If the gas in filaments and halos shares the same velocity field than the luminous matter, it will generate measurable temperature anisotropies due to the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We compute the distribution function of the KSZ signal produced by a typical filament and show it is highly non-gaussian. The combined contribution of the Thermal and Kinematic SZ effects of a filament of size $L\simeq 5$Mpc and electron density $n_e\simeq 10^3m^{-3}$ could explain the cold spots of $δ\sim -200μ$K on scales of 30' found in the Corona Borealis Supercluster by the VSA experiment. PLANCK, with its large resolution and frequency coverage, could provide the first evidence of the existence of filaments in this region. The KSZ contribution of the network of filaments and halo structures to the radiation power spectrum peaks around $l\sim 400$, a scale very different from that of clusters of galaxies, with a maximum amplitude $l(l+1)C_l/2π\sim 10-25 (μK)^2$, depending on model parameters, i.e., $σ_8$ and the Jeans length. About 80% of the signal comes from filaments with redshift $z\le 0.1$. Adding this component to the intrinsic Cosmic Microwave Background temperature anisotropies of the concordance model improves the fit to WMAP 3yr data by $Δχ^2\simeq 1$. The improvement is not statistically significant but a more systematic study could demonstrate that gas could significantly contribute to the anisotropies measured by WMAP.
We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal and kinematical Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects to the observer's system (the Solar System) moving with a velocity $β_{S}$ with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. We confirm the results recently obtained by Chluba, Huetsi, and Sunyaev in the lowest order of the observer's velocity $β_{S}. We give a more general analytic expression for the thermal and kinematical Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects corresponding to the observer's system with the power series expansion approximation in terms of $θ_{e}$. It is found that the effect of the mot…
We apply the coherency tensor formalism to the calculation of the spectral distortions imprinted in the intensity and polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation due to the kinematic and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects (SZE). We obtain the first relativistic corrections to the intensity produced by the kinematic and thermal SZE, and the first correction to the polarization magnitude due to electron thermal motion.
This brief, general review the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect includes a description of the calculation of the total intensity change and polarization components, a discussion of the basic properties of the S-Z power spectrum and cluster number counts, and a summary of the main observational results.
X-ray background surveys indicate the likely presence of diffuse warm gas in the Local Super Cluster (LSC), in accord with expectations from hydrodynamical simulations. We assess several other manifestations of warm LSC gas; these include anisotropy in the spatial pattern of cluster Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) counts, its impact on the CMB temperature power spectrum at the lowest multipoles, and implications on measurements of the S-Z effect in and around the Virgo cluster.
We show how the temperature and the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background are affected by bulk rotation of clusters of galaxies owing to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The main effects of rotation are (i) a shift of the position of the peak of the temperature fluctuation relative to the center of the cluster by a few percent of the core radius and (ii) a tilt of the direction of the plane of linear polarisation by several degrees.
We consider the role of the galactic kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect as a CMB foreground. While the galactic thermal Sunyaev Zeldovich effect has previously been studied and discarded as a potential CMB foreground, we find that the kinetic SZ effect is dominant in the galactic case. We analyse the detectability of the kinetic SZ effect by means of an optimally matched filter technique applied to a simulation of an ideal observation. We obtain no detection, getting a S/N ratio of 0.1, thereby demonstrating that the kinetic SZ effect can also safely be ignored as a CMB foreground. However …
We improve the calculation of Nozawa, Itoh, and Kohyama (1998) to provide a formula for relativistic corrections to the thermal and kinematical Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects that is accurate to fourth order in theta_e = kT_e/m_ec^2, T_e and m_e being the electron temperature and electron mass, respectively. We also carry out a direct numerical integration of the Boltzmann collision term and confirm the excellent accuracy of the analytic formula. This formula will be useful for the analysis of the observational data of the forthcoming experiments of the kinematical Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect for clus…
The polarization of the CMBR scattered by galaxy clusters in the kinematic Sunyaev Zeldovich effect depends on the transverse velocity of the cluster. This polarizing effect is proportional to the transverse velocity squared, and so weaker that the change in intensity due to the radial motion in the kinematic effect. The value given by Sunyaev and Zeldovich, and which is frequently cited, underestimates the polarizing effect by a factor of ten. We show furthermore that the polarization has a strong frequency dependence. This means that the polarization should be detectable with the new generat…
Galaxy clusters are not iso-thermal, and the radial temperature dependence will affect the cluster parameters derived through the observation of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We show that the derived peculiar velocity will be systematically shifted by 10-20%. For future all-sky surveys one cannot rely on the observationally expensive X-ray observations to remove this systematic error, but one should instead reach for sufficient angular resolution to perform a deprojection in the SZ spectra. The Compton weighted electron temperature is accurately derived through SZ observations.
