We report on low-temperature magnetotransport measurements on InN nanowires, grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The characteristic fluctuation pattern observed in the conductance was employed to obtain information on phase-coherent transport. By analyzing the root-mean-square and the correlation field of the conductance fluctuations at various temperatures the phase-coherence length was determined.
Relaxation and dephasing of hole spins are measured in a gate-defined Ge/Si nanowire double quantum dot using a fast pulsed-gate method and dispersive readout. An inhomogeneous dephasing time $T_2^* \sim 0.18~\mathrm{μs}$ exceeds corresponding measurements in III-V semiconductors by more than an order of magnitude, as expected for predominately nuclear-spin-free materials. Dephasing is observed to be exponential in time, indicating the presence of a broadband noise source, rather than Gaussian, previously seen in systems with nuclear-spin-dominated dephasing.
We present a complete numerical calculation and an experimental data analysis of the universal conductance fluctuations in quasi-one-dimension nanowires. The conductance peak density model, introduced in nanodevice research on [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 176807 (2011)], is applied successfully to obtain the coherence length of InAs nanowire magnetoconductance and we prove its equivalence with correlation methods. We show the efficiency of the method and therefore a prominent alternative to obtain the phase-coherence length. The peak density model can be similarly applied to spintronic setups, graph…
In this paper we employ a combined {\it ab initio} and tight-binding approach to obtain the electronic and optical properties of hydrogenated InN nanowires. We first discuss InN band structure for the wurtzite structure calculated at the LDA+U level and use this information to extract the parameters needed for an empirical tight-binging implementation. These parameters are then employed to calculate the electronic and optical properties of InN nanowires in a diameter range that would not be affordable by {\it ab initio} techniques. The reliability of the large nanowires results is assessed by …
One of the key challenges in developing quantum networks is to generate single photons with high brightness, purity, and long temporal coherence. Semiconductor quantum dots potentially satisfy these requirements; however, due to imperfections in the surrounding material, the coherence generally degrades with increasing excitation power yielding a broader emission spectrum. Here we overcome this power broadening regime and demonstrate the longest coherence at exciton saturation where the detection count rates are highest. We detect single-photon count rates of 460,000 counts per second under pu…
We experimentally studied the Josephson supercurrent in Nb/InN-nanowire/Nb junctions. Large critical currents up to 5.7 $μ$A have been achieved, which proves the good coupling of the nanowire to the superconductor. The effect of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the Josephson junction on the critical current has been studied. The observed monotonous decrease of the critical current with magnetic field is explained by the magnetic pair-breaking effect in planar Josephson junctions of ultra-narrow width [J. C. Cuevas and F. S. Bergeret, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 217002 (2007)]
We investigated the magnetotransport of InAs nanowires grown by selective area metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. In the temperature range between 0.5 and 30 K reproducible fluctuations in the conductance upon variation of the magnetic field or the back-gate voltage are observed, which are attributed to electron interference effects in small disordered conductors. From the correlation field of the magnetoconductance fluctuations the phase-coherence length l_phi is determined. At the lowest temperatures l_phi is found to be at least 300 nm, while for temperatures exceeding 2 K a monotonous decr…
We present an experimental study of nanowire transmons at zero and applied in-plane magnetic field. With Josephson non-linearities provided by the nanowires, our qubits operate at higher magnetic fields than standard transmons. Nanowire transmons exhibit coherence up to 70 mT, where the induced superconducting gap in the nanowire closes. We demonstrate that on-chip charge noise coupling to the Josephson energy plays a dominant role in the qubit dephasing. This takes the form of strongly-coupled two-level systems switching on 100 ms timescales and a more weakly coupled background producing $1/f…
Quantum coherent transport of Dirac fermions in a mesoscopic nanowire of the 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3 is studied in the weak-disorder limit. At very low temperatures, many harmonics are evidenced in the Fourier transform of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, revealing the long phase-coherence length of surface states. Remarkably, from their exponential temperature dependence, we infer an unusual 1/T power law for the phase coherence length. This decoherence is typical for quasi-ballistic fermions weakly coupled to the dynamics of their environment.
Due to the strong spin-orbit interaction in indium antimonide, orbital motion and spin are no longer separated. This enables fast manipulation of qubit states by means of microwave electric fields. We report Rabi oscillation frequencies exceeding 100 MHz for spin-orbit qubits in InSb nanowires. Individual qubits can be selectively addressed due to intrinsic dierences in their g-factors. Based on Ramsey fringe measurements, we extract a coherence time T_2* = 8 +/- 1 ns at a driving frequency of 18.65 GHz. Applying a Hahn echo sequence extends this coherence time to 35 ns.
