We present an extended analysis of the deep Chandra LETG and HETG observations of the supernova remnant 1987A (SNR 1987A) carried out in 2007. The global fits to the grating spectra show that the temperature of the X-ray emitting plasma in the slower shocks in this system has remained stable for the last three years, while that in the faster shocks has decreased. This temperature evolution is confirmed by the first light curves of strong X-ray emission lines and their ratios. On the other hand, bulk gas velocities inferred from the X-ray line profiles are too low to account for the post-shock plasma temperatures inferred from spectral fits. This suggests that the X-ray emission comes from gas that has been shocked twice, first by the blast wave and again by shocks reflected from the inner ring of SNR 1987A. A new model that takes these considerations into account gives support to this physical picture.
We present a combined analysis of the X-ray emission of the Capella corona obtained with \textit{XMM-Newton} RGS, \textit{Chandra} HETGS, and LETGS. An improved atomic line database and a new differential emission measure (DEM) deconvolution method are developed for this purpose. Our new atomic database is based on the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database and incorporates improved calculations of ionization equilibrium and line emissivities for L-shell ions of abundant elements using the Flexible Atomic Code. The new DEM deconvolution method uses a Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) technique w…
We have undertaken deep, high-resolution observations of SN 1987A at ~20 years after its explosion with the Chandra HETG and LETG spectrometers. Here we present the HETG X-ray spectra of SN 1987A having unprecedented spectral resolution and signal-to-noise in the 6 A to 20 A bandpass, which includes the H-like and He-like lines of Si, Mg, Ne, as well as O VIII lines and bright Fe XVII lines. In joint analysis with LETG data, we find that there has been a significant decrease from 2004 to 2007 in the average temperature of the highest temperature component of the shocked-plasma emission. Model …
The X-ray luminous RS CVn binary system HR 1099 has been observed on several occasions in the early phases of \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM-Newton}. A very hot (up to 40 MK) dominant coronal plasma has been identified from the high-resolution spectroscopic data; cooler plasma is seen down to about 3 MK. We recently obtained 100 ksec in \textit{Chandra}'s Guest Observer Program to study the corona of HR 1099 with the High-Resolution Camera (HRC-S) and the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) across the complete temperature range above 1 MK. The data provide an unprecedented view of spectra…
The absolute calibration of space-borne instruments in the soft X-ray regime rests strongly on model spectra of hot white dwarfs. We analyze the Chandra LETG+HRC-S observations of the white dwarfs HZ43 A and Sirius B and of the neutron star RX J185635-3754 in order to resolve current uncertainties in the soft X-ray spectral fluxes and photospheric parameters of the three stars. We have obtained improved parameters for which fit the observations from the optical to the soft X-ray regime. Our approach allows us to quote their absolute spectral fluxes at selected wavelengths which may aid the cal…
In this paper, we analyze spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 obtained with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS), the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the European Photon Imaging Camera's (EPIC) onboard of XMM-Newton. The two observations were separated by ~7 months. In the LETGS spectrum we detect a highly ionized warm absorber corresponding to an ionization state of 400x10^{-9} W m, visible as a depression at 10-18 Å. This depression is formed by multiple weak Fe and Ne lines. A much smaller column density was found for the lowly ionized warm absorbe…
We present the Chandra LETGS X-ray spectrum of the nearby (~60 pc) neutron star RX J1856.5-3754. Detailed spectral analysis of the combined X-ray and optical data rules out the nonmagnetic neutron star atmosphere models with hydrogen, helium, iron and solar compositions. We also conclude that strongly magnetized atmosphere models are unable to represent the data. The data can be explained with a two-component blackbody model. The harder component with temperature of kT_bb~63 eV and a radius R_bb~2.2 km of the emitting region well fits the X-ray data and can be interpreted as radiation from a h…
We report preliminary results on the detection of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) along the line of sight toward the blazar 1ES 1028+511 (z = 0.361). 1ES 1028+511 was observed for 150 ks with the low energy transmission grating in combination with the high resolution camera onboard Chandra. An additional 300 ks observation was obtained using the reflection grating spectrometers (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We report the detection of three absorption lines which can be attributed to the WHIM, and compare the results with theoretical predictions.
