We report on a survey for narrow (FWHM < 600 km/s) CIV absorption lines in a sample of bright quasars at redshifts $1.8 \le z < 2.25$ in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our main goal is to understand the relationship of narrow CIV absorbers to quasar outflows and, more generally, to quasar environments. We determine velocity zero-points using the broad MgII emission line, and then measure the absorbers' quasar-frame velocity distribution. We examine the distribution of lines arising in quasar outflows by subtracting model fits to the contributions from cosmologically intervening absorbers and absorption due to the quasar host galaxy or cluster environment. We find a substantial number ($\ge 43\pm6$ per cent) of absorbers with REW $> 0.3$ Åin the velocity range +750 km/s $\la v \la $ +12000 km/s are intrinsic to the AGN outflow. This `outflow fraction' peaks near $v=+2000$ km/s with a value of $f_{outflow} \simeq 0.81 \pm 0.13$. At velocities below $v \approx +2000$ km/s the incidence of outflowing systems drops, possibly due to geometric effects or to the over-ionization of gas that is nearer the accretion disk. Furthermore, we find that outflow-absorbers are on average broader and stronger than cosmologically-intervening systems. Finally, we find that $\sim 14$ per cent of the quasars in our sample exhibit narrow, outflowing CIV absorption with REW $> 0.3$Å, slightly larger than that for broad absorption line systems.
We use 29 z>4 quasar spectra to build a homogeneous sample of high-redshift CIV absorbers. We use these data to calculate the number density, n(z), of W_rest(CIV)>0.30 A CIV doublets. We find that n(z) increases with time from z ~ 4.5. In addition, W_rest(CIV)>0.15 A CIV systems are more numerous than the former at all redshifts. On the contrary, n(z) of W_rest(MgII)>0.30 A MgII doublets decreases with time, in agreement with results from studies of LLS number densities. Below z<3, none of all the classes of absorbers show signs of evolution. We interpret this as the formation of galactic enve…
We present spectroscopic observations of the damped Ly-alpha absorber at redshift z=1.9342 seen in the spectrum of the quasar Q0151+048A. The redshift of the absorber is greater than the redshift of the quasar, so the system resembles the z(abs) ~ z(em) damped absorber at z=2.81 towards the quasar PKS0528-250. We have previously reported the detection of Ly-alpha emission from the latter absorber, one of only two damped absorbers for which Ly-alpha emission has unambiguously been detected. The resemblance between the PKS0528-250 and Q0151+048A systems is made closer by the detection of a weak …
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We used a sample of 17 Lyman limit systems with column density N_HI > 10^19 cm^-2 selected from 149 projected quasar pair sightlines, to investigate the clustering pattern of optically thick absorbers around luminous quasars at z ~ 2.5. Specifically, we measured the quasar-absorber correlation function in the transverse direction, and found a comoving correlation length of r_0=9.2_{+1.5}_{-1.7} Mpc/h (comoving) assuming a power law correlation …
A large, high-quality spectral data base of well-selected, moderate-redshift radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars is used to characterize the incidence of narrow associated CIV lambda 1549 absorption, and how this may depend on some quasar properties, including radio-type. Preliminary results of this study are presented.
