We investigate the lightlike limit of stationary spacelike string configurations on a large class of five-dimensional asymptotically AdS backgrounds. Specific examples include gravity duals which incorporate finite 't Hooft coupling, curvature-squared corrections, and chemical potentials. A universal feature of these AdS/CFT models is that the string solution with minimum action yields a lightlike Wilson loop whose leading behavior is exponentially linear, rather than quadratic, in the width of the loop. Unless there is a compelling reason for discarding the leading saddlepoint contribution to the Wilson loop, following the proposal of Liu et. al. [2] leads to zero jet-quenching parameter for all of these models.
We develop a matrix model for the SO(32) Heterotic string with certain Wilson lines on the lightlike circle. This is done by using appropriate T-dualities. The method works for an infinite number of Wilson lines, but not for all. The matrix model is the theory on the D-string of type I wrapped on a circle with a SO(32) Wilson line on the circle. The radius of the circle depends on the Wilson line. This is a 1+1 dimensional O(N) theory on a circle. N depends not only on the momentum around the lightlike circle but also on the winding and SO(32) quantum numbers of the state. Perspectives for obt…
Expectation value of lightlike polygon Wilson loop is computed in the three-dimensional ABJM theory up to second-order in `t Hooft coupling in the limit of infinitely many colors and the result is critically compared with that in the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We first obtain analytic result for hexagon Wilson loop by combining Mellin-Barnes transformation, high precision numerical computation and the PSLQ algorithm. We then derive a version of operator product expansion (OPE) that reduces lightlike n-gon to a linear combination of (n-2)-gons in the soft-collinear limit of t…
We investigate stationary string solutions with spacelike worldsheet in a five-dimensional AdS black hole background, and find that there are many branches of such solutions. Using a non-perturbative definition of the jet quenching parameter proposed by Liu et. al., hep-ph/0605178, we take the lightlike limit of these solutions to evaluate the jet quenching parameter in an N=4 super Yang-Mills thermal bath. We show that this proposed definition gives zero jet quenching parameter, independent of how the lightlike limit is taken. In particular, the minimum-action solution giving the dominant con…
We find a new duality for form factors of lightlike Wilson loops in planar $\mathcal N=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The duality maps a form factor involving an $n$-sided lightlike polygonal super-Wilson loop together with $m$ external on-shell states, to the same type of object but with the edges of the Wilson loop and the external states swapping roles. This relation can essentially be seen graphically in Lorentz harmonic chiral (LHC) superspace where it is equivalent to planar graph duality. However there are some crucial subtleties with the cancellation of spurious poles due to the gauge fix…
We calculate Wilson loop (quark anti-quark potential) in dS/CFT correspondence. The brane-world model is considered where bulk is two 5d Euclidean de Sitter spaces and boundary (brane) is 4d de Sitter one. Starting from the Nambu-Goto action, the calculation of the effective tension (average energy) is presented. Unlike to the case of supergravity calculation of Wilson loop in AdS/CFT set-up, there is no need to regularize the Nambu-Goto action (the volume of de Sitter space is finite). It turns out that at sufficiently small curvature of 5d background the energy (potential) is positive and li…
We study long-distance singularities governing different physical quantities involving massless partons in perturbative QCD by using factorisation in terms of Wilson-line correlators. By isolating the process-independent hard-collinear singularities from quark and gluon form factors, and identifying these with the ones governing the elastic limit of the perturbative Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) -- $δ(1-x)$ in the large-$x$ limit of DGLAP splitting functions -- we extract the anomalous dimension controlling soft singularities of the PDFs, verifying that it admits Casimir scaling. We the…
The strong subadditivity is the most important inequality which entanglement entropy satisfies. Based on the AdS/CFT conjecture, entanglement entropy in CFT is equal to the area of the minimal surface in AdS space. It is known that a Wilson loop can also be holographically computed from the minimal surface in AdS space. In this paper, we argue that Wilson loops also satisfy a similar inequality, and find several evidences of it.
The Wilson loop in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory admits a dual description as a macroscopic string configuration in the adS/CFT correspondence. We discuss the correction to the quark anti-quark potential arising from the fluctuations of the superstring.
We study the supersymmetric Wilson loop as introduced by Caron-Huot, which attaches to lightlike polygons certain edge and vertex operators, whose shape is determined by supersymmetry constraints. We state explicit formulas for the vertex operators to all orders in the Graßmann expansion, thus filling a gap in the literature. This is achieved by deriving a recursion formula out of the supersymmetry constraints.
