We present an analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 985. The EPIC spectra present strong residuals to a single power-law model, indicating the presence of ionized absorbing gas and a soft excess. A broad-band fit to the EPIC and RGS spectra shows that the continuum can be well fit with a power-law and a blackbody component. The RGS can be modeled either with two or three absorption components. In the two absorber model the low-ionization one, accounts for the presence of the Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (Fe VII-XIII), and the high ionization component is required by the presence of several Fe L-shell transitions. The data suggest the presence of a third ionized component with higher ionization, so that the Fe L-shell absorption features are produced by two different components (one producing absorption by Fe XVII-XX, and the other absorption by Fe XX-XXII). However, the presence of the third absorbing component cannot be detected by means of an isolated absorption line in a significant way, so we consider this detection only as tentative. Interestingly, all ionization components have similar kinematics. In addition, whether two or three absorbers are considered, the components appear to be in pressure balance. These results give further support to the idea that warm absorbers in AGN consist of a two or three-phase medium. We note that, while in the model with only two absorbers one of them (the high ionization component) lies on an unstable branch of the thermal equilibrium curve, in the model with three absorbers all of the components lie on stable branches of the curve. This gives further plausibility to a multi-phase absorber.
A modification of the popular unification model for Seyfert galaxies is proposed, which takes into account recent observational findings on the statistical properties of both type 1 and type 2 Seyferts. In the proposed scenario, Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies are those sources observed through compact, thick matter (the `torus'), while Compton-thin/intermediate Seyfert galaxies are obscured by dust lanes at larger distances.
X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 1 galaxies often reveal absorption edges resulting from photoionized gas along the line-of-sight to the central engine, the so-called warm absorber. I discuss how recent ASCA observations of warm absorber variability in MCG-6-30-15 can lead us to reject a one-zone model and, instead, have suggested a multi-zone warm absorber. The evidence for dust within the warm absorbers of MCG-6-30-15 and IRAS 13349+2438 is also addressed. These dusty warm absorbers reveal themselves by significantly reddening the optical flux without heavily absorbing the soft X-ray photons. T…
We present evidence that the outflowing UV absorbers in Seyfert 1 galaxies arise primarily in their inner narrow (emission) line regions (NLRs), based on similarities in their locations, kinematics, and physical conditions. 1) Hubble Space Telescope observations show that nearly all Seyfert galaxies have bright, central knots of [O III] emission in their NLRs with radii of tens of parsecs. These sizes are consistent with most previous estimates of the distances of UV (and X-ray) absorbers from their central continuum sources, and a recently obtained reliable distance of ~25 pc for a UV absorbe…
We discuss the origin of the ``dusty lukewarm absorber'', which we previously identified in the reddened Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC 3227 and Akn 564. This absorber is characterized by saturated UV absorption lines (C IV, N V) near the systemic velocity of the host galaxy, and is likely responsible for reddening both the continuum and the emission lines (including those from the narrow-line region) from these Seyferts. From a large sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find that continuum reddening (as measured by UV color) tends to increase with inclination of the host galaxy. Furthermore, reddened, in…
We present a study of the X-ray properties of several NLS1 galaxies, focusing on their warm absorbers. In the first part, we discuss properties of dusty and dust-free warm absorbers in NLS1s, and study their potential contribution to high-ionization optical iron lines. In the second part, we summarize our work on the exceptional spectral variability of the NLS1 galaxy RX J0134.3-4258 (from Gamma about -4.4 in the ROSAT all-sky survey observation, to about -2.2 in our subsequent pointed observation).
We present results of the photoionization code IRIS, which calculates the spectrum emitted by the Warm Absorber (WA) in Seyfert 1 galaxies for a large grid of parameters (density, column density, ionization parameter...). We show that in Seyfert 1s, coronal lines Fe X, Fe XI, Fe XIV...), whose emission region shares common characteristics with the WA, could be formed in the WA. Unlike the absorption edges, such as those of O VII and O VIII observed in soft X-rays which are produced by the WA, these lines strongly constrain the physical parameters of the WA, especially the hydrogen density. Ind…
The connection between the coronal lines and the warm absorber is examined systematically. In an earlier work it was found that the coronal line emitting plasma and the warm absorber gas share the same density and temperature. If there is a connection between the warm absorber gas and the forbidden high-ionization line (FHIL) plasma, one can use the profiles of coronal lines to derive the kinematics and dynamics of the warm absorber due to the high spectral resolution available in the optical range. Further support for a connection is a correlation between the equivalent width of [Fe X] 6375 a…
We present preliminary results from a study with XMM-Newton of the galactic serendipitous sources in a sample of 28 nearby Seyfert galaxies (with D < 22 Mpc). We concentrate here on a subset of four galaxies, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, and NGC4565. In these galaxies we found six ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models. We shortly discuss the results obtained so far.
