Discrete simulation methods are efficient tools to investigate the complex behaviors of complex fluids made of either dry granular materials or dilute suspensions. By contrast, materials made of soft and/or concentrated units (emulsions, foams, vesicles, dense suspensions) can exhibit both significant elastic particle deflections (Hertz-like response) and strong viscous forces (squeezed liquid). We point out that the gap between two particles is then not determined solely by the positions of their centers, but rather exhibits its own dynamics. We provide a new discrete numerical method, named Soft Dynamics, to simulate the combined dynamics of particles and contacts. As an illustration, we present the results for the approach of two particles. We recover the scaling behaviors expected in three limits: the Stokes limit for very large gaps, the Poiseuille-lubricated limit for small gaps and even smaller surface deflections, and the Hertz limit for significant surface deflections. Larger scale simulations with this new method are a promising tool for investigating the collective behaviors of many complex materials.
The swimming of a deformable planar slab in a viscous incompressible fluid is studied on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations. A continuum of plane wave displacements, symmetric on both sides of the slab and characterized by a polarization angle, allows optimization of the swimming efficiency with respect to polarization. The mean swimming velocity and mean rate of dissipation are calculated to second order in the amplitude of the stroke. The optimum efficiency depends on the ratio of viscosity and mass density of the fluid. For high viscosity a stroke is found with significantly higher ef…
The swimming of a deformable uniform sphere is studied in second order perturbation theory in the amplitude of the stroke. The effect of the first order reaction force on the first order center of mass velocity is calculated in linear response theory by use of Newton's equation of motion. The response is characterized by a dipolar admittance, which is shown to be proportional to the translational admittance. As a consequence the mean swimming velocity, calculated in second order perturbation theory, depends on the added mass of the sphere. The mean swimming velocity and the mean rate of dissip…
The axisymmetric deformation and motion of interacting droplets in an imposed temperature gradient is considered using boundary-integral techniques for slow viscous motion. Results showing temporal drop motion, deformations and separation are presented for equal-viscosity fluids. The focus is on cases when the drops are of equal radii or when the smaller drop trails behind the larger drop. For equal-size drops, our analysis shows that the motion of a leading drop is retarded while the motion of the trailing one is enchanced compared to the undeformable case. The distance between the centers of…
Deformable elastic bodies in viscous and viscoelastic media constitute a large portion of synthetic and biological complex fluids. We present a parallelized 3D-simulation methodology which fully resolves the momentum balance in the solid and fluid domains. An immersed boundary algorithm is exploited known as the immersed finite element method (IFEM) which accurately determines the internal forces in the solid domain. The scheme utilized has the advantages of requiring no costly re-meshing, handling finite Reynold's number, as well as incorporating non-linear viscoelasticity in the fluid domain…

Experimental observations indicate that chemically active droplets suspended in a surfactant-laden fluid can self-propel spontaneously. The onset of this motion is attributed to a symmetry-breaking Marangoni instability resulting from the nonlinear advective coupling of the distribution of surfactant to the hydrodynamic flow generated by Marangoni stresses at the droplet's surface. Here, we use weakly nonlinear analysis to characterize the self-propulsion near the instability threshold and the influence of the droplet's deformability. We report that in vicinity of the threshold, deformability …
Reciprocal movement cannot be used for locomotion at low-Reynolds number in an infinite fluid or near a rigid surface. Here we show that this limitation is relaxed for a body performing reciprocal motions near a deformable interface. Using physical arguments and scaling relationships, we show that the nonlinearities arising from reciprocal flow-induced interfacial deformation rectify the periodic motion of the swimmer, leading to locomotion. Such a strategy can be used to move toward, away from, and parallel to any deformable interface as long as the length scales involved are smaller than int…
Young's law fails on soft solid and liquid substrates where there are substantial deformations near the contact line. On liquid substrates, this is captured by Neumann's classic analysis, which provides a geometrical construction for minimising the interfacial free energy. On soft solids, the total free energy includes an additional contribution from elasticity. A linear-elastic model incorporating an out-of-plane restoring force due to solid surface tension was recently shown to accurately predict the equilibrium shape of a thin elastic film due to a large sessile droplet. Here, we extend thi…
