We prove that the eigenvalues of a certain highly non-self-adjoint operator that arises in fluid mechanics correspond, up to scaling by a positive constant, to those of a self-adjoint operator with compact resolvent; hence there are infinitely many real eigenvalues which accumulate only at $\pm \infty$. We use this result to determine the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues and to compute some of the eigenvalues numerically. We compare these to earlier calculations by other authors.
We find conditions on the potential of the non-self-adjoint Mathieu-Hill operator such that the all eigenvalues of the periodic, antiperiodic, Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems are simple.
We analyze eigenvalues emerging from thresholds of the essential spectrum of one-dimensional Dirac operators perturbed by complex and non-symmetric potentials. In the general non-self-adjoint setting we establish the existence and asymptotics of weakly coupled eigenvalues and Lieb-Thirring inequalities. As physical applications we investigate the damped wave equation and armchair graphene nanoribbons.
In this paper, inequalities among eigenvalues of different self-adjoint discrete Sturm-Liouville problems are established. For a fixed discrete Sturm-Liouville equation, inequalities among eigenvalues for different boundary conditions are given. For a fixed boundary condition, inequalities among eigenvalues for different equations are given. These results are obtained by applying continuity and discontinuity of the n-th eigenvalue function, monotonicity in some direction of the n-th eigenvalue function, which were given in our previous papers, and natural loops in the space of boundary conditi…
A lower semi-definite self-adjoint linear operator in a Hilbert space is taken whose discrete spectrum is not empty and comprises at least several eigenvalues $λ_{min}=λ_1\leqslant\ldots\leqslantλ_m<σ_{ess}$. The problem of approximation of these eigenvalues by eigenvalues of some linear operator in a finite-dimensional space of the dimension $s$ is considered and solved. The accuracy of the approximation obtained becomes unlimitedly high as $s\to\infty$.
In this paper, we give Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for isolated eigenvalues of $d$-dimensional non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators with complex-valued and dilation analytic potentials. In order to derive them, we prove that isolated eigenvalues and their multiplicities are invariant under complex dilation.
In this work, we find the asymptotic formulas for the sum of the negative eigenvalues smaller than $-\varepsilon$ $(\varepsilon >0)$ of a self-adjoint operator $L$ which is defined by the following differential expression $$\ell(y)=-(p(x)y'(x))'-Q(x)y(x)$$ with the boundary condition $y(0) = 0$ in the space in the space $L_{2}(0,\infty ;H)$.
In this paper we study a family of operators dependent on a small parameter $ε> 0$, which arise in a problem in fluid mechanics. We show that the spectra of these operators converge to N as $ε\to 0$, even though, for fixed $ε> 0$, the eigenvalue asymptotics are quadratic.
This paper is concerned with continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue on self-adjoint discrete Sturm-Liouville problems. The n-th eigenvalue is considered as a function in the space of the problems. A necessary and sufficient condition for all the eigenvalue functions to be continuous and several properties of the eigenvalue functions in a set of the space of the problems are given. They play an important role in the study of continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue function on the problems. Continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue function on the equations and on the boundary cond…
The goal of the paper is to investigate the dynamics of the eigenvalues of the Sturm-Liouville operator with summable PT-symmetric potential on the finite interval. It turns out that the case of a complex Airy operator presents an exactly solvable model which allows us to trace the dynamics of the movement of the eigenvalues in all details and to find explicitly the critical parameter values, in particular, to specify precisely the number $\varepsilon_1$ such that for $0<\varepsilon<\varepsilon_1$ the operator has a real spectrum and is similar to a self-adjoint operator.
We study perturbations of a self-adjoint positive operator $T$, provided that a perturbation operator $B$ satisfies "local" subordinate condition $\|Bφ_k\|\leqslant bμ_k^β$ with some $β<1$ and $b>0$. Here $\{φ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$ is an orthonormal system of the eigenvectors of the operator $T$ corresponding to the eigenvalues $\{μ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$. We introduce the concept of $α$-non-condensing sequence and prove the theorem on the comparison of the eigenvalue-counting functions of the operators $T$ and $T+B$. Namely, it is shown that if $\{μ_k\}$ is $α-$non-condensing then the difference of th…
In this work we extend a previous work about the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint differential operators with small multiplicative random perturbations, by treating the case of operators on compact manifolds
This paper deals with the computation of the eigenvalues of non self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville problems with parameter dependent boundary conditions using the \textit{regularized sampling method}. A few numerical examples among which singular ones will be presented to illustrate the merit of the method and comparison made with the exact eigenvalues when they are available.