We collate the results of recent high resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations of 23 AGN, and use the resulting information to try to provide answers to some of the main open questions about warm absorbers: where do they originate, what effect do they have on their host galaxies, and what is their importance within the energetics and dynamics of the AGN system as a whole? We find that the warm absorbers of nearby Seyferts and certain QSOs are most likely to originate in outflows from the dusty torus, and that the kinetic luminosity of these outflows accounts for well under 1% of the bolomet…
Warm absorbers are an important new tool for investigating the conditions within the central regions of active galaxies. They have been observed in ~50% of the well-studied Seyfert galaxies and have also been detected in quite a number of Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1). Here, we present a study of the X-ray properties of several NLSy1s with focus on their warm absorbers: (a) An analysis of all ROSAT PSPC observations of NGC 4051 including new ones is performed, which reveals variability by a factor ~30 in count rate and much less variability in the warm absorber parameters. (b) The pos…
The Optical Monitor telescope (Mason et al. 2001) on XMM-Newton provides an exciting multi-wavelength dimension to observations of Active Galactic Nuclei. Here we present ultraviolet images, taken with the OM UVW2 filter (140-270 nm), of various Seyfert galaxies, some of which have never been observed in this waveband before. The images show UV emission from both the active nucleus and the host galaxy. The distribution of UV emission in the galaxy shows where star formation is occurring, thus giving us clues as to the evolution of the host galaxy and perhaps its relationship to the Seyfert Nuc…
A 100ks XMM-Newton observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 offers a unique opportunity to explore the complexity of its X-ray spectrum. We find the \~3-8 keV continuum to be dominated by reflection from cold matter, with fluorescent K-shell lines detected from Ni, Fe, Ca, Ar, S, Si and Mg. At higher energies an intrinsic power law continuum, with canonical Seyfert 1 photon index, is seen through a near-Compton-thick cold absorber. A soft excess below \~3 keV is found to be dominated by line emission from an outflow of `warm' gas, photo-ionised and photo-excited by the intrinsically st…
We have examined simultaneous X-ray and optical light curves of a sample of eight nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies observed using the EPIC X-ray cameras and Optical Monitor on board XMM. The observations span ~1 day and revealed optical variability in four of the eight objects studied. In all cases, the X-ray variability amplitude exceeded that of the optical both in fractional and absolute luminosity terms. No clearly significant correlations were detected between wavebands using cross correlation analysis. We conclude that, in three of the four objects in which optical variability was detected, rep…
We report on the XMM-Newton observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, MCG+8-11-11. Data from the EPIC/p-n camera, the Reflection Gratings Spectrometers (RGS) and the Optical Monitor (OM) have been analyzed. The p-n spectrum is well fitted by a power law, a spectrally unresolved Fe Kalpha line, a Compton reflection component (whose large value, when compared to the iron line equivalent width, suggests iron underabundance), and absorption by warm material. Absorption lines are apparent in the RGS spectra, but their identification is uncertain and would require large matter velocities. The UV f…
An unbiased estimate of the average intrinsic X-ray properties and column density distribution of Seyfert galaxies in the local Universe is crucial to validate unified models of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and to synthesis models for the X-ray background. We present here preliminary results obtained from an on-going XMM-Newton study (~250 ks awarded in the EPIC GT) on a well-defined, statistically complete, and significant sample of nearby Seyfert galaxies.
