We study the Gaussian hermitian random matrix ensemble with an external matrix which has an arbitrary number of eigenvalues with arbitrary multiplicity. We compute the limiting eigenvalues correlations when the size of the matrix goes to infinity in non-critical regimes. We show that they exhibit universal behavior and can be expressed with the Sine and Airy kernels. We also briefly review the implication of these results in terms of non-intersecting Brownian motions.
We show that the squared maximal height of the top path among $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges starting and ending at the origin is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random matrix drawn from the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble. This result can be thought of as a discrete version of K. Johansson's result that the supremum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola has the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution, and as such it provides an explanation for how this distribution arises in models belonging to the KPZ universality class with flat initial data. The result can be recast in terms of the prob…
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions, corresponding to the eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ Hermitian Brownian motion. At the boundary of their limit shape we find that only three universal processes can arise: the Pearcey process close to merging points, the Airy line ensemble at edges and a novel determinantal process describing the transition from the Pearcey process to the Airy line ensemble. The three cases are distinguished by a remarkably simple integral condition. Our results hold under very mild assumptions, in particular we do not require any kind of convergence of the initial…
We consider finite collections of $N$ non-intersecting Brownian paths on the line and on the half-line with both absorbing and reflecting boundary conditions (corresponding to Brownian excursions and reflected Brownian motions) and compute in each case the joint distribution of the maximal height of the top path and the location at which this maximum is attained. The resulting formulas are analogous to the ones obtained in [MFQR13] for the joint distribution of $\mathcal{M}={\rm max}_{x\in\mathbb{R}}\{\mathcal{A}_2(x)-x^2\}$ and $\mathcal{T}={\rm argmax}_{x\in\mathbb{R}}\{\mathcal{A}_2(x)-x^2\…
Consider n non-intersecting particles on the real line (Dyson Brownian motions), all starting from the origin at time=0, and forced to return to x=0 at time=1. For large n, the average mean density of particles has its support, for each 0<t<1, within the interior of an ellipse. The Airy process is defined as the motion of these non-intersecting Brownian motions for large n, but viewed from an arbitrary point on the ellipse with an appropriate space-time rescaling. Assume now a finite number r of these particles are forced to a different target point. Does it affect the Brownian fluctuations al…
We study a system of N non-intersecting Brownian motions on a line segment [0,L] with periodic, absorbing and reflecting boundary conditions. We show that the normalized reunion probabilities of these Brownian motions in the three models can be mapped to the partition function of two-dimensional continuum Yang-Mills theory on a sphere respectively with gauge groups U(N), Sp(2N) and SO(2N). Consequently, we show that in each of these Brownian motion models, as one varies the system size L, a third order phase transition occurs at a critical value L=L_c(N)\sim \sqrt{N} in the large N limit. Clos…
We study a system of $N$ non-intersecting $(1+1)$-dimensional fluctuating elastic interfaces (`vicious bridges') at thermal equilibrium, each subject to periodic boundary condition in the longitudinal direction and in presence of a substrate that induces an external confining potential for each interface. We show that, for a large system and with an appropriate choice of the external confining potential, the joint distribution of the heights of the $N$ non-intersecting interfaces at a fixed point on the substrate can be mapped to the joint distribution of the eigenvalues of a Wishart matrix of…
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions corresponding to initial configurations which have a vanishing density in the large $n$ limit at an interior point of the support. It is understood that the point of vanishing can propagate up to a critical time, and we investigate the nature of the microscopic space-time correlations near the critical point and critical time. We show that they are described either by the Pearcey process or by the Airy line ensemble, depending on whether a simple integral related to the initial configuration vanishes or not. Since the Airy line ensemble typically …
We study $N$ vicious Brownian bridges propagating from an initial configuration $\{a_1 < a_2 < \ldots< a_N \}$ at time $t=0$ to a final configuration $\{b_1 < b_2 < \ldots< b_N \}$ at time $t=t_f$, while staying non-intersecting for all $0\leq t \leq t_f$. We first show that this problem can be mapped to a non-intersecting Dyson's Brownian bridges with Dyson index $β=2$. For the latter we derive an exact effective Langevin equation that allows to generate very efficiently the vicious bridge configurations. In particular, for the flat-to-flat configuration in the large $N$ limit, where $a_i = b…
