Here we consider a class of $2\otimes2\otimes d$ chessboard density matrices starting with three-qubit ones which have positive partial transposes with respect to all subsystems. To investigate the entanglement of these density matrices, we use the entanglement witness approach. For constructing entanglement witnesses (EWs) detecting these density matrices, we attempt to convert the problem to an exact convex optimization problem. To this aim, we map the convex set of separable states into a convex region, named feasible region, and consider cases that the exact geometrical shape of feasible region can be obtained. In this way, various linear and non-linear EWs are constructed. The optimality and decomposability of some of introduced EWs are also considered. Furthermore, the detection of the density matrices by introduced EWs are discussed analytically and numerically.

Two classes of Bell diagonal indecomposable entanglement witnesses in $\mathbb{C}^4 \otimes \mathbb{C}^4$ are considered. Within the first class, we find a generalization of the well-known Choi witness from $\mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3$, while the second one contains the reduction map. Interestingly, contrary to $\mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3$ case, the generalized Choi witnesses are no longer optimal. We perform an optimization procedure of finding spanning vectors, that eventually gives rise to optimal witnesses. Operators from the second class turn out to be optimal, however, with…
We provide a new class of entanglement witnesses for $d \ot d$ systems (two qudits). Our construction generalizes the one proposed recently by Jafarizadeh et al. for $d=3$ and $d=4$ on the basis of semidefinite linear programming. Moreover, we provide a new class of PPT entangled states detected by our witnesses which generalizes well known family of states constructed by Horodecki et al. for $d=3$.
It has been shown that finding generic Bell states diagonal entanglement witnesses (BDEW) for $d_{1}\otimes d_{2}\otimes ....\otimes d_{n}$ systems exactly reduces to a linear programming if the feasible region be a polygon by itself and approximately obtains via linear programming if the feasible region is not a polygon. Since solving linear programming for generic case is difficult, the multi-qubits, $2\otimes N$ and $3 \otimes 3$ systems for the special case of generic BDEW for some particular choice of their parameters have been considered. In the rest of this paper we obtain the optimal n…
Let $Φ_{t,π}: M_3({\mathbb C}) \rightarrow M_3({\mathbb C})$ be a linear map defined by $Φ_{t,π}(A)=(3-t)\sum_{i=1}^3E_{ii}AE_{ii}+t\sum_{i=1}^3E_{i,π(i)}AE_{i,π(i)}^†-A$, where $0\leq t\leq 3$ and $π$ is a permutation of $(1,2,3)$. We show that the Hermitian matrix $W_{Φ_{t,π}}$ induced by $Φ_{t,π}$ is an optimal entanglement witness if and only if $t=1$ and $π$ is cyclic.
Recently, X. Qi and J. Hou [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022334 (2012)] provided optimal entanglement witnesses without the spanning property. These witnesses are associated to indecomposable positive linear maps, but it is not checked whether partial transposes of these witnesses are also optimal. We show that partial transposes of these entanglement witnesses have spanning property, and these witnesses are indeed optimal PPTES witnesses (non-decomposable optimal entanglement witnesses).
A new class of entanglement witnesses (EWs) called reduction type entanglement witnesses is introduced, which can detect some multi-qudit entangeled states including PPT ones with Hilbert space of dimension $d_{_{1}}\otimes d_{_{2}}\otimes...\otimes d_{_{n}}$. The novelty of this work comes from the fact that the feasible regions turn out to be convex polygons, hence the manipulation of these EWs reduces to linear programming which can be solved \emph{exactly} by using simplex method. The decomposability and non-decomposability of these EWs are studied and it is shown that it has a close conne…
We address the problem of optimising entanglement witnesses when a limited fixed set of local measurements can be performed on a bipartite system, thus providing a procedure, feasible also for experiments, to detect entangled states using only the statistics of these local measurements. We completely characterize the class of entanglement witnesses of the form $W = P ^Γ$, where $Γ$ denotes partial transposition, that can be constructed from the measurements of the bipartite operators $σ_{x}\otimesσ_{x},$ $σ_{y}\otimesσ_{y}$ and $σ_{z}\otimesσ_{z}$ in the case of two-qubit systems. In particula…
We provide two 1-parameter families of indecomposable entanglement witnesses in C4 {\otimes} C4. Following recent paper by Ha and Kye [Phys. Rev. A 84, 024302 (2011)] we show that these EWs are optimal and hence provide the strongest tool in entanglement theory to discriminate between separable and entangled states. As a byproduct we show that these EWs detect quantum entanglement within a family of generalized Horodecki states.
