The two-dimensional d-p model (or extended Hubbard model) on a square lattice is investigated for fermion pairing by a slave boson method. The inter-site d-fermion interaction is introduced additionally. The momentum space counterpart of this interaction is taken to be separable and expanded in terms of basis functions corresponding to mixed symmetry states. The investigation leads to anomalous pairing of fermion fields only for pure d-wave symmetry. The charge and spin ordering gaps appear in the single- particle spectrum when d(x,y) state is taken into account. The non-Fermi liquid behavior is found to be the prevalent one generally. The study yields a good qualitative account of the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. Two gaps appear in the normal state spectrum; the larger one corresponds to the sum and the smaller to the difference of spin and charge ordering gaps. This two-gap scenario is in qualitative agreement with recent experimental finding.
We present a microscopic theory of fluctuation-mediated pairing mechanism in a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model. In contrast to conventional wisdom, odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing can be stabilized near the spin-density-wave critical point. Favorable conditions for the odd-frequency pairing are the presence of geometrical frustration and off-site Coulomb interaction.
We propose the two-leg fermion-ladder models for SU(2|2) and SU(4) cases. The former is exactly the extended Hubbard model proposed by Essler, Korepin and Schoutens. The later is a new model also with $η$-pairing symmetry which is important for superconductivity. This new extension of the Hubbard model can be solved exactly.
Numerical studies of the Hubbard model and its strong-coupling form, the t-J model, show evidence for antiferromagnetic, d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing and stripe correlations which remind one of phenomena seen in the layered cuprate materials. Here, we ask what these numerical results imply about various scenarios for the pairing mechanism.
We study mesoscopic pairing in the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model and its interplay with the BCS model in the canonical ensemble. The key tool is comparing the Bethe ansatz equations of the two models in the limit of small Coulomb repulsion. For the ordinary Hubbard interaction the BCS Bethe equations with infinite pairing coupling are recovered; a finite pairing is obtained by considering a further density-dependent phase-correlation in the hopping amplitude of the Hubbard model. We find that spin degrees of freedom in the Hubbard ground state are arranged in a state of the BCS type,…
In the ground state of the doped two-leg Hubbard ladder there are power-law decaying d_{x^2-y^2}-type pairing correlations. It is important to know the strength and the temperature scale of these correlations. For this purpose, we have performed determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the reducible particle-particle interaction in the Hubbard ladder. In this paper, we report on these calculations and show that, at sufficiently low temperatures, resonant particle-particle scattering takes place in the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing channel for certain values of the model parameters. The QM…
We analyze the influence of phonons on the d-wave pairing instability in the Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice at weak to moderate interaction U, using a functional renormalization group scheme with frequency-dependent interaction vertices. As measured by the pairing scale, the B1g buckling mode enhances the pairing, while other phonon modes decrease the pairing. When various phonon modes are included together, the net effect on the scale is small. However, in situations where d-wave superconductivity and other tendencies, e.g. antiferromagnetism, are closely competing, the c…
We study the superconducting instabilities of singlet and triplet pairing in a two-dimensional Hubbard model on the basis of the third-order perturbation theory (TOPT). We investigate the effect of the vertex correction that is given by TOPT, comparing with the study with only the second-order effective interaction. In our results, a stable p-wave pairing state spreads from low to intermediate electron density. A dx2-y2-wave pairing is dominant for the high density near a half-filling. It is shown that the vertex correction plays an essential role in making the p-wave pairing state dominant.
We show that optical excitation of the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model can create a state possessing two of the hallmarks of superconductivity: a nonvanishing charge stiffness and long-ranged pairing correlation. By employing the exact diagonalization method, we find that the superposition of the $η$-pairing eigenstates induced by the optical pump exhibits a nonvanishing charge stiffness and a pairing correlation that decays very slowly with system size in sharp contrast to the behavior of an ensemble of thermally excited eigenstates, which has a vanishing charge sti…
We present the results of a quantum Monte Carlo study of the extended $s$ and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlation functions for the two-dimensional Hubbard model, computed with the constrained-path method. For small lattice sizes and weak interactions, we find that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing correlations are stronger than the extended $s$ pairing correlations and are positive when the pair separation exceeds several lattice constants. As the system size or the interaction strength increases, the magnitude of the long-range part of both correlation functions vanishes.