We consider the partition function $Z_{\ell}(\vec x,0\vert \vec y,t)$ of $\ell$ non-intersecting continuous directed polymers of length $t$ in dimension $1+1$, in a white noise environment, starting from positions $\vec x$ and terminating at positions $\vec y$. When $\ell=1$, it is well known that for fixed $x$, the field $\log Z_1(x,0\vert y,t)$ solves the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and admits the Brownian motion as a stationary measure. In particular, as $t$ goes to infinity, $Z_1(x,0\vert y,t)/Z_1(x,0\vert 0,t) $ converges to the exponential of a Brownian motion $B(y)$. In this article, w…
We study the extreme statistics of N non-intersecting Brownian motions (vicious walkers) over a unit time interval in one dimension. Using path-integral techniques we compute exactly the joint distribution of the maximum M and of the time τ_M at which this maximum is reached. We focus in particular on non-intersecting Brownian bridges ("watermelons without wall") and non-intersecting Brownian excursions ("watermelons with a wall"). We discuss in detail the relationships between such vicious walkers models in watermelons configurations and stochastic growth models in curved geometry on the one …
We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions. The derivations of the measures are based on the Karlin-McGregor or Lindström-Gessel-Viennot method. We use the measure to show some asymptotic results for the mode…
Height fluctuations are studied in the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with periodic boundaries, with a focus on how late time relaxation towards the non-equilibrium steady state depends on the initial condition. Using a reformulation of the matrix product representation for the dominant eigenstate, the statistics of the height at large scales is expressed, for arbitrary initial conditions, in terms of extremal values of independent standard Brownian bridges. Comparison with earlier exact Bethe ansatz asymptotics leads to explicit conjectures for some conditional pr…
Consider non-intersecting Brownian motions on the line leaving from the origin and forced to two arbitrary points. Letting the number of Brownian particles tend to infinity, and upon rescaling, there is a point of bifurcation, where the support of the density of particles goes from one interval to two intervals. In this paper, we show that at that very point of bifurcation a cusp appears, near which the Brownian paths fluctuate like the Pearcey process. This is a universality result within this class of problems. Tracy and Widom obtained such a result in the symmetric case, when the two target…
The squared Bessel process is a 1-dimensional diffusion process related to the squared norm of a higher dimensional Brownian motion. We study a model of $n$ non-intersecting squared Bessel paths, with all paths starting at the same point $a>0$ at time $t=0$ and ending at the same point $b>0$ at time $t=1$. Our interest lies in the critical regime $ab=1/4$, for which the paths are tangent to the hard edge at the origin at a critical time $t^*\in (0,1)$. The critical behavior of the paths for $n\to\infty$ is studied in a scaling limit with time $t=t^*+O(n^{-1/3})$ and temperature $T=1+O(n^{-2/3}…
The Robinson-Schensted (RS) correspondence and its variants naturally give rise to integrable dynamics of non-intersecting particle systems. In previous work, the author exhibited a RS correspondence for geometric crystals by constructing a Littelmann path model, in general Lie type. Since this representation-theoretic map takes as input a continuous path on a Euclidian space, the natural starting measure is the Wiener measure. In this paper, we characterize the measures induced by Brownian motion through the RS map. On the one hand, the highest weight in the output is a remarkable Markov proc…
Consider non-intersecting Brownian motions on the real line, starting from the origin at t=0, with a number of particles forced to reach p distinct target points at time t=1. This work shows that the transition probability, that is the probability for the particles to pass through windows E_k at times t_k, satisfies, in a new set of variables, a non-linear PDE which can be expressed as a near-Wronskian; that is a determinant of a matrix of size p+1, with each row being a derivative of the previous, except for the last column. It is an interesting open question to understand those equations fro…
The present paper is concerned with properties of multiple Schramm--Loewner evolutions (SLEs) labelled by a parameter $κ\in (0,8]$. Specifically, we consider the solution of the multiple Loewner equation driven by a time change of Dyson's Brownian motions in the non-colliding regime. Although it is often considered that several properties of the solution can be studied by means of commutation relations of SLEs and the absolute continuity, this method is available only in the case that the curves generated by commuting SLEs are separated. Beyond this restriction, it is not even obvious that the…
We consider a model of $n$ non-intersecting squared Bessel processes with one starting point $a>0$ at time t=0 and one ending point $b>0$ at time $t=T$. After proper scaling, the paths fill out a region in the $tx$-plane. Depending on the value of the product $ab$ the region may come to the hard edge at 0, or not. We formulate a vector equilibrium problem for this model, which is defined for three measures, with upper constraints on the first and third measures and an external field on the second measure. It is shown that the limiting mean distribution of the paths at time $t$ is given by the …
