We search for the presence of cosmological neutrino background (CNB) anisotropies in recent WMAP 5-year data using their signature imprinted on modifications to cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum. By parametrizing the neutrino background anisotropies with the speed viscosity parameter $c_\vis$, we find that the WMAP 5-year data alone provide only a weak indication for CNB anisotropies with $c_\vis^2 > 0.06$ at the 95% confidence level. When we combine CMB anisotropy data with measurements of galaxy clustering, SN-Ia Hubble diagram, and other cosmological information, the detection increases to $c_\vis^2 > 0.16$ at the same 95% confidence level. Future data from Planck, combined with a weak lensing survey such as the one expected with DUNE from space, will be able to measure the CNB anisotropy parameter at about 10% accuracy. We discuss the degeneracy between neutrino background ansiotropies and other cosmological para meters such as the number of effective neutrinos species and the dark energy equation of state.
We demonstrate that combining Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy measurements from the 1st year WMAP observations with clustering data from the SLOAN galaxy redshift survey yields an indication for primordial anisotropies in the cosmological Neutrino Background.
We present an analysis of the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) describing the WMAP three-year temperature maps to place limits on possible levels of primordial non-Gaussianity. In particular, we apply perturbative formulae for the MFs to give constraints on the usual non-linear coupling constant fNL. The theoretical predictions are found to agree with the MFs of simulated CMB maps including the full effects of radiative transfer. The agreement is also very good even when the simulation maps include various observational artifacts, including the pixel window function, beam smearing, inhomogeneous no…
We present a study of the 3-pt angular correlation function w_3= <delta_1 delta_2 delta_3> of (adimensional) temperature anisotropies measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Results can be normalized to the 2-point function w_2 = <delta_1 delta_2> in terms of the hierarchical: q_3 ~ w_3/w_2^2 or dimensionless: d_3 ~ w_2/w_2^{3/2}$ amplitudes. Strongly non-Gaussian models are generically expected to show d_3 > 1 or q_3 > 10^3 d_3. Unfortunately, this is comparable to the cosmic variance on large angular scales. For Gaussian primordial models, q_3 gives a direct measure of t…
We test the hypothesis that the temperature of the cosmic microwave background is consistent with a Gaussian random field defined on the celestial sphere, using de-biased internal linear combination (DILC) map produced from the 3-year WMAP data. We test the phases for spherical harmonic modes with l <= 10 (which should be the cleanest) for their uniformity, randomness, and correlation with those of the foreground templates. The phases themselves are consistent with a uniform distribution, but not for l <= 5, and the differences between phases are not consistent with uniformity. For l=3 and l=6…
We perform a blind multi-component analysis of the WMAP 1 year foreground cleaned maps using SMICA (Spectral Matching Independent Component Analysis). We provide a new estimate of the CMB power spectrum as well as the amplitude of the CMB anisotropies across frequency channels. We show that the CMB anisotropies are compatible with temperature fluctuations as expected from the standard paradigm. The analysis also allows us to identify and separate a weak residual galactic emission present significantly in the Q-band outside of the Kp2 mask limits, and mainly concentrated at low galactic latitud…
We have independently measured the genus topology of the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background seen by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). A genus analysis of the WMAP data indicates consistency with Gaussian random-phase initial conditions, as predicted by standard inflation.
We apply spherical needlets to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year cosmic microwave background (CMB) dataset, to search for imprints of non-isotropic features in the CMB sky. We use the needlets localization properties to resolve peculiar features in the CMB sky and to study how these features contribute to the anisotropy power spectrum of the CMB. In addition to the now well-known "cold spot" of the CMB map in the southern hemisphere, we also find two hot spots at greater than 99% confidence level, again in the southern hemisphere and closer to the Galactic plane. While the cold s…
We examine statistical isotropy of large scale anisotropies of the Internal Linear Combination (ILC) map, based on three year WMAP data. Our study reveals no significant deviation from statistical isotropy on large angular scales of 3-year ILC map. Comparing statistical isotropy of 3-year ILC map and 1-year ILC map, we find a significant improvement in 3-year ILC map which can be due to the gain model, improved ILC map processing and foreground minimization.
