Effects of the paramagnetic depairing on structural transitions between vortex lattices of a quasi two dimensional d-wave superconductor are examined. It is found that, in systems with Maki parameter $α_{\rm M}$ of order unity, a square lattice induced by a d-wave pairing is destabilized with {\it increasing} fields, and that a reentrant rhombic lattice occurs in higher fields. Further, a weak Fermi surface anisotropy competitive with the pairing symmetry induces another structural transition near $H_{c2}$. These results are consistent with the structure changes of the vortex lattice in CeCoIn$_5$ in ${\bf H} \parallel c$ determined from recent neutron scattering data.
Antiferromagnetic (AFM) (or spin-density wave) quantum critical fluctuation enhanced just below H_c2(0) have been often observed in d-wave superconductors with a strong Pauli paramagnetic depairing (PD) including CeCoIn_5. It is shown here that such a tendency of field-induced AFM ordering is a consequence of strong PD and should appear particularly in superconductors with a gap node along the AFM modulation. Two phenomena seen in CeCoIn_5, the anomalous vortex lattice form factor and the AFM order in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, are explained based on this peculiar PD effect.
The high field phase diagram and magnetic properties of CeCoIn_5 below H_c2(0) are examined from the picture regarding the high field and low temperature (HFLT) phase as a possible Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) vortex lattice. Crucial roles of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations enhanced close to H_c2(0) are stressed. The FFLO vortex lattice with a longitudinal modulation parallel to the field is stabilized compared with those with lateral modulations as a consequence of the presence of AFM fluctuations. Further, an unusual field-induced enhancement of the flux distribution is argue…
It is shown theoretically that, in the superconducting state with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-pairing, a strong Pauli paramagnetic depairing (PD) induces not only the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state but also an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) (or spin-density wave) ordering with ${\bf Q}$-vector nearly paralle to a gap node. This intrinsic mechanism of field-induced coexistence of the $d$-wave superconducting and AFM orders does not need to assume a pair-density wave but is enhanced by the FFLO ordering. It is argued that this is the common origin of {\it both}…
Based on a theoretical argument and Monte Carlo simulations of a Ginzburg-Landau model derived microscopically, it is argued that, in type-II superconductors where {\it both} the paramagnetic {\it and} orbital depairings are important, a strong first-order transition (FOT) at $H_{c2}$ expected in the mean field (MF) approximation never occurs in real systems and changes due to the fluctuation into a crossover. The present result explains why a {\it nearly} discontinuous crossover at $H_{c2}$ with {\it no} intrinsic hysteresis is observed only in a clean superconducting material with a singlet …
The full H-T phase diagram in the nematic superconductor FeSe is mapped out using specific-heat and thermal-expansion measurements down to 0.7 K and up to 30 T for both field directions. A clear thermodynamic signal of an underlying vortex-melting transition is found in both datasets and could be followed down to low temperatures. The existence of significant Gaussian thermal superconducting fluctuations is demonstrated by a scaling analysis, which also yields the mean-field upper critical field Hc2(T). For both field orientations, Hc2(T) shows Pauli-limiting behavior. Whereas the temperature …
The putative spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 has an Ising-like magnetic anisotropy, indicating the Cooper pair spins parallel to the easy-axis. However, the upper critical field for the hard-axis direction is much larger than that for the easy-axis, implying the strong suppression of the Pauli depairing effect even for the hard-axis direction. This observation is consistent with the recent NMR measurements which show the tiny decrease of the Knight shift below the transition temperature Tc for hard-axis magnetic fields. We clarify that these behaviors are naturally understood as a result of m…
We study vortex current distributions in narrow thin-film superconducting strips. If one defines the vortex core ``boundary" as a curve where the current reaches the depairing value, intriguing features emerge. Our conclusions based on the London approach have only qualitative relevance since the approach breaks down near the core. Still, the main observation which might be useful is that the core size near the strip edges is smaller than in the rest of the strip. If so, the Bardeen-Stephen flux-flow resistivity should be reduced near the edges. Moreover, at elevated temperatures, when the dep…
The structure and energy of saddle point (SP) states in 2D superconducting film of finite width $w$ with transport current $I$ are found in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau model. We show that very near depairing current $I_{dep}$ the SP state with a vortex does not exist and it transforms to 2D nucleus state, which is a finite region with partially suppressed order parameter. It is also shown that for slightly lower currents the contribution of the vortex core energy is important for SP state with a vortex and it cannot be neglected for $I\gtrsim 0.6 I_{dep}$. It is demonstrated that in the f…
The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional and the resultant phase diagram in strong fields where the Pauli paramagnetic depairing is not negligible are examined in details by assuming the weak coupling BCS model with a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-like pairing. In contrast to previous works on the same subject for spin-singlet pairings in which the orbital depairing effect was not treated consistently with the paramagnetic depairing, the temperature at which the mean field (MF) transition at $H_{c2}$ changes into a discontinuous one lies much above another temperature at which the $H_{c2}(T)$ and a second order tr…
Taking into account both the orbital and the paramagnetic depairing effects we derive a simple analytic formula for the temperature dependence of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter valid in vicinity of field dependent critical temperature in a type-II superconductor.

