A complete analysis of proton recoil asymmetry in neutron decay in the first order of radiative and recoil corrections is presented. The possible contributions from new physics are calculated in terms of low energy coupling constants, and the sensitivity of the measured asymmetry to models beyond the Standard model are discussed.
The inverse $β$-decay reaction, anti-nu_e + p --> e^+ + n, for low-energy anti-neutrinos coming from nuclear reactors is of great current interest in connection with high-precision measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$. We have previously derived analytic expressions, up to next-to-leading order in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, for the radiative corrections (RCs) and the nucleon-recoil corrections both for this reaction and for the related neutron $β$-decay process. We investigate here the numerical consequences of these analytic expressions. We show that the recoil cor…
In this paper a scenario with the participation of the exotic scalar S, tensor T and pseudoscalar couplings of the right-handed neutrinos in addition to the standard vector V, axial A couplings of the left-handed neutrinos in the low-energy $(ν_μe^{-})$ and $(ν_{e}e^{-})$ scattering processes is considered. Neutrinos are assumed to be massive Dirac fermions and to be polarized. Both reactions are studied at the level of the four-fermion point interaction. The main goal is to show that the physical consequence of the presence of the right-handed neutrinos is an appearance of the azimuthal asymm…
We present a calculation of full one-loop radiative corrections, including the constant term, to the asymmetry parameter of polarised neutron beta decay. This gives the radiative correction to the axial coupling constant $g_A$ extracted from the beta asymmetry so that it ties to $g_A$ that appears in neutron decay lifetime in a consistent renormalisation scheme. We find that the ratio of axial-vector to vector couplings determined from the beta asymmetry, after taking account of the outer radiative correction, is related to the bare value as $G_A/G_V=1.0012 G_A^0/G_V^0$.
We analyse the proton recoil energy and angular distribution of the radiative beta-decay of the neutron to leading order in the large baryon mass expansion by taking into account the contributions of the proton-photon correlations. We show that the account for the proton-photon correlations does not contradict the description of the radiative corrections to the lifetime of the neutron and the proton recoil energy spectrum of the neutron beta-decay in terms of the functions (α/π) g_n(E_e) and (α/π) f_n(E_e), where E_e is the electron energy. In addition we find that the contributions of the pro…
Monoenergetic antineutrinos emitted in the bound state beta-decay of H can be resonantly captured in 3He. Favorable conditions are offered by tritide technology for ultra sharp recoilless resonant capture of the 18.6 keV nubare with sigma~5x10-32 cm2, 11 orders of magnitude larger than sigma(nubare +p). The gravitational red shift of neutrinos and the mixing angle theta13 may be measurable in bench scale baselines.
A simplified but very instructive analysis of the seesaw mechanism is here performed. Assuming a nearly diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we study the forms of the Majorana mass matrix of right-handed neutrinos, which reproduce the effective mass matrix of left-handed neutrinos. As a further step, the important effect of a non diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix is explored. The corresponding implications for the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and for the neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. We propose two distinct models where the baryon asymmetry is enhanced.
We calculate the contributions of weak magnetism and proton recoil of order O(E^2_e/m^2_N)~10^{-5}, i.e. to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion, to the neutron lifetime and correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay, where E_e and m_N are the electron energy and the nucleon mass, respectively. We analyze the electron-energy and angular distribution for the neutron beta decay with a polarized neutron, a polarized electron and an unpolarized proton. Together with Wilkinson's corrections (Nucl. Phys. A 377, 474 (1982) and radiative corrections of order O(alph…
The D0 collaboration has recently announced evidence for a dimuon CP asymmetry in B_{d,s} decays of order one percent. If confirmed, this asymmetry requires new physics. We argue that for minimally flavor violating (MFV) new physics, and at low tan beta=v_u/v_d, there are only two four-quark operators (Q_{2,3}) that can provide the required CP violating effect. The scale of such new physics must lie below 260 GeV sqrt{tan beta}. The effect is universal in the B_s and B_d systems, leading to S_{psi K}~sin(2beta)-0.15 and S_{psi phi}~0.25. The effects on epsilon_K and on electric dipole moments …
The proton asymmetry parameter C in neutron decay describes the correlation between neutron spin and proton momentum. In this Letter, the first measurement of this quantity is presented. The result C=-0.2377(26) agrees with the Standard Model expectation. The coefficient C provides an additional parameter for new and improved Standard Model tests. From a differential analysis of the same data (assuming the Standard Model), we obtain lambda=-1.275(16) as ratio of axial-vector and vector coupling constant.