Galaxy cluster surveys compiled via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect have the potential to place strong constraints on cosmology, and in particular the nature of dark energy. Here we consider cluster velocity surveys using kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich measurements. Cluster velocities closely trace the large-scale velocity field independent of cluster mass; we demonstrate that two useful cluster velocity statistics are nearly independent of cluster mass, in marked contrast to cluster number count statistics. On the other hand, cluster velocity determinations from three-band observations of Sunyaev-Zel…
Precision measurements of the Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect in upcoming blank sky surveys require theoretical understanding of all physical processes with $\ga 10%$ effects on the SZ power spectrum. We show that, observed cluster magnetic field could reduce the SZ power spectrum by $\sim 20%$ at $l\sim 4000$, where the SZ power spectrum will be precisely measured by the Sunyaev Zeldovich array (SZA) and the Atacama cosmology telescope (ACT). At smaller scale, this effect is larger and could reach a factor of several. Such effect must be considered for an unbiased interpretation of the SZ data.…
We present a user-friendly tool for the analysis of data from Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect observations. The tool is based on the stochastic method of simulated annealing, and allows the extraction of the central values and error-bars of the 3 SZ parameters, Comptonization parameter, y, peculiar velocity, v_p, and electron temperature, T_e. The f77-code SASZ will allow any number of observing frequencies and spectral band shapes. As an example we consider the SZ parameters for the COMA cluster.
We present a determination of the Hubble constant from measurements of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) in an orientation-unbiased sample of 7 z < 0.1 galaxy clusters. With improved X-ray models and a more accurate 32-GHz calibration, we obtain H_O = 64+14-11 +/- 14_sys km/s/Mpc. for a standard CDM cosmology, or 66+14-11 +/- 15_sys km/s/Mpc for a flat LambdaCDM cosmology. In combination with X-ray cluster measurements and the BBN value for Omega_B, we find Omega_M = 0.32 +/- 0.05.
Clusters of galaxies contain a fair sample of the universal baryonic mass fraction. A combined analysis of the intracluster medium (ICM) within their hydrostatic regions, as derived from both Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) measurements and X-ray images, makes it possible to constrain the cosmological parameters. We consider both gas fraction estimates and angular diameter distance measurements. Adopting median statistics, we find, at the 2-$σ$ level, the pressureless matter density, $Ω_{\rm M0}$, to be between 0.30 and 0.40 and the Hubble constant, $H_0$, between 44 and 66 Km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1…
Quasar-driven winds are currently the best candidates for accounting for the pre-heating of the intergalactic medium in clusters. Such winds, occurring during early phases of the evolution of spheroidal galaxies, shock-heat the interstellar gas, thus inducing a detectable Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We estimate the amplitude and the angular scale of such effect as well as its counts as a function of the comptonization parameter $y$. The contamination due to radio emission by the quasar itself is also discussed. The corresponding mean Compton distortion of the cosmic microwave background spectrum…
We propose a new cluster deprojection algorithm for recovering cluster structure along the line of sight (los) based on the Richardson-Lucy (RL) algorithm, which recovers a nonnegative theoretical distribution from a given projection. To optimize our reconstruction we combine X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) data with gravitational lensing maps. The combination of these three data types constrains the structure of rich clusters of galaxies. To validate our new approach, we apply the algorithm to gas-dynamical cluster simulations. A reconstruction using the lensing potential is shown.