We provide a refined interpretation of a gravitational Wilson line in AdS$_3$ in terms of Ishibashi states in the dual CFT$_2$. Our strategy is to give a method to evaluate the Wilson line that accounts for all the information contained in the representation, and clarify the role of boundary conditions at the endpoints of the line operator. This gives a novel way to explore and reconstruct the local bulk dynamics which we discuss. We also compare our findings with other interpretations of Ishibashi states in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$.
Webs are sets of Feynman diagrams which manifest soft gluon exponentiation in gauge theory scattering amplitudes: individual webs contribute to the logarithm of the amplitude and their ultraviolet renormalization encodes its infrared structure. In this paper, we consider the particular class of boomerang webs, consisting of multiple gluon exchanges, but where at least one gluon has both of its endpoints on the same Wilson line. First, we use the replica trick to prove that diagrams involving self-energy insertions along the Wilson line do not contribute to the web, i.e. their exponentiated col…
The AdS/CFT correspondence predicts a phase transition in Wilson loop correlators in the strong coupling N=4, D=4 SYM theory which arises due to instability of the classical string stretched between the loops. We study this transition in detail by solving equations of motion for the string in the particular case of two circular Wilson loops. The transition is argued to be smoothened at finite `t Hooft coupling by fluctuations of the string world sheet and to be promoted to a sharp crossover. Some general comments about Wilson loop correlators in gauge theories are made.
Guided by the paper hep-th/0002106 by Polyakov and Rychkov, we compute the second variational derivative of a wavy plane Wilson surface observable, to find that a necessary condition for a proposed surface equation to be satisfied in the large $N$ limit is that we are in the critical dimension D=6.
We study operator insertions into the $1/2$ BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and determine their two-point coefficients, anomalous dimensions and structure constants. The calculation is done for the first few lowest dimension insertions and relies on known results for the expectation value of a smooth Wilson loop. In addition to the particular coefficients that we calculate, our study elucidates the connection between deformations of the line and operator insertions and between the vacuum expectation value of the line and the CFT data of the insertions.
We study AdS$_{7}$/CFT$_{6}$ correspondence between M-theory on AdS$_{7} \times S^{4}$ and the 6D $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ superconformal field theory. In particular we focus on Wilson surfaces. We use the conjecture that the (2,0) theory compactified on $S^{1}$ is equivalent to the 5D maximal super Yang-Mills (MSYM) and Wilson surfaces wrapping this $S^1$ correspond to Wilson loops in 5D MSYM. The Wilson loops in 5D MSYM obtained by the localization technique result in the Chern-Simons matrix model. We calculate the expectation values of Wilson surfaces in large rank symmetric representations an…
We give a short introduction to and a partial review of the work on the calculation of Wilson loops and $Q\bar Q$-potentials via the conjectured AdS/CFT duality. Included is a discussion of the relative weight of the stringy correction to the target space background versus the correction by the quantum fluctuations of the string world sheet.
The $p$-adic AdS/CFT is a holographic duality based on the $p$-adic number field $\mathbb{Q}_p$. For a $p$-adic CFT living on $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and with complex-valued fields, the bulk theory is defined on the Bruhat-Tits tree, which can be viewed as the bulk dual of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We propose that bulk theory can be formulated as a lattice gauge theory of PGL$(2,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ on the Bruhat-Tits tree, and show that the Wilson line networks in this lattice gauge theory can reproduce all the correlation functions of the boundary $p$-adic CFT.
Wilson loops which are small deviations from straight, infinite lines, called wavy lines, are considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. A single wavy line and the connected correlation function of a straight and wavy line are considered. It is argued that, to leading order in ``waviness'', the functional form of the loop is universal and the coefficient, which is a function of the 't Hooft coupling, is found in weak coupling perturbation theory and the strong coupling limit using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Supersymmetric arguments are used to simplify the computation and to sho…
In this paper we study string theory in the background $\mathcal{M}_3$ that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the IR and linear dilaton spacetime $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}\times\mathbb{R}_ϕ$ in the UV. Via holographic duality this background corresponds to $\rm{CFT}_2$ deformed by a dimension $(2,2)$ operator. Here we discuss the holographic Wilson loop in such a model and shed more light in support of the non-local structure of the theory (Little String Theory (LST)) in the UV. We also discuss quantum and thermal phase transitions of the boundary theory.
