We present photoionization calculations for the spatially-extended absorbers observed towards the extended emission line spectrum of two high-redshift radio galaxies: 0943-242 (z=2.922) and 0200+015 (z=2.230), with the aim of reproducing the absorber column ratio, N(CIV)/N(HI). We explore the effects of using different UV continua in the photoionization calculations. A comparison is drawn between the absorber in 0200+015 and the two absorbers in the lensed Lynx Arc Nebula at z=3.36, which present similar N(CIV)/N(HI) ratios. We find that hot stars from a powerful starburst, or a metagalactic background radiation (MBR) in which stars dominate over quasars, are equally successful in producing the observed N(CIV)/N(HI), assuming subsolar absorber metallicities. These softer SEDs eliminate the factor 1000 difference in metallicity between the two absorbers encountered in earlier work assuming a powerlaw SED. The detected level of continuum flux in 0943-242 is consistent with stellar ionization. If the MBR is responsible for the ionization of the radio galaxy absorbing shells, their radii (if spherical) would be large (> 100 kpc) and their mass would be huge (>1E12 M_Sun), implying that a feedback event within the radiogalaxy has expelled more baryonic material than left within it. If, as we believe more likely, stellar sources within the radiogalaxy are responsible for the absorber's ionization, smaller radii of ~25 kpc and much smaller masses (~1E8-1E10 M_Sun) are inferred. This radius is consistent with the observed transition in radio source size between smaller sources where strong HI absorption is almost ubiquitous, and the larger sources where it is mostly lacking. Finally, we outline additional absorption line diagnostics which could further constrain the properties of the haloes and their ionization sources.
We present VLT-UVES echelle spectra of the Lyman alpha emission and absorption in five radio galaxies at redshifts z=2.55-4.1. Together with data from our pilot study, we have a sample of 7 such systems with radio source sizes ~ 1-90 kpc with which to address the origin of the absorbing gas. Echelle resolution again reveals that some systems with N_HI>1E18 cm^-2 in lower resolution data in fact consist of several weaker absorbers with N_HI<1E15 cm^-2. We identify two groups of HI absorbers: strong absorbers with N_HI=1E18-1E20 cm^-2 and weaker systems with N_HI=1E13-1E15 cm^-2. There are none …
We present VLT-UVES echelle spectroscopy of the HI and CIV absorption in the spatially-extended Lyman-alpha emission around two high-redshift radio galaxies 0200+015 (z=2.23) and 0943-242 (z=2.92). The absorbers in 0943-242 exhibit little additional structure compared with previous low-resolution spectroscopy and the main absorber is still consistent with HI column density of ~10^19 cm^-2. This is consistent with a picture in which the absorbing gas has low density and low metallicity and is distributed in a smooth absorbing shell located beyond the emission-line gas. However, the main absorbe…
We consider geometries and possible physical models for weak low ionization absorbers based on the relative incidence of low and high ionization absorption systems. We found a total of 16 metal-line systems, with low and/or high ionization absorption detected in our survey of weak low ionization absorption systems from the archive of HST/STIS data. The weak low ionization absorbers trace an abundant population of metal-enriched regions (close to solar metallicity). Generally, models show that these systems have a ~10pc region of higher density gas and a ~1kpc region of lower density phase of h…
Motivated by recent observation of Lanzetta et al. that most luminous galaxies at low redshifts produce $\lya$ absorption at impact parameter $l\lsim 160 \kpch$, we propose that these absorbers are clouds confined by the pressure of ambient hot gas in galactic haloes. We determine the properties of this hot gas and of the absorption systems on the basis of observational and theoretical constraints. The absorbing clouds need to be replenished on about one orbital time ($\sim 10^9$ yrs) in the galactic halo. The pressure and temperature of the gas at radius $r\sim 100\kpc$ are $P=(10-100){\rm cm…
An extremely careful separation of the weak metal-line systems relating to the Lyman forest absorbers into individual ``single-phase ionization'' components with accurate parameters has yielded a large sample in the wide redshift range 1.9 < z < 4.4. The systems typically span several hundred km/s and within each the components show a strong coherence in their ionization properties. No sudden evolution is found in the column density ratio N(Si IV)/N(C IV), contrary to previous indication of a large change near z = 3, although there is an apparent rise below z~2.2 and above z~3.8. A smooth not …