The redshift dependence of the observed cluster abundance due to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) is studied in various cosmological models including flat and open homogeneous (CDM) models and an inhomogeneous model with a large-scale local void. The Press-Schechter formalism is used to derive the abundance at epochs 0 < z < 2 and the cluster mass limit Mlim is given from a flux limit for SZE. It is shown that SZE is useful for constraining the cosmological model parameters, and the abundance in the inhomogeneous model may be comparable with that in the low-density homogeneous models. The si…
We present an accurate numerical table for the relativistic corrections to the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect for clusters of galaxies. The numerical results for the relativistic corrections have been obtained by numerical integration of the collision term of the Boltzmann equation. The numerical table is provided for the ranges 0.002 <= theta_e <= 0.100 and 0 <= X <= 20, where theta_e = kT_e/mc^2, X = hbar omega/kT_0, T_e is the electron temperature, omega is the angular frequency of the photon, and T_0 is the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation. We also present an accu…
X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect data can be combined to determine the distance to galaxy clusters. High-resolution X-ray data are now available from the Chandra Observatory, which provides both spatial and spectral information, and Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect data were obtained from the BIMA and OVRO arrays. We introduce a Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure for the joint analysis of X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect data. The advantages of this method are the high computational efficiency and the ability to measure simultaneously the probability distribution of all parameters of interest, suc…
We present detections of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) at 150GHz and 275GHz for the X-ray luminous z=0.299 cluster 1E0657-67. These observations were obtained as part of an X-ray, weak lensing, and SZE survey of nearby X-ray bright clusters. The SZE maps were made with the ACBAR (150, 210, 275 GHz) bolometer array installed at the Viper telescope located at the South Pole. We also present preliminary results from a blind SZE cluster survey.
We present the preparation for an observation of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect with the 100m telescope in Effelsberg. We calculate the expected diminution of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) at radio wavelength towards a small sample of clusters of galaxies: A85, A665, and Cl0016+16. We obtain the required parameters from the X-ray analysis of ROSAT PSPC data of these clusters. We derive expected central diminutions ΔT_R,max of -(440\pm 180)μK for A665 and -(810\pm 680)μK for Cl0016+16. For the cluster A85 we find evidence for a cooling flow. The best candidate for a SZ meas…
Populations of relativistic electrons in clusters of galaxies should imprint a characteristic spectral distortion signature on the Cosmic Microwave Background photons - the relativistic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We investigate how sensitive PLANCK and successor experiments will be in detecting or constraining the total optical depth tau of relativistic electrons. We find an expected sensitivity of PLANCK of sigma_tau ~ 2 10^-5 for an individual cluster, which is too insensitive to detect even optimistic scenarios, which predict tau ~ 10^-6 to 10^-7. However, by stacking the PLANCK-signal …
Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background radiation by electrons in the hot gas in clusters of galaxies - the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect - has long been recognized as a uniquely important feature, rich in cosmological and astrophysical information. We briefly describe the effect, and emphasize the need for detailed S-Z and X-ray measurements of nearby clusters in order to use the effect as a precise cosmological probe. This is the goal of the MITO project, whose first stage consisted of observations of the S-Z effect in the Coma cluster. We report the results of these observations.