We have independently measured the genus topology of the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background seen in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 3-year data. A genus analysis of the WMAP data indicates consistency with Gaussian random-phase initial conditions, as predicted by standard inflation. We set 95% confidence limits on non-linearities of -101 < f_{nl} < 107. We also find that the observed low l (l <= 8) modes show a slight anti-correlation with the Galactic foreground, but not exceeding 95% confidence, and that the topology defined by these modes is consiste…
We study the effect of primordial isocurvature perturbations on non-Gaussian properties of CMB temperature anisotropies. We consider generic forms of the non-linearity of isocurvature perturbations which can be applied to a wide range of theoretical models. We derive analytical expressions for the bispectrum and the Minkowski Functionals for CMB temperature fluctuations to describe the non-Gaussianity from isocurvature perturbations. We find that the isocurvature non-Gaussianity in the quadratic isocurvature model, where the isocurvature perturbation S is written as a quadratic function of the…
The physics of the origin and evolution of CMB anisotropies is described. I explain the idea and status of cosmic parameter estimation and follow it up with critical comments on its dependence on model assumptions and initial conditions.
I present a briefly summary of the current status of inflationary models versus topological defects scenarios, as the mechanisms which could have induced the initial density perturbations, which left an imprint on the cosmic microwave backgound radiation anisotropies.
Recent analyses of the WMAP data seem to indicate the possible presence of large-angle anisotropy in the Universe. If confirmed, these can have important consequences for our understanding of the Universe. A number of attempts have recently been made to establish the reality and nature of such anisotropies in the CMB data. Among these is a directional indicator recently proposed by the authors. A distinctive feature of this indicator is that it can be used to generate a sky map of the large-scale anisotropies of the CMB maps. Applying this indicator to full-sky temperature maps we found a stat…
We study the complex visibilities of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies that are observables in interferometric observations of the cosmic microwave background, using the multipole expansion methods commonly adopted in analyzing single-dish experiments. This allows us to recover the properties of the visibilities that is obscured in the flat-sky approximation. Discussions of the window function, multipole resolution, instrumental noise, pixelization, and polarization are given.
We reconstruct the primordial spectrum of the curvature perturbation, $P(k)$, from the observational data of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) by the cosmic inversion method developed recently. In contrast to conventional parameter-fitting methods, our method can potentially reproduce small features in $P(k)$ with good accuracy. As a result, we obtain a complicated oscillatory $P(k)$. We confirm that this reconstructed $P(k)$ recovers the WMAP angular power spectrum with resolution up to $Δ\ell \simeq 5$. Similar oscillatory features are found, however, in simulations using artif…
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has provided us with the yet highest resolution all-sky maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background. As a result of thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, clusters of galaxies are imprinted as tiny, poorly resolved dips on top of primary CMB anisotropies in these maps. Here, I describe different efforts to extract the physics of Intracluster Medium (ICM) from the sea of primary CMB, through combining WMAP with low-redshift galaxy or X-ray cluster surveys. This finally culminates at a mean (universal) ICM pressure profile, which is for the first time directly…
Deviations from isotropy have been a key tool to identify the sources and the primary type of cosmic rays (CRs) at low energies. We argue that anisotropies due to blind regions induced by the Galactic magnetic field, the cosmological Compton-Getting effect, medium-scale anisotropies reflecting the large-scale distribution of CR sources and the small-scale clustering of the CR arrival directions at the highest energies may play the same role for extragalactic CRs.