We use the first data release of the 2-degree Field Quasar survey to investigate the effect of gravitational magnification by foreground absorbing systems on background quasars. We select two populations of quasars from this sample: one with strong MgII/FeII absorbers and one without. The selection is done in such a way that the two populations have the same redshift distribution and the absorber detection procedure discards possible biases with quasar magnitude. We then compare their magnitude distributions and find a relative excess of bright quasars with absorbers. This effect is detected a…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We search 149 moderate resolution background quasar spectra, from Gemini, Keck, the MMT, and the SDSS to survey Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) and Damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) in the vicinity of 1.8 < z < 4.0 luminous foreground quasars. A sample of 27 new quasar-absorber pairs is uncovered with column densities, 17.2 < log (N_HI/cm^2) < 20.9, and transverse (proper) distances of 22 kpc/h < R < 1.7 Mpc/h, from the foreground quasars. If they emit…
A statistical study is presented of (a) the frequency of narrow CIV lambda 1549 absorption lines in 1.5 <~ z <~ 3.6 radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars, and of (b) the UV and radio properties of the absorbed quasars. The quasar sample is unbiased with respect to absorption properties and the radio-quiet and radio-loud subsamples are well matched in redshift and luminosity. A similarly high incidence (>~50%) of narrow CIV absorbers is detected for the radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars, and a constant ~25% of all the quasars, irrespective of radio type display associated CIV absorbers stronger t…
We present 0.5-8.0 keV Chandra observations of six bright quasars that represent extrema in quasar emission-line properties -- three quasars each with small and large blueshifts of the CIV emission line with respect to the systemic redshift of the quasars. Supplemented with seven archival Chandra observations of quasars that met our selection criteria, we investigate the origin of this emission-line phenomenon in the general context of the structure of quasars. We find that the quasars with the largest CIV blueshifts show evidence, from joint-spectral fitting, for intrinsic X-ray absorption (N…
Prochter et al. 2006 recently found that the number density of strong intervening 0.5<z<2 MgII absorbers detected in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectra is nearly 4 times larger than in QSO spectra. We have conducted a similar study using CIV absorbers. Our CIV sample, consisting of a total of 20 systems, is drawn from 3 high resolution and high to moderate S/N VLT/UVES spectra of 3 long-duration GRB afterglows, covering the redshift interval 1.6< z<3.1. The column density distribution and number density of this sample do not show any statistical difference with the same quantities measure…
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3) we investigate how narrow (<700km/s) CIV and MgII quasar absorption line systems are distributed around quasars. The CIV absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the MgII absorbers in the range 0.4<z<2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines-of-sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are r_o~5h^-1Mpc, similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing…
Using a sample of 3814 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we confirm that high-ionization, broad, emission lines such as CIV are significantly blueshifted with respect to low-ionization, broad, emission lines such as MgII. CIV emission line peaks have a range of shifts from a redshift of 500 km/s to blueshifts well in excess of 2000 km/s as compared to MgII. We confirm previous results that suggest an anti-correlation between the shift of the CIV emission line peak and the rest equivalent width of the CIV emission line. Furthermore, using composite spectra, we are able to show that the…
In Keck HIRES spectra of 9 QSOs we identify a sample of 908 CIV absorber components in 188 systems outside the Lyman forest in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4.4, with related lines of SiIV, CII, SiII and NV. The properties of the CIV absorbers are almost constant with z. We find a mild increase in Omega(CIV) with decreasing z with a mean = (3.8+/-0.7)*10^(-8) (spatially flat LCDM cosmology and h = 0.71). Using Omega(b) from the CMB and ionization fractions from our data we obtain [C/H]_(z = 4.0) >/= -3.11(+0.14/-0.19) and [C/H]_(z = 2.1) >/= -2.64(+0.15/-0.22), suggesting a rise by about a fact…
CaII 3934,3969 absorbers, which are likely to be a subset of damped Lyman alpha systems, are the most dusty quasar absorbers known, with an order of magnitude more extinction in E(B-V) than other absorption systems. There is also evidence that CaII absorbers trace galaxies with more ongoing star-formation than the average quasar absorber. Despite this, relatively little is known in detail about these unusual absorption systems. Here we present the first high resolution spectroscopic study of 19 CaII quasar absorbers, in the range 0.6<= z_abs<=1.2, with W3934>=0.2A. Their general depletion patt…