We discuss the results from deep Chandra LETG observations of the supernova remnant 1987A (SNR 1987A). We find that a distribution of shocks, spanning the same range of velocities (from 300 to 1700 km/s) as deduced in the first part of our analysis (Zhekov et al. 2005, ApJL, 628, L127), can account for the entire X-ray spectrum of this object. The post-shock temperature distribution is bimodal, peaking at kT 0.5 and 3 keV. Abundances inferred from the X-ray spectrum have values similar to those for the inner circumstellar ring, except that the abundances of nitrogen and oxygen are approximatel…
We probe the relationship between surface magnetic fields and the X-ray emitting corona in the rapidly rotating star AB Dor. Circularly polarised spectra have been inverted to produce a surface (photospheric) magnetic field map. This surface map has been extrapolated to model AB Dor's coronal field topology and X-ray light curve. Chandra/LETG light curves of AB Dor from the same epoch show intrinsic variability at the 30% level. Period analysis indicates a fraction of this is due to rotational modulation. We measure velocity shifts in emission line centroids as a function of rotation period an…
We find resolved interstellar O K, Ne K, and Fe L absorption spectra in the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer spectrum of the low mass X-ray binary X0614+091. We measure the column densities in O and Ne, and find direct spectroscopic constraints on the chemical state of the interstellar O. These measurements probably probe a low-density line of sight through the Galaxy and we discuss the results in the context of our knowledge of the properties of interstellar matter in regions between the spiral arms.
We present the Chandra-LETGS analysis of Mrk 279, a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy. The spectrum shows a variety of features arising from different physical environments in the vicinity of the black hole. We detect three absorption components, located at the redshift of the source. One of them is likely to arise from the host galaxy. An additional component due to absorption by a collisionally ionized gas at z=0 is also observed. Such an absorption can be produced in the outskirts of our Galaxy or in the local group. The emission spectrum is rich in narrow and broad emission features. We tested the h…
We present for the first time a high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert galaxy. The Chandra-LETGS spectrum of NGC 5548 shows strong, narrow absorption lines from highly ionised species (the H-like and He-like ions of C, N, O, Ne, Na, Mg, Si, as well as Fe XIV--XXI). The lines are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The corresponding continuum absorption edges are weak or absent. The absorbing medium can be modelled by an outflowing, thin and warm shell in photoionization equilibrium. The absorption lines are similar to lower ionization absorption lines observed in the UV, although these UV …
Using the Chandra/High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (hereafter HETGS) we have detected Doppler motion of Capella's X-ray emission lines in the 6 -- 25AA wave-band. The observed motion follows the expected orbital motion of Capella's primary. This finding implies that the primary G8 III star, not the secondary G1 III star in the Hertzsprung gap, has been the dominant source of hot 10^{6.8} -- 10^{7}K plasma at least in the last six years. In addition, the results demonstrate the long-term stability of the HETGS and demonstrate small uncertainties of 25 and 33 km/s in the velocity de…
We present an analysis of our Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) observation of the quasar MR2251-178. The warm absorber of MR2251-178 is well described by a hydrogen column density, N_H~2x10^21 cm^-2, and an ionization parameter log(xi)~0.6. We find in the spectrum weak evidence for narrow absorption lines from Carbon and Nitrogen which indicate that the ionized material is in outflow. We note changes (in time) of the absorption structure in the band (0.6-1) keV (around the UTAs plus the OVII and OVIII K-edges) at different periods of the observation. We measure a (0…
V4743 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2002 No. 3) was discovered on 20 September 2002. We obtained a 5ks ACIS-S spectrum in November 2002 and found that the nova was faint in X-rays. We then obtained a 25ks CHANDRA LETGS observation on 19 March 2003. By this time, it had evolved into the Super Soft X-ray phase exhibiting a continuous spectrum with deep absorption features. The light curve from the observation showed large amplitude oscillations with a period of 1325s (22min) followed by a decline in total count rate after ~13ks of observations. The count rate dropped from ~40cts/s to practically zero within ~6k…
Chandra HETG spectra of the prototypical dwarf novae SS Cyg and U Gem in quiescence and outburst are presented and discussed. When SS Cyg goes into outburst, it becomes dimmer in hard X-rays and displays a dramatic shift in its relative line strengths, whereas when U Gem goes into outburst, it becomes brighter in hard X-rays and displays only a minor shift in its relative line strengths. In both systems, the emission lines become significantly broader in outburst, signaling the presence of high velocity gas either in Keplerian orbits around the white dwarf or flowing outward from the system.
