The paper presents the description of the structure of the nearest field of the internal gravity waves at the critical modes of their excitation. Studied are the exact solutions both for the elevation component and the vertical component of the speed describing the structure of the wave field in the direct vicinity of the source. At that the single mode of the elevation is expressed through the full elliptic integral of the first order, and the single mode of the vertical speed - through McDonald function and the logarithmic functions. As the result of the study it was possible to obtain expressions for the full field representing the sum of the wave modes and expressed through the derivatives of the gamma function. The obtained asymptotic and exact representations of the solution allow to describe the critical modes of generation of the internal gravity waves near to the sources of excitations - for the wide ranges of the sources movement velocity .
The aim of this work is to investigate the interaction of gravity-capillary waves resonantly excited by two moving disturbances along the free surface. The problem is formulated using the full Euler equations and numerical computations are performed in a simplified domain through the use of a conformal mapping which flattens the free surface. We focus on nearly-critical flows with intermediate capillary effects and characterise their main features. In the supercritical regime the wave interaction can be strongly nonlinear leading to the onset of wave breaking. In the subcritical regime depress…
The dynamics of perturbations to large-amplitude Internal Solitary Waves (ISW) in two-layered flows with thin interfaces is analyzed by means of linear optimal transient growth methods. Optimal perturbations are computed through direct-adjoint iterations of the Navier-Stokes equations linearized around inviscid, steady ISWs obtained from the Dubreil-Jacotin-Long (DJL) equation. Optimal perturbations are found as a function of the ISW phase velocity $c$ (alternatively amplitude) for one representative stratification. These disturbances are found to be localized wave-like packets that originate …
Mesoscale wave processes are a transport mechanism for the energy exchange between the troposphere and stratosphere, since the tropopause blocks such an exchange. It is believed that internal gravity waves (IGW) are the main wave process in the atmosphere. However, the explanation of the process of IGW occurrence cannot be considered sufficiently substantiated, because the reasons for the appearance of the selected air parcel, which is affected by the initial disturbance, are not yet clear. The data of the performed experiments on the detection of wave processes shows the presence of noticeabl…
We determine experimentally the angle $α$ of maximum wave amplitude in the far-field wake behind a vertical surface-piercing cylinder translated at constant velocity $U$ for Bond numbers $\mathrm{Bo}_D = D / λ_c$ ranging between 0.1 and 4.2, where $D$ is the cylinder diameter and $λ_c$ the capillary length. In all cases the wake angle is found to follow a Mach-like law at large velocity, $α\sim U^{-1}$, but with different prefactors depending on the value of $\mathrm{Bo}_D$. For small $\mathrm{Bo}_D$ (large capillary effects), the wake angle approximately follows the law $α\simeq c_{\rm g,min}…
Convection over a wavy heated bottom wall in the air flow has been studied in experiments with the Rayleigh number $\sim 10^8$. It is shown that the mean temperature gradient in the flow core inside a large-scale circulation is directed upward, that corresponds to the stably stratified flow. In the experiments with a wavy heated bottom wall, we detect large-scale standing internal gravity waves excited in the regions with the stably stratified flow. The wavelength and the period of these waves are much larger than the turbulent spatial and time scales, respectively. In particular, the frequenc…
Here we show that there exist internal gravity waves that are inherently unstable, that is, they cannot exist in nature for a long time. The instability mechanism is a one-way (irreversible) harmonic-generation resonance that permanently transfers the energy of an internal wave to its higher harmonics. We show that, in fact, there are countably infinite number of such unstable waves. For the harmonic-generation resonance to take place, nonlinear terms in the free surface boundary condition play a pivotal role, and the instability does not obtain for a linearly-stratified fluid if a simplified …
Hydrodynamic waves propagate through stellar interiors, transporting energy and angular momentum. They can also advect fluid elements to produce mixing, but this effect has not been quantified from first principles. We derive the leading order non-linear wave mixing due to internal gravity waves in a thermally and compositionally-stratified fluid. We find that this scales as the fourth power of wave velocity, that it is suppressed by compositional stratification, and that it depends on the thermal and compositional diffusivities.
