We present an analysis of our Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) observation of the quasar MR2251-178. The warm absorber of MR2251-178 is well described by a hydrogen column density, N_H~2x10^21 cm^-2, and an ionization parameter log(xi)~0.6. We find in the spectrum weak evidence for narrow absorption lines from Carbon and Nitrogen which indicate that the ionized material is in outflow. We note changes (in time) of the absorption structure in the band (0.6-1) keV (around the UTAs plus the OVII and OVIII K-edges) at different periods of the observation. We measure a (0.1-2) keV flux of 2.58x10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1. This flux implies that the nuclear source of MR2251-178 is in a relatively low state. No significant variability is seen in the light curve. We do not find evidence for an extra cold material in the line of sight, and set an upper limit of N_H~1.2x10^20 cm^-2. The X-ray spectrum does not appear to show evidence for dusty material, though an upper limit in the neutral carbon and oxygen column densities can only be set to N_CI~2x10^19 cm^-2 and N_OI~9x10^19 cm^-2, respectively.
The X-ray luminous RS CVn binary system HR 1099 has been observed on several occasions in the early phases of \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM-Newton}. A very hot (up to 40 MK) dominant coronal plasma has been identified from the high-resolution spectroscopic data; cooler plasma is seen down to about 3 MK. We recently obtained 100 ksec in \textit{Chandra}'s Guest Observer Program to study the corona of HR 1099 with the High-Resolution Camera (HRC-S) and the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) across the complete temperature range above 1 MK. The data provide an unprecedented view of spectra…
In this paper, we analyze spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 obtained with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS), the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the European Photon Imaging Camera's (EPIC) onboard of XMM-Newton. The two observations were separated by ~7 months. In the LETGS spectrum we detect a highly ionized warm absorber corresponding to an ionization state of 400x10^{-9} W m, visible as a depression at 10-18 Å. This depression is formed by multiple weak Fe and Ne lines. A much smaller column density was found for the lowly ionized warm absorbe…
The absolute calibration of space-borne instruments in the soft X-ray regime rests strongly on model spectra of hot white dwarfs. We analyze the Chandra LETG+HRC-S observations of the white dwarfs HZ43 A and Sirius B and of the neutron star RX J185635-3754 in order to resolve current uncertainties in the soft X-ray spectral fluxes and photospheric parameters of the three stars. We have obtained improved parameters for which fit the observations from the optical to the soft X-ray regime. Our approach allows us to quote their absolute spectral fluxes at selected wavelengths which may aid the cal…
We present the Chandra LETGS X-ray spectrum of the nearby (~60 pc) neutron star RX J1856.5-3754. Detailed spectral analysis of the combined X-ray and optical data rules out the nonmagnetic neutron star atmosphere models with hydrogen, helium, iron and solar compositions. We also conclude that strongly magnetized atmosphere models are unable to represent the data. The data can be explained with a two-component blackbody model. The harder component with temperature of kT_bb~63 eV and a radius R_bb~2.2 km of the emitting region well fits the X-ray data and can be interpreted as radiation from a h…
We report preliminary results on the detection of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) along the line of sight toward the blazar 1ES 1028+511 (z = 0.361). 1ES 1028+511 was observed for 150 ks with the low energy transmission grating in combination with the high resolution camera onboard Chandra. An additional 300 ks observation was obtained using the reflection grating spectrometers (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We report the detection of three absorption lines which can be attributed to the WHIM, and compare the results with theoretical predictions.
We discuss the results from deep Chandra LETG observations of the supernova remnant 1987A (SNR 1987A). We find that a distribution of shocks, spanning the same range of velocities (from 300 to 1700 km/s) as deduced in the first part of our analysis (Zhekov et al. 2005, ApJL, 628, L127), can account for the entire X-ray spectrum of this object. The post-shock temperature distribution is bimodal, peaking at kT 0.5 and 3 keV. Abundances inferred from the X-ray spectrum have values similar to those for the inner circumstellar ring, except that the abundances of nitrogen and oxygen are approximatel…
We probe the relationship between surface magnetic fields and the X-ray emitting corona in the rapidly rotating star AB Dor. Circularly polarised spectra have been inverted to produce a surface (photospheric) magnetic field map. This surface map has been extrapolated to model AB Dor's coronal field topology and X-ray light curve. Chandra/LETG light curves of AB Dor from the same epoch show intrinsic variability at the 30% level. Period analysis indicates a fraction of this is due to rotational modulation. We measure velocity shifts in emission line centroids as a function of rotation period an…
We find resolved interstellar O K, Ne K, and Fe L absorption spectra in the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer spectrum of the low mass X-ray binary X0614+091. We measure the column densities in O and Ne, and find direct spectroscopic constraints on the chemical state of the interstellar O. These measurements probably probe a low-density line of sight through the Galaxy and we discuss the results in the context of our knowledge of the properties of interstellar matter in regions between the spiral arms.