We report on the detection of an emission line near 1.3 keV, which we associate with blue-shifted hydrogen-like sulfur (S XVI), in a 76.8 ksec Chandra HETGS spectrum of the afterglow of GRB 020813. The line is detected at 3.3 sigma significance. We also find marginal evidence for a line possibly due to hydrogen-like silicon (Si XIV) with the same blue-shift. A line from Fe is not detected, though a very low significance Ni feature may be present. A thermal model fits the data adequately, but a reflection model may provide a better fit. There is marginal evidence that the equivalent width of th…
High-resolution X-ray spectra of SS 433 obtained after a binary egress with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) were studied. Many Doppler-shifted X-ray emission lines from highly ionized elements were detected. The initial temperature of the jets is estimated to be 20 keV. The lines are found to generally be broader than the instrumented resolution. The widths of the Fe XXV K-alpha and Si XIII K-alpha lines correspond to velocity dispersions of 2100 (+600/-340) km/s and 840 (+180/-150) km/s respectively, in terms of Gaussian sigma. Neither the measured line width…
We confirm the detection of the relativistically broadened iron K-alpha emission at 6.4 keV with simultaneous Chandra HETGS and RXTE PCA observations. Heavily binned HETGS data show a disk line profile with parameters very similar to those previously seen by ASCA. We observe a resolved narrow component with a velocity width ~4700 km/s (FWHM ~ 11,000 km/s), that is most prominent, and narrower (FWHM ~ 3600 km/s) when the continuum flux is high. It plausibly is just the blue wing of the broad line. We obtain a stringent limit on the equivalent width of an intrinsically narrow line in the source …
We present new observations on PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETG), using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We confirm the detection of an absorption line plausibly identified as OVIII Ly-alpha from the warm-hot intergalactic medium associated with a small group of galaxies along the line of sight, as originally reported by Fang et al. 2002 (here after FANG02). Combining the previous observations in FANG02 and five new, long observations on the same target, we increase the total exposure time by a factor of three, and the total counts p…
We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of GRB 020405 obtained with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory starting 1.68 days after the burst. The spectrum appears featureless, with no evidence for emission lines, absorption edges, or narrow radiative recombination continua. The continuum can be fitted by a power law of photon index Gamma = 1.72 +/- 0.21 and temporal decay index alpha = 1.87 +/- 0.1, with a marginally significant excess column density of cold gas N_{H}=(4.7 +/- 3.7) x 10^{21} cm^{-2} at the redshift of the host gal…
We present an analysis of ten cool stars (Algol, Capella, Procyon, Eps Eri, Alpha Cen A&B, UX Ari, AD Leo, YY Gem, and HR1099) observed with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This sample contains all cools stars observed with the LETGS presently available to us with integration times sufficiently long to warrant a meaningful spectral analysis. Our sample comprises inactive, moderately active, and hyperactive stars and samples the bulk part of activity levels encountered in coronal X-ray sources. We use the LETGS spectra to carry ou…
Details of the design, fabrication, ground and flight calibration of the High Energy Transmission Grating, HETG, on the Chandra X-ray Observatory are presented after five years of flight experience. Specifics include the theory of phased transmission gratings as applied to the HETG, the Rowland design of the spectrometer, details of the grating fabrication techniques, and the results of ground testing and calibration of the HETG. For nearly six years the HETG has operated essentially as designed, although it has presented some subtle flight calibration effects.