A previous calculation of the phase transition in the Wilson loop correlator in the zero temperature AdS/CFT correspondence is extended to the case where the loops are concentric circles of unequal radii. This phase transition occurs due to the instability of the classical string stretched between the loops. We compute the string action and its expansion in the distance h between the loops for small h. We also find that the connected minimal surface is subleading or does not even exist when h=0 and the radii are considerably different. This feature has no analogue in flat space.
In hep-th/9803002, Maldacena argued that in the light of the AdS/CFT correspondence as formulated by Witten and Gubser, Klebanov and Polyakov as a relation between partition functions, the expectation value of the Wilson loop in $\cal N$=4 SU(N) SYM is given by the worldsheet partition function with the action formulated on an $AdS_5\times S^5$ background and the world sheet ending on the loop on the boundary of $AdS_5$. What we propose to do in this paper is to provide some alternative arguments as to why it should be so.
Previously, two of the present authors obtained the decoupling limit and the corresponding throat geometry of non-supersymmetric D3 brane solution of type IIB string theory. In analogy with the supersymmetric case, it describes the gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric gauge theory with QCD-like properties such as running coupling and confinement (or mass gap) in certain range of its parameters. In this paper, we consider a `black' version of the non-supersymmetric D3 brane solution in the decoupling limit and use this gravity background to holographically compute the expectation value of a tim…
Expectation values of Wilson loops define the nonperturbative properties of the hot medium produced in heavy ion collisions that arise in the analysis of both radiative parton energy loss and quarkonium suppression. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the expectation values of such Wilson loops in the strongly coupled plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, allowing for the possibility that the plasma may be moving with some collective flow velocity as is the case in heavy ion collisions. We obtain the N=4 SYM values of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$, which describes the …
We study the two circular Wilson loop correlator in which one is of anti-symmetric representation, while the other is of fundamental representation in 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. This correlator has a good AdS dual, which is a system of a D5-brane and a fundamental string. We calculated the on-shell action of the string, and clarified the Gross-Ooguri transition in this correlator. Some limiting cases are also examined.
We study at quantum level correlators of supersymmetric Wilson loops with contours lying on Hopf fibers of $S^3$. In $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory the strong coupling analysis can be performed using the AdS/CFT correspondence and a connected classical string surface, linking two different fibers, is presented. More precisely, the string solution describes oppositely oriented fibers with the same scalar coupling and depends on an angular parameter, interpolating between a non-BPS configuration and a BPS one. The system can be thought as an alternative deformation of the ordinary antiparallel lines…
We study correlation functions of local operator insertions on the 1/2-BPS Wilson line in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These correlation functions are constrained by the 1d superconformal symmetry preserved by the 1/2-BPS Wilson line and define a defect CFT$_1$ living on the line. At strong coupling, a set of elementary operator insertions with protected scaling dimensions correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ ending on the line at the boundary and can be thought of as light fields propagating on the AdS$_2$ worldsheet. We use AdS/CFT techniqu…
We study the supersymmetric Wilson loops in the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. In the gauge theory side, it is known that the expectation value of the Wilson loops of circular shape with winding number k is calculable by using a Gaussian matrix model. On the other hand, in the gravity side, it has been conjectured that the expectation value of the Wilson loop is given by the classical value of the action for a probe D3-brane with k electric fluxes. Given such correspondence, we pursue the interpretation of the matrix model eigenvalue dens…
We formulate a correspondence between non-relativistic conformal field theories (NRCFTs) in d-1 spatial dimensions and gravitational theories in AdS_{d+2} backgrounds with one compactified lightlike direction. The breaking of the maximal SO(2,d+1) symmetry of AdS_{d+2} to the non-relativistic conformal group arises from boundary conditions on bulk fields, without the need to introduce non-vacuum sources of energy-momentum. As a check of the proposal, we use the gravitational theory to reproduce the NRCFT state-operator correspondence between scaling dimensions of primary operators and energy e…
We consider Heterotic string theories in the DLCQ. We derive that the matrix model of the Spin(32)/$Z_2$ Heterotic theory is the theory living on N D-strings in type I wound on a circle with no Spin(32)/$Z_2$ Wilson line on the circle. This is an O(N) gauge theory. We rederive the matrix model for the $\e8$ Heterotic string theory, explicitly taking care of the Wilson line around the lightlike circle. The result is the same theory as for Spin(32)/$Z_2$ except that now there is a Wilson line on the circle. We also see that the integer N labeling the sector of the O(N) matrix model is not just t…