We present the constraints on inflationary parameters in a flat $Λ$CDM universe obtained by WMAP three year data release, plus smaller scale CMB and two LSS data sets, 2dF and SDSS (treated separately). We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique combined with an analytic description of the inflationary spectra in terms of the horizon flow functions (HFF). By imposing a consistency condition for the tensor-to-scalar ratio, we study the constraints both on single field standard inflation and on inflation with the violation of the null energy condition, which leads to a blue spectrum for …
The faint radio point sources that are unresolved in cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy maps are likely to be a biased tracer of the large-scale structure dark matter distribution. While the shot-noise contribution to the angular power spectrum of unresolved radio point sources is included either when optimally constructing the CMB angular power spectrum, as with WMAP data, or when extracting cosmological parameters, we suggest that clustering part of the point source power spectrum should also be included. This is especially necessary at high frequencies above 150 GHz, where the clu…
In this addendum to Phys.Rev. D74 (2006) 023502, we present an update of cosmological constraints on single-field inflation in light of the Wilkinson Microwave Ansiotropy Probe satellite mission five-year results (WMAP5). We find that the cosmic microwave background data are quite consistent with a Harrison-Zel'dovich primordial spectrum with no running and zero tensor amplitude. We find that the three main conclusions of our analysis of the WMAP three-year data (WMAP3) are consistent with the WMAP5 data: (1) the Harrison--Zel'dovich model is within the 95% confidence level contours; (2) there…
We have searched the 1st-year WMAP W-Band CMB anisotropy map for evidence of cosmic strings. We have set a limit of $δ= 8 πG μ/ c^2 < 8.2 \times 10^{-6}$ at 95% CL for statistical search for a significant number of strings in the map. We also have set a limit using the uniform distribution of strings model in the WMAP data with $δ= 8 πG μ/ c^2 < 7.34 \times 10^{-5}$ at 95% CL. And the pattern search technique we developed here set a limit $δ= 8 πG μ/ c^2 < 1.54 \times 10^{-5}$ at 95% CL.
We give a brief review of the physics of acoustic oscillations in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. As an example of the impact of their detection in cosmology, we show how the present data on CMB angular power spectrum on sub-degree scales can be used to constrain dark energy cosmological models.
If the gas in filaments and halos shares the same velocity field than the luminous matter, it will generate measurable temperature anisotropies due to the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We compute the distribution function of the KSZ signal produced by a typical filament and show it is highly non-gaussian. The combined contribution of the Thermal and Kinematic SZ effects of a filament of size $L\simeq 5$Mpc and electron density $n_e\simeq 10^3m^{-3}$ could explain the cold spots of $δ\sim -200μ$K on scales of 30' found in the Corona Borealis Supercluster by the VSA experiment. PLANCK, wit…
We present Archeops, a balloon-borne bolometer experiment designed to map a large part of the sky at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The main scientific goal is to study the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies on all scales, in order to properly derive the cosmological parameters of the Universe. We present the sky coverage map of the first scientific flight.
A numerical likelihood approach to the determination of cosmic ray anisotropies is presented which offers many advantages over other approaches. It allows a wide range of statistically meaningful hypotheses to be compared even when full sky coverage is unavailable, can be readily extended in order to include measurement errors, and makes maximum unbiased use of all available information.
The present status of anisotropy studies for the highest energy cosmic rays is presented including the first full sky survey. Directions and prospects for the future are also discussed in light of new statistical methods and the last quantities of data expected in the near future from the Pierre Auger Observatory.
Most of the cosmological information extracted from the CMB has been obtained through the power spectrum, however there is much more to be learnt from the statistical distribution of the temperature random field. We review some recent developments in the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies and present a description of the novel tools developed to analyse the properties of the CMB anisotropies beyond the power spectrum.
