We show the first lattice QCD results on the axial charge $g_A^{N^*N^*}$ of $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$. The measurements are performed with two flavors of dynamical quarks employing the renormalization-group improved gauge action at $β$=1.95 and the mean-field improved clover quark action with the hopping parameters, $κ$=0.1375, 0.1390 and 0.1400. In order to properly separate signals of $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$, we construct 2$\times$2 correlation matrices and diagonalize them. Wraparound contributions in the correlator, which can be another source of signal contaminations, are eliminated by imposing the Dirichlet boundary condition in the temporal direction. We find that the axial charge of $N^*(1535)$ takes small values as $g_A^{N^*N^*}\sim {\mathcal O}(0.1)$, whereas that of $N^*(1650)$ is about 0.5, which is found independent of quark masses and consistent with the predictions by the naive nonrelativistic quark model.
We present a combined analysis of SESAM and TxL data for the flavor singlet axial coupling G_A^1 of the proton, which is very helpful to stabilize the disconnected signals at small quark masses. From connected and disconnected contributions we use the tadpole improved renormalization constant Z_A and obtain G_A^1=0.21(12).
The flavor singlet axial and tensor charges of the nucleon are calculated in lattice QCD. We find $ΔΣ=Δu+Δd+Δs=+0.638(54)-0.347(46)-0.109(30) = +0.18(10)$ for the axial charge and $δΣ=δu+δd+δs=+0.839(60)-0.231(55)-0.046(34) = +0.562(88)$ for the tensor charge. The result for the axial charge shows reasonable agreement with the experiment and that for the tensor charge is the first prediction from lattice QCD before experimental measurements.
We perform a non-perturbative determination of the improvement coefficient c_A to remove O(a) discretization errors in the axial vector current in three-flavor lattice QCD with the Iwasaki gauge action and the standard O$(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. An improvement condition with a good sensitivity to c_A is imposed at constant physics. Combining our results with the perturbative expansion, c_A is now known rather precisely for 1/a \gtrsim 1.6 GeV.
We present results on the isoscalar form factors including the disconnected contributions, as well as on the strange and charm quark form factors. Using previous results on the isovector form factors, we determine the flavor decomposition of the nucleon axial form factors. These are computed using an ensemble of $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions simulated with physical values of quark masses. We investigate the SU(3) flavor symmetry and show that there is up to 10\% breaking for the axial and up to 50\% for the induced pseudoscalar form factors. By fitting the $Q^2$-dependence, we determined t…
We correct the values of the dominant nucleon to Delta axial transition form factors CA_5 and CA_6 published in C. Alexandrou et.al., Phys. Rev. D 76,094511 (2007). The analysis error affects only the values obtained when using the hybrid action in the low Q^2 regime bringing them into agreement with those obtained with Wilson fermions.
We investigate the axial $U(1)_A$ symmetry breaking above the critical temperature in two-flavor lattice QCD. The ensembles are generated with dynamical Möbius domain-wall or reweighted overlap fermions. The $U(1)_A$ susceptibility is extracted from the low-modes spectrum of the overlap Dirac eigenvalues. We show the quark mass and temperature dependences of $U(1)_A$ susceptibility. Our results at $T=220 \, \mathrm{MeV}$ imply that the $U(1)_A$ symmetry is restored in the chiral limit. Its coincidence with vanishing topological susceptibility is observed.
We present the results of a full QCD lattice calculation of the flavor singlet axial vector coupling $G_A^1$ of the proton. The simulation has been carried out on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at $β=5.6$ with $n_f=2$ dynamical Wilson fermions. It turns out that the statistical quality of the connected contribution to $G_A^1$ is excellent, whereas the disconnected part is accessible but suffers from large statistical fluctuations. Using a 1st order tadpole improved renormalization constant $Z_A$, we estimate $G_A^1 = 0.20(12)$.
We use two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to investigate the isovector axial charges of the spin one-half hyperons. Expressions for these hyperon axial charges are derived at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We utilize phenomenological and lattice QCD inputs to assess the convergence of the two-flavor theory, which appears to be best for cascades.
This paper develops in detail a lattice definition of QCD based on the chiral defect fermions recently introduced by Kaplan. The revised version provides missing technical details in the proof that non-singlet axial symmetries become exact in the limit of an infinite fifth dimension. Also several minor errors are corrected.