A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectrum with a narrow bandwidth. We calculate superconducting Tc by taking into account the pairing mediated by charge and spi…
We rigorously prove that an extended Hubbard model with attraction in two dimensions has an unconventional pairing ground state for any electron filling. The anisotropic spin-0 or anisotropic spin-1 pairing symmetry is realized, depending on a phase parameter characterizing the type of local attractive interactions. In both cases the ground state is unique. It is also shown that in a special case, where there are no electron hopping terms, the ground state has Ising-type Néel order at half-filling, when on-site repulsion is furthermore added. Physical applications are mentioned.
The exact numerical diagonalization and thermodynamics in an ensemble of small Hubbard clusters in the ground state and finite temperatures reveal intriguing insights into the nascent charge and spin pairings, Bose condensation and ferromagnetism in nanoclusters. The phase diagram off half filling strongly suggests the existence of subsequent transitions from electron pairing into unsaturated and saturated ferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard like insulators, driven by electron repulsion. Rigorous criteria for the existence of quantum critical points in the ground state and corresponding crossovers at f…
We have recently developed a canonical transformation of the Hubbard and related models, valid for systems of arbitrary size and for the full plane; this is particularly suited to study hole pairing. In this work we show that exact diagonalization results of the one band Hubbard model for small clusters with periodic boundary conditions agree well with the analytical ones obtained by means of our canonical transformation. In the presence of a pairing instability, the analytic approach allows us to identify the Cooper pairs. They are W=0 pairs, that is, singlet two-hole eigenstates of the Hubba…
The question of whether one should speak of a "pairing glue" in the Hubbard and t-J models is basically a question about the dynamics of the pairing interaction. If the dynamics of the pairing interaction arises from virtual states, whose energies correspond to the Mott gap, and give rise to the exchange coupling J, the interaction is instantaneous on the relative time scales of interest. In this case, while one might speak of an "instantaneous glue", this interaction differs from the traditional picture of a retarded pairing interaction. However, if the energies correspond to the spectrum see…
Dynamic cluster Monte Carlo calculations for the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model are used to study the irreducible particle-particle vertex responsible for $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing in this model. This vertex increases with increasing momentum transfer and decreases when the energy transfer exceeds a scale associated with the $Q=(π, π)$ spin susceptibility. Using an exact decomposition of this vertex into a fully irreducible two-fermion vertex and charge and magnetic exchange channels, the dominant part of the effective pairing interaction is found to come from the magnetic, spin S=1 exchange …
The spin-rotationally invariant SU(2) approach to the Hubbard model is extended to accommodate the charge degrees of freedom. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformation are useed to factorize the charge and spin contribution to the original electron operator in terms of the emergent gauge fields. It is shown that these fields play a similar role as phonons in the BCS theory: they provide the "glue" for fermion pairing. By tracing out gauge bosons the form of paired states is established and the role of antiferromagnetic correlations is explicated.
The two-leg Hubbard ladder is characterized by the ratio of the inter- to intra-leg hopping t_perp/t, the relative interaction strength U/t and the electron filling. Here, using density matrix renormalization group and Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the dependence of the pairing correlations on these parameters. We find that the pairing correlations are enhanced when the top of the bonding quasiparticle band and the bottom of the antibonding band are near the Fermi level. We present results on the single-particle spectral weight and the antiferromagnetic correlations in order to explain t…
The mean field Green function solution of the two-band singlet-hole Hubbard model for high-$T\sb{c}$ superconductivity in cuprates (Plakida, N.M. et al., Phys. Rev. B51, 16599 (1995), JETP 97, 331 (2003)) involves expressions of higher order correlation functions describing respectively the singlet hopping and the superconducting pairing. Rigorous derivation of their values is reported based on the finding that specific invariant classes of polynomial Green functions in terms of the Wannier overlap coefficients $ν\sb{ij}$ exist.
