This review summarizes the motivations for and phenomenological consequences of nonstandard Higgs boson decays, with emphasis on final states containing a pair of non-Standard-Model particles that subsequently decay to Standard Model particles. Typically these non-Standard-Model particles are part of a ``hidden'' sector, for example a pair of neutral Higgs bosons or a pair of unstable neutralinos. We emphasize that such decays allow for a Higgs substantially below the Standard Model Higgs LEP limit of 114 GeV. This in turn means that the ``fine-tuning'' problems of many Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories, in particular supersymmetric models, can be eliminated while achieving excellent consistency with precision electroweak data which favor a Higgs boson with mass below $100\gev$ and standard $WW$, $ZZ$, and top couplings.
We determine the contribution to the $S$ and $T$ parameters coming from extensions of the standard model featuring a light nonstandard-like Higgs particle. We neatly separate, using the Landau gauge, the contribution from the purely nonstandard Higgs sector, from the one due to the interplay of this sector with the standard model. If the nonstandard Higgs sector derives from a new type of near conformal dynamics, the formalism allows to precisely link the intrinsic underlying contribution with the experimentally relevant parameters.
We discuss the phenomenology of many Higgs doublet model - the model where each Higgs isodoublet couples with each own quark and lepton with relatively big Yukawa coupling constants. Namely, we discuss the discovery potential of the Higgs bosons at LHC and find lower mass limits on nonstandard Higgs bosons from FNAL data.
In a wide class of extensions of the Standard Model there is a scalar resonance with the quantum numbers of the usual Higgs boson but with different couplings to fermions and gauge bosons. Using an effective Lagrangian description, we examine the phenomenology of such a generic nonstandard Higgs boson at the LHC. In particular, we determine the circumstances under which such a particle can be observed in its $ZZ$ decay mode and distinguished from the Higgs boson of the Standard Model. We briefly comment on the energy scale effectively probed at the LHC, if the nonstandard nature of an observed…
We show that in Composite Higgs models, the coupling of the Higgs resonance to a pair of $W$ bosons is weaker than the corresponding Standard Model coupling, provided the Higgs arises from electroweak doublets only. This is partly due to the effects of the nonlinear realization of the chiral symmetries at the compositeness scale.
We consider the exotic decays of the SM-like Higgs state within the E6 inspired supersymmetric (SUSY) models. In these models the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) can be substantially lighter than 1 eV forming hot dark matter in the Universe. The next--to--lightest SUSY particle (NLSP) also tend to be light. We argue that the NLSP with GeV scale mass may lead to the substantial branching ratio of the nonstandard decays of the SM-like Higgs boson into NLSPs.
We study the nonstandard decays of the lightest Higgs state within the Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM). We argued that the SM--like Higgs boson can decay predominantly into dark matter particles while its branching ratios into SM particles varies from 2% to 4%. This scenario also implies the presence of other relatively light Inert chargino and neutralino states in the particle spectrum with masses below 200 GeV. We argue that in this case the decays of the lightest Higgs boson into l^{+} l^{-} + X may play an essential role in the Higgs searches.
We examine the constraints coming from incorporating the full Standard Model gauge symmetry into the effective field theory description of flavor processes, using semileptonic decays as paradigmatic examples. Depending on the dynamics triggering electroweak symmetry breaking, different patterns of correlations between the Wilson coefficients arise. Interestingly, this implies that flavor experiments are capable of shedding light upon the nature of the Higgs boson without actually requiring Higgs final states. Furthermore, the observed correlations can simplify model-independent analyses of the…
A locally SU(2)xU(1)-invariant term of dimension six with effective interactions of the electroweak gauge and Higgs fields is examined. This term also contains higher derivatives of the fields. It yields nonstandard quartic gauge-boson self-interactions but neither nonstandard cubic self-interactions nor tree-level effects on presently measurable quantities.

