A vertex 2-coloring of a graph is said to be perfect with parameters $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1}^k$ if for every $i,j\in\{1,...,k\}$ every vertex of color $i$ is adjacent with exactly $a_{ij}$ vertices of color $j$. We consider the perfect 2-colorings of the distance-2 graph of the 24-cube $\{0,1\}^{24}$ with parameters $((20+c,256-c)(c,276-c))$ (i.e., with eigenvalue 20). We prove that such colorings exist for all $c$ from 1 to 128 except 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13 and do not exist for $c=1, 2, 4, 5, 7$. Keywords: perfect coloring, equitable partition, hypercube, halved n-cube
We study the continuous-time quantum walks on graphs in the adjacency algebra of the $n$-cube and its related distance regular graphs. For $k\geq 2$, we find graphs in the adjacency algebra of $(2^{k+2}-8)$-cube that admit instantaneous uniform mixing at time $π/2^k$ and graphs that have perfect state transfer at time $π/2^k$. We characterize the folded $n$-cubes, the halved $n$-cubes and the folded halved $n$-cubes whose adjacency algebra contains a complex Hadamard matrix. We obtain the same conditions for the characterization of these graphs admitting instantaneous uniform mixing.
Let $D\geq 3$ denote an integer. For any $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ let $w(x)$ denote the Hamming weight of $x$. Let $X$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb F_2^D$ consisting of all $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ with even $w(x)$. The $D$-dimensional halved cube $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ is a finite simple connected graph with vertex set $X$ and $x,y\in X$ are adjacent if and only if $w(x-y)=2$. Fix a vertex $x\in X$. The Terwilliger algebra $\mathcal T=\mathcal T(x)$ of $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ with respect to $x$ is the subalgebra of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by the adjacency matrix $A$ and the dual adjacency mat…
Let $\mathcal S$ be a family of subsets of a set $X$ of cardinality $m$ and $\text{VC-dim}(\mathcal S)$ be the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of $\mathcal S$. Haussler, Littlestone, and Warmuth (Inf. Comput., 1994) proved that if $G_1(\mathcal S)=(V,E)$ is the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_m$ induced by $\mathcal S$ (called the 1-inclusion graph of $\mathcal S$), then $\frac{|E|}{|V|}\le \text{VC-dim}({\mathcal S})$. Haussler (J. Combin. Th. A, 1995) presented an elegant proof of this inequality using the shifting operation. In this note, we adapt the shifting technique to prove that if $\mathca…
For an integer $n\geq 2$, the triangular graph has vertex set the $2$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and edge set the pairs of $2$-subsets intersecting at one point. Such graphs are known to be halved graphs of bipartite rectagraphs, which are connected triangle-free graphs in which every $2$-path lies in a unique quadrangle. We refine this result and provide a characterisation of connected locally triangular graphs as halved graphs of normal quotients of $n$-cubes. To do so, we study a parameter that generalises the concept of minimum distance for a binary linear code to arbitrary automorphism g…
Let $Q_d$ be the $d$-dimensional hypercube and $N=2^d$. We prove that the number of (proper) 4-colorings of $Q_d$ is asymptotically \[6e2^N,\] as was conjectured by Engbers and Galvin in 2012. The proof uses a combination of information theory (entropy) and isoperimetric ideas originating in work of Sapozhenko in the 1980's.
A 2-coloring of the n-cube in the n-dimensional Euclidean space can be considered as an assignment of weights of 1 or 0 to the vertices. Such a colored n-cube is said to be balanced if its center of mass coincides with its geometric center. Let $B_{n,2k}$ be the number of balanced 2-colorings of the n-cube with 2k vertices having weight 1. Palmer, Read and Robinson conjectured that for $n\geq 1$, the sequence $\{B_{n,2k}\}_{k=0, 1 ... 2^{n-1}}$ is symmetric and unimodal. We give a proof of this conjecture. We also propose a conjecture on the log-concavity of $B_{n,2k}$ for fixed k, and by prob…
Let $χ'_d(n,q)$ (resp. $χ_d(n,q)$) denote the minimum number of colors necessary to color a $q$-ary $n$-cube so that no two vertices that are at a distance at most $d$ (resp. exactly $d$) get the same color. These two problems were proposed in the study of scalability of optical networks. In this paper, we provide upper and lower bounds on $χ'_d(n,q)$ and $χ_d(n,q)$ when $q$ is a prime power.
