I calculate a hybrid cross-power spectrum estimator from the WMAP 5-year CMB temperature maps, discuss the goodness of fit, and then constrain cosmological parameters. The spectrum and results are generally consistent with previous results, though the power spectrum error bars are slightly smaller and there are small shifts at high ell. The small improvement in error bars is obtained at very low numerical cost but does not significantly improve parameter constraints. I discuss the accuracy of the likelihood model and how constraints on the optical depth translate into constraints on the reionization history allowing for helium reionization. In the appendices I propose a simple reionization parameterization that determines the history in terms of a mid-point reionization redshift, and suggest a new likelihood approximation for chi-squared-like distributions with varying skewness.
In this paper, we study how to predict the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background using knowledge of only the temperature (intensity) and the cross-correlation between temperature and polarization. We derive a ``Wiener prediction'' method and apply it to the WMAP all-sky CMB temperature maps and to the MAXIMA field.
I discuss whether the standard cosmological models fit the WMAP data well enough to justify parameter estimation with standard assumptions. The observed quadrupole is low (but has significant foreground uncertainty) and drives weak evidence for theoretical models predicting low values, such as models with a running spectral index. Other more seriously outlying points of the WMAP power spectrum appear not to fit the expectations of simple Gaussian models very well. The effective temperature chi-squared is however acceptable on large scales. There also appears to be evidence for an anisotropic d…
We use multi-frequency information in first year WMAP data to search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. WMAP has sufficiently broad frequency coverage to constrain SZ without the addition of higher frequency data: the SZ power spectrum amplitude is expected to increase 50% from W to Q frequency band. This, in combination with the low noise in WMAP, allows us to strongly constrain the SZ contribution. We derive an optimal frequency combination of WMAP cross-spectra to extract SZ in the presence of noise, CMB, and radio point sources, which are marginalized over. We find that the SZ contribu…
We combine N-body simulations of structure growth with physical modelling of galaxy evolution to investigate whether the shift in cosmological parameters between the 1-year and 3-year results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe affects predictions for the galaxy population. Structure formation is significantly delayed in the WMAP3 cosmology, because the initial matter fluctuation amplitude is lower on the relevant scales. The decrease in dark matter clustering strength is, however, almost entirely offset by an increase in halo bias, so predictions for galaxy clustering are barely alt…
WMAP has provided CMB maps of the full sky. The raw data is subject to foreground contamination, in particular near to the Galactic plane. Foreground cleaned maps have been derived, e.g., the internal linear combination (ILC) map of Bennett et al. and the reduced foreground TOH map of Tegmark et al. Using S statistics we examine whether residual foreground contamination is left over in the foreground cleaned maps. In particular, we specify which parts of the foreground cleaned maps are sufficiently accurate for the circle-in-the-sky signature. We generalise the S statistic, called D statistic,…
We investigate the effects of changes in the cosmological parameters between the WMAP 1st, 3rd, and 5th year results on the structure of dark matter haloes. We use a set of simulations that cover 5 decades in halo mass ranging from the scales of dwarf galaxies (V_c ~30 km/s) to clusters of galaxies (V_c ~ 1000 km/s). We find that the concentration mass relation is a power law in all three cosmologies. However the slope is shallower and the zero point is lower moving from WMAP1 to WMAP5 to WMAP3. For haloes of mass log(M_200/Msun) = 10, 12, and 14 the differences in the concentration parameter …
We present the results of an extragalactic point source search using the five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz (Q-, V- and W-band) temperature maps. This work is an extension of our point source search in the WMAP maps applying a CMB-free technique. An internal linear combination (ILC) map has been formed from the three-band maps, with the weights chosen to remove the CMB anisotropy signal as well as to favor a selection of flat-spectrum sources. We find 381 sources at the > 5 sigma level outside the WMAP point source detection mask in the ILC map, among which 89 are "new" (i.e., not present in the…
A primordial cosmological magnetic field induces and supports vorticity or Alfven waves, which in turn generate cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. A homogeneous primordial magnetic field with fixed direction induces correlations between the $a_{l-1,m}$ and $a_{l+1,m}$ multipole coefficients of the CMB temperature anisotropy field. We discuss the constraints that can be placed on the strength of such a primordial magnetic field using CMB anisotropy data from the WMAP experiment. We place 3 $σ$ upper limits on the strength of the magnetic field of $B < 15$ nG for vector perturbation…
We explore methods of fitting templates to cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, and in particular demonstrate the application of the total convolver algorithm as a fast method of performing a search over all possible locations and orientations of the template relative to the sky. This analysis includes investigation of issues such as chance alignments and foreground residuals. We apply these methods to compare Bianchi models of type VII_h to WMAP first year data and confirm the basic result of our 2005 paper.