Quantum behavior of superconducting nanowires may essentially depend on the employed experimental setup. Here we investigate a setup that enables passing equilibrium supercurrent across an arbitrary segment of the wire without restricting fluctuations of its superconducting phase. The low temperature physics of the system is determined by a combined effect of collective sound-like plasma excitations and quantum phase slips. At $T=0$ the wire exhibits two quantum phase transitions, both being controlled by the dimensionless wire impedance $g$. While thicker wires with $g>16$ stay superconductin…
Despite the fact that GeTe is known to be a very interesting material for applications in thermoelectrics and for phase-change memories, the knowledge on its low-temperature transport properties is only limited. Here, we report on phase-coherent phenomena in the magnetotransport of GeTe nanowires. From universal conductance fluctuations, a phase-coherence length of about 200nm at 0.5K is determined for the hole carriers. The distinct phase-coherence is confirmed by the observation of Aharonov--Bohm type oscillations for magnetic fields applied along the nanowire axis. We interpret the occurren…
The coherence of polaritons plays a fundamental role in numerous recent experimental observations, from strong coupling to Bose-Einstein condensation, but accessing the coherence of polaritons is a difficult task due to the high energy of plasmons and excitons. However, surface phonon polaritons offer similar promises at much lower energy. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to use visible ultrafast lasers to generate and time resolve coherent surface phonon polaritons in nanowires. We show that these modes are generated through the ultrafast screening of the surface depletion field. By compa…
We study a series of dynamical protocols which involve periodically driving a quantum dot coupled to a putative nanowire hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) to i) reduce the hybridization between MZMs, ii) improve the coherence of the Majorana qubit with respect to $1/f$ dephasing noise and quasiparticle poisoning, and iii) provide a definitive test to differentiate Andreev Bound states (ABSs) from MZMs. The protocols are based on the notion of $draiding$ - exchanging a pair of Majoranas twice, repeatedly, at high frequency [1]. In this process, the exchanged Majorana operators acquire a robust…
We investigate the quantum transport properties of surface electrons on a topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowire in a magnetotransport study. Although the nanowires are synthesized by using a relatively coarse method of electrochemical deposition, clear Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of phases 0 and pi are observed, owing to the highly coherent surface electron channel. The oscillation amplitude exhibits exponential temperature dependence, suggesting that the phase coherence length L_phi is inversely proportional to the temperature, as in quasi-ballistic systems. In addition, a weak antilocalizatio…
The short coherence lengths characteristic of low-dimensional superconductors are associated with usefully high critical fields or temperatures. Unfortunately, such materials are often sensitive to disorder and suffer from phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter which diverge with temperature $T$, magnetic field $H$ or current $I$. We propose an approach to overcome synthesis and fluctuation problems: building superconductors from inhomogeneous composites of nanofilaments. Macroscopic crystals of quasi-one-dimensional Na$_{2-δ}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ featuring Na vacancy disorder ($δ\a…
We investigate the low-temperature magneto-transport properties of individual Ge/Si core/shell nanowires. Negative magneto-conductance was observed, which is a signature of one-dimensional weak antilocalization of holes in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. The temperature and back gate dependences of phase coherence length, spin-orbit relaxation time, and background conductance were studied. Specifically, we show the spin-orbit coupling strength can be modulated by more than five folds with an external electric field. These results suggest the Ge/Si nanowire system possesses strong a…
We report phase coherent electron transport in PbTe nanowire networks with a loop geometry. Magneto-conductance shows Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations with periods of $h/e$ and $h/2e$ in flux. The amplitude of $h/2e$ oscillations is enhanced near zero magnetic field, possibly due to interference between time-reversal paths. Temperature dependence of the AB amplitudes suggests a phase coherence length $\sim$ 8 - 12 $μ$m at 50 mK. This length scale is larger than the typical geometry of PbTe-based hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire devices.