We have analyzed a large sample of numerically simulated clusters to demonstrate the adverse effects resulting from use of X-ray fitted beta-model parameters with Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) data. There is a fundamental incompatibility between model fits to X-ray surface brightness profiles and those done with SZE profiles. Since observational SZE radial profiles are in short supply, the X-ray parameters are often used in SZE analysis. We show that this leads to biased estimates of the integrated Compton y-parameter inside r_{500} calculated from clusters. We suggest a simple correction of …
The signatures from Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects and free-free emission in the intergalactic and intracluster medium and at galactic scales probe the structure evolution at various cosmic times. The detection of these sources and, possibly, the precise imaging of their spatial structure at the high resolution and sensitivity achievable with SKA will greatly contribute to the comprehension of crucial cosmological and astrophysical aspects, as the physical conditions of early ionized halos, quasars and proto-galactic gas and the mapping of the thermal and density structure of clusters of galaxies, …
As part of a combined Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE), X-ray and weak lensing survey of low redshift (z<0.1) X-ray clusters, we present SZE images of the z=0.059 X-ray cluster Abell 3266 at three observing frequencies (150, 220, 275 GHz) and after the spectral subtraction of primary Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. These images were generated using the ACBAR bolometer array operated on the Viper telescope at the South Pole. The multi-frequency data from ACBAR should allow us to overcome one of the main obstacles facing the analysis of SZE observations of nearby clusters, i.e. con…
This paper reports the measurement of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) in the nearby clusters A478, A2142 and A2256 at 32 GHz. These clusters are part of a complete X-ray flux limited sample, which includes the previously measured Coma cluster. We find surface baryonic mass densities for the hot IGM within the 7.35' FWHM Gaussian beam of the OVRO 5.5-m telescope projected on the cluster centers. This is used to place lower limits on the ratio of the SZE determined baryonic mass to the gravitational binding mass. When combined with available X-ray models, the data from these three clusters an…
Various aspects of relativistic calculations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect are explored and clarified. We first formally show that the main previous approaches to the calculation of the relativistically generalized thermal component of the effect are equivalent. Our detailed description of the full effect results in a somewhat improved formulation. Analytic approximations to the exact calculation of the change of the photon occupation number in the scattering, $Δn$, are extended to powers of the gas temperature and cluster velocity that are higher than in similar published treatments. For th…
Comptonization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by hot gas in clusters of galaxies - the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect - is of great astrophysical and cosmological significance. In recent years observations of the effect have improved tremendously; high signal-to-noise images of the effect (at low microwave frequencies) can now be obtained by ground-based interferometric arrays. In the near future, high frequency measurements of the effect will be made with bolomateric arrays during long duration balloon flights. Towards the end of the decade the PLANCK satellite will extens…
In order to assess the potential of future microwave anisotropy space experiments for detecting clusters by their Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) thermal effect, we have simulated maps of the large scale distribution of their Compton parameter $y$ and of the temperature anisotropy $ΔT/T$ induced by their proper motion. Our model is based on a predicted distribution of clusters per unit redshift and flux density using a Press-Schecter approach. These maps were used to create simulated microwave sky by adding them to the microwave contributions of the emissions of our Galaxy and the primary Cosmic Microw…
Quasar feedback has most likely a substantial but only partially understood impact on the formation of structure in the universe. A potential direct probe of this feedback mechanism is the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect: energy emitted from quasar heats the surrounding intergalactic medium and induce a distortion in the microwave background radiation passing through the region. Here we examine the formation of such hot quasar bubbles using a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation which includes a self-consistent treatment of black hole growth and associated feedback, along with radiative gas cooling a…
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect has proven to be an extremely powerful tool to study the physical and evolutionary properties of rich clusters of galaxies. Upcoming SZ experiments, with their much improved sensitivity and angular resolution, will provide unique information also on phases of galaxy evolution characterized by the presence of large amounts of hot proto-galactic gas. We present a preliminary analysis of the SZ signals that can be expected at the collapse of the proto-galaxy when, according to the standard scenario, the gas is heated at its virial temperature, and during episodes…
