I re-derive the lowest order effective Lagrangian for electro-weak symmetry breaking without the use of Goldstone's theorem for spontaneously broken global symmetries and without the assumption of a custodial symmetry. I consider the breaking of a local symmetry with gauge group G down to an Abelian sub-group K and construct a gauge-invariant functional with one free parameter v, such that v=0 corresponds to a gauge theory with gauge group G, while v --> infinity corresponds to a gauge theory with gauge group K.
We discuss the possibility of obtaining a non-abelian discrete flavor symmetry from an underlying continuous, possibly gauged, flavor symmetry SU(2) or SU(3) through spontaneous symmetry breaking. We consider all possible cases, where the continuous symmetry is broken by small representations. "Small" representations are these which couple at leading order to the Standard Model fermions transforming as two- or three-dimensional representations of the flavor group. We find that, given this limited representation content, the only non-abelian discrete group which can arise as a residual symmetry…
We investigate flavored gauge mediation models in which the Higgs and messenger doublets are embedded in multiplets of the discrete non-Abelian symmetry S3. In these theories, the S3 symmetry correlates the flavor structure of the quark and lepton Yukawa couplings with the structure of the messenger Yukawa couplings that contribute to the soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters. We provide a systematic exploration of possible scenarios within this framework that can accommodate hierarchical quark and charged lepton masses, and examine the resulting phenomenological implications in each cas…
Grand Unified Theories often involve additional Abelian group factors apart from the standard model hypercharge, that generally lead to loop-induced mixing gauge kinetic terms. In this letter, we show that at the one-loop level this effect can be avoided in many cases by a suitable choice of basis in group space and present a general scheme for the construction of this basis. In supersymmetric theories however, a residual mixing in the soft SUSY breaking gaugino mass terms may appear. We generalize the renormalization group equations for the gaugino mass terms to account for this effect. In a …
We discuss mechanisms for naturally generating GeV-scale hidden sectors in the context of weak-scale supersymmetry. Such low mass scales can arise when hidden sectors are more weakly coupled to supersymmetry breaking than the visible sector, as happens when supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector by gauge interactions under which the hidden sector is uncharged, or if the hidden sector is sequestered from gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We study these mechanisms in detail in the context of gauge and gaugino mediation, and present specific models of Abelian GeV-scal…
We study domain walls and vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory with N flavors in the chiral limit. If the axial anomaly is absent, there exist stable Abelian axial vortices winding around the spontaneously broken U(1)_A symmetry and non-Abelian axial vortices winding around both the U(1)_A and non-Abelian SU(N) chiral symmetries. In the presence of the axial anomaly term, metastable domain walls are present and Abelian axial vortices must be attached by N domain walls, forming domain wall junctions. We show that a domain wall junction decays into N non-Abelian vortices att…
Flavon exchange effects in models with abelian flavor symmetry
There are a large number of systems characterized by a completely broken gauge symmetry, but with an unbroken global color-flavor diagonal symmetry, i.e., systems in the so-called color-flavor locked phase. If the gauge symmetry breaking supports vortices, the latter develop non-Abelian orientational zero-modes and become non-Abelian vortices, a subject of intense study in the last several years. In this paper we consider the effects of weakly gauging the full exact global flavor symmetry in such systems, deriving an effective description of the light excitations in the presence of a vortex. S…
After imposing current conservation together with the Gauss law as initial conditions on the Abelian Nambu model, we prove that the resulting theory is equivalent to standard QED in the non-linear gauge $\left(A_{μ}A^{μ}-n^{2}M^{2}\right)=0$, to all orders in perturbation theory. We show this by writing both models in terms of the same variables, which produce identical Feynman rules for the interactions and propagators. A crucial point is to verify that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts arising from the gauge fixing procedure in the QED sector decouple to all orders. We verify this decoupling by follo…
We generalise our previous formulation of gauge-invariant PT-symmetric field theories to include models with non-Abelian symmetries and discuss the extension to such models of the Englert-Brout-Higgs-Kibble mechanism for generating masses for vector bosons. As in the Abelian case, the non-Abelian gauge fields are coupled to non-conserved currents. We present a consistent scheme for gauge fixing, demonstrating Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariance, and show that the particle spectrum and interactions are gauge invariant. We exhibit the masses that gauge bosons in the simplest two-doublet SU(2)xU…
In this paper we derive acoustic black hole metrics in the (3+1) and (2+1)-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with Lorentz symmetry breaking. In this set up the sound waves lose the Lorentz boost invariance and suffer a 'birefringence' effect. We have found acoustic black holes and respective Hawking temperatures depending on the Lorentz violating parameter. Furthermore, we obtain an acoustic Kerr-like black hole metric with the Lorentz violating term affecting its rate of loss of mass. We also have shown that for suitable values of the Lorentz violating parameter a wider spectrum of particle wav…
Gauge theory is the foundation of the particle physics Standard Model (SM). Considering the multiple gauge sectors for one gauge transformation, we study the generalized Abelian and non-Abelian (Yang-Mills theory) gauge theories. We first point out that the U(1) gauge theory has a few unique properties, which provide the motivations for the generalized Yang-Mills theory. Also, we consider the generalized Abelian gauge theory, and study the Higgs mechanism with new interesting properties. In addition, we propose the simple and generic generalizations of Yang-Mills theory. In the simple generali…
We consider the holographic abelian Higgs model and show that, in the absence of the scale symmetry breaking effect, chiral symmetry breaking gives linear confinement where the slope is given by the value of the chiral condensation. The model can be considered either as the theory of superconductivity or as the axial sector of QCD depending on the interpretation of the charge. We also provided a few models with linear confinement.