Recently a symmetry-based method to test for statistical isotropy of the cosmic microwave background was developed. We apply the method to template-cleaned 3-year and 5-year WMAP-$DA$ maps. We examine a wide range of angular multipoles from $2 < l < 300$. The analysis detects statistically signicant signals of anisotropy inconsistent with an isotropic CMB in some of the foreground cleaned maps. We are unable to resolve whether the anomalies have a cosmological, local astrophysical or instrumental origin. Assuming the anisotropy arises due to residual foreground contamination, we estimate the r…
The recent study of BOOMERanG 150 GHz Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation maps have detected ellipticity of the temperature anisotropy spots independent on the temperature threshold. The effect has been found for spots up to several degrees in size, where the biases of the ellipticity estimator and of the noise are small. To check the effect, now we have studied, with the same algorithm and in the same sky region, the WMAP maps. We find ellipticity of the same average value also in WMAP maps, despite of the different sensitivity of the two experiments to low multipoles. Large spot elon…
We study the SZ-effect-induced non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation maps. If a CMB map is contaminated by the SZ effect of galaxies or galaxy clusters, the CMB maps should have similar non-Gaussian features as the galaxy and cluster fields. Using the WMAP data and 2MASS galaxy catalog we show that the non-Gaussianity of the 2MASS galaxies is imprinted on WMAP maps. The signature of non-Gaussianity can be seen with the 4^{th} order cross correlation between the wavelet variables of the WMAP maps and 2MASS clusters. The intensity of the 4^{th} order non-Gaussian f…
Using the values of the cosmological parameters obtained from Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the cosmological chemical clock observed by high-redshift quasars, it is shown that star formation should have started by the redshift $z_F > 9.5$, and that $z_F$ is sensitive only to $\omegamz h^2$ in flat $Λ$CDM cosmology.
We investigate the effect of foreground residuals in the WMAP data (Bennet et al. 2004) by adding foreground contamination to Gaussian ensembles of CMB signal and noise maps. We evaluate a set of non-Gaussian estimators on the contaminated ensembles to determine with what accuracy any residual in the data can be constrained using higher order statistics. We apply the estimators to the raw and cleaned Q, V, and W band first year maps. The foreground subtraction method applied to clean the data in Bennet et al. (2004a) appears to have induced a correlation between the power spectra and normalize…
We cross-correlate the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy maps from the WMAP, MAXIMA-I, and MAXIMA-II experiments. We use the cross-spectrum, which is the spherical harmonic transform of the angular two-point correlation function, to quantify the correlation as a function of angular scale. We find that the three possible pairs of cross-spectra are in close agreement with each other and with the power spectra of the individual maps. The probability that there is no correlation between the maps is smaller than 1 * 10^(-8). We also calculate power spectra for maps made of differen…
The WMAP first year detection of a high redshift reionization through its imprints on CMB anisotropy T and TE mode angular power spectra calls for a better comprehension of the universe ionization and thermal history after the standard recombination. Different reionization mechanisms predict different signatures in the CMB, both in temperature and polarization anisotropies and in spectral distortions. The Planck capability to distinguish among different scenarios through its sensitivity to T, TE, and E mode angular power spectra is discussed. Perspectives open by future high sensitivity experi…
We cross correlate the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first year data and the diffuse gamma-ray intensity maps from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) using spherical wavelet approaches. Correlations at 99.7% significance level have been detected, at scales around $15^{\circ}$ in the WMAP foreground cleaned W-band and Q-band maps, based on data from regions that are outside the most conservative WMAP foreground mask; no significant correlation is found with the Tegmark cleaned map. The detected correlation is most likely of Galactic origin, and thus can help us p…
This paper presents and discusses the application of blind source separation to astrophysical data obtained with the WMAP satellite. Blind separation permits to identify and isolate a component compatible with CMB emission, and to measure both its spatial power spectrum and its emission law. Both are found to be compatible with the present concordance cosmological model. This application demonstrates the usefulness of blind ICA for cosmological applications.
