A typo in Eq. (3.9) has been corrected. An additional subsection (5.2) has been inserted to demonstrate the nonrenormalizability of the relevant theta parameter in the presence of massive fermions, which implies that the continuum (a -> 0) limit must be taken keeping theta fixed
We review results concerning the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories and QCD, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we discuss theta dependence in the large-N limit.
Most results have been obtained within the lattice formulation of the theory via numerical simulations, which allow to investigate the theta dependence of the ground-state energy and the spectrum around theta=0 by determining the moments of the topological charge distribution, and their correlations with other observables. We discuss the various methods which have been employed to determine the topological susceptibility, and higher-order terms of the theta expansion. We review results at zero and finite temperature. We show that the results support the scenario obtained by general large-N scaling arguments, and in particular the Witten-Veneziano mechanism to explain the U(1)_A problem. We also compare with results obtained by other approaches, especially in the large-N limit, where the issue has been also addressed using, for example, the AdS/CFT correspondence.
We discuss issues related to theta dependence in full QCD: the neutron electric dipole moment, the dependence of the topological susceptibility on the quark masses, the U(1)_A symmetry breaking at finite temperature.
We also consider the 2D CP(N) model, which is an interesting theoretical laboratory to study issues related to topology. We review analytical results in the large-N limit, and numerical results within its lattice formulation.
Finally, we discuss the main features of the two-point correlation function of the topological charge density.
We determine the theta dependence of the deconfinement temperature of SU(3) pure gauge theory, finding that it decreases in presence of a topological theta term. We do that by performing lattice simulations at imaginary theta, then exploiting analytic continuation. We also give an estimate of such dependence in the limit of a large number of colors N, and compare it with our numerical results.
We study the phase diagram of non-Abelian pure gauge theories in the presence of a topological theta term. The dependence of the deconfinement temperature on theta is determined on the lattice both by analytic continuation and by reweighting, obtaining consistent results. The general structure of the diagram is discussed on the basis of large-N considerations and of the possible analogies and dualities existing with the phase diagram of QCD in presence of an imaginary baryon chemical potential.
Recently, it has been conjectured that deconfining phase transition in SU(N_c) pure Yang-Mills theories is continuously connected to a quantum phase transition in softly broken N=1 super Yang-Mills on R^{1,2}*S^1. We exploit this conjecture to study the strength of the transition and deconfining temperature as a function of the vacuum angle theta in pure Yang-Mills. We find that the transition temperature is a decreasing function of theta in [0, π), in an excellent agreement with recent lattice simulations. We also predict that the transition becomes stronger for the same range of theta, and c…
We investigate the dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature and, in particular, across the deconfinement transition. For this purpose, we exploit the lattice formulation of the theory and present numerical results for the expansion of the free energy up to O(theta^6), for N=3 and N=6. Our numerical analysis shows that the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theory experiences a drastic change across the deconfinement transition: the low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while …
We study the scaling behavior of the 4D SU(3) lattice gauge theory in the presence of a theta term, by Monte Carlo simulations computing the topological properties at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide a good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).
We report a study of the dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature, and in particular in the large-N limit. We show that the theta dependence drastically changes across the deconfinement transition. The low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while in the high-temperature phase the free energy is essentially determined by the dilute instanton-gas approximation, with a simple theta dependence of the free-energy density proportional to 1-Cos(theta).
We study the theta dependence of the spectrum of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the topological term in the Lagrangian, for N>=3 and in the large-N limit. We compute the O(theta^2) terms of the expansions around theta=0 of the string tension and the lowest glueball mass, respectively sigma(theta) = sigma (1 + s_2 theta^2 + ...) and M(theta) = M (1 + g_2 theta^2 + ...), where sigma and M are the values at theta=0. For this purpose we use numerical simulations of the Wilson lattice formulation of SU(N) gauge theories for N=3,4,6. The O(theta^2) coefficie…
We study the theta dependence of the spectrum of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the topological term in the Lagrangian, for N>=3 and in the large-N limit. We study the dependence of the free energy on the CP violating angle theta, in four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories with N >= 3, and in the large-N limit. Using the Wilson lattice formulation for numerical simulations, we compute the first few terms of the expansion of the ground-state energy F(theta) around theta = 0, F(theta) - F(0) = A_2 theta^2 (1 + b_2 theta^2 + ...). Our results support Witten's conjecture: F(theta) - F(0) = A theta^2 + O(1/N) for theta < pi. We verify that the topological susceptibility has a nonzero large-N limit chi_infinity = 2A with corrections of O(1/N^2), in subs…
We argue that gauge transformations with arbitrary fractional winding numbers should be allowed in a non-Abelian gauge theory. This eliminates the topological distinction between large and small gauge transformations. We prove that the states which satisfy the Gauss's law constraint are strictly invariant under gauge transformations, i.e. no phase shift occurs. In other words, the vacuum theta-angle is zero. Our observation does not resolve the strong CP problem.
