We derive and study a new hyperbolic two-phase model of a porous deformable medium saturated by a viscous fluid. The governing equations of the model are derived in the framework of Symmetric Hyperbolic Thermodynamically Compatible (SHTC) systems and by generalizing the unified hyperbolic model of continuum fluid and solid mechanics. Similarly to the unified model, the presented model takes into account the viscosity of the saturating fluid through a hyperbolic reformulation. The model accounts for such dissipative mechanisms as interfacial friction and viscous dissipation of the saturated fluid. Using the presented nonlinear finite-strain SHTC model, the governing equations for the propagation of small-amplitude waves in a porous medium saturated with a viscous fluid are derived. As in the conventional Biot theory of porous media, three types of waves can be found: fast and slow compression waves and shear waves. It turns out that the shear wave attenuates rapidly due to the viscosity of the saturating fluid, and this wave is difficult to see in typical test cases. However, some test cases are presented in which shear waves can be observed in the vicinity of interfaces between regions with different porosity.
A two-phase model and its application to wavefields numerical simulation are discussed in the context of modeling of compressible fluid flows in elastic porous media. The derivation of the model is based on a theory of thermodynamically compatible systems and on a model of nonlinear elastoplasticity combined with a two-phase compressible fluid flow model. The governing equations of the model include phase mass conservation laws, a total momentum conservation law, an equation for the relative velocities of the phases, an equation for mixture distortion, and a balance equation for porosity. They…

The coefficients of dispersion, D_{ij}, and the dispersivity, a_{ijkl}, appear in the expression for the flux of a solute in saturated flow through porous media. We present a detailed analysis of these tensors in an axially symmetric porous medium and show that in such a medium, the dispersivity is governed by 6 independent moduli. We present also the constraints that have to be satisfied by these moduli. We also show that at least two independent experiments are required in order to obtain the values of these coefficients for any three-dimensional porous medium domain.
Soil salinization is a major cause of soil degradation and hampers plant growth. For soils saturated with saline water, the evaporation of water induces accumulation of salt near the top of the soil. The remaining liquid gets an increasingly larger density due to the accumulation of salt, giving a gravitationally unstable situation, where instabilities in the form of fingers can form. These fingers can hence lead to a net downwards transport of salt. We here investigate the appearance of these fingers through a linear stability analysis and through numerical simulations. The linear stability a…
Zhu & Granick [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 096105 (2001)] have recently experimentally established existence of a boundary slip in a Newtonian liquid. They reported typical values of the slip length of the order of few micro-meters. In this light, the effect of introduction of the boundary slip into the theory of propagation of elastic waves in a fluid-saturated porous medium formulated by Biot is investigated. The new model should allow to fit the experimental seismic data in circumstances when Biot's theory fails, as the introduction of phenomenological dependence of the slip velocity upon frequenc…
We study non-isothermal diffusive transport of a weakly-soluble two-component substance in a liquid-saturated porous medium being in contact with the reservoir of this substance. Particular attention is given to the example case of infiltration of nitrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere under the annual temperature oscillation. The surface temperature of the porous medium half-space oscillates in time, which results in a decaying solubility wave propagating deep into the porous medium. In such a system, the zones of saturated solution and nondissolved phase coexist with the zones of undersatur…
We study the effect of surface temperature oscillations on diffusive transport of solutes of weaklysoluble substances through liquid-saturated porous media. Temperature wave induced by these oscillations and decaying deep in the porous massif creates the solubility wave along with the corresponding solute diffusion flux wave. When the non-dissolved fraction is immobilized in pores---for gases the bubbles can be immobilized by the surface tension force, for solids (e.g., limestone, gas-hydrates) the immobilization of non-dissolved phase is obvious---the only remaining mechanisms of mass transpo…
The equations of motion in a macroscopically inhomogeneous porous medium saturated by a fluid are derived. As a first verification of the validity of these equations, a two-layer rigid frame porous system considered as one single porous layer with a sudden change in physical properties is studied. A simple wave equation is derived and solved for this system. The reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated numerically using a wave splitting-Green's function approach (WS-GF). The reflected and transmitted wave time histories are also simulated. Experimental results obtained for mater…
The study investigates the problem of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) free convection over a non-isothermal axisymmetric body under the action of transverse magnetic field. The body is embedded in a porous medium saturated with electrically conducting non-Newtonian power law fluid. In order to obtain similarity solution, it is assumed that the viscosity of the fluid decays exponentially with temperature. The qualitative results are illustrated for a vertical flat plate, horizontal cylinder and sphere.