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and in the tree--approximation we calculate the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay with one-real photon emission by taking into account the contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil to order 1/m_p of the large proton mass m_p expansion. We find that the obtained contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil increase the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay by about 0.70%. This is large compared with the contribution of the weak magnetism and proton recoil of about 0.16% to th…
We discuss the impact of the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay on the washout of lepton number in the early universe. Neutrinoless double beta decay can be triggered by a large number of mechanisms that can be encoded in terms of Standard Model effective operators which violate lepton number by two units. We calculate the contribution of such operators to the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay and correlate it with the washout of lepton number induced by the same operators in the early universe. We find that the observation of a non-standard contribution to neutrinoless double …
In this paper, we show how a presence of the exotic scalar, tensor weak interactions in addition to the standard vector-axial (V-A) one may help to distinguish the Dirac from Majorana neutrinos in the elastic scattering of (anti)neutrino beam off the unpolarized electrons in the limit of vanishing (anti)neutrino mass. We assume that the incoming (anti)neutrino beam comes from the polarized muon decay at rest and is the left-right chiral mixture with assigned direction of the transversal spin polarization with respect to the production plane. We display that the azimuthal asymmetry in the angul…
We probe the rare semileptonic decays $B_{(s)} \to K_2^*(1430)(f_2'(1525)) \ell^+\ell^-$ proceeding via $b\to s \ell \ell$ transition in the presence of a light $Z^{\prime}$ boson. We employ the presence of an additional vector type interaction and constrain the new physics coupling parameter using the existing experimental measurements on $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ observables. To understand the sensitivity of the new physics coupling, we investigate the impact of this coupling on various physical observables such as differential branching ratio, the forward-backward asymmetry, the lepton polarizati…
Perturbative corrections to b->c transitions at zero recoil are considered in the two-step matching scheme. The matching coefficient for the b->c currents from the intermediate effective theory (between the scales m_b and m_c) to the low-energy effective theory (scales below m_c) has been found with two-loop accuracy. The next-to-next-to-leading logarithms has been summed in the leading order in m_c/m_b. Higher-order corrections are estimated in the large-beta_0 limit.
The angular correlation of the electrons in the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu2β$) is calculated taking into account the nucleon recoil, the $S$ and $P$-waves for the electrons and the electron mass using a general Lorentz invariant effective Lagrangian. We show that the angular coefficient is essentially independent of the nuclear matrix element models. We work out the angular coefficient in several scenarios for new physics, in particular, in the left-right symmetric models.
We present the relativistic calculation of the beta-decay of tritium in a hadron model. The elementary particle treatment of the transition 3H -> 3He + e^- + nu_e is performed in analogy with the description of the beta-decay of neutron. The effects of higher order terms of hadron current and nuclear recoil are taken into account in this formalism. The relativistic Kurie function is derived and presented in a simple form suitable for the determination of neutrino masses from the shape of the endpoint spectrum. A connection with the commonly used Kurie function is established.
We treat 0+ -> 2+ neutrinoless double beta decays taking into account recoil corrections to the nuclear currents. The decay probability can be written as a quadratic form of the effective coupling constants of the right-handed leptonic currents and the effective neutrino mass. We calculate the nuclear matrix elements for the 0+ -> 2+ neutrinoless double beta decays of 76Ge and 100Mo, and demonstrate that the relative sensitivities of 0+ -> 2+ decays to the neutrino mass and the right-handed currents are comparable to those of 0+ -> 0+ decays.