We present recent results on the theta-dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we study the scaling behavior of these theories, by Monte Carlo simulations at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).
A toy model is proposed for four dimensional non-abelian gauge theories coupled to a large number of fermionic degrees of freedom. As the number of flavors is varied the gauge theory may be confining, walking or conformal. The toy model mimicking this feature is the two dimensional O(3) sigma model with a theta-term. For all theta the model is asymptotically free. For small theta the model is confining in the infra red, for theta = pi the model has a non-trivial infra red fixed point and consequently for theta slightly below pi the coupling walks. The first step in investigating the notoriousl…
Under very general assumptions we show that Vafa-Witten theorem on vector symmetries in vector-like theories can be extended to some physically relevant gauge theories with non-positive definite integration measure as QCD with a theta-vacuum term.
The theta dependent of pure gauge theories in four dimensions can be studied using a duality of large N gauge theories with string theory on a certain spacetime. Via this duality, one can argue that for every theta, there are infinitely many vacua that are stable in the large N limit. The true vacuum, found by minimizing the energy in this family, is a smooth function of theta except at theta equal to pi, where it jumps. This jump is associated with spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry. Domain walls separating adjacent vacua are described in terms of wrapped sixbranes.
In this article we expound a discovery of the quantum equivalence/duality of U(N) noncommutative quantum field theories (NC QFT) related by the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten (SW) maps and at all orders in the perturbation theory with respect to the coupling constant. We show that this proof holds for Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories with N=0,1,2,4$ supersymmetry. In short, Seiberg-Witten map does commute with the quantization of the U(N) NCQFT independently, with or without supersymmetry.
A recent proposal for 6d "gauge" theories with rational theta angle is discussed. These theories were constructed from n_C coinciding (p,q) 5-branes of IIB in the limit of vanishing string constant. They have (1,1) supersymmetry and the low energy theory is 6d Yang-Mills with gauge group SU(n_C) and a rational theta angle theta_6/(2 pi)=f/q, where fp=1 (mod q). By changing the point of view, considering the (p,q) 5-branes to be D5-branes, the 6d theta angle is identified with a 10d theta angle. This point of view together with some assumptions suggests a generalization of the previous limit to…
We report on a precise computation of the topological charge distribution in the SU(3) Yang--Mills theory. It is carried out on the lattice with high statistics Monte Carlo simulations by employing the definition of the topological charge suggested by Neuberger's fermions. We observe significant deviations from a Gaussian distribution. Our results disfavour the theta behaviour of the vacuum energy predicted by instanton models, while they are compatible with the expectation from the large Nc expansion.
Using the twisted partition function on R^3 x S^1, we argue that the deconfinement phase transition in pure Yang-Mills theory for all simple gauge groups is continuously connected to a quantum phase transition that can be studied in a controlled way. We explicitly consider two classes of theories, gauge theories with a center symmetry, such as SU(N_c) gauge theory for arbitrary N_c, and theories without a center symmetry, such as G_2 gauge theory. The mechanism governing the phase transition is universal and valid for all simple groups. The perturbative one-loop potential as well as monopole-i…
We study two-dimensional U($N$) and SU($N$) gauge theories with a topological term on arbitrary surfaces. Starting from a lattice formulation we derive the continuum limit of the action which turns out to be a generalisation of the heat kernel in the presence of a topological term. In the continuum limit we can reconstruct the topological information encoded in the theta term. In the topologically trivial cases the theta term gives only a trivial shift to the ground state energy but in the topologically nontrivial ones it remains to be coupled to the dynamics in the continuum. In particular fo…
It is well-known that non-commutative (NC) field theories at theta = infinity are ``equivalent'' to large N matrix field theories to all orders in perturbation theory, due to the dominance of planar diagrams. By formulating a NC field theory on the lattice non-perturbatively and mapping it onto a twisted reduced model, we point out that the above equivalence does not hold if the translational symmetry of the NC field theory is broken spontaneously. As an example we discuss NC scalar field theory, where such a spontaneous symmetry breakdown has been confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.