We compute the fully differential rate for the Higgs-boson decay $h\to Z\ell^+\ell^-$, with $Z\to\ell^{'+}\ell^{'-}$. For these processes we assume the most general matrix elements within an effective Lagrangian framework. The electroweak chiral Lagrangian we employ assumes minimal particle content and Standard Model gauge symmetries, but is otherwise completely general. We discuss how information on new physics in the decay form factors may be obtained that is inaccessible in the dilepton-mass spectrum integrated over angular variables. The form factors are related to the coefficients of the …
We study the implications of non-standard Higgs Yukawa couplings to light quarks on Higgs-portal dark matter phenomenology. Saturating the present experimental bounds on up-quark, down-quark, or strange-quark Yukawa couplings, the predicted direct dark matter detection scattering rate can increase by up to four orders of magnitude. The effect on the dark matter annihilation cross section, on the other hand, is subleading unless the dark matter is very light -- a scenario that is already excluded by measurements of the Higgs invisible decay width. We investigate the expected size of corrections…
The crucial search for the Higgs boson at future colliders is capable of discovering the Standard Model Higgs, but is not guaranteed to discover a Higgs that decays nonstandardly. Such new physics is motivated by many aspects; from experiment, by the tension between precision electroweak fits and the LEP2 direct search bound and from theory, by issues of satisfying the LEP2 bound in theories that naturally have a lighter Higgs. The consistent nonstandard Higgs scenario is that the Higgs is lighter than the LEP2 bound and is consistent with direct search limits because the dominant new decays a…
Experimental and theoretical clues both suggest that the Higgs boson has a mass below the LEP2 lower limit of 114.4 GeV. If true, this suggests that the dominant Higgs decay is nonstandard while the production cross sections remain unmodified. We consider the possibility of nonstandard Higgs decays in the language of On-Shell Effective Theories (OSETs), and discuss a little considered class of Higgs decays, with a topology of both visible and missing energy. We study existing LEP constraints on such decays, and find that such decays would in general be allowed experimentally for ~ 100 GeV mass…
New Physics scenarios generally predict the existence of very heavy quantum states that can possibly manifest themselves as peaks in the cross sections at the LHC. For values of the parameters in certain domains, different nonstandard models can generate peaks with the same mass and same number of events. In this case, the spin determination of a peak, requiring the angular analysis of the events, becomes crucial in order to identify the relevant nonstandard source. We here discuss, using a particularly suitable symmetrically integrated angular asymmetry applied to Drell-Yan dilepton and dipho…
The process e+e- --> W+W- provides a valuable laboratory to test the Standard Model (SM) and to search for new physics. The most general helicity amplitudes for this process require the introduction of nine form-factors which we calculate in the context of SU(2) X U(1) gauge-invariant extensions of the SM. The contributions of new physics are parametrized via an effective Lagrangian constructed from the light fields. Because the mechanism of electroweak symmetry-breaking remains an open problem we consider both the effective Lagrangian with a linearly realized Higgs sector, i.e. with a light p…
In this note, we explore the Tevatron and LHC detection prospects for a nonstandard Higgs whose decays contain both missing and visible energy. In particular, we consider the decay $h \to χ_2 χ_1$ where $χ_1$ is stable and $χ_2$ decay back to $χ_1$ and additional visible particles. We focus on adapting standard searches for both Higgses and supersymmetry to these decays. In these channels, the Tevatron has little reach, but the LHC has good prospects for decays that involve leptons or neutrinos. In particular, the standard WW* search for a Higgs produced in vector boson fusion has the largest …
In this thesis, we investigate the implications of the LHC Higgs data on different BSM scenarios. Since the data seem to agree with the SM expectations, any nonstandard couplings will be strongly constrained. First we investigate, in a model independent way, the constraints on the nonstandard Higgs couplings with the fermions and the vector bosons in view of high energy unitarity and the measured value of the Higgs to diphoton signal strength. Then we concentrate on a particular BSM scenario, namely, the two Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs). Consistency of the Higgs data with the corresponding SM …
We discuss the impact of the presence of a charged Higgs and a $W'$ gauge boson on the tau-neutrino nucleon scattering $ν_τ+ N \rightarrow τ^- + X$ and $\barν_τ+ N \rightarrow τ^+ + X$. We show the effect of the new physics on the three subprocesses quasielastic, $Δ$-resonance, and deep inelastic scattering. The measurement of the atmospheric and reactor mixing angles $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, respectively, relies on the standard model cross section of the above processes if they have been measured in the appearance channels $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ and $\barν_e \rightarrow \barν_τ$ ($ν_e \rightarrow…
We consider charged Higgs and $W'$ gauge boson contributions to the quasielastic scattering $ν_τ+ n \rightarrow τ^- + p$ and $\barν_τ+ p \rightarrow τ^+ + n$ . These effects modify the standard model cross section for these processes and thus impact the extraction of the neutrino mixing angles $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$ . We include form factor effects in our calculations and find the deviation of the actual mixing angle from the measured one, assuming the standard model cross section, can be significant and can depend on the energy of the neutrino.