In this paper we present the current status of a XMM-Newton program to observe an optically-defined, complete and unbiased sample of Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies. The main goal of this project is the measurement of the occurrence rate of transition between transmission- (i.e.: Compton-thin), and reflection-dominated spectral states. These transitions potentially provide information on the distribution of the obscuring matter surrounding the nucleus, and on the duty-cycle of the AGN activity. With about 2/3 of the whole sample being observed, we detected 1 further transition out of 8 observ…
We explore the effects of UV absorbing material on the shape of the EUV continuum radiation emitted by the active galactic nucleus, and on the relative strengths of emission lines, formed in the narrow line regions of Seyfert galaxies, excited by this continuum. Within a sample of Seyfert 1.5 galaxies, objects with flatter soft X-ray slopes tend to have lower values of He II 4686/H-beta, which implies a correlation between the observed spectral energy distribution of the ionizing continuum and the narrow emission line strengths. Objects with the flattest soft X-ray continua tend to possess hig…
Previous observations of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0419-577 have found its X-ray spectrum to range from that of a typical Seyfert 1 with 2-10 keV power law index Gamma ~ 1.9 to a much flatter power law of Gamma ~ 1.5 or less. We report here a new XMM-Newton observation which allows the low state spectrum to be studied in much greater detail than hitherto. We find a very hard spectrum (Gamma ~ 1.0), which exhibits broad features that can be modelled with the addition of an extreme relativistic Fe K emission line or with partial covering of the underlying continuum by a substantial column…
The Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) contains 150 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, most of them previously unknown. We present here the study of the X-ray emission from two of these active galaxies (SDSS J030639.57+000343.2 and SDSS J141519.50-003021.6), based upon XMM-Newton observations. The spectral and timing characteristics of the two sources are presented and compared against the typical properties of known NLS1 galaxies. We found that these two NLS1 are within the dispersion range of the typical values of this class of AGN, although with some interesting f…
We present the main results of a deep timing analysis (in the 0.2-10 keV energy band) of the bright Seyfert-1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 performed on XMM-Newton data. The light-curves and hardness ratios show that the source has large flux and spectral variations on time-scales of a few kiloseconds at most. From the analysis of both the power spectra and the structure function of the light curves we detected a relevant source variability between time-scales of ~0.3 and ~10 ks. Based on this result, we extracted a characteristic size of the X-ray emitting region of the order of 10^13 cm.
Competing models for broad spectral features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert I galaxy Mrk766 are tested against data from a 130 ks XMM-Newton observation. A model including relativistically broadened Ly-alpha emission lines of OVIII, NVII and CVI is a better fit to 0.3-2 keV XMM RGS data than a dusty warm absorber. Moreover, the measured depth of neutral iron absorption lines in the spectrum is inconsistent with the magnitude of the iron edge required to produce the continuum break at 17-18Angstroms in the dusty warm absorber model. The relativistic emission line model can reproduce …
We present soft X-ray results from observations with the Chandra HETGS of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with Chandra and HST/STIS. We also briefly discuss the possibility of absorption due to neutral Fe embedded in the warm absorber of NGC 4593 versus an interpretation of the data in terms soft X-ray relativi…
We report on a long (100 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Arakelian 120. The source previously showed no signs of intrinsic reddening in its infrared-ultraviolet continuum and previous observations had shown no evidence for ionized absorption in either the ultraviolet or X-ray bands. The new XMM-Newton RGS data place tight limits on the presence of an ionized X-ray absorber and confirm that the X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 is essentially unmodified by intervening matter. Thus Ark 120 can be considered a `bare' Seyfert 1 nucleus. This observation therefore offers a clean v…
We examine the XMM X-ray spectrum of the LINER-AGN NGC 7213, which is best fit with a power law, K-alpha emission lines from Fe I, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI and a soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma with kT=0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV. We find a luminosity of 7x10^(-4) L_Edd, and a lack of soft X-ray excess emission, suggesting a truncated accretion disc. NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties, between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. This supports the notion of a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre thr…