In some recent papers it is claimed that the physical significance of the vacuum angle theta for QCD-like theories depends on the chosen gauge condition. We criticise the arguments that were given in support of this claim, and show by explicit construction for the case of QED$_2$ that and why they fail, confirming thereby the commonly accepted point of view.
The Coulomb gauge in QCD is the only explicitly unitary gauge. But it suffers from energy-divergences which means that it is not rigorously well-defined. One way to define it unambiguously is as the limit of a gauge interpolating between the Feynman gauge and the Coulomb gauge. This interpolating gauge is characterized by a parameter theta and the Coulomb gauge is obtained in the limit theta tends to 0. We study the renormalization of this theta-gauge for all values of theta. Novel features include field mixing as well as scaling, the renormalization of the theta parameter itself, and the appe…
We review recent results on the theta dependence of the ground-state energy and spectrum of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term F-Fdual in the Lagrangian. In particular, we discuss the results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations of the lattice formulation of QCD, which allow the investigation of theta dependence around theta=0 by determining the moments of the topological charge distribution, and their correlations with other observables. The results for N=3 and larger values of N support the scenario obtained by general la…
The Coulomb gauge in QCD is the only explicitly unitary gauge. But it suffers from energy-divergences which means that it is not rigorously well-defined. One way to define it unambiguously is as the limit of a gauge interpolating between the Landau gauge and the Coulomb gauge. This interpolating gauge is characterised by a parameter theta and the Coulomb gauge is obtained in the limit theta tends to zero. We study the renormalization of this theta-gauge for all values of theta, and note some special features of it.
We describe paths in the configuration space of (3+1) dimensional QED whose relative quantum phase (or relative phase in the functional integral) depends on the value of the theta angle. The final configurations on the two paths are related by a gauge transformation but differ in magnetic helicity or Chern-Simons number. Such configurations must exhibit gauge potentials that fall off no faster than 1/r in some region of finite solid angle, although they need not have net magnetic charge (i.e., are not magnetic monopoles). The relative phase is proportional to theta times the difference in Cher…
Relationships between gauge, conformal and discrete symmetries in particle physics are analysed. We study also the effect of the electroweak mixing on the cancellation of SU(2) anomalous actions. It is shown that the relation theta_{W} = 2(theta_{12}+theta_{23}+theta_{13}) between the Weinberg angle and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angles should be satisfied and this effect is completely defined by the mixing of Dirac fermions. We compare two mechanisms of the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry, discuss the renormalizability of theories, and argue for the existence of the Majorana fermion…
We discuss the bosonized Schwinger model in light-cone quantization, using discretization as an infrared regulator. We consider both the light-cone Coulomb gauge, in which all gauge freedom can be removed and a physical Hilbert space employed, and the light-cone Weyl (temporal) gauge, in which the Hilbert space is unphysical and a Gauss law operator is used to select a physical subspace. We describe the different ways in which the theta vacuum is manifested depending on this choice of gauge, and compute the theta-dependence of the chiral condensate in each case.
In a Euclidean path integral formulation of gauge theory and quantum mechanics, the theta-term induces a sign problem, and relatedly, a complex phase for the fugacity of topological defects; whereas in Minkowskian formulation, it induces a topological (geometric) phase multiplying ordinary path-amplitudes. In an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory which admits a semi-classical limit, we show that the complex fugacity generates interference between Euclidean path histories, i.e., monopole-instanton events, and radically alters the vacuum structure. At theta=0, a mass gap is due to the monopole-instanton pl…
Gauge theories in various dimensions often admit discrete theta angles, that arise from gauging a global symmetry with an additional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. We discuss how the global symmetry and 't Hooft anomaly depends on the discrete theta angles by coupling the gauge theory to a topological quantum field theory (TQFT). We observe that gauging an Abelian subgroup symmetry, that participates in symmetry extension, with an additional SPT phase leads to a new theory with an emergent Abelian symmetry that also participates in a symmetry extension. The symmetry extension of t…
We study wo distinct theta-exact Seiberg-Witten (SW) map expansions, (I) and (II) respectively, up to the e3 order for the gauge parameter, gauge field and the gauge field strengths of the noncommutative U*(1) gauge theory on the Moyal space. We derive explicitly the closed form expression for the SW map ambiguity between the two and observe the emergence of several new totally commutative generalized star products. We also identify the additional gauge freedoms within each of the e3 order field strength expansions and define corresponding sets of deformation/ratio/weight parameters, (kappa,ka…
The equivalence of the noncommutative U(N) quantum field theories related by the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten maps is in this letter proven to all orders in the perturbation theory with respect to the coupling constant. We show that this duality holds for Super Yang-Mills theories with N=0,1,2,4 supersymmetry. A direct check of this equivalence relation is performed by computing the one-loop quantum corrections to the quadratic part of the effective action in the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory with N=0,1,2,4 supersymmetry.