In order to numerically study electron correlation effects in multi-orbital systems, we propose a new type of discrete transformation for the exchange (Hund's coupling) and pair-hopping interactions to be used in the dynamical mean field theory + quantum Monte Carlo method. The transformation, which is real and exact, turns out to suppress the sign problem in a wide parameter region including non-half-filled bands. This enables us to obtain the dominant pairing symmetry in the double-orbital Hubbard model, which shows that the spin-triplet, orbital-antisymmetric pairing that exploits Hund's co…
We examine the validity of the weak coupling spin-susceptibility "glue" approximation (SSGA) in a two-dimensional Hubbard model for cuprates. For comparison, we employ the well-established dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as a cluster solver. We compare the leading eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of the DCA and SSGA pairing matrices. For realistic model parameters, we find that the SSGA fails to capture the leading pairing symmetries seen in the DCA. Furthermore, when the SSGA is improved through the addition of a term with d-wave symmetry…
The ferromagnetism of the checkerboard lattice Hubbard model at quarter filling is one of the few exact ferromagnetic ground states known in the family of Hubbard models. When the nearest neighbor hopping, t1, is negligible compared with the second neighbor one, t2, the system reduces to a collection of Hubbard chains. We find that the 1D character is surprisingly robust as long as t1 < t2. This phenomenon of dimensional reduction due to the geometrical frustration leads to peculiar magnetic orders with 1D character for intermediate U and is responsible for odd-frequency superconducting states…
The bilayer Hubbard model with an intra-layer hopping $t$ and an inter-layer hopping $t_\perp$ provides an interesting testing ground for several aspects of what has been called unconventional superconductivity. One can study the type of pair structures which arise when there are multiple Fermi surfaces. One can also examine the pairing for a system in which the structure of the spin-fluctuation spectral weight can be changed. Using a dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we find that near half-filling, if the splitting between the bonding and anti-bonding bands $t_\perp/t$ is sma…
We study signatures of superconductivity in a 2--leg "checkerboard" Hubbard ladder model, defined as a one--dimensional (period 2) array of square plaquettes with an intra-plaquette hopping $t$ and inter-plaquette hopping $t'$, using the density matrix renormalization group method. The highest pairing scale (characterized by the spin gap or the pair binding energy, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit) is found for doping levels close to half filling, $U\approx 6t$ and $t'/t \approx 0.6$. Other forms of modulated hopping parameters, with periods of either 1 or 3 lattice constants, are also …
A dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation is used to study the effective pairing interaction of a 2D Hubbard model with a near neighbor hopping $t$ and an on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ . The effective pairing interaction is characterized in terms of the momentum and frequency dependence of the eigenfunction of the leading eigenvalue of the irreducible particle-particle vertex. The momentum dependence of this eigenfunction is found to vary as $(\cos k_x-\cos k_y)$ over most of the Brillouin zone and its frequency dependence is determined by the exchange energy $J$. This implies that…
We show that doping-induced charge fluctuations in strongly correlated Hubbard electron systems near the 1/2-filled, insulating limit cause overscreening of the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. The resulting attractive screened interaction potential supports d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing with a strongly peaked, doping dependent pairing strength at lower doping, followed by s-wave pairing at larger doping levels.
We investigate the role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in strongly correlated systems by performing unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the square lattice Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling. We study the competition and interplay between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and charge-density wave (CDW), establishing its very rich phase diagram. In the region between AFM and CDW phases, we have found an enhancement of superconducting pairing correlations, favoring (nonlocal) $s$-wave pairs. Our study sheds light over past inconsistencies in the literature, in particular …
We study spin-half fermions in a one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain at low filling. We identify three triplet and one singlet pairing channels in the system, which are independently tunable as a function of nearest-neighbor charge and spin interactions. In a large-size system with translational invariance, we derive gap equations for the corresponding pairing gaps and obtain a Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian with its non-trivial topology determined by the interplay of these gaps. In an open-end system with a fixed number of particles, we compute the exact many-body ground state and identi…
BCS theory accounts for the pairing instability in the weak coupling limit, but fails to describe pairing fluctuations above $T_c$. One possibility for describing these fluctuations in the dilute limit is the T-matrix approximation. We critically examine various degrees of self-consistency in the T-matrix formalism, along with a non-diagrammatic two-particle self-consistent (TPSC) formulation, in the strong coupling regime, where an exact solution is readily available. We find that one particular degree of self-consistency is quite accurate, particularly at low temperature as evidenced by exam…