We present high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of two recent GRB afterglows observed with the Low Energy Transmission Gratings on Chandra. The afterglows to GRBs 030328 and 041006 are detected beginning 15.33 and 16.8 hours after each burst, respectively, and are observed to fade in time during each ~90 ksec observation. We fit for the continuum emission in each full data set and for the data sliced into half and quarter time sections. For both afterglows, the continuum emission is well described by an absorbed power-law model, and the model parameters describing the absorption and spectral slo…
Cyg X-1 was observed in the high state at the conjunction orbital phase (0) with HETG/Chandra. Strong and asymmetric absorption lines of highly ionized species were detected, such as Fe XXV, Fe XXIV, Fe XXIII, Si XIV, S XVI, Ne X, and etc. In the high state the profile of the absorption lines are composed of an extended red wing and a less extended blue wing. The red wings of higher ionized species are more extended than that of lower ionized species. The detection of these lines provides a way to probe the properties of the flow around the companion and the black hole in Cyg X-1 during the hi…
We present high-resolution soft-X-ray spectra of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, taken with XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra LETGS. Its rich emission-line spectrum is dominated by recombination in a warm plasma (bright, narrow radiative recombination continua provide the ``smoking gun''), which is photoionized by the inferred nuclear power-law continuum. Radiative decay following photoexcitation of resonant transitions is also significant. A self-consistent model of an irradiated cone of gas is capable of reproducing the hydrogenic/heliumlike ionic line series in detail. The radial ioni…
We present a Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279. This observation was carried out simultaneously with HST-STIS and FUSE, in the context of a multiwavelength study of this source. The Chandra pointings were spread over ten days for a total exposure time of ~360 ks. The spectrum of Mrk279 shows evidence of broad emission features, especially at the wavelength of the OVII triplet. We quantitatively explore the possibility that this emission is produced in the broad line region (BLR). We modeled the broad UV emission lines seen in the FUSE and HST-STIS spectra following the …
We present the results from simultaneous chandra and rxte observations of the X-ray bright Broad-Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) 3C 382. The long (120 ks) exposure with chandra HETG allows a detailed study of the soft X-ray continuum and of the narrow component of the Fe Kalpha line. The rxte PCA data are used to put an upper limit on the broad line component and constrain the hard X-ray continuum. A strong soft excess below 1 keV is observed in the time-averaged HETG spectrum, which can be parameterized with a steep power law or a thermal model. The flux variability at low energies indicates that th…
A high-resolution spectrum obtained with the low-energy transmission grating onboard the Chandra observatory is presented and analyzed. Our analysis indicates very hot plasma with temperatures up to T=15-20MK from the continuum and from ratios of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of Si, Mg, and Ne. In addition lower temperature material is present since OVII and NVI are detected. Two methods for density diagnostics are applied. The He-like triplets from NVII to SiXIII are used and densities around 10^11 cm^-3 are found for the low temperature ions. Taking the UV radiation field from the B sta…
Electron density diagnostics based on the triplets of Helium-like CV, NVI, and OVII are applied to the X-ray spectra of Capella and Procyon measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. New theoretical models for the calculation of the line ratios between the forbidden (f), intercombination (i), and the resonance (r) lines of the helium-like triplets are used. The derived densities are quite typical of densities found in the solar active regions, and also pressures and temperatures in Procyon's and Capella's corona at a level of …
We present the first X-ray spectrum obtained by the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum is of Capella and covers a wavelength range of 5-175 A (2.5-0.07 keV). The measured wavelength resolution, which is in good agreement with ground calibration, is $Δλ\simeq$ 0.06 A (FWHM). Although in-flight calibration of the LETGS is in progress, the high spectral resolution and unique wavelength coverage of the LETGS are well demonstrated by the results from Capella, a coronal source rich in spectral emission lines. While the primary purp…
We present the results of a Chandra 30 ks observation of the low mass X-ray binary and atoll source 4U 1705-44. Here we concentrate on the study of discrete features in the energy spectrum at energies below 3 keV, as well as on the iron Kalpha line, using the HETG spectrometer on board of the Chandra satellite. Below 3 keV, three narrow emission lines are found at 1.47, 2.0, and 2.6 keV. The 1.47 and 2.6 keV are probably identified with Ly-alpha emission from Mg XII and S XVI, respectively. The identification of the feature at 2.0 keV is uncertain due to the presence of an instrumental feature…
Mkn 421 was observed by Chandra twice, on November 5, 1999 as part of the Chandra calibration program, with the ACIS-HETG configuration, and on May 29, 2000 following our Target Of Opportunity request aimed to catch the source in an ultra-high state, with both the ACIS-HETG and the HRC-LETG configurations. In this contribution we present and compare the two Chandra-MEG observations of Mkn 421, which lasted 26 and 19.6 ks respectively.