Using the quasiclassical theory, we analyze the vortex structure of strong-paramagnetic superconductors. There, induced paramagnetic moments are accumulated exclusively around the vortex core. We quantitatively evaluate the significant paramagnetic effect in the H-dependence of various quantities, such as low temperature specific heat, Knight shift, magnetization and the flux line lattice (FLL) form factor. The anomalous H-dependence of the FLL form factor observed by the small angle neutron scattering in CeCoIn_5 is attributable to the large paramagnetic contribution.
The phenomenon of superconductivity occurs in the phase space of three principal parameters: temperature T, magnetic field B, and current density Jd . The critical temperature Tc is one of the first parameters that is measured and in a certain way defines the superconductor. From the practical applications point of view, of equal importance is the upper critical magnetic field Bc2 and conventional critical current density Jc (above which the system begins to show resistance without entering the normal state). However, a seldom-measured parameter, the depairing current density Jd , holds the sa…
The magnetic response related to paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) is studied in a high quality single crystal ZrB12 with non-monotonic vortex-vortex interactions. We observe the expulsion and penetration of magnetic flux in the form of vortex clusters with increasing temperature. A vortex phase diagram is constructed which shows that the PME can be explained by considering the interplay among the flux compression, the different temperature dependencies of the vortex-vortex and the vortex-pin interactions, and thermal fluctuations. Such a scenario is in good agreement with the results of the …
We discuss the zero field superconducting phase transition in a finite system of magnetically coupled superconducting layers. Transverse screening is modified by the presence of other layers resulting in topological excitations with fractional flux. Vortex stacks trapping a full flux and present at any finite temperature undergo an evaporation transition which corresponds to the depairing of fractional-flux vortices in individual layers. We propose an experiment with a bi-layer system allowing us to identify the dissociation of bound vortex molecules.
Effects of Pauli paramagnetism on thermodynamic quantities in a vortex state, such as the specific heat $C$ and magnetization $M$, are studied using the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. We demonstrate that with an increase of paramagnetic depairing effect, the sigh of the curvature of the field dependence of $C$ changes from negative to positive, and that the Maki parameter $κ_2$ becomes an increasing function of temperature. Our results provide a natural explanation for the unusual field dependence of $C$ seen in CeCoIn$_5$ in terms of the paramagnetic effect.
We consider excited vortex states, which are vortex states left inside a superconductor once the external applied magnetic field is switched off and whose energy is lower than of the normal state. We show that this state is paramagnetic and develop here a general method to obtain its Gibbs free energy through conformal mapping. The solution for any number of vortices in any cross section geometry can be read off from the Schwarz - Christoffel mapping. The method is based on the first order equations used by A. Abrikosov to discover vortices.