The XMM-Newton data presented here are the first X-ray observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4138. Although the galaxy has been pointed by ROSAT-HRI, it was not detected, with a flux upper limit of about 1.1x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 0.2-2.4 keV energy band. XMM-Newton performed the observation on 26 November 2001. The source is detected for the first time in X-rays with F[0.2-2.4]=1.0x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1, in agreement with the upper limit of ROSAT. The source spectrum is typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find heavy obscuration (N_H about 8x10^22 cm^-2) and a flat photon index (1.6). The…
We present a detailed re-analysis of the two {\it ASCA} Performance Verification observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15. Confirming the results of Fabian et al. (1994), we find definite evidence for the {\sc O\,vii} and {\sc O\,viii} K-shell absorption edges of the warm absorber and a doubling of the warm absorber column density within the 3 weeks separating the two observations. No intra-day {\it flux-correlated} variability of the warm absorber is found. However, we report the discovery of an `event' in which the warm absorber parameters temporarily change for \sim10\,000\th…
In the recent literature on AGNs it has been often reported that spectra of Seyfert 1 Galaxies show resonant absorption lines of Fe K which are redshifted from the rest frame position. Such lines are often found with marginal significance but, if real, could potentially open up new avenues to study the circumnuclear gas in the black hole environment. It is also extremely important to take them into account in X-ray spectral analysis because of the influence they have in the correct estimation of spectral parameters, Fe K alpha line in primis. An XMM-Newton observation of Mrk 335 is reported he…
We present a spectral analysis of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1, focusing on the characteristics of the ionised absorbers as observed with XMM-Newton in 2005. The soft X-ray spectrum shows absorption by two components of ionised gas with a similar column density (N_H~10^{21} cm^{-2}) and ionisation parameters logξ~0 and 2.5. Comparing this observation with a 2002 XMM-Newton data set, we see a clear anti-correlation between the X-ray ionisation parameter xi_X and the 0.1-10 keV luminosity. Viable explanations for this effect include transient clouds or filaments crossing the line …
We present XMM-Newton observations of Mrk 359, the first Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy discovered. Even among NLS1s, Mrk 359 is an extreme case with extraordinarily narrow optical emission lines. The XMM-Newton data show that Mrk 359 has a significant soft X-ray excess which displays only weak absorption and emission features. The (2-10) keV continuum, including reflection, is flatter than the typical NLS1, with Gamma approximately 1.84. A strong emission line of equivalent width approximately 200 eV is also observed, centred near 6.4 keV. We fit this emission with two line components of approx…
The bright Seyfert 1 galaxy H1419+480 (z~0.072), whose X-ray colours from earlier HEAO-1 and ROSAT missions suggested a complex X-ray spectrum, has been observed with XMM-Newton. The EPIC spectrum above 2 keV is well fit by a power-law with photon index Γ=1.84\pm 0.01 and an Fe Ka line of equivalent width ~250 eV. At softer energies, a decrement with respect to this model extending from 0.5 to 1 keV is clearly detected. After trying a number of models, we find that the best fit corresponds to OVII absorption at the emission redshift, plus a 2-sigma detection of OVIII absorption. A photoionised…
We present the results of timing analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300. The hard X-ray spectrum above 2 keV consists of a Compton-thin-absorbed power law, as is often seen in Seyfert 2 galaxies. We clearly detected rapid time variability on a time scale of about 1000 s from the light curve above 2 keV. The excess variance of the time variability (sigma2_RMS) is calculated to be ~0.12, and the periodogram of the light curve is well represented by a power law function with a slope of 1.75. In contrast with previous results from Seyfert 2 nuclei, these variabilit…
We selected a sample of eight bright unobscured (at least at the iron line energy) Seyfert Galaxies observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX, taking advantage of the complementary characteristics of the two missions. The main results of our analysis can be summarized as follows: narrow neutral iron lines are confirmed to be an ubiquitous component in Seyfert spectra; none of the analyzed sources shows unambiguously a broad relativistic iron line; all the sources of our sample (with a single exception) show the presence of a Compton reflection component; emission lines from ionized ir…