A hydromagnetic (MHD) wind from a clumpy molecular accretion disk is invoked to explain observations of warm absorbing (WA) gas in UVX from Sy galaxies. This paper focuses on two issues: (1) compatibility of kinematics and dynamics of MHD wind with the observed properties of WAs; and (2) relationship between the UVX absorptions. We provide an in-depth comparison between the MHD model and the Sy 1 galaxy NGC 5548, which at high spectral resolution exhibits a number of discrete UV absorption components. We find that: (1) the total column densities of Ovii, Oviii and H, are reproduced by constrai…
We have observed the broad-line radio galaxy Arp 102B with ASCA in order to determine the absorbing column density towards its X-ray source and measure its X-ray spectrum. The ultimate goal was to constrain the properties of the medium responsible for the metastable Fe II absorption lines observed in its UV spectrum. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum is described by a simple power-law model of photon index 1.58+/-0.04 modified by photoelectric absorption with an column density of (2.8+/-0.3)x10^{21} cm^{-2}. An Fe K-alpha line is not detected with an upper limit to its equivalent width of 200 eV (…
We investigate the origin of the broad absorption features detected near 1-1.4 keV in several Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, by modelling the absorbing medium with various physical parameters, using the ionization code PEGAS. The observed properties of the X-ray absorption features can be reproduced by taking into account the peculiar soft X-ray excess which is well fitted by a blackbody plus an underlying power law. We equally stress that the emission coming from the absorbing medium (related to the covering factor) has a strong influence on the resulting X-ray spectrum, in particular on the…
We obtained X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~3516 in March 1995 using ASCA. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with HUT on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent O~vii and O~viii absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe~K$α$ emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe~K$α$ line. These features are s…
We present an analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 985. The EPIC spectra present strong residuals to a single power-law model, indicating the presence of ionized absorbing gas and a soft excess. A broad-band fit to the EPIC and RGS spectra shows that the continuum can be well fit with a power-law and a blackbody component. The RGS can be modeled either with two or three absorption components. In the two absorber model the low-ionization one, accounts for the presence of the Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (Fe VII-XIII), and the high ionization component is r…
The unresolved transition array (UTA) of iron M-shell ions is a prominent absorption feature in the X-ray spectrum of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Modeling photoionized plasmas in attempt to match the observed silicon and oxygen lines fail to predict the level of ionization of iron as inferred by this feature. It is suggested that the discrepancy is due to underestimation of the low-temperature dielectronic recombination rates for iron M-shell ions. Modified ionization balance calculations, based on new (guessed) atomic data, support this idea. The results are shown and compared to the …
We present extensive metal-line absorption properties for 45 absorption systems that were selected by their Mg II absorption at redshifts between 0.4 and 1.4. For each system the properties of several chemical species are determined, including a wide range of ionization conditions. In the optical, the absorption systems have been observed at ~6 km/s resolution with HIRES/Keck, which covered Mg II, several Fe II transitions, Mg I, and in some cases (depending upon redshift), Ca II, Ti II, Mn II, and Al III. Ultraviolet, lower resolution (~230 km/s) Faint Object Spectrograph data (1600 - 3275 An…
We present the results of a uniform analysis of the soft X-ray spectra of fifteen type I AGN observed with the high resolution X-ray gratings on board \emph{Chandra}. We found that ten of the fifteen AGN exhibit signatures of an intrinsic ionized absorber. The absorbers are photoionized and outflowing, with velocities in the range $\sim 10^{1}-10^{3}$ km $\rm{s}^{-1}$. The column density of the warm absorbing gas is $\sim 10^{20-23} \rm{cm}^{-2}$. Nine of the ten AGN exhibiting warm absorption are best--fit by multiple ionization components and three of the ten AGN \emph{require} multiple kine…
(abridged) The high-resolution X-ray spectrum of NGC 3783 shows several dozen absorption lines and a few emission lines from the H-like and He-like ions of O, Ne, Mg, Si, and S as well as from Fe XVII - Fe XXIII L-shell transitions. We have reanalyzed the Chandra HETGS spectrum using better flux and wavelength calibrations along with more robust methods. Combining several lines from each element, we clearly demonstrate the existence of the absorption lines and determine they are blueshifted relative to the systemic velocity by -610+/-130 km/s. We find the Ne absorption lines in the High Energy…