Using available optical and X-ray catalogues of clusters and superclusters of galaxies, we build templates of tSZ emission as they should be detected by the WMAP experiment. We compute the cross-correlation of our templates with WMAP temperature maps, and interpret our results separately for clusters and for superclusters of galaxies. For clusters of galaxies, we claim 2-5 $σ$ detections in our templates built from BCS Ebeling et al. (1998), NORAS (Boehringer et al. 2000) and de Grandi et al. (1999) catalogues. In these templates, the typical cluster temperature decrements in WMAP maps are aro…
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has provided us with the yet highest resolution all-sky maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background. As a result of thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, clusters of galaxies are imprinted as tiny, poorly resolved dips on top of primary CMB anisotropies in these maps. Here, I describe different efforts to extract the physics of Intracluster Medium (ICM) from the sea of primary CMB, through combining WMAP with low-redshift galaxy or X-ray cluster surveys. This finally culminates at a mean (universal) ICM pressure profile, which is for the first time directly…
We have analyzed the efficiency in source detection and flux density estimation of blind and non-blind detection techniques exploiting the MHW2 filter applied to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 5-year maps. A comparison with the AT20G Bright Source Sample (Massardi et al. 2008), with a completeness limit of 0.5 Jy and accurate flux measurements at 20 GHz, close to the lowest frequency of WMAP maps, has allowed us to assess the completeness and the reliability of the samples detected with the two approaches, as well as the accuracy of flux and error estimates, and their variatio…
In recent years the goal of estimating different cosmological parameters precisely has set new challenges in the effort to accurately measure the angular power spectrum of CMB. This has required removal of foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias with reliability and precision. Recently, a novel {\em model-independent} method for the estimation of CMB angular power spectrum solely from multi-frequency observations has been proposed and implemented on the first year WMAP data by Saha et al. 2006. All previous estimates of power spectrum of CMB are based upon foreground templates …
We use high-resolution $N$-body simulations to investigate the optical depth of giant arcs with length-to-width ratio larger than 7.5 and 10 in the `standard' $\LCDM$ model with $σ_8=0.9$ and $Ω_{\rm m,0}=0.3$ and a model based on three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. We find that, in dark-matter only simulations, the lensing probability in the three-year WMAP model (with $σ_8=0.74$ and $Ω_{\rm m,0}=0.238)$ decreases by a factor of $\sim 6$ compared with that in the `standard' $\LCDM$ model. The effects of baryonic cooling, star formation and feedbacks are uncertain, but…
Polarization is the next frontier of CMB analysis, but its signal is dominated over much of the sky by foregrounds which must be carefully removed. To determine the efficacy of this cleaning it is necessary to have sensitive tests for residual foreground contamination in polarization sky maps. The dominant Galactic foregrounds introduce a large-scale anisotropy on to the sky, so it makes sense to use a statistic sensitive to overall directionality for this purpose. Here we adapt the rapidly computable D statistic of Bunn and Scott to polarization data, and demonstrate its utility as a foregrou…
This talk, presented at the 5th Rencontres du Vietnam 2004, gives a review of the cosmological implications of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. The observational progress that has been made over the past decade is discussed and recent constraints on cosmological parameters are given. The concordance model is presented and the implications of the most recent data for cosmological inflation, reionisation and dark energy are described. Finally, the expectations for the next decade of CMB cosmology are summarised.