We discuss the consequences of the spectral and morphological modification of galaxy cluster radio halos due to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect for the interpretation of existing and upcoming high frequency radio observations. Likely these modifications have affected the interpretation of the existing Coma cluster radio data. The radio halo emission visible at low (< 5 GHz) frequencies is at higher (> 10 GHz) frequencies completely over-compensated by the thermal SZ decrement. Thus, the total radio emission of a galaxy cluster goes through zero (in comparison to the constant cosmic microwave…
An observing campaign was devoted to the search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect towards X-ray ROSAT Clusters in the millimetric spectral domain. A double channel (1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) photometer was installed at the focus of the 15m Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) in Chile in september 1994 and 1995 and observations of the targets S1077, A2744, S295 and RXJ0658-5557 were gathered. Detections were found for A2744 at 1 {\it mm} and in both channels (at 1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) towards RXJ0658-5557. For the first time there is evidence for the S-Z enhancement and both the latter and t…
We apply the hierarchical clustering model and non-linear perturbation theory to the cosmological density and temperature fields. This allows us to calculate the intergalactic gas pressure power spectrum, SZ anisotropy power spectrum, skewness and related statistics. Then we show the effect of the non-gravitational heating. Our model confirms recent simulations yielding mass weighted gas temperature \bar{T}_g \sim 0.35 keV and reproduces the power spectra found in these simulations. While the SZ effect contains only angular information, we show that it is possible to extract the full time reso…
WMAP's detection of high electron-scattering optical depth suggests substantial star formation at high redshift z~17 +/- 5. On the other hand, the recovered sigma_8 ~ 0.84 +/-0.04 disfavors a cluster Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) origin for the observed small-scale-CMB fluctuation excess, which generally requires sigma_8 ~ 1.1. Here we consider the effects of high-redshift star formation on the CMB. We derive a fairly model-independent relation between the electron scattering optical depth and the number of ionizing photons emitted per baryon, and use this to calibrate the amount of high-redshift sup…
The detailed spectral and spatial characteristics of the signature imprinted on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by Compton scattering of the radiation by electrons in the hot gas in clusters of galaxies - the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect - are of great astrophysical and cosmological significance. In recent years observations of the effect have improved tremendously; high signal-to-noise images of the effect (at low microwave frequencies) can now be obtained by interferometric arrays. In the near future, high frequency measurements of the effect will be made with ground based …
The observed relationship between X-ray luminosity and temperature of the diffuse intercluster medium clearly shows the effect of nongravitational heating on the formation of galaxy clusters. Quasar feedback into the intergalactic medium can potentially be an important source of heating, and can have significant impact on structure formation. This feedback process is a source of thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich distortions of the cosmic microwave background. Using a simple one-dimensional Sedov-Taylor model of energy outflow, we calculate the angular power spectrum of the temperature distortion, whi…
We have measured the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect towards the Coma cluster (A1656) with the MITO experiment, a 2.6-m telescope equipped with a 4-channel 17 arcminute (FWHM) photometer. Measurements at frequency bands 143+/-15, 214+/-15, 272+/-16 and 353+/-13 GHz, were made during 120 drift scans of Coma. We describe the observations and data analysis that involved extraction of the S-Z signal by employing a spatial and spectral de-correlation scheme to remove a dominant atmospheric component. The deduced values of the thermal S-Z effect in the first three bands are DT_{0} = -179+/-38,-33+/-81,170+…
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect was previously measured in the Coma cluster by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Millimeter and IR Testa Grigia Observatory experiments and recently also with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe satellite. We assess the consistency of these results and their implications on the feasibility of high-frequency SZ work with ground-based telescopes. The unique data set from the combined measurements at six frequency bands is jointly analyzed, resulting in a best-fit value for the Thomson optical depth at the cluster center, tau_{0}=(5.35 \pm 0.67) 10^{-3}…
We study the spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background radiation induced by the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in clusters of galaxies when the target electrons have a modified Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with a high-energy non-thermal tail. Bremsstrahlung radiation from this type of \\ electron distribution may explain the supra-thermal X-ray emission observed in some clusters such as the Coma cluster and A2199 and serve as an alternative to the classical but problematic inverse Compton scattering interpretation. We show that the SZ effect can be used as a powerful tool to pr…
