We update our previous constraints on two-component hot dark matter (axions and neutrinos), including the recent WMAP 5-year data release. Marginalising over sum m_nu provides m_a < 1.02 eV (95% C.L.) for the axion mass. In the absence of axions we find sum m_nu < 0.63 eV (95% C.L.).

We use observations of the cosmological large-scale structure to derive limits on two-component hot dark matter consisting of mass-degenerate neutrinos and hadronic axions, both components having velocity dispersions corresponding to their respective decoupling temperatures. We use the cosmic microwave background angular power spectra to place upper limits on the degree to which global defects may have aided cosmic structure formation. We explore this under the inflationary paradigm, but with the addition of textures resulting from the breaking of a global O(4) symmetry during the early stages of the Universe. We study the effect of the late decaying saxino (the scalar superpartner of the axion) and find out that there is a possible dark matter solution from a class of supersymmetric extensions of the invisible axion model. In this class of models, the saxino which decays into two axions acts as the late decaying particle which reconciles the cold dark matter model with high values of the Hubble constant. We present models of decaying particles for increasing the effective number of neutrinos N_nu after big bang nucleosynthesis but before the structure formation begins. Inflation in a five-dimensional brane world model with two boundary branes is studied. We make use of the moduli space approximation whereby the low energy theory reduces to a four-dimensional biscalar-tensor gravity plus a minimally coupled scalar field. The axino is the fermionic superpartner of the axion. Assuming the axino is the lightest supersymmetric particle and stable due to R-parity conservation, we compute the relic axino density from thermal reactions in the early Universe. From the comparison with the WMAP results, we find that thermally produced axinos could provide the dominant part of cold dark matter, for example, for an axino mass of 100 keV and a reheating temperature of 10^6 GeV.