Fully developed forced convective flow in a channel filled with porous material bounded by two impermeable walls subject to constant heat flux is considered. We consider Brinkman-Forchhimer equation to govern the flow inside the porous medium which accounts for the presence of inertial term. We assume that the porous medium is anisotropic in nature and permeability is varying along all the directions, correspondingly, permeability will be a matrix which appear as a positive semi-definite matrix in the momentum equation. The anisotropic nature of the porous medium is characterized by anisotropi…
A phase transition model for porous media in consolidation is studied. The model is able to describe the phenomenon of fluid-segregation during the consolidation process, i.e., the coexistence of two phases differing from fluid content inside the porous medium under static load. Considering pure Darcy dissipation, the dynamics is described by a Cahn-Hilliard-like system of partial differential equations (PDE). The goal, here, is to study the dynamics of the formation of stationary fluid-rich bubbles. The evolution of the strain and fluid density profiles of the porous medium is analyzed in two…
Reactive transport in saturated/unsaturated porous media is numerically upscaled to the space-time scale of a hypothetical measurement through coarse-grained space-time (CGST) averages. The reactive transport is modeled at the fine-grained Darcy scale by the actual number of molecules involved in reactions which undergo advective and diffusive movements described by global random walk (GRW) simulations. The CGST averages verify identities similar to a local balance equation which allow us to derive expressions for the flow velocity and the intrinsic diffusion coefficient in terms of averaged m…
Double-diffusive convection in porous media is a common phenomenon in nature, and has received considerable attention in a wide variety of engineering applications. In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating double-diffusive convection in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The MRT-LB model is constructed in the framework of the triple-distribution-function approach: the velocity field, the temperature and concentration fields are solved separately by three different MRT-LB equations. The present model has tw…
We consider the propagation of nonlinear plane waves in porous media within the framework of the Biot-Coussy biphasic mixture theory. The tortuosity effect is included in the model, and both constituents are assumed incompressible (Yeoh-type elastic skeleton, and saturating fluid). In this case, the linear dispersive waves governed by Biot's theory are either of compression or shear-wave type, and nonlinear waves can be classified in a similar way. In the special case of a neo-Hookean skeleton, we derive the explicit expressions for the characteristic wave speeds, leading to the hyperbolicity …
We consider a saturated porous medium in the regime of solid-fluid segregation under an applied pressure on the solid constituent. We prove that, depending on the dissipation mechanism, the dynamics is described either by a Cahn-Hilliard or by an Allen-Cahn-like equation. More precisely, when the dissipation is modeled via the Darcy law we find that, for small deformation of the solid and small variations of the fluid density, the evolution equation is very similar to the Cahn-Hilliard equation. On the other hand, when only the Stokes dissipation term is considered, we find that the evolution …
The two-scale computational homogenization method is proposed for modelling of locally periodic fluid-saturated media subjected a to large deformation induced by quasistatic loading. The periodic heterogeneities are relevant to the mesoscopic scale at which a double porous medium constituted by hyperelastic skeleton and an incompressible viscous fluid is featured by large contrasts in the permeability. Within the Eulerian framework related to the current deformed configuration, the two-scale homogenization approach is applied to a linearized model discretized in time, being associated with an …
This work considers the gravitational instability of a saline boundary layer formed by an evaporation-induced flow through a fully-saturated porous slab. Evaporation of saline waters can eventually result in the formation of salt lakes as salt accumulates. As natural convection can impede the accumulation of salt, establishing a relation between its occurrence and the value of physical parameters such as evaporation rate, height of the slab or porosity is crucial. One step towards determining when gravitational instabilities can arise is to compute the ground-state salinity, that evolves due t…

We show the impact that scalar structures deformation and mixing has on the fate of plumes of waterborne contaminant transported through a chemically heterogeneous, partially adsorbing porous medium. Via pore-scale simulations, we follow the dynamic of a passive scalar injected in a packed bed consisting of a mixture of chemically inert and adsorbing spherical particles. By varying the fraction of the adsorbers $ξ$, randomly distributed in the porous volume, we find that the waterborne solute forms concentration plumes emerging between pairs of adsorbing particles. This deformation is a conseq…
The problem of steady mixed convection boundary-layer flow on a cooled vertical permeable circular cylinder embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium is studied. Here, we evaluate the flow and heat transfer characteristics numerically for various values of the governing parameters and demonstrate the existence of dual solutions beyond a critical point.
