Discussed is kinematics and dynamics of bodies with affine degrees of freedom, i.e., homogeneously deformable "gyroscopes". The special stress is laid on the status and physical justification of affine dynamical invariance. On the basis of classical Hamiltonian formalism the Schroedinger quantization procedure is performed. Some methods of the partial separation of variables, analytical treatment and search of rigorous solutions are developed. The possiblity of applications in theory of structured media, nanophysics, and molecular physics is discussed.
In the present paper we investigate the mechanics of systems of affinely-rigid bodies, i.e., bodies rigid in the sense of affine geometry. Certain physical applications are possible in modelling of molecular crystals, granular media, and other physical objects. Particularly interesting are dynamical models invariant under the group underlying geometry of degrees of freedom. In contrary to the single body case there exist nontrivial potentials invariant under this group (left and right acting). The concept of relative (mutual) deformation tensors of pairs of affine bodies is discussed. Scalar i…
The affine coherent states quantization is a promising integral quantization of Hamiltonian systems when the phase space includes at least one conjugate pair of variables which takes values from a half-plane. Such a situation is common for gravitational systems which include singularities. The construction of the quantization map includes a one-to-one mapping of the half-plane onto the affine group. Particular cases of this mapping define specific parametrizations of the group. Our aim is showing that different such parametrizations lead to unitarily inequivalent quantum theories. Depending on…
In this paper we develope the main ideas of the quantized version of affinely-rigid (homogeneously deformable) motion. We base our consideration on the usual Schrödinger formulation of quantum mechanics in the configuration manifold which is given, in our case, by the affine group or equivalently by the semi-direct product of the linear group ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ and the space of translations $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where $n$ equals the dimension of the "physical space". In particular, we discuss the problem of dynamical invariance of the kinetic energy under the action of the whole affine group…
Covariant affine integral quantization of the half-plane is studied and applied to the motion of a particle on the half-line. We examine the consequences of different quantizer operators built from weight functions on the half-plane. To illustrate the procedure, we examine two particular choices of the weight function, yielding thermal density operators and affine inversion respectively. The former gives rise to a temperature-dependent probability distribution on the half-plane whereas the later yields the usual canonical quantization and a quasi-probability distribution (affine Wigner functio…
The similarity between classical and quantum physics is large enough to make an investigation of quantization methods a worthwhile endeavour. As history has shown, Dirac's canonical quantization method works reasonably well in the case of conventional quantum mechanics over $\mathbb{R}^n$ but it may fail in non-trivial phase spaces and also suffer from ordering problems. Affine quantization is an alternative method, similar to the canonical quantization, that may offer a positive result in situations for which canonical quantization fails. In this paper we revisit the affine quantization metho…
Affine quantization is a parallel procedure to canonical quantization, which is ideally suited to deal with non-renormalizable scalar models as well as quantum gravity. The basic applications of this approach lead to the common goals of any quantization, such as Schroedinger's representation and Schroedinger's equation. Careful attention is paid toward seeking favored classical variables, which are those that should be promoted to the principal quantum operators. This effort leads toward classical variables that have a constant positive, zero, or negative curvature, which typically characteriz…
Covariant affine integral quantization is studied and applied to the motion of a particle in a punctured plane R^2_\ast=R^2\{0}, for which the phase space is R^2_\ast=R^2\{0}X R^2. We examine the consequences of different quantizer operators built from weight functions on this phase space. To illustrate the procedure, we examine two examples of weights. The first one corresponds to 2-D coherent state families, while the second one corresponds to the affine inversion in the punctured plane. The later yields the usual canonical quantization and a quasi-probability distribution (2-D affine Wigner…
We develop a quantum harmonic analysis framework for the affine group. This encapsulates several examples in the literature such as affine localization operators, covariant integral quantizations, and affine quadratic time-frequency representations. In the process, we develop a notion of admissibility for operators and extend well known results to the operator setting. A major theme of the paper is the interaction between operator convolutions, affine Weyl quantization, and admissibility.
For a non Archimedean local field which is not of characteristic $2$, nor an extension of $\mathbb Q_2$, we construct a pseudo-differential calculus covariant under a unimodular subgroup of the affine group of the field. Our phase space is a quotient group of the covariance group. Our main result is a generalisation on that context of the Calderón-Vaillancourt estimate. Our construction can be thought as the non Archimedean version of Unterberger's Fuchs calculus and our methods are mainly based on Wigner functions and on coherent states transform.
Gravity does not naturally fit well with canonical quantization. Affine quantization is an alternative procedure that is similar to canonical quantization but may offer a positive result when canonical quantization fails to offer a positive result. Two simple examples given initially illustrate the power of affine quantization. These examples clearly point toward an affine quantization procedure that vastly simplifies a successful quantization of general relativity.
An ultralocal form of any classical field theory eliminates all spatial derivatives in its action functional, e.g., in its Hamiltonian functional density. It has been applied to covariant scalar field theories and even to Einstein's general relativity, by Pilati, as an initial term in a perturbation series that aimed to restore all omitted derivatives. Previously, the author has quantized ultralocal scalar fields by affine quantization to show that these non-renormalizanle theories can be correctly quantized by affine quantization; the story of such scalar models is discussed in this paper. Th…