We examine the depairing field $H_{c2}(T)$ of non-centrosymmetric superconductors with a spin-orbit coupling larger than the Zeeman energy at $H_{c2}(0)$ by taking account of the mixing of spin-singlet and triplet pairing states due to the missing parity. When the singlet and triplet pairing components are mixed with an equal weight in a cubic non-centrosymmetric system, the paramagnetic depairing effect is significantly suppressed so that $H_{c2}(T)$ approaches its orbital-limited value. A similar event also occurs in a quasi two-dimensional Rashba non-centrosymmetric system. The present resu…
We investigate how the geometrical symmetry affects the penetration and arrangement of vortices in mesoscopic superconductors using self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that the entrance of the vortex happens when the current density at the hot spots reaches the depairing current density. Through determining the spatial distribution of hot spots, the geometrical symmetry of the superconducting sample influences the nucleation and entrance of vortices. Our results propose one possible experimental approach to control and manipulate the quantum states of mesoscopic superconduc…
The dynamics of vortices in a type-II superconductor with defects are studied by solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations in two and three dimensions. We show that vortex flux tubes are trapped by volume defects up to a critical current density where they begin to jump between pinning sites along static flow channels. We study the dependence of the critical current on the pinning distribution and find for random distributions a maximum critical current equal to a few percent of the depairing current at a pinning density three times larger than the vortex line density. Whereas for a…
Recent experiments on the Iron-based superconductor FeSe in a high magnetic field have suggested the presence of both the fluctuation-induced vortex liquid regime and a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) vortex lattice. To get a general picture on the magnetic phase diagram in type II superconductors with strong superconducting (SC) fluctuation and strong paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) such as FeSe, the vortex lattice melting curve Hm(T) is theoretically investigated in the situations where a FFLO state is expected to occur. In general, the PPB tends to narrow the vortex liquid regime i…
Effects of the strong Pauli-paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) on the vortex lattice in d-wave superconductors are theoretically studied by putting emphasis on consequences of the PPB-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in the spatial modulation in the vortex lattice. It is shown that the PPB-induced AFM fluctuation in the superconducting state leads to an enhancement of the vortex lattice form factor which is a measure of spatial variations of the internal magnetic field and that the enhancement becomes more remarkable as an AFM instability is approached. It is also demonstrated that the P…
We expose an analysis of the magnetic field distribution in the Abrikosov lattice of high-kappa superconductors with d-wave pairing in the case where the critical field is mainly determined by the Pauli limit and the superfluid currents mainly come from the paramagnetic interaction of electron spins with the local magnetic field. The result found in frame of the generalized Clem variational approach is compatible with the recent observation that the form factor in CeCoIn_5 increases with increasing field and then decreases at the approach of H_c2. (A. D. Bianchi et al., Science vol. 319, 177 (…
We present an analysis of the magnetic field distribution in the Abrikosov lattice of high-$κ$ superconductors with singlet pairing in the case where the critical field is mainly determined by the Pauli limit and the superfluid currents partly come from the paramagnetic interaction of electron spins with the local magnetic field. The derivation is performed in the frame of the generalized Clem variational method which is valid not too close to the critical field and furthermore with the Abrikosov type theory in the vicinity of it. The found vortex lattice form factor increases with increasing …
The mean field vortex phase diagram of a quasi two dimensional superconductor with a nodal d-wave pairing and with strong Pauli spin depairing is examined in the parallel field case in order to examine an effect of gap nodes (or minima) on the stability of a FFLO-like vortex lattice. We find through a heuristic argument and a model calculation with a four-fold anisotropic Fermi velocity that the FFLO-like state is relatively suppressed as the field approaches a nodal direction. When taking account of a couple of experimental results altogether, the present result strongly suggests that a node …
We study the intrinsic anisotropy of the superconducting state in KFe$_2$As$_2$, using small-angle neutron scattering to image the vortex lattice as the applied magnetic field is rotated towards the FeAs crystalline planes. The anisotropy is found to be strongly field dependent, indicating multiband superconductivity. Furthermore, the high field anisotropy significantly exceeds that of the upper critical field, providing further support for Pauli limiting in KFe$_2$As$_2$ for field applied in the basal plane. The effect of Pauli paramagnetism on the unpaired quasiparticles in the vortex cores …
Vortex lattice structures to occur in Rashba non-centrosymmetric superconductors under a magnetic field parallel to the basal plane are studied by assuming a singlet Cooper pairing and taking account of both the paramagnetic and orbital depairings. A vortex lattice of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type with modulation perpendicular to the field is expected to occur in the limit of vanishing ${\tilde η}$, where ${\tilde η}$ is the spin-orbit coupling {\it normalized} by Fermi energy. As ${\tilde η}$ increases, however, this state tends to be replaced by another new vortex lattice with…
Using the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, we study the magnetic response of different shaped samples in the field-cooled regime (FC). For high external magnetic fluxes, the conventional diamagnetic response under cooling down can be followed by the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME). A second-order transition from a giant vortex state to a multi-vortex state, with the same vorticity, occurs at the second critical field which leads to the suppression of PME.
