionized in patches, the Doppler effect from Thomson scattering off free electrons generates secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. For a simple model with small patches and late reionization, we analytically calculate the anisotropy power spectrum. Patchy reionization can, in principle, be the main source of anisotropies on arcminute scales. On larger angular scales, its contribution to the CMB power spectrum is a small fraction of the primary signal and is only barely detectable in the power spectrum with even an ideal, i.e. cosmic variance limited, experime…
On large angular scales, the polarization of the CMB contains information about the evolution of the average ionization during the epoch of reionization. Interpretation of the polarization spectrum usually requires the assumption of a fixed functional form for the evolution, e.g. instantaneous reionization. We develop a model-independent method where a small set of principal components completely encapsulate the effects of reionization on the large-angle E-mode polarization for any reionization history within an adjustable range in redshift. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, we apply thi…
We show how the morphological analysis of the maps of the secondary CMB anisotropies can detect an extended period of ``smoldering'' reionization, during which the universe remains partially ionized. Neither radio observations of the redshifted 21cm line nor IR observations of the redshifted Lyman-alpha forest will be able to detect such a period. The most sensitive to this kind of non-gaussianity parameters are the number of regions in the excursion set, the perimeter of the excursion set, and the genus of the largest (by area) region. For example, if the universe reionized fully at z=6, but …
We investigate the role of the radiative effects for the temporal evolution of the reionization fraction by using cosmological Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. We find that the increase of photo-ionization and photo-heating rates due to optical depth effects results in a significantly contribute to the heating of the IGM before and during the reionization. The main effect of the UV radiation spectrum on the temporal evolution of the ionization fraction is given by the value of the reionization redshift and the redshift interval, in which the reionization is completed. We evalua…
At the epoch of reionization, when the high-redshift inter-galactic medium (IGM) is being enriched with metals, the 63.2 micron fine structure line of OI is pumped by the ~ 1300 AA soft UV background and introduces a spectral distortion in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Here we use a toy model for the spatial distribution of neutral oxygen, assuming metal bubbles surround dark matter halos, and compute the fluctuations of this distortion, and the angular power spectrum it imprints on the CMB. We discuss the dependence of the power spectrum on the velocity of the winds polluting the IGM…
We calculate the secondary anisotropies in the CMB produced by inhomogeneous reionization from simulations in which the effects of radiative and stellar feedback effects on galaxy formation have been included. This allows to self-consistently determine the beginning ($z_i\approx 30$), the duration ($ δz\approx 20$) and the (nonlinear) evolution of the reionization process for a critical density CDM model. In addition, from the simulated spatial distribution of ionized regions, we are able to calculate the evolution of the two-point ionization correlation function, $C_χ$, and obtain the power s…
We show that the epoch(s) of reionization when the ionization fraction of the universe is about half can be determined by correlating Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps with 21-cm line maps at degree scales ($l\sim 100$). During reionization peculiar motion of free electrons induces the Doppler anisotropy of the CMB, while density fluctuations of neutral hydrogen induce the 21-cm line anisotropy. In our simplified model of inhomogeneous reionization, a positive correlation arises as the universe reionizes whereas a negative correlation arises as it recombines; thus, the sign of…
We discuss upcoming opportunities with cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations during the post-WMAP era. The curl-modes of CMB polarization probe inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs). While a significant source of confusion is expected from cosmic shear conversion of polarization related to density perturbations, higher resolution observations of CMB anisotropies can be used for a lensing reconstruction and to separate gravitational-wave polarization signature from that of lensing. Separations based on current lensing reconstruction techniques allow the possibility to probe inflation…
We study the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in cold and mixed dark matter (CDM and MDM) models, with non scale-invariant primordial power spectra (i.e. $n \neq 1$) and a late, sudden reionization of the intergalactic medium at redshift $z_{rh}$. We test these models against recent detections of CMB anisotropy at large and intermediate angular scales. We find that current CMB anisotropy measurements cannot discriminate between CDM and MDM models. Our likelihood analysis indicates that models with blue power spectra ($n \simeq 1.2$) and a reionization at $z_{rh} \sim 20$ are…
We consider the pumping of the $63.2 μ$m fine structure line of neutral OI in the high--redshift intergalactic medium (IGM), in analogy with the Wouthuysen--Field effect for the 21cm line of cosmic HI. We show that the soft UV background at $\sim 1300$Åcan affect the population levels, and if a significant fraction of the IGM volume is filled with ``fossil HII regions'' containing neutral OI, then this can produce a non--negligible spectral distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). OI from redshift $z$ is seen in emission at $(1+z)63.2μ$m, and between $7<z<10$ produces a mean spectr…
The inhomogeneous ionization state of the universe when the first sources of ionizing radiation appeared should lead to anisotropies in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. We use cosmological simulations of the process by which the first sources ionized the intergalactic medium to study the induced polarization anisotropies. We find that the polarization anisotropies have rms of order ~0.01 μK, and local peak values of ~0.1 μK, smaller than those due to gravitational lensing on small scales. The polarization direction is highly coherent over degree scales. This directional coh…