We calculate the amplitude of the rare flavour-changing neutral-current decay $B\to π\ell^+\ell^-$ at large recoil of the pion. The nonlocal contributions in which the weak effective operators are combined with the electromagnetic lepton-pair emission are systematically taken into account. These amplitudes are calculated at off-shell values of the lepton-pair mass squared, $q^2<0$, employing the operator-product expansion, QCD factorization and light-cone sum rules. The results are fitted to hadronic dispersion relations in $q^2$, including the intermediate vector meson contributions. The disp…
Recently it has been shown that symmetries emerging in the heavy quark and large recoil energy limit impose various relations on form factors that parametrise the decay of B mesons into light mesons. These symmetries are broken by perturbative effects. In this paper we discuss the structure of heavy-to-light form factors including such effects and compute symmetry-breaking corrections to first order in the strong coupling. As an application of our results we consider the forward-backward asymmetry zero in the rare decay B -> V l^+ l^- and the possibility to constrain potential new physics cont…
The theoretical evaluation of major nuclear structure effects on the asymmetry of allowed Gamow-Teller beta-decay rates in light mirror nuclei is presented. The calculations are performed within the shell model, using empirical isospin-nonconserving interaction and realistic Woods-Saxon radial wave functions. The revised treatment of p-shell nuclei is supplemented by systematic calculations for sd-shell nuclei and compared to experimental asymmetries when available. The results are important in connection with the possible existence of second-class currents in the weak interaction.
If the baryon asymmetry in the present universe is generated by decays of the $L H_u$ flat direction, the observed baryon asymmetry requires the mass of the lightest neutrino to be much smaller than the mass scale indicated from the atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations. Such a small mass of the lightest neutrino leads to a high predictability on the rate of the neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay. In this letter we show general predictions on the $0νββ$ decay in the leptogenesis via the $LH_u$ flat direction.
In this talk we show that, unlike other pure $b\to d$ penguin processes, the decay $\bs(t)\toϕ\ks$ is dominated by a single amplitude, that of the internal $t$-quark. Thus, the indirect CP asymmetry in this decay probes $\sin 2β$. This cancellation holds for most part of the parameter space and error on $\sin 2β$ is less than 10%. By measuring the direct CP asymmetry, one can get a better idea of the probable error on $\sin 2β$.
We start from a Left-Right Symmetric Model and we analyze the beta decay of the free neutron $n\to p+e^{-}+\barν_{e}$. We applied this model to incorporate the right currents, whereby we propose an amplitude whose leptonic part contains the parameter $λ$ defined as left-right asymmetry parameter which measures the parity violation. The analysis consists of seeing how the spectrum of energy of the electrons, the total rate of decay, and the lifetime $τ$ of the neutron are affected by the left-right asymmetry parameter, besides taking into account corrections of mass, that is, $m_{e}\neq 0$, $m_…
The correlation coefficients a, A, and B in neutron beta-decay are proportional to the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling constants, g_A/g_V, to leading recoil order. With the advent of the next generation of neutron decay experiments, the recoil-order corrections to these expressions become experimentally accessible, admitting a plurality of Standard Model (SM) tests. The measurement of both a and A, e.g., allows one to test the conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis and to search for second-class currents (SCC) independently. The anticipated precision of these measurements …
We present a study of resonant leptogenesis in a radiative seesaw model. We consider the case where two quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos realize resonant leptogenesis, and the CP violation necessary to achieve leptogenesis occurs through the CP phases present in the neutrino mixing matrix. A numerical analysis is performed by taking the best-fit values from the current global data for three neutrino mixing angles and two mass-squared differences. We have shown how the predicted value of baryon asymmetry depends on the Dirac and Majorana CP phases. With the particular choice for the mass…
Associated with two TeV-scale leptoquark scalars, a dark matter fermion which is the neutral component of an isotriplet can mediate a testable neutrinoless double beta decay at one-loop level. The dark matter fermion with determined mass and spin-independent scattering can be verified by the future dark matter direct detection experiments. We also discuss the implications on neutrino masses and baryon asymmetry.
