The ultra-fast dynamics of superconducting vortices harbors rich physics generic to nonequilibrium collective systems. The phenomenon of flux-flow instability (FFI), however, prevents its exploration and sets practical limits for the use of vortices in various applications. To suppress the FFI, a superconductor should exhibit a rarely achieved combination of properties: weak volume pinning, close-to-depairing critical current, and fast heat removal from heated electrons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally ultra-fast vortex motion at velocities of 10-15 km/s in a directly written Nb-C superconductor in which a close-to-perfect edge barrier orders the vortex motion at large current values. The spatial evolution of the FFI is described using the edge-controlled FFI model, implying a chain of FFI nucleation points along the sample edge and their development into self-organized Josephson-like junctions (vortex rivers). In addition, our results offer insights into the applicability of widely used FFI models and suggest Nb-C to be a good candidate material for fast single-photon detectors.
The quasiparticle spectrum inside the vortex core in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductors are studied. The s-wave symmetry for the gap parameter is assumed. The crossover behavior from dirty to clean limit is shown by numerical calculation based on the random matrix theory.
The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the vortex state has been probed by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields (H) for clean and dirty s-wave superconductors, Y(Ni1-xPtx)2B2C and Nb1-xTaxSe2. We find that the quasiparticle DOS per vortex is appreciably H-dependent in the clean-limit superconductors, while it is H-independent in the dirty superconductors as expected from a conventional rigid normal electron core picture. We discuss possible origins for our observations in terms of the shrinking of the vortex core radius with increasing H.
We consider the problem of the vortex contribution to thermal properties of dirty d-wave superconductors. In the clean limit, Volovik has argued that the main contribution to the density of states in a d-wave superconductor arises from extended quasiparticle states which may be treated semiclassically, giving rise to a specific heat contribution δC(H)\ltsim H^{1/2} . We show that the extended states continue to dominate the dirty limit, but lead to a H \log H behavior at the lowest fields, H_{c1}\ll H\ll H_{c2}. This crossover may explain recent discrepancies in specicific heat measurements at…
We study the structure of Abrikosov vortices in two-band superconductors for different external magnetic fields and different parameters of the bands. The vortex core size determined by the coherence lengths are found to have qualitatively different behaviour from that determined by the quasiparticle density of states spatial variation. These different vortex core length scales coincide near the upper critical field, while the discrepancy between them becomes quite significant at lower fields. Within the diffusive approximation we demonstrate several generic regimes in the field dependence of …

The conductivity of vortex lattices in multiband superconductors with high concentration of impurities is calculated based on microscopic kinetic theory. Both the limits of high and low fields are considered, when the magnetic induction is close to or much smaller than the critical field strength $H_{c2}$, respectively. It is shown that in contrast to single-band superconductors the resistive properties are not universal but depend on the pairing constants and ratios of diffusivities in different bands. The low-field magneto-resistance can strongly exceed Bardeen-Stephen estimation in a quanti…
We reconsider the force-balance relation on an isolated vortex in the flux flow state within the scheme of time-dependent-Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. We define force on the vortex by the total force on superconducting electrons in the region $S$ surrounding the vortex. We derive the local momentum balance relation of superconducting electrons and then find the force-balance relation on isolated vortex with taking account of the fact that the transport current in charged superconductors are inherently spatially varying with the scale of penetration depth $λ$. We also find that nature of th…
We investigate the vortex state in a two-band superconductor with strong intraband and weak interband electronic scattering rates. Coupled Usadel equations are solved numerically and the distributions of the pair potentials and local densities of states are calculated for two bands at different values of magnetic fields. The existence of two distinct length scales corresponding to different bands is demonstrated. The results provide qualitative interpretation of recent STM experiments on vortex structure imaging in MgB_2.