In this article we consider the possibility of observing nonstandard Higgs bosons in the H -> Z A -> Z tau+ tau- channel. We present three benchmark scenarios in the NMSSM where H -> ZA is the dominant decay mode for one of the nonstandard Higgs bosons while the lightest CP-even Higgs is Standard Model like. Using the latest CMS multilepton analysis based on 7 TeV LHC data, we put limits on the signal cross-section, which constrain leptophilic scenarios. Projecting to future LHC analyses with improvements in background modeling, we show that with O(30) fb^{-1} of data, such a multilepton analy…
We reinterpret $W'$, $Z'$ and Higgs searches at the LHC in terms of a model with nonuniversal $V'$ couplings to fermions in order to gauge how well these searches can be applied outside the (simplified) scenarios for which they were optimized. In particular, we consider bounds from $V'$ searches in final states $ττ$, $eν$, $ll$ and $t b$, and discuss the impact of width effects. We then show that decays of the type $V' \rightarrow V h$ yield additional bounds on the heavy vector masses and, in the case of a discovery, provide an important probe of the heavy sector. Finally, we match the low en…
We study the decays of the lightest Higgs boson within the exceptional supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (E6SSM). The E6SSM predicts three families of Higgs-like doublets plus three SM singlets that carry U(1)_{N} charges. One family of Higgs-like doublets and one SM singlet develop vacuum expectation values. The fermionic partners of other Higgs-like fields and SM singlets form inert neutralino and chargino states. Two lightest inert neutralinos tend to be the lightest and next-to-lightest SUSY particles (LSP and NLSP). The considered model can account for the dark matter relic abundance i…
We consider nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with electrons arising from a new light spin-1 particle with mass of tens of GeV or lower and couplings to the neutrinos and electron. This boson is not necessarily a gauge boson and is assumed to have no mixing with standard-model gauge bosons. Adopting a model-independent approach, we study constraints on the flavor-conserving and -violating couplings of the boson with the leptons from a number of experimental data. Specifically, we take into account the (anti)neutrino-electron scattering and e^+ e^- -> nu nubar gamma measurements and keep ex…
The triplet scalars $(Δ=Δ^{++},Δ^{+},Δ^{0})$, utilized in the so-called Type-II seesaw model to explain the lightness of neutrinos, would generate nonstandard interactions (NSI) for neutrino propagating in matter. We investigate the prospects to probe these interactions in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We analyze the upper bounds that the proposed DUNE experiment might set on the nonstandard parameters and numerically derive upper bounds, as function of the lightest neutrino mass, on the ratio the mass $M_Δ$ of the triplet scalars and strength $|λ_ϕ|$ of the coupling $ϕϕΔ$ of…
It is possible to place constraints on non-Standard-Model gauge-boson self-couplings and other new physics by studying their one-loop contributions to precisely measured observables. We extend previous analyses which constrain such nonstandard couplings, and we present the results in a compact and transparent form. Particular attention is given to comparing results for the light-Higgs scenario, where nonstandard effects are parameterized by an effective Lagrangian with a linear realization of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, and the heavy-Higgs/strongly interacting scenario, described…
Pseudoscalar and charged Higgs bosons production in the processes $μ^+ μ^-\to P^0_i Z^0$, $μ^+μ^- \to H^{\pm}W^{\mp}$ within the models with several Higgs doublets and singlets is considered.