Proposals for superconductivity emerging from correlated electrons in the doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice range from chiral $d+id$ singlet to $p+ip$ triplet pairing, depending on the considered range of doping and interaction strength, as well as the approach used to analyze the pairing instabilities. Here, we consider these scenarios using large-scale dynamic cluster approximation (DCA) calculations to examine the evolution in the leading pairing symmetry from weak to intermediate coupling strength. These calculations focus on doping levels around the van Hove singularity (VHS) a…
We implement the rotationally-invariant formulation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, with nearest-neighbors hopping $t$, which allows for the analytical study of the system in the low-energy limit. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformations are used to factorize the charge and spin contributions to the original electron operator in terms of the corresponding gauge fields. The Hubbard Coulomb energy $U$ term is then expressed in terms of quantum phase variables conjugate to the local charge and variable spin-quantization axis, providing a useful representation of strongly correlated systems…
A dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is used to study a spin susceptibility representation of the pairing interaction for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with an on-site Coulomb interaction equal to the bandwidth for various doping levels. We find that the pairing interaction is well approximated by ${3/2}\Ub(T)^2χ(K-K')$ with an effective temperature and doping dependent coupling $\Ub(T)$ and the numerically calculated spin susceptibility $χ(K-K')$. We show that at low temperatures, $\Ub$ may be accurately determined from a corresponding spin susceptibility based calculation of t…
We develop a DCA(PQMC) algorithm which employs the projective quantum Monte Carlo (PQMC) method for solving the equations of the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) at zero temperature, and apply it for studying pair susceptibilities of the two-dimensional Hubbard-model with next-nearest neighbor hopping. In particular, we identify which pairing symmetry is dominant in the U-n parameter space (U: repulsive Coulomb interaction; n: electron density). We find that p_{x+y}- (d_{x^2-y^2}-) wave is dominant among triplet (singlet) pairings -at least for 0.3<n<0.8 and U<=4t. The crossover between d…
In order to explore how superconductivity arises when charge fluctuations and spin fluctuations coexist, we have obtained a phase diagram against the off-site repulsion V and band filling n for the extended, repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with the fluctuation exchange approximation. We have found the existence of (i) a transition between dxy and dx2-y2 pairing symmetries, (ii) f-pairing in between the dx2-y2 and CDW phases for intermediate 0.5<n<1.0 and large V, and (iii) for anisotropic cases the pairing symmetry changing, in agreement with a previously proposed ``generic phase…
Monte Carlo calculations of the irreducible particle-particle interaction on a two-leg Hubbard ladder doped near half-filling are reported. As the temperature is lowered, this interaction develops structure in momentum space similar to the magnetic susceptibility $χ(q)$ and reflects the development of strong short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Using this interaction, the eigenfunction of the leading singlet pair eigenvalue is found to have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ like symmetry. The single-particle spectral weight is also shown to peak near $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ when the ratio of the inter- to intr…
We study the Cu_{5}O_{4} cluster by exact diagonalization of a three-band Hubbard model and show that bound electron or hole pairs are obtained at appropriate fillings, and produce superconducting flux quantisation. The results extend earlier cluster studies and illustrate a canonical transformation approach to pairing that we have developed recently for the full plane. The quasiparticles that in the many-body problem behave like Cooper pairs are W=0 pairs, that is, two-hole eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian with vanishing on-site repulsion. The cluster allows W=0 pairs of d symmetry, due…
The Hubbard model provides a simple framework in which one can study how certain aspects of the electronic structure of strongly interacting systems can be tuned to optimize the superconducting pairing correlations and how these changes affect the mechanisms giving rise to them. Here we use a weak-coupling random phase approximation to study a two-dimensional Hubbard model with a unidirectional modulation of the hopping amplitudes as the system evolves from the uniform square lattice to an array of weakly coupled two-leg ladders. We find that the pairing correlations retain their dominant $d_{…
We study how to incorporate Mott physics in the BCS-type superconductor, motivated from the fact that high $T_c$ superconductivity results from a Mott insulator via hole doping. The U(1) slave-rotor representation was proposed to take local density fluctuations into account non-perturbatively, describing the Mott-Hubbard transition at half filling. Since this decomposition cannot control local pairing fluctuations, the U(1) slave-rotor representation does not give a satisfactory treatment for charge fluctuations. Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation, we introduce an SU(2) slave-rotor …
Possibility of unconventional pairing due to Coulomb interaction in iron-pnictide superconductors is studied by applying a perturbative approach to realistic 2- and 5-band Hubbard models. The linearized Eliashberg equation is solved by expanding the effective pairing interaction perturbatively up to third order in the on-site Coulomb integrals. The numerical results for the 5-band model suggest that the eigenvalues of the Eliashberg equation are sufficiently large to explain the actual high Tc for realistic values of Coulomb interaction and the most probable pairing state is spin-singlet s-wav…