We present a low-scale type-I seesaw scenario with discrete flavor and CP symmetries. This scenario not only explains the measured values of the lepton mixing angles, but also makes predictions for leptonic CP violation, and connects the low-energy CP phases relevant for neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments with the high-energy CP phases relevant for leptogenesis. We show that the three right-handed Majorana neutrinos in this scenario have (almost) degenerate masses and their decays can explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via resonant leptogenes…
We analyze the forward-backward asymmetry of the decays B to (pi,K) l^+ l^- with l = mu or tau in the framework of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model. We find that, the asymmetry is enhanced at large tan beta and depends strongly on the sign of the mu parameter. For mu > 0, the asymmetry is typically large and observable whereas for mu < 0, it changes the sign and is suppressed by an order of magnitude. Including cosmological constraints we find that the asymmetry has a maximal value of about 30 %, produced when Higgs- and gauge- induced flavor violations are of comparable s…
We report a serious kinematics problem in the bremsstrahlung photon part of the order-$α$ outer (model independent) radiative correction calculations for those neutron (and nuclear beta) decay observables (like electron-neutrino correlation parameter measurement) where the proton (recoil particle) is detected. The so-called neutrino-type radiative correction calculations, which fix the neutrino direction in the bremsstrahlung photon integrals, use 3-body decay kinematics to connect the unobserved neutrino direction with the observed electron and proton (recoil particle) momenta. But the presen…
The symmetries arise due to heavy quark and large energy limit help us to reduce the number of independent form factors in the heavy-to-light $B$-meson decays. It is expected that these symmetry relations are not exact and are broken by the perturbative effects, namely, the vertex corrections and the hard-spectator scatterings. The former are included in the form factors via vertex renormalization whereas the later are calculated through light-cone distribution amplitudes. We first calculate these symmetry breaking corrections to the form factors involved in semileptonic $B$-meson to an axial-…
We discuss two dedicated observables in exclusive B -> K* l+ l- decay that can be used to study effects of physics beyond the standard model, namely the forward-backward asymmetry in the lepton spectrum and the isospin-asymmetry between decays of charged and neutral B mesons. We consider the region of large recoil-energy (i.e. small invariant mass of the lepton pair), and employ the QCD factorization approach to exclusive B meson decays. Sub-leading effects in the heavy quark mass expansion have been taken into account for the calculation of the isospin-asymmetry. We give predictions for decay…
Because the Bd -> J/psi Ks asymmetry determines only sin(2 beta), a discrete ambiguity in the true value of beta remains. This note reviews how the ambiguity can be removed. Extractions of the CKM angle alpha are discussed next. Some of the methods require very large data samples and will not be feasible in the near future. In the near future, semi-inclusive CP-violating searches could be undertaken, which are reviewed last.
Neglecting smaller amplitudes the time-dependent CP asymmetry in penguin-dominated b -> s q \bar q transitions (such as B -> phi K_S) is expected to equal sin(2 beta), an expectation not borne out by the present average experimental data. I compute and discuss the correction due to the smaller amplitudes in the framework of QCD factorization.
We study possible scalar type interactions in tau^- -->pi^- pi^0 nu_tau decay. One finds that an angular distribution asymmetry, A(s), can be induced from the interference between the scalar part and vector part amplitudes in this decay. Our analysis shows that, in the two-Higgs-doublet model of type II with large tan beta, the charged Higgs contribution could make A(s) up to 10^{-3} without conflict with present experimental constraints. Thus in the future precise experiments in tau-charm factories, this angular distribution asymmetry may be an interesting observable either to be helpful in s…
We present a measurement of the branching fraction and photon energy spectrum for the decay B --> X_s gamma using data from the BaBar experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 210 fb^{-1}, from which approximately 680 000 BB events are tagged by a fully reconstructed hadronic decay of one of the B mesons. In the decay of the second B meson, an isolated high--energy photon is identified. We measure BR(B --> X_s gamma) = (3.66 +- 0.85_{stat} +- 0.60_{syst}) x 10^{-4} for photon energies E_gamma above 1.9 GeV in the B rest frame. From the measured spectrum we calculat…
Recently, the Babar and Belle collaborations have reported their first measurements of the CP-violating asymmetry in Bd --> psi KS, and more precise results will follow soon. We discuss what a future evidence for small sin(2 beta) could mean, contrasting the usual possibility of new physics in the Bd system, with the interesting alternative that the new physics effects are confined to the kaon system.
We elaborate on the dichotomy between the description of the semileptonic decays of heavy hadrons on the one hand and the semileptonic decays of light hadrons such as neutron $β$ decays on the other hand. For example, almost without exception the semileptonic decays of heavy baryons are described in cascade fashion as a sequence of two two-body decays $B_1 \to B_2 + W_{\rm off-shell}$ and $W_{\rm off-shell} \to \ell + ν_\ell$ whereas neutron $β$ decays are analyzed as true three-body decays $n \to p + e^- +\bar ν_e$. Within the cascade approach it is possible to define a set of seven angular o…
The matrix element \Vud of the CKM matrix can be determined by two independent measurements in neutron decay: the neutron lifetime $τ_n$ and the ratio of coupling constants $λ=g_A/g_V$, which is most precisely determined by measurements of the beta asymmetry angular correlation coefficient~$A$. We present recent progress on the determination of these coupling constants.