We have discovered a correlation between the X-ray absorbing column densities within Seyfert galaxies and the relative alignment between the central engines and their host galactic disks. This correlation carries several implications for Seyfert unification models. (1) In addition to small-scale circumnuclear absorbers, there are absorbing systems associated with the host galactic plane that are capable of obscuring the broad line region emission. (2) The misalignment between the central engine axis and that of the host galaxy arises on intermediate scales between these absorbers. (3) The smal…
The high-frequency-peaked BL Lac, MS0205.7+3509 was observed twice with XMM-Newton. Both X-ray spectra are synchrotron-dominated, with mean 0.2--10keV fluxes of 2.80+/-0.01 and 3.34+/-0.02 E-12 erg/cm^2/s. The X-ray spectra are well fit by a power-law with absorption above the Galactic value, however no absorption edges are detected, implying a low metallicity absorber (Z_\sun = 0.04(+0.03)(-0.01)) or an absorber with redshift above one (best-fit z=2.1 for an absorber with solar abundances). In either case the absorbing column density must be ~9E21 cm^-2. A new optical spectrum is presented, w…
We present XMM-Newton EPIC observations of warm absorbers in the quasars PG 1114+445 and PG 1309+355, both of which exhibit evidence for absorption by warm material in the line-of-sight. We find the absorption in PG 1114+445 to be in two phases, a `hot' phase with a log ionisation parameter xi of 2.57, and a `cooler' phase with log xi of 0.83; an unresolved transition array (UTA) of M-shell iron is observed in the cooler phase. The absorption in this quasar is similar to that observed in the Seyfert 1 NGC 3783. The absorption in PG 1309+355 consists of a single phase, with log xi of 1.87. The …
XMM-Newton observations of the NLS1 Markarian 896 are presented. Over the 2-10 keV band, an iron emission line, close to 6.4 keV, is seen. The line is just resolved and has an equivalent width of ~170 eV. The broad-band spectrum is well modelled by a power law slope of gamma ~ 2.03, together with two blackbody components to fit the soft X-ray excess. Using a more physical two-temperature Comptonisation model, a good fit is obtained for an input photon distribution of kT ~ 60eV and Comptonising electron temperatures of ~0.3 and 200 keV. The soft excess cannot be explained purely through the rep…
We present the spectral analysis of an early XMM-Newton observation of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 509. We find the hard (2-10 keV) continuum slope, including reflection, to be somewhat flatter ($Γ=1.75$) than for a typical BLS1. The most obvious feature in the hard X-ray spectrum is a narrow emission line near 6.4 keV, with an equivalent width of 50 eV. The energy and strength of this line is consistent with fluorescence from `neutral' iron in the molecular torus, and we note the emerging ubiquity of this feature in XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies over a …
We present XMM-Newton observations of four BL Lac objects (1H1219+301, H1426+428, Markarian 501 and PKS 0548-322), which have been found with past X-ray missions to contain evidence of broad soft X-ray absorption features. Observations with the high resolution Reflection Grating Spectrometers on XMM-Newton provide the best chance yet of investigating these features. No broad absorption features are observed in any of the objects. Neither do we find convincing evidence for narrow emission and absorption lines in the RGS spectra. We discuss the history of observations of broad absorption feature…
There are several Seyfert galaxies for which there is a discrepancy between the small column of neutral hydrogen deduced from X-ray observations and the much greater column derived from the reddening of the optical/UV emission lines and continuum. The standard paradigm has the dust within the highly ionized gas which produces O~VII and O~VIII absorption edges (i.e., a ``dusty warm absorber''). We present an alternative model in which the dust exists in a component of gas in which hydrogen has been stripped, but which is at too low an ionization state to possess significant columns of O~VII and…
We have used X-ray spectra to measure attenuating columns in a large sample of Seyfert galaxies. Over 30 of these sources have resolved radio jets, allowing the relative orientation of the nucleus and host galaxy to be constrained. We have discovered that the distribution of absorbing columns is strongly correlated with the relative orientation of the Seyfert structures. This result is inconsistent with unification models including only a torus and is instead most readily explained if a second absorber is included: in addition to a Compton-thick, parsec-scale torus there would also be a larger…
We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (B<12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (Delta > 0 deg.) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the ``typical'' Sey…
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using UV spectra from the HST/STIS and FUSE, obtained 2002 May as part of a set of contemporaneous observations that included Chandra/HETGS spectra. In our analysis of the Chandra spectra, we determined that the soft X-ray absorber was the source of the saturated UV lines of O VI, C IV, and N V associated with the absorption feature at a radial velocity of ~ -500 km/sec, which we referred to as component D+E. In the present work, we have derived tighter constrains on the the line-of-sight covering facto…
