We study local operator insertions on 1/2-BPS line defects in ABJM theory. Specifically, we consider a class of four-point correlators in the CFT$_1$ with SU$(1, 1|3)$ superconformal symmetry defined on the 1/2-BPS Wilson line. The relevant insertions belong to the short supermultiplet containing the displacement operator and correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_4 \times \mathbb{C}\textrm{P}^3$ ending on the line at the boundary. We use superspace techniques to represent the displacement supermultiplet and we show that superconformal symmetry determines the four-point correlators of its components in terms of a single function of the one-dimensional cross-ratio. Such function is highly constrained by crossing and internal consistency, allowing us to use an analytical bootstrap approach to find the first subleading correction at strong coupling. Finally, we use AdS/CFT to compute the same four-point functions through tree-level AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams, producing a result that is perfectly consistent with the bootstrap solution.
We combine supersymmetric localization results and the numerical conformal bootstrap technique to study the 3d maximally supersymmetric (${\cal N} = 8$) CFT on $N$ coincident M2-branes (the $U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$). In particular, we perform a mixed correlator bootstrap study of the superconformal primaries of the stress tensor multiplet and of the next possible lowest-dimension half-BPS multiplet that is allowed by 3d ${\cal N} = 8$ superconformal symmetry. Of all known 3d ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs, the $k=1$ ABJM theory is the only one that contains both …
The Schwinger-Dyson equations for Green functions and 3-vertexes in planar approximation used 50 years ago in the earlier theory of conformal bootstrap are written in frames of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The technique of "Wightman-Witten" diagrams is used in calculations of the bubble bulk diagrams that permitted to obtain the values of conformal dimensions of primary operators in two models of the interacting bulk scalar fields which conformal dimensions obey "extremal" relation. Simple expressions for the four-point tree "Wightman-Witten" correlators of these primary operators are obtained …
In the context of the recently proposed L$_\infty$ bootstrap approach, the question arises whether the so constructed gauge theories are unique solutions of the L$_\infty$ relations. Physically it is expected that two gauge theories should be considered equivalent if they are related by a field redefinition described by a Seiberg-Witten map. To clarify the consequences in the L$_\infty$ framework, it is proven that Seiberg-Witten maps between physically equivalent gauge theories correspond to quasi-isomorphisms of the underlying L$_\infty$ algebras. The proof suggests an extension of the defin…
We elaborate on some general aspects of the crossing symmetric approach of Polyakov to the conformal bootstrap, as recently formulated in Mellin space. This approach uses, as building blocks, Witten diagrams in AdS. We show the necessity for having contact Witten diagrams, in addition to the exchange ones, in two different contexts: a) the large $c$ expansion of the holographic bootstrap b) in the $ε$ expansion at subleading orders to the ones studied already. In doing so, we use alternate simplified representations of the Witten diagrams in Mellin space. This enables us to also obtain compact…
We explore a contact point between two distinct approaches to the confinment problem. We show that BLG-ABJM like theories generate gauge propagators with just the complex pole structure prescribed by the Gribov scenario for confinemnt. This structure, known as i-particles in Gribov-Zwanziger theories, effectively allows the definition of composite operators with a positive Källén-Lehmann spectral representation for their two-point functions . Then, these operators satisfy the criteria to describe glue-ball condensates. We calculate the (first order) contribution to the two-point function of th…
We investigate D-branes in the Nappi-Witten model. Classically symmetric D-branes are classified by the (twisted) conjugacy classes of the Nappi-Witten group, which specify the geometry of the corresponding D-branes. Quantum description of the D-branes is given by boundary states, and we need one point functions of closed strings to construct the boundary states. We compute the one point functions solving conformal bootstrap constraints, and check that the classical limit of the boundary states reproduces the geometry of D-branes.
Bootstrap equations for conformal correlators that mimic the early theory of conformal bootstrap are written down in frames of the AdS/CFT approach. The simplified version of these equations, that may be justified if Schwinger-Keldysh formalism is used in AdS/CFT instead of conventional Feynman-Witten diagrams technique, permits to calculate values of conformal dimensions in the $O(N)$ symmetric model with conformal or composite Hubbard-Stratonovich field.
We provide a proof for the conjectured equality of the generating function of integrated Higgs and Coulomb branch topological operators in 3d $\mathcal{N}\ge 4$ gauge theories and the three sphere partition function deformed by mass or FI parameters. The equality is the result of cohomological equivalence and applies to all theories in this class, including ABJM and other generalized Gaiotto-Witten models, and those without an explicit supersymmetric Lagrangian.