The effects of reionization, occurring after standard recombination in cold dark matter-dominated models, on CMB anisotropies are investigated. Late-time reionization reduces the CMB anisotropies, in particular, on degree scales. It is found that constraints on cold dark matter-dominated models from the highest frequency channel of the 9-point South Pole data are significantly relaxed for models which are consistent with Big Bang nucleosynthesis if reionization is assumed to have occurred by redshift $\sim 20.$
Large-scale modes in the temperature anisotropy power spectrum C_l measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), seem to have lower amplitudes (C_2, C_3 and C_4) than that expected in the so called concordance LCDM model. In particular, the quadrupole C_2 is reported to have a smaller value than allowed by cosmic variance. This has been interpreted as a possible indication of new physics. In this paper we re-analyse the WMAP data using the 2-point angular correlation and its higher-order moments. This method, which requires a full covariance analysis, is more direct and provides…
A primordial cosmological magnetic field induces and supports vorticity or Alfven waves, which in turn generate cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. A homogeneous primordial magnetic field with fixed direction induces correlations between the $a_{l-1,m}$ and $a_{l+1,m}$ multipole coefficients of the CMB temperature anisotropy field. We discuss the constraints that can be placed on the strength of such a primordial magnetic field using CMB anisotropy data from the WMAP experiment. We place 3 $σ$ upper limits on the strength of the magnetic field of $B < 15$ nG for vector perturbation…

The WMAP first year detection of a high redshift reionization through its imprints on CMB anisotropy T and TE mode angular power spectra calls for a better comprehension of the universe ionization and thermal history after the standard recombination. Different reionization mechanisms predict different signatures in the CMB, both in temperature and polarization anisotropies and in spectral distortions. The Planck capability to distinguish among different scenarios through its sensitivity to T, TE, and E mode angular power spectra is discussed. Perspectives open by future high sensitivity experi…
During the last years it has become clear that global O(N) defects and U(1) cosmic strings do not lead to the pronounced first acoustic peak in the power spectrum of anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background which has recently been observed to high accuracy. Inflationary models cannot easily accommodate the low second peak indicated by the data. Here we construct causal scaling seed models which reproduce the first and second peak. Future, more precise CMB anisotropy and polarization experiments will however be able to distinguish them from the ordinary adiabatic models.
This paper presents a complete analysis of the effects of second order gravitational perturbations on Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, taking explicitly into account scalar, vector and tensor modes. We also consider the second order perturbations of the metric itself obtaining them, for a universe dominated by a collision-less fluid, in the Poisson gauge, by transforming the known results in the synchronous gauge. We discuss the resulting second order anisotropies in the Poisson gauge, and analyse the possible relevance of the different terms. We expect that, in the simplest scenarios…
We cross-correlate the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy maps from the WMAP, MAXIMA-I, and MAXIMA-II experiments. We use the cross-spectrum, which is the spherical harmonic transform of the angular two-point correlation function, to quantify the correlation as a function of angular scale. We find that the three possible pairs of cross-spectra are in close agreement with each other and with the power spectra of the individual maps. The probability that there is no correlation between the maps is smaller than 1 * 10^(-8). We also calculate power spectra for maps made of differen…
Phase transitions taking place during the inflationary epoch give rise to bubbles of true vacuum embedded in the false vacuum. These bubbles can imprint a distinctive signal on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We evaluate the feasibility of detecting these signatures with waveletsin CMB maps, such as those that will be made available by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Planck mission.
We present a formalism for analyzing interferometric observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy and polarization data. The formalism is based upon the ell-space expansion of the angular power spectrum favoured in recent years. Explicit discussions of maximum likelihood analysis, power spectrum reconstruction, parameter estimation, imaging and polarization are given. As an example, several calculations for the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI) and Cosmic Background Interferometer (CBI) experiments are presented.
We discuss the photoionization of the intergalactic medium by early formed quasars and propose a mechanism which could generate measurable temperature fluctuations $δ_{T }~=~ΔT/T$ of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Early quasars produce individual ionized regions around themselves. We evaluate both thermal and kinetic (first-order Doppler) Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effects associated with those ionized regions.