We present XMM-Newton EPIC observations of warm absorbers in the quasars PG 1114+445 and PG 1309+355, both of which exhibit evidence for absorption by warm material in the line-of-sight. We find the absorption in PG 1114+445 to be in two phases, a `hot' phase with a log ionisation parameter xi of 2.57, and a `cooler' phase with log xi of 0.83; an unresolved transition array (UTA) of M-shell iron is observed in the cooler phase. The absorption in this quasar is similar to that observed in the Seyfert 1 NGC 3783. The absorption in PG 1309+355 consists of a single phase, with log xi of 1.87. The …
We establish a simple model for the distribution of cold gas around L* galaxies using a large set of observational constraints on the properties of strong MgII absorber systems. Our analysis suggests that the halos of L* galaxies are filled with cool gaseous clouds having sizes of order 1kpc and densities of ~10^{-2} cm^{-3}. We then investigate the physical effects of cloud irradiation by a quasar and study the resulting spectral signatures. We show that quasar activity gives rise to (i) extended narrow-line emission on ~100kpc scales and (ii) an anisotropy in the properties of the absorbing …
We conduct an ultraviolet (HST and FUSE) spectroscopic survey of HI (Lyman lines) and seven metal ions (OVI, NV, CIV, CIII, SiIV, SiIII, FeIII) in the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) at z<0.4. We analyzed 650 Lya absorbers over redshift pathlength Delta z=5.27, detecting numerous absorbers: 83 OVI systems, 39 CIII, 53 SiIII, 24 CIV, 24 NV, and so on. Our survey yields distributions in column density and estimates of the IGM baryon content and metallicities of C, N, O in the IGM. In the low-z IGM, we have accounted for ~40% of the baryons: 30% in the photoionized Lya forest and 10% in t…
In the z=1.94 CIV absorption line system in the spectrum of quasar Q1222+228 (z_em=2.04), we find two clouds which have contrasting physical conditions, although they are only at a 17 km/s velocity separation. In the first cloud SiII, SiIV, and CII are detected, and AlII and AlIII column density limits in conjunction with photoionization models allow us to infer that this cloud has a large Si abundance and a small Al abundance relative to a solar abundance pattern. This pattern resembles that of Galactic metal-poor halo stars, which must have formed from such high redshift gas. The second clou…
The physical state of the intergalactic medium can be probed in great detail with the intervening absorption systems seen in quasar spectra. The properties of the Hydrogen absorbers depend on many cosmological parameters, such as the matter-power spectrum, reionisation history, ionising background and the nature of the dark matter. The spectra also contain metal lines, which can be used to constrain the star formation history and the feedback processes acting in large and small galaxies. Simulations have been instrumental in investigating to what extent these parameters can be unambiguously co…
We investigate available constraints on the circumstellar medium (CSM) around long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) progenitors from afterglow spectra. We first establish a statistical sample of five GRB afterglow spectra that have been collected and analyzed with no prior knowledge of the line-of-sight properties. This sample is then adopted for a uniform search of Wolf-Rayet wind signatures, as represented by CIV 1548, 1550 absorption doublets at dv=-1000 to -5000 km/s from the GRBs (hereafter CIV_{15}). We report the detection of a single CIV_{15} absorber at dv ~ -1500 km/s from GRB 050730 a…
We have used the SEST 15-metre and Onsala 20-metre telescopes to perform deep (r.m.s. >~ 30 mJy) integrations of various molecular rotational transitions towards damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) known to occult millimetre-loud quasars. We have observed 6 new systems and improved the existing limits for 11 transitions. These limits may be approaching the sensitivities required to detect new systems and we present a small number of candidate systems which we believe warrant further observation.
Spectroscopy of ten quasars obtained with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is presented. A clustering analysis reveals an excess of nearest neighbor line pairs on velocity scales of 250-750 km/s at a 95-98% confidence level. The hypothesis that the absorbers are randomly distributed in velocity space can be ruled out at the 99.8% confidence level. No two-point correlation power is detected (xi < 1 with 95% confidence). Lyman-alpha absorbers have correlation amplitudes on scales of 250-500 km/s at least 4-5 times smaller than the correlation am…
I report the discovery of blueshifted broad absorption line (BAL) troughs in at least six transitions of the Balmer series of hydrogen (Hbeta to H9) and in CaII, MgII and excited FeII in the quasar SDSS J125942.80+121312.6. This is only the fourth active galactic nucleus known to exhibit Balmer absorption, all four in conjunction with low-ionization BAL systems containing excited Fe II. The substantial population in the n=2 shell of H I in this quasar's absorber likely arises from Ly-alpha trapping. In an absorber sufficiently optically thick to show Balmer absorption, soft X-rays from the qua…