One of the unsolved problems in the characterization of the optimal entanglement witnesses is the existence of optimal witnesses acting on bipartite Hilbert spaces H_{m,n}=C^m\otimes C^n such that the product vectors obeying <e,f|W|e,f>=0 do not span H_{m,n}. So far, the only known examples of such witnesses were found among indecomposable witnesses, one of them being the witness corresponding to the Choi map. However, it remains an open question whether decomposable witnesses exist without the property of spanning. Here we answer this question affirmatively, providing systematic examples of s…
We provide a new extension of entanglement witnesses for $\mathbb{C}^{d_{1}}\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_{2}}$ systems. Our construction preserves the properties of indecomposability and spanning property of entanglement witnesses. We show how our concept of extended entanglement witnesses is connected with the idea of measurement device independent entanglement witnesses.
Limits of nonlinear in quantum mechanics are studied. Impossibility of physical implementation of the transformation $\varrho^{\otimes n} \to \varrho^{n}$ in quantum mechanics is proved. For sake of further analysis the simplest notion of structural completely positive approximation (SCPA) and structural physical approximations (SPA) of unphysical map are introduced. Both always exist for linear hermitian maps and can be optimised under natural assumptions. However it is shown that some intuitively natural SPA of the nonlinear operation $\varrho^{\otimes 2} \to \varrho^{2}$ that was already pr…
The entanglement witness is an important and experimentally applicable tool for entanglement detection. In this paper, we provide a nonlinear improvement of any entanglement witness for $2\otimes d$ quantum systems. Compared with any existing entanglement witness, the improved separability criterion only needs two more measurements on local observables. Detailed examples are employed to illustrate the efficiency of the nonlinear improvement for general, optimal and non-decomposable entanglement witnesses.
A general formulation of the problem of detection for a pair of two cones is presented. The special case is the detection of entangled states by entanglement witnesses. Having defined what means "to detect", one can identify the subset of elements, which detect optimally. I will present the properties of this set for a general pair of cones. In particular, I prove the generalization of the theorem of Lewenstein, Krauss, Cirac, Horodecki. The entanglement witness $W$ is optimall if the set of product vectors $\{ϕ\otimes ψ: \langle ϕ\otimes ψ| W | ϕ\otimes ψ\rangle = 0\}$ spans the whole Hilbert…
Entanglement witnesses (EWs) constitute one of the most important entanglement detectors in quantum systems. Nevertheless, their complete characterization, in particular with respect to the notion of optimality, is still missing, even in the decomposable case. Here we show that for any qubit-qunit decomposable EW (DEW) W the three statements are equivalent: (i) the set of product vectors obeying \bra{e,f}W\ket{e,f}=0 spans the corresponding Hilbert space, (ii) W is optimal, (iii) W=Q^Γ with Q denoting a positive operator supported on a completely entangled subspace (CES) and Γstanding for the …
Quantum discord witnesses the nonclassicality of quantum states even when there is no entanglement in these quantum states. This type of quantum correlation also has some interesting and significant applications in quantum information processing. Quantum discord has been evaluated explicitly only for certain class of two-qubit states. We extend the previous studies to $2 \otimes d$ quantum systems and derive an analytical expression for quantum discord for a two-parameter class of states for $d \geq 3$. We compare quantum discord, classical correlation, and entanglement for qubit-qutrit system…
We construct optimal PPTES witnesses to detect $3\otimes 3$ PPT entangled edge states of type $(6,8)$ constructed recently \cite{kye_osaka}. To do this, we consider positive linear maps which are variants of the Choi type map involving complex numbers, and examine several notions related to optimality for those entanglement witnesses. Through the discussion, we suggest a method to check the optimality of entanglement witnesses without the spanning property.
