We consider the superspace of D=3, N=5 supersymmetry using SO(5)/U(2) harmonic coordinates. Three analytic N=5 gauge superfields depend on three vector and six harmonic bosonic coordinates and also on six Grassmann coordinates. Decomposition of these superfields in Grassmann and harmonic coordinates yields infinite-dimensional supermultiplets including a three-dimensional gauge Chern-Simons field and auxiliary bosonic and fermionic fields carrying SO(5) vector indices. The superfield action of this theory is invariant with respect to D=3, N=6 conformal supersymmetry realized on N=5 superfields.
We review harmonic superspaces of the D=3, N=3 and 4 supersymmetries and gauge models in these superspaces. Superspaces of the D=3, N=5 supersymmetry use harmonic coordinates of the SO(5) group. The superfield N=5 actions describe the off-shell infinite-dimensional Chern-Simons supermultiplet.
In this paper we apply a supersymmetric generalization of the method of derivative expansion to compute the induced non-Abelian Chern-Simons term in $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=3$ superspace, for an arbitrary gauge group.
The superspace geometry of Chern-Simons forms is shown to be closely related to that of the 3-form multiplet. This observation allows to simplify considerably the geometric structure of supersymmetric Chern-Simons forms and their coupling to linear multiplets. The analysis is carried through in U_K(1) superspace, relevant at the same time for supergravity-matter couplings and for chirally extended supergravity.
In this paper we will study non-abelian Chern-Simons theory on a deformed superspace. We will deform the superspace in such a way that it includes the noncommutativity between bosonic and fermionic coordinates. We will first analyse the BRST and the anti-BRST symmetries of the Chern-Simons theory on this deformed superspace. Then we will analyse the extended BRST and the extended anti-BRST symmetries of this theory in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Finally, we will express these extended BRST and extended anti-BRST symmetries in extended superspace formalism by introducing new Grassman…
We construct an action for the superconformal Chern-Simons theory with non-Abelian gauge groups in three-dimensional N=3 projective superspace. We propose a Lagrangian given by the product of the function of the tropical multiplet, that represents the N=3 vector multiplet, and the O(-1,1) multiplet. We show how the tropical multiplet is embedded into the O(-1,1) multiplet by comparing our Lagrangian with the Chern- Simons Lagrangian in the N=2 superspace. We also discuss N=4 generalization of the action.
We present a new, alternative interpretation of the vector-tensor multiplet as a 2-form in central charge superspace. This approach provides a geometric description of the (non-trivial) central charge transformations ab initio and is naturally generalized to include couplings of Chern-Simons forms to the antisymmetric tensor gauge field, giving rise to a N=2 supersymmetric version of the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism.
We discuss the extended BRST and anti-BRST symmetry (including shift symmetry) in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formulation for the Chern-Simons (CS) theories in $(2+1)$ spacetime dimensions. Further we develop the superspace description of BV formulation for such theories. Interestingly, the extended BRST invariant CS theories can be described in superspace in covariant manner with the help of one more (Grassmann) coordinate. However, a superspace with two Grassmann coordinates are required for a manifestly covariant formulation of the extended BRST and extended anti-BRST invariant actions for …
We discuss the problem of infrared divergences in the N=2 superspace approach to classically marginal three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories. Considering the specific case of ABJM theory, we describe the origin of such divergences and offer a prescription to eliminate them by introducing non-trivial gauge-fixing terms in the action. We also comment on the extension of our procedure to higher loop order and to general three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter models.
We search for superspace Chern-Simons-like higher-derivative terms in the low energy effective actions of supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Superspace Chern-Simons-like terms are those gauge-invariant terms which cannot be written solely in terms of field strength superfields and covariant derivatives, but in which a gauge potential superfield appears explicitly. We find one class of such four-derivative terms with N=2 supersymmetry which, though locally on the Coulomb branch can be written solely in terms of field strengths, globally cannot be. These terms are classified by certain …
We gauge the abelian hierarchy of tensor fields in 4D by a Lie algebra. The resulting non-abelian tensor hierarchy can be interpreted via an equivariant chain complex. We lift this structure to N=1 superspace by constructing superfield analogs for the tensor fields, along with covariant superfield strengths. Next we construct Chern-Simons actions, for both the bosonic and N=1 cases, and note that the condition of gauge invariance can be presented cohomologically. Finally, we provide an explicit realization of these structures by dimensional reduction, for example by reducing the three-form of …
In this paper, we will analyse a three dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in SIM(1) superspace formalism. The breaking of the Lorentz symmetry down to the SIM(1) symmetry, breaks half the supersymmetry of the Lorentz invariant theory. So, the supersymmetry of the Lorentz invariant Chern-Simons theory with N=1 supersymmetry will break down to N=1/2 supersymmetry, when the Lorentz symmetry is broken down to the SIM(1) symmetry. First, we will write the Chern-Simons action using SIM(1) projections of N=1 superfields. However, as the SIM(1) transformations of these projections are very…
For extended $\mathcal{N}\leq 8$ supersymmetry we classify all possible gauge groups for a scalar multiplet allowed by the algebras of global and local supersymmetry in three dimensions. A detailed discussion of supersymmetry enhancement is included. For the corresponding topologically massive gravity with negative cosmological constant the mass of the graviton is determined algebraically as a function of $\mathcal{N}$ and the possible gauge couplings.