Wilson loops with lightlike polygonal contours have been conjectured to be equivalent to MHV scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We compute such Wilson loops for special polygonal contours at two loops in perturbation theory. Specifically, we concentrate on the remainder function R, obtained by subtracting the known ABDK/BDS ansatz from the Wilson loop. First, we consider a particular two-dimensional eight-point kinematics studied at strong coupling by Alday and Maldacena. We find numerical evidence that R is the same at weak and at strong coupling, up to an overall, coupling-depend…
One of the many remarkable features of MHV scattering amplitudes is their conjectured equality to lightlike polygon Wilson loops, which apparently holds at all orders in perturbation theory as well as non-perturbatively. This duality is usually expressed in terms of purely four-dimensional quantities obtained by appropriate subtraction of the IR and UV divergences from amplitudes and Wilson loops respectively. In this paper we demonstrate, by explicit calculation, the completely unanticipated fact that the equality continues to hold at two loops through order epsilon in dimensional regularizat…
The half-supersymmetric Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM is arguably the central non-local operator in the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the field theory side, the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops in arbitrary representations of $SU(N)$ are captured to all orders in perturbation theory by a Gaussian matrix model. Of prominent interest are the $k$-symmetric and $k$-antisymmetric representations, whose gravitational description is given in terms of D3- and D5-branes, respectively, with fluxes in their world volumes. At leading order in $N$ and $λ$ the agreement in both cases is exact. In …
Following Polchinski and Sully (arXiv:1104.5077), we consider a generalized Wilson loop operator containing a constant parameter $ζ$ in front of the scalar coupling term, so that $ζ=0$ corresponds to the standard Wilson loop, while $ζ=1$ to the locally supersymmetric one. We compute the expectation value of this operator for circular loop as a function of $ζ$ to second order in the planar weak coupling expansion in N=4 SYM theory. We then explain the relation of the expansion near the two conformal points $ζ=0$ and $ζ=1$ to the correlators of scalar operators inserted on the loop. We also disc…
We test the AdS/CFT correspondence by calculating Wilson loops in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on R*S^3 in the planar limit. Our method is based on a novel large-N reduction, which reduces the problem to Monte Carlo calculations in the plane-wave matrix model or the BMN matrix model, which is a 1d gauge theory with 16 supercharges. By using the gauge-fixed momentumspace simulation, we obtain results respecting 16 supersymmetries. We report on the Monte Carlo results for the BPS circular Wilson loop, which reproduce the exact result up to strong coupling. As a future prospect, we calculate a t…
We address the problem of computing scattering amplitudes related to the correlation function of two Wilson lines and/or loops elongated along light-cone directions in strongly coupled gauge theories. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence in the classical approximation, the amplitudes are shown to be related to minimal surfaces generalizing the {\em helicoid} in various $AdS_5$ backgrounds. Infra-red divergences appearing for Wilson lines can be factorized out or can be cured by considering the IR finite case of correlation functions of two Wilson loops. In non-conformal cases related to confining …
We consider 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops in a class of 5d superconformal field theories on S^5. The large N limit of the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops are computed both by localization in the field theory and by evaluating the fundamental string and D4-brane actions in the dual massive IIA supergravity background. We find agreement in the leading large N limit for a rather general class of representations, including fundamental, anti-symmetric and symmetric representations. For single node theories the match is straightforward, while for quiver theories, the Wilson loop can be in …
We compute a set of correlation functions of operator insertions on the 1/8 BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM by employing supersymmetric localization, OPE and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. These correlators exhibit a simple determinant structure, are position-independent and form a topological subsector, but depend nontrivially on the 't Hooft coupling and the rank of the gauge group. When applied to the 1/2 BPS circular (or straight) Wilson loop, our results provide an infinite family of exact defect CFT data, including the structure constants of protected defect primaries of arbi…
We study the self-energy of a gravitating point particle in AdS$_3$, and compare to operator dimensions in CFT$_2$. In particular, we compute the one and two loop diagram contributions to the expectation value of an open Wilson line in the SL(2,R)$\times$ SL(2,R) Chern-Simons formulation of AdS$_3$ gravity. This gives the two-point function of CFT primary operators to second order in a large $c$ expansion, and hence yields the scaling dimension $h(j,c)$ as a function of the SL(2,R) spin $j$. Comparison to CFT is made in the context of constructing Virasoro representations starting from represe…