We have studied a spectrum of Q0122+0338 (z = 1.202) obtained by the FOS on board HST. We present the analysis of three associated absorption systems at z = 1.207, 1.199 and 1.166. The most complex of these at z = 1.207 shows strong absorption from the highly ionized transitions of Lyman alpha, Lyman beta, N V, O VI, Si III, Si IV, and possibly P V. We derive minimal ionic column densities and compare them with those predicted from numerical photoionization models. We find that conditions in the absorbing gas are consistent with an absorber with metallicity twice solar and a total absorbing co…
Comparisons of the kinematics of Mg II absorbing gas and the stellar rotation curves in 0.5 < z < 1.0 spiral galaxies suggests that, at least in some cases, the extended gaseous envelopes may be dynamically coupled to the stellar matter. A strong correlation exists between the overall kinematic spread of Mg II absorbing gas and C IV absorption strength, and therefore kinematics of the higher-ionization gas. Taken together, the data may suggest a "halo/disk connection" between z~1 galaxies and their extended gaseous envelopes. Though the number of galaxies in our sample are few, there are no cl…
We revisit the evaporation process of gas from dwarf galaxies after it has been photo-ionized by the UV flux from the first stars and AGNs and heated to T~10^4K or 2x10^4K respectively. Earlier estimates, based on the balance between pressure and gravity, indicated that dark haloes of virial velocity lower than Vevap ~ 11-13 km/s have lost most of their gas in a dynamical time. We follow the continuous evaporation by a thermal wind during the period when the ionizing flux was effective. We find that the critical virial velocity for significant evaporation is significantly higher. For example, …
Keck HIRES spectra were obtained of the separate images of three gravitationally lensed QSOs (UM 673, Q1104-1804, and Q1422+2309). We studied the velocity and column density differences in CIV doublets in each QSO. Unlike the low ionization gas clouds typical of the interstellar gas in the Galaxy or damped Ly alpha galaxies, the spatial density distribution of CIV absorbing gas clouds turns out to be mostly featureless on scales up to a few hundred parsecs, with column density differences rising to 50 percent or more over separations beyond a few kpc. Similarly, velocity shear becomes detectab…
[Slightly Abridged] We present a detailed statistical analysis of the column densities, N, and Doppler parameters, b, of MgII absorbing clouds at redshifts 0.4<z<1.2. We use the HIRES/Keck data and Voigt profile (VP) fitting results presented by Churchill & Vogt (Paper I). The sample is comprised of 175 clouds from 23 systems along 18 quasar lines of sight. In order to understand whether inferred conditions could be "false", we performed extensive simulations of our VP analyses. In brief, we find: (1) N(FeII) and N(MgII) are correlated at the 9-sigma level. There is a 5-sigma anti-correlation …
We present a preliminary analysis of the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mkn 3, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The high-energy spectrum (lambda < 4 Ang) is dominated by reflection of the AGN continuum radiation in a cold optically thick medium and contains bright K-alpha fluorescent lines from iron and silicon, as well as weak, blended lines from sulfur and magnesium. The soft X-ray emission (4 < lambda < 23 Ang) is spatially extended along the [O III] ionization cone and shows discrete signatur…
We explore the effects of UV absorbing material on the shape of the EUV continuum radiation emitted by the active galactic nucleus, and on the relative strengths of emission lines, formed in the narrow line regions of Seyfert galaxies, excited by this continuum. Within a sample of Seyfert 1.5 galaxies, objects with flatter soft X-ray slopes tend to have lower values of He II 4686/H-beta, which implies a correlation between the observed spectral energy distribution of the ionizing continuum and the narrow emission line strengths. Objects with the flattest soft X-ray continua tend to possess hig…
The spectrum of beta CMa (Mirzam) between 1000 and 1200 A was recorded at a wavelength resolving power ~ 60 000 by the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) during its orbital flight on the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996. New information about interstellar absorption lines of CII, CII*, NI and OI from this spectrum are combined with the HST results reported by Dupin & Gry (1998) to arrive at new conclusions about the physical properties of the absorbing gas in front of beta CMa. For two prominent velocity components centered at heliocentric velocities of +20.0 and +30.5 k…