We present an extended analysis of the deep Chandra LETG and HETG observations of the supernova remnant 1987A (SNR 1987A) carried out in 2007. The global fits to the grating spectra show that the temperature of the X-ray emitting plasma in the slower shocks in this system has remained stable for the last three years, while that in the faster shocks has decreased. This temperature evolution is confirmed by the first light curves of strong X-ray emission lines and their ratios. On the other hand, bulk gas velocities inferred from the X-ray line profiles are too low to account for the post-shock …
We present the Chandra-LETGS analysis of Mrk 279, a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy. The spectrum shows a variety of features arising from different physical environments in the vicinity of the black hole. We detect three absorption components, located at the redshift of the source. One of them is likely to arise from the host galaxy. An additional component due to absorption by a collisionally ionized gas at z=0 is also observed. Such an absorption can be produced in the outskirts of our Galaxy or in the local group. The emission spectrum is rich in narrow and broad emission features. We tested the h…
We present for the first time a high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert galaxy. The Chandra-LETGS spectrum of NGC 5548 shows strong, narrow absorption lines from highly ionised species (the H-like and He-like ions of C, N, O, Ne, Na, Mg, Si, as well as Fe XIV--XXI). The lines are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The corresponding continuum absorption edges are weak or absent. The absorbing medium can be modelled by an outflowing, thin and warm shell in photoionization equilibrium. The absorption lines are similar to lower ionization absorption lines observed in the UV, although these UV …
We present new observations on PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETG), using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We confirm the detection of an absorption line plausibly identified as OVIII Ly-alpha from the warm-hot intergalactic medium associated with a small group of galaxies along the line of sight, as originally reported by Fang et al. 2002 (here after FANG02). Combining the previous observations in FANG02 and five new, long observations on the same target, we increase the total exposure time by a factor of three, and the total counts p…
We present a combined analysis of the X-ray emission of the Capella corona obtained with \textit{XMM-Newton} RGS, \textit{Chandra} HETGS, and LETGS. An improved atomic line database and a new differential emission measure (DEM) deconvolution method are developed for this purpose. Our new atomic database is based on the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database and incorporates improved calculations of ionization equilibrium and line emissivities for L-shell ions of abundant elements using the Flexible Atomic Code. The new DEM deconvolution method uses a Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) technique w…
We present high-resolution soft-X-ray spectra of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, taken with XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra LETGS. Its rich emission-line spectrum is dominated by recombination in a warm plasma (bright, narrow radiative recombination continua provide the ``smoking gun''), which is photoionized by the inferred nuclear power-law continuum. Radiative decay following photoexcitation of resonant transitions is also significant. A self-consistent model of an irradiated cone of gas is capable of reproducing the hydrogenic/heliumlike ionic line series in detail. The radial ioni…
V4743 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2002 No. 3) was discovered on 20 September 2002. We obtained a 5ks ACIS-S spectrum in November 2002 and found that the nova was faint in X-rays. We then obtained a 25ks CHANDRA LETGS observation on 19 March 2003. By this time, it had evolved into the Super Soft X-ray phase exhibiting a continuous spectrum with deep absorption features. The light curve from the observation showed large amplitude oscillations with a period of 1325s (22min) followed by a decline in total count rate after ~13ks of observations. The count rate dropped from ~40cts/s to practically zero within ~6k…
We have undertaken deep, high-resolution observations of SN 1987A at ~20 years after its explosion with the Chandra HETG and LETG spectrometers. Here we present the HETG X-ray spectra of SN 1987A having unprecedented spectral resolution and signal-to-noise in the 6 A to 20 A bandpass, which includes the H-like and He-like lines of Si, Mg, Ne, as well as O VIII lines and bright Fe XVII lines. In joint analysis with LETG data, we find that there has been a significant decrease from 2004 to 2007 in the average temperature of the highest temperature component of the shocked-plasma emission. Model …
We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of GRB 020405 obtained with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory starting 1.68 days after the burst. The spectrum appears featureless, with no evidence for emission lines, absorption edges, or narrow radiative recombination continua. The continuum can be fitted by a power law of photon index Gamma = 1.72 +/- 0.21 and temporal decay index alpha = 1.87 +/- 0.1, with a marginally significant excess column density of cold gas N_{H}=(4.7 +/- 3.7) x 10^{21} cm^{-2} at the redshift of the host gal…