We clarify the relationships between different approaches to the conformal bootstrap. A central role is played by the so-called extremal functionals. They are linear functionals acting on the crossing equation which are directly responsible for the optimal bounds of the numerical bootstrap. We explain in detail that the extremal functionals probe the Regge limit. We construct two complete sets of extremal functionals for the crossing equation specialized to $z=\bar{z}$, associated to the generalized free boson and fermion theories. These functionals lead to non-perturbative sum rules on the CF…
Witten diagrams are basic objects for studying dynamics in AdS space, and also play key roles in the analytic functional bootstrap. However, these diagrams are notoriously hard to evaluate, making it extremely difficult to search for recursion relations among them. In this note, we present simple methods to obtain recursion relations for exchange Witten diagrams from conformal block recursion relations. We discover a variety of new relations, including the dimensional reduction formulae for exchange Witten diagrams. In particular, we find a five-term recursion relation relating exchange Witten…
We review recent progress in the study of line defects in three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter superconformal field theories, notably the ABJM theory. The first part is focused on kinematical defects supporting a topological sector of the theory. After reviewing the construction of this sector, we concentrate on the evaluation of topological correlators from the partition function of the mass-deformed ABJM theory and provide evidence on the existence of a topological quantum mechanics living on the line. In the second part, we consider dynamical defects realized as latitude BPS Wilson loops f…
The double-trace from UV to IR flow subtraction of infinities used earlier for the UV-convergent calculations of the Witten tadpole diagrams being applied to the bubble self-energy diagrams gives for them the amazingly simple expressions in case of the four-dimensional boundary space. For every $N = 1... 4$ in the $O(N)$ symmetric scalar fields model with the conformal Hubbard-Stratonovich field there are three roots of the "old" conformal bootstrap spectral equations that obey unitarity bound demand.
Attempts to resolve the longstanding Fermion mass hierarchy (FMH) problem in frames of the AdS/CFT correspondence demand the knowledge of bulk fermion masses. The approach of the "old" conformal bootstrap in AdS context permitted to calculate bulk masses of scalar fields [1], [2]. In the present paper this approach is extended to physically more interesting spin 1/2 bulk fields. Calculation of spinor-scalar vertices is performed in physical AdS space, and unexpectedly simple expressions for spinor-scalar bubbles (2-point one-loop self-energy Witten diagrams) are obtained. The "double-trace fro…
We consider the four-point function of operators in the stress tensor multiplet of the $U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory, in the limit where $N$ is taken to infinity while $N/k^{5}$ is held fixed. In this limit, ABJM theory is holographically dual to type IIA string theory on $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ at finite string coupling $g_s \sim (N/k^5)^{1/4}$. While at leading order in $1/N$, the stress tensor multiplet four-point function can be computed from type IIA supergravity, in this work we focus on the first subleading correction, which comes from tree level Witten diagrams with an $R^4$…
We revisit the consistency of torus partition functions in (1+1)$d$ fermionic conformal field theories, combining traditional ingredients of modular invariance/covariance with a modernized understanding of bosonization/fermionization dualities. Various lessons can be learned by simply examining the oft-ignored Ramond sector. For several extremal/kinky modular functions in the bootstrap literature, we can either rule out or identify the underlying theory. We also revisit the ${\cal N} = 1$ Maloney-Witten partition function by calculating the spectrum in the Ramond sector, and further extending …

${\cal N} = 8$ superconformal field theories, such as the ABJM theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$ or $2$, contain 35 scalar operators ${\cal O}_{IJ}$ with $Δ=1$ in the ${\bf 35}_v$ representation of SO(8). The 3-point correlation function of these operators is non-vanishing, and indeed can be calculated non-perturbatively in the field theory. But its AdS$_4$ gravity dual, obtained from gauged ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity, has no cubic $A^3$ couplings in its Lagrangian, where $A^{IJ}$ is the bulk dual of ${\cal O}_{IJ}$. So conventional Witten diagrams cannot furnish the field theory result. We sh…
We propose a new approach towards analytically solving for the dynamical content of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) using the bootstrap philosophy. This combines the original bootstrap idea of Polyakov with the modern technology of the Mellin representation of CFT amplitudes. We employ exchange Witten diagrams with built in crossing symmetry as our basic building blocks rather than the conventional conformal blocks in a particular channel. Demanding consistency with the operator product expansion (OPE) implies an infinite set of constraints on operator dimensions and OPE coefficients. We illus…