A Dynamical Mean Field Theory analysis of the attractive Hubbard model is carried out. We focus on the normal state upon restricting to solutions where superconducting order is not allowed. Nevertheless a clear first-order pairing transition as a function of the coupling takes place at all the electron densities out of half-filling. The transition occurs between a Fermi liquid, stable for $U < U_c$, and an insulating bound pairs phase for $U > U_c$. The spectral function in the Fermi liquid phase is constituted by a low energy structure around the Fermi level (similar to the Kondo resonance of…
Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is used to determine the pairing and magnetic response for a Hubbard model built up from four-site clusters -a two-dimensional square lattice consisting of elemental 2x2 plaquettes with hopping $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$ coupled by an inter-plaquette hopping $t' \leq t$. Superconductivity in this geometry has previously been studied by a variety of analytic and numeric methods, with differing conclusions concerning whether the pairing correlations and transition temperature are raised near half-filling by the inhomogeneous hopping or not. For $U/t=4$, …
The BCS-BEC crossover within the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model is studied by using the Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field Theory both in the normal and superconducting ground states. Short-range spatial correlations incorporated in this theory remove the normal-state quasiparticle peak and the first-order transition found in the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, rendering the normal state crossover smooth. For $U$ smaller than the bandwidth, pairing is driven by the potential energy, while in the opposite case it is driven by the kinetic energy, resembling a recent optical conductivity experi…
The Hamiltonian describing a system of strongly correlated electrons coupled to dispersionless phonons was solved numerically for a ring of 8 atoms using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. It was found that electron correlation and electron-phonon coupling compete against each other, and strong electron correlations suppress the charge-ordered insulating state. This allows extended polarons to form in the strong electron-phonon coupling regime. It is shown that in this regime two polarons may form a pair via phonon mediated charge-fluctuation interaction. Based on the resu…
Lattice Hamiltonians with on-site interaction $W$ have W=0 solutions, that is, many-body {\em singlet} eigenstates without double occupation. In particular, W=0 pairs give a clue to understand the pairing force in repulsive Hubbard models. These eigenstates are found in systems with high enough symmetry, like the square, hexagonal or triangular lattices. By a general theorem, we propose a systematic way to construct all the W=0 pairs of a given Hamiltonian. We also introduce a canonical transformation to calculate the effective interaction between the particles of such pairs. In geometries app…
By employing unbiased numerical methods, we show that pulse irradiation can induce unconventional superconductivity even in the Mott insulator of the Hubbard model. The superconductivity found here in the photoexcited state is due to the $η$-pairing mechanism, characterized by staggered pair-density-wave oscillations in the off-diagonal long-range correlation, and is absent in the ground-state phase diagram; i.e., it is induced neither by a change of the effective interaction of the Hubbard model nor by simple photocarrier doping. Because of the selection rule, we show that the nonlinear optic…
Evidence for the presence of high energy magnetic excitations in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) has raised questions regarding the role of spin-fluctuations in the pairing mechanism. If they remain present in overdoped LSCO, why does $T_c$ decrease in this doping regime? Here, using results for the dynamic spin susceptibility ${\rm Im}χ(q,ω)$ obtained from a determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculation for the Hubbard model we address this question. We find that while high energy magnetic excitations persist in the overdoped regime, they lack the momentum to scatter pairs bet…
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and two-leg ladders, we investigate an electronic two-orbital Hubbard model including plaquette diagonal hopping amplitudes. Our goal is to search for regimes where charges added to the undoped state form pairs, presumably a precursor of a superconducting state. For the electronic density $ρ=2$, i.e. the undoped limit, our investigations show a robust $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetic ground state, as in previous investigations. Doping away from $ρ=2$ and for large values of the Hund coupling $J$, a ferromagnetic region is found to be stable. Moreover, whe…
We propose a canonical tranformation approach to the effective interaction $W_{eff}$ between two holes, based on the three-band Hubbard model but ready to include extra interactions as well. An effective two-body Hamiltonian can in principle be obtained including any kind of virtual intermediate states. We derive the closed-form analytic expression of the effective interaction including 4-body virtual states, describing the exchange of an electron-hole pair to all orders. The resulting integral equation, valid for the full plane, leads to a Cooper-like instability of the Fermi liquid. The two-…
We study the existence of intraband and interband pairing in the extended two band and three-band Hubbard model. It is shown that including interband pairing significantly increases the superconducting critical temperature in comparison with critical temperature of the intraband pairing. This increase allows for decrease of the nearest-neighbor interaction constant necessary for critical temperature in high temperature superconductors to the realistic values.