The size of the vortex core in a clean superconductor is strongly temperature dependent and shrinks with decreasing temperature, decreasing to zero for T -> 0. We study this so-called Kramer-Pesch effect both for a single gap superconductor and for the case of a two gap superconductor using parameters appropriate for Magnesium Diboride. Usually, the Kramer-Pesch effect is absent in the dirty limit. Here, we show that the Kramer-Pesch effect exists in both bands of a two gap superconductor even if only one of the two bands is in the clean limit and the other band in the dirty limit, a case appr…
We investigate the multiquantum vortex states in type-II superconductor both in "clean" and "dirty" regimes defined by impurity scattering rate. Within quasiclassical approach we calculate self-consistently the order parameter distributions and electronic local density of states (LDOS) profiles. In the clean case we find the low temperature vortex core anomaly predicted analytically in G.E. Volovik, JETP Lett. {\bf 58}, 455 (1993) and obtain the interference patterns in LDOS distributions analogous to found previously in the framework of Bogolubov-de Gennes theory. In dirty regime the multiqua…
As a model for the vortex core in MgB2 we study a two band model with a clean sigma band and a dirty pi band. We present calculations of the vortex core size in both bands as a function of temperature and show that there exists a Kramer-Pesch effect in both bands even though only one of the bands is in the clean limit. We present calculations for different pi band diffusivities and coherence lengths.
We study parametric level statistics of the discretized excitation spectra inside a moving vortex core in layered superconductors with impurities. The universal conductivity is evaluated numerically for the various values of rescaled vortex velocities $κ$ from the clean case to the dirty limit case. The random matrix theoretical prediction is verified numerically in the large $κ$ regime. On the contrary in the low velocity regime, we observe $σ_{xx} \propto κ^{2/3}$ which is consistent with the theoretical result for the super-clean case, where the energy dissipation is due to the Landau-Zener…
In multiband systems, such as iron-based superconductors, the superconducting states with locking and anti-locking of the interband phase differences, are usually considered as mutually exclusive. For example, a dirty two-band system with interband impurity scattering undergoes a sharp crossover between the $s_{\pm}$ state (which favors phase anti locking) and the $s_{++}$ state (which favors phase locking). We discuss here that the situation can be much more complex in the presence of an external field or superconducting currents. In an external applied magnetic field, dirty two-band supercon…
A description of a dislocation-free elastic glass phase in terms of domain walls is developed and used as the basis of a renormalization group analysis of the energetics of dislocation loops added to the system. It is found that even after optimizing over possible paths of large dislocation loops, their energy is still very likely to be positive when the dislocation core energy is large. This implies the existence of an equilibrium elastic glass phase in three dimensional random field X-Y magnets, and a dislocation free, bond-orientationally ordered ``Bragg glass'' phase of vortices in dirty T…
The electronic structure of the giant vortex states in a mesoscopic superconducting disk is studied in a dirty limit using the Usadel approach. The local density of states profiles are shown to be strongly affected by the effect of quasiparticle (QP) tunneling between the states localized in the vortex core and the ones bound to the sample edge. Decreasing temperature leads to a crossover between the edge-dominated and core-dominated regimes in the magnetic field dependence of the tunneling conductance. This crossover is discussed in the context of the efficiency of quasiparticle cooling by th…
Disorder in two-band superconductors with repulsive interband interaction induces a frustrated competition between the phase-locking preferences of the various potential and kinetic terms. This frustrated interaction can result in the formation of an $s+is$ superconducting state, that breaks the time-reversal symmetry. In this paper we study the normal modes and their associated coherence lengths in such materials. We especially focus on the consequences of the soft modes stemming from the frustration and time-reversal-symmetry breakdown. We find that two-bands superconductors with such impuri…
We study the spatial distribution of supercurrent circulated around an Abrikosov vortex in an SF bilayer in perpendicular magnetic field. Within the dirty limit regime and circular cell approximation for the vortex lattice, we derive the conditions when the Usadel equations the F layer can be solved analytically. Using the obtained solutions, we demonstrate the possibility of reversal of direction of proximity induced supercurrents around the vortex in the F layer compared to that in the S-layer. The direction of currents can be controlled either by varying transparency of the SF interface or …
