We study the constraints on reionization from five years of WMAP data, parametrizing the evolution of the average fraction of ionized hydrogen with principal components that provide a complete basis for describing the effects of reionization on large-scale E-mode polarization. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, we find that the resulting model-independent estimate of the total optical depth is nearly twice as well determined as the estimate from 3-year WMAP data, in agreement with simpler analyses that assume instantaneous reionization. The mean value of the optical depth from principal components is slightly larger than the instantaneous value; we find tau=0.097+/-0.017 using only large-scale polarization, and tau=0.101+/-0.019 when temperature data is included. Likewise, scale invariant n_s=1 spectra are no longer strongly disfavored by WMAP alone. Higher moments of the ionization history show less improvement in the 5-year data than the optical depth. By plotting the distribution of polarization power for models from the MCMC analysis, we show that extracting most of the remaining information about the shape of the reionization history from the CMB requires better measurements of E-mode polarization on scales of l~10-20. Conversely, the quadrupole and octopole polarization power is already predicted to better than cosmic variance given any allowed ionization history at z<30 so that more precise measurements will test the LambdaCDM paradigm.
We show that the delay of structure formation can not fully account for the reduction of electron optical depth from WMAP1 to WMAP3 when the radiative transfer effects and feedback mechanisms are took into account in computing the reionization history of the Universe. We also show that a PopIII stellar cluster with a mass of 80Mo and a heavy Larson initial mass function has an ionizing efficiency high enough to account for WMAP3 results, while in the case of WMAP1, a higher stellar mass of 1000Mo was required.
I show that advanced simulations of cosmological reionization are able to fit the observed data on the mean transmitted flux in the hydrogen Lyman-alpha line at z~6. At the same time, posteriori models can be constructed that also produce a large value (20%) for the Thompson scattering optical depth, consistent with the WMAP measurements. Thus, it appears that a consistent picture emerges in which early reionization (as suggested by WMAP) is complete by z~6 in accord with the SLOAN data.
We study the reionization histories where ionizing UV photons are emitted from decaying particles, in addition to usual contributions from stars and quasars, taking account of the fact that the universe is not fully ionized until z = 6 as observed by Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Likelihood analysis of the three-year data from the WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) severely constrains the decaying particle scenario. In particular, the decaying particle with relatively short lifetime is not favored by the polarization data.
The WMAP first year detection of a high redshift reionization through its imprints on CMB anisotropy T and TE mode angular power spectra calls for a better comprehension of the universe ionization and thermal history after the standard recombination. Different reionization mechanisms predict different signatures in the CMB, both in temperature and polarization anisotropies and in spectral distortions. The Planck capability to distinguish among different scenarios through its sensitivity to T, TE, and E mode angular power spectra is discussed. Perspectives open by future high sensitivity experi…
New results on the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and its polarization based on the first 3 years of data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have revised the electron scattering optical depth downward from tau_es=0.17+0.08-0.07 to tau_es=0.09+/-0.03. This implies a shift of the effective reionization redshift from z_r~17 to z_r~11. Previous attempts to explain the high redshift of reionization inferred from the WMAP 1 year data have led to widespread speculation that the sources of reionization must have been much more efficient than those associated with…
I calculate a hybrid cross-power spectrum estimator from the WMAP 5-year CMB temperature maps, discuss the goodness of fit, and then constrain cosmological parameters. The spectrum and results are generally consistent with previous results, though the power spectrum error bars are slightly smaller and there are small shifts at high ell. The small improvement in error bars is obtained at very low numerical cost but does not significantly improve parameter constraints. I discuss the accuracy of the likelihood model and how constraints on the optical depth translate into constraints on the reioni…
On large angular scales, the polarization of the CMB contains information about the evolution of the average ionization during the epoch of reionization. Interpretation of the polarization spectrum usually requires the assumption of a fixed functional form for the evolution, e.g. instantaneous reionization. We develop a model-independent method where a small set of principal components completely encapsulate the effects of reionization on the large-angle E-mode polarization for any reionization history within an adjustable range in redshift. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, we apply thi…
