We investigate the spectral properties of a hole moving in a two-dimensional Hubbard model for strongly correlated t_2g electrons. Although superexchange interactions are Ising-like, a quasi-one-dimensional coherent hole motion arises due to effective three-site terms. This mechanism is fundamentally different from the hole motion via quantum fluctuations in the conventional spin model with SU(2) symmetry. The orbital model describes also propagation of a hole in some e_g compounds, and we argue that orbital degeneracy alone does not lead to hole self-localization.
Understanding complex correlated oxides and their phase transitions has long been a challenge. The difficulty largely arises from the intriguing interplay between multiple degrees of freedoms. While degeneracy can play an important role in determining material characteristics, there is no well-defined way to quantify and to unveil its role in real materials having complicated band structures. Here we suggest a way to quantify the `effective degeneracy' relevant to metal-insulator transition by introducing entropy-like terms. This new quantity well describes the electronic behaviors of transiti…
Taking the orbital degeneracy of $e_g$ conduction bands and the Coulomb interaction into account in a double-exchange model, we investigate charge dynamics of perovskite Mn oxides by the Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s diagonalization method. In the metallic phase near the Mott insulator, it is found that the optical conductivity for a spin-polarized two-dimensional system exhibits a weight transfer to a broad and incoherent structure within the lower-Hubbard band together with a suppressed Drude weight. It reproduces qualitative feature of the experimental results. As an orbital effect, we find that an …
We present our theoretical results on an effective two-band double-exchange model on a pyrochlore lattice for understanding intricate phase competition in Mo pyrochlore oxides. The model includes the twofold degeneracy of $e_g'$ orbitals under trigonal field splitting, the interorbital Coulomb repulsion, the Hund's-rule coupling between itinerant $e_g'$ electrons and localized $a_{1g}$ spins, and the superexchange antiferromagnetic interaction between the $a_{1g}$ spins. By Monte Carlo simulation with treating the Coulomb repulsion at an unrestricted-type mean-field level, we obtain the low-te…
We discuss the notions of spin-orbital polarization and ordering in paramagnetic materials, and address their consequences in transition metal oxides. Extending the combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory scheme to the case of materials with large spin-orbit interactions, we investigate the electronic excitations of the paramagnetic phases of Sr2IrO4 and Sr2RhO4. We show that the interplay of spin-orbit interactions, structural distortions and Coulomb interactions suppresses spin-orbital fluctuations. As a result, the room temperature phase of Sr2IrO4 is a paramagnetic spin…
A very remarkable feature of the layered transition metal oxides (TMOs), whose most famous members are the high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), is that even though they are prepared as bulk three-dimensional single crystals, they display hugely anisotropic electrical and optical properties, seeming to be insulating perpendicular to the layers and metallic within them. This is the phenomenon of confinement, a concept at odds with the conventional theory of solids and recognized as due to magnetic and electron-lattice interactions in the layers which must be overcome at a substantial energy …
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts = 260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting…
I review the microscopic spin-orbital Hamiltonian and ground state properties of spin one-half spinel oxides with threefold $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy. It is shown that for any orbital configuration a ground state of corresponding spin only Hamiltonian is infinitely degenerate in the classical limit. The extensive classical degeneracy is lifted by the quantum nature of the spins, an effect similar to order-out-of-disorder phenomenon by quantum fluctuations. This drives the system to a non-magnetic spin-singlet dimer manifold with a residual degeneracy due to relative orientation of dimers. Th…
The doping induced insulator-metal transition in $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ is studied using the ab-initio LDA+DMFT method. Combining the LDA bandstructure for the actual, distorted structure found recently with multi-orbital DMFT to treat electronic correlations, we find: $(i)$ ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulating state without orbital degeneracy, $(ii)$ a continuous filling induced transition to the paramagnetic metal (PM) with $x$, and $(iii)$ excellent quantitative agreement with published photoemission data for the case of 6% doping. Our results imply that this system can be described …
A new nano-lithography technique compatible with conducting oxide interfaces, which requires a single lithographic step with no additional amorphous layer deposition or etching, is presented. It is demonstrated on SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface where a constriction is patterned in the electron liquid. We find that an additional back-gating can further confine the electron liquid into an isolated island. Conductance and differential conductance measurements show resonant tunneling through the island. The data at various temperatures and magnetic fields are analyzed and the effective island size is fou…