We present an analysis of ten cool stars (Algol, Capella, Procyon, Eps Eri, Alpha Cen A&B, UX Ari, AD Leo, YY Gem, and HR1099) observed with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This sample contains all cools stars observed with the LETGS presently available to us with integration times sufficiently long to warrant a meaningful spectral analysis. Our sample comprises inactive, moderately active, and hyperactive stars and samples the bulk part of activity levels encountered in coronal X-ray sources. We use the LETGS spectra to carry ou…
We present high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of two recent GRB afterglows observed with the Low Energy Transmission Gratings on Chandra. The afterglows to GRBs 030328 and 041006 are detected beginning 15.33 and 16.8 hours after each burst, respectively, and are observed to fade in time during each ~90 ksec observation. We fit for the continuum emission in each full data set and for the data sliced into half and quarter time sections. For both afterglows, the continuum emission is well described by an absorbed power-law model, and the model parameters describing the absorption and spectral slo…
We present a Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279. This observation was carried out simultaneously with HST-STIS and FUSE, in the context of a multiwavelength study of this source. The Chandra pointings were spread over ten days for a total exposure time of ~360 ks. The spectrum of Mrk279 shows evidence of broad emission features, especially at the wavelength of the OVII triplet. We quantitatively explore the possibility that this emission is produced in the broad line region (BLR). We modeled the broad UV emission lines seen in the FUSE and HST-STIS spectra following the …
A high-resolution spectrum obtained with the low-energy transmission grating onboard the Chandra observatory is presented and analyzed. Our analysis indicates very hot plasma with temperatures up to T=15-20MK from the continuum and from ratios of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of Si, Mg, and Ne. In addition lower temperature material is present since OVII and NVI are detected. Two methods for density diagnostics are applied. The He-like triplets from NVII to SiXIII are used and densities around 10^11 cm^-3 are found for the low temperature ions. Taking the UV radiation field from the B sta…
Electron density diagnostics based on the triplets of Helium-like CV, NVI, and OVII are applied to the X-ray spectra of Capella and Procyon measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. New theoretical models for the calculation of the line ratios between the forbidden (f), intercombination (i), and the resonance (r) lines of the helium-like triplets are used. The derived densities are quite typical of densities found in the solar active regions, and also pressures and temperatures in Procyon's and Capella's corona at a level of …
We present the first X-ray spectrum obtained by the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum is of Capella and covers a wavelength range of 5-175 A (2.5-0.07 keV). The measured wavelength resolution, which is in good agreement with ground calibration, is $Δλ\simeq$ 0.06 A (FWHM). Although in-flight calibration of the LETGS is in progress, the high spectral resolution and unique wavelength coverage of the LETGS are well demonstrated by the results from Capella, a coronal source rich in spectral emission lines. While the primary purp…
We study the absorption and emission properties of the photoionised gas near one of the brightest and most variable AGN, the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051, in order to constrain the geometry, dynamics and ionisation structure of the outflow. We analyse two observations taken with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) of Chandra. We study the spectra of both observations and investigate the spectral response to a sudden, long-lasting flux decrease of a factor of 5 that occurred during the second observation. We confirm the preliminary detection of a highly ionised component with an…
Electron density diagnostics based on a line intensity ratio of Si X are applied to the X-ray spectra of Procyon, $α$ Cen A$&$B, Capella and $ε$ Eri measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) combined with High-resolution Camera (HRC) on board the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The ratio $R_1$ of the intensities of the Si X lines at 50.524 Åand 50.691 Åis adopted. A certain of the temperature effect in $R_1$ appears near the low-density limit region, which is due to the contamination of Si X line at 50.703 Å. Using the emission measure distribution (EMD) model der…
Using the combined spectral and spatial resolving power of the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETGS) on board Chandra, we obtain separate spectra from the bright central source of NGC 1068 (Primary region), and from a fainter bright spot 4" to the NE (Secondary region). Both spectra are dominated by line emission from H- and He-like ions of C through S, and from Fe L-shell ions, but also include narrow radiative recombination continua, indicating that most of the soft X-ray emission arises in low-temperature (kT few eV) photoionized plasma. We confirm the conclusions of Kinkhabwala et al. (2…