We investigate two sets of two-epoched reionization models and their manifestation in the CMB anisotropy and polarization data of the recent WMAP project and make some predictions for the future PLANCK missions. In the first set of models, the universe was reionized twice, first at z~15 by population III stars and then at z~6 by stars in large galaxies. In the second set of models, the extra peak-like reionization at high redshifts z > 100 is induced by the decay of unstable particles, followed by the standard picture of reionization at z~6. We examine the general properties of these two-epoch…
We investigate the dependence of the epoch of reionization on the properties of cosmological perturbations, in the context of cosmologies permitted by WMAP. We compute the redshift of reionization using a simple model based on the Press-Schechter approximation. For a power-law initial spectrum we estimate that reionization is likely to occur at a redshift $z_{reion} = 17^{+10}_{-7}$, consistent with the WMAP determination based on the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum. We estimate the delay in reionization if there is a negative running of the spectral index, as weakly indicated by…
Reducing the power on small scales relative to the `standard' LCDM model alleviates a number of possible discrepancies with observations, and is favored by the recent analysis of WMAP plus galaxy and Lyman-alpha forest data. Here, we investigate the epoch of reionization in several models normalized to WMAP on large scales, and with sufficiently reduced power on small scales to solve the halo concentration and substructure problems. These include a tilted model, the WMAP running-index model, and a Warm Dark Matter model. We assume that the Universe was reionized by stellar sources comprised of…
The first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data suggest a high optical depth for Thomson scattering of 0.17 +/- 0.04, implying that the universe was reionized at an early epoch, z ~ 20. Such early reionization is likely to be caused by UV photons from first stars, but it appears that the observed high optical depth can be reconciled within the standard structure formation model only if star-formation in the early universe was extremely efficient. With normal star-formation efficiencies, cosmological models with non-Gaussian density fluctuations may circumvent this conflict as high den…
We present constraints on cosmological and star formation parameters based on combining observations of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and high-redshift quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use a semi-analytic model for reionization (Chiu and Ostriker 2000) that takes into account a number of important physical processes both within collapsing halos and in the intergalactic medium. Assuming that the efficiency of producing UV photons per baryon is constant, we derive a constraint of the form sigma_8 Omega_0^0.5~0.33 in a flat, Lambda-dominated universe with h=0…
The recent discovery of a high optical depth tau to Thomson scattering from the WMAP data implies that significant reionization took place at redshifts z~15. This discovery has important implications for the sources of reionization, and allows, for the first time, constraints to be placed on physical reionization scenarios out to redshift z~20. Using a new suite of semi-analytic reionization models, we show that the high value of tau requires a surprisingly high efficiency epsilon of the first generation of UV sources for injecting ionizing photons into the intergalactic medium. We find that n…
We present constraints on the cosmological and reionization parameters based on the cumulative mass function of the Ly-alpha systems. We find that the analysis of the cumulative mass function of the Ly-alpha systems indicates a reionization redshift z_r=24.2\+-4 (68%CL) in agreement with the value found on the basis of the WMAP anisotropy measurements, setting constraints on the amplitude of the density contrast, sigma_8=0.91+-0.04 (68\CL), similar to those derived from the X-ray cluster temperature function. Our joint analysis of Ly-alpha cumulative mass function and WMAP anisotropy measureme…
Large-scale polarization of the cosmic microwave background measured by the WMAP satellite requires a mean optical depth to Thomson scattering, tau_e ~ 0.17. The reionization of the universe must therefore have begun at relatively high redshift. We have studied the reionization process using supercomputer simulations of a large and representative region of a universe which has cosmological parameters consistent with the WMAP results. Our simulations follow both the radiative transfer of ionizing photons and the formation and evolution of the galaxy population which produces them. A previously …