The fluctuation conductivity of a moderately clean type II superconductor with strong Pauli paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) is studied by focusing on the quantum regime at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. First, it is pointed out that, as the PPB effect becomes stronger, the quantum superconducting fluctuation is generally enhanced so that the Aslamasov-Larkin (AL) fluctuation conductivity tends to vanish upon cooling. Further, by examining other (the DOS and the Maki-Thompson (MT)) terms of the fluctuation conductivity, the field dependence of the resulting total conductivity is…
We have studied the influence of a square array of pinning centers on the dynamics of vortex avalanches in Pb thin films by means of ac- and dc- magnetization measurements. Close to the superconducting transition Tc the commensurability between the vortex lattice and the pinning array leads to the well known local increments of the critical current. As temperature T decreases, matching features progressively fade out and eventually disappear. Further down in temperature vortex avalanches develop and dominate the magnetic response. These avalanches manifest themselves as jumps in the dc-magneti…
The formalism for analysing the magnetic field distribution in Pauli limited superconductors developed earlier is applied to the field dependence of the vortex lattice static linewidth measured in Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) experiments. In addition to writing analytical formulae for the static linewidth for the vortex structure in the limit of independent vortices (i.e. moderate magnetic fields), we use Abrikosov's analysis to describe the field variations of the static linewidth at the approach of the superconductor to metal transition in the limit where the critical field is determined by Pa…
In high-quality nanowires, quantum confinement of the transverse electron motion splits the band of single-electron states in a series of subbands. This changes in a qualitative way the scenario of the magnetic-field induced superconductor-to-normal transition. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a clean metallic cylindrical nanowire at zero temperature in a parallel magnetic field and find that for diameters D < 10-15 nm, this transition occurs as a cascade of subsequent jumps in the order parameter (this is opposed to the smooth second-order phase transition in the me…
We report the observation of a pronounced dip in the in-plane field (H//) dependence of the critical current density Jc(H) and a peak in resistance R(H) of a NbN-HoNi5 bilayer at temperatures below the magnetic ordering temperature (TCurie ~ 5.5 K) of HoNi5, which is lower than the onset temperature (~ 9 K) of superconductivity in the NbN layer. The extrema in Jc(H) and R(H) appear at fields much below the upper critical field of NbN. It is suggested that the origin of this feature is linked with the non-collinear magnetization of HoNi5 whose normal component assists in depairing of Pearl vort…

The magnetic field distribution around the vortices in TmNi2B2C in the paramagnetic phase was studied experimentally as well as theoretically. The vortex form factor, measured by small-angle neutron scattering, is found to be field independent up to 0.6 Hc2 followed by a sharp decrease at higher fields. The data are fitted well by solutions to the Eilenberger equations when paramagnetic effects due to the exchange interaction with the localized 4f Tm moments are included. The induced paramagnetic moments around the vortex cores act to maintain the field contrast probed by the form factor.
We theoretically investigate the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state by using the microscopic quasi-classical Eilenberger equation. The Pauli paramagnetic effects and the orbital depairing effects due to vortices are treated in an equal footing for three dimensional spherical Fermi surface model and $s$-wave pairing. The field evolution of the LO state is studied in detail, such as the $H$-$T$ phase diagram, spatial structures of the order parameter, the paramagnetic moment, and the internal filed. Field-dependences of various thermodynamic quantities: the paramagnetic moment, entrop…
We investigate how the macroscopic spatial structure of broken inversion symmetry manifests in noncentrosymmetric superconductors, by the microscopic broken inversion symmetry of the crystal structure. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory including the Pauli paramagnetic effect and the Rashba interaction, we demonstrate that the centrosymmetric structures of the internal field and the screening current are broken macroscopically. The flow structure of paramagnetic supercurrent spontaneously induce the flux flow without applying external currents.