A coloring of the Boolean $n$-cube is called perfect if, for every vertex $x$, the collection of the colors of the neighbors of $x$ depends only on the color of $x$. A Boolean function is called correlation-immune of degree $n-m$ if it takes the value 1 the same number of times for each $m$-face of the Boolean $n$-cube. In the present paper it is proven that each Boolean function $χ^S$ ($S\subset E^n$) satisfies the inequality $${\rm nei}(S)+ 2({\rm cor}(S)+1)(1-ρ(S))\leq n,$$ where ${\rm cor}(S)$ is the maximum degree of the correlation immunity of $χ^S$, ${\rm nei} (S)= \frac{1}{|S|}\sum\lim…
A coloring of the $q$-ary $n$-dimensional cube (hypercube) is called perfect if, for every $n$-tuple $x$, the collection of the colors of the neighbors of $x$ depends only on the color of $x$. A Boolean-valued function is called correlation-immune of degree $n-m$ if it takes the value 1 the same number of times for each $m$-dimensional face of the hypercube. Let $f=χ^S$ be a characteristic function of some subset $S$ of hypercube. In the present paper it is proven the inequality $ρ(S)q({\rm cor}(f)+1)\leq α(S)$, where ${\rm cor}(f)$ is the maximum degree of the correlation immunity of $f$, $α(…
A well known generalization of Alon's "splitting nacklace theorem" by Longueville and Zivaljevic states that every k-colored n-dimensional cube can be fairly split using only k cuts in each dimension. Here we prove that for every t there exist a finite coloring (with at least (t+4)^d - (t+3)^d + (t+2)^d - 2^d + d(t+2) +3 different colors) of R^n such that no n-dimensional cube can be fairly split using at most t cuts in each dimension. In particular there is a finite coloring of R^n such that no two disjoint n-dimensional cubes have the same measure of each color.
It is proved that if we partition a $d$-dimensional cube into $n^d$ small cubes and color the small cubes into $m+1$ colors then there exists a monochromatic connected component consisting of at least $f(d, m) n^{d-m}$ small cubes.
Suppose a d-dimensional lattice cube of size n^d is colored in several colors so that no face of its triangulation (subdivision of the standard partition into n^d small cubes) is colored in m+2 colors. Then one color is used at least f(d,m)*n^(d-m) times.
For every even positive integer $k\ge 4$ let $f(n,k)$ denote the minimim number of colors required to color the edges of the $n$-dimensional cube $Q_n$, so that the edges of every copy of $k$-cycle $C_k$ receive $k$ distinct colors. Faudree, Gyárfás, Lesniak and Schelp proved that $f(n,4)=n$ for $n=4$ or $n>5$. We consider larger $k$ and prove that if $k \equiv 0$ (mod 4), then there are positive constants $c_1, c_2$ depending only on $k$ such that $$c_1n^{k/4} < f(n,k) < c_2 n^{k/4}.$$ Our upper bound uses an old construction of Bose and Chowla of generalized Sidon sets. For $k \equiv 2$ (mod…
We construct perfect $2$-colorings of the $12$-hypercube that attain our recent bound on the dimension of arbitrary correlation immune functions. We prove that such colorings with parameters $(x,12-x,4+x,8-x$) exist if $x=0$, $2$, $3$ and do not exist if $x=1$. This is a translation into English of the original paper by D. G. Fon-Der-Flaass, "Perfect colorings of the $12$-cube that attain the bound on correlation immunity", published in Russian in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, vol. 4 (2007) 292-295.