The simultaneous presence of liquid and gas in porous media increases flow heterogeneity compared to saturated flows. However, so far the impact of saturation on flow statistics and transport dynamics remained unclear. Here, we develop a theoretical framework that captures the impact of flow reorganization on the statistics of pore-scale fluid velocities, due to the presence of gas in the pore space, which leads to the development of a highly-structured flow field. Preferential flow is distributed spatially through the denoted backbone and flow recirculation occurs in dead-end regions branchin…
A numerical solution is presented for the natural convection from inclined wall plumes which arise from a line thermal source imbedded at the leading edge of an adiabatic plate with arbitrary tilt angle and embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. An appropriate transformation of the governing boundary-layer equations is proposed and a very efficient novel numerical solution is proposed to obtain rigorous numerical solutions of the transformed nonsimilar equations over a wide range of tilt angle from the vertical to the horizontal.
The behavior of gas bubbles in porous media includes bubble nucleation and growth, migration, coalescence, and trapping. These processes are significantly affected by the pore-scale characteristics and heterogeneity of the sediment. In this study, experiments are performed using a microfluidic chip in which different gas bubble behavior mechanisms are observed. Based on the microscale experiments, eight major gas bubble behavior mechanisms are identified. In addition, a mesoscale experiment is designed and performed to study the impacts of soil layering and heterogeneity on the formation and d…
Porous sediments in geological systems are exposed to stress by the above-laying mass and consequent compaction, which may be significantly nonuniform across the massif. We derive scaling laws for the compaction of sediments of similar geological origin. With these laws, we evaluate the dependence of the transport properties of a fluid-saturated porous medium (permeability, effective molecular diffusivity, hydrodynamic dispersion, electrical and thermal conductivities) on its porosity. In particular, we demonstrate that the assumption of a uniform geothermal gradient is not adequate for system…
This study investigates the effect of a Maxwellian fluid on the propagation of waves in poroelastic media. Based on a fractional derivative stress-strain relation, a viscous dissipation function is obtained to measure the viscoelastic fluid-solid coupling effect. With the viscous dissipation function, elastic waves propagation is formulated in poroelastic media saturated by a fractional derivative Maxwellian fluid, and the analytical expression of the P- and S-wave dispersion/attenuation is presented. Numerical examples show that the fractional derivative Maxwell strain-stress relation has a s…
We propose a theory for erosional channelization induced by fluid flow in a saturated granular porous medium. When the local fluid flow-induced stress is larger than a critical threshold, grains are dislodged and carried away so that the porosity of the medium is altered by erosion. This in turn affects the local hydraulic conductivity and pressure in the medium and results in the growth and development of channels that preferentially conduct the flow. Our multiphase model involves a dynamical porosity field that evolves along with the volume fraction of the mobile and immobile grains in respo…
We analyze the behaviour of acoustic vortex beams interacting with rotating, fluid-saturated porous materials. Regions of the parameter space that exhibit distinct dynamical features are identified, with a focus on features that are relevant to the characterization of rotational superradiance. We discuss the similarities and differences between two recent proposals to observe acoustic superradiance with rotating, air-saturated sound absorbers. Finally, theoretical predictions for macroscopic acoustic scattering, obtained by averaging over interactions between the fluid and the porous material …
Reservoir rocks are usually composed of a coherent heterogeneous porous matrix saturated by multiple fluids. At long wavelength limit, the composite material of solid skeleton is usually regarded as homogeneous media. However, at grain scale or high loading rate, non-uniform fluid flow at internal interface of heterogeneity plays essential role in wave dispersion and attenuation. Formulating wave propagation in partially saturated and fractured rocks is challenging and of great interests in geoscience. Here we raise a Biot-patchy-squirt (BIPS) model to characterize wave dispersion/attenuation …