We have conducted pulsed transport measurements on c-axis oriented magnesium diboride films over the entire relevant ranges of magnetic field $0 \alt H \alt H_{c2}$ (where \hcu is the upper critical field) and current density $0 \alt j \alt j_{d}$ (where $j_{d}$ is the depairing current density). The intrinsic disorder of the films combined with the large coherence length and three-dimensionality, compared to cuprate superconductors, results in a six-fold enhancement of $H_{c2}$ and raises the depinning current density $j_{c}$ to within an order of magnitude of $j_{d}$. The current-voltage res…
We investigate the mixed state properties in a type II multiband superconductor with uniaxial anisotropy under the Pauli paramagnetic effects. Eilenberger theory extended to a multiband superconductor is utilized to describe the detailed vortex lattice properties, such as the flux line form factors, the vortex lattice anisotropy and magnetic torques. We apply this theory to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ to analyze those physical quantities obtained experimentally, focusing on the interplay between the strong two-dimensional anisotropy and the Pauli paramagnetic effects. This study allows us to understand the …
In quasi low dimensional superconductors under {\it parallel} magnetic fields applied along a conducting direction, vortex lattices with a modulation of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type {\it perpendicular} to the field may occur due to an enhanced paramagnetic depairing. As the strength of an in-plane field is varied in a Q2D material, the Josephson vortex lattices accompanied by nodal planes are formed in higher Landau level (LL) modes of the superconducting (SC) order parameter and show field-induced structural transitions. A change of orientation of nodal planes induced by these…
In 1976 Larkin and Ovchinnikov [Sov. Phys. JETP 41, 960 (1976)] predicted that vortex matter in superconductors driven by an electrical current can undergo an abrupt dynamic transition from a flux-flow regime to a more dissipative state at sufficiently high vortex velocities. Typically this transition manifests itself as a large voltage jump at a particular current density, so-called instability current density $J^*$, which is smaller than the depairing current. By tuning the effective pinning strength in Al films, using an artificial periodic pinning array of triangular holes, we show that a …
The ultra-fast dynamics of superconducting vortices harbors rich physics generic to nonequilibrium collective systems. The phenomenon of flux-flow instability (FFI), however, prevents its exploration and sets practical limits for the use of vortices in various applications. To suppress the FFI, a superconductor should exhibit a rarely achieved combination of properties: weak volume pinning, close-to-depairing critical current, and fast heat removal from heated electrons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally ultra-fast vortex motion at velocities of 10-15 km/s in a directly written Nb-C supercon…
We investigate the vortex state with Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) modulations suggested for a high field phase of CeCoIn_5. On the basis of the quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we calculate the three dimensional structure of pair potentials, internal magnetic fields, paramagnetic moments, and electronic states, for the s-wave and the d-wave pairings comparatively. The π-phase shift of the pair potential at the FFLO nodal plane or at the vortex core induces sharp peak states in the local density of states, and enhances the local paramagnetic moment. We also discuss the NMR spectrum…
We theoretically find that finite size Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconductor (which is characterized by spatially nonuniform ground state $Ψ\sim \text{exp}(-i{\bf q}_{FF}{\bf r})$ and $|Ψ|(r)=const$ in the bulk case, where $Ψ$ is a superconducting order parameter) has paramagnetic Meissner, vortex and 'onion' ground states with $|Ψ|(r) \neq const$. These states are realized due to boundary effect when the lateral size of superconductor $L \sim 1/q_{FF}$. We argue, that predicted states could be observed in thin disk/square made of superconductor-ferromagnet-normal metal trilayer with $L \simeq 150…
Thermodynamically stable vortex-antivortex structures in a quasi-two-dimensional superconductor in a tilted magnetic field are predicted. For this geometry, both orbital and spin pair-breaking effects exist, with their relative strength depending on the tilt angle Θ. The spectrum of possible states contains as limits the ordinary vortex state (for large Θ) and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state (for Θ=0). The quasiclassical equations are solved near H_{c2} for arbitrary Θand it is shown that stable states with coexisting vortices and antivortices exist in a small interval close to Θ=0.…
From the spatial structure of vortex lattice state calculated by Eilenberger theory, we study the resonance line shape of Knight shift of the paramagnetic moments in the s-wave and the d-wave superconductors, comparing with the Redfield pattern of the internal field distribution. We discuss the deviation from the temperature dependence of the Yosida function, and the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic susceptibility. In addition to the calculation in the clean limit, influences of the impurity scattering are estimated in the Born limit and in the unitary limit. These results are hel…