The recent observations of cross temperature-polarization power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) made by the WMAP satellite are in better agreement with a high value of the Thomson scattering optical depth τ\approx 0.17. This value is close to τ= 0.3, which is taken as the upper limit in the parameter extraction analysis made by the WMAP team. However, models with τ\sim 0.3 provide a good fit to current CMB data and are not significantly excluded when combined with Large Scale Structure data. By making use of a self-consistent reionization model, we verify the astrophysical fea…
This paper focuses on cosmological constraints derived from analysis of WMAP data alone. A simple LCDM cosmological model fits the five-year WMAP temperature and polarization data. The basic parameters of the model are consistent with the three-year data and now better constrained: Omega_b h^2 = 0.02273+-0.00062, Omega_c h^2 = 0.1099+-0.0062, Omega_L = 0.742+-0.030, n_s = 0.963+0.014- 0.015, tau = 0.087+-0.017, sigma_8 = 0.796+-0.036. With five years of polarization data, we have measured the optical depth to reionization, tau>0, at 5 sigma significance. The redshift of an instantaneous reioni…
The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has mapped the full sky in Stokes I, Q, and U parameters at frequencies 23, 33, 41, 61, and 94 GHz. We detect correlations between the temperature and polarization maps significant at more than 10 standard deviations. The correlations are inconsistent with instrument noise and are significantly larger than the upper limits established for potential systematic errors. Correlations on small angualr scales are consistent with the the signal expected from adiabatic initial conditions. We detect excess power on large angular scales consistent with an …
We present up-to-date constraints on the value of the fine-structure constant at the epoch of decoupling from the recent observations made by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite. In the framework of models we considered, a positive (negative) variation of the value of $α$ at decoupling with respect to the present-day value is now bounded to be smaller than 2% (6%) at 95% confidence level. We point out that the existence of an early reionization epoch as suggested by the above measurements will, when more accurate cosmic microwave background polarization data is available,…
Loops formed from a cosmic string network at early times would act as seeds for early formation of halos, which would form galaxies and lead to early reionization. With reasonable guesses about astrophysical and string parameters, the cosmic string scale $Gμ$ must be no more than about $3\times 10^{-8}$ to avoid conflict with the reionization redshift found by WMAP. The bound is much stronger for superstring models with a small string reconnection probability. For values near the bound, cosmic string loops may explain the discrepancy between the WMAP value and theoretical expectations.
The correlations are present in all WMAP frequency bands with similar amplitude from 23 to 94 GHz, and are consistent with a superposition of a CMB signal with a weak foreground. The fitted CMB component is robust against different data combinations and fitting techniques. On small angular scales theta < 5 deg, the WMAP data show th…
In light of the recent inference of a high optical depth to Thomson scattering, tau, from the WMAP data we investigate the effects of extended periods of partial ionization and ask if the value of tau inferred by assuming a single sharp transition is an unbiased estimate. We construct and consider several representative ionization models and evaluate their signatures in the CMB. If tau is estimated with a single sharp transition we show that there can be a significant bias in the derived value (and therefore a bias in sigma8 as well). For WMAP noise levels the bias in tau is smaller than the s…
A remarkable result of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations is that the universe was significantly reionized at large redshifts. The standard explanation is that massive stars formed early and reionized the universe around redshift z=17. Here we explore an alternative possibility, in which the universe was reionized in two steps. An early boost of reionization is provided by a decaying sterile neutrino, whose decay products, relativistic electrons, result in partial ionization of the smooth gas. We demonstrate that a neutrino with a mass of m_nu ~ 200 MeV and a decay ti…
(abridged) We study high redshift structure formation and reionization in a LCDM universe under the assumption that the spectral power index of primordial density fluctuations is a function of length scale. We adopt a particular formulation of the running spectral index (RSI) model as suggested by the recent WMAP data. While early structure forms hierarchically in the RSI model, the reduced power on small scales causes a considerable delay in the formation epoch of low mass (~ 10^6 Msun) ``mini-halos'' compared to the LCDM model. The extremely small number of gas clouds in the RSI model indica…
We discuss upcoming opportunities with cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations during the post-WMAP era. The curl-modes of CMB polarization probe inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs). While a significant source of confusion is expected from cosmic shear conversion of polarization related to density perturbations, higher resolution observations of CMB anisotropies can be used for a lensing reconstruction and to separate gravitational-wave polarization signature from that of lensing. Separations based on current lensing reconstruction techniques allow the possibility to probe inflation…