The main statistical properties of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect - the power spectrum, cluster number counts, and angular correlation function - are calculated and compared within the framework of two density fields which differ in their predictions of the cluster mass function at high redshifts. We do so for the usual Press and Schechter mass function, which is derived on the basis of a Gaussian density fluctuation field, and for a mass function based on a chi^2 distributed density field. These three S-Z observables are found to be very significantly dependent on the choice of the mass f…
The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect from clusters of galaxies should yield a significant signal in cosmic microwave background(CMB) experiments at small angular scales ($\ell \ga 1000$). Experiments with sufficient frequency coverage should be able to remove much of this signal in order to recover the primary anisotropy. The SZ signal is interesting in its own right; the amplitude and angular dependence are sensitive to both cosmology and the evolution of the gas. Combining CMB measurements with planned non-targeted SZ surveys could isolate the cosmological effects, providing CMB experiments wi…
Sunyaev-Zeldovich decrements in the temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) are produced by Thomson scattering of the CMB photons by the confined hot electrons in the Intra-Cluster Medium encountered along the line-of-sight. In this paper, we propose an alternate physical process that can produce detectable thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich decrements around quasars or quasar pairs in regions where no assembled, virialized clusters are detected either in the optical or X-ray wave-band. Invoking quasar outflows, we argue that both thermal and kinematic decrements can be produ…
We have succeeded in obtaining a precision analytic fitting formula for the exact numerical results of the relativistic corrections to the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect for clusters of galaxies which has a 1% accuracy for the crossover frequency region where the thermal thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect signal changes from negative to positive sign. The fitting has been carried out for the ranges 0.020 < theta < 0.035 and 0 < X < 15, where theta= kTe/mc^{2}, X = omega/kT0, Te is the electron temperature, omega is the angular frequency of the photon, and T0 is the temperature of the cosmic mi…
An extensive sample of galaxy clusters will be available in the coming years, detected through their Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE). We use a semi-analytic model to study the scientific yield of combining SZE data with X-ray and optical follow-up observations. If clusters at a given redshift z_o can be identified with virialized, spherical halos, they populate a well-defined "fundamental plane" (FP) in the parameter space of the three observables: virial temperature (T), total Sunyaev-Zeldovich flux decrement (DS), and angular size (theta). The location and orientation of the FP, as well as it…
We derive fully nonlinear expressions for temperature fluctuations from the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, the scattering of cosmic microwave background photons off hot electrons in bulk motion. Our result reproduces the Ostriker-Vishniac effect to second order in perturbation theory but contains nonlinear corrections to the electron velocities and densities that were neglected previously. We use the recently developed halo model for nonlinear gravitational clustering to compute the nonlinear kinetic SZ power spectrum, which dominates the primary anisotropy on small angular scales.
Observations of clusters in the 30 to 350 GHz range can in principle be used to determine a galaxy cluster's Comptonization parameter, y, peculiar velocity, v and gas temperature, T_e via the dependence of the kinetic and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effects on these parameters. Despite the significant contamination expected from thermal emission by dust in high-redshift galaxies, we find that the simultaneous determination of optical depth (tau), v and T_e is possible from observations with sensitivity of a few uK in three or more bands with arc minute resolution. After allowing for realist…
Two little explored aspects of Compton scattering of the CMB in clusters are discussed: The statistical properties of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect in the context of a non-Gaussian density fluctuation field, and the polarization patterns in a hydrodynamcially-simulated cluster. We have calculated and compared the power spectrum and cluster number counts predicted within the framework of two density fields that yield different cluster mass functions at high redshifts. This is done for the usual Press & Schechter mass function, which is based on a Gaussian density fluctuation field, and for…
The recently approved COBRAS/SAMBA cosmic microwave background mission will also have a major impact on measurements of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The frequency of three of the channels (150 GHz, 217 GHz, 353 GHz) are chosen to optimize measurements of the thermal and kinetic SZ effect mainly caused by hot gas in clusters of galaxies. Estimates of the number of detected clusters are somewhat uncertain due to incomplete knowledge of the gas mass function of clusters and the distribution of hot gas at large radii. Straightforward interpolation of X-ray observations of the 200 X-ray brightest …
We investigate empirical scaling relations between the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) and cluster mass in simulated clusters of galaxies. The simulated clusters have been compiled from four different samples that differ only in their assumed baryonic physics. We show that the strength of the thermal SZE integrated over a significant fraction of the virialized region of the clusters is relatively insensitive to the detailed heating and cooling processes in the cores of clusters by demonstrating that the derived scaling relations are nearly identical between the four cluster samples cons…