Possible field-temperature superconducting (SC) phase diagrams in two-band quasi-two-dimensional materials with a strong paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) are considered theoretically. Attention is paid to the case under a magnetic field $perpendicular$ to the SC layers and to essential differences from the counterpart in the ordinary single-band material. It is found by examining the $H_{c2}(T)$ curve and the vortex lattices to be realized close to $H_{c2}$ that a PPB-induced SC phase with a spatial modulation parallel to the field tends to occur more easily than in the single-band case, and t…
The electric losses in a bulk or film superconductor exposed to a parallel radio-frequency magnetic field may have three origins: In homogeneous vortex-free superconductors losses proportional to the frequency squared originate from the oscillating normal-conducting component of the charge carriers which is always present at temperatures $T>0$. With increasing field amplitude the induced supercurrents approach the depairing current at which superconductivity breaks down. And finally, if magnetic vortices can penetrate the superconductor they typically cause large losses since they move driven …
An increase of the magnetic moment in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers V(40nm)/F [F$=$Fe(1,3nm), Co(3nm), Ni(3nm)] was observed using SQUID magnetometry upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature Tc in magnetic fields of 10 Oe to 50 Oe applied parallel to the sample surface. A similar increase, often called the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), was observed before in various superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet systems. To explain the PME effect in the presented S/F bilayers a model based on a row of vortices located at the S/F interface is proposed. Acc…
We report the observation of positive magnetization on field cooling (PMFC) in low applied magnetic fields (H < 100 Oe) in a single crystal of Ca(3)Rh(4)Sn(13) near its superconducting transition temperature (T(c) approx 8.35 K). For 30 Oe < H < 100 Oe, the PMFC response crosses over to a diamagnetic response as the temperature is lowered below 8 K. For 100 Oe < H < 300 Oe, the diamagnetic response undergoes an unexpected reversal in its field dependence above a characteristic temperature (designated as T*(VL) = 7.9 K), where the field-cooled cool-down magnetization curves intersect. The in-ph…
The paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) is observed in small superconducting samples, and a number of controversial explanations of this effect are proposed, but there is as yet no clear understanding of its nature. In the present paper PME is considered on the base of the Ginzburg-Landau theory (GL). The one-dimensional solutions are obtained in a model case of a long superconducting cylinder for different cylinder radii R, the GL-parameters κand vorticities m. Acording to GL-theory, PME is caused by the presence of vortices inside the sample. The superconducting current flows around the vorte…
The 1964 reports of Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov (FFLO or LOFF) on paramagnetic enhancement of superconductivity suggested that superconductivity can persist at applied magnetic fields above both its orbital and paramagnetic limits. By forming spatially alternating superconducting and paramagnetic regions, the increase in local magnetic field in the paramagnetic region allows a reduction in field inside the superconductor. We present an FFLO phase diagram model for layered organic superconductors and confirm it with high magnetic field data from four materials. Our work suggests tha…
We report numerical simulations of large-amplitude oscillations of a trapped vortex line under a strong ac magnetic field $H(t)=H\sinωt$ parallel to the surface. The power dissipated by an oscillating vortex segment driven by the surface ac Meissner currents was calculated by taking into account the nonlinear vortex line tension, vortex mass and a nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag coefficient $η(v)$. We show that the LO decrease of $η(v)$ with the vortex velocity $v$ can radically change the field dependence of the surface resistance $R_i(H)$ caused by trapped vortices. At low fre…
By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a $d$-wave superconductor, we explore how the interplay between disorder and the orbital depairing of an external magnetic field influences the superconductor-metal transition of the hole-overdoped cuprates. For highly disordered systems, we find granular Cooper paring to persist above the critical field where the superfluid stiffness goes to zero. We also show that because the vortices are attracted to regions where the superconducting pairing is already weak, the Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon zero-bias peak in the local density of states at the v…
Vortex tilt response in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) vortex lattice is theoretically examined as a probe reflecting the spatial structure of this state. In the FFLO state with nodal planes perpendicular to the magnetic field in a quasi 2D material under a parallel field, the tilt modulus E_{2} {\it of the nodal planes} decreases as the paramagnetic effect is effectively enhanced, and this reduction of E_{2} in turn reduces the vortex tilt modulus. This reduction of vortex tilt modulus, more remarkable in more anisotropic systems, accompanying the FFLO transition may be an origin of …
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of an ideal superconducting vortex lattice in the parity-mixed pair-density wave phase of multilayer superconductors within a circular cell Ginzburg-Landau approach. In multilayer systems, due to local inversion symmetry breaking, a Rashba spin-orbit coupling is induced at the outer layers. This combined with a perpendicular paramagnetic (Pauli) limiting magnetic field stabilizes a staggered layer dependent pair-density wave phase in the superconducting singlet channel. The high-field pair-density wave phase is separated from the low-field BCS phase…