We study a topological field theory describing confining phases of gauge theories in four dimensions. It can be formulated on a lattice using a discrete 2-form field talking values in a finite abelian group (the magnetic gauge group). We show that possible theta-angles in such a theory are quantized and labeled by quadratic functions on the magnetic gauge group. When the theta-angles vanish, the theory is dual to an ordinary topological gauge theory, but in general it is not isomorphic to it. We also explain how to couple a lattice Yang-Mills theory to a TQFT of this kind so that the 't Hooft …
We discuss the perturbative expansion of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories defined on a d-dimensional torus of linear size l with twisted boundary conditions, generalizing previous results in the literature. For a specific class of twist tensors depending on a single integer flux value k, we show that perturbative results to all orders depend on the combination lN^(2/d) and a flux-dependent angle theta. This implies a new kind of volume independence that holds at finite N and for fixed values of theta. Our results also provide interesting information about the possible occurrence of tachyonic instabil…
The solution of the axial U(1) problem, the role of the topology of the gauge group in forcing the breaking of axial symmetry in any irreducible representation of the observable algebra and the theta vacua structure are revisited in the temporal gauge with attention to the mathematical consistency of the derivations. Both realizations with strong and weak Gauss law are discussed; the control of the general mechanisms and structures is obtained on the basis of the localization of the (large) gauge transformations and the local generation of the chiral symmetry. The Schwinger model in the tempor…
In this note we study IR limits of pure two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with semisimple non-simply-connected gauge groups including SU(k)/Z_k, SO(2k)/Z_2, Sp(2k)/Z_2, E_6/Z_3, and E_7/Z_2 for various discrete theta angles, both directly in the gauge theory and also in nonabelian mirrors, extending a classification begun in previous work. We find in each case that there are supersymmetric vacua for precisely one value of the discrete theta angle, and no supersymmetric vacua for other values, hence supersymmetry is broken in the IR for most discrete theta angles. Furthermore, for t…
In this short note we suggest that the singular behavior of large gauge transformations preserving the vacuum at null infinity in Yang-Mills theory implies monopoles into the bulk, as well as that the inclusion of a theta term induces a decoupling between holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents associated to those large gauge transformations
We consider noncommutative GUT inspired field theories formulated within the enveloping-algebra formalism for anomaly safe compact simple gauge groups. Our theories have only gauge fields and fermions, and we compute the UV divergent part of the one-loop background-field effective action involving two fermionic fields at first order in the noncommutativity parameter theta. We show that, if the second-degree Casimir has the same value for all the irreps furnished by the fermionic multiplets of the model, then, that UV divergent part can be renormalised by carrying out multiplicative renormalisa…
We apply the complex Langevin method (CLM) to overcome the sign problem in 4D SU(2) gauge theory with a theta term extending our previous work on the 2D U(1) case. The topology freezing problem can be solved by using open boundary conditions in all spatial directions, and the criterion for justifying the CLM is satisfied even for large $θ$ as far as the lattice spacing is sufficiently small. However, we find that the CP symmetry at $θ=π$ remains to be broken explicitly even in the continuum and infinite-volume limits due to the chosen boundary conditions. In particular, this prevents us from i…
In formulating gauge field theories on noncommutative (NC) spaces it is suggested that particles carrying gauge invariant quantities should not be viewed as pointlike, but rather as extended objects whose sizes grow linearly with their momenta. This and other generic properties deriving from the nonlocal character of interactions (showing thus unambiguously their quantum-gravity origin) lead to a specific form of UV/IR mixing as well as to a pathological behavior at the quantum level when the noncommutativity parameter theta is set to be arbitrarily small. In spite of previous suggestions that…