We calculate one-loop correction to the axial Ward-Takahashi identity given by Furman and Shamir in domain-wall QCD. It is shown perturbatively that the renormalized axial Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied without fine tuning and the ``conserved'' axial current receives no renormalization, giving $Z_A=1$. This fact will simplify the calculation of the pion decay constant in numerical simulations since the decay constant defined by this current needs no lattice renormalization factor.
Using quenched and unquenched chiral perturbation theory we compute vector and axial current two-point functions at finite volume and fixed gauge field topology, in the so-called ε-regime of QCD. A comparison of these results with finite volume lattice calculations allows to determine the parameters of the corresponding chiral Lagrangians.
In this work, we report the first lattice calculation of hyperon axial couplings, using the 2+1-flavor MILC configurations and domain-wall fermion valence quarks. Both the $Σ$ and $Ξ$ axial couplings are computed for the first time in lattice QCD. In particular we find that $g_{ΣΣ} = 0.450(21)_{\rm stat}(27)_{\rm syst}$ and $g_{ΞΞ} = -0.277(15)_{\rm stat}(19)_{\rm syst}$.
Protons and neutrons have a rich structure in terms of their constituents, the quarks and gluons. Understanding this structure requires solving Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However QCD is extremely complicated, so we must numerically solve the equations of QCD using a method known as lattice QCD. Here we describe a typical lattice QCD calculation by examining our recent computation of the nucleon axial charge.
We calculate one-loop correction to the axial charges of the octet baryons using quenched chiral perturbation theory, in order to understand chiral behavior of the axial charges in quenched approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In contrast to regular behavior of the full QCD chiral perturbation theory result, $c_0+c_{l2}m_π^2\,\ln{m_π^2}+\cdots$, we find that the quenched chiral perturbation theory result, $c_0^Q+(c_{l0}^Q+c_{l2}^Qm_π^2)\ln{m_π^2}+c_2^Q m_π^2+\cdots$, is singular in the chiral limit.
We prove that lattice QCD generates the axial anomaly in the continuum limit under very general conditions on the lattice action, which includes the case of Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. The ingredients going into the proof are gauge invariance, locality of the Dirac operator, absence of fermion doubling, the general form of the lattice Ward identity, and the power counting theorem of Reisz. The results generalize in an obvious way to SU(N) lattice gauge theories.
We show the first lattice QCD results on the axial charges $g_A^{N^*N^*}$ of $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$. We construct 2$\times$2 correlation matrices and diagonalize them so that the signals of $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$ are properly separated. Wraparound contributions in the correlator, which can be another source of signal contaminations, are elimi…
The region of the Columbia plot with two light quark flavors is not yet conclusively understood. Non-perturbative effects, e.g. the magnitude of the anomalous U(1) axial symmetry breaking, decides on the nature of the phase transition in this region. We report on our study of this region of the Columbia plot using lattice techniques. We use gauge field ensembles generated within the Highly Improved Staggered Quark discretization scheme, with the strange quark mass fixed at its physical value and the light quark mass varied such that $m_l=m_s/27$ and $m_s/40$, where $m_l=m_s/27$ corresponds to …
The conservation of the isovector axial current in lattice QCD with massless Wilson quarks is studied to one-loop order of perturbation theory. Following a strategy described in a previous publication, the O($a$) counterterm required for on-shell improvement of the current is computed. We also confirm an earlier result of Wohlert for the coefficient in front of the SW term in the improved action.
We evaluate the strangeness-conserving $N N$, $ΣΣ$, $ΞΞ$, $ΛΣ$ and the strangeness-changing $ΛN$, $ΣN$, $ΛΞ$, $ΣΞ$ axial charges in lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks and extend our previous work on pseudoscalar-meson-octet-baryon coupling constants so as to include $πΞΞ$, $KΛΞ$ and $KΣΞ$ coupling constants. We find that the axial charges have rather weak quark-mass dependence and the breaking in SU(3)-flavor symmetry is small at each quark-mass point we consider.
A finite-size technique is employed to compute the normalization constant $Z_A$ of the isovector axial current in lattice QCD. The calculation is carried out in the quenched approximation for values of the bare gauge coupling $g_0$ ranging from 0 to 1. In the lattice action and the lattice expression for the axial current we include the counterterms required for O(a) improvement, with non-perturbatively determined coefficients. With little additional work the normalization constant $Z_V$ of the improved isospin current is also obtained.