In this paper we study threshold coloring of graphs, where the vertex colors represented by integers are used to describe any spanning subgraph of the given graph as follows. Pairs of vertices with near colors imply the edge between them is present and pairs of vertices with far colors imply the edge is absent. Not all planar graphs are threshold-colorable, but several subclasses, such as trees, some planar grids, and planar graphs without short cycles can always be threshold-colored. Using these results we obtain unit-cube contact representation of several subclasses of planar graphs. Variant…
Let $χ_{\bar{k}}(n)$ be the number of colors required to color the $n$-dimensional hypercube such that no two vertices with the same color are at a distance at most $k$. In other words, $χ_{\bar{k}}(n)$ is the minimum number of binary codes with minimum distance at least $k+1$ required to partition the $n$-dimensional Hamming space. By giving an explicit coloring, it is shown that $χ_{\bar{2}}(8)=13$.
In interconnection networks, matching preclusion is a measure of robustness when there is a link failure. Let $G$ be a graph of even order. The matching preclusion number $mp(G)$ is defined as the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a subgraph without perfect matchings. Many interconnection networks are super matched, that is, their optimal matching preclusion sets are precisely those induced by a single vertex. In this paper, we obtain general results of vertex-transitive graphs including many known networks. A $k$-regular connected vertex-transitive graph has matching preclusio…
A cube-like graph is a Cayley graph for the elementary abelian group of order $2^n$. In studies of the chromatic number of cube-like graphs, the $k$th power of the $n$-dimensional hypercube, $Q_n^k$, is frequently considered. This coloring problem can be considered in the framework of coding theory, as the graph $Q_n^k$ can be constructed with one vertex for each binary word of length $n$ and edges between vertices exactly when the Hamming distance between the corresponding words is at most $k$. Consequently, a proper coloring of $Q_n^k$ corresponds to a partition of the $n$-dimensional binary…
The distinguishing number of a graph G, denoted D(G), is the minimum number of colors such that there exists a coloring of the vertices of G where no nontrivial graph automorphism is color-preserving. In this paper, we show that the distinguishing number of p-th graph power of the n-dimensional hypercube is 2 whenever 2 < p < n-1. This completes the study of the distinguishing number of hypercube powers. We also compute the distinguishing number of the augmented cube, a variant of the hypercube, answering an open question.

For an undirected, simple, finite, connected graph $G$, we denote by $V(G)$ and $E(G)$ the sets of its vertices and edges, respectively. A function $φ:E(G)\rightarrow \{1,...,t\}$ is called a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$, if adjacent edges are colored differently and each of $t$ colors is used. The least value of $t$ for which there exists a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is denoted by $χ'(G)$. For any graph $G$, and for any integer $t$ satisfying the inequality $χ'(G)\leq t\leq |E(G)|$, we denote by $α(G,t)$ the set of all proper edge $t$-colorings of $G$. Let us also defi…
Can we color the $n^3$ cells of an $n\times n\times n$ cube $L$ with $n^2$ colors in such a way that each layer parallel to each face contains each color exactly once and that the coloring is symmetric so that $L_{ij\ell}=L_{j\ell i}=L_{\ell ij}$ for distinct $i,j,\ell \in \{1,\dots,n\}$, and $L_{iij}=L_{jj i}, L_{iji}=L_{jij}, L_{ij j}=L_{jii}$ for $i,j\in \{1,\dots,n\}$? Using transportation networks, we show that such a coloring is possible if and only if $n\equiv 0,2 \mod 3$ (with two exceptions, $n=1$ and $n\neq 3$). Motivated by the designs of experiments, the study of these objects (wit…
In this paper, we study the following two hypercube coloring problems: Given $n$ and $d$, find the minimum number of colors, denoted as $χ'_{d}(n)$ (resp. $χ_{d}(n)$), needed to color the vertices of the $n$-cube such that any two vertices with Hamming distance at most $d$ (resp. exactly $d$) have different colors. These problems originally arose in the study of the scalability of optical networks. Using methods in coding theory, we show that $χ'_{4}(2^{r+1}-1)=2^{2r+1}$, $χ'_{5}(2^{r+1})=4^{r+1}$ for any odd number $r\geq3$, and give two upper bounds on $χ_{d}(n)$. The first upper bound impro…