We consider the non-self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval. The inverse spectral problem is studied, which consists in recovering this operator from its eigenvalues and generalized weight numbers. We prove local solvability and stability of this inverse problem, relying on the method of spectral mappings. Possible splitting of multiple eigenvalues is taken into account.
In this work we continue the study of the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint (pseudo)differential operators with small random perturbations, by treating the case of multiplicative perturbations in arbitrary dimension. We were led to quite essential improvements of many of the probabilistic aspects.
We study the spectrum of unbounded J-self-adjoint block operator matrices. In particular, we prove enclosures for the spectrum, provide a sufficient condition for the spectrum being real and derive variational principles for certain real eigenvalues even in the presence of non-real spectrum. The latter lead to lower and upper bounds and asymptotic estimates for eigenvalues.
We revisit an archive submission by P. B. Denton, S. J. Parke, T. Tao, and X. Zhang, arXiv:1908.03795, on $n \times n$ self-adjoint matrices from the point of view of self-adjoint Dirichlet Schrödinger operators on a compact interval.
Resolution of a compact group action in the sense described by Albin and Melrose is applied to the conjugation action by the unitary group on self-adjoint matrices. It is shown that the eigenvalues are smooth on the resolved space and that the trivial bundle smoothly decomposes into the direct sum of global one-dimensional eigenspaces.
We investigate the behaviour of the eigenvalues of two-dimensional Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields perturbed by a sign-indefinite decaying electric potential V. We prove new eigenvalues asymptotics.
This paper deals with spectral graph theory issues related to questions of monotonicity and comparison of eigenvalues. We consider finite directed graphs with non symmetric edge weights and we introduce a special self-adjoint operator as the sum of two non self-adjoint Laplacians. We investigate how the perturbation of the graph can affect the eigenvalues. Our approach is to take well known techniques from finite dimensional matrix analysis and show how they can be generalized for graph Laplacians.
We consider the problem of how to compute eigenvalues of a self-adjoint operator when a direct application of the Galerkin (finite-section) method is unreliable. The last two decades have seen the development of the so-called quadratic methods for addressing this problem. Recently a new perturbation approach has emerged, the idea being to perturb eigenvalues off the real line and, consequently, away from regions where the Galerkin method fails. We propose a simplified perturbation method which requires no á priori information and for which we provide a rigorous convergence analysis. The latter…
In the first part of this manuscript a relationship between the spectrum of self-adjoint operator matrices and the spectra of their diagonal entries is found. This leads to enclosures for spectral points and in particular, enclosures for eigenvalues. We also consider graph invariant subspaces, and their corresponding angular operators. The existence of a bounded angular operator leads to basis properties of the first component of eigenvectors of operator matrices for which the corresponding eigenvalues lie in a half line. The results are applied to an example from magnetohydrodynamics.
It is well known that the standard projection methods allow one to recover the whole spectrum of a bounded self-adjoint operator but they often lead to spectral pollution, i.e. to spurious eigenvalues lying in the gaps of the essential spectrum. Methods using second order relative spectra are free from this problem, but they have not been proven to approximate the whole spectrum. L. Boulton (2006, 2007) has shown that second order relative spectra approximate all isolated eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. The main result of the present paper is that second order relative spectra do not in ge…
In this note we compare two recent results about the distribution of eigenvalues for semi-classical pseudodifferential operators in two dimensions. For classes of analytic operators A. Melin and the author obtained a complex Bohr-Sommerfeld rule, showing that the eigenvalues are situated on a distorted lattice. On the other hand, with M. Hager we showed in any dimension that Weyl asymptotics holds with probability close to 1 for small random perturbations of the operator. In both cases the eigenvalues distribute to leading order according two smooth densities and we show here that the two dens…
Using simple commutator relations, we obtain several trace identities involving eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of an abstract self-adjoint operator acting in a Hilbert space. Applications involve abstract universal estimates for the eigenvalue gaps. As particular examples, we present simple proofs of the classical universal estimates for eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian (Payne-Polya-Weinberger, Hile-Protter, etc.), as well as of some known and new results for other differential operators and systems. We also suggest an extension of the methods to the case of non-self-adjoint operators.