The axial-vector form factors and axial-vector constants of the baryon decuplet are investigated within a pion mean-field approach, which is also known as the chiral quark-soliton model. Given an axial-vector current with a specified flavor, there are four different form factors of a decuplet baryon. When we consider the singlet, triplet, and octet axial-vector currents, we have twelve different form factors for each member of the baryon decuplet. We compute all these axial-vector form factors of the baryon decuplet, taking into account the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and effects of flavor …
We discuss the QCD critical point at finite density through the study of many flavor QCD, in which two light flavors and Nf massive flavors exist. Performing simulations of QCD with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions, we calculate probability distribution functions of many flavor QCD at finite temperature and density. The dynamical effects of massive flavors and the chemical potential are added using the reweighting technique. From the shape of the distribution functions, we determine the critical surface separating the first order transition and crossover regions in the parameter space o…
The potential importance of short-distance nuclear effects in double-$β$ decay is assessed using a lattice QCD calculation of the $nn\rightarrow pp$ transition and effective field theory methods. At the unphysical quark masses used in the numerical computation, these effects, encoded in the isotensor axial polarisability, are found to be of similar magnitude to the nuclear modification of the single axial current, which phenomenologically is the quenching of the axial charge used in nuclear many-body calculations. This finding suggests that nuclear models for neutrinoful and neutrinoless doubl…
We perform lattice numerical simulations to study the phase transition of QCD at finite temperature to clarify the nature of the transition of massless two flavor QCD. We investigate QCD with two light and Nf heavy quarks instead of two-flavor QCD, and focus on the light quark mass dependence of the critical heavy mass, below which the transition is of first order. The heavy quarks are incorporated into two flavor configurations in the form of the hopping parameter expansion through the reweighting technique. The nature of the transition is identified by the shape of the constraint effective p…
We compute the flavor singlet meson correlators and screening masses in quenched and $N_f=2$ QCD at $N_t=8$. The consequences of our results for the realization of the $U_A(1)$ symmetry at finite T are discussed and an interpretation of our measurements in terms of the behaviour of the low lying fermionic modes is proposed.
We discuss the flavor dependence of the pressure and critical temperature calculated in QCD with 2, 2+1 and 3 flavors using improved gauge and staggered fermion actions on lattices with temporal extent Nt=4. For T > 2 Tc we find that bulk thermodynamics of QCD with 2 light and a heavier strange quark is well described by 3-flavor QCD while the transition temperature is closer to that of 2-flavor QCD. Furthermore, we present evidence that the chiral critical point of 3-flavor QCD, i.e. the second order endpoint of the line of first order chiral phase transitions, belongs to the universality cla…
We present the results from full QCD simulations with four flavors of light stag gered dynamical quarks on {\it {\it QCDSP}} supercomputer. Previous results are reproduced and the simulation reported here yields new results consistent with o ur previous runs. The hadron spectrum obtained with Wilson valence fermions reported here will allow us to determine if our earlier conclusions are independent of lattice form alism.
The axial $U(1)$ symmetry in the high-temperature phase is investigated with $N_f = 2$ lattice QCD simulations. The gauge ensembles are generated with Möbius domain-wall fermions, and the overlap/domain-wall reweighting is applied. We find that the $U(1)_A$ susceptibility evaluated from the spectrum of overlap-Dirac eigenvalues is strongly suppressed in the chiral limit. We also study its volume dependence.
We discuss the weak coupling expansion of massless QCD with the Dirac operator which is derived by Neuberger based on the overlap formalism and satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. The axial U(1) anomaly associated to the chiral transformation proposed by Luscher is calculated as an application and is shown to have the correct form of the topological charge density for perturbative backgrounds. The coefficient of the anomaly is evaluated as a winding number related to a certain five-dimensional fermion propagator.
With twisted boundary conditions on the quark fields, we study nucleon matrix elements of the axial current utilizing twisted heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. One can explore the momentum transfer dependence of the axial form factors more easily than by using ordinary lattice quantized momenta alone. As examples, we derive expressions for the nucleon axial radius and pseudoscalar form factor.
Renormalization constants of vector ($Z_V$) and axial-vector ($Z_A$) currents are determined non-perturbatively in quenched QCD for an RG-improved gauge action and a tadpole-improved clover quark action using the Schrödinger functional method. Meson decay constants $f_ρ$ and $f_π$ show much better scaling when $Z_V$ and $Z_A$ estimated for infinite physical volume are used instead of $Z$-factors from tadpole-improved one-loop perturbation theory.