We have carried out a high angular resolution near-infrared imaging study of the fields of 6 quasars with 7 strong absorption line systems at z < 0.5, using the Hokupa'a adaptive optics system and the QUIRC near-infrared camera on the Gemini-North telescope. These absorption systems include 4 classical damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), 2 sub-DLAs, and one Lyman-limit system. Images were obtained in the H or K' filters with FWHM between 0.2"-0.5" with the goal of detecting the absorbing galaxies and identifying their morphologies. Features are seen at projected separations of 0.5"-16.0" from…
We report the near-IR detection of a prominent CIV absorption in the rest-frame UV spectrum of the most distant known QSO, SDSS J104433.04-012502.2, at z=5.80. This QSO was recently observed with XMM-Newton and it was found to be notably X-ray weak. The equivalent width of the CIV absorption feature (~10 A) strongly supports the idea that the X-ray faintness of this QSO is due to heavy absorption by gas with a column density N_H > 10^{24} cm^-2. The shape of the CIV feature suggests that this is a Broad Absorption Line QSO. Although absorbed by a huge column of gas, the observed continuum in t…
The damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra are believed to be the progenitors of present-day disk galaxies. We examine the probability for microlensing of background quasars by stars in their DLAs. Microlensing by an individual star should magnify the continuum but not the broad emission lines of the quasars. Consequently, the equivalent width distribution of microlensed quasars would be distorted. We model a representative spiral galaxy as a closed system composed of a bulge, a disk, and a halo, and evolve the mass fraction of stars in the disk based on the observed metallicity…
The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we foun…
We present high resolution radio data at 3.5 and 20 cm from the VLA in the A configuration for 144 quasars with known CIV absorption line properties. Using these measurements, we compare and contrast a number of quasar orientation indicators. These quantities are used to study the velocity distribution of CIV absorption lines as a function of quasar orientation measures. That there is an excess of narrow, high-velocity CIV absorbers in flat-spectrum quasars as compared to steep-spectrum quasars is confirmed. Orientation indicators that are not based upon spectral indices (e.g. R_V and the core…
The red quasar 3C 212 (z=1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C 212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ~4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column N_H ~ 4 x 10^21 cm^-2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionizati…
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
Assuming there is a blazar type continuum in every radio-loud quasar, we find that the free-free heating due to the beamed infrared continuum can greatly enhance collisionally excited lines, and thus explain the stronger CIV $λ$1549 line emission observed in radio loud quasars. We further predict that the CIV line should show variability {\it not} associated with observed continuum or Ly$α$ variability.
The largest known structure in the high redshift universe is mapped by at least 18 quasars and spans ~5 deg x 2.5 deg on the sky, with a quasar spatial overdensity of 6-10 times above the mean. This large quasar group provides an extraordinary laboratory ~100 x 200 x 200 h^-3 comoving Mpc^3 in size (q0=0.5, Lambda=0, H0=100h km/s/Mpc) covering 1.20<z<1.39 in redshift. One approach to establish how LQGs relate to mass (galaxy) enhancements is to probe their gas content and distribution via background quasars. We have found the large quasar group to be associated with 11 MgII absorption systems …
One way to characterize and understand HI-selected galaxies is to study their metallicity properties. In particular, we show that the metallicity of absorbers is a bivariate function of the HI column density (NHI) and the MgII equivalent width (Wr(2796)). Thus, a selection upon Wr(2796) is not equivalent to a HI selection for intervening absorbers. A direct consequence for damped absorbers with NHI>20.3 from the bivariate metallicity distribution is that any correlation between the metallicity [X/H] and velocity width (or Wr(2796)) arises from the HI cut and therefore can not be interpreted as…
We propose a method for detecting gravitational magnification of distant sources, like quasars, due to absorber systems detected in their spectra. We first motivate the use of metal absorption lines rather than Lyman-alpha lines, then we show how to relate the observed moments of the source magnitude distribution to the mass distribution of absorbers. In order to illustrate the feasibility of the method, we use a simple model to estimate the amplitude of the effect expected for MgII absorption lines, and show that their lensing signal might already be detectable in large surveys like the SDSS.…