We present results from Chandra HETGS (250 ks over two epochs) and XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS (60 ks) observations of NGC 2110, which has been historically classified as a Narrow Emission Line Galaxy galaxy. Our results support the interpretation that the source is a Seyfert 2 viewed through a patchy absorber. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the source is best described by a power law of photon index $Γ$ ~1.7, modified by absorption from multiple layers of neutral material at a large distance from the central supermassive black hole. We report the strong detections of Fe K$α$ and Si K$α$ lines, whi…
We study the absorption and emission properties of the photoionised gas near one of the brightest and most variable AGN, the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051, in order to constrain the geometry, dynamics and ionisation structure of the outflow. We analyse two observations taken with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) of Chandra. We study the spectra of both observations and investigate the spectral response to a sudden, long-lasting flux decrease of a factor of 5 that occurred during the second observation. We confirm the preliminary detection of a highly ionised component with an…
We report on a 25 ks observation of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The continuum spectrum is consistent with previous measurements and is well fit by an absorbed power-law + blackbody model with photon index Gamma=3.3+/-0.4 and blackbody temperature kT=0.418+/-0.013 keV. The pulsar frequency was 0.1150966+/-0.0000017 Hz and the pulse fractions were between 8.7% and 21%, which are also consistent with past measurements. No evidence was found for emission or absorption lines with an upper limi…
Spectroscopy with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer provides details on X-ray emission and activity from young and cool stars through resolution of emission lines from a variety of ions. We are beginning to see trends in activity regarding abundances, emission measures, and variability. Here we contrast spectra of TV Crt, a weak-lined T Tauri star, with TW Hya, a Classical T Tauri star. TV Crt has a spectrum more like magnetic activity driven coronae, relative to the TW Hya spectrum, which we have interpreted as due to accretion-produced X-rays. We have also observed th…
We present high-resolution X-ray spectra from the young supernova remnant Cas A using a 70-ks observation taken by the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). Line emission, dominated by Si and S ions, is used for high-resolution spectral analysis of many bright, narrow regions of Cas A to examine their kinematics and plasma state. These data allow a 3D reconstruction using the unprecedented X-ray kinematic results: we derive unambiguous Doppler shifts for these selected regions, with values ranging between -2500 and +4000 km/s. Plasma diagnostics of these regions, deriv…
Eta Car may be the most massive and luminous star in the Galaxy and is suspected to be a massive, colliding wind binary system. The CHANDRA X-ray observatory has obtained a calibrated, high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the star uncontaminated by the nearby extended soft X-ray emisssion. Our 89 ksec CHANDRA observation with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) shows that the hot gas near the star is non-isothermal. The temperature distribution may represent the emission on either side of the colliding wind bow shock, effectively ``resolving'' the shock. If so, the pre-shock…
The Chandra AO1 HETGS observation of the micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 in the low hard state reveals (1) neutral K absorption edges from Fe, Si, Mg, and S in cold gas, and (2) highly ionized (Fe XXV and Fe XXVI) absorption attributed to a hot disk, disk wind, or corona. The neutral edges reveal anomalous Si and Fe abundances which we attribute to surrounding cold material in/near the environment of GRS 1915+105. We also point out the exciting possibility for the first astrophysical detection of XAFS attributed to material in interstellar grains. We place constraints on the ionization parameter, te…
We present results from a 50 ks observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 with the Chandra HETGS. The spectra above 2 keV are modeled by a power-law with a photon-index of 2.56+/-0.06. We confirm the presence of the soft excess below about 1.5 keV. If we fit the excess with blackbody model, the best-fit temperature is 0.124 keV. Ark 564 has been reported to show a peculiar emission line-like feature at 1 keV in various observations using lower resolution detectors, and the Chandra grating spectroscopy rules out an origin of blends of several narrow emission lines. We detect an ed…
Electron density diagnostics based on a line intensity ratio of Si X are applied to the X-ray spectra of Procyon, $α$ Cen A$&$B, Capella and $ε$ Eri measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) combined with High-resolution Camera (HRC) on board the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The ratio $R_1$ of the intensities of the Si X lines at 50.524 Åand 50.691 Åis adopted. A certain of the temperature effect in $R_1$ appears near the low-density limit region, which is due to the contamination of Si X line at 50.703 Å. Using the emission measure distribution (EMD) model der…