In this paper, we report VLBA radio maps at three frequencies and an ASCA X-ray spectrum of the water megamaser galaxy NGC 2639, which is believed to contain an edge-on viewed accretion disk. The radio observations reveal a compact ($<$ 0.2 pc) nuclear source with a spectrum that turns over sharply near 5 GHz. The X-ray spectrum shows emission in excess of a power-law model at energies greater than 4 keV; we interpret this excess as compact, nuclear, hard X-ray emission with the lower energies photoelectrically absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of $\simeq$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}…
We analyze high resolution spectra of a multi--cloud weak [defined as W_r(MgII) < 0.3 A] absorbing system along the line of sight to PG 1634+706. This system gives rise to a partial Lyman limit break and absorption in MgII, SiII, CII, SiIII, SiIV, CIV, and OVI. The lower ionization transitions arise in two kinematic subsystems with a separation of ~150 km/s. Each subsystem is resolved into several narrow components, having Doppler widths of 3-10 kms. For both subsystems, the OVI absorption arises in a separate higher ionization phase, in regions dominated by bulk motions in the range of 30-40 …
We have obtained a high resolution, high S/N UVES spectrum of the bright QSO HE2243-6031 to analyze the damped Ly-alpha system (DLA) observed at z=2.33. The metallicity of this system is 1/12 solar at a neutral hydrogen column density of log N(HI)=20.7. From the observed ratios [Zn/Cr]=-0.01+/-0.05 and [S/Si]=-0.06+/-0.03$ we conclude that dust is very likely absent from the ISM of this protogalaxy. We observe an enhancement of the alpha/Fe-peak ratios of +0.2 dex for various elements, a marked odd-even effect in Mn, and a strong underabundance of N relative to Si and S, [N/Si,S]=-1 at [Si/H]=…
We present results from a 150 ksec Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3516 in October 2005. The source was in a relatively highly absorbed state. Our best-fit model is consistent with the presence of a low-ionization absorber which has a column density near 5 * 10^{22} cm^{-2} and covers most of the X-ray continuum source (covering fraction 96-100%). A high-ionization absorbing component, which yields a narrow absorption feature consistent with Fe K XXVI, is confirmed. A relativistically broadened Fe K alpha line is required in all fits, even after the complex absorption is taken into a…
We have re-analyzed the X-ray spectra of the gravitational lensed high-redshift BAL QSO APM 08279+5255, observed with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. Previous studies (Hasinger et al. 2002; Chartas et al. 2002) detected unusual, highly-ionized iron absorption features, but differed in their interpretation of these features, regarding the kinematical and ionization structure. We seek one physical model that can be successfully applied to both observations. For the first time we have performed detailed photoionization modeling on the X-ray spectrum of APM 08279+5255. The absorbing gas …
We use high-resolution UV spectra of the radio-quiet QSO H1821+643 (z_em = 0.297), obtained with STIS and FUSE, to study the ionization and metallicity of an intervening O VI absorption line system at z(abs) = 0.1212. This absorber has the following notable properties: (1) Several galaxies are close to the sight line at the absorber redshift, including an actively star-forming galaxy at a projected distance of 144 kpc. (2) There is a complex cluster of H I lya absorption lines near the O VI redshift, including at least five components spread over a velocity range of ~700 km/s . (3) The stronge…
We present a detailed model for the ionized absorbing gas evident in the 900 ksec Chandra HETGS spectrum of NGC 3783. The analysis was carried out with PHASE a new tool designed to model X-ray and UV absorption features in ionized plasmas. The 0.5-10 keV intrinsic continuum of the source is well represented by a single power law (Gamma=1.53) and a soft black-body component (kT=10 keV). The spectrum contains over 100 features, which are well fit by PHASE with just six free parameters. The model consists of a simple two phase absorber with difference of 35 in the ionization parameter and differe…
HE 0141-3932 (zem = 1.80) is a bright blue radio-quite quasar with an unusually weak Ly-alpha emission line. Large redshift differences (Delta z = 0.05) are observed between high ionization and low ionization emission lines. Absorption systems identified at zabs = 1.78, 1.71, and 1.68 show mild oversolar metallicities (Z ~= 1-2Zsolar) and can be attributed to the associated gas clouds ejected from the circumnuclear region. The joint analysis of the emission and absorption lines leads to the conclusion that this quasar is seen almost pole-on. Its apparent luminosity may be Doppler boosted by ~1…