We have conducted observations of the environment around the z=2.15 radio loud quasar 1550-269 in search of distant galaxies associated either with it or the z=2.09 CIV absorber along its line of sight. Such objects will be distinguished by their red colours, R-K > 4.5. We find five such objects in a 1.5 arcmin^2 field around the quasar, with typical K' magnitudes of ~20.4 and no detected R band emission. We also find a sixth object with K=19.6 +/- 0.3, and undetected at R, just two arcseconds from the quasar. The nature of all these objects is currently unclear, and will remain so until we ha…
We present evidence for X-ray absorption by ionized oxygen in ASCA spectra of the prototype infrared quasar IRAS 13349+2438. This powerful (2E46 erg/s) quasar was studied in detail with ROSAT, and the combination of the X-ray data and optical/near-infrared spectropolarimetry strongly suggested the presence of a dusty ionized (`warm') absorber along the line of sight to the central X-ray source. The ASCA spectra, in contrast to an earlier claim, show evidence for ionized oxygen edges, and the presence of such edges appears to provide the most physically plausible interpretation of the data. Thu…
Recent observations suggest the incidence of strong intervening MgII absorption systems along the line-of-sight to gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows is significantly higher than expected from analogous quasar sightlines. One possible explanation is a geometric effect, arising because MgII absorbers only partially cover the quasar continuum regions, in which case MgII absorbers must be considerably smaller than previous estimates. We investigate the production of abnormal absorption profiles by partial coverage and conclude that the lack of any known anomalous profiles in observed systems, whils…

During the course of Hamburg/CfA Bright Quasar Survey we discovered a bright (B=15.9), high redshift (z=2.51) quasar HS 1603+3820. The quasar has a rich complex of CIV absorbers, containing at least five systems, all within 3000 km/s from one another. Despite large ejection velocity (v(ej)>5000 km/s for all components) the complex is likely to be associated with the quasar. There are at least three more associated heavy element absorbers, two of which have z(abs)>z(em). Together, they make one of the richest known complexes of associated heavy element absorbers, and the richest in objects with…
Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers are believed to be associated with galactic disks. We show that gravitational lensing can therefore affect the statistics of these systems. First, the magnification bias due to lensing raises faint QSOs above a given magnitude threshold and thereby enhances the probability for observing damped absorption systems. Second, the bending of light rays from the source effectively limits the minimum impact parameter of the line-of-sight relative to the center of the absorber, thus providing an upper cut-off to the observed neutral hydrogen (HI) column density. The combina…
(abridged) Aims. To reconstruct the spectral shape of the quasar ionizing radiation in the extreme-UV range (1Ryd <= E < 10Ryd) from the analysis of narrow absorption lines (NAL) of the associated systems. Methods. Computational technique for inverse spectroscopic problems - Monte Carlo Inversion augmented by procedure of the spectral shape recovering and modified to account for the incomplete coverage of the light source. Results. The ionizing spectra responsible for the ionization structure of the NAL systems require an intensity depression at E > 4Ryd which is attributed to the HeII Lyman c…
We have carried out a survey to search for hidden blazars in a sample of $z{\sim}2$ radio-loud quasars. The idea is based on our prediction that we should be able to see large CIV line variability not associated with observed continuum variations or most other emission lines in every radio-loud quasar. Here we report the initial results including the discovery of large CIV line variations in two quasars.
(Abridged) We present computations of the metals photoionization structures of pressure supported gas clouds in gravitationally dominant DM minihalos in the extended Galactic halo or LG environment. We consider low-metallicity (0.1-0.3 solar) clouds that are photoionized by the metagalactic radiation field, and which are pressure-confined by a hot external medium. We study the properties of LCDM Burkert (and NFW) minihalos with circular velocities 12-30 km/s. We present results for the volume densities and projected column densities of low-ions, CII, NI, OI, SiII and SII, produced in the neutr…
The z=0.9902 system along the quasar PG 1634+706 line of sight is a strong MgII absorber (W(2796)>0.3A) with only weak CIV absorption (it is ``CIV-deficient''). To study this system, we used high-resolution spectra from both HST/STIS (R=30,000) and Keck/HIRES (R=45,000). These spectra cover key transitions, such as MgI, MgII, FeII, SiII, CII, SiIII, CIII, SiIV, and CIV. Assuming a Haardt and Madau extragalactic background spectrum, we modeled the system with a combination of photoionization and collisional ionization. Based on a comparison of synthetic spectra to the data profiles, we infer th…