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
We report the analysis of the high-resolution soft X-ray spectrum of the nearby F-type star Procyon in the wavelength range from 5 to 175 Angstrom obtained with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board Chandra and with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) and the EPIC-MOS CCD spectrometers on board XMM-Newton. Line fluxes have been measured separately for the RGS and LETGS. Spectra have been fitted globally to obtain self-consistent temperatures, emission measures, and abundances. The total volume emission measure is ~4.1 x 10e50/cm3 with a peak between 1 and 3 M…
The red quasar 3C 212 (z=1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C 212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ~4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column N_H ~ 4 x 10^21 cm^-2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionizati…
We study the variability of the warm absorber and the gas responsible for the emission lines in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, in order to constrain the location and physical properties of these components. Using X-ray spectra taken with the \textit{Chandra}$-$LETGS in 2002 and 2005, we study variability in the ionic column densities and line intensities. We find a lower \ion{O}{vii} forbidden emission line flux in 2005, while the Fe K$α$ line flux stays constant. The warm absorber is less ionized in 2005, allowing us to constrain its location to within 7 pc of the central source. Using both t…
H1504+65 is an extremely hot hydrogen-deficient white dwarf with an effective temperature close to 200,000 K. We present new FUV and soft X-ray spectra obtained with FUSE and Chandra, which confirm that H1504+65 has an atmosphere primarily composed of carbon and oxygen. The Chandra LETG spectrum (60-160 Angstroem) shows a wealth of photospheric absorption lines from highly ionized oxygen, neon, and - for the first time identified in this star - magnesium and suggests relatively high Ne and Mg abundances. This corroborates an earlier suggestion that H1504+65 represents a naked C/O stellar core …
We report the first results from deep X-ray observations of the SNR 1987A with the Chandra LETG. Temperatures inferred from line ratios range from 0.1 - 2 keV and increase with ionization potential. Expansion velocities inferred from X-ray line profiles range from 300 - 1700 km/s, much less than the velocities inferred from the radial expansion of the radio and X-ray images. We can account for these observations with a scenario in which the X-rays are emitted by shocks produced where the supernova blast wave strikes dense protrusions of the inner circumstellar ring, which are also responsible …
We use the PHOENIX code package to model the X-ray spectrum of Nova V4743 Sagittarii observed with the LETGS onboard the Chandra satellite on 19 March 2003. To analyze nova atmospheres and related systems with an underlying nuclear burning envelope at X-ray wavelengths, it was necessary to update the code with new microphysics. We demonstrate that the X-ray emission is dominated by thermal bremsstrahlung and that the hard X-rays are dominated by Fe and N absorption. Preliminary models are calculated assuming solar abundances. It is shown that the models can be used to determine element abundan…
We present soft X-ray results from observations with the Chandra HETGS of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with Chandra and HST/STIS. We also briefly discuss the possibility of absorption due to neutral Fe embedded in the warm absorber of NGC 4593 versus an interpretation of the data in terms soft X-ray relativi…
The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory is suffering a gradual loss of low energy sensitivity due to a buildup of a contaminant. High resolution spectra of bright astrophysical sources using the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) have been analyzed in order to determine the nature of the contaminant by measuring the absorption edges. The dominant element in the contaminant is carbon. Edges due to oxygen and fluorine are also detectable. Excluding H, we find that C, O, and F comprise >80%, 7%, and 7% of the contaminant by number, r…
We use the PHOENIX code package to model the X-ray spectrum of Nova V4743 Sagittarii observed with the LETGS onboard the Chandra satellite on March 2003. Our atmosphere models are 1D spherical, expanding, line blanketed, and in full NLTE. To analyze nova atmospheres and related systems with an underlying nuclear burning envelope at X-ray wavelengths, it was necessary to update the code with new microphysics, as discussed in this paper. We demonstrate that the X-ray emission is dominated by thermal bremsstrahlung and that the hard X-rays are dominated by Fe and N absorption. The best fit to the…
Observations of warm absorbers provided new ways to study the nuclear environments of AGNs. I discuss basic properties of warm absorbers and early developments with ROSAT, ASCA and HST observations. I briefly touch upon recent advances made with Chandra and FUSE.