Both neutrinoless double beta decay and leptogenesis require neutrinos to be Majorana fermions. A relation between these two phenomena can be derived once the mechanism of neutrino mass generation is specified. We first derive the constraints on the Majorana phases by minimising the effective neutrino mass in neutrinoless double beta decay with respect to the smallest mass among the light neutrinos. Given these phases, we derive a lower bound on $M_{1}$ (the mass of the lightest of the heavy neutrinos) in the framework of Type-I seesaw mechanism, subject to the constraint that the CP asymmetry…
The relativistic theory of the inverse beta-decay of polarized neutron, $ν_{e} + n \to p + e ^{-}$, in strong magnetic field is developed. For the proton wave function we use the exact solution of the Dirac equation in the magnetic filed that enables us to account exactly for effects of the proton momentum quantization in the magnetic field and also for the proton recoil motion. The effect of nucleons anomalous magnetic moments in strong magnetic fields is also discussed. We examine the cross section for different energies and directions of propagation of the initial neutrino accounting for ne…
The GENIUS proposal is described and some of it's physics potential is outlined. Also in the light of the contradictive results from the DAMA and CDMS experiments the Genius TF, a new experimental setup is proposed. The Genius TF could probe the DAMA evidence region using the WIMP nucleus recoil signal and WIMP annual modulation signature simultaneously. Besides that it can prove the long term feasibility of the detector technique to be implemented into the GENIUS setup and will in this sense be a first step towards the realization of the GENIUS experiment.
We discuss the relation between lepton number violation at high and low energies, particularly, the constraints on baryogenesis models, which would be implied by an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay. The primordial baryon asymmetry can be washed out by effective lepton number violating operators triggering neutrinoless double beta decay in combination with sphaleron processes. A generic conclusion is that popular models of baryogenesis are excluded if a non-standard mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay, i.e., other than the standard light neutrino exchange, is observed. Apar…
We study the corrections to the determination of sin(2 beta) from the time dependent CP asymmetry of B^0 to J/Psi K_S which arise in the standard model. Although a precise prediction of these corrections is not possible we find that they are indeed extremely small, of the order of less than a per mil of the observed value. This means in turn that any deviation visible at the B factories will be a clear signal for new physics.
Radiative corrections to the lifetime and angular correlation coefficients of neutron beta-decay are evaluated in effecitive field theory. We also evaluate the lowest order nucleon recoil corrections, including weak-magnetism. Our results agree with those of the long-range and model-independent part of previous calculations. In an effective theory the model-dependent radiative corrections are replaced by well-defined low-energy constants. The effective field theory allows a systematic evaluation of higher order corrections to our results to the extent that the relevant low-energy constants are…
We consider the chargino contribution to the CP violation in B \to ϕK_S decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model at large \tanβ. It is shown that the Wilson coefficient C_{8g} of the chromomagnetic penguin operator can be significantly enhanced by the chargino-mediated diagrams while satisfying other direct/indirect experimental constraints. The enhanced C_{8g} allows large deviation in the CP asymmetry from the standard model prediction.