Moderate resolution spectra have been recorded for a sample of radio-selected QSOs (z=2.5) discovered in the ``Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters'' (FIRST) VLA survey. This work is motivated by the study of a heterogeneous set of QSO absorption line spectra that showed that as many as 36% of the absorbers normally thought to be intergalactic are correlated with physical properties of the background QSO, including the radio source spectral index. Spectra were taken for 24 newly discovered quasars in order to test this finding on a more homogeneous data set. The spectra have bee…
We describe the first optical survey of absorption systems associated with galaxy clusters at z= 0.3-0.9. We have cross-correlated SDSS DR3 quasars with high-redshift cluster/group candidates from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey. We have found 442 quasar-cluster pairs for which the MgII doublet might be detected at a transverse (physical) distance d<2 Mpc from the cluster centers. To investigate the incidence (dN/dz) and equivalent-width distribution n(W) of MgII systems at cluster redshifts, two statistical samples were drawn out of these pairs: one made of high-resolution spectroscopic quasa…
Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), seen in absorption against a background quasar, provide the most detailed probes available of element abundances in the Universe over > 90 % of its age. DLAs can be used to observationally measure the global mean metallicity in the Universe and its evolution with time. Paradoxically, these observations are more difficult at lower redshifts, where the absorber rest-frame UV spectra are cut-off due to the atmospheric absorption. We present here high-resolution VLT/UVES observations of several elements contained in three DLAs and one sub-DLA with 0.6<z_abs<0.9…
The metallicity in portions of high-redshift galaxies has been successfully measured thanks to the gas observed in absorption in the spectra of quasars, in the Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). Surprisingly, the global mean metallicity derived from DLAs is about 1/10th solar at 0<z<4 leading to the so-called ``missing-metals problem''. In this paper, we present high-resolution observations of a sub-DLA system at z_abs=0.716 with super-solar metallicity toward SDSS J1323-0021. This is the highest metallicity intervening quasar absorber currently known, and is only the second super-solar absorb…
The unified picture of X-ray/UV absorbers offers an unique opportunity to probe the nuclear environment of AGNs. To test the unified absorber scenario and to understand the physical properties of the absorber we obtained the first UV spectrum of PG1114+445, using HST FOS. PG1114+445 is known to have an X-ray ionized (``warm'') absorber, so that UV absorption is predicted. The HST spectrum clearly shows strong UV absorption lines due to Lya, CIV and NV, blueshifted by ~600 km/s with respect to the quasar redshift. Since both X-ray and UV absorbers are rare in radio-quiet quasars, these observat…
We have re-analyzed the X-ray spectra of the gravitational lensed high-redshift BAL QSO APM 08279+5255, observed with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. Previous studies (Hasinger et al. 2002; Chartas et al. 2002) detected unusual, highly-ionized iron absorption features, but differed in their interpretation of these features, regarding the kinematical and ionization structure. We seek one physical model that can be successfully applied to both observations. For the first time we have performed detailed photoionization modeling on the X-ray spectrum of APM 08279+5255. The absorbing gas …
We have carried out a deep narrow-band imaging survey of six fields with heavy-element quasar absorption lines, using the Goddard Fabry-Perot (FP) system at the Apache Point Observatory (APO) 3.5-meter telescope. The aim of these observations was to search for redshifted Ly-$α$ emission from the galaxies underlying the absorbers at $z = 2.3-2.5$ and their companion galaxies. The 3 $σ$ sensitivity levels ranged between $1.9 \times 10^{-17}$ and $5.4 \times 10^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in observed-frame Ly-$α$ flux. No significant Ly-$α$ emitters were detected at $> 3 σ$ level. The absence o…
HE0141-3932 (zem=1.80) is a bright blue radio-quite quasar which reveals an emission line spectrum with an unusually weak Ly-alpha line. In addition, large redshift differences (Delta z=0.05) are observed between high ionization and low ionization emission lines. Absorption systems identified at z=1.78, 1.71, and 1.68 show mild oversolar metallicities (Z ~= 1-2Zsolar) and can be attributed to the associated gas clouds ejected from the circumnuclear region. The joint analysis of the emission and absorption lines leads to the conclusion that this quasar is seen almost pole-on. Its apparent lumin…