Values of the Hubble constant reported to date which are based on measurement of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect in clusters of galaxies are systematically lower than those derived by other methods (e.g., Cepheid variable stars, or the Tully-Fisher relation). We investigate the possibility that systematic errors may be introduced into the analysis by the generally adopted assumptions that observed clusters are in hydrostatic equilibrium, are spherically symmetric, and are isothermal. We construct self-consistent theoretical models of merging clusters of galaxies using hydrodynamical/N-body s…
We use multi-frequency information in first year WMAP data to search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. WMAP has sufficiently broad frequency coverage to constrain SZ without the addition of higher frequency data: the SZ power spectrum amplitude is expected to increase 50% from W to Q frequency band. This, in combination with the low noise in WMAP, allows us to strongly constrain the SZ contribution. We derive an optimal frequency combination of WMAP cross-spectra to extract SZ in the presence of noise, CMB, and radio point sources, which are marginalized over. We find that the SZ contribu…
We introduce a new statistic to measure more accurately the cosmic sound speed of clusters of galaxies at different redshifts. This statistic is evaluated by cross-correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations caused by the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect from observed clusters of galaxies with their redshifts. When clusters are distributed in redshift bins of narrow width, one could measure the mean squared cluster peculiar velocity with an error σ_{C_S^2}\lsim (300{\rm km/s})^2. This can be done around z>0.3 with clusters of flux above 200 mJy which will be detected by PLANCK, coupled…
Measurements of the Hubble constant to distant galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect are systematically low in comparison to values obtained by other means. These measurements usually assume a spherical isothermal $β$ model for the intracluster medium (ICM). We present the results of a statistical analysis of {\em temperature bias} in $H_0$ determinations in a sample of 27 numerically simulated X-ray clusters drawn from a $Λ$CDM model at z=0.5. We employ adaptive mesh refinement to provide high resolution (15.6 h$^{-1} kpc$) in cluster cores which dominate the X-ray and radio sign…
X-ray observations of an "entropy floor" in nearby groups and clusters of galaxies offer evidence that important non-gravitational processes, such as radiative cooling and/or "preheating", have strongly influenced the evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM). We examine how the presence of an entropy floor modifies the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. A detailed analysis of scaling relations between X-ray and SZ effect observables and also between the two primary SZ effect observables is presented. We find that relationships between the central Compton parameter and the temperature or …
Knowledge of the intrinsic shape of galaxy clusters is very important in investigating cosmic structure formation and astrophysical processes. The reconstruction of the 3-dimensional structure usually relies on deprojecting 2-dimensional X-ray, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) and/or gravitational lensing observations. As known, a joint analysis of these data sets can provide the elongation of the cluster along the line of sight together with its length and width in the plane of the sky. An unbiased measurement of the Hubble constant can be also inferred. Due to some intrinsic degeneracies, the observat…
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect gives a measure of the thermal energy and electron pressure in groups and clusters of galaxies. In the near future SZ surveys will map hundreds of systems, shedding light on the pressure distribution in the systems. The thermal energy is related to the total mass of a system of galaxies, but it is only a projection that is observed through the SZ effect. A model for the 3D distribution of pressure is needed to link the SZ signal to the total mass of the system. In this work we construct an empirical model for the 2D and 3D SZ profile, and compare it to a set o…
We present a new method for component separation aimed to extract Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) galaxy clusters from multifrequency maps of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. This method is designed to recover non-Gaussian, spatially localized and sparse signals. We first characterize the cluster non-Gaussianity by studying it on simulated SZ maps. We the apply our estimator on simulated observations of the Planck and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) experiments. The method presented here outperforms multi-frequency Wiener filtering both in the reconstructed average intensity for given i…
Galaxy clusters are potentially powerful probes of the large-scale velocity field in the Universe because their peculiar velocity can be estimated directly via the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (kSZ). Using high-resolution cosmological simulations of an evolving cluster of galaxies, we evaluate how well the average velocity obtained via a kSZ measurement reflects the actual cluster peculiar velocity. We find that the internal velocities in the intracluster gas are comparable to the overall cluster peculiar velocity, 20 to 30% of the sound speed even when a cluster is relatively relaxed. N…