Based on the permutation group formalism, we present a discrete symmetry algebra in QCD. The discrete algebra is hidden symmetry in QCD, which is manifest only on a space-manifold with non-trivial topology. Quark confinement in the presence of the dynamical quarks is discussed in terms of the discrete symmetry algebra. It is shown that the quark deconfinement phase has the ground state degeneracy depending on the topology of the space, which gives a gauge-invariant distinction between the confinement and deconfinement phases. We also point out that new quantum numbers relating to the fractiona…
Cupric oxide is multiferroic at unusual high temperatures. From density functional calculations we find that the low-T magnetic phase is paraelectric and the higher-T one ferroelectric, with a size and direction of polarization in good agreement with experiment. By mapping of the ab initio results on an effective spin model we find with Monte Carlo that in the high-T magnetic state non-collinearity and inversion symmetry breaking stabilize each other via the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. This leads to a novel mechanism for multiferroicity, with the particular property that non-magnetic im…
We consider a model of strongly correlated $e_g$ electrons interacting by superexchange orbital interactions in the ferromagnetic phase of LaMnO$_3$. It is found that the classical orbital order with alternating occupied $e_g$ orbitals has a full rotational symmetry at orbital degeneracy, and the excitation spectrum derived using the linear spin-wave theory is gapless. The quantum (fluctuation) corrections to the order parameter and to the ground state energy restore the cubic symmetry of the model. By applying a uniaxial pressure orbital degeneracy is lifted in a tetragonal field and one find…
It was recently discovered that a conductive, metallic state is formed on the surface of some insulating oxides. Firstly observed on SrTiO$_3$(001), it was then found in other compounds as diverse as anatase TiO$_2$, KTaO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, ZnO, and also on different surfaces of SrTiO$_3$ (or other oxides) with different symmetries. The spatial extension of the wave function of this electronic state is of only a few atomic layers. Experiments indicate its existence is related to the presence of oxygen vacancies induced at or near the surface of the oxide. In this article we present a simplified m…
We determine the optimal conditions to achieve topological superconducting phases having spin-singlet pairing for a planar nanowire with finite lateral width in the presence of an in-plane external magnetic field. We employ a microscopic description that is based on a three-band electronic model including both the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the inversion asymmetric potential at the interface between oxide band-gap insulators. We consider amplitudes of the pairing gap, spin-orbit interactions and electronic parameters that are directly applicable to nanowires of LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$. The lat…
By using intense coherent electromagnetic radiation, it may be possible to manipulate the properties of quantum materials very quickly, or even induce new and potentially useful phases that are absent in equilibrium. For instance, ultrafast control of magnetic dynamics is crucial for a number of proposed spintronic devices and can also shed light on the possible dynamics of correlated phases out of equilibrium. Inspired by recent experiments on spin-orbital ferromagnet YTiO$_3$ we consider the nonequilibrium dynamics of Heisenberg ferromagnetic insulator with low-lying orbital excitations. We …
To describe the metal insulator transition in the new oxide TlSr2CoO5 we investigate its electronic structure by LDA and model Hartree-Fock calculations. Within LDA we find a homogeneous metallic and ferromagnetic ground state, but when including the Coulomb interaction more explicitly within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find an insulating state of lower energy with both spin and orbital order. We also interpret our results in terms of a simple model.
The (SrTiO$_3$)$_m$/(SrVO$_3$)$_n$ $d^0-d^1$ multilayer system is studied with first principles methods through the observed insulator-to-metal transition with increasing thickness of the SrVO$_3$ layer. When correlation effects with reasonable magnitude are included, crystal field splittings from the structural relaxations together with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) determines the behavior of the electronic and magnetic structures. These confined slabs of SrVO$_3$ prefer $Q_{orb}$=($π,π$) orbital ordering of $\ell_z = 0$ and $\ell_z = -1$ ($j_z=-1/2$) orbitals within the plane, accompanied by $Q_…
We argue that the 3A2 state considered by Oles in Phys. Stat. Sol. (b) 236 (2003) 281 for the d2 system occurring in the V3+ ion in V2O3 and LaVO3 as well as in Ti2+ ion in TiO and in many other oxides is wrong. The proper ground state is 3T1g - its 9-fold degeneracy is further split in a crystal by intra-atomic spin-orbit interactions and lattice distortions.