We study the $θ$ dependence of four-dimensional SU($N$) gauge theories, for $N\geq 3$ and in the large-N limit. We use numerical simulations of the Wilson lattice formulation of gauge theories to compute the first few terms of the expansion of the ground-state energy $F(θ)$ around $θ=0$, $F(θ)-F(0) = A_2 θ^2 (1 + b_2 θ^2 + ...)$. Our results support Witten's conjecture: $F(θ)-F(0) = {\cal A} θ^2 + O(1/N)$ for sufficiently small values of $θ$, $θ< π$. Indeed we verify that the topological susceptibility has a nonzero large-N limit $χ_\infty=2 {\cal A}$ with corrections of $O(1/N^2)$, in substan…
We describe three previously unnoticed components of the moduli space of minimally supersymmetric string theories in $d\geq 7$, describing in some detail their spectrum and duality properties. We find a new component in nine and eight dimensions, and two additional ones in seven dimensions. These theories were originally discovered in a bottom-up classification of possible F/M-theory singularity freezing patterns in the K3 lattice, described in a companion paper. The 9d/8d component can be understood as F/M-theory on a twisted fibration of the Klein bottle over a circle, while the new seven-di…
5d Yang-Mills theory with an Sp(N) gauge group admits a discrete analog of the theta parameter. We describe the origin of this parameter in N=1 theories from Type I' string theory, and study its effect on the 5d superconformal fixed point theories with an Sp(1)=SU(2) gauge group by computing the superconformal index. Our result confirms the lack of global symmetry enhancement in the so-called \tilde{E}_1 theory.
The dependence on the topological theta angle term in quantum field theory is usually discussed in the context of instanton calculus. There the observables are 2 pi periodic, analytic functions of theta. However, in strongly coupled theories, the semi-classical instanton approximation can break down due to infrared divergences. Instances are indeed known where analyticity in theta can be lost, while the 2 pi periodicity is preserved. In this short note we exhibit a simple two dimensional example where the 2 pi periodicity is lost. The observables remain periodic under the transformation theta …

I recall the main motivation to study quantum field theories on noncommutative spaces and comment on the most-studied example, the noncommutative R^4. That algebra is given by the *-product which can be written in (at least) two ways: in an integral form or an exponential form. These two forms of the *-product are adapted to different classes of functions, which, when using them to formulate field theory, lead to two versions of quantum field theories on noncommutative R^4. The integral form requires functions of rapid decay and a (preferably smooth) cut-off in the path integral, which therefo…
We investigate field theories on the non-commutative torus upon varying theta, the parameter of non-commutativity. We argue that one should think of Morita equivalence as a symmetry of algebras describing the same space rather than of theories living on different spaces (as is T-duality). Then we give arguments why physical observables depend on theta non-continuously.
We consider invariance of the action of N=1 supersymmetric theories under the change of sign of the fermionic co-ordinate in superspace. We show that the R-parity can be realized as a special implementation of this symmetry. Other implementations in the supersymmetric extension of the standard model can be related to lepton number and baryon number parities.
The Hamiltonian reduction of classical SU(2) Yang-Mills field theory to the equivalent unconstrained theory of gauge invariant local dynamical variables is generalized to the case of nonvanishing theta angle. It is shown that for any theta angle the elimination of the pure gauge degrees of freedom leads to a corresponding unconstrained nonlocal theory of self-interacting second rank symmetric tensor fields, and that the obtained classical unconstrained gluodynamics with different theta angles are canonically equivalent as on the original constrained level.