We show that numerical simulations of reionization that resolve the Lyman Limit systems (and, thus, correctly count absorptions of ionizing photons) have converged to about 10% level for 5<z<6.2 and are in reasonable agreement (within 10%) with the SDSS data in this redshift interval. The SDSS data thus constraint the redshift of overlap of cosmic HII regions to z_{OVL} = 6.1+-0.15. At higher redshifts, the simulations are far from convergence on the mean Gunn-Peterson optical depth, but achieve good convergence for the mean neutral hydrogen fraction. The simulations that fit the SDSS data, ho…
The first-year WMAP data release showed that the reionization optical depth to CMB photons is greater than previously thought. This follows from unexpectedly high values of the C^TE_l spectrum, for l up to ~30, presumably allowing a measurement of the E-mode polarization spectrum C^E_l sooner than expected. This note aims to test the capability of large-angle polarization experiments to explore the history of the cosmological reionization, considering also the impact of cosmic variance. In particular, here we discuss how well the ionized fraction x_e and the reionization redshift z_r can be se…
The reionization of the Universe has profound effects on the way galaxies form and on their observed properties at later times. Of particular importance is the relative timing of the reionization history of a region and its halo assembly history, which can affect the nature of the first stars formed in that region, the properties and radial distribution of its stellar halo, globular cluster population and its satellite galaxies. We distinguish two basic cases for the reionization of a halo - internal reionization, whereby the stars forming in situ reionize their host galaxy, and external reion…
We show that the delay of structure formation from WMAP3 can not fully account for the reduction of electron optical depth from WMAP1 to WMAP3 when the radiative transfer effects and feedback mechanisms are took into account in computing the reionization history of the Universe. As the ultimate limit in constraining the reionizatin history of the Universe with Planck will be placed by the our understanding of systematic effects and foregrounds removal, we discuss also these aspects.
An estimate for the number of ionizing photons per baryon as a function of redshift is computed based on the plausible extrapolation of the observed galaxy UV luminosity function and the latest results on the properties of the escape fraction of ionizing radiation. It is found that, if the escape fraction for low mass galaxies (Mtot<10^{11}Msun) is assumed to be negligibly small, as indicated by numerical simulations, then there are not enough ionizing photons to reionize the universe by z=6 for the cosmology favored by the WMAP 3rd year results, while the WMAP 1st year cosmology is marginally…
We consider different renormalizable models of Lorentz invariance violation. We show that the limits on birefringence of the propagation of cosmic microwave background photons from the five year data of the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP) can be translated into a limit of Lorentz symmetry violation. The obtained limits on Lorentz invariance violation are stronger than other published limits. We also cast them in terms of limits on a birefringent effective photo "mass" and on a polarization dependence of the speed of light.
We calculate the reionization history in Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models. The epoch of the end of reionization and the Thomson scattering optical depth to the cosmic microwave background depend on the power spectrum amplitude on small scales and on the ionizing photon emissivity per unit mass in collapsed halos. We calibrate the emissivity to reproduce the measured ionizing background intensity at z=4. Models in which all CDM halos have either a constant emissivity or a constant energy emitted per Hubble time, per unit mass, predict that reionization ends near z~6 and the optical depth is in the…
The recent release of data on (i) high redshift source counts from NICMOS HUDF, and (ii) electron scattering optical depth from 3-year WMAP, require a re-examination of reionization scenarios. Using an improved self-consistent model, based on Choudhury & Ferrara (2005), we determine the range of reionization histories which can match a wide variety of data sets simultaneously. From this improved analysis we find that hydrogen reionization starts around z = 15, driven by the metal-free stars (with normal Salpeter-like IMF), and is 90% complete by z = 10. The photoionizing power of PopIII stars …
The vacuum inflation with a boundary condition specified at a short-distance scale in a generally primeval non-flat Universe, and implications of the correspondingly modified primordial power spectrum via the WMAP data are investigated. We obtain a general form of the modified primordial power spectrum including the effects of both possibly new physics scale and the spatial curvature. The modulation of the primordial power spectrum due to new physics is of the order $H/Λ$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter during inflation and $Λ$ is the new physics scale that is key to inflation, while the mo…