We summarize some characteristic features of the frustrated magnetic interactions in spin-orbital models adequate for cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. A generic tendency towards dimerization, found already in the degenerate Hubbard model, is confirmed for $t_{2g}$ but not for $e_g$ systems. In the $t_{2g}$ case the quantum orbital fluctuations are more pronounced and contribute to a stronger competition between different magnetic and orbital states. Therefore the orbital liquid states exist in some undoped $t_{2g}$ systems, while in the manganites such states can be trigg…
We study a doubly-degenerate orbital model on a honeycomb attice. This is a model for orbital states in multiferroic layered iron oxides. The classical and quantum models are analyzed by spin-wave approximation, Monte-Carlo simulation and Lanczos method. A macroscopic number of degeneracy exists in the classical ground state. In the classical model, a peak in the specific heat appears at a temperature which is much lower than the mean-field ordering one. Below this temperature, angle of orbital pseudo-spin is fixed, but conventional orbital orders are not suggested. The degeneracy in the groun…
The interplay of spin-orbit interactions and Coulomb correlations has become a hot topic in condensed matter theory. Here, we review recent advances in dynamical mean-field theory-based electronic structure calculations for iridates and rhodates. We stress the notion of the effective degeneracy of the compounds, which introduces an additional axis into the conventional picture of a phase diagram based on filling and on the ratio of interactions to bandwidth.
In a form which include the mother compound, we studied the extended Hubbard-type model with the orbital degeneracy for any doping concentration. Meanfield phase diagram and the spin wave excitation in RPA are calculated. It turned out that a large orbital polarization is essential to reproduce the magnetic phases depending on the doping concentration. Base on this result, we discuss the spin canting, the spin wave dispersion, and spin wave stiffness from the standing point of the large orbital polarization. We also discuss the orbital fluctuation which turned out to be important in the ferrom…
Using density functional theory calculations including an on-site Coulomb term, we explore electronic and possibly topologically nontrivial phases in $3d$ transition metal oxide honeycomb layers confined in the corundum structure ($α$-Al$_2$O$_3$) along the [0001] direction. In most cases the ground state is a trivial antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, often with distinct orbital or spin states compared to the bulk phases. With imposed symmetry of the two sublattices the ferromagnetic phases of Ti, Mn, Co and Ni exhibit a characteristic set of four bands, two relatively flat and two with a Dira…
We have synthesized a new spinel oxide LiRh2O4 with a mixed-valent configuration of Rh3+ and Rh4+. At room temperature it is a paramagnetic metal, but on cooling, a metal-insulator transition occurs and a valence bond solid state is formed below 170 K. We argue that the formation of valence bond solid is promoted by a band Jahn-Teller transition at 230 K and the resultant confinement of t2g holes within the xy band. The band Jahn-Teller instability is also responsible for the observed enhanced thermoelectric power in the orbital disordered phase above 230 K.