We revisit the issue of the vacuum angle theta dependence in weakly coupled (Higgsed) Yang-Mills theories. Two most popular mechanisms for eliminating physical theta dependence are massless quarks and axions. Anselm and Johansen noted that the vacuum angle theta(EW), associated with the electroweak SU(2) in the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model, is unobservable although all fermion fields obtain masses through Higgsing and there is no axion. We generalize this idea to a broad class of Higgsed Yang-Mills theories. In the second part we consider consequences of Grand Unification. We start from a unif…
We consider Dirac monopoles embedded into SU(N) gauge theory with theta-term for $θ= 4πM $ (where $M$ is half-integer for $N = 2$ and is integer for $N>2$). Due to the theta - term those monopoles obtain the SU(N) charge and become the dyons. They belong to different irreducible representations of SU(N) (but not to all of them). The admitted representations are enumerated. Their minimal rank increases with increasing of $N$. The main result of the paper is the representation of the partition function of SU(N) model with theta-term (that contains singular gauge fields correspondent to the menti…
Quantum field theory on non-commutative spaces does not enjoy the usual ultraviolet-infrared decoupling that forms the basis for conventional renormalization. The high momentum contributions to loop integrations can lead to unfamiliar long distance behavior which can potentially undermine naive expectations for the IR behavior of the theory. These "anomalies" involve non-analytic behavior in the noncommutativity parameter Theta making the limit Theta goes to zero singular. In this paper we will analyze such effects in the one loop approximation to gauge theories on non-commutative space. We wi…
We show that in the perturbative regime defined by the coupling constant, the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten map applied to noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills --with or without Supersymmetry-- gives an ordinary gauge theory which is, at the quantum level, dual to the former. We do so by using the on-shell DeWitt effective action and dimensional regularization. We explicitly compute the one-loop two-point function contribution to the on-shell DeWitt effective action of the ordinary U(1) theory furnished by the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten map. We find that the non-local UV divergences found in the propag…
The theta-dependent gauge theories can be studied by using holographic duality through string theory on certain spacetimes. Via this correspondence we consider a stack of $N_{0}$ dynamical D0-branes as D-instantons in the background sourced by $N_{c}$ coincident non-extreme black D4-branes. According to the gauge-gravity duality this D0-D4 brane system corresponds to Yang-Mills theory with a theta angle at finite temperature. We solve the IIA supergravity action by taking account into a sufficiently small backreaction of the D-instantons and obtain an analytical solution for our D0-D4-brane co…
The most popular noncommutative field theories are characterized by a matrix parameter theta^(mu,nu) that violates Lorentz invariance. We consider the simplest algebra in which the theta-parameter is promoted to an operator and Lorentz invariance is preserved. This algebra arises through the contraction of a larger one for which explicit representations are already known. We formulate a star product and construct the gauge-invariant Lagrangian for Lorentz-conserving noncommutative QED. Three-photon vertices are absent in the theory, while a four-photon coupling exists and leads to a distinctiv…
QCD and related gauge theories have a sign problem when a $θ$-term is included; this complicates the extraction of physical information from Euclidean space calculations as one would do in lattice studies. The sign problem arises in this system because the partition function for configurations with fixed topological charge $Q$, $\mathcal{Z}_Q$, are summed weighted by $\exp(i Q θ)$ to obtain the partition function for fixed $θ$, $ \mathcal{Z}(θ)$. The sign problem gets exponentially worse numerically as the space-time volume is increased. Here it is shown that apart from the practical numerical…
Quantum field theories and Matrix models have a far richer solution set than is normally considered, due to the many boundary conditions which must be set to specify a solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. The complete set of solutions of these equations is obtained by generalizing the path integral to include sums over various inequivalent contours of integration in the complex plane. We discuss the importance of these exotic solutions. While naively the complex contours seem perverse, they are relevant to the study of theta vacua and critical phenomena. Furthermore, it can be shown that…
We define a squashed four-sphere by a dimensional reduction of a twisted S^4 x S^1, and construct explicitly a supersymmetric Yang-Mills action on it. The action includes a non-trivial dilaton factor and a theta term with a non-constant theta. The partition function of this theory is calculated using the localization technique. The resulting partition function can be written in the form consistent with the AGT relation due to the non-constant theta term. The parameter b which characterizes the partition function in this form is not restricted to be real for the squashed four-sphere.
We propose quantum states for Little String Theories (LSTs) arising from M5 branes probing A- and D-type singularities. This extends Witten's picture of M5 brane partition functions as theta functions to this more general setup. Compactifying the world-volume of the five-branes on a two-torus, we find that the corresponding theta functions are sections of line bundles over complex 4-tori. This formalism allows us to derive Seiberg-Witten curves for the resulting four-dimensional theories. Along the way, we prove a duality for LSTs observed by Iqbal, Hohenegger and Rey.