We compute the covariance expected between the spherical harmonic coefficients $a_{\ell m}$ of the cosmic microwave temperature anisotropy if the universe had a compact topology. For fundamental cell size smaller than the distance to the decoupling surface, off-diagonal components carry more information than the diagonal components (the power spectrum). We use a maximum likelihood analysis to compare the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe first-year data to models with a cubic topology. The data are compatible with finite flat topologies with fundamental domain $L > 1.2$ times the distance t…
WMAP precision data enables accurate testing of cosmological models. We find that the emerging standard model of cosmology, a flat Lambda-dominated universe seeded by nearly scale-invariant adiabatic Gaussian fluctuations, fits the WMAP data. With parameters fixed only by WMAP data, we can fit finer scale CMB measurements and measurements of large scle structure (galaxy surveys and the Lyman alpha forest). This simple model is also consistent with a host of other astronomical measurements. We then fit the model parameters to a combination of WMAP data with other finer scale CMB experiments (AC…
We apply the Gabor transform methodology proposed in (Hansen et al. 2002, 2003) to the WMAP data in order to test the statistical properties of the CMB fluctuation field and specifically to evaluate the fundamental assumption of cosmological isotropy. We estimate the angular power spectrum locally in discs of various sizes positioned in different directions. We determine whether the spatial position of a few outliers in the angular power spectrum could suggest the presence of residual foregrounds or systematic effects. For multipoles close to the first peak, the most deviant local estimates fr…
Recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), particularly when combined with other datasets, have revolutionised our knowledge of the values of the basic cosmological parameters. Here we summarize the state of play at the end of 2006, focusing on the combination of CMB measurements with the power spectrum of galaxy clustering. We compare the constraints derived from the extant CMB data circa 2005 and the final 2dFGRS galaxy power spectrum, with the results obtained when the WMAP 1-year data is replaced by the 3-year measurements (hereafter WMAP1 and WMAP3). Remarkabl…
We present circular and linear cross-correlation tests and the "friend-of-friend" analysis for phases of the Internal Linear Combination Map (ILC) and the WMAP foregrounds for all K--W frequency bands at the range of multipoles $\ell\le100$. We compare also Tegmark, de Oliveira-Costa and Hamilton (2003) and Naselsky et al. (2003) cleaned maps with corresponding foregrounds. We have found significant deviations from the expected Poissonian statistics for all the cleaned maps and foregrounds. Our analysis shows that, for a low multipole range of the cleaned maps, power spectra contains some of t…
The recently revised cosmological constraints from the Five-Year WMAP data ameliorate previous tension between cosmological constraints from the microwave background and from cluster abundances. We demonstrate that the revised estimates of cosmological parameters are in excellent agreement with the mass function of X-ray clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Velocity segregation between galaxies and the underlying dark matter could cause virial mass estimates to be biased, causing the mass scale of the mass function to be offset from the true value. Modest velocity segregation ($σ_{gxy}/σ_…
We present non-Gaussianity testing on recently-released derived maps from the first-year WMAP data by Tegmark, de Oliveria-Costa and Hamilton. Our test is based on a phase mapping technique which has the advantage of testing non-Gaussianity at separate multipole bands. We show that their foreground-cleaned map is against the random-phase hypothesis at all 4 multipole bands centered around l = 150, 290, 400 and 500. Their Wiener-filtered map, on the other hand, is Gaussian for l < 250, and marginally Gaussian for 224 < l < 350. However, we see the evidence of non-Gaussianity for l > 350 as we d…
The parameters of cosmological model with cold dark matter and cosmological constant (Lambda CDM) have been determined on a basis of three-year cosmic microwave background observations by space mission WMAP, as well as the data on the large-scale structure of the Universe. The data cover scales from 1 up to 10000 Mpc. The best-fit values of LambdaCDM model parameters were found by minimization of chi^2 using the Levenberg-Markquardt approach (Omega_Lambda=0.736+-0.065, Omega_m=0.238+-0.080, Omega_b=0.05+-0.011, h=0.68+- 0.09, sigma_8=0.73+-0.08 and n_s=0.96+-0.015). It is shown that the Lambda…
We cross-correlate WMAP and ROSAT diffuse X-ray background maps and look for common features in both data sets. We use the power spectrum of the product maps and the cross-power spectrum to highlight a possible correlation. The power spectrum of the product maps does not detect any correlation and the cross-power spectrum does not show any significant deviation from 0. We explore different explanations for this lack of correlation. A universe with a low value of Sigma_8 could naturally explain the lack of correlation. We also discuss the systematic effects which can affect this result, in part…