We analyze a suspension of deformable particles in a pressure-driven flow. The suspension is composed of neutrally buoyant initially spherical particles and a Newtonian carrier fluid, and the flow is solved by means of direct numerical simulations, using a fully Eulerian method based on a one-continuum formulation. The solid phase is modeled with an incompressible viscous hyperelastic constitutive relation, and the flow is characterized by three main dimensionless parameters, namely the solid volume fraction, the Reynolds and capillary numbers. The dependency of the effective viscosity on thes…
Despite its significance in microfluidics, the effect of confinement on the transition from the tank-treading (steady motion) to the tumbling (unsteady motion) dynamical state of deformable micro-particles has not been studied in detail. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of a single viscous vesicle under confining shear as a general model system for red blood cells, capsules, or viscous droplets. The transition from tank-treading to tumbling motion can be triggered by the ratio between internal and external fluid viscosities. Here, we show that the transition can be induced solely by …
We perform fully Eulerian numerical simulations of an initially spherical hyperelastic particle suspended in a Newtonian pressure-driven flow in a cylindrical straight pipe. We study the full particle migration and deformation for different Reynolds numbers and for various levels of particle elasticity, to disentangle the interplay of inertia and elasticity on the particle focusing. We observe that the particle deforms and undergoes a lateral displacement while traveling downstream through the pipe, finally focusing at the pipe centerline. We note that the migration dynamics and the final equi…
We study the coupled hydrodynamics between a motile slender microswimmer and a deformable interface that separates two Newtonian fluid regions. From the disturbance field generated by the swimming motion, we quantitatively characterize the interface deformation and the manner in which the coupling modifies the microswimmer translation itself. We treat the role of the swimmer type (pushers and pullers), size and model an interface that can deform due to both surface tension and bending elasticity. Our analysis reveals a strong dependence of the hydrodynamics on the swimmer orientation and posit…
The research fields of microfluidics and soft robotics both involve complex small-scale internal channel networks, embedded within a solid structure. This work examines leveraging viscous peeling as a mechanism to create and activate soft actuators and microchannel networks, including complex elements such as valves, without the need for fabrication of structures with micron-scale internal cavities. We consider configurations composed of an internal slender structure embedded within another elastic solid. Pressurized viscous fluid is introduced into the interface between the two solids, thus p…
We derive and study a new hyperbolic two-phase model of a porous deformable medium saturated by a viscous fluid. The governing equations of the model are derived in the framework of Symmetric Hyperbolic Thermodynamically Compatible (SHTC) systems and by generalizing the unified hyperbolic model of continuum fluid and solid mechanics. Similarly to the unified model, the presented model takes into account the viscosity of the saturating fluid through a hyperbolic reformulation. The model accounts for such dissipative mechanisms as interfacial friction and viscous dissipation of the saturated flu…
Detailed understanding of the coupling between fluid flow and solid deformation in porous media is crucial for the development biomedical devices and novel energy technologies relating to a wide range of geological and biological processes. Well established models based on poroelasticity theory exist for describing coupled fluid-solid mechanics. However, these models are not adapted to describe systems with multiple fluid phases or 'hybrid-scale' systems containing both solid-free regions and porous matrices. To address this problem, we present a novel computational fluid dynamics approach bas…
We analyze experimentally the shape of a long elastic filament rotating in a viscous liquid. We identify a continuous but sharp transition from a straight to an helical shape, resulting from the competition between viscous stresses and elastic forces. This induced helicity generates a propulsive force along the axis of rotation. In addition, we show that the shape transition is associated with an unstable branch in the force-torque relation. A linearized model of the fluid-structure interaction is proposed to account for all the features of the non-linear filament dynamics.