The superconducting proximity effect is probed experimentally in Josephson junctions fabricated with InAs nanowires contacted by Nb leads. Contact transparencies $t \sim 0.7$ are observed. The electronic phase coherence length at low temperatures exceeds the channel length. However, the elastic scattering length is a few times shorter than the channel length. Electrical measurements reveal two regimes of quantum transport: (i) the Josephson regime, characterized by a dissipationless current up to $\sim 100$ nA, and (ii) the quantum dot regime, characterized by the formation of Andreev Bound St…
We report on low temperature (2-30K) electron transport and magneto-transport measurements of a chemically synthesized InAs nanowire. Both the temperature, T, and transverse magnetic field dependences of the nanowire conductance are consistent with the functional forms predicted in one-dimensional (1D) weak localization theory. By fitting the magneto-conductance data to theory, the phase coherence length of electrons is determined to be tens of nanometers with a T-1/3 dependence. Moreover, as the electron density is increased by a gate voltage, the magneto-conductance shows a possible signatur…
We report the occurrence of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in an InAs nanowire coupled to PbIn superconductors with varying temperature, bias voltage, and magnetic field. The ZBCP is suppressed with increasing temperature and bias voltage above the Thouless energy of the nanowire. Applying a magnetic field also diminishes the ZBCP when the resultant magnetic flux reaches the magnetic flux quantum h/2e. Our observations are consistent with theoretical expectations of reflectionless tunneling, in which the phase coherence between an electron and its Andreev-reflected hole induces the ZBCP…
Low-temperature magnetotransport measurements are performed on GaAs/InSb core-shell nanowires. The nanowires were self-catalyzed grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The conductance measurements as a function of back-gate voltage show an ambipolar behavior comprising an insulating range in between the transition from the p-type to the n-type region. Simulations based on a self-consistent Schrödinger--Poisson solver revealed that the ambipolar characteristics originate from a Fermi level dependent occupation of hole and electron states within the approximately circular quantum well formed in the In…
A systematic study has been carried out on the previously reported "magnetic-field-induced superconductivity" of Zn nanowires. By varying parameters such as magnetic field orientation and wire length, the results provide evidence that the phenomenon is a nonequilibrium effect associated with the boundary electrodes. They also suggest there are two length scales involved, the superconducting coherence length and quasiparticle relaxation length. As wire lengths approach either of these length scales, the effect weakens. We demonstrate that it is appropriate to consider the effect to be a stabili…
We investigate transmon qubits made from semiconductor nanowires with a fully surrounding superconducting shell. In the regime of reentrant superconductivity associated with the destructive Little-Parks effect, numerous coherent transitions are observed in the first reentrant lobe, where the shell carries 2π winding of superconducting phase, and are absent in the zeroth lobe. As junction density was increased by gate voltage, qubit coherence was suppressed then lost in the first lobe. These observations and numerical simulations highlight the role of winding-induced Andreev states in the junct…
We show that the topological Majorana modes in nanowires much longer than the superconducting coherence length are adiabatically connected with discrete zero-energy states generically occurring in short nanowires. We demonstrate that these zero-energy crossings can be tuned by an external magnetic field and are protected by the particle-hole symmetry. We study the evolution of the low-energy spectrum and the splitting oscillations as a function of magnetic field, wire length, and chemical potential, manifestly establishing that the low-energy physics of short wires is related to that occurring…
Nanowires with helical surface states represent key prerequisites for observing and exploiting phase-coherent topological conductance phenomena, such as spin-momentum locked quantum transport or topological superconductivity. We demonstrate in a joint experimental and theoretical study that gated nanowires fabricated from high-mobility strained HgTe, known as a bulk topological insulator, indeed preserve the topological nature of the surface states, that moreover extend phase-coherently across the entire wire geometry. The phase-coherence lengths are enhanced up to 5 $μ$m when tuning the wires…
We investigate the low temperature transport in 8 nm diameter Si junctionless nanowire field effect transistors fabricated by top down techniques with a wrap-around gate and two different activated doping densities. First we extract the intrinsic gate capacitance of the device geometry from a device that shows Coulomb blockade at 13 mK with over 500 Coulomb peaks across a gate voltage range of 6 V indicating the formation of a single island in the entire nanowire channel. In two other devices, doped Si:P $4\times10^{19}\,\text{cm}^{-3}$ and $2\times10^{20}\,\text{cm}^{-3}$, we observe quantum …
We probe the magnetotransport properties of individual InAs nanowires in a field effect transistor geometry. In the low magnetic field regime we observe magnetoresistance that is well described by the weak localization (WL) description in diffusive conductors. The weak localization correction is modified to weak anti-localization (WAL) as the gate voltage is increased. We show that the gate voltage can be used to tune the phase coherence length ($l_ϕ$) and spin-orbit length ($l_{so}$) by a factor of $\sim$ 2. In the high field and low temperature regime we observe the mobility of devices can b…
We study the magnetic and superconducting proximity effects in a semiconducting nanowire (NW) attached to superconducting leads and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). We show that a sizable equilibrium spin polarization arises in the NW due to the interplay between the superconducting correlations and the exchange field in the FI. The resulting magnetization has a nonlocal contribution that spreads in the NW over the superconducting coherence length and is opposite in sign to the local spin polarization induced by the magnetic proximity effect in the normal state. For a Josephson-junction setup, …
