Interactions that manifest themselves as lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions typically erase any preexisting baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this article, we discuss the constraints obtained from an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay in this context. If a new physics mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay other than the standard light neutrino exchange is observed, typical scenarios of high-scale baryogenesis will be excluded unless the baryon asymmetry is stabilized via some new mechanism. We also sketch how this conclusion can be extended beyond the first lepton generation by incorporating lepton flavor violating processes.
We discuss the relation between lepton number violation at high and low energies, particularly, the constraints on baryogenesis models, which would be implied by an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay. The primordial baryon asymmetry can be washed out by effective lepton number violating operators triggering neutrinoless double beta decay in combination with sphaleron processes. A generic conclusion is that popular models of baryogenesis are excluded if a non-standard mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay, i.e., other than the standard light neutrino exchange, is observed. Apar…
The constraints on baryogenesis models obtained from an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay are discussed. The lepton number violating processes, which can underlie neutrinoless double beta decay, would together with sphaleron processes, which are effective in a wide range of energies, wash out any primordial baryon asymmetry of the universe. Typically, if a mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay other than the standard light neutrino exchange is observed, typical scenarios of high-scale baryogenesis will be excluded. This can be achieved by different methods, e.g. through the o…
Interactions that manifest themselves as lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions typically erase any pre-existing baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We demonstrate in a model independent approach that the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would impose a stringent constraint on mechanisms of high-scale baryogenesis, including leptogenesis scenarios. Further, we discuss the potential of the LHC to model independently exclude high-scale leptogenesis scenarios when observing lepton number violating processes. In combination with the ob…
We develop an $A_4 \times Z_4 \times Z_2$ symmetry extension of Standard Model under the minimal extended seesaw (MES) mechanism which successfully predicts neutrino masses and mixings patterns. This model breaks $μ-τ$ symmetry of neutrino mass matrix and explains leptonic mixing with non-zero $θ_{13}$. We study the phenomenological results of the keV-scale sterile neutrino as a dark matter candidate along with other phenomenologies such as neutrino oscillation observables, neutrinoless double beta decay, baryogenesis via leptogenesis, etc. Dirac CP-violating phase $δ_{CP}$ and two Majorana ph…
We review the potential to probe new physics with neutrinoless double beta decay $(A,Z) \to (A,Z+2) + 2 e^-$. Both the standard long-range light neutrino mechanism as well as short-range mechanisms mediated by heavy particles are discussed. We also stress aspects of the connection to lepton number violation at colliders and the implications for baryogenesis.
We consider an extension of the Standard Model by two right-handed neutrinos, especially with masses lighter than charged $K$ meson. This simple model can realize the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses and also the baryogenesis by flavor oscillations of right-handed neutrinos. We summarize the constraints on right-handed neutrinos from direct searches as well as the big bang nucleosynthesis. It is then found that the possible range for the quasi-degenerate mass of right-handed neutrinos is $M_N \geq 163 \MeV$ for normal hierarchy of neutrino masses, while $M_N = 188 \text{--} 269 \MeV$ and $…
A simplified but very instructive analysis of the seesaw mechanism is here performed. Assuming a nearly diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we study the forms of the Majorana mass matrix of right-handed neutrinos, which reproduce the effective mass matrix of left-handed neutrinos. As a further step, the important effect of a non diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix is explored. The corresponding implications for the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and for the neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. We propose two distinct models where the baryon asymmetry is enhanced.
We revisit the production of baryon asymmetries in the minimal type I seesaw model with heavy Majorana singlets in the GeV range. We include "washout" effects from scattering processes with gauge bosons, higgs decays and inverse decays, besides the dominant top scatterings. We show that in the minimal model with two singlets, and for an inverted light neutrino ordering, future measurements from SHiP and neutrinoless double beta decay could in principle provide sufficient information to predict the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe.