We present a survey of some recent results concerning the location and the Weyl formula for the complex eigenvalues of two non self-adjoint operators. We study the eigenvalues of the generator $G$ of the contraction semigroup $e^{tG}, \: t \geq 0,$ related to the wave equation in an unbounded domain $Ω$ with dissipative boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$. Also one examines the interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) in a bounded domain $K$ obtaining a Weyl formula with remainder for the counting function $N(r)$ of complex (ITE). The analysis is based on a semi-classical approach.
For a given self-adjoint operator $A$ with discrete spectrum, we completely characterize possible eigenvalues of its rank-one perturbations~$B$ and discuss the inverse problem of reconstructing $B$ from its spectrum.
We study the Laplacian in a smooth bounded domain, with a varying Robin boundary condition singular at one point. The associated quadratic form is not semi-bounded from below, and the corresponding Laplacian is not self-adjoint, it has the residual spectrum covering the whole complex plane. We describe its self-adjoint extensions and exhibit a physically relevant skew-symmetric one. We approximate the boundary condition, giving rise to a family of self-adjoint operators, and we describe their eigenvalues by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. These eigenvalues acquire a strange behavi…
We characterize possible spectra of rank-one perturbations B of a self-adjoint operator A with discrete spectrum and, in particular, prove that the spectrum of B may include any number of real or non-real eigenvalues of arbitrary algebraic multiplicity
This paper deals with the inverse spectral problem for a non-self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operator with discontinuous conditions inside the interval. We obtain that if the potential $q$ is known a priori on a subinterval $ \left[ b,π\right] $ with $b\in \left( d,π\right] $ or $b=d$, then $h,$ $β,$ $γ\ $and $q$ on $\left[ 0,π\right] \ $can be uniquely determined by partial spectral data consisting of a sequence of eigenvalues and a subsequence of the corresponding generalized normalizing constants or a subsequence of the pairs of eigenvalues and the corresponding generalized ratios. For the cas…
We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.
In [arXiv:0801.0172] we examined a family of periodic Sturm-Liouville problems with boundary and interior singularities which are highly non-self-adjoint but have only real eigenvalues. We now establish Schatten class properties of the associated resolvent operator.
This note aims to give prominence to some new results on the absence and localization of eigenvalues for the Dirac and Klein-Gordon operators, starting from known resolvent estimates already established in the literature combined with the renowned Birman-Schwinger principle.
We study eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators on non-trapping asymptotically conic manifolds of dimension $n\ge 3$. Specifically, we are concerned with the following two types of estimates. The first one deals with Keller type bounds on individual eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator with a complex potential in terms of the $L^p$-norm of the potential, while the second one is a Lieb-Thirring type bound controlling sums of powers of eigenvalues in terms of the $L^p$-norm of the potential. We extend the results of Frank (2011), Frank-Sabin (2017), and Frank-Simon (2017) on th…
For integers $m\geq 3$, we study the non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problems $-u^{\prime\prime}(x)+(x^m+P(x))u(x)=E u(x)$, $0\leq x<+\infty$, with the boundary conditions $u(+\infty)=0$ and $αu(0)+βu^{\prime}(0)=0$ for some $α, β\in\C$ with $|α|+|β|\not=0$, where $P(x)=a_1 x^{m-1}+a_2 x^{m-2}+...+a_{m-1} x$ is a polynomial. We provide asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalue counting function and the eigenvalues $E_{n}$. Then we apply these to the inverse spectral problem, reconstructing some coefficients of polynomial potentials from asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions which guarantee the total absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the half-space, subject to variable complex Robin boundary conditions. As a further application of this technique, uniform resolvent estimates are derived under the same assumptions on the potential. Some of the results are new even in the self-adjoint setting, where we obtain quantum-mechanically natural conditions.