Using the combined spectral and spatial resolving power of the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETGS) on board Chandra, we obtain separate spectra from the bright central source of NGC 1068 (Primary region), and from a fainter bright spot 4" to the NE (Secondary region). Both spectra are dominated by line emission from H- and He-like ions of C through S, and from Fe L-shell ions, but also include narrow radiative recombination continua, indicating that most of the soft X-ray emission arises in low-temperature (kT few eV) photoionized plasma. We confirm the conclusions of Kinkhabwala et al. (2…
We present preliminary results from a 900 ks exposure of NGC 3783 with the Chandra/HETGS. This is the best combination of signal-to-noise and resolution ever obtained for an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We resolve the narrow Fe Kαline to have FWHM of 1720+/-360 km/s which, under the simple assumption of virialized system, suggest that this narrow line is emitted between the broad line region and the narrow line region. We do not detect any broad component for the Fe Kαline though such component was observed in previous ASCA observations of this object. Our results suggest an evolution in the…
We report on four Chandra grating observations of the oblique magnetic rotator theta^1 Ori C (O5.5 V) covering a wide range of viewing angles with respect to the star's 1060 G dipole magnetic field. We employ line-width and centroid analyses to study the dynamics of the X-ray emitting plasma in the circumstellar environment, as well as line-ratio diagnostics to constrain the spatial location, and global spectral modeling to constrain the temperature distribution and abundances of the very hot plasma. We investigate these diagnostics as a function of viewing angle and analyze them in conjunctio…
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
We present {\it Chandra} HETG observations of SS Cygni in quiescence and outburst. The spectra are characterized by He-like and H-like Ka emission lines from O to Fe, as well as L-shell emission lines from Fe. In quiescence, the spectra are dominated by the H-like Ka lines, whereas in outburst the He-like lines are as intense as the H-like lines. In outburst, the H-like Ka lines from O to Si are broad, with widths of 4--14 eV in Gaussian $σ$ (1800--2300$ {\rm km s^{-1}}$). The large line widths, together with line profiles, indicate that the line-emitting plasma is associated with the Kepleria…
We present observations of the Rapid Burster (RB, also known as MXB 1730-335) using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. The average interval between type II (accretion) bursts was about 40 s. There was one type I (thermonuclear flash) burst and about 20 "mini-bursts" which are probably type II bursts whose peak flux is 10-40% of the average peak flux of the other type II bursts. The time averaged spectra of the type II bursts are well fit by a blackbody with a temperature of kT = 1.6 keV, a radius of 8.9 km for a distance of 8.6 kpc, and an interstellar column density of…
We present spatially resolved Chandra HETGS observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. X-ray imaging and high resolution spectroscopy are used to test the Seyfert unification theory. Fe K-alpha emission is concentrated in the nuclear region, as are neutral and ionized continuum reflection. This is consistent with reprocessing of emission from a luminous, hidden X-ray source by the obscuring molecular torus and X-ray narrow-line region (NLR). We detect extended hard X-ray emission surrounding the X-ray peak in the nuclear region, which may come from the outer portion of the torus. Detailed …
We report the analysis of the high-resolution soft X-ray spectrum of the nearby F-type star Procyon in the wavelength range from 5 to 175 Angstrom obtained with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board Chandra and with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) and the EPIC-MOS CCD spectrometers on board XMM-Newton. Line fluxes have been measured separately for the RGS and LETGS. Spectra have been fitted globally to obtain self-consistent temperatures, emission measures, and abundances. The total volume emission measure is ~4.1 x 10e50/cm3 with a peak between 1 and 3 M…
The time-averaged 30 ks Chandra HETGS observation of the micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 in the low hard state reveals for the first time in this source neutral K absorption edges from Fe, Si, Mg, & S. Ionized resonance absorption from H-, and He-like Fe (XXV, XXVI), Ca XX and possibly emission from neutral Fe Kalpha and ionized Fe XXV (forbidden, or the resonance emission component of a P-Cygni profile) are also seen. We report the tentative detection of the first astrophysical signature of XAFS in the photoelectric edge of Si (and possibly Fe and Mg), attributed to material in grains. The large co…