We report on the morphological and spectral evolution of SNR 1987A from the monitoring observations with the Chandra/ACIS. As of 2005, the X-ray-bright lobes are continuously brightening and expanding all around the ring. The softening of the overall X-ray spectrum also continues. The X-ray lightcurve is particularly remarkable: i.e., the recent soft X-ray flux increase rate is significantly deviating from the model which successfully fits the earlier data, indicating even faster flux increase rate since early 2004 (day ~6200). We also report results from high resolution spectral analysis with…
The Chandra HETGS spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 show numerous narrow, unresolved (FWHM < 200 km/s) absorption lines from a wide range of ionization states of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S, Ar, and Fe. The initial analysis of these data, presented in Lee et al. (2001), shows that a dusty warm absorber model adequately explains the spectral features > 0.48 keV (< 26 A). We attribute previous reports of an apparently highly redshifted O VII edge to the neutral Fe L absorption complex and the O VII resonance series (by transitions higher than He $γ$; He $α,β,γ$ are also seen at lower energies…
We present the results of the first X-ray gratings spectroscopy observations of a planetary nebula (PN), the X-ray-bright, young BD+30 3639. We observed BD+30 3639 for a total of 300 ks with the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Low Energy Transmission Gratings in combination with its Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer(LETG/ACIS-S). The LETG/ACIS-S spectrum of BD+30 3639 is dominated by H-like resonance lines of O viii and C sc vi and the He-like triplet line complexes of Ne ix and O vii. Other H-like resonance lines, such as N vii, as well as lines of highly ionized Fe, are weak or absent. Continuum…
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 simultaneously with Chandra/HETG, HST/STIS and RXTE. We measure strong absorption lines from He-like Ne and Mg, and from H-like N, O, and Ne. The lines are unresolved except for Ne Lya and Ne IX(r). The absorption-line profiles are blueshifted by ~200 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of Mrk 509, and there is a hint of another component near systemic. The soft X-ray spectrum can be described in remarkable detail with a simple, single-zone photoionized absorber with a column density of 2.06 (+0.39,-0.45) x 10^21 cm^-2 and an ionization parameter…
This paper presents results from spectral observations of Ton S180 using Chandra and ASCA. The data confirm the presence of the soft excess but the Chandra LETG spectrum reveals it to be broad and smooth, rather than resolved into individual emission lines. This excess may represent either a primary or reprocessed continuum component or a blend of broad lines from an ionized accretion disk. The occurrence of a similar feature in five other NLSy1s leads us to conclude that this soft X-ray component may be a characteristic of sources accreting at a very high rate. The X-ray spectrum shows no evi…
We present preliminary results from the first X-ray gratings spectrometer observations of a planetary nebula (PN). We have used the Chandra X-ray Observatory Low Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrometer (LETGS) to observe the bright, diffuse X-ray source within the well-studied BD +30 3639. The LETGS spectrum of BD +30 3639 displays prominent and well-resolved emission lines of H-like C, O, and Ne and He-like O and Ne. Initial modeling indicates a plasma temperature T_x ~ 2.5x10^6 K and abundance ratios of C/O ~ 20, N/O <~ 1, Ne/O ~ 4, and Fe/O <~ 0.1. These results suggest that the X-ray-emi…
We report results from Chandra observations of the X-ray jet of 3C~273 during the calibration phase in 2000 January. The zeroeth-order images and spectra from two 40-ks exposures with the HETG and LETG+ACIS-S show a complex X-ray structure. The brightest optical knots are detected and resolved in the 0.2-8 keV energy band. The X-ray morphology tracks well the optical. However, while the X-ray brightness decreases along the jet, the outer parts of the jet tend to be increasingly bright with increasing wavelength. The spectral energy distributions of four selected regions can best be explained b…
We observed the Galactic black hole GX 339-4 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) for 75 ksec during the decline of its 2002-2003 outburst. The sensitivity of this observation provides an unprecedented glimpse of a Galactic black hole at about a tenth of the luminosity of the outburst peak. The continuum spectrum is well described by a model consisting of multicolor disk blackbody (kT = 0.6 keV) and power-law (Gamma = 2.5) components. X-ray reflection models yield improved fits. A strong, relativistic Fe K-alpha emission line is revealed, indicating that the i…