We study metal line absorption of CIV, CII, SiIV, and NV at redshifts z=3.5 to z=2 within the framework of a cosmological model for the Lyman alpha forest, comparing the results of numerical simulations to recent observations by Songaila & Cowie (1996, SC). In agreement with Rauch, Haehnelt & Steinmetz (1996), we find that the observed mean value of the CIV/HI ratio around z=3 is reproduced if a uniform metallicity of [C/H] = -2.5 is assumed in our model, but that the observed scatter in this ratio is larger than predicted, implying a scatter in the metallicity of the absorbing systems of roug…
Using a large sample of MgII absorbers with 0.4<z<2.2 detected by Nestor et al (2005) in the Early Data Release of the SDSS, we present new constraints on the physical properties of these systems based on two statistical analyses: (i) By computing the ratio between the composite spectra of quasars with and without absorbers, we measure the reddening effects induced by these intervening systems; and (ii) by stacking SDSS images centered on quasars with strong MgII absorption lines and isolating the excess light around the PSF, we measure the mean luminosity and colors of the absorbing galaxies.…
Recent observations of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars demonstrated that the soft X-ray emission of these objects is extremely weak and convincing evidence for very strong absorption by a high column density (~ 10^23.5 cm^-2) was obtained for PG 1411+442, even though it is one of the few BAL QSOs strongly detected in soft X-rays. This paper examines the ionization status and geometry of the X-ray absorber by combining the properties of the UV lines with the X-ray continuum absorption. We show that the gas has to have large column densities in ions of major UV absorption lines, such as CIV,…
We have obtained spectroscopy of Q 1343+266 AB, a pair of quasars at redshift z = 2.03 with a projected separation of 9.5 arcseconds. This system is well-suited for probing the Ly-alpha forest, since the two component spectra show several Ly-alpha lines in common and several others not. Using Bayesian statistics, under the idealization of uniform-radius spherical absorbers, we find that the Ly-alpha cloud radius at $z \approx 1.8$ lies in the range $40\hkpc < R < 280 \hkpc$ with $98\%$ confidence in a $(Ω_o, Λ_o) = (1, 0)$ model universe, where $h =(H_o / 100 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1})$. The median v…
Eighteen candidates for emission line galaxies were discovered in a narrow-band infrared survey that targeted the redshifts of damped Lyman-alpha or metal lines in the spectra of quasars. The presence of emission lines is inferred from the photometric magnitudes in narrow and broad band interference filters, corresponding to H-alpha at redshifts of 0.89 (6 objects) and 2.4 (10 objects), and [OII] at a redshift of 2.3 (2 objects). Most of the candidates are small resolved objects, compatible with galaxies at the redshifts of the absorbers. Because a similar survey targeted at the redshifts of q…
We present an analysis of our Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) observation of the quasar MR2251-178. The warm absorber of MR2251-178 is well described by a hydrogen column density, N_H~2x10^21 cm^-2, and an ionization parameter log(xi)~0.6. We find in the spectrum weak evidence for narrow absorption lines from Carbon and Nitrogen which indicate that the ionized material is in outflow. We note changes (in time) of the absorption structure in the band (0.6-1) keV (around the UTAs plus the OVII and OVIII K-edges) at different periods of the observation. We measure a (0…
We present evidence that the high-velocity CIV lambda 1549 emission line gas of radio-loud quasars may originate in a disk-like configuration, in close proximity to the accretion disk often assumed to emit the low-ionization lines. For a sample of 36 radio-loud z~2 quasars we find the 20--30% peak width to show significant inverse correlations with the fractional radio core-flux density, R, the radio axis inclination indicator. Highly inclined systems have broader line wings, consistent with a high-velocity field perpendicular to the radio axis. By contrast, the narrow line-core shows no such …
We report on a survey for strong (rest equivalent width W_r >= 1A), intervening MgII systems along the sightlines to long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The GRB spectra which comprise the survey have a heterogeneous mix of resolution and wavelength coverage, but we implement a strict, uniform set of search criteria to derive a well-defined statistical sample. We identify 15 strong MgII absorbers along 14 GRB sightlines (nearly every sightline exhibits at least one absorber) with spectra covering a total pathlength Delta z = 15.5 at a mean redshift <z> = 1.1. In contrast, the predicted incid…
We present photoionization calculations for the spatially-extended absorbers observed towards the extended emission line spectrum of two high-redshift radio galaxies: 0943-242 (z=2.922) and 0200+015 (z=2.230), with the aim of reproducing the absorber column ratio, N(CIV)/N(HI). We explore the effects of using different UV continua in the photoionization calculations. A comparison is drawn between the absorber in 0200+015 and the two absorbers in the lensed Lynx Arc Nebula at z=3.36, which present similar N(CIV)/N(HI) ratios. We find that hot stars from a powerful starburst, or a metagalactic b…