Transition metal oxides exhibit various competing phases and exotic phenomena depending on how their reaction to the rich degeneracy of the $d$-orbital. Large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) reduces this degeneracy in a unique way by providing a spin-orbital-entangled ground state for 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition metal compounds. In particular, the spin-orbital-entangled Kramers doublet, known as the $J_{\mathbf{eff}}$=1/2 pseudospin, appears in layered iridates and $α$-RuCl$_3$, manifesting a relativistic Mott insulating phase. Such entanglement, however, seems barely attainable in 3$d$ transition meta…
We present an exact ground state solution of a one-dimensional electronic model for transition-metal oxides in the strong coupling limit. The model contains doubly degenerated orbit for itinerant electrons and the Hund coupling between the itinerant electrons and localized spins. The ground state is proven to be a full ferromagnet for any density of electrons. Our model provides a rigorous example for metallic ferromagnetism in narrow band systems. The physical mechanism for ferromagnetism and its relevance to high-dimensional systems, like R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$, are discussed. Due to the orbi…
We employ density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory and identify the physical origin of why two layers of SrVO$_3$ on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate are insulating: the thin film geometry lifts the orbital degeneracy which in turn triggers a Mott-Hubbard transition. Two layers of SrVO$_3$ are just at the verge of a Mott-Hubbard transition and hence ideally suited for technological applications of the Mott-Hubbard transition: the heterostructure is highly sensitive to strain, electric field, and temperature. A gate voltage can also turn the insulator into a metal, so that a transistor w…
Motivated by the absence of cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and of magnetic ordering in LiNiO$_2$, a layered oxide with triangular planes, we study a general spin-orbital model on the triangular lattice. A mean-field approach reveals the presence of several singlet phases between the SU(4) symmetric point and a ferromagnetic phase, a conclusion supported by exact diagonalizations of finite clusters. We argue that one of the phases, characterized by a large number of low-lying singlets associated to dimer coverings of the triangular lattice, could explain the properties of LiNiO$_2$, while a fer…
Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent …
High-spin systems with orbital degeneracy are studied in the large spin limit. In the absence of Hund's coupling, the classical spin model is mapped onto disconnected orbital systems with spins up and down, respectively. The ground state of the isotropic model is an orbital valence bond state where each bond is an orbital singlet with parallel spins, and neighbouring bonds interact antiferromagnetically. The possible relevance to the transition metal oxides are discussed.
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
Exploiting inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) in systems with strong spin-orbit coupling promises control of spin through electric fields - crucial to achieve miniaturization in spintronic devices. Delivering on this promise requires a two-dimensional electron gas with a spin precession length shorter than the spin coherence length and a large spin splitting so that spin manipulation can be achieved over length scales of nanometers. Recently, the transition metal oxide terminations of delafossite oxides were found to exhibit a large Rashba spin splitting dominated by ISB. In this limit, the Fer…
In frustrated systems, some or many states are competed due to frustration of exchange interactions, and this competition often results in exotic states, such as spin liquid and chiral orders. We consider a pyrochlore oxide, a three-dimensional frustrated system, and study its $S=\frac{1}{2}$ effective model, consisting of the Heisenberg-type and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya-type superexchange interactions between the nearest-neighbor transition-metal ions. We show that by using new multiorbital effects of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals on coefficients of those interactions, we can change the effective dimensi…
Structure with orbital degeneracy is unstable toward spontaneous distortion. Such orbital correlation usually has a much higher energy scale than spins, and therefore, magnetic transition takes place at a much lower temperature, almost independently from orbital ordering. However, when the energy scales of orbitals and spins meet, there is a possibility of spin-orbital entanglement that would stabilize novel ground state such as spin-orbital liquid and random singlet state. Here we review on such a novel spin-orbital magnetism found in the hexagonal perovskite oxide Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$, which …
Metallic behavior of band-insulator/ Mott-insulator interfaces was observed in artificial perovskite superlattices such as in nanoscale SrTiO3/LaTiO3 multilayers. Applying a semiclassical perspective to the parallel electronic transport we identify two major ingredients relevant for such systems: i) the quantum confinement of the conduction electrons (superlattice modulation) leads to a complex, quasi-two dimensional subband structure with both hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces. ii) strong electron-electron interaction requires a substantial renormalization of the quasi-particle dispersio…
Interplay between orbital and spin degrees of freedom is theoretically studied for the phase transition to the spin-singlet state with lattice dimerization in pyroxene titanium oxides ATiSi2O6 (A=Na, Li). For the quasi one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems, we derive an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit with explicitly taking account of the t_2g orbital degeneracy, and investigate the model by numerical simulation as well as the mean-field analysis. We find a nontrivial feedback effect between orbital and spin degrees of freedom; as temperature decreases, …