The recent discovery of a high optical depth tau to Thomson scattering from the WMAP data implies that significant reionization took place at redshifts z~15. This discovery has important implications for the sources of reionization, and allows, for the first time, constraints to be placed on physical reionization scenarios out to redshift z~20. Using a new suite of semi-analytic reionization models, we show that the high value of tau requires a surprisingly high efficiency epsilon of the first generation of UV sources for injecting ionizing photons into the intergalactic medium. We find that n…
In light of the recent inference of a high optical depth to Thomson scattering, tau, from the WMAP data we investigate the effects of extended periods of partial ionization and ask if the value of tau inferred by assuming a single sharp transition is an unbiased estimate. We construct and consider several representative ionization models and evaluate their signatures in the CMB. If tau is estimated with a single sharp transition we show that there can be a significant bias in the derived value (and therefore a bias in sigma8 as well). For WMAP noise levels the bias in tau is smaller than the s…
During the transition from a neutral to a fully reionized universe, scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons via free-electrons leads to a new anisotropy contribution to the temperature distribution. If the reionization process is inhomogeneous and patchy, the era of reionization is also visible via brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm line emission from neutral Hydrogen. Since regions containing electrons and neutral Hydrogen are expected to trace the same underlying density field, the two are (anti) correlated and this is expected to be reflected in the …
The free-electron population during the reionized epoch rescatters CMB temperature quadrupole and generates a now well-known polarization signal at large angular scales. While this contribution has been detected in the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum measured with WMAP data, due to the large cosmic variance associated with anisotropy measurements at tens of degree angular scales only limited information related to reionization, such as the optical depth to electron scattering, can be extracted. The inhomogeneities in the free-electron population lead to an additional secondary po…
We study the constraints that future multifrequency Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments will be able to set on the metal enrichment history of the Inter Galactic Medium at the epoch of reionisation. We forecast the signal to noise ratio for the detection of the signal introduced in the CMB by resonant scattering off metals at the end of the Dark Ages. We take into account systematics associated to inter-channel calibration, PSF reconstruction errors and innacurate foreground removal. We develop an algorithm to optimally extract the signal generated by metals during reionisation and t…
We study contributions to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum from non-Gaussianity induced by secondary anisotropies during reionization. Large-scale structure in the reionized epoch both gravitational lenses CMB photons and produces Doppler shifts in their temperature from scattering off electrons in infall. The resulting correlation is potentially observable through the CMB bispectrum. The second-order Ostriker-Vishniac also couples to a variety of linear secondary effects to produce a bispectrum. For the currently favored flat cosmological model with a low matter content and sm…
Of the many probes of reionization, the 21 cm line and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are among the most effective. We examine how the cross-correlation of the 21 cm brightness and the CMB Doppler fluctuations on large angular scales can be used to study this epoch. We employ a new model of the growth of large scale fluctuations of the ionized fraction as reionization proceeds. We take into account the peculiar velocity field of baryons and show that its effect on the cross correlation can be interpreted as a mixing of Fourier modes. We find that the cross-correlation signal is strongly…
We introduce a new statistical technique for extracting the inhomogeneous reionization signal from future high-sensitivity measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization fields. If reionization is inhomogeneous, then the optical depth to recombination will be a function tau(n) of position on the sky. Anisotropies in tau(n) alter the statistics of the observed CMB via several physical mechanisms: screening of the surface of last scattering, generation of new polarization via Thomson scattering from reionization bubbles, and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We…
Current data of high-redshift absorption-line systems imply that hydrogen reionization occurred before redshifts of about 5. Previous works on reionization by the first stars or quasars have shown that such scenarios are described by a large number of cosmological and astrophysical parameters. Here, we adopt a semi-analytic model of stellar reionization in order to quantify how the optical depth to reionization depends on such parameters, and combine this with constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find this approach to be particularly useful in alleviating the well-known d…
The recent discovery of a Gunn--Peterson (GP) trough in the spectrum of the redshift 6.28 SDSS quasar has raised the tantalizing possibility that we have detected the reionization of the universe. However, a neutral fraction (of hydrogen) as small as 0.1% is sufficient to cause the GP trough, hence its detection alone cannot rule out reionization at a much earlier epoch. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization anisotropy offers an alternative way to explore the dark age of the universe. We show that for most models constrained by the current CMB data and by the discovery of a GP tro…
We present a detailed analysis of present and future Cosmic Microwave Background constraints of the value of the fine-structure constant, $α$. We carry out a more detailed analysis of the WMAP first-year data, deriving state-of-the-art constraints on $α$ and discussing various other issues, such as the possible hints for the running of the spectral index. We find, at 95% C.L. that $0.95 < α_{\text{dec}} / α_0 < 1.02$. Setting $dn_S /dlnk=0$, yields $0.94< α_{\text{dec}} / α_0 < 1.01$ as previously reported. We find that a lower value of $α/ α_0$ makes a value of $d n_S /dlnk = 0$ more compatib…
We describe constraints on a ``standard'' 8 parameter open cold dark matter (CDM) model from the most recent CMB and SN1a data. Our parameters are the densities of CDM, baryons, vacuum energy and curvature, the reionization optical depth, and the normalization and tilt for both scalar and tensor fluctuations. We find that although the possibility of reionization and gravity waves substantially weakens the constraints on CDM and baryon density, tilt, Hubble constant and curvature, allowing e.g. a closed Universe, open models with vanishing cosmological constant are still strongly disfavored.