We develop the background field method for studying classical and quantum aspects of N=3, d=3 Chern-Simons and matter theories in N=3 harmonic superspace. As one of the immediate consequences, we prove a nonrenormalization theorem implying the ultra-violet finiteness of the corresponding supergraph perturbation theory. We also derive the general hypermultiplet and gauge superfield propagators in a Chern-Simons background. The leading supergraphs with two and four external lines are evaluated. In contrast to the non-supersymmetric theory, the leading quantum correction to the massive charged hy…
Using N=2 superspace techniques we compute the four-loop spectrum of single trace operators in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of ABJM and ABJ supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories. Our computation yields a four-loop contribution to the function h^2(λ) (and its ABJ generalization) in the magnon dispersion relation which has fixed maximum transcendentality and coincides with the findings in components given in the revised versions of arXiv:0908.2463 and arXiv:0912.3460. We also discuss possible scenarios for an all-loop function h^2(λ) that interpolates between weak and strong couplings.
We apply the concepts of superanalysis to present an intrinsically supersymmetric formulation of the Chern character in entire cyclic cohomology. We show that the cocycle condition is closely related to the invariance under supertranslations. Using the formalism of superfields, we find a path integral representation of the index of the generalized Dirac operator.
We present a superspace formulation of the D=3, N=4,5 superconformal Chern-Simons Matter theories, with matter supermultiplets valued in a symplectic 3-algebra. We first construct an N=1 superconformal action, and then generalize a method used by Gaitto and Witten to enhance the supersymmetry from N=1 to N=5. By decomposing the N=5 supermultiplets and the symplectic 3-algebra properly and proposing a new super-potential term, we construct the N=4 superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories in terms of two sets of generators of a (quaternion) symplectic 3-algebra. The N=4 theories can also be d…
With the goal of constructing the supersymmetric action for all fields, massless and massive, obtained by Kaluza-Klein compactification from type II theory or M-theory in a closed form, we embed the (Abelian) tensor hierarchy of p-forms in four-dimensional, N=1 superspace and construct its Chern-Simons-like invariants. When specialized to the case in which the tensors arise from a higher-dimensional theory, the invariants may be interpreted as higher-dimensional Chern-Simons forms reduced to four dimensions. As an application of the formalism, we construct the eleven-dimensional Chern-Simons f…
A two-form formulation for the N=2 vector-tensor multiplet is constructed using superfield methods in central charge superspace. The N=2 non-Abelian standard supergauge multiplet in central charge superspace is also discussed, as is with the associated Chern-Simons form. We give the constraints, solve the Bianchi identities and present the action for a theory of the vector-tensor multiplet coupled to the non-Abelian supergauge multiplet via the Chern-Simons form.
We comment on the calculation of the Chern-Simons coefficient in (2+1)-dimensional gauge theories at finite chemical potential made by A.N.Sissakian, O.Yu.Shevchenko and S.B.Solganik (hep-th/9608159 and hep-th/9612140).
By taking into account the effect of the would be Chern-Simons term, we calculate the quantum correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient in supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories with matter fields in the fundamental representation of SU(n). Because of supersymmetry, the corrections in the symmetric and Higgs phases are identical. In particular, the correction is vanishing for N=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories. The result should be quite general, and have important implication for the more interesting case when the Higgs is in the adjoint representation.
In this article it is studied the 3-brane world in the context of five-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity. We started by considering Israel's junction condition for AdS-Chern-Simons gravity. Using the S-expansion procedure, we mapped the AdS-Chern-Simons junction conditions to Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity, allowing us to derive effective four-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons field equations.