We build apon our previous work, the Buckley-\vSivic method for simultaneous construction of families of positive maps on $3 \times 3$ self-adjoint matrices by prescribing a set of complex zeros to the associated forms. Positive maps that are not completely positive can be used to prove (witness) that certain mixed states are entangled. We obtain entanglement witnesses that are indecomposable and belong to extreme rays of the cone of positive maps. Consequently our semidefinite program returns new examples of entangled states whose entanglement cannot be certified by the transposition map nor …
Let $H^{[ N]}=H^{[ d_{1}]}\otimes ... \otimes H^{[ d_{n}]}$ be a tensor product of Hilbert spaces and let $τ_{0}$ be the closest separable state in the Hilbert-Schmidt norm to an entangled state $ρ_{0}$. Let $\tildeτ_{0}$ denote the closest separable state to $ρ_{0}$ along the line segment from $I/N$ to $ρ_{0}$ where $I$ is the identity matrix. Following [pitrubmat] a witness $W_{0}$ detecting the entanglement of $ρ_{0}$ can be constructed in terms of $I, τ_{0}$ and $\tildeτ_{0}$. If representations of $τ_{0}$ and $\tildeτ_{0}$ as convex combinations of separable projections are known, then th…
An entanglement witness (EW) is an operator that allows to detect entangled states. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such operators to be optimal, i.e. to detect entangled states in an optimal way. We show how to optimize general EW, and then we particularize our results to the non-decomposable ones; the latter are those that can detect positive partial transpose entangled states (PPTES). We also present a method to systematically construct and optimize this last class of operators based on the existence of ``edge'' PPTES, i.e. states that violate the range separability criterio…
We study extremal entanglement witnesses on a bipartite quantum system. We define the cone of witnesses as the dual of the set of separable density matrices, thus $\textrm{Tr}\,Ωρ\geq 0$ when $Ω$ is a witness and $ρ$ a pure product state, $ρ=ψψ^{\dagger}$ with $ψ=ϕ\otimesχ$. The set of witnesses of unit trace is a compact convex set, defined by its extremal points. The expectation value $f(ϕ,χ)=\mathrm{Tr}\,Ωρ$ as a function of $ϕ$ and $χ$ is a nonnegative biquadratic form. Every zero of $f(ϕ,χ)$ imposes real-linear constraints on $f$ and $Ω$. The Hessian matrix at the zero must be nonnegative…
Motivated by the separability problem in quantum systems $2\otimes4$, $3\otimes3$ and $2\otimes2\otimes2$, we study the maximal (proper) faces of the convex body, $S_1$, of normalized separable states in an arbitrary quantum system with finite-dimensional Hilbert space $H=H_1\otimes H_2\otimes\cdots\otimes H_n$. To any subspace $V$ of $H$ we associate a face $F_V$ of $S_1$ consisting of all states $ρ\in S_1$ whose range is contained in $V$. We prove that $F_V$ is a maximal face if and only if $V$ is a hyperplane. If $V$ is the hyperplane orthogonal to a product vector, we prove that $\dim F_V=…
In this paper, we study the separability of quantum states in bosonic system. Our main tool here is the "separability witnesses", and a connection between "separability witnesses" and a new kind of positivity of matrices--- "Power Positive Matrices" is drawn. Such connection is employed to demonstrate that multi-qubit quantum states with Dicke states being its eigenvectors is separable if and only if two related Hankel matrices are positive semidefinite. By employing this criterion, we are able to show that such state is separable if and only if it's partial transpose is non-negative, which co…
We introduce a property of a matrix-valued linear map $Φ$ that we call its "non-m-positive dimension" (or "non-mP dimension" for short), which measures how large a subspace can be if every quantum state supported on the subspace is non-positive under the action of $I_m \otimes Φ$. Equivalently, the non-mP dimension of $Φ$ tells us the maximal number of negative eigenvalues that the adjoint map $I_m \otimes Φ^*$ can produce from a positive semidefinite input. We explore the basic properties of this quantity and show that it can be thought of as a measure of how good $Φ$ is at detecting entangle…
The absolute separability problem asks for a characterization of the quantum states $ρ\in M_m\otimes M_n$ with the property that $UρU^\dagger$ is separable for all unitary matrices $U$. We investigate whether or not it is the case that $ρ$ is absolutely separable if and only if $UρU^\dagger$ has positive partial transpose for all unitary matrices $U$. In particular, we develop an easy-to-use method for showing that an entanglement witness or positive map is unable to detect entanglement in any such state, and we apply our method to many well-known separability criteria, including the range cri…

We analyze a class of entangled states for bipartite $d \otimes d$ systems, with $d$ non-prime. The entanglement of such states is revealed by the construction of canonically associated entanglement witnesses. The structure of the states is very simple and similar to the one of isotropic states: they are a mixture of a separable and a pure entangled state whose supports are orthogonal. Despite such simple structure, in an opportune interval of the mixing parameter their entanglement is not revealed by partial transposition nor by the realignment criterion, i.e. by any permutational criterion i…