We present a wide grid of models for the structure and transmission properties of warm absorbers in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Contrary to commonly used constant density models, our absorbing cloud is assumed to be under constant total (gas plus radiation) pressure. This assumption implies the coexistence of material at different temperatures and ionization states, which is a natural consequence of pressure and thermal equilibrium. Our photoionization code allows us to compute the profiles of the density, the temperature, the gas pressure, the radiation pressure and the ionization state acr…
We used HIRES/Keck profiles (R=6 km/s) of MgII and FeII in combination with FOS/HST spectra (R=230 km/s) to place constraints on the physical conditions (metallicities, ionization conditions, and multi-phase distribution) of absorbing gas in three galaxies at z=0.9254, 0.9276, and 0.9343 along the line of sight to PG 1206+459. The chemical and ionization species covered in the FOS/HST spectra are HI, SiII, CII, NII, FeIII, SiIII, SiIV, NIII, CIII, CIV, SVI, NV, and OVI, with ionization potentials ranging from 13.6 to 138 eV. The multiple MgII clouds exhibit complex kinematics and the CIV, NV a…
We present Chandra X-ray observations of the radio-quiet QSO PG 2302+029. This quasar has a rare system of ultra-high velocity (-56,000 km/s) UV absorption lines that form in an outflow from the active nucleus (Jannuzi et al. 2003). The Chandra data indicate that soft X-ray absorption is also present. We perform a joint UV and X-ray analysis, using photoionization calculations, to detemine the nature of the absorbing gas. The UV and X-ray datasets were not obtained simultaneously. Nonetheless, our analysis suggests that the X-ray absorption occurs at high velocities in the same general region …
This paper discusses the detection of P V 1118,1128 and other broad absorption lines (BALs) in archival HST spectra of the low-redshift BALQSO, PG 1254+047. The P V identification is secured by excellent redshift and profile coincidences with the other BALs, such as C IV 1548,1550 and Si IV 1393,1403, and by photoionization calculations showing that other lines near this wavelength, e.g. Fe III 1123, should be much weaker than P V. The observed BAL strengths imply that either 1) there are extreme abundance ratios such as [C/H] >~ +1.0, [Si/H] >~ +1.8 and [P/C] >~ +2.2, or 2) at least some of t…
We have obtained high resolution (FWHM = 4.4 km/s) Keck spectra of images A and C of the gravitationally lensed QSO Q1422+231. The images are separated by 1.3" on the sky. In an absorption system at z = 3.538 gas column density variations by an order of magnitude and velocity shear on the order of 10 km/s are observed in the low ionization (SiII, CII) lines. The transverse separation between the lines of sight in the absorbing cloud is estimated to be as small as 26 parsec, corresponding to an effective angular resolution of 4 milliarcseconds as seen from the Earth. In contrast, the high ioniz…
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained in 2000 June with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915--1185 Angstroms at a resolution of 20 km/s. The spectrum shows a weak continuum and emission from O VI, C III, and He II. The FUSE data were obtained when the AGN was in a low state, which has revealed strong, narrow O VI emission lines. We also resolve intrinsic, associated absorption lines of O VI and the Lyman series. Several distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of 0…
(Abridged) We investigate the ionized environment of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 985 with a new Chandra-HETGS observation and an archival BeppoSAX observation. Two absorption components are clearly required to fit absorption features observed in the Chandra spectrum. The components have a difference of 29 in ionization parameter and 3 in column density. The presence of the low ionization component is evidenced by an Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (UTA) produced by charge states VII to XIII. The high ionization phase is required by the presence of broad absorption features arising from sev…
Based upon QSO absorption line studies, galaxies at 0.3 < z < 1.0 are seen to have extended gaseous "halos". When the absorption lines are observed at high resolution, the velocity distribution of the absorbing gas gives clues as to where this gas actually arises in and around the galaxies. Cloud to cloud abundance ratios provide further clues, given that the ionization conditions and chemical evolution histories of outer halos clouds, spiral disk clouds, and clouds in elliptical galaxies are different. The key to interpreting the high redshift data is the Milky Way galaxy, the absorption line…