We study the relaxation dynamics of flux lines in dirty high-temperature superconductors using numerical simulations of a London-Langevin model of the interacting vortex lines. By analysing the equilibrium dynamics in the vortex liquid phase we find a dynamic crossover to a glassy non-equilibrium regime. We then focus on the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the vortex glass phase using tools that are common in the study of other glassy systems. By monitoring the two-times roughness and dynamic wandering we identify and characterize finite-size effects that are similar, though more complex, than …
We use the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity to calculate the response of the currents in the core of a vortex to an alternating electric field. We consider relatively clean superconductors with a mean free path larger than the coherence length (but still not in the 'superclean limit'). The current response of the core is dominated by the bound states of Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon, and differs significantly from the response obtained from the model of a ``normal core'' introduced by Bardeen and Stephen. The model of Bardeen and Stephen describes the limit of a dirty core and fails…
The structure of a superconducting vortex has been studied theoretically for a dirty antiferromagnetic superconductor (AFSC), modelling an AFSC as a doped semi-metal with s-wave superconducting pairing and antiferromagnetic (dielectric) interaction between electrons (holes). It is also supposed that the quasiparticles dispersion law possesses the property of nesting. The distribution of the superconducting and magnetic order parameters near the vortex core is calculated. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic order, been suppressed at large distances, is restored around the superconducting flu…
Disordered noninteracting quasiparticles that are governed by a Majorana-type Hamiltonian -- prominent examples are dirty superconductors with broken time-reversal and spin-rotation symmetry, or the fermionic representation of the 2d Ising model with fluctuating bond strengths -- are called class D. In two dimensions, weakly disordered systems of this kind may possess a metallic phase beyond the insulating phases expected for strong disorder. We show that the 2d metal phase emanates from the free Majorana fermion point, in the direction of the RG trajectory of a perturbed WZW model. To establi…
We investigate the electronic properties of type-II superconducting Nb(110) in an external magnetic field. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals a complex vortex shape which develops from circular via coffee bean-shaped to elliptical when decreasing the energy from the edge of the superconducting gap to the Fermi level. This anisotropy is traced back to the local density of states of Caroli-de-Gennes-Matricon states which exhibits a direction-dependent splitting. Oxidizing the Nb(110) surface triggers the transition from the clean to the dirty limit, quenches the vortex bound states, and lea…
We investigate the magnetic field distribution inside a Type II superconductor which has point group symmetry $O$ such as Li$_2$Pt$_3$B. The absence of inversion symmetry as a departure from perfect cubic group $O_h$ causes a magnetization collinear with the phase gradient associated with the order parameter, and a component of current collinear with the local magnetic field. In the vortex state, we predict, by solving the Maxwell equation, a local magnetic field transverse to the vortex lines. The probability distribution of this transverse field is also obtained for the prospective muon-spin…
Incommensurate easy flow channels in an otherwise perfect vortex lattice are investigated. The associated (point) defects in the lattice inside the channel cause an almost vanishing critical current, as shown by molecular dynamics simulations and a comparison with the Frenkel-Kontorova model. In addition to the normal flux flow behavior we find a low mobility regime at small drives associated with defect motion. We treat this situation analytically for the case of a single defective vortex row. We also briefly discuss the relation to existing experiments on artificial vortex channels.
We carry out numerical simulations to investigate spontaneous vortex formation during a temperature quench of a superconductor film from the normal to the superconducting phase in the absence of an external magnetic field. Our results agree roughly with quantitative predictions of the flux trapping scenario: In fast quenches the agreement is almost perfect, but there appears to be some discrepancy in slower ones. In particular, our simulations demonstrate the crucial role the electromagnetic field plays in this phenomenon, making it very different from vortex formation in superfluids. Besides …
We predict the existence of a quantum vortex for an unusual situation. We study the order parameter in doubly connected superconducting samples embedded in a uniform magnetic field. For samples with perfect cylindrical symmetry, the order parameter has been known for long and no vortices are present in the linear regime. However, if the sample is not symmetric, there exist ranges of the field for which the order parameter vanishes along a line, parallel to the field. In many respects, the behavior of this line is qualitatively different from that of the vortices encountered in type II supercon…