We present a closed-form expression for the supersymmetric non-Abelian Chern-Simons action in conventional five-dimensional N=1 superspace. Our construction makes use of the superform formalism to generate supersymmetric invariants. Similar ideas are applied to construct supersymmetric actions for off-shell supermultiplets with an intrinsic central charge. In particular, the large tensor multiplet is described in superspace for the first time.
We study a three-dimensional symmetric Chern-Simons field theory with a general covariance and it turns out that the original Chern-Simons theory is just a gauge fixed action of the symmetric Chern-Simons theory whose constraint algebra belongs to fully first class constraint system. The Abelian Chern-Simons theory with matter coupling is studied for the construction of anyon operators without any ordering ambiguity with the help of this symmetric Chern-Simons action. Finally we shall discuss some connections between the present symmetric formulation of Chern-Simons theory and the Stükelberg m…
We consider the off-shell formulation of the 5D, $ {\cal N}$=1 super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons theories in harmonic superspace. Using such a formulation we develop a manifestly supersymmetric and gauge invariant approach to constructing the one-loop effective action both in super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons models. On the base of this approach we compute the leading low-energy quantum contribution to the effective action on the Abelian vector multiplet background. This contribution corresponds to $F^4$ invariant which is given in 5D superfield form.
By analyzing the odd parity part of the gauge field two and three point vertex functions, the one-loop radiative correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient is computed in noncommutative Chern-Simons-Higgs model at zero and at high temperature. At high temperature, we show that the static limit of this correction is proportional to $T$ but the first noncommutative correction increases as $T\log T$. Our results are analytic functions of the noncommutative parameter.
A perturbative analysis of a massive Chern-Simons is presented. The mass term is introduced in a BRST invariant way. With these method we prove that the number of independent renormalisation of massive Chern-Simons is equal to topologically massive Yang-Mills and different from pure Chern-Simons.
Noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in 3-dimensions is defined in terms of star product and noncommutative fields. Seiberg-Witten map is employed to write it in terms of ordinary fields. A parent action is introduced and the dual action is derived. For spatial noncommutativity it is studied up to second order in the noncommutativity parameter θ. A new noncommutative Chern-Simons action is defined in terms of ordinary fields, inspired by the dual action. Moreover, a transformation between noncommuting and ordinary fields is proposed.
We study the manifestly covariant three-dimensional symmetric Chern-Simons action in terms of the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization method. We find that the Lorentz covariant gauge fixed version of this action is reduced to the usual Chern-Simons type action after a proper field redefinition. Furthermore, the renormalizability of the symmetric Chern-Simons theory turns out to be the same as that of the original Chern-Simons theory.
We give a geometric description of supersymmetric gravity/(non-)abelian $p$-form hierarchies in superspaces with 4D, $N = 1$ super-Poincare invariance. These hierarchies give rise to Chern-Simons-like invariants, such as those of the 5D, $N = 1$ graviphoton and the eleven-dimensional 3-form but also generalizations such as Green-Schwarz-like/BF-type couplings. Previous constructions based on prepotential superfields are reinterpreted in terms of $p$-forms in superspace thereby elucidating the underlying geometry. This vastly simplifies the calculations of superspace field-strengths, Bianchi id…
Some of supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories are known to exhibit supersymmetry breaking when the Chern-Simons level is less than a certain number. The mechanism of the supersymmetry breaking is, however, not clear from the field theory viewpoint. In this paper, we discuss vacuum states of ${\cal N}=2$ pure Chern-Simons theory and ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theories of quiver type using related theories in which Chern-Simons terms are replaced with (anti-)fundamental chiral multiplets. In the latter theories, supersymmetry breaking can be shown to occur by examining that the vacuum energ…
Some general features of locally supersymmetric theories (N=1 in four dimensions) involving Chern-Simons forms and antisymmetric tensors are sketched out. The relevance of the three-form multiplet both for the description of Chern-Simons forms and the supersymmetry properties of the gaugino condensate is pointed out.
We construct parity and time reversal invariant Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to fermions with adding the parity partner to the matter and the gauge fields, which can give nontopological vortex solutions depending on the sign of the Chern-Simons coupling constant.
I present two calculations of the holographic Weyl anomalies induced by Chern-Simons gravity theories alternative to the ones presented in the literature. The calculations presented here rest on the extension from Chern-Simons to Transgression forms as lagrangians, motivated by gauge invariance, which automatically yields the boundary terms suitable to regularize the theory. The procedure followed here sheds light in the structure of Chern-Simons gravities and their regularization.