Theoretical overview on phenomenology of Higgs boson and SUSY Higgs boson at a future linear collider experiment is given as a Higgs and SUSY Higgs working group summary report for LCWS 2000.
We explore the possibility of distinguishing the SM-like MSSM Higgs boson from the SM Higgs boson via Higgs boson pair production at future muon collider. We study the behavior of the production cross section in SM and MSSM with Higgs boson mass for various choices of MSSM parameters tan βand m\sub A. We observe that at fixed CM energy, in the SM, the total cross section increases with the increase in Higgs boson mass whereas this trend is reversed for the MSSM case. The changes that occur for the MSSM case in comparison to the SM predictions are quantified in terms of the relative percentage …
The measured rate for D_s -> l nu decays, where l is a muon or tau, is larger than the standard model prediction, which relies on lattice QCD, at the 3.8 sigma level. We discuss how robust the theoretical prediction is, and we show that the discrepancy with experiment may be explained by a charged Higgs boson or a leptoquark.
The influence of the QCD structure of the weak bosons on the Higgs boson production in $e$-$p$ scattering is studied. The energy and Higgs boson mass dependence of the cross-section, following from the new contributions, is calculated.
Compared with the MSSM or the NMSSM with a low λ, λ-SUSY theory with a large λaround one has been deemed as a most natural realization of NMSSM. In this work, we treat the next-to-lightest CP-even Higgs boson as the SM-like Higgs boson in λ-SUSY and study the properties of the Higgs bosons and the pair production of the SM-like Higgs boson by considering various experiment constraints. We find that naturalness plays an important role in selecting the parameter space of λ-SUSY. In the most natural region of parameter space, the triple self coupling of the SM-like Higgs boson compared with its S…
The left-right twin Higgs(LRTH) model predicts the existence of three additional Higgs bosons: one neutral Higgs $ϕ^{0}$ and a pair of charged Higgs bosons $ϕ^{\pm}$. In this paper, we studied the production of a pair of charged and neutral Higgs bosons associated with standard model gauge boson $Z$ at the ILC, i.e., $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow Zϕ^{+}ϕ^{-}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow Zϕ^{0}ϕ^{0}$. We calculate the production rate and present the distributions of the various observables, such as, the distributions of the energy and the transverse momenta of final $Z$-boson and charged Higgs boson $ϕ…
Searches for charged Higgs bosons are an integral part of current and future investigations at the LHC. The LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group (LHCHXSWG) was created to provide cross sections, branching ratios, analysis strategies etc. for Higgs boson searches at the LHC. We briefly review progress and results for charged Higgs bosons in and for the LHCHXSWG.