A principal component analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements is used to investigate degeneracies among cosmological parameters. The results show that a degeneracy with tensor modes -- the `tensor degeneracy' -- dominates uncertainties in estimates of the baryon and cold dark matter densities, omega_b = Omega_b h2, omega_c = Ω_c h^2, from an analysis of CMB anisotropies alone. The principal component analysis agrees well with a maximum likelihood analysis of the observations, identifying the main degeneracy directions and providing an impression of the effective d…
Current experiments collecting high statistics in ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are opening a new window on the universe facing the possibility to perform UHECR astronomy. Here we discuss a large scale structure (LSS) model for the UHECR origin for which we evaluate the expected large scale anisotropy in the UHECR arrival distribution. Employing the IRAS PSCz catalogue as tracer of the LSS, we derive the minimum statistics needed to reject or assess the correlation of the UHECRs with the baryonic distribution in the universe, in particular providing a forecast for the Auger experiment…
The quadrupole power of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies seen in the WMAP data is puzzlingly low. In this paper we demonstrate that Minimum Variance Optimization (MVO), a technique used by many authors (including the WMAP science team) to separate the CMB from contaminating foregrounds, has the effect of forcing the extracted CMB map to have zero statistical correlation with the foreground emission. Over an ensemble of universes the true CMB and foreground are indeed expected to be uncorrelated, but any particular sky pattern (such as the one we happen to observe) wil…
The linear anisotropies in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation and its polarization provide a clean picture of fluctuations in the universe some 370 kyr after the big bang. Simple physics connects these fluctuations with those present in the ultra-high-energy universe, and this makes the CMB anisotropies a powerful tool for constraining the fundamental physics that was responsible for the generation of structure. Late-time effects also leave their mark, making the CMB temperature and polarization useful probes of dark energy and the astrophysics of reionization. …
Data taken with the HEGRA Scintillator Array have been used to search for spatial anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above 20 TeV. In this paper results on the search for TeV gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane and the Gould belt are presented. Furthermore, a search for TeV gamma-ray emission correlated with the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies well beyond the Greizen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff has been performed. Such a correlation can be expected from sufficiently high energetic nuclei inducing electromagnetic cascades on the diffuse intergalactic backgro…
Anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) contain a wealth of information about the past history of the universe and the present values of cosmological parameters. I ouline some of the theoretical advances of the last few years. In particular, I emphasize that for a wide class of cosmological models, theorists can accurately calculate the spectrum to better than a percent. The specturm of anisotropies today is directly related to the pattern of inhomogeneities present at the time of recombination. This recognition leads to a powerful argument that will enable us to distinguish infl…
Recent work has emphasised the importance of vector and tensor contributions to the large scale microwave anisotropy fluctuations produced by cosmic defects. In this paper we provide a general discussion of these contributions, and how their magnitude is constrained by the fundamental assumptions of causality, scaling, and statistical isotropy. We discuss an analytic model which illustrates and explains how the ratios of isotropic and anisotropic scalar, vector and tensor microwave anisotropies are determined. This provides a check of the results from large scale numerical simulations, confirm…
The y axis of figure 9, which gives the power amplitude ($l(l+1)C_l$) in units of $10^{-12}$, is incorrectly reported. The correct values are obtained by dividing the amplitudes by 16. All the relative values remain valid, and this therefore does not change the conclusions of the paper.
Abbreviated: We highlight the remarkable evolution in the CMB power spectrum over the past few years, and in the cosmological parameters for minimal inflation models derived from it. Grand unified spectra (GUS) show pre-WMAP optimal bandpowers are in good agreement with each other and with the one-year WMAP results, which now dominate the L < 600 bands. GUS are used to determine calibrations, peak/dip locations and heights, and damping parameters. These CMB experiments significantly increased the case for accelerated expansion in the early universe (the inflationary paradigm) and at the curren…
We investigate the cosmic variance of the skewness of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in an inflationary model which leads to the baryon isocurvature scenario for the cosmic structure formation. In this model, the baryon number fluctuations are given by a sinusoidal function of a random Gaussian field. We find that the skewness is very small in comparison with that of the fluctuations which obey Gaussian statistics.
We compute cosmic microwave background angular power spectra for scaling seed models of structure formation. A generic parameterization of the energy momentum tensor of the seeds is employed. We concentrate on two regions of parameter space inspired by global topological defects: O(4) texture models and the large-N limit of O(N) models. We use $χ^{2}$ fitting to compare these models to recent flat-band power measurements of the cosmic microwave background. Only scalar perturbations are considered.
We study the impact of a stochastic background of primordial magnetic fields on the scalar contribution of CMB anisotropies and on the matter power spectrum. We give the correct initial conditions for cosmological perturbations and the exact expressions for the energy density and Lorentz force associated to the stochastic background of primordial magnetic fields, given a power-law for their spectra cut at a damping scale. The dependence of the CMB temperature and polarization spectra on the relevant parameters of the primordial magnetic fields is illustrated.