This note is based on our recent results on QCD with varying number of flavors of fundamental fermions. Topics include unusual, strong dynamics in the preconformal, confining phase, the physics of the conformal window and the role of ab-initio lattice simulations in establishing our current knowledge of the phases of many flavor QCD
To study continuum limit of lattice QCD with many light quark flavors, we investigate the zero temperature phase structures of multi-flavor QCD. Currently a series of exploratory simulations are being performed with the number of quark flavors, $N_f $= 6, 8, and 10 on a set of lattice volumes for various quark masses. Here, we report on the current status of our simulation on a $8^4$ lattice.
I review the recent status of heavy flavor physics results from lattice QCD. In particular, I focus on the heavy-light decay constants, the bag parameters, the form factors, and the bottom quark mass. New progresses in theoretical methods are also reviewed.
Using the axial-vector coupling and the electromagnetic form factors of the D and D* mesons in 2+1 flavor Lattice QCD, we compute the D*Dπ, DDρand D*D*ρcoupling constants, which play an important role in describing the charm hadron interactions in terms of meson-exchange models. We also extract the charge radii of D and D* mesons and determine the contributions of the light and charm quarks separately.
We discuss hybrid Monte Carlo algorithms for odd-flavor lattice QCD simulations. The algorithms include a polynomial approximation which enables us to simulate odd-flavor QCD in the framework of the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. In order to make the algorithms exact, the correction factor to the polynomial approximation is also included in an economical, stochastic way. We test the algorithms for $n_f=1$, 1+1 and 2+1 flavors and compare results with other algorithms.
We have calculated the step scaling function and the running coupling of QCD in the Schroedinger functional scheme with four flavors of O(a) improved Wilson quarks. Comparisons of our non-perturbative results with 2-loop and 3-loop perturbation theory as well as with non-perturbative data for only two flavors are made.
We calculate axial vector and vector form factors for the semileptonic decay Ds to phi using HISQ valence quarks on MILC ensembles with 2+1 flavours of asqtad sea quarks. Using twisted boundary conditions to tune the quarks' momenta, we compute form factors at q^2 = 0 on coarse lattices. We find V(0)=0.903(67), A_1(0)= 0.603(20), A_2(0)=0.401(80) and A_0(0)=0.686(17), which we compare to experimental data and previous quenched lattice QCD calculations.
The four N to $Δ$ axial transition form factors are evaluated using quenched QCD, using two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions and using domain wall valence fermions on three-flavor MILC configurations for pion masses down to 360 MeV. We provide a prediction for the parity violating asymmetry as a function of $Q^2$ and examine the validity of the non-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation.
$π$-$N$ $σ$ term and proton axial vector matrix elements are calculated including disconnected contributions with a variant wall source method using the Wilson quark action at $β=5.7$ in quenched QCD. For the $σ$ term, we find $σ_{disc}/σ_{conn}=2.35(46)$ and $σ=44(6)$MeV--60(9)MeV. The fraction of proton spin carried by quarks is $ΔΣ=Δ{u}+Δ{d}+Δ{s}=+0.638(54)-0.347(46)-0.109(30)= +0.18(10)$.
The domain wall fermion (DWF) method, with its almost perfectly preserved chiral symmetry on the lattice, makes the calculation of the nucleon axial charge particularly easy. By maintaining chiral symmetry and using the Ward-Takahashi (WT) identity, one has Z_A = Z_V and the bare lattice calculation yields the physical value without explicit renormalization. The DBW2 improved gauge action provides further enhancement of the symmetry and hence a more accurate WT identity at coarse lattice spacing. Taking advantage of these methods, we confirmed a significant volume dependence of the nucleon axi…
We present results on the nucleon axial and induced pseudo-scalar form factors using an ensemble of two degenerate twisted mass clover-improved fermions generated at the physical value of the pion mass. We evaluate the isovector and the isoscalar, as well as, the strange and the charm axial form factors. The disconnected contributions are evaluated using recently developed methods that include deflation of the lower eigenstates, allowing us to extract the isoscalar, strange and charm axial form factors. We find that the disconnected quark loop contributions are non-zero and particularly large …
The nucleon axial form factors -- axial $G_A$, induced pseudoscalar $\widetilde{G}_P$ and pseudoscalar $G_P$ -- have displayed large systematics in lattice QCD calculations. The major symptoms were the violation of the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) relation between the three form factors, and the underestimation of the induced pseudoscalar coupling $g_P^\ast$ and the axial charge radius $r_A$ compared to phenomenological estimates. The small $g_P^\ast$ was a consequence of the failure of the pion-pole dominance (PPD) hypothesis, especially at low $M_π^2$. The small charge radius $r_…
We present preliminary results of an ongoing lattice QCD computation of the spectrum of $D$ mesons and $D_s$ mesons and of charmonium using 2+1+1 flavors of twisted mass sea and valence quarks.
