Wave disturbances of a stratified gas are studied. The description is built on a basis of the Bhatnagar -- Gross -- Krook (BGK) kinetic equation which is reduced down the level of fluid mechanics. The double momenta set is introduced inside a scheme of iterations of the equations operators, dividing the velocity space along and opposite gravity field direction. At both half-spaces the local equilibrium is supposed. As the result, the momenta system is derived. It reproduce Navier-Stokes and Barnett equations at the first and second order in high collision frequencies. The homogeneous background limit gives the known results obtained by direct kinetics applications by Loyalka and Cheng as the recent higher momentum fluid mechanics results of Chen, Rao and Spiegel. The ground state declines from exponential at the Knudsen regime. The WKB solutions for ultrasound in exponentially stratified medium are constructed in explicit form, evaluated and plotted.
The linear stability of stratified two-phase flows in rectangular ducts is studied numerically. The linear stability analysis takes into account all possible infinitesimal three-dimensional disturbances and is carried out by solution of the associated eigenproblem. The neutral stability boundary and the corresponding critical wave number are obtained for liquid - liquid and air - water systems. Depending on the problem parameters, the instability sets in owing to short, intermediate, of long wave most unstable perturbations. Patterns of the most unstable disturbances are reported and discussed…
The evolution of a localized vortex in stably stratified flow, within the Boussinesq approximation, is analyzed using the fluid impulse concept. The set of equations describing the temporal development of the fluid impulse has an integro-differential character where the terms representing the effect of stratification appear as convolution integral of the component of the fluid impulse and time-depended 'memory' functions. These functions are calculated for the case where the external parallel shear flow varies only in the direction gravitational force and is subjected to localized two- and thr…
Effect of interfacial disturbances on instabilities of buoyant/thermocapillary convective flows in rectangular cavities is studied in a series of numerical experiments. The computations are carried out for several two-liquid two-layer systems taking into account properties of liquids used in previously published experiments. Relation between the interface deformations and the Boussinesq approximation is discussed. It is shown that in some systems, including the interface disturbances in the model can alter the critical temperature difference by approximately 10%, producing either destabilizing…
The effects of wall velocity slip on the linear stability of a gravity-driven miscible two-fluid flow down an incline are examined. The fluids have the matched density but different viscosity. A smooth viscosity stratification is achieved due to the presence of a thin mixed layer between the fluids. The results show that the presence of slip exhibits a promise for stabilizing the miscible flow system by raising the critical Reynolds number at the onset and decreasing the bandwidth of unstable wave numbers beyond the threshold of the dominant instability. This is different from its role in the …
In this paper, the instability of layered two-phase flows caused by the presence of a soluble surfactant (or a surface active solute) is studied. The fluids have different viscosities, but are density matched to focus on Marangoni effects. The fluids flow between two flat plates, which are maintained at different solute concentrations. This establishes a constant flux of solute from one fluid to the other in the base state. A linear stability analysis is performed, using a combination of asymptotic and numerical methods. In the creeping flow regime, Marangoni stresses destabilize the flow, pro…
The driven, cylindrical, free interface between two miscible, Stokes fluids with high viscosity contrast have been shown to exhibit dispersive hydrodynamics. A hallmark feature of dispersive hydrodynamic media is the dispersive resolution of wavebreaking that results in a dispersive shock wave. In the context of the viscous fluid conduit system, the present work introduces a simple, practical method to precisely control the location, time, and spatial profile of wavebreaking in dispersive hydrodynamic systems with only boundary control. The method is based on tracking the dispersionless charac…