Radiation reaction has been investigated traditionally in classical dynamics and recently in non-linear QED for high-intensity field physics by high-intensity lasers. The non-linearity of QED is predicted as the coupling between a highly energetic electron and its radiation. However, the applicable range of external fields in the previous method of the Furry picture is just the case of a plane wave. In this Volume II, we aim the generalization of this applicable range by using the stochastic scalar electron model introduced in Volume I. We discuss the formulation of radiation reaction acting o…
Consider N Brownian bridges B_i:[-N,N] -> R, B_i(-N) = B_i(N) = 0, 1 <= i <= N, conditioned not to intersect. The edge-scaling limit of this system is obtained by taking a limit as N -> infinity of these curves scaled around (0,2^{1/2} N) horizontally by a factor of N^{2/3} and vertically by N^{1/3}. If a parabola is added to each limit curve, an x-translation invariant process sometimes called the multi-line Airy process is obtained. We prove the existence of a version of this process (which we call the Airy line ensemble) in which curves are a.s. everywhere continuous and non-intersecting. T…
We review the method of symplectic invariants recently introduced to solve matrix models loop equations, and further extended beyond the context of matrix models. For any given spectral curve, one defined a sequence of differential forms, and a sequence of complex numbers Fg . We recall the definition of the invariants Fg, and we explain their main properties, in particular symplectic invariance, integrability, modularity,... Then, we give several example of applications, in particular matrix models, enumeration of discrete surfaces (maps), algebraic geometry and topological strings, non-inter…
We study the averaged products of characteristic polynomials for the Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles with external source, and prove Pearcey-type phase transitions for particular full rank perturbations of source. The phases are characterised by determining the explicit functional forms of the scaled limits of the averaged products of characteristic polynomials, which are given as certain multidimensional integrals, with dimension equal to the number of products.
Discrete and continuous non-intersecting random processes have given rise to critical "infinite dimensional diffusions", like the Airy process, the Pearcey process and variations thereof. It has been known that domino tilings of very large Aztec diamonds lead macroscopically to a disordered region within an inscribed ellipse (arctic circle in the homogeneous case), and a regular brick-like region outside the ellipse. The fluctuations near the ellipse, appropriately magnified and away from the boundary of the Aztec diamond, form an Airy process, run with time tangential to the boundary. This pa…
It is well known that there are close connections between non-intersecting processes in one dimension and random matrices, based on the reflection principle. There is a generalisation of the reflection principle for more general (e.g. planar) processes, due to S. Fomin, in which the non-intersection condition is replaced by a condition involving loop-erased paths. In the context of independent Brownian motions in suitable planar domains, this also has close connections to random matrices. An example of this was first observed by Sato and Katori (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 2011). We present further exam…
The paper contains a simple semi-quantitative analysis of a structure of solution to the exact Bogolyubov functional equation for a particle interacting with ideal gas and driven by an external force, in comparison with solutions to model kinetic equations for the same system. It is shown that the exact equation inevitably predicts existence of significant 1/f-type fluctuations in mobility of the particle, and this result directly extends to particles in arbitrary fluid.
We consider a system of diffusing particles on the real line in a quadratic external potential and with repulsive electrostatic interaction. The empirical measure process is known to converge weakly to a deterministic measure-valued process as the number of particles tends to infinity. Provided the initial fluctuations are small, the rescaled linear statistics of the empirical measure process converge in distribution to a Gaussian limit for sufficiently smooth test functions. We derive explicit general formulae for the mean and covariance in this central limit theorem by analyzing a partial di…
Motivated by applications to quantum field theory we consider Gibbs measures for which the reference measure is Wiener measure and the interaction is given by a double stochastic integral and a pinning external potential. In order properly to characterize these measures through DLR equations, we are led to lift Wiener measure and other objects to a space of configurations where the basic observables are not only the position of the particle at all times but also the work done by test vector fields. We prove existence and basic properties of such Gibbs measures in the small coupling regime by m…
In this paper we revisit the problem of Brownian motion in a tilted periodic potential. We use homogenization theory to derive general formulas for the effective velocity and the effective diffusion tensor that are valid for arbitrary tilts. Furthermore, we obtain power series expansions for the velocity and the diffusion coefficient as functions of the external forcing. Thus, we provide systematic corrections to Einstein's formula and to linear response theory. Our theoretical results are supported by extensive numerical simulations. For our numerical experiments we use a novel spectral numer…