We introduce a Darcy-scale model to describe compressible multi-component flow in a fully saturated porous medium. In order to capture cross-diffusive effects between the different species correctly, we make use of the Maxwell--Stefan theory in a thermodynamically consistent way. For inviscid flow the model turns out to be a nonlinear system of hyperbolic balance laws. We show that the dissipative structure of the Maxwell-Stefan operator permits to guarantee the existence of global classical solutions for initial data close to equilibria. Furthermore it is proven by relative entropy techniques…
We present a numerical study of convection in a horizontal layer comprising a fluid-saturated porous bed overlain by an unconfined fluid layer. Convection is driven by a vertical, destabilising temperature difference applied across the whole system, as in the canonical Rayleigh-Bénard problem. Numerical simulations are carried out using a single-domain formulation of the two-layer problem based on the Darcy-Brinkman equations. We explore the dynamics and heat flux through the system in the limit of large Rayleigh number, but small Darcy number, such that the flow exhibits vigorous convection i…
We study the fractionation of two components between a well-mixed gas and a saturated convecting porous layer. Motivated by geological carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) storage we assume that convection is driven only by the dissolved concentration of the first component, while the second acts as a tracer with increased diffusivity. Direct numerical simulations for convection at high Rayleigh numbers reveal that the partitioning of the components, in general, does not follow a Rayleigh fractionation trend, as commonly assumed. Initially, increases in tracer diffusivity also increase its flux, because th…
The present article discusses the impact of liquid coolant subcooling on multiphase fluid flow and boiling heat transfer in porous media with internal heat generation. Although extremely relevant and important, only limited studies are available in the open literature on the effects of coolant subcooling in heat-generating porous media and hence, this requires a detailed analysis. The analysis is carried out using a developed computational model of multiphase fluid flow through clear fluid and porous media considering the relevant heat transfer and mass transfer phenomena. Results suggest that…
We develop our existing two-dimensional lattice-gas model to simulate the flow of single-phase, binary-immiscible and ternary-amphiphilic fluids. This involves the inclusion of fixed obstacles on the lattice, together with the inclusion of ``no-slip'' boundary conditions. Here we report on preliminary applications of this model to the flow of such fluids within model porous media. We also construct fluid invasion boundary conditions, and the effects of invading aqueous solutions of surfactant on oil-saturated rock during imbibition and drainage are described.
We perform linear and nonlinear stability analysis for thermal convection in a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium. We use a coupled system, with the Navier-Stokes equations and Darcy's equation governing the free-flow and the porous regions respectively. Incorporating a dynamic pressure term in the Lions interface condition (which specifies the normal force balance across the fluid-medium interface) permits an energy bound on the typically uncooperative nonlinear advection term, enabling new nonlinear stability results. Within certain regimes, the nonlinear stability thresholds agree cl…
This investigation deals with the analysis of stagnation point heat transfer and corresponding flow features of hydromagnetic viscous incompressible fluid over a vertical shrinking sheet. The considered sheet is assumed to be permeable and subject to addition of stagnation point to control the generated vorticity in the boundary layer. The sheet is placed on the right side of the fluid saturated porous medium which is having permeability of specified form. Nonlinear convection waves in the flow field are realized due to the envisaged nonlinear relation between density and temperature. The equa…
When a fluid is injected into a porous medium saturated with an ambient fluid of a greater density, the injected fluid forms a plume that rises upwards due to buoyancy. In the near-field of the injection point the plume adjusts its speed to match the buoyancy velocity of the porous medium, either thinning or thickening to conserve mass. These adjustments are the dominant controls on the near-field plume shape, rather than mixing with the ambient fluid, which occurs over larger vertical distances. In this study, we focus on the plume behaviour in the near-field, demonstrating that for moderate …
We investigate the effect of a temperature gradient on oil recovery in a two-dimensional pore-network model. The oil viscosity depends on temperature as, $μ_o=exp(B/T)$, where $B$ is a physico-chemical parameter depending on the type of oil, and $T$ is the temperature. A temperature gradient is applied across the medium in the flow direction. Initially, the porous medium is saturated with oil and, then, another fluid is injected. We have considered two cases representing different injection strategies. In the first case, the invading fluid viscosity is constant (finite viscosity ratio) while i…