Internal gravity waves play a primary role in geophysical fluids: they contribute significantly to mixing in the ocean and they redistribute energy and momentum in the middle atmosphere. Until recently, most studies were focused on plane wave solutions. However, these solutions are not a satisfactory description of most geophysical manifestations of internal gravity waves, and it is now recognized that internal wave beams with a confined profile are ubiquitous in the geophysical context. We will discuss the reason for the ubiquity of wave beams in stratified fluids, related to the fact that th…
Lower atmospheric global dust storms affect the small- and large-scale weather and variability of the whole Martian atmosphere. Analysis of the CO$_2$ density data from the Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer instrument (NGIMS) on board NASA's Mars Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft show a remarkable increase of GW-induced density fluctuations in the thermosphere during the 2018 major dust storm with distinct latitude and local time variability. The mean thermospheric GW activity increases by a factor of two during the storm event. The magnitude of relative density perturbation…
Considered in this paper is a bi-directional model for the propagation of interfacial capillary-gravity waves in a two-layer system of fluids with rigid lid condition for the upper layer and lower layer with a much larger or infinite depth. The system is derived from a reformulation of the Euler equations for internal waves with nonnegligible surface tension effects in the interface and the corresponding asymptotic model under the Benjamin-Ono regime. Another unidirectional model, so-called regularized Benjamin equation, generalizing the Benjamin equation, is also introduced. Well-posedness of…
Coupled mixed convective and stratified systems are common in natural flows. To study experimentally the associated dynamics, we use a singular property of water: its non-linear equation of state is characterised by a maximum density close to $4^{\circ}$C. By heating the top of a tank at $35^{\circ}$C and cooling the bottom at $0^{\circ}$C, a two-layer configuration spontaneously appears. The convective motion in the bottom layer consists mostly of a large-scale circulation and rising cold plumes. This turbulent flow generates propagating internal gravity waves in the upper stably-stratified l…
With the aim of assessing internal wave-driven mixing in the ocean, we develop a new technique for direct numerical simulations of stratified turbulence. Since the spatial scale of oceanic internal gravity waves is typically much larger than that of turbulence, fully incorporating both in a model would require a high computational cost, and is therefore out of our scope. Alternatively, we cut out a small domain periodically distorted by an unresolved large-scale internal wave and locally simulate the energy cascade to the smallest scales. In this model, even though the Froude number of the out…
The possibility of hydrodynamic diffusion in a model of grease ice stirred by the velocity field of a gravity wave is explored. It is argued that mechanical interactions among ice crystals can induce disturbances in the fluid velocity - in the form of interstitial flows - analogous to those leading to diffusion in fixed beds. A two-fluid description of the system is introduced, in which the ice matrix is treated as a deformable porous medium. Depending on the range of parameters, the effective diffusivity of the medium can exceed the value which would be obtained by only keeping into account p…
We investigate experimentally stratified turbulence forced by waves. Stratified turbulence is present in oceans and it is expected to be dominated by nonlinear interaction of internal gravity waves as described by the Garrett & Munk spectrum. In order to reach turbulent regimes dominated by stratification we use the Coriolis facility in Grenoble (France) which large size enables us to reach regimes with both low Froude number and large Reynolds number. Stratification is obtained by using vertically linearly varying salt concentration and we force large scale waves in a $6\times6\times 1$ m$^3$…
This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the long-standing fluid mechanics problem involving the temporal resolution of a large, localised initial disturbance into a sequence of solitary waves. This problem is of fundamental importance in a range of applications including tsunami and internal ocean wave modelling. This study is performed in the context of the viscous fluid conduit system-the driven, cylindrical, free interface between two miscible Stokes fluids with high viscosity contrast. Due to buoyancy induced nonlinear self-steepening balanced by stress induced interfac…
Asteroseismology probes the interiors of stars by studying oscillation modes at a star's surface. Although pulsation spectra are well understood for solar-like oscillators, a substantial fraction of red giant stars observed by Kepler exhibit abnormally low-amplitude dipole oscillation modes. Fuller et al. (2015) suggests this effect is produced by strong core magnetic fields that scatter dipole internal gravity waves (IGWs) into higher multipole IGWs or magnetic waves. In this paper, we study the interaction of IGWs with a magnetic field to test this mechanism. We consider two background stell…
In binaries composed of either early-type stars or white dwarfs, the dominant tidal process involves the excitation of internal gravity waves (IGWs), which propagate towards the stellar surface, and their dissipation via nonlinear wave breaking. We perform 2D hydrodynamical simulations of this wave breaking process in a stratified, isothermal atmosphere. We find that, after an initial transient phase, the dissipation of the IGWs naturally generates a sharp critical layer, separating the lower stationary region (with no mean flow) and the upper "synchronized" region (with the mean flow velocity…
A horizontal flow of two immiscible fluid layers with different densities, viscosities and thicknesses, subject to vertical gravitational forces and with an insoluble surfactant present at the interface, is investigated. The base Couette flow is driven by the horizontal motion of the channel walls. Linear and nonlinear stages of the (inertialess) surfactant and gravity dependent long-wave instability are studied using the lubrication approximation, which leads to a system of coupled nonlinear evolution equations for the interface and surfactant disturbances. The linear stability is determined …