We compute the entanglement entropy of the Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory (CFT) in 2+1 dimensions with O($N$) symmetry in the limit of large $N$ for general entanglement geometries. We show that the leading large $N$ result can be obtained from the entanglement entropy of $N$ Gaussian scalar fields with their mass determined by the geometry. For a few geometries, the universal part of the entanglement entropy of the Wilson-Fisher CFT equals that of a CFT of $N$ massless scalar fields. However, in most cases, these CFTs have a distinct universal entanglement entropy even at $N=\infty$. No…
In this paper we consider $ϕ^4$ theory in $4-ε$ dimensions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point where the theory becomes conformal. We extend the method in arXiv:1505.00963 for calculating the leading order term in the anomalous dimensions of some operators with spin. This method involves mostly symmetry arguments and reduces the process for calculating anomalous dimensions to some Wick contractions in the corresponding free theory. We apply this method in the case of operators with two and three fields whose twist is equal to the number of fields they contain, and we rederive known results for th…
We study local operator insertions on 1/2-BPS line defects in ABJM theory. Specifically, we consider a class of four-point correlators in the CFT$_1$ with SU$(1, 1|3)$ superconformal symmetry defined on the 1/2-BPS Wilson line. The relevant insertions belong to the short supermultiplet containing the displacement operator and correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_4 \times \mathbb{C}\textrm{P}^3$ ending on the line at the boundary. We use superspace techniques to represent the displacement supermultiplet and we show that superconformal symmetry determines the four-po…
We study multipoint correlators of protected scalars on the Maldacena-Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Working at weak coupling in the planar limit, we derive an explicit recursion relation that captures next-to-leading order correlators with an arbitrary number of insertions of the fundamental scalar field. By pinching fundamental scalars together, we can build composite protected operators with higher values of the R-charge. Our result then encompasses arbitrary $n$-point correlators of protected operators with arbitrary weight. As a demonstration of our method, we give explicit formulae …
We compute for the first time the two-loop corrections to arbitrary n-gon lightlike Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using efficient numerical methods. The calculation is motivated by the remarkable agreement between the finite part of planar six-point MHV amplitudes and hexagon Wilson loops which has been observed at two loops. At n=6 we confirm that the ABDK/BDS ansatz must be corrected by adding a remainder function, which depends only on conformally invariant ratios of kinematic variables. We numerically compute remainder functions for n=7,8 and verify dual conformal i…
Correlators of local operators inserted on a straight Wilson loop in a conformal gauge theory have the structure of a one-dimensional "defect" CFT. As was shown in arXiv:1706.00756, in the case of supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM one can compute the strong-coupling contributions to 4-point correlators of operator insertions by starting with the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ string action expanded near the AdS$_2$ minimal surface and evaluating the corresponding AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams. We perform the analogous computations in the non-supersymmetric case of the standard Wilson l…
We study an anisotropic scale transformation in the worldsheet description of D3-branes in Type IIB theory, and show that the transformation is really a symmetry in a region near D3-branes. AdS/CFT correspondence follows from this symmetry. We will explicitly show that Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and minimal surfaces in AdS_5 are related by the symmetry. The functional form of a supersymmetric Wilson loop operator is naturally derived from our worldsheet point of view.
We study massless open and closed string scattering amplitudes in flat space at high energies. Similarly to the case of AdS space, we demonstrate that, under the T-duality map, the open string amplitudes are given by the exponential of minus minimal surface areas whose boundaries are cusped closed loops formed by lightlike momentum vectors. We show further that the closed string amplitudes are obtained by gluing two copies of minimal surfaces along their cusped lightlike boundaries. This can be thought of as a manifestation of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relation at high energies. We also dis…
We first apply the transformation of mixing azimuthal and internal coordinate to the 11D M-theory with a stack N M2-branes to find the spacetime of a stack of N D2-branes with Melvin one-form in 10D IIA string theory, after the Kaluza-Klein reduction. Next, we apply the Melvin twist to the spacetime and perform the T duality to obtain the background of a stack of N D3-branes. In the near-horizon limit the background becomes the Melvin field deformed $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with NS-NS B field. In the AdS/CFT correspondence it describes a non-commutative gauge theory with non-constant non-commutativi…
We note that the energy loss in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM measures directly the spatial string tension $σ_S=π\sqrtλT^2/2$ which is at the origin of the area law for large spatial Wilson loops. We show that the latter reflects on the nonperturbative nature of Ampere's law in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM both in vacuum and at finite temperature.
We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualitie…