By requiring the lower limit for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass, obtained in the baryogenesis from leptogenesis scenario, and a Dirac neutrino mass matrix similar to the up-quark mass matrix we predict small values for the $ν_e$ mass and for the matrix element $m_{ee}$ responsible of the neutrinoless double beta decay, $m_{ν_e}$ around $5\cdot10^{-3}$ eV and $m_{ee}$ smaller than $ 10^{-3}$ eV, respectively. The allowed range for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino is centered around the value of the scale of B - L breaking in the SO(10) gauge theory with Pati-Salam interme…

We consider the neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay in the so-called $ν$MSM, in which three right-handed neutrinos with masses below the electroweak scale are additionally introduced to the Standard Model. In this model there appear three heavy neutral leptons $N_1$, $N_2$, and $N_3$ corresponding to right-handed neutrinos. It has been known that the lightest one $N_1$ with keV mass, which is a candidate for dark matter, gives a negligible contribution to the $0 νββ$ decay. By contrast, the heavier ones $N_2$ and $N_3$, which are responsible to the seesaw mechanism of neutrino masses and b…
We discuss the impact of the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay on the washout of lepton number in the early universe. Neutrinoless double beta decay can be triggered by a large number of mechanisms that can be encoded in terms of Standard Model effective operators which violate lepton number by two units. We calculate the contribution of such operators to the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay and correlate it with the washout of lepton number induced by the same operators in the early universe. We find that the observation of a non-standard contribution to neutrinoless double …
We study a scenario in which the baryon asymmetry of the universe arises from a cosmological phase transition where lepton-number is spontaneously broken. If the phase transition is first order, a lepton-number asymmetry can arise at the bubble wall, through dynamics similar to electroweak baryogenesis, but involving right-handed neutrinos. In addition to the usual neutrinoless double beta decay in nuclear experiments, the model may be probed through a variety of "baryogenesis by-products," which include a stochastic background of gravitational waves created by the colliding bubbles. Depending…
The extension of the Standard Model by right handed neutrinos with masses in the GeV range can simultaneously explain the observed neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism and the baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. It has previously been claimed that the requirement for successful baryogenesis implies that the rate of neutrinoless double $β$ decay in this scenario is always smaller than the standard prediction from light neutrino exchange alone. In contrast, we find that the rate for this process can also be enhanced due to a dominant contribution from heavy neutrino exchange. …
We discuss the impact of fermion mass matrices on some lepton number violating processes, namely baryogenesis via leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay, and on some lepton flavor violating processes, namely radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric seesaw models.
In this work, we studied baryogenesis via leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) in the framework of LRSM where type I and type II seesaw terms arises naturally. The type I seesaw mass term is considered to be favouring $μ-τ$ symmetry, taking into account the widely studied realizations of $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass models, viz. Tribimaximal Mixing (TBM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM) respectively. The required correction to generate a non vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is obtained from the perturbation matrix, type II seesaw mass term in our case…
We did a model independent phenomenological study of baryogenesis via leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) and charged lepton flavour violation (CLFV) in a generic left-right symmetric model (LRSM) where neutrino mass originates from the type I + type II seesaw mechanism. We studied the new physics contributions to NDBD coming from the left-right gauge boson mixing and the heavy neutrino contribution within the framework of LRSM. We have considered the mass of the RH gauge boson to be specifically 5 TeV, 10 TeV and 18 TeV and studied the effects of the new physics contributions …
Neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating collider processes and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) are intimately related. In particular lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions will typically erase any pre-existing baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this contribution we briefly review the tight connection between neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating processes at the LHC and constraints from successful baryogenesis. We argue that far-reaching conclusions can be drawn unless the baryon asymmetry is st…
By inverting the seesaw formula we determine the heavy neutrino mass matrix. The impact on the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and the radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric models is described. Links to neutrinoless double beta decay are also briefly discussed. The analysis leads to two distinct matrix models. One has small mixings while the other has one maximal mixing. Both cannot give a sufficient amount of baryon asymmetry. Then we also comment on a different form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix, which does provide sufficient baryon asymmetry. In a supersymmetric scenario the branching…
In this report we discuss the main theories to understand the origin of baryon and lepton number violation in physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the theoretical predictions for rare processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, proton decay, and neutron-antineutron oscillation, and overview the prospects to discover these rare processes in the near future. The possibility to observe baryon and lepton violating signatures at current and future colliders and through precision studies of other rare processes, and the testability of different baryogenesis mechanisms is discussed in …
A detailed analytic and numerical study of baryogenesis through leptogenesis is performed in the framework of the standard model of electroweak interactions extended by the addition of three right-handed neutrinos, leading to the seesaw mechanism. We analyze the connection between GUT-motivated relations for the quark and lepton mass matrices and the possibility of obtaining a viable leptogenesis scenario. In particular, we analyze whether the constraints imposed by SO(10) GUTs can be compatible with all the available solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino data and, simultaneously, be capable…

We present a review of neutrino phenomenology in the minimal seesaw model (MSM), an economical and intriguing extension of the Standard Model with only two heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Given current neutrino oscillation data, the MSM can predict the neutrino mass spectrum and constrain the effective masses of the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta decay. We outline five distinct schemes to parameterize the neutrino Yukawa-coupling matrix of the MSM. The lepton flavor mixing and baryogenesis via leptogenesis are investigated in some detail by taking account of possibl…
The origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry apparently obligates the laws of physics to include some mechanism of baryon number ($\mathcal{B}$) violation. Searches for interactions violating $\mathcal{B}$ and baryon-minus-lepton number $\mathcal{(B-L)}$ represent a rich and underutilized opportunity. These are complementary to the existing, broad program of searches for $\mathcal{L}$-violating modes such as neutrinoless double $β$-decay which could provide deeper understandings of the plausibility of leptogenesis, or $\mathcal{B}$-violating, $\mathcal{(B-L)}$-conserving processes such as pro…