We study theoretically the phase diagram of perovskite manganites taking into account the double degeneracy of the $e_g$ orbitals in a $Mn^{3+}$ ion. A rich phase diagram is obtained in the mean field theory at zero temperature as functions of $x$ (hole concentration) and $J_S$ (antiferromagnetic interaction between $t_{2g}$ spins). The global features of the phase diagram is understood in terms of the superexchange and double exchange interactions, which are strongly depends on types of the occupied $e_g$ orbitals. The strong electron correlation induces the orbital polarization, which contro…
We show that a class of compounds with $I$4/$mcm$ crystalline symmetry hosts three-dimensional semi-Dirac fermions. Unlike the known two-dimensional semi-Dirac points, the degeneracy of these three-dimensional semi-Dirac points is not lifted by spin-orbit coupling due to the protection by a nonsymmorphic symmetry -- screw rotation in the $a-b$ plane and a translation along the $c$ axis. This crystalline symmetry is found in tetragonal perovskite oxides, realizable in thin films by epitaxial strain that results in a$^0$a$^0$c$^-$-type octahedral rotation. Interestingly, with broken time-reversa…
Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model with the 2-1-4 layered perovskite structure as a minimal model for checkerboard charge ordering phenomena in layered perovskite oxides. Due to the interlayer frustration, only 2D long-range order emerges with a finite correlation length along the c axis. Critical exponents of the transition change continuously as a function of the interlayer coupling constant. The interlayer long-range Coulomb interaction decays exponentially and is negligible even between the second-neighbor layers. Instead, monoclinic distortion …
We report on a fundamental thickness limit of the itinerant ferromagnetic oxide SrRuO$_3$ that might arise from the orbital-selective quantum confinement effects. Experimentally, SrRuO$_3$ films remain metallic even for a thickness of 2 unit cells (uc), but the Curie temperature, T$_C$, starts to decrease at 4 uc and becomes zero at 2 uc. Using the Stoner model, we attributed the T$_C$ decrease to a decrease in the density of states (N$_o$). Namely, in the thin film geometry, the hybridized Ru-d$_yz,zx$ orbitals are terminated by top and bottom interfaces, resulting in quantum confinement and …
We perform density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations to investi- gate internal charge transfer in an artificial superlattice composed of alternating layers of vanadate and manganite perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper structure materials. We show that the elec- tronegativity difference between vanadium and manganese causes moderate charge transfer from VO2 to MnO2 layers in both perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based superlattices, leading to hole doping of the VO2 layer and electron doping of the MnO2 layer. Comparison of the perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based h…
The diverse functionality emerging at oxide interfaces calls for a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms and control parameters of electronic reconstructions. Here, we explore the evolution of electronic phases in (LaAlO3)M/(SrTiO3)N(001) superlattices as a function of strain and confinement of the SrTiO3 quantum well. Density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard U term reveal a charge ordered Ti3+ and Ti4+ state for N=2 with an unanticipated orbital reconstruction, displaying alternating dxz and dyz character at the Ti3+ sites, unlike the previously reported dxy state, obt…
Roles of Coulomb interaction, orbital degeneracy and Jahn-Teller coupling in double-exchange models are examined for Mn perovskite oxides. We study the undoped Mott insulator as well as metal-insulator transitions by hole doping, and especially strong incoherence of ferromagnetic metal. We derive models where all the spins are fully polarized in two-dimensional planes as in the experimental indications, and investigate their ground-state properties by quantum Monte Carlo method. At half filling where the number of $e_{g}$ electron is one per site on average, the Coulomb interaction opens a Mot…
"Realistic modeling" is a new direction of electronic structure calculations, where the main emphasis is made on the construction of some effective low-energy model entirely within a first-principle framework. Ideally, it is a model in form, but with all the parameters derived rigorously, on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations. The method is especially suit for transition-metal oxides and other strongly correlated systems, whose electronic and magnetic properties are predetermined by the behavior of some limited number of states located near the Fermi level. After r…
Magnetism of ruthernium pyrochlore oxides A2Ru2O7 (A = Hg, Cd, Ca), whose electronic properties within a localized ion picture are characterized by non-degenerate t2g orbitals (Ru5+, 4d3) and thereby subject to geometrical frustration, has been investigated by muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique. The A cation (mostly divalent) was varied to examine the effect of covalency (Hg > Cd > Ca) on their electronic property. In a sample with A = Hg that exhibits a clear metal-insulator (MI) transition below >> 100 K (which is associated with a weak structural transition), a nearly commensura…
We report spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements of the anisotropy of the interband transitions parallel and perpendicular to the planes of (LaTiO3)n(LaAlO3)5 multilayers with n = 1-3. These provide direct information about the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) 3d^1 state of the Ti ions. In combination with LDA+U calculations, we suggest that 2D confinement in the TiO2 slabs lifts the degeneracy of the t_{2g} states leaving only the planar d_xy orbitals occupied. We outline that these multilayers can serve as a model system for the study of the t_{2g} 2D Hubbard model.