We discuss a consistent theory for a self-interacting vector field, breaking an Abelian symmetry in such a way to obtain an interesting behavior for its longitudinal polarization. In an appropriate decoupling limit, the dynamics of the longitudinal mode is controlled by Galileon interactions. The full theory away from the decoupling limit does not propagate ghost modes, and can be investigated in regimes where non-linearities become important. When coupled to gravity, this theory provides a candidate for dark energy, since it admits de Sitter cosmological solutions characterized by a technical…
We explore the model-building and phenomenology of flavored gauge mediation models of supersymmetry breaking in which the electroweak Higgs doublets and the SU(2) messenger doublets are connected by a discrete non-Abelian symmetry. The embedding of the Higgs and messenger fields into representations of this non-Abelian Higgs-messenger symmetry results in specific relations between the Standard Model Yukawa couplings and the messenger-matter Yukawa interactions. Taking the concrete example of an S(3) Higgs-messenger symmetry, we demonstrate that while the minimal implementation of this scenario…
We investigate the effect of a uniform background magnetic field on the chiral symmetry breaking in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We observe that the chiral condensate grows linearly with the field strength B up to \sqrt{e B} = 3 GeV as predicted by chiral perturbation theory for full QCD. As the temperature increases the coefficient in front of the linear term gets smaller. In the magnetic field near-zero eigenmodes of the Dirac operator tend to have more regular structure with larger (compared to zero-field case) Hausdorff dimensionality. We suggest that the delocalization of near-…
We present a supersymmetric SU(5) GUT model with a discrete non-Abelian flavor symmetry that is broken by Wilson lines. The model is formulated in 4+3 dimensions compactified on a manifold S^3/Z_n. Symmetry breaking by Wilson lines is topological and allows to realize the necessary flavor symmetry breaking without a vacuum alignment mechanism. The model predicts the hierarchical pattern of charged fermion masses and quark mixing angles. Small normal hierarchical neutrino masses are generated by the type-I seesaw mechanism. The non-Abelian flavor symmetry predicts to leading order exact maximal…
Vector boson dark matter (DM) appears in $SU(2)_N$ extension ($N$ stands for neutral) of Standard Model (SM) where an additional global $U(1)_P$ symmetry is assumed and results in a generalized lepton number defined as: $L=P+T_{3N}$. Breaking of $U(1)_P$ leads to the breaking of $L$ to $(-1)^L$, thus stabilizing DM through modified $R=(-1)^{3B+L+2J}$. This model, already discussed in literature, offers several novel features to elaborate upon. For example, $t$-channel annihilation and dominant $s$-channel direct search, along with co-annihilation, helps the DM to evade stringent direct search …
Following a previous proposal, lepton number is considered as the result of a spontaneously broken non-Abelian gauge $SU(2)_N$ symmetry. New fermions are added to support this new symmetry, the spontaneous breaking of which allows these new fermions to be part of the dark sector, together with the vector gauge boson which communicates between them and the usual leptons. A byproduct is a potential significant contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

We investigate some cosmological consequences of a vector-tensor theory where an Abelian symmetry in the vector sector is slightly broken by a mass term and by ghost-free derivative self-interactions. When studying cosmological expansion in the presence of large bare cosmological constant $Λ_{cc}$, we find that the theory admits branches of de Sitter solutions in which the scale of the Hubble parameter is inversely proportional to a power of $Λ_{cc}$. Hence, a large value of $Λ_{cc}$ leads to a small size for the Hubble scale. In an appropriate limit, in which the symmetry breaking parameters …
Far-from-equilibrium dynamics of SU(2) gauge theory with Wilson fermions is studied in 1+1 space-time dimensions using a real-time lattice approach. Lattice improved Hamiltonians are shown to be very efficient in simulating Schwinger pair creation and emergent phenomena such as plasma oscillations. As a consequence, significantly smaller lattices can be employed to approach continuum physics in the infinite-volume limit as compared to unimproved implementations. This allows us to compute also higher-order correlation functions including four fermion fields, which give unprecedented insights in…
Metastable Strings in Abelian Higgs Models Embedded in Non-Abelian Theories: Calculating the Decay Rate
我们研究了嵌入非阿贝尔规范理论的U(1)弦的命运,该规范理论具有对称性破缺的分级模式:G->U(1)at V->nothing at v,V>> v.
In anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) models, superpartner masses are proportional to couplings squared. Their hidden sectors therefore naturally contain WIMPless dark matter, particles whose thermal relic abundance is guaranteed to be of the correct size, even though they are not weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs). We study viable dark matter candidates in WIMPless AMSB models with non-Abelian hidden sectors and highlight unusual possibilities that emerge in even the simplest models. In one example with a pure SU(N) hidden sector, stable hidden gluinos freeze out with th…
We review pedagogically non-Abelian discrete groups, which play an important role in the particle physics. We show group-theoretical aspects for many concrete groups, such as representations, their tensor products. We explain how to derive, conjugacy classes, characters, representations, and tensor products for these groups (with a finite number). We discussed them explicitly for $S_N$, $A_N$, $T'$, $D_N$, $Q_N$, $Σ(2N^2)$, $Δ(3N^2)$, $T_7$, $Σ(3N^3)$ and $Δ(6N^2)$, which have been applied for model building in the particle physics. We also present typical flavor models by using $A_4$, $S_4$, …
I consider an Abelian gauge theory, with a complex scalar field and massless, chiral fermions, in the limit where the couplings and the interactions induce radiative symmetry breaking, and I derive and verify the Nielsen identities that ensure the gauge independence of the physical fermion mass that emerges in the broken phase of the effective action.
Exact discrete symmetries, if non-linearly realized, can reduce the ultraviolet sensitivity of a given theory. The scalars stemming from spontaneous symmetry breaking are massive without breaking the discrete symmetry, and those masses are protected from divergent quadratic corrections. This is in contrast to non-linearly realized continuous symmetries, for which the masses of pseudo-Goldstone bosons require an explicit breaking mechanism. The symmetry-protected masses and potentials of those discrete Goldstone bosons offer promising physics avenues, both theoretically and in view of the bloom…
We discuss domain walls from spontaneous breaking of Abelian discrete symmetries $Z_N$. A series of different domain wall structures are predicted, depending on the symmetry and charge assignments of scalars leading to the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). A widely-existing type of domain walls are those separating degenerate vacua which are adjacent in the field space. We denote these walls as adjacency walls. In the case that $Z_N$ terms are small compared with the $U(1)$ terms, the SSB of $U(1)$ generates strings first and then adjacency walls bounded by strings are generated after the S…
A renormalizable non-Abelian theory of strong interactions of pions, mediated by rho-mesons, is formulated at tree- and at one-loop level in perturbation theory. Hadron masses are generated through spontaneous symmetry breaking using the Higgs mechanism. Quantization and gauge fixing is achieved using the generalized class of $R_ξ$ gauges. As an application of this theory, pion-pion scattering lengths are obtained at tree-level in good agreement with data.
Non-Abelian discrete family symmetries play a pivotal role in the formulation of models with tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. We discuss how to obtain symmetries such as A4, semidirect product of Z7 and Z3, and Delta(27) from an underlying SU(3) gauge symmetry. Higher irreducible representations are required to achieve the spontaneous breaking of the continuous group. We present methods of identifying the required vacuum alignments and discuss in detail the symmetry breaking potentials.