Transported chemical reactions in unsaturated porous media are relevant across a range of environmental and industrial applications. Continuum scale dispersive models are often based on equivalent parameters derived from analogy with saturated conditions, and cannot appropriately account for processes such as incomplete mixing. It is also unclear how the third dimension controls mixing and reactions in unsaturated conditions. We obtain 3$D$ experimental images of the phases distribution and of transported chemical reaction by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) using an immiscible non-wetting liq…
We numerically examine solutal convection in porous media, driven by the dissolution of carbon dioxide (CO2) into water---an effective mechanism for CO2 storage in saline aquifers. Dissolution is associated with slow diffusion of free-phase CO2 into the underlying aqueous phase followed by density-driven convective mixing of CO2 throughout the water-saturated layer. We study the fluid dynamics of CO2 convection in the single aqueous-phase region. A comparison is made between two different boundary conditions in the top of the formation: (i) a constant, maximum aqueous-phase concentration of CO…
Various biological and chemical processes lead to the nucleation and growth of non-wetting fluid bubbles within the pore space of a granular medium, such as the formation of gas bubbles in liquid-saturated lake-bed sediments. In sufficiently soft porous materials, the non-wetting nature of these bubbles can result in the formation of open cavities within the granular solid skeleton. Here, we consider this process through the lens of phase separation, where thermomechanics govern the separation of the non-wetting phase from a fluid-fluid-solid mixture. We construct a phase-field model informed …
Motivated by geological carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) storage, many recent studies have investigated the fluid dynamics of solutal convection in porous media. Here we study the convective dissolution of CO$_2$ in a closed system, where the pressure in the gas declines as convection proceeds. This introduces a negative feedback that reduces the convective dissolution rate even before the brine becomes saturated. We analyse the case of an ideal gas with a solubility given by Henry's law, in the limits of very low and very high Rayleigh numbers. The equilibrium state in this system is determined by the…
The macroscopic spreading and mixing of solute plumes in saturated porous media is ultimately controlled by processes operating at the pore scale. Whilst the conventional picture of pore-scale mechanical dispersion and molecular diffusion leading to persistent hydrodynamic dispersion is well accepted, this paradigm is inherently two-dimensional (2D) in nature and neglects important three-dimensional (3D) phenomena. We discuss how the kinematics of steady 3D flow at the porescale generate chaotic advection, involving exponential stretching and folding of fluid elements, the mechanisms by which i…
Porous asphalt (PA) is an open-graded porous material with a porosity of 20%, allowing fast drainage of rain and improving driving and acoustic conditions. However, the high porosity leads to significant contact with water resulting in a shorter life expectancy. To improve the durability and performance of PA, the distribution of water and its residence time have to be understood which entails capturing diverse multiphase phenomena. For these reasons, a numerical study is performed to analyze in detail the fluid transport mechanisms at play in PA, towards estimating the liquid distribution ins…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of sharp front solutions arising from the nonlinear diffusion equation θ_t = (D(θ)θ_x)_x, where the diffusivity is an exponential function D(θ) = D_o exp(βθ). This problem arises for example in the study of unsaturated flow in porous media where θ represents the liquid saturation. For physical parameters corresponding to actual porous media, the diffusivity at the residual saturation is D(0) = D_o << 1 so that the diffusion problem is nearly degenerate. Such problems are characterised by wetting fronts that sharply delineate regions of saturated and unsaturate…
Studies of the transport of wet water vapour are relevant for various areas of human activity, including the construction and production of building materials, mining, agriculture, environmental safety of technological processes, scientific research. In particular, one of the methods for extracting highly viscous bitumen grades of oil from the subterranean depths is based on the dilution of the contents of the porous medium by means of pumping coolants. The simplest and environmentally friendly coolant is wet steam containing small drops of water. In addition, with the help of heated water vap…