High mobility two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) underpin today's silicon based devices and are of fundamental importance for the emerging field of oxide electronics. Such 2DEGs are usually created by engineering band offsets and charge transfer at heterointerfaces. However, in 2011 it was shown that highly itinerant 2DEGs can also be induced at bare surfaces of different transition metal oxides where they are far more accessible to high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Here we review work from this nascent field which has led to a systematic understanding of th…
In the perovskite Ti oxide RTiO3 (R=rare-earth ions), the Ti t2g orbitals and spins in the 3d^1 state couple each other through the strong electron correlations, resulting in a rich variety of orbital-spin phases. The origin and nature of orbital-spin states of these Mott insulators have been intensively studied. In this article, we review the studies on orbital physics in the perovskite titanates. We focus on the following three topics: (1) the origin and nature of the ferromagnetism as well as the orbital ordering in the compounds with relatively small R ions such as GdTiO3 and YTiO3, (2) th…
We consider the impact of orbital polarons in doped orbitally ordered systems on optical conductivity using the simplest generic model capturing the directional nature of either $t_{2g}$ (or $e_g$) orbital states in certain transition metal oxides, or $p$ orbital states of cold atoms in optical lattices. The origin of the optical transitions is analyzed in detail and we demonstrate that the optical spectra: (i) are determined by the string picture, i.e., flipped orbitals along the hole hopping path, and (ii) consist of three narrow peaks which stem from distinct excitations. They occur within …
Carrier density and disorder are two crucial parameters that control the properties of correlated two-dimensional electron systems. In order to disentangle their individual contributions to quantum phenomena, independent tuning of these two parameters is required. Here, by utilizing a hybrid liquid/solid electric dual-gate geometry acting on the conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerface, we obtain an additional degree of freedom to strongly modify the electron confinement profile and thus the strength of interfacial scattering, independent from the carrier density. A dual-gate controlled nonlin…
Multilayer (TiO$_2$)$_m$/(VO$_2$)$_n$ nanostructures ($d^1$ - $d^0$ interfaces with no polar discontinuity) show a metal-insulator transition with respect to the VO$_2$ layer thickness in first principles calculations. For $n$ $\geq$ 5 layers, the system becomes metallic, while being insulating for $n$ = 1 and 2. The metal-insulator transition occurs through a semi-Dirac point phase for $n$ = 3 and 4, in which the Fermi surface is point-like and the electrons behave as massless along the zone diagonal in k-space and as massive fermions along the perpendicular direction. We provide an analysis …
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
We report on the transport characterization in dark and under light irradiation of three different interfaces: LaAlO3/SrTiO3, LaGaO3/SrTiO3, and the novel NdGaO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. All of them share a perovskite structure, an insulating nature of the single building blocks, a polar/non- polar character and a critical thickness of four unit cells for the onset of conductivity. The interface structure and charge confinement in NdGaO3/SrTiO3 are probed by atomic-scale- resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy showing that, similarly to LaAlO3/SrTiO3, extra electronic charge confined in a s…
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…

The coupling of optical and electronic degrees of freedom together with quantum confinement in low-dimensional electron systems is particularly interesting for achieving exotic functionalities in strongly correlated oxide electronics. Recently, high room-temperature mobility has been achieved for a large bandgap transparent oxide - BaSnO$_3$ upon extrinsic La or Sb doping, which has excited significant research attention. In this work, we report the observation of room-temperature ferromagnetism in BaSnO$_3$ thin films and the realization of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on the surface…
Relativistic massless Dirac fermions can be probed with high-energy physics experiments, but appear also as low-energy quasi-particle excitations in electronic band structures. In condensed matter systems, their massless nature can be protected by crystal symmetries. Classification of such symmetry-protected relativistic band degeneracies has been fruitful, although many of the predicted quasi-particles still await their experimental discovery. Here we reveal, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the existence of two-dimensional type-II Dirac fermions in the high-temperature superc…