We present an analytic model, based on previous works which tackled the reionization history of the universe, which allows us to describe the generation of the secondary CMB anisotropies due to the kinetic SZ effect. We take into account the "patchy pattern" of reionization (HII bubbles), the cross-correlations of these ionized regions, the small-scale fluctuations of the matter density field and the contribution from collapsed objects. For an open universe, we find that the power-spectrum $l(l+1)C_l/(2π)$ exhibits a plateau of height $10^{-13}$ in the range $10^3 < l < 10^6$. We find that for…
Secondary CMB anisotropies and polarization provide a laboratory to study structure formation in the reionized epoch. We consider the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect from mildly nonlinear large-scale structure and show that it is a natural extension of the perturbative Vishniac effect. If the gas traces the dark matter to overdensities of order 10, as expected from simulations, this effect is at least comparable to the Vishniac effect at arcminute scales. On smaller scales, it may be used to study the thermal history-dependent clustering of the gas. Polarization is generated through Thomson …
We study the signal in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization anisotropy resulting from patchy reionization. It is well known that the primordial polarization of the CMB is very sensitive to the details of reionization. Combining a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, in which the optical depth to the reionization epoch is in the range 0.014 to 0.048, with a high resolution N-body simulation we find that reionization generates a peak with amplitude 0.05~0.15 μK at large angular scales. The position of this peak reveals the size of the horizon at reionization, whilst its amplitu…
Hydrogen atoms in the Universe that initially formed at redshift z = 1100 were reionized at 5 < z < 60. It is likely that this transition proceeded through a mixed phase of partial ionization. We develop an analytic approach to calculating the effect on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) of Thomson scattering off this inhomogeneous distribution of free electrons. We study two models of the reionization process, one of which associates ionized patches with overdense regions of the smoothed density field. We find the generated anisotropy to have a power spectrum which peaks at angular scales …
The origin of CMB polarization is reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the cosmological information encoded in it: the nature of primordial fluctuations, the connection with the inflation paradigm. Insights into more recent epochs are also discussed: early reionization and high redshift matter distribution from CMB lensing.
Measurements of the CMB temperature anisotropy and the temperature-polarization cross correlation by WMAP suggest a reionization redshift of $z \sim 17 \pm 5$. On the other hand, observations of high redshift galaxies indicate a presence of a significant fraction of neutral hydrogen at redshift $z\sim 6-7$. We show that cosmic strings with tensions well within, but not far from, current observation bounds could cause early star formation at a level sufficient to explain the high reionization redshift.
The recent observations of cross temperature-polarization power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) made by the WMAP satellite are in better agreement with a high value of the Thomson scattering optical depth τ\approx 0.17. This value is close to τ= 0.3, which is taken as the upper limit in the parameter extraction analysis made by the WMAP team. However, models with τ\sim 0.3 provide a good fit to current CMB data and are not significantly excluded when combined with Large Scale Structure data. By making use of a self-consistent reionization model, we verify the astrophysical fea…
Constraints on cosmological parameters from upcoming measurements with the Mileura Widefield Array-Low Frequency Demonstrator (MWA-LFD) of the redshifted 21 cm power spectrum are forecast assuming a flat LCDM cosmology and that the reionization of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium occurs below a redshift of z=8. We find that observations with the MWA-LFD cannot constrain the underlying cosmology in this scenario. In principle, a similar experiment with a 10-fold increase in collecting area could provide useful constraints on the slope of the inflationary power spectrum, n_s, and the…
We reexamine the temperature-polarization correlation function of the cosmic microwave background induced by tensor mode with a scale-invariant spectrum in reionized standard cold dark matter models. It is found that the sign of the correlation function is positive on all angular scales even in a model with substantial reionization.