We present the results of an extragalactic point source search using the five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz (Q-, V- and W-band) temperature maps. This work is an extension of our point source search in the WMAP maps applying a CMB-free technique. An internal linear combination (ILC) map has been formed from the three-band maps, with the weights chosen to remove the CMB anisotropy signal as well as to favor a selection of flat-spectrum sources. We find 381 sources at the > 5 sigma level outside the WMAP point source detection mask in the ILC map, among which 89 are "new" (i.e., not present in the…
We present full sky microwave maps in five bands (23 to 94 GHz) from the WMAP first year sky survey. Calibration errors are <0.5% and the low systematic error level is well specified. The 2<l<900 anisotropy power spectrum is cosmic variance limited for l<354 with a signal-to-noise ratio >1 per mode to l=658. The temperature-polarization cross-power spectrum reveals both acoustic features and a large angle correlation from reionization. The optical depth of reionization is 0.17 +/- 0.04, which implies a reionization epoch of 180+220-80 Myr (95% CL) after the Big Bang at a redshift of 20+10-9 (9…
A primordial magnetic field in the early universe will cause Faraday rotation of the linear polarization of the cosmic microwave background generated via Compton scattering at the surface of last scattering. This rotation induces a non-zero parity-odd (B-mode) polarization component. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 5-year data puts an upper limit on the magnitude of the B-polarization power spectrum; assuming that the B-polarization signal is totally due to the Faraday rotation effect, the upper limits on the comoving amplitude of a primordial stochastic magnetic field range fr…
We study the reionization history of the Universe in cosmological models with non-Gaussian density fluctuations, taking them to have a renormalized $χ^2$ probability distribution function parametrized by the number of degrees of freedom, $ν$. We compute the ionization history using a simple semi-analytical model, considering various possibilities for the astrophysics of reionization. In all our models we require that reionization is completed prior to $z=6$, as required by the measurement of the Gunn--Peterson optical depth from the spectra of high-redshift quasars. We confirm previous results…
I present a model devoid of non-baryonic cold dark matter (CDM) which provides an acceptable fit to the WMAP data for the power spectrum of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic background radiation (CBR). An a priori prediction of such no-CDM models was a first-to-second peak amplitude ratio A1:2 = 2.4. WMAP measures A1:2 = 2.34 +/- 0.09. The baryon content is the dominant factor in fixing this ratio; no-CDM models which are consistent with the WMAP data are also consistent with constraints on the baryon density from the primordial abundances of 2H, 4He, and 7Li. However, in order to match t…
We study the evolution of baryonic gas before the reionization in the lognormal (LN) model of cosmic clustering. We show that the thermal history of the universe around the reionization can roughly be divided into three epochs: 1) cold dark age $z>z_r$, in which baryon gas is neutral, and opaque to Ly$α$ photons; 2) hot dark age $z_r > z> z_{gp}$, in which a predominant part of baryon gas is ionized and hot, but it is still opaque to Ly$α$ photons; 3) bright age $z<z_{gp}$, in which the universe is ionized highly enough to be transparent to Ly$α$ photons. In the flat cold dark matter cosmologi…
We study CMB secondary anisotropies produced by inhomogeneous reionization by means of cosmological simulations coupled with the radiative transfer code CRASH. The reionization history is consistent with the WMAP Thomson optical depth determination. We find that the signal arising from this process dominates over the primary CMB component for l > 4000 and reaches a maximum amplitude of l(l+1)C_l/2π~ 1.6 x 10^{-13} on arcmin scale, i.e. l as large as several thousands. We then cross-correlate secondary CMB anisotropy maps with neutral hydrogen 21cm line emission fluctuations obtained from the s…
Cosmology and other scientific results from the WMAP mission require an accurate knowledge of the beam patterns in flight. While the degree of beam knowledge for the WMAP one-year and three-year results was unprecedented for a CMB experiment, we have significantly improved the beam determination as part of the five-year data release. Physical optics fits are done on both the A and the B sides for the first time. The cutoff scale of the fitted distortions on the primary mirror is reduced by a factor of ~2 from previous analyses. These changes enable an improvement in the hybridization of Jupite…