The finite-temperature phase diagram of the attractive Hubbard model is studied by means of the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We first consider the normal phase of the model by explicitly frustrating the superconducting ordering. In this case we obtain a first-order pairing transition between a metallic phase and a paired phase formed by strongly coupled incoherent pairs. The transition line ends in a finite temperature critical point, but a crossover between two qualitatively different solutions still occurs at higher temperature. Comparing the superconducting and the normal phase solutions, w…
The numerical studies of d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing in the two-dimensional (2D) and the 2-leg Hubbard models are reviewed. For this purpose, the results obtained from the determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo and the density-matrix renormalization-group calculations are presented. These are calculations which were motivated by the discovery of the high-T_c cuprates. In this review, the emphasis is placed on the microscopic many-body processes which are responsible for the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing correlations observed in the 2D and the 2-leg Hubbard models. In order to gain insight into these proces…
Dynamic Hubbard models have been proposed as extensions of the conventional Hubbard model to describe the orbital relaxation that occurs upon double occupancy of an atomic orbital. These models give rise to pairing of holes and superconductivity in certain parameter ranges. Here we explore the changes in carrier effective mass and quasiparticle weight and in one- and two-particle spectral functions that occur in a dynamic Hubbard model upon pairing, by exact diagonalization of small systems. It is found that pairing is associated with lowering of effective mass and increase of quasiparticle we…
Using a recently developed renormalization group method for fermionic superfluids, we determine conditions for d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at moderate interaction strength, and we compute the pairing gap in the superconducting regime. A pairing instability signaled by a divergent flow in the Cooper channel leads to a superconducting state in all studied cases. The next-to-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$ plays a crucial role in the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. A sizable $t'$ is necessary to obtain a sizable pairing gap.
By a canonical transformation of the three-band Hubbard model, we introduce an effective Hamiltonian for the propagation of two holes doped into the ground state of the Cu-O plane. When the pair belongs to the $^{1}B_{2}$ or $% ^{1}A_{2}$ Irreducible Representations of the C$_{4v}$ Group, the bare holes do not interact by the on-site repulsion; the effective interaction between the dressed holes is obtained analytically in terms of renormalized matrix elements, and generalizes earlier findings from cluster calculations. The Fermi liquid is unstable and numerical estimates with reasonable param…
The fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation is applied to study the Holstein-Hubbard model. Due to the retarded nature of the phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction, neither fast Fourier transform (FFT) nor previously developed NRG methods for Hubbard-type purely electronic models are applicable, while brute force solutions are limited by the demands on computational time and storage which increase rapidly at low temperature $T$. Here,we describe a new numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique to solve the FLEX equations efficiently. Several orders of magnitude of CPU time and s…
It is shown that in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, the mean-field phase transition is replaced by a renormalized classical regime of fluctuations where a pseudogap opens up in the single-particle spectral weight. It is argued that this pseudogap and precursors of the ordered state quasiparticles can occur only in strongly anisotropic quasi two-dimensional materials. This precursor phenomenon differs from preformed local pairs. Furthermore, while critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations would also lead to a pseudogap in the repulsive model, there are some important differences bet…
We study the three-band Hubbard model for the copper oxide plane of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) and provide a comprehensive view of the pairing correlations in this model using these methods. Specifically, we compute the pair-field susceptibility and study its dependence on temperature, doping, interaction strength, and charge-transfer energy. Using the DCA, we also solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the two-particle Green's function in the particle-particle channel to determine the transit…