The HETG can be used to obtain spatially resolved spectra of moderately extended sources. We present preliminary results for two well studied, oxygen rich supernova remnants in the Magellanic clouds, E0102-72 and N132D. The dispersed spectrum of E0102-72 shows images of the remnant in the light of individual emission lines from H-like and He-like ions of O, Mg, Ne and He-like Si with no evidence of Fe. The diameters of the images for various ions, measured in the cross-dispersion direction, increase monotonically with the ionization age for the given ion. This shows in detail the progression o…
We observed the Galactic black hole GX 339-4 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) for 75 ksec during the decline of its 2002-2003 outburst. The sensitivity of this observation provides an unprecedented glimpse of a Galactic black hole at about a tenth of the luminosity of the outburst peak. The continuum spectrum is well described by a model consisting of multicolor disk blackbody (kT = 0.6 keV) and power-law (Gamma = 2.5) components. X-ray reflection models yield improved fits. A strong, relativistic Fe K-alpha emission line is revealed, indicating that the i…
We present the first grating-resolution X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. These spectra reveal many narrow absorption lines from the H-like and He-like ions of O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Ar, as well as FeXVII-FeXXI L-shell lines. We have also identified several weak emission lines, mainly from O and Ne. The absorption lines are blueshifted by a mean velocity of approximately 440\pm200 km/s and are not resolved, indicating a velocity dispersion within the absorbing gas of a few hundred km/s…
A Chandra AO1 30ks HETGS observation of the X-ray transient micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 reveals absorption edges and faint line emission over the HETG energy range. We find from a preliminary analysis evidence for prominent neutral K edges associated with iron, silicon, magnesium, and tentatively sulphur. The column densities assuming solar abundances are consistent with ~ few x $10^{22} cm^{-2}$ in excess of the Galactic value, and may point to surrounding cold material associated with GRS 1915+105. Neutral Fe K$α$ emission, and ionized absorption from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI are resolved. We limit …
The line ratios R and G of the three main lines of He-like ions (triplet: resonance, intercombination, forbidden lines) are calculated for CV, NVI, OVII, NeIX, MgXI, and SiXIII. These ratios can be used to derive electron density n_e and temperature T_e of hot late-type stellar coronae and O, B stars from high-resolution spectra obtained with Chandra (LETGS, HETGS) and XMM-Newton (RGS). All excitation and radiative processes between the levels and the effect of upper-level cascades from collisional electronic excitation and from dielectronic and radiative recombination have been considered. Wh…
We present the high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the low-redshift quasar H 1821+643 and its surrounding hot cluster observed with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). An iron emission line attributed to the quasar at ~6.43 keV (rest frame) is clearly resolved, with an equivalent width of ~100 eV. Although we cannot rule out contributions to the line from a putative torus, the diskline model provides an acceptable fit to this iron line. We also detect a weak emission feature at ~6.9 keV (rest frame). We suggest that both lines could originate in an accretion disk c…
We present some early results on AGN from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, highlighting high resolution spectroscopy using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). The quasar PKS 0637-752 was found to have a very bright X-ray jet whose shape is remarkably similar to that of the radio jet on a size scale of 100 kpc, but the X-ray emission is still inexplicably bright. Two BL Lac objects, PKS 2155-304 and Mrk 421, observed with the spectrometer were found to have no strong absorption or emission features. Other radio loud AGN observed with the HETGS show simple power law spectra …
We present a high resolution X-ray spectrum of the iron K bandpass in MCG-6-30-15 based on a 522 ksec observation with Chandra's High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. The Chandra spectrum is consistent with the presence of a relativistically broadened, highly redshifted iron K alpha emission line with a similar profile to previous observations. A number of narrow features are detected above 2 keV, including a narrow Fe K alpha emission line and narrow absorption lines from H- and He-like Fe, H-like S and H-like Si. This absorption is well described by a photoionized plasma with a colu…
We observed the "micro-quasar" GRS 1758-258 four times with Chandra. Two HRC-I observations were made in 2000 September-October spanning an intermediate-to-hard spectral transition (identified with RXTE). Another HRC-I and an ACIS/HETG observation were made in 2001 March following a hard-to-soft transition to a very low flux state. Based on the three HRC images and the HETG zero order image, the accurate position (J2000) of the X-ray source is RA = 18h 01m 12.39s, Dec = -25d 44m 36.1s (90% confidence radius = 0".45), consistent with the purported variable radio counterpart. All three HRC image…