Feder and Subi conjectured that for any $2$-coloring of the edges of the $n$-dimensional cube, we can find an antipodal pair of vertices connected by a path that changes color at most once. We discuss the case of random colorings, and we prove the conjecture for a wide class of colorings. Our method can be applied to a more general problem, where $Q_n$ can be replaced by any graph $G$, the notion of antipodality by a fixed automorphism $ϕ\in Aut(G)$. Thus for any $2$-coloring of $E(G)$ we are looking for a pair of vertices $u,v$ such that $u= ϕ(v)$ and there is a path between them with as few …
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a function from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves adjacency. $H$-colorings encode graph theory notions such as independent sets and proper colorings, and are a natural setting for the study of hard-constraint models in statistical physics. We study the set of $H$-colorings of the even discrete torus ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$, the graph on vertex set ${0, ..., m-1}^d$ ($m$ even) with two strings adjacent if they differ by 1 (mod $m$) on one coordinate and agree on all others. This is a bipartite graph, with bipartition classes ${…
In this paper we study the existence of homomorphisms $G\to H$ using semidefinite programming. Specifically, we use the vector chromatic number of a graph, defined as the smallest real number $t \ge 2$ for which there exists an assignment of unit vectors $i\mapsto p_i$ to its vertices such that $\langle p_i, p_j\rangle\le -1/(t-1),$ when $i\sim j$. Our approach allows to reprove, without using the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, that for $n>2r$ the Kneser graph $K_{n:r}$ and the $q$-Kneser graph $qK_{n:r}$ are cores, and furthermore, that for $n/r = n'/r'$ there exists a homomorphism $K_{n:r}\to K_{n':…

An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,...,t$ is an interval $t$-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to each vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. A graph $G$ is interval colorable if $G$ has an interval $t$-coloring for some positive integer $t$. Let $\mathfrak{N}$ be the set of all interval colorable graphs. For a graph $G\in \mathfrak{N}$, the least and the greatest values of $t$ for which $G$ has an interval $t$-coloring are denoted by $w(G)$ and $W(G)$, respectively. In this paper we first show that if $G$ is an $r$-regular grap…
A proper $q$-coloring of a graph is an assignment of one of $q$ colors to each vertex of the graph so that adjacent vertices are colored differently. Sample uniformly among all proper $q$-colorings of a large discrete cube in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Does the random coloring obtained exhibit any large-scale structure? Does it have fast decay of correlations? We discuss these questions and the way their answers depend on the dimension $d$ and the number of colors $q$. The questions are motivated by statistical physics (anti-ferromagnetic materials, square ice), combinatorics (proper …

With a computer-aided approach based on the connection with equitable partitions, we establish the uniqueness of the orthogonal array OA$(1536,13,2,7)$, constructed in [D.G.Fon-Der-Flaass. Perfect $2$-Colorings of a Hypercube, Sib. Math. J. 48 (2007), 740-745] as an equitable partition of the $13$-cube with quotient matrix $[[0,13],[3,10]]$. By shortening the OA$(1536,13,2,7)$, we obtain $3$ inequivalent orthogonal arrays OA$(768,12,2,6)$, which is a complete classification for these parameters too. After our computing, the first parameters of unclassified binary orthogonal arrays OA$(N,n,2,t)…
We show that any binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $C_1$ is a part of an equitable partition (perfect coloring) $\{C_1,C_2,C_3,C_4\}$ of the $n$-cube with the parameters $((0,1,n-1,0)(1,0,n-1,0)(1,1,n-4,2)(0,0,n-1,1))$. Now the possibility to lengthen the code $C_1$ to a 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ is equivalent to the possibility to split the part $C_4$ into two distance-3 codes or, equivalently, to the biparticity of the graph of distances 1 and 2 of $C_4$. In any case, $C_1$ is uniquely embeddable in a twofold 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ with some structural restrictions, where by a…
We study properties of binary codes with parameters close to the parameters of 1-perfect codes. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m-1}, 4)$ code $C$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened extended Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable partition of the $n$-cube into six cells. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-4, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $D$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable family (but not a partition) from six cells. As a corollary, the codes $C$ and $D$ are completely semiregular; i.e., the weight distribution of such a code depen…