We present constraints on cosmological and star formation parameters based on combining observations of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and high-redshift quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use a semi-analytic model for reionization (Chiu and Ostriker 2000) that takes into account a number of important physical processes both within collapsing halos and in the intergalactic medium. Assuming that the efficiency of producing UV photons per baryon is constant, we derive a constraint of the form sigma_8 Omega_0^0.5~0.33 in a flat, Lambda-dominated universe with h=0…
We update our previous constraints on two-component hot dark matter (axions and neutrinos), including the recent WMAP 5-year data release. Marginalising over sum m_nu provides m_a < 1.02 eV (95% C.L.) for the axion mass. In the absence of axions we find sum m_nu < 0.63 eV (95% C.L.).
We report the results of an extragalactic point source search using the 61 and 94 GHz (V- and W-band) temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Applying a method that cancels the ``noise'' due to the CMB anisotropy signal, we find in the $|b| > 10\degr$ region 31 sources in the first-year maps and 64 sources in the three-year co-added maps, at a $5σ$ level. The 1$σ$ position uncertainties are 1.6' and 1.4' each. The increased detections and improved positional accuracy are expected from the higher signal-to-noise ratio of WMAP three-year data. All sources detected …
The WMAP satellite has made available high quality maps of the sky in five frequency bands ranging from 22 to 94 GHz, with the main scientific objective of studying the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). These maps, however, contain a mixture of emissions from various astrophysical origins, superimposed on CMB emission. The objective of the present work is to make a high resolution CMB map in which contamination by such galactic and extra-galactic foregrounds, as well as by instrumental noise, is as low as possible. The method used is an implementation of a constrained line…
We present an analysis of the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) describing the WMAP three-year temperature maps to place limits on possible levels of primordial non-Gaussianity. In particular, we apply perturbative formulae for the MFs to give constraints on the usual non-linear coupling constant fNL. The theoretical predictions are found to agree with the MFs of simulated CMB maps including the full effects of radiative transfer. The agreement is also very good even when the simulation maps include various observational artifacts, including the pixel window function, beam smearing, inhomogeneous no…
Several accurate analyses of the CMB temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have revealed a set of anomalous results, at large angular scales, that appears inconsistent with the statistical isotropy expected in the concordance cosmological model $Λ$CDM. Because these anomalies seem to indicate a preferred direction in the space, here we investigate the signatures that a primordial magnetic field, possibly present in the photon-baryon fluid during the decoupling era, could have produced in the large-angle modes of the observed CMB temperature fluctuations maps. To…
Several recent papers have made claims about the detection of an asymmetric distribution of large scale power in the cosmic microwave background anisotropy as measured by the WMAP satellite. In this paper, we investigate how the estimates of particular cosmological parameters vary when inferred from power spectra computed separately on the northern and southern hemispheres in three frames of reference. We focus our investigation on the three specific parameters to which the analysis is most sensitive, the spectral index n, the amplitude of fluctuations A and the optical depth tau. When using a…
We have derived whole-sky CMB polarization maps from the WMAP 5 year polarization data, using the Harmonic Internal Linear Combination (HILC) method. Our HILC method incorporates spatial variability of linear weights in a natural way and yields continuous linear weights over the entire sky. To estimate the power spectrum of HILC maps, we have derived a unbiased quadratic estimator, which is similar to the WMAP team's cross power estimator, but in a more convenient form for HILC maps. From our CMB polarization map, we have obtained TE correlation and E mode power spectra without applying any ma…
We search for the presence of cosmological neutrino background (CNB) anisotropies in recent WMAP 5-year data using their signature imprinted on modifications to cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum. By parametrizing the neutrino background anisotropies with the speed viscosity parameter $c_\vis$, we find that the WMAP 5-year data alone provide only a weak indication for CNB anisotropies with $c_\vis^2 > 0.06$ at the 95% confidence level. When we combine CMB anisotropy data with measurements of galaxy clustering, SN-Ia Hubble diagram, and other cosmological information, t…