HE0141-3932 (zem=1.80) is a bright blue radio-quite quasar which reveals an emission line spectrum with an unusually weak Ly-alpha line. In addition, large redshift differences (Delta z=0.05) are observed between high ionization and low ionization emission lines. Absorption systems identified at z=1.78, 1.71, and 1.68 show mild oversolar metallicities (Z ~= 1-2Zsolar) and can be attributed to the associated gas clouds ejected from the circumnuclear region. The joint analysis of the emission and absorption lines leads to the conclusion that this quasar is seen almost pole-on. Its apparent lumin…
The red quasar 3C 212 (z=1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C 212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ~4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column N_H ~ 4 x 10^21 cm^-2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionizati…
(Abridged) Using a 100 ks XMM-Newton exposure of NGC 4051, we show that the time evolution of the ionization state of the X-ray absorbers in response to the rapid and highly variable X-ray continuum constrains all the main physical and geometrical properties of an AGN Warm Absorber wind. The absorber consists of two different ionization components. By tracking the response in the opacity of the gas in each component to changes in the ionizing continuum, we were able to constrain the electron density of the system. The measured densities require that the high and low ionization absorbing compon…
We present high spatial resolution X-ray spectroscopy of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the {\sl Chandra} observations. The X-ray emitting region of this remnant was divided into 38 $\times$ 34 pixels with a scale of 10$\arcsec$ $\times$ 10$\arcsec$ each. Spectra of 960 pixels were created and fitted with an absorbed two component non-equilibrium ionization model. With the spectral analysis results we obtained maps of absorbing column density, temperatures, ionization ages, and the abundances for Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca and Fe. The Si, S and possibly Ca abundance maps show obviously jet structu…
We consider the deconvolution of the thermal and the turbulent profiles for a pair of ions with different atomic weights under the condition that the lines are formed in an absorbing medium with fluctuating density and velocity fields. Our method is based on the entropy-regularized minimization (ERM) procedure. From synthetic spectra we found that the CII and SiII lines can be used to estimate the mean (density weighted) kinetic temperature with a sufficiently high accuracy (of about 10%) in a rather wide range of the ionization parameter, -6 < log U < -2. This is a generalization of a previou…
Signatures of warm absorbers are seen in soft X-ray spectra of about half of all Seyfert1 galaxies observed and in some quasars and blazars. We use the thermal equilibrium curve to study the influence of the shape of the ionizing continuum, density and the chemical composition of the absorbing gas on the existence and nature of the warm absorbers. We describe circumstances in which a stable warm absorber can exist as a multiphase medium or one with continuous variation in pressure. In particular we find the following results: i) the warm absorber exists only if the spectral index of the X-ray …
X-ray absorption and emission lines now serve as powerful diagnostics of the outflows from active galaxies. Detailed X-ray line studies of outflows have recently been enabled for a significant number of active galaxies via the grating spectrometers on Chandra and XMM-Newton. We will review some of the recent X-ray findings on active galaxy outflows from an observational perspective. We also describe some future prospects. X-ray absorption lines from H-like and He-like ions of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, and S are often seen. A wide range of ionization parameter appears to be present in the absorb…
We present FUSE and STIS observations of the IGM toward PG 0953+415 (z_em = 0.239). An O VI system at z = 0.06807 is detected in H I Lya, Lyb, Lyg, O VI N V, C IV, and C III. The observations are modeled as a low density intervening gas with a metallicity of 0.4 (+0.6, -0.2) times solar in photoionization equilibrium with the ionizing extragalactic radiation. The best fit is achieved with an ionization parameter, logU = -1.35, which implies nH ~ 10-5 cm-3 and a path length of ~ 80 kpc through the absorbing gas. H I Lya absorption at z = 0.14232 spans a velocity range of 410 km s-1 with the str…
A consensus is developing on the nature of various populations of absorbers at different redshift regimes and in particular on their relationships to galaxies at those epochs. As one example we discuss the population of z < 1 MgII absorbers. Kinematic models are presented that show this population to be consistent with some combination of halo and disk kinematics and not with a pure disk or halo model. In contrast, the 2 < z < 3 CIV absorbers are likely to represent a mix of already formed halos and protogalactic clumps in the process of assembly. Clues could be provided by the level at which …