We report the first detection of an OVIII Ly-alpha absorption line associated with an overdense region in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along the sightline towards PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). The absorption line is detected at 4.5 sigma level with cz~16,600 km/s. At the same velocity Shull et al.(1998) detected a small group of spiral galaxies (with an overdensity of delta_gal ~ 100) and low metallicity HI Ly-alpha clouds. We constrain the intragroup gas that gives rise to the OVIII Ly-alpha line to a baryon density in the range 1e-5 < n…
We have observed three quasars, PKS 1127-145, Q 1331+171 and Q0054+144, with the ACIS-S aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, in order to measure soft X-ray absorption associated with intervening 21-cm and damped Ly$α$ absorbers. For PKS 1127-145, we detect absorption which, if associated with an intervening z_{abs}=0.312 absorber, implies a metallicity of 23% solar. If the absorption is not at z_{abs}=0.312, then the metallicity is still constrained to be less than 23% solar. The advantage of the X-ray measurement is that the derived metallicity is insensitive to ionization, inclusion of an a…
We present results from a 50 ks observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 with the Chandra HETGS. The spectra above 2 keV are modeled by a power-law with a photon-index of 2.56+/-0.06. We confirm the presence of the soft excess below about 1.5 keV. If we fit the excess with blackbody model, the best-fit temperature is 0.124 keV. Ark 564 has been reported to show a peculiar emission line-like feature at 1 keV in various observations using lower resolution detectors, and the Chandra grating spectroscopy rules out an origin of blends of several narrow emission lines. We detect an ed…
We present detailed evidence for a warm absorber in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 and dispute earlier claims for relativistic O line emission. The HETG spectra show numerous narrow, unresolved (FWHM < 200 km/s) absorption lines from a wide range of ionization states of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S, Ar, and Fe. The O VII edge and 1s^2--1snp resonance line series to n=9 are clearly detected at rest in the AGN frame. We attribute previous reports of an apparently highly redshifted O VII edge to the 1s^2--1snp (n > 5) O VII resonance lines, and a neutral Fe L absorption complex. The shape of the Fe L f…
Recent Chandra and XMM observations of distant quasars have shown strong local (z~0) X-ray absorption lines from highly ionized gas, primarily He-like oxygen. The nature of these X-ray absorbers, i.e., whether they are part of the hot gas associated with the Milky Way or part of the intragroup medium in the Local Group, remains a puzzle due to the uncertainties in the distance. We present in this paper a survey of 20 AGNs with Chandra and XMM archival data. About 40% of the targets show local OVII He-alpha absorption with column densities around 10^16 cm^-2; in particular, OVII absorption is p…
We present simultaneous X-ray, far-ultraviolet, and near-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 obtained with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Previous non-simultaneous observations of this galaxy found two distinct UV absorption components, at -560 and -1900 km/s, with the former as the likely counterpart of the X-ray absorber. We confirm these two absorption components in our new UV observations, in which we detect prominent O VI, Ly alpha, N V, and C IV absorpt…
The recent detection with Chandra of two warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments toward Mrk 421 by Nicastro et al. provides a measurement of the bulk of the "missing baryons" in the nearby universe. Since Mrk 421 is a bright X-ray source, it is also frequently observed by the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) for calibration purposes. Using all available archived XMM observations of this source with small pointing offsets (<15"), we construct the highest-quality XMM grating spectrum of Mrk 421 to date with a net exposure time (excluding periods of high background flux) of…