The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) science team has released results from the first year of operation at the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrange point. The maps are consistent with previous observations but have much better sensitivity and angular resolution than the COBE DMR maps, and much better calibration accuracy and sky coverage than ground-based and balloon-borne experiments. The angular power spectra from these ground-based and balloon-borne experiments are consistent within their systematic and statistical uncertainties with the WMAP results. WMAP detected the large angular-scale corre…
The 3rd year WMAP results mark a shift in best fit values of cosmological parameters compared to the 1st year data and the concordance cosmological model. We test the consistency of the new results with previous constraints on cosmological parameters from the HIFLUGCS galaxy cluster sample and the impact of this shift on the X-ray luminosity-gravitational mass relation. The measured X-ray luminosity function combined with the observed luminosity-mass relation are compared to mass functions predicted for given cosmological parameter values. The luminosity function and luminosity-mass relation d…
We compare the predictions of hybrid inflationary models that produce both adiabatic fluctuations and topological defects to first year WMAP results. We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain the contribution of cosmic strings and textures to the CMB angular power spectrum. Marginalizing this contribution over the cosmological parameters of a power law flat LCDM model, we place a 95% upper limit of 23% on the topological defects contribution to density fluctuations, the maximum likelihood being of order 4%. This corresponds to an upper limit on the string scale of Gμ\leq 3.2 \times…
The statistical expectation values of the temperature fluctuations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) are assumed to be preserved under rotations of the sky. We investigate the statistical isotropy of the CMB anisotropy maps recently measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) using bipolar spherical harmonic power spectrum proposed in Hajian & Souradeep 2003. The Bipolar Power Spectrum (BiPS) is estimated for the full sky CMB anisotropy maps of the first year WMAP data. The method allows us to isolate regions in multipole space and study each region independently. This searc…
We show that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data of WMAP can give subelectronvolt limit on the neutrino mass: m_nu < 0.63 eV (95% CL). We also investigate its degeneracy with other cosmological parameters. In particular, we show the Hubble constant derived from the WMAP data decreases considerably when the neutrino mass is a few times 0.1 eV.
We describe a sampling method to estimate the polarized CMB signal from observed maps of the sky. We use a Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm to estimate the polarized CMB map, containing Q and U Stokes parameters at each pixel, and its covariance matrix. These can be used as inputs for cosmological analyses. The polarized sky signal is parameterized as the sum of three components: CMB, synchrotron emission, and thermal dust emission. The polarized Galactic components are modeled with spatially varying power law spectral indices for the synchrotron, and a fixed power law for the dust, and their…
We apply a previously developed Gibbs sampling framework to the foreground corrected 3-yr WMAP polarization data and compute the power spectrum and residual foreground template amplitude posterior distributions. We first analyze the co-added Q- and V-band data, and compare our results to the likelihood code published by the WMAP team. We find good agreement, and thus verify the numerics and data processing steps of both approaches. However, we also analyze the Q- and V-bands separately, allowing for non-zero EB cross-correlations and including two individual foreground template amplitudes trac…
We present the mass and X-ray temperature functions derived from a sample of more than 15,000 galaxy clusters of the MareNostrum Universe cosmological SPH simulations. In these simulations, we follow structure formation in a cubic volume of 500/h Mpc on a side assuming cosmological parameters consistent with either the first or third year WMAP data and gaussian initial conditions. We compare our numerical predictions with the most recent observational estimates of the cluster X-ray temperature functions and find that the low normalization cosmological model inferred from the 3 year WMAP data r…
We present constraints on the cosmological and reionization parameters based on the cumulative mass function of the Ly-alpha systems. We find that the analysis of the cumulative mass function of the Ly-alpha systems indicates a reionization redshift z_r=24.2\+-4 (68%CL) in agreement with the value found on the basis of the WMAP anisotropy measurements, setting constraints on the amplitude of the density contrast, sigma_8=0.91+-0.04 (68\CL), similar to those derived from the X-ray cluster temperature function. Our joint analysis of Ly-alpha cumulative mass function and WMAP anisotropy measureme…
We cross-correlate the third-year WMAP data with galaxy samples extracted from the SDSS DR5 (SDSS5) covering 16% of the sky. These measurements confirm a positive cross-correlation, which is well fitted by the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect for flat LCDM models with a cosmological constant.