The recent measurement by WMAP of a large electron scattering optical depth tau_e = 0.17 +- 0.04 is consistent with a simple model of reionization in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) is ionized at redshift z ~ 15, and remains highly ionized thereafter. Here, we show that existing measurements of the IGM temperature from the Lyman-alpha forest at z ~ 2 - 4 rule out this ``vanilla'' model. Under reasonable assumptions about the ionizing spectrum, as long as the universe is reionized before z = 10, and remains highly ionized thereafter, the IGM reaches an asymptotic thermal state which is too…
In this paper, we revisit brane inflation models with the WMAP five-year results. The WMAP five-year data favor a red-tilted power spectrum of primordial fluctuations at the level of two standard deviations, which is the same as the WMAP three-year result qualitatively, but quantitatively the spectral index is slightly greater than the three-year value. This result can bring impacts on brane inflation models. According to the WMAP five-year data, we find that the KKLMMT model can survive at the level of one standard deviation, and the fine-tuning of the parameter $β$ can be alleviated to a cer…
We present a new estimate of foreground emission in the WMAP data, using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The new technique delivers maps of each foreground component for a variety of foreground models, error estimates of the uncertainty of each foreground component, and provides an overall goodness-of-fit measurement. The resulting foreground maps are in broad agreement with those from previous techniques used both within the collaboration and by other authors. We find that for WMAP data, a simple model with power-law synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust components fits 90% of th…
We characterize spinning dust emission in the warm ionized medium by comparing templates of Galactic dust and Halpha with the 5-year maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. The Halpha-correlated microwave emission deviates from the thermal bremsstrahlung (free-free) spectrum expected for ionized gas, exhibiting an additional broad bump peaked at ~40 GHz which provides ~20% of the peak intensity. We confirm that the bump is consistent with a modified Draine & Lazarian (1998) spinning dust model, though the peak frequency of the emission is somewhat lower than the 50 GHz previously c…
We apply a previously developed Gibbs sampling framework to the foreground corrected 3-yr WMAP polarization data and compute the power spectrum and residual foreground template amplitude posterior distributions. We first analyze the co-added Q- and V-band data, and compare our results to the likelihood code published by the WMAP team. We find good agreement, and thus verify the numerics and data processing steps of both approaches. However, we also analyze the Q- and V-bands separately, allowing for non-zero EB cross-correlations and including two individual foreground template amplitudes trac…
The primordial curvature fluctuation spectrum is reconstructed by the cosmic inversion method using the five-year WMAP data of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy. We apply the covariance matrix analysis and decompose the reconstructed spectrum into statistically independent band-powers. The statistically significant deviation from a simple power-law spectrum suggested by the analysis of the first-year data is not found in the five-year data except possibly at one point near the border of the wavenumber domain where accurate reconstruction is possible.
We present new full-sky temperature and polarization maps in five frequency bands from 23 to 94 GHz, based on data from the first five years of the WMAP sky survey. The five-year maps incorporate several improvements in data processing made possible by the additional years of data and by a more complete analysis of the instrument calibration and in-flight beam response. We present several new tests for systematic errors in the polarization data and conclude that Ka band data (33 GHz) is suitable for use in cosmological analysis, after foreground cleaning. This significantly reduces the overall…
We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) derived from the first 5 years of WMAP data. The 5-year temperature (TT) spectrum is cosmic variance limited up to multipole l=530, and individual l-modes have S/N>1 for l<920. The best fitting six-parameter LambdaCDM model has a reduced chi^2 for l=33-1000 of chi^2/nu=1.06, with a probability to exceed of 9.3%. There is now significantly improved data near the third peak which leads to improved cosmological constraints. The temperature-polarization correlation (TE) is seen with high sign…
We describe a sampling method to estimate the polarized CMB signal from observed maps of the sky. We use a Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm to estimate the polarized CMB map, containing Q and U Stokes parameters at each pixel, and its covariance matrix. These can be used as inputs for cosmological analyses. The polarized sky signal is parameterized as the sum of three components: CMB, synchrotron emission, and thermal dust emission. The polarized Galactic components are modeled with spatially varying power law spectral indices for the synchrotron, and a fixed power law for the dust, and their…