Due to a directional asymmetry of neutrino emission caused by parity violation, a sample of radioactive atoms experiences a small recoil force from neutrino radiation accompanying electron capture by polarized nuclei. An expression for this force is obtained for the case of allowed nuclear transitions. Prospects to measure this force by the use of modern micromechanical devices are considered. Numerical estimates for the force are presented for a number of most suitable radioactive isotopes. Potential applications for the weak interaction studies are discussed including the possibility to sear…
In our recent work we identify the hybrid textures of neutrino mass matrix which simultaneously account for dark matter (DM) and neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$). We also obtained the bounds on dark matter mass and effective Majorana mass $|M_{ee}|$. In this work we look for those hybrid textures which altogether accounts for DM, $0νββ$ and leptogenesis. We have found correlation of baryon asymmetry of universe $Y$ with dark matter mass $M_1$ and effective Majorana mass $|M_{ee}|$. We use experimental bounds on relic density of dark matter ($Ωh^2$) and baryon asymmetry of universe to id…
Interactions that manifest themselves as lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions typically erase any preexisting baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this article, we discuss the constraints obtained from an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay in this context. If a new physics mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay other than the standard light neutrino exchange is observed, typical scenarios of high-scale baryogenesis will be excluded unless the baryon asymmetry is stabilized via some new mechanism. We also sketch how this con…
We discuss, in detail, the K* polarization states in the exclusive B meson decay B0-> K*0(-> K-pi+)l^+l^- (l=e, μ, τ) in the low dilepton mass region. We focus on the study of the angular distribution of this decay that provides valuable information on the K* spin amplitudes A_perp, A_par, A0. This can give us a handle on non-standard interactions that cannot be proved through measurements of the branching ratio and lepton forward-backward asymmetry. We explore the transverse asymmetries A_T^1(s), A_T^2(s), K* polarization parameter α_{K*}(s), the fraction of K* polarization F_L(s) and F_T(s) …
Coherent QCD radiation in the hadroproduction of top quark pairs leads to a forward--backward asymmetry that grows more negative with increasing transverse momentum of the pair. This feature is present in Monte Carlo event generators with coherent parton showering, even though the production process is treated at leading order and has no intrinsic asymmetry before showering. In addition, depending on the treatment of recoils, showering can produce a positive contribution to the inclusive asymmetry. We explain the origin of these features, compare them in fixed-order calculations and the Herwig…
The constraints on baryogenesis models obtained from an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay are discussed. The lepton number violating processes, which can underlie neutrinoless double beta decay, would together with sphaleron processes, which are effective in a wide range of energies, wash out any primordial baryon asymmetry of the universe. Typically, if a mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay other than the standard light neutrino exchange is observed, typical scenarios of high-scale baryogenesis will be excluded. This can be achieved by different methods, e.g. through the o…
We investigate a resonant leptogenesis scenario by quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos which have TeV-scale masses. Especially, we consider the case when two right-handed neutrinos are responsible to leptogenesis and the seesaw mechanism for active neutrino masses, and assume that the CP violation occurs only in the mixing matrix of active neutrinos. In this case the sign of the baryon asymmetry depends on the Dirac and Majorana CP phases as well as the mixing angle of the right-handed neutrinos. It is shown how the yield of the baryon asymmetry correlates with these parameters. In additio…
The time evolution of a neutrino is dependent on its initial properties at creation including flavor, energy, and wavepacket size. There exists no solid theoretical prediction for the latter property in the context of nuclear beta decay, despite the importance of this process for the past, present, and future of neutrino experimentation. In this paper, we provide a quantitative prediction for the size of a beta-decay-induced electron antineutrino wavepacket by treating the parent nucleus decaying to an entangled antineutrino-recoil system using the formalism of open quantum systems. Of central…
A natural explanation for the smallness of the neutrino mass requires them to be Majorana particles violating lepton number by two units. Since lepton number violation can have several interesting consequences in particle physics and cosmology, it is of utmost importance to find out if there is lepton number violation in nature and what is its magnitude. The neutrinoless double beta decay experiment can answer these questions: if there is lepton number violation and if neutrinos are Majorana particles. In addition, the magnitude of neutrinoless double beta decay will constrain any other lepton…
Past and current direct neutrino mass experiments set limits on the so-called effective neutrino mass, which is an incoherent sum of neutrino masses and lepton mixing matrix elements. The electron energy spectrum which neglects the relativistic and nuclear recoil effects is often assumed. Alternative definitions of effective masses exist, and an exact relativistic spectrum is calculable. We quantitatively compare the validity of those different approximations as function of energy resolution and exposure in view of tritium beta decays in the KATRIN, Project 8 and PTOLEMY experiments. Furthermo…
The charge-asymmetry observed in a recent CPLEAR experiment was interpreted by the authors as a direct observation of T-noninvariance. While this is the simplest and most natural inference, and the observed effect agrees in sign and magnitude with theoretical expectation, adherents of T-invariance may argue that other interpretations are also possible. If K^0 and \bar{K}^0 are produced equally in \bar{p} p annihilation, and T-invariance is assumed to hold, the asymmetry observed in CPLEAR must be attributed to TCP-noninvariance of kaon beta-decays. If that were the case, the charge-asymmetry i…