The soft bootstrap program aims to construct consistent effective field theories (EFT's) by recursively imposing the desired soft limit on tree-level scattering amplitudes through on-shell recursion relations. A prime example is the leading two-derivative operator in the EFT of $\text{SU} (N)\times \text{SU} (N)/\text{SU} (N)$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM), where $ \mathcal{O} (p^2)$ amplitudes with an arbitrary multiplicity of external particles can be soft-bootstrapped. We extend the program to $ \mathcal{O} (p^4)$ operators and introduce the "soft blocks," which are the seeds for soft bootst…
We present a compact formula for the supersymmetric partition function of 2d N=(2,2), 3d N=2 and 4d N=1 gauge theories on $Σ_g \times T^n$ with partial topological twist on $Σ_g$, where $Σ_g$ is a Riemann surface of arbitrary genus and $T^n$ is a torus with n=0,1,2, respectively. In 2d we also include certain local operator insertions, and in 3d we include Wilson line operator insertions along $S^1$. For genus g=1, the formula computes the Witten index. We present a few simple Abelian and non-Abelian examples, including new tests of non-perturbative dualities. We also show that the large N par…
We describe in more detail our approach to the conformal bootstrap which uses the Mellin representation of $CFT_d$ four point functions and expands them in terms of crossing symmetric combinations of $AdS_{d+1}$ Witten exchange functions. We consider arbitrary external scalar operators and set up the conditions for consistency with the operator product expansion. Namely, we demand cancellation of spurious powers (of the cross ratios, in position space) which translate into spurious poles in Mellin space. We discuss two contexts in which we can immediately apply this method by imposing the simp…
It is well established that the $O(N)$ Wilson-Fisher (WF) CFT sits at a kink of the numerical bounds from bootstrapping four point function of $O(N)$ vector. Moving away from the WF kinks, there indeed exists another family of kinks (dubbed non-WF kinks) on the curve of $O(N)$ numerical bounds. Different from the $O(N)$ WF kinks that exist for arbitary $N$ in $2<d<4$ dimensions, the non-WF kinks exist in arbitrary dimensions but only for a large enough $N>N_c(d)$ in a given dimension $d$. In this paper we have achieved a thorough understanding for few special cases of these non-WF kinks. The f…
We derive a simple relation between the Mellin amplitude for AdS/CFT correlation functions and the bulk S-Matrix in the flat spacetime limit, proving a conjecture of Penedones. As a consequence of the Operator Product Expansion, the Mellin amplitude for any unitary CFT must be a meromorphic function with simple poles on the real axis. This provides a powerful and suggestive handle on the locality vis-a-vis analyticity properties of the S-Matrix. We begin to explore analyticity by showing how the familiar poles and branch cuts of scattering amplitudes arise from the holographic description. For…
We develop a Mellin space approach to boundary correlation functions in anti-de Sitter (AdS) and de Sitter (dS) spaces. Using the Mellin-Barnes representation of correlators in Fourier space, we show that the analytic continuation between AdS$_{d+1}$ and dS$_{d+1}$ is encoded in a collection of simple relative phases. This allows us to determine the late-time tree-level three-point correlators of spinning fields in dS$_{d+1}$ from known results for Witten diagrams in AdS$_{d+1}$ by multiplication with a simple trigonometric factor. At four point level, we show that Conformal symmetry fixes exc…
We develop an analytic approach to Boundary Conformal Field Theory (BCFT), focussing on the two-point function of a general pair of scalar primary operators. The resulting crossing equation can be thought of as a vector equation in an infinite-dimensional space ${\cal V}$ of analytic functions of a single complex variable. We argue that in a unitary theory, functions in ${\cal V}$ satisfy a boundedness condition in the Regge limit. We identify a useful basis for ${\cal V}$, consisting of bulk and boundary conformal blocks with scaling dimensions which appear in OPEs of the mean field theory co…
In this thesis we study the AdS3 Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model. We compute the Operator Product Expansion of primary fields as well as their images under the spectral flow automorphism in all sectors of the model by considering it as a Wick rotation of the H3+ coset model. We argue that the symmetries of the affine algebra require a truncation which establishes the closure of the fusion rules on the Hilbert space of the theory. These results are then used to discuss the factorization of four point functions by applying the bootstrap approach. We also study the modular properties of the mode…