A self-consistent formalism to jointly study cosmic reionization and thermal history of the IGM is presented. The model implements most of the relevant physics governing these processes, such as the inhomogeneous IGM density distribution, three different sources of ionizing photons (PopIII stars, PopII stars and QSOs), and radiative feedback. By constraining the free parameters with available data on redshift evolution of Lyman-limit systems, Gunn-Peterson and electron scattering optical depths, Near InfraRed Background (NIRB), and cosmic star formation history, we select a fiducial model, who…
We build template maps for the polarized Galactic--synchrotron emission on large angular scales (FWHM =~7$^\circ$), in the 20-90 GHz microwave range, by using WMAP data. The method, presented in a recent work, requires a synchrotron total intensity survey and the {\it polarization horizon} to model the polarized intensity and a starlight polarization map to model polarization angles. The basic template is obtained directly at 23 GHz with about 94% sky--coverage by using the synchrotron map released by the WMAP team. Extrapolations to 32, 60 and 90 GHz are performed by computing a synchrotron s…
Population-III (Pop-III) starformation (SF) is thought to be quenched when the metallicity of the star-forming gas reaches a critical level. At high z, when the general intergalactic medium (IGM) was enriched with metals, the fraction of primordial gas already collapsed in minihalos was significantly larger than the fraction of primordial gas that had already been involved in Pop-III SF. We argue that this minihalo gas remained largely in a metal-free state, until these minihalos merged into large systems and formed stars. As a result, the era of Pop-III SF was significantly prolonged, leading…
Recently, the WMAP group has published their five-year data and considered the constraints on the time evolving equation of state of dark energy for the first time from the WMAP distance information. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of the usage of these distance information and find that these compressed CMB information can give similar constraints on dark energy parameters compared with the full CMB power spectrum if dark energy perturbations are included, however, once incorrectly neglecting the dark energy perturbations, the difference of the results are sizable.
The recently revised cosmological constraints from the Five-Year WMAP data ameliorate previous tension between cosmological constraints from the microwave background and from cluster abundances. We demonstrate that the revised estimates of cosmological parameters are in excellent agreement with the mass function of X-ray clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Velocity segregation between galaxies and the underlying dark matter could cause virial mass estimates to be biased, causing the mass scale of the mass function to be offset from the true value. Modest velocity segregation ($σ_{gxy}/σ_…
Theoretical studies and current observations of the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) indicate that at least two cosmic transitions occur by the time the universe reaches gas metallicities of about $10^{-3}$ of solar values. These are the cosmological reionization of the IGM, and the transition from a primordial to present-day mode of star formation. We quantify this relation through new calculations of the ionizing radiation produced in association with the elements carbon, oxygen and silicon observed in Galactic metal-poor halo stars, which are likely second-generation objects formed …
Motivated by the WMAP results indicating an early epoch of reionization, we consider alternative cosmic star formation models which are capable of reionizing the early intergalactic medium. We develop models which include an early burst of massive stars (with several possible mass ranges) combined with standard star formation. We compute the stellar ionizing flux of photons and we track the nucleosynthetic yields for several elements: D, He4, C, N, O, Si, S, Fe, Zn. We compute the subsequent chemical evolution as a function of redshift, both in the intergalactic medium and in the interstellar …
(Abridged) The WMAP 5-year data strongly limit deviations from the minimal LCDM model. We constrain the physics of inflation via Gaussianity, adiabaticity, the power spectrum shape, gravitational waves, and spatial curvature. We also constrain the properties of dark energy, parity-violation, and neutrinos. We detect no convincing deviations from the minimal model. The parameters of the LCDM model, derived from WMAP combined with the distance measurements from the Type Ia supernovae (SN) and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), are: Omega_b=0.0456+-0.0015, Omega_c=0.228+-0.013, Omega_Lambda=…
We measure the angular power spectrum of the WMAP first-year temperature anisotropy maps. We use SpICE (Spatially Inhomogeneous Correlation Estimator) to estimate Cl's for multipoles l=2-900 from all possible cross-correlation channels. Except for the map-making stage, our measurements provide an independent analysis of that by Hinshaw etal (2003). Despite the different methods used, there is virtually no difference between the two measurements for l < 700 ; the highest l's are still compatible within 1-sigma errors. We use a novel intra-bin variance method to constrain Cl errors in a model in…