I discuss the extraction of cosmological parameter constraints from the recent WMAP 3-year data, both on its own and in combination with other data. The large degeneracies in the first year data can be largely broken with the third year data, giving much better parameter constraints from WMAP alone. The polarization constraint on the optical depth is crucial to obtain the main results, including n_s < 1 in basic six-parameter models. Almost identical constraints can also be obtained using only temperature data with a prior on the optical depth. I discuss the modelling of secondaries when extra…
Motivated by the large-scale asymmetry observed in the cosmic microwave background sky, we consider a specific class of anisotropic cosmological models -- Bianchi type VII_h -- and compare them to the WMAP first-year data on large angular scales. Remarkably, we find evidence of a correlation which is ruled out as a chance alignment at the 3sigma level. The best fit Bianchi model corresponds to x=0.55, Omega_0=0.5, a rotation axis in the direction (l,b)=(222degr,-62degr), shear (sigma/H)_0=2.4e-10 and a right--handed vorticity (omega/H)_0=6.1e-10. Correcting for this component greatly reduces t…
Sky temperature map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is one of the premier probes of cosmology. To minimize instrumentally induced systematic errors, CMB anisotropy experiments measure temperature differences across the sky using paires of horn antennas with a fixed separation angle, temperature maps are recovered from temperature differences obtained in sky survey through a map-making procedure. The instrument noise, inhomogeneities of the sky coverage and sky temperature inevitably produce statistical and systematical errors in recovered temperature maps. We show in this paper that o…
We continue investigation of the hidden plane-mirror symmetry in the distribution of excursion sets in cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps, previously noticed in the three-year data of the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP), using the WMAP 5 years maps. The symmetry is shown to have higher significance, χ^2 < 1.7, for low multipoles \ell < 5, while disappearing at larger multipoles, χ^2 > 3.5 for \ell > 10. The study of the sum and difference maps of temperature inhomogeneity regions, along with simulated maps, confirms its existence. The properties of these m…
The COBE-DMR 4-year maps displayed a strong non-Gaussian signal in the ``inter-scale'' components of the bispectrum: their observed values did not display the scatter expected from Gaussian maps. We re-examine this and other suggested non-Gaussian features in the light of WMAP. We find that they all disappear. Given that it was proved that COBE-DMR high noise levels and documented systematics could at most {\it dilute} the observed non-Gaussian features, we conclude that this dataset must have contained non-negligible undocumented systematic errors. It turns out that the culprit is a combinati…
ABRIDGED: We introduce and analyze a method for testing statistical isotropy and Gaussianity and apply it to the WMAP CMB foreground reduced, temperature maps, and cross-channel difference maps. We divide the sky into regions of varying size and shape and measure the first four moments of the one-point distribution within these regions, and using their simulated spatial distributions we test the statistical isotropy and Gaussianity hypotheses. By randomly varying orientations of these regions, we sample the underlying CMB field in a new manner, that offers a richer exploration of the data cont…