We present a detailed analysis of the soft X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 509 taken with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. An underlying power-law continuum and three warm absorber phases provide a good fit to the data along with a number of broad and narrow emission lines. Our three warm absorber phases each have different ionization parameters and column densities. We identify a low ionization, log xi=0.89, high outflow velocity phase producing an Fe M-shell UTA feature along with absorption from O VI and N VI. There is an intermediate phase, log xi=2.14, show…
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the bright, narrow-line, ultrasoft Seyfert 1 galaxy Ton S180. The 0.3-10 keV X-ray spectrum is steep and curved, showing a steep slope above 2.5 keV (Gamma ~ 2.3) and a smooth, featureless excess of emission at lower energies. The spectrum can be adequately parameterised using a simple double power-law model. The source is strongly variable over the course of the observation but shows only weak spectral variability, with the fractional variability amplitude remaining approximately constant over more than a decade in energy. The curved continuum shape and…
We report the discovery of strong soft X-ray emission lines and a hard continuum above 2 keV in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 during an extremely low X-ray flux state. Mrk 335 was observed for 22 ks by XMM-Newton in July 2007 as a Target of Opportunity to examine it in its X-ray low-flux state, which was discovered with Swift. Long-term light curves suggest that this is the lowest flux state this AGN has ever been seen in. However, Mrk 335 is still sufficiently bright that its X-ray properties can be studied in detail. The X-ray continuum spectrum is very complex and requires severa…
We report on the first XMM-Newton observation of the highly X-ray variable, radio-quiet, Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 obtained during the guaranteed time programme with a 64 ks exposure. The most remarkable spectral feature is a sharp drop, by a factor ~5, in the spectrum at 8 keV. This is a similar, but stronger, feature to that which we found in 1H0707-495. Significant flattening of the hard X-ray spectrum occurs when the source flux decreases. The flattening of the spectrum can be modelled as an increase in the column density of the absorbing material and/or its covering fra…
We present new UV spectra of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, which we obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at high spectral resolution, in conjunction with simultaneous Chandra X-ray Observatory spectra. Taking advantage of the low UV continuum and broad emission-line fluxes, we have determined that the deepest UV absorption component covers at least a portion of the inner, high-ionization narrow-line region (NLR). We find nonunity covering factors in the cores of several kinematic components, which increase the column density measurements of N V and C IV by fac…
We report the first detection of a sharp spectral feature in a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy. Using XMM-Newton we have observed 1H0707-495 and find a drop in flux by a factor of more than 2 at a rest-frame energy of ~7 keV without any detectable narrow Fe K alpha line emission. The energy of this feature suggests a connection with the neutral iron K photoelectric edge, but the lack of any obvious absorption in the spectrum at lower energies makes the interpretation challenging. We explore two alternative explanations for this unusual spectral feature: (i) partial covering absorption by clouds o…
The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber i…
We present an XMM-Newton observation of NGC 7469, including studies of the X-ray and UV variability, 0.2-10 keV spectral continuum, Fe K-alpha emission line and the first-ever high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the soft X-ray warm absorber. We compare the properties of this X-ray warm absorber with the UV warm absorber as seen in a FUSE observation one year previously. The 0.2-10 keV spectral continuum is best fitted by a power-law plus two blackbody model. An Fe K-alpha emission line is visible which consists of a single narrow component and is well-modelled by a simple gaussian. Narrow absorp…
We present a XMM-Newton observation of Markarian 304, a Seyfert 1 galaxy at z = 0.066. The EPIC data show that MKN 304 is affected by heavy (Nh ~10^{23} cm{-2}) obscuration due to ionized gas. A two-phase warm absorber provides an adequate parameterization of this gas. The ionization parameter of the two components is ξ~6 erg/cm2/s and ξ~90 erg/cm2/s, respectively. The observed continuum photon index (Gamma ~1.9) is typical for Seyfert 1 galaxies. Two significant emission lines are detected at 0.57 keV and 6.4 keV, respectively. The former is mostly likely due to He-like oxygen triplet emissio…