We derive the noncommutative Chern-Simons action induced by Dirac fermions coupled to a background gauge field, for the fundamental, antifundamental, and the adjoint representation. We discuss properties of the noncommutative Chern-Simons action showing in particular that the Seiberg-Witten formula maps it into the standard commutative Chern-Simons action.
We compute the form of the Lagrangian of N=1 supersymmetric theories with gauged axion symmetries. It turns out that there appear generalized Chern-Simons terms that were not considered in previous superspace formulations of general N=1 theories. Such gaugings appear in supergravities arising from flux compactifications of superstrings, as well as from Scherk-Schwarz generalized dimensional reduction in M-theory. We also present the dual superspace formulation where axion chiral multiplets are dualized into linear multiplets.
The relation between the Dirac quantization condition of magnetic charge and the quantization of the Chern-Simons coefficient is obtained. It implies that in a (2+1)-dimensional QED with the Chern-Simons topological mass term and the existence of a magnetic monopole with magnetic charge $g$, the Chern-Simons coefficient must be also quantized, just as in the non-Abelian case.
The relation between open topological strings and Chern-Simons theory was discovered by E. Witten. He proved that A-model on T*M where M is a three-dimensional manifold is equivalent to Chern-Simons theory on M and that A-model on arbitrary Calabi-Yau 3-fold is related to Chern-Simons theory with instanton corrections. In present paper we discuss multidimensional generalization of these results.
The BRST quantization of matrix Chern-Simons theory is carried out, the symmetries of the theory are analysed and used to constrain the form of the effective action.
We explain how static multi-vortex solutions arise in non-linear field theories, by taking the non-linear Schrödinger equation coupled to Chern-Simons field (Jackiw-Pi model) and a fermion Chern-Simons theory as simple examples. We then construct a fermion Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory which has consistent static field equations, and show that it has the same vortex solutions as the Jackiw-Pi model, but gives rise to quite different vortex dynamics.
We show explicitly that the question of gauge invariance of the effective potential in standard scalar electrodynamics remains unchanged despite the introduction of the Chern-Simons term. The result does not depend on the presence of the Maxwell term in the Chern-Simons territory.
We study one-loop correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient $κ=k/4π$ in $N=1,2,3$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills Chern-Simons systems. In the pure bosonic case, the shift of the parameter $k$ is known to be $k\rightarrow k + c_v$, where $c_v$ is the quadratic Casimir of the gauge group. In the $N=1$ case, the fermionic contribution cancels the bosonic contribution by half and the shift is $k \rightarrow k+ c_v/2$, making the theory anomalous if $c_v$ is odd. In the $N=2,3$ cases, the fermionic contribution cancels the bosonic contribution completely and there is no correction. We also calculate th…
The use of the physical variables in the fashion of Dirac in the three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories is presented. Our previous results are reinterpreted in a new aspect.
The renormalization of the Chern-Simons parameter is investigated by using an exact and manifestly gauge invariant evolution equation for the scale-dependent effective average action.
The large-mass behaviour of loop variables in Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is analysed by means of a gauge-field transformation which allows to reset the Maxwell-Chern-Simons action to pure Chern-Simons.
We argue that N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories exhibit a strong-weak coupling Seiberg-type duality. We also discuss supersymmetry breaking in these theories.
We study the effect of noncommutative Chern-Simons term on fundamental fermions. In particular the one-loop contribution to the magnetic moment to order $þ$ is calculated.
Strong/weak coupling duality in Chern-Simons supergravity is studied. It is argued that this duality can be regarded as an example of superduality. The use of supergroup techniques for the description of Chern-Simons supergravity greatly facilitates the analysis.
We consider here a generalization of the Abelian Higgs model in curved space, by adding a Chern--Simons term. The static equations are self-dual provided we choose a suitable potential. The solutions give a self-dual Maxwell--Chern--Simons soliton that possesses a mass and a spin.
We quantize the Maxwell Chern Simons theory in a geometric representation that generalizes the Abelian Loop Representation of Maxwell theory. We find that in the physical sector, the model can be seen as the theory of a massles scalar field with a topological interaction that enforces the wave functional to be multivalued. This feature allows to relate the Maxwell Chern Simons theory with the quantum mechanics of particles interacting through a Chern Simons field
We study the relation between the partition function of refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons on the 3-sphere and the universal Chern-Simons partition function in the sense of Mkrtchyan and Veselov. We find a four-parameter generalization of the integral representation of universal Chern-Simons that includes refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons for special values of parameters. The large N expansion of the integral representation of refined SU(N) Chern-Simons explicitly shows the replacement of the virtual Euler characteristic of the moduli space of complex curves with a refined Euler charact…