We have re-analyzed the X-ray spectra of the gravitational lensed high-redshift BAL QSO APM 08279+5255, observed with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. Previous studies (Hasinger et al. 2002; Chartas et al. 2002) detected unusual, highly-ionized iron absorption features, but differed in their interpretation of these features, regarding the kinematical and ionization structure. We seek one physical model that can be successfully applied to both observations. For the first time we have performed detailed photoionization modeling on the X-ray spectrum of APM 08279+5255. The absorbing gas …
We present the results of a uniform analysis of the soft X-ray spectra of fifteen type I AGN observed with the high resolution X-ray gratings on board \emph{Chandra}. We found that ten of the fifteen AGN exhibit signatures of an intrinsic ionized absorber. The absorbers are photoionized and outflowing, with velocities in the range $\sim 10^{1}-10^{3}$ km $\rm{s}^{-1}$. The column density of the warm absorbing gas is $\sim 10^{20-23} \rm{cm}^{-2}$. Nine of the ten AGN exhibiting warm absorption are best--fit by multiple ionization components and three of the ten AGN \emph{require} multiple kine…
The high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy made possible by the 1999 deployment of the Chandra X-ray Observatory has revolutionized our understanding of stellar X-ray emission. Many puzzles remain, though, particularly regarding the mechanisms of X-ray emission from OB stars. Although numerous individual stars have been observed in high-resolution, realizing the full scientific potential of these observations will necessitate studying the high-resolution Chandra dataset as a whole. To facilitate the rapid comparison and characterization of stellar spectra, we have compiled a uniformly processed da…
We present Chandra X-ray observations of the radio-quiet QSO PG 2302+029. This quasar has a rare system of ultra-high velocity (-56,000 km/s) UV absorption lines that form in an outflow from the active nucleus (Jannuzi et al. 2003). The Chandra data indicate that soft X-ray absorption is also present. We perform a joint UV and X-ray analysis, using photoionization calculations, to detemine the nature of the absorbing gas. The UV and X-ray datasets were not obtained simultaneously. Nonetheless, our analysis suggests that the X-ray absorption occurs at high velocities in the same general region …
We present the analysis and interpretation of an observation of the flare star AD Leo (dM3e) with Chandra/LETG. The high resolution X-ray spectrum allowed us to infer the plasma emission measure distribution (EMD) vs. temperature, and the abundances of individual elements in the corona of this magnetically-active star, during a typical state characterized by significant variability but no large flaring event. We have also measured plasma densities at various temperatures using spectroscopic diagnostics provided by He-like triplets and Fe XXI lines. We show that the present EMD is similar to th…
(abridged) We have performed a set of phase-resolved X-ray observations of the magnetic B star Beta Cep, for which theoretical models predict the presence of a confined wind emitting X-rays from stationary shocks. We obtained four observations spaced in rotational phase with XMM-Newton and with Chandra. A detailed analysis of the data was performed to derive both photometric and spectral parameters from the EPIC data, searching for rotational modulation, and to derive the location of the X-ray plasma from the line ratios in the He-like triplets of N, O and Ne from the RGS data. The LETG data w…
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using UV spectra from the HST/STIS and FUSE, obtained 2002 May as part of a set of contemporaneous observations that included Chandra/HETGS spectra. In our analysis of the Chandra spectra, we determined that the soft X-ray absorber was the source of the saturated UV lines of O VI, C IV, and N V associated with the absorption feature at a radial velocity of ~ -500 km/sec, which we referred to as component D+E. In the present work, we have derived tighter constrains on the the line-of-sight covering facto…
We report on the analysis of an X-ray grating spectrum of the Classical Nova V382 Vel (1999), obtained with the LETG+HRC-S instrument on board CHANDRA, which shows emission lines dominating over any continuum. Lines of Si, Mg, Ne, O, N, and C are identified, but no Fe lines are detected. The total luminosity in the lines is 4x10^27erg/s (corrected for N_H=1.2x10^21cm^-2). The lines have broad profiles with FWHM corresponding to a velocity 2900+-200km/s. Some structure is identified in the profiles, but for different elements we find different profile structures. While lines of O show a broaden…