We present a calculation of magnetic moments for selected spin-1 mesons using the techniques of lattice QCD. This is carried out by introducing progressively small static magnetic field on the lattice and measuring the linear response of a hadron's mass shift. The calculations are done on $24^4$ quenched lattices using standard Wilson actions, with $β$=6.0 and pion mass down to 500 MeV. The results are compared to those from the form factor method where available.
We report on a non-perturbative computation of the renormalization factor Z_A of the axial vector current in three-flavour O(a) improved lattice QCD with Wilson quarks and tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and also recall our recent determination of the improvement coefficient c_A. Our normalization and improvement conditions are formulated at constant physics in a Schrödinger functional setup. The normalization condition exploits the full, massive axial Ward identity to reduce finite quark mass effects in the evaluation of Z_A and correlators with boundary wave functions to suppress e…
The CP-PACS and JLQCD Collaborations have been made systematic studies of lattice QCD carrying out both chiral and continuum extrapolations. Importance of dynamical quark effects has been clarified by a comparison of quenched QCD and two flavor full QCD simulations. In two flavor simulations, the dynamical effects of $u$ and $d$ quarks are taken into account, but the third quark $s$ is still treated in a quenched approximation. As the final step towards a fully realistic lattice simulation of QCD, two collaborations started a joint project of three flavor QCD, concentrating all big computers a…
We compare the performances of the exact one-flavor algorithm (EOFA) and the rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm (RHMC), for dynamical simulations of lattice QCD with domain-wall fermion.
We investigate the phase structure of (2+Nf)-flavor QCD, where two light flavors and Nf massive flavors exist, to discuss the feasibility of the electroweak baryogenesis in realistic technicolor scenario and to understand properties of finite density QCD. Because an appearance of a first order phase transition at finite temperature is a necessary condition for the baryogenesis, it is important to study the nature of finite temperature phase transition. Applying the reweighting method, the probability distribution function of the plaquette is calculated in the many-flavor QCD. Through the shape…
We present our progress report on 1+1+1 flavor QCD+QED simulation at the physical point. Calculations are carried out with 2+1 flavor QCD gauge configurations generated by the PACS-CS Collaboration. The dynamical QED effect and the up-down quark mass difference are incorporated by the reweighting technique. We also discuss some physics results.
We have studied the 3-flavor, finite temperature, QCD phase transition with staggred fermions on an $ N_t=4$ lattice. By studying a variety of quark masses we have located the critical point, $m_c$, where the first order 3-flavor transition ends as lying in the region $0.32 \le m_c \le 0.35$ in lattice units
It is well known that because of the axial anomaly in QCD, mesons with $J^P = 0^-$ are close to $SU(3)_{\mathrm{V}}$ eigenstates: the $eta^\prime(958)$ meson is largely a singlet, and the $η$ meson an octet. In contrast, states with $J^P = 1^-$ are flavor diagonal: \textit{e.g.}, the $ϕ(1020)$ is almost pure $\bar{s} s$. Using effective Lagrangians, we show how this generalizes to states with higher spin, assuming that they can be classified according to the unbroken chiral symmetry of $G_{\mathrm{fl}} = SU(3)_{\mathrm{L}} \times SU(3)_{\mathrm{R}}$. We construct effective Lagrangians from ter…
We investigate the axial-vector transition form factors of the baryon octet to the baryon decuplet within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model, with the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking included. We consider the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and regard the strange current quark mass as a perturbation. We compare the present results for the $Δ\to N$ axial-vector transition with those from other models and lattice QCD. We also compute all possible axial-vector transitions from the baryon decuplet to the octet with the strangeness changed, i.e., $|ΔS|=1$. We obtain the value …
We discuss the fate of the axial U(1) symmetry in 2-flavor QCD at finite temperature, where the non-singlet chiral symmetry is restored. We first summarize the previous theoretical investigation on the relation between the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator and the axial U(1) symmetry. We show that the eigenvalue density near the origin behaves as $λ^γ$ with $γ> 2$ in the chirally symmetric phase, where $λ$ is an eigenvalue. This implies that the axial U(1) symmetry is partially restored, so that the low energy symmetry of the theory becomes SU(2)$\otimes$ SU(2)$\otimes$ Z$_4$. Secondly,…