We prove the absence of eigenvaues of the three-dimensional Dirac operator with non-Hermitian potentials in unbounded regions of the complex plane under smallness conditions on the potentials in Lebesgue spaces. Our sufficient conditions are quantitative and easily checkable.
In this article we obtain the asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the nonself-adjoint operator generated by a system of Sturm-Liouville equations with summable coefficients and the quasiperiodic boundary conditions. Then using these asymptotic formulas, we find the conditions on the potential for which the root funcions of this operator form a Riesz basis.
Recently, a trace formula for non-self-adjoint periodic Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ associated with Dirichlet eigenvalues was proved in [9]. Here we prove a corresponding trace formula associated with Neumann eigenvalues. In addition we investigate Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of such operators. In particular, using the Dirichlet and Neumann trace formulas we provide detailed information on location of the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues for the model operator with the potential $Ke^{2ix}$, where $K\in\mathbb{C}$.
We obtain the asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville operators with some regular boundary conditions. Using these formulas, we find sufficient conditions on the potential q such that the root functions of these operators do not form a Riesz basis.
We study the eigenvalues of the non-self adjoint problem $-y^{\prime\prime}+V(x)y=E y$ on the half-line $0\leq x<+\infty$ under the Robin boundary condition at $x=0$, where $V$ is a monic polynomial of degree $\geq 3$. We obtain a Bohr-Sommerfeld-like asymptotic formula for $E_n$ that depends on the boundary conditions. Consequently, we solve certain inverse spectral problems, recovering the potential $V$ and boundary condition from the first $(m+2)$ terms of the asymptotic formula.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the spectrum of the non-self-adjoint one-particle Hamiltonian proposed by J. Feinberg and A. Zee (Phys. Rev. E 59 (1999), 6433--6443) has interior points. We do this by first recalling that the spectrum of this random operator is the union of the set of $\ell^\infty$ eigenvalues of all infinite matrices with the same structure. We then construct an infinite matrix of this structure for which every point of the open unit disk is an $\ell^\infty$ eigenvalue, this following from the fact that the components of the eigenvector are polynomials in the spect…
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
In this work, we use regularized determinant approach to study the discrete spectrum generated by relatively compact non-self-adjoint perturbations of the magnetic Schrödinger operator $(-i\nabla - \textbf{\textup{A}})^{2} - b$ in dimension $3$ with constant magnetic field of strength $b>0$. The situation near the Landau levels $2bq$, $q \in \mathbb{N}$, is more interesting since they play the role of thresholds of the spectrum of the free operator. First, we obtain sharp upper bounds on the number of the complex eigenvalues near the Landau levels. Under appropriate hypothesis, we then prove t…
We address the count of isolated and embedded eigenvalues in a generalized eigenvalue problem defined by two self-adjoint operators with a positive essential spectrum and a finite number of isolated eigenvalues. The generalized eigenvalue problem determines spectral stability of nonlinear waves in a Hamiltonian dynamical system. The theory is based on the Pontryagin's Invariant Subspace theorem in an indefinite inner product space but it extends beyond the scope of earlier papers of Pontryagin, Krein, Grillakis, and others. Our main results are (i) the number of unstable and potentially unstab…
In this expository article some spectral properties of self-adjoint differential operators are investigated. The main objective is to illustrate and (partly) review how one can construct domains or potentials such that the essential or discrete spectrum of a Schrödinger operator of a certain type (e.g. the Neumann Laplacian) coincides with a predefined subset of the real line. Another aim is to emphasize that the spectrum of a differential operator on a bounded domain or bounded interval is not necessarily discrete, that is, eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity, continuous spectrum, and eigenv…
In this article we obtain asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the non-self-adjoint operator generated in space of vector-functions by the Sturm-Liouville equation with m by m matrix potential and the boundary conditions whose scalar case (m=1) are strongly regular. Using these asymptotic formulas, we find a condition on the potential for which the root functions of this operator form a Riesz basis.
New estimates for eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint multi-dimensional Schrödinger operators are obtained in terms of $L_{p}$-norms of the potentials. The results extend and improve those obtained previously. In particular, diverse versions of an assertion conjectured by Laptev and Safronov are discussed. Schrödinger operators with slowly decaying potentials are also considered.