A thin liquid film with non-zero curvature at its free surface spontaneously flows to reach a flat configuration, a process driven by Laplace pressure gradients and resisted by the liquid's viscosity. Inspired by recent progresses on the dynamics of liquid droplets on soft substrates, we here study the relaxation of a viscous film supported by an elastic foundation. Experiments involve thin polymer films on elastomeric substrates, where the dynamics of the liquid-air interface is monitored using atomic force microscopy. A theoretical model that describes the coupled evolution of the solid-liqu…
The non-linear interaction between air and a water droplet just prior to high-speed impingement on a surface is a phenomenon that has been researched extensively and occurs in a number of industrial settings. The role that surface deformation plays in an air cushioned impact of a liquid droplet is considered here. In a two-dimensional framework, assuming small density and viscosity ratios between the air and the liquid, a reduced system of integro-differential equations is derived governing the liquid droplet free-surface shape, the pressure in the thin air film and the deformation of the surf…
Dispersive shock waves and solitons are fundamental nonlinear excitations in dispersive media, but dispersive shock wave studies to date have been severely constrained. Here we report on a novel dispersive hydrodynamics testbed: the effectively frictionless dynamics of interfacial waves between two high contrast, miscible, low Reynolds' number Stokes fluids. This scenario is realized by injecting from below a lighter, viscous fluid into a column filled with high viscosity fluid. The injected fluid forms a deformable pipe whose diameter is proportional to the injection rate, enabling precise co…
The interaction of a thin viscous film with an elastic sheet results in coupling of pressure and deformation, which can be utilized as an actuation mechanism for surface deformations in a wide range of applications, including microfluidics, optics, and soft robotics. Implementation of such configurations inherently takes place over finite domains and often requires some pre-stretching of the sheet. Under the assumptions of strong pre-stretching and small deformations of the lubricated elastic sheet, we use the linearized Reynolds and Foppl-von Karman equations to derive closed-form analytical …
Viscous flows through configurations manufactured from soft materials apply both pressure and shear stress at the solid-liquid interface, leading to deformation of the cross-section, which affects the flow rate-pressure drop relation. Conventionally, calculating this flow rate-pressure drop relation requires solving the complete elastohydrodynamic problem, which couples the fluid flow and elastic deformation. In this work, we use the reciprocal theorems for Stokes flow and linear elasticity to derive a closed-form expression for the flow rate-pressure drop relation in deformable channels, bypa…
Elastic deformation due to embedded fluidic networks is currently studied in the context of soft-actuators and soft-robotic applications. In this work, we analyze interaction between the elastic deflection of a slender beam and viscous flow within a long serpentine channel, embedded in the elastic beam. The channel is positioned asymmetrically with regard to the midplane of the beam, and thus pressure within the channel creates a local moment deforming the beam. We focus on creeping flows and small deflections of the elastic beam and obtain, in leading order, a fourth-order partial integro-dif…
The buoyancy-driven dynamics of a pair of gas bubbles released in line is investigated numerically, focusing on highly inertial conditions under which isolated bubbles follow non-straight paths. In an early stage, the second bubble always drifts out of the wake of the leading one. Then, depending on the ratios of the buoyancy, viscous and capillary forces which define the Galilei ($Ga$) and Bond ($Bo$) numbers of the system, five distinct regimes specific to such conditions are identified, in which the two bubbles may rise independently or continue to interact and possibly collide in the end. …
The buoyancy-driven motion of two identical gas bubbles released in line in a liquid at rest is examined with the help of highly resolved simulations, focusing on moderately inertial regimes in which the path of an isolated bubble is vertical. Assuming first an axisymmetric evolution, equilibrium configurations of the bubble pair are determined as a function of the buoyancy-to-viscous and buoyancy-to-capillary force ratios which define the Galilei ($Ga$) and Bond ($Bo$) numbers of the system, respectively. The three-dimensional solutions reveal that this axisymmetric equilibrium is actually ne…
Microfluidic systems are usually fabricated with soft materials that deform due to the fluid stresses. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on the steady flow in shallow deformable microchannels have shown that the flow rate is a nonlinear function of the pressure drop due to the deformation of the upper soft wall. Here, we extend the steady theory of Christov et al. (2018) by considering the start-up flow from rest, both in pressure-controlled and in flow-rate-controlled configurations. The characteristic scales and relevant parameters governing the transient flow are first identified,…
Fluid-structure interactions are ubiquitous in nature and technology. However, the systems are often so complex that numerical simulations or ad hoc assumptions must be used to gain insight into the details of the complex interactions between the fluid and solid mechanics. In this paper, we present experiments and theory on viscous flow in a simple bioinspired soft valve which illustrate essential features of interactions between hydrodynamic and elastic forces at low Reynolds numbers. The setup comprises a sphere connected to a spring located inside a tapering cylindrical channel. The spring …
In vascular targeted therapies, blood-borne carriers should realize sustained drug release from the luminal side towards the diseased tissue. In this context, such carriers are required to firmly adhere to the vessel walls for a sufficient period of time while resisting force perturbations induced by the blood flow and circulating cells. Here, a hybrid computational model, combining a Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) and Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM), is proposed for predicting the strength of adhesion of particles in narrow capillaries (7.5 $μ\mathrm{m})$ traversed by blood cells. While flowing down…