We study theoretically how electron-phonon interaction affects the energies and level broadening (inverse lifetime) of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in a clean topological nanowire at low temperatures. At zero temperature, the energy splitting between the right and left MBSs remains exponentially small with increasing nanowire length $L$. At finite temperatures, however, the absorption of thermal phonons leads to the broadening of energy levels of the MBSs that does not decay with system length, and the coherent absorption/emission of phonons at opposite ends of the nanowire results in MBSs ene…
A spatial potential trap is formed in a 6.0 μm Al(Ga)N nanowire by varying the Al composition along its length during epitaxial growth. The polariton emission characteristics of a dielectric microcavity with the single nanowire embedded in-plane has been studied at room temperature. Excitation is provided at the Al(Ga)N end of the nanowire and polariton emission is observed from the lowest bandgap GaN region of the nanowire. Comparison of the results with those measured in an identical microcavity with an uniform GaN nanowire and having an identical exciton-photon detuning suggests evaporative…
We report superconductivity in quasi-1D nanostructures created at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. Nanostructures having line widths w~10 nm are formed from the parent two-dimensional electron liquid using conductive atomic force microscope lithography. Nanowire cross-sections are small compared to the superconducting coherence length in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (w<<xi~100 nm), placing them in the quasi-1D regime. Broad superconducting transitions with temperature and finite resistances in the superconducting state well below Tc~200 mK are observed. V-I curves show switching between the superconducting and n…
Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems are promising candidates for the realization Majorana fermions and topological order, i.e. topologically protected degeneracies, in solid state devices. We show that the topological order is mirrored in the excitation spectra and can be observed in nonlinear Coulomb blockade transport through a ring-shaped nanowire. Especially, the excitation spectrum is almost independent of magnetic flux in the topologically trivial phase but acquires a characteristic $h/e$ magnetic flux periodicity in the nontrivial phase. The transition between the trivial and no…
Recent advances in the synthesis of inorganic and organic nanowires and nanotubes have provided both components for various functional devices and platforms for the study of low- dimensional transport phenomena. However, tremendous challenges have remained not only for the integration of these building blocks into functional devices, but also in the characterization of the fundamental transport properties in these nanoscale model systems. In particular, thermal and thermoelectric transport measurements can be considerably more complicated than electron transport measurements, especially for in…

A semiconducting nanowire with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling and coupled to a superconductor can be tuned by an external Zeeman field into a topological phase with Majorana zero modes. Here we theoretically investigate how this exotic topological superconductor phase manifests in Josephson junctions based on such proximitized nanowires. In particular, we focus on critical currents in the short junction limit ($L_{\rm N}\ll ξ$, where $L_{\rm N}$ is the junction length and $ξ$ is the superconducting coherence length) and show that they contain important information about nontrivial topology …
Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are arguably becoming the leading platform for the search of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in engineered topological superconductors. We perform a systematic numerical study of the low-energy Andreev spectrum and supercurrents in short and long superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions made of nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, where an external Zeeman field is applied perpendicular to the spin-orbit axis. In particular, we investigate the detailed evolution of the Andreev bound states from the tri…

We report the capability to simulate in a quantum mechanical tight-binding (TB) atomistic fashion NW devices featuring several hundred to millions of atoms and diameter up to 18 nm. Such simulations go far beyond what is typically affordable with today's supercomputers using a traditional real space (RS) TB Hamiltonian technique. We have employed an innovative TB mode space (MS) technique instead and demonstrate large speedup (up to 10,000x) while keeping good accuracy (error smaller than 1 percent) compared to the RS NEGF method. Such technique and capability open new avenues to explore and u…

The Cooper-pair size (i.e., the BCS coherence length) in low-dimensional superconductors is dramatically modified by quantum-size effects. In particular, for nanowires made of conventional superconducting materials, we show that the coherence length exhibits size-dependent drops by two-three orders of magnitude and reaches values found in high-$T_c$ superconductors. This phenomenon is surprisingly similar to the well-known BCS-BEC crossover but with one important exception: it is driven by the transverse quantization of the electron spectrum rather than by the strength of the fermion-fermion i…
We theoretically find that the resistance of a superconducting microbridge/nanowire {\it decreases} while the retrapping current $I_r$ for the transition to the superconducting state {\it increases} when one suppresses the magnitude of the order parameter $|Δ|$ in the attached superconducting leads. This effect is a consequence of the increased energy interval for diffusion of the 'hot' nonequilibrium quasiparticles (induced by the oscillations of $|Δ|$ in the center of the microbridge) to the leads. The effect is absent in short microbridges (with length less than the coherence length) and it…
We theoretically study topological planar Josephson junctions (JJs) formed from spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) proximitized by two superconductors and subjected to an in-plane magnetic field $B_\parallel$. Compared to previous studies of topological superconductivity in these junctions, here we consider the case where the superconducting leads are narrower than the superconducting coherence length. In this limit the system may be viewed as a proximitized multiband wire, with an additional knob being the phase difference $ϕ$ between the superconducting leads. A combin…