If current ideas about unified field theories are correct, macroscopic cosmic defects may well exist. The observation of such an entity would have enormous significance for our understanding of fundamental physics. This paper points out a novel observable signature of cosmic texture and global monopoles, namely strong hot spots in the cosmic microwave anisotropy pattern on subdegree scales. This signal should be readily detectable by the next generation of anisotropy mapping experiments. The signature arises from overdensities in the photon-baryon fluid generated by the gravitational attractio…
We report the detection of correlated anisotropies in the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background at 160 microns. We measure the power spectrum in the Spitzer/SWIRE Lockman Hole field. It reveals unambiguously a strong excess above cirrus and Poisson contributions, at spatial scales between 5 and 30 arcminutes, interpreted as the signature of infrared galaxy clustering. Using our model of infrared galaxy evolution we derive a linear bias b=1.74 \pm 0.16. It is a factor 2 higher than the bias measured for the local IRAS galaxies. Our model indicates that galaxies dominating the 160 microns correlated an…
We discuss the hypotheses that cosmological baryon asymmetry and entropy were produced in the early Universe by phase transition of the scalar fields in the framework of spontaneous baryogenesis scenario. We show that annihilation of the matter-antimatter clouds during the cosmological hydrogen recombination could distort of the CMB anisotropies and polarization by delay of the recombination. After recombination the annihilation of the antibaryonic clouds (ABC) and baryonic matter can produce peak-like reionization at the high redshifts before formation of quasars and early galaxy formation. W…
Over the last decade, cosmological observations have attained a level of precision which allows for very detailed comparison with theoretical predictions. We are beginning to learn the answers to some fundamental questions, using information contained in Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy (CMBA) data. In this talk, we briefly review some studies of the current and prospected constraints imposed by CMBA measurements on the neutrino physics and on the dark energy. As it was already announced by Scott (1999), we present some possible "new physics" from the Cosmic Microwave Background.
We analyse the constraints that can be placed on a cosmological constant or quintessence-like component by combining observations of Type Ia supernovae with measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. We use the recent supernovae sample of Perlmutter et al and observations of the CMB anisotropies to constraint the equation of state (w_Q = p/rho) in quintessence-like models via a likelihood analysis. The 2 sigma upper limits are w_Q < -0.6 if the Universe is assumed to be spatially flat, and w_Q < -0.4 for universes of arbitrary spatial curvature. The upper limit derived fo…
We study the angular power spectrum estimate in order to search for large scale anisotropies in the arrival directions distribution of the highest-energy cosmic rays. We show that this estimate can be performed even in the case of partial sky coverage and validated over the full sky under the assumption that the observed fluctuations are statistically spatial stationary. If this hypothesis - which can be tested directly on the data - is not satisfied, it would prove, of course, that the cosmic ray sky is non isotropic but also that the power spectrum is not an appropriate tool to represent its…
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies have and will continue to revolutionize our understanding of cosmology. The recent discovery of the previously predicted acoustic peaks in the power spectrum has established a working cosmological model: a critical density universe consisting of mainly dark matter and dark energy, which formed its structure through gravitational instability from quantum fluctuations during an inflationary epoch. Future observations should test this model and measure its key cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. The phenomenology and cos…
The new three year WMAP data seem to confirm the presence of non-standard large scale features in the Cosmic Microwave Anisotropies power spectrum. While these features may hint at uncorrected experimental systematics, it is also possible to generate, in a cosmological way, oscillations on large angular scales by introducing a sharp step in the inflaton potential. Using current cosmological data, we derive constraints on the position, magnitude and gradient of a possible step. We show that a step in the inflaton potential, while strongly constrained by current data, is still allowed and may pr…
In this work we investigate the effects of the primordial magnetic fields on cosmic microwave background anisotropies (CMB). Based on cosmological magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations we calculate the CMB anisotropy spectra and polarization induced by fluid fluctuations (Alfvén modes) generated by primordial magnetic fields. The strongest effect on the CMB spectra comes from the transition epoch from a turbulent regime to a viscous regime. The balance between magnetic and kinetic energy until the onset of the viscous regime provides a one to one relation between the comoving coherence length …