ASCA X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 04575-7537 is presented. The main result is the presence of a significant iron edge at a rest energy of 7.13^+0.21_-0.16 keV. The spectrum is flat (Gamma = 1.5) with a substantial absorption Nh = 10^22 cm^-2 and does not require any reflection component. There is also evidence of a narrow Fe Kalpha emission line, whose rest energy (E = 6.35^+0.08_ -0.03 keV) and equivalent width (EW = 130+-50 eV) suggest that the line originates from thick and cold matter. The intensity of the line and, in particular, the depth of the iron edge are too …
We present XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1 AGN H0557-385. We have conducted a study into the warm absorber present in this source, and using high-resolution RGS data we find that the absorption can be characterised by two phases: a phase with log ionisation parameter xi of 0.50 (where xi is in units of ergs cm/s) and a column of 0.2e21 cm^-2, and a phase with log xi of 1.62 and a column of 1.3e22 cm^-2. An iron K alpha line is detected. Neutral absorption is also present in the source, and we discuss possible origins for this. On the assumption that the ionised absorbers originate as …
The Chandra HETGS spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 show numerous narrow, unresolved (FWHM < 200 km/s) absorption lines from a wide range of ionization states of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S, Ar, and Fe. The initial analysis of these data, presented in Lee et al. (2001), shows that a dusty warm absorber model adequately explains the spectral features > 0.48 keV (< 26 A). We attribute previous reports of an apparently highly redshifted O VII edge to the neutral Fe L absorption complex and the O VII resonance series (by transitions higher than He $γ$; He $α,β,γ$ are also seen at lower energies…
The first X-ray observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5252 is reported. ASCA collected $\sim 4000$ photons/detector enough to perform an accurate spectral analysis of this source. The luminosity of NGC5252 is L$_{\rm X}$(0.7-10 keV) $\simeq 2.6 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, typical of a Seyfert 1 galaxy. A simple description of the spectrum with a single power law is ruled out by the SIS data which shows a strong soft excess at E $\lsimeq$ 1.2 keV. The spectrum is best fitted by models assuming either partial covering of the central source or scattering of the X-ray continuum. The best-fit pa…
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained in 2000 June with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915--1185 Angstroms at a resolution of 20 km/s. The spectrum shows a weak continuum and emission from O VI, C III, and He II. The FUSE data were obtained when the AGN was in a low state, which has revealed strong, narrow O VI emission lines. We also resolve intrinsic, associated absorption lines of O VI and the Lyman series. Several distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of 0…
We have examined the physical conditions in intrinsic UV-absorbing gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, using echelle spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We confirm the presence of the kinematic components detected in earlier GHRS observations as well as a new broad absorption feature at a radial velocity of -1680 km/s. The UV continuum of NGC 4151 decreased by a factor of 4 over the previous two years, and we argue the changes in the column density of the low ionization absorption lines associated with the broad component at -490 km/s reflect the decrease in …
(Abridged) Using a 100 ks XMM-Newton exposure of NGC 4051, we show that the time evolution of the ionization state of the X-ray absorbers in response to the rapid and highly variable X-ray continuum constrains all the main physical and geometrical properties of an AGN Warm Absorber wind. The absorber consists of two different ionization components. By tracking the response in the opacity of the gas in each component to changes in the ionizing continuum, we were able to constrain the electron density of the system. The measured densities require that the high and low ionization absorbing compon…
We present the results from an XMM-Newton observation (January 24, 2001) of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 198-G24 (z=0.045). We found that this Seyfert has an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of about 10^44 erg s-1. This source shows no intrinsic absorption in addition to the Galactic absorption (N_{H}~3 x 10^20 cm-2). We found both with EPIC and RGS that this source possesses significantly steeper spectra below ~ 1.5-2 keV than observed at higher X-ray energies, the so-called soft X-ray excess. The RGS spectra reveal no significant narrow absorption lines suggesting that if there is a warm abs…
We present results from a half-day observation by XMM-Newton of the nucleus of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300. The X-ray spectrum of the nucleus consists of a heavily absorbed hard component dominating the 3--10 keV band and a soft component seen in the 0.2--2 keV band. In the hard band, the spectrum is well fitted by a power-law model with photon index of 1.83+/-0.08 attenuated by a Compton-thin absorber (N_H \simeq 2.2 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}). A narrow iron line is detected at 6.43_{-0.02}^{+0.01} keV with an equivalent width of ~150 eV; the line velocity width is marginally resolved to be …