The total cross section for Higgs boson production via the dominant gluon fusion mechanism including NLO [two-loop] QCD corrections can be calculated numerically with the program HIGLU. The QCD corrections are included for arbitrary Higgs and quark masses and increase the cross section at the LHC by up to a factor of 2. The source code HIGLU provides the evaluation of the production of the Standard Model [SM] Higgs boson as well as the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric extension [MSSM]. The program HDECAY determines the decay widths and branching ratios of the Higgs bosons wit…
We consider the two-Higgs-doublet model with explicit CP-violation, where the effective Higgs potential is not CP-invariant at the tree-level. Three neutral Higgs bosons of the model are the mixtures of CP-even and CP-odd bosons which exist in the CP-conserving limit of the theory. The mass spectrum and tree-level couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons to gauge bosons and fermions are significantly dependent on the parameters of the Higgs boson mixing matrix. We calculate the Higgs-gauge boson, Higgs-fermion, triple and quartic Higgs self-interactions in the MSSM with explicit CP-violation in t…
In the case of minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM), when the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass is less than the supersymmetry energy scale, the effective theory at the electroweak scale is a two-Higgs-doublet model. We diagonalize the mass matrix of the general two-Higgs-doublet model, expressing Higgs boson self-couplings in terms of two mixing angles and four Higgs boson masses, and derive in a compact form the complete set of Feynman rules, including quartic couplings in the Higgs sector, for the case of CP-violating potential. Some processes of double and triple Higgs…
We study an upper bound on masses of additional scalar bosons from the electroweak precision data and theoretical constraints such as perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability in the two Higgs doublet model taking account of recent Higgs boson search results. If the mass of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson is rather heavy and is outside the allowed region by the electroweak precision data, such a discrepancy should be compensated by contributions from the additional scalar bosons. We show the upper bound on masses of the additional scalar bosons to be about 2 $(1)$ TeV for the mass of the…
We consider the triple coupling of the Higgs boson in the context of the gauge-Higgs unification scenario. We show that the triple coupling of the Higgs boson in this scenario generically deviates from SM prediction since the Higgs potential in this scenario has a periodicity. We calculate the coupling in the five-dimensional $SU(3)$ x $U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs unification model and obtain 70% deviation from the SM prediction.
We explain the current excess seen at the Large Hadron Collider via the $gg\to H\toγγ$ channel in the search for a neutral Higgs boson in terms of both singly (marginally) and doubly (predominantly) charged Higgs bosons predicted by the Higgs Triplet Model.
We show that it is possible to construct models in which the width of the Higgs boson is arbitrary - either smaller or larger than a standard model Higgs boson of the same mass. There are no new fields into which the Higgs boson decays. Instead, the coupling of the Higgs boson to the gauge bosons is adjusted. We construct and analyze weakly--coupled models with arbitrary--width Higgs bosons to investigate the phenomenology one might find in a strongly interacting model. In any such model new physics must enter at a mass scale which decreases as the Higgs boson width is adjusted away from its s…
We consider the measurement of the trilinear couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model~(MSSM) at a high energy $e^+ e^-$ linear collider in the light of the discovery of a Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider~(LHC). We identify the state observed at the LHC with the lightest Higgs boson~($h^0$) of the MSSM, and impose the constraints following from this identification, as well as other experimental constraints on the MSSM parameter space. In order to measure trilinear neutral Higgs couplings, we consider different processes where the heavier Hi…
The Higgs boson mass problem is considered in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model for the case of the spontaneous CP violation. The renormalization group equations for the gauge, Yukawa and scalar coupling constants, the effective Higgs potential and lower experimental bounds on Higgs boson and chargino masses are analyzed. The restrictions on the Higgs boson masses are found.
We show that radiative corrections to the Higgs potential in supersymmetric theories with large tan beta generically lead to large differences in the light Higgs boson decay branching fractions compared to those of the standard model Higgs boson. In contrast, the light Higgs boson production rates are largely unaffected. We identify W h associated production followed by Higgs boson decays to photons or to leptons via W W* as potential experimental probes of these theories.
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production in vector-boson fusion processes interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method.
It is proposed to replace the Higgs boson of the standard model by a Lorentz- and gauge-invariant combination of SU(2) gauge bosons. A pair of Higgs bosons is identified with pairs of gauge bosons by setting their mass Lagrangians equal to each other. That immediately determines the mass of the composite Higgs boson. It becomes simply half of the vacuum expectation value of the standard Higgs boson, which matches the observed mass with tree-level accuracy (2%). The two parameters of the standard Higgs potential are replaced by five one-loop self-interactions of the SU(2) gauge bosons, derived …
The leading $m_H$ radiative correction to the Higgs decay width into a pair of weak vector bosons is calculated at the two--loop level, using the equivalence theorem in Landau gauge. The result indicates the breakdown of perturbation theory if the Higgs boson is heavier than $\sim 930$ GeV, in spite of the smallness of the one--loop radiative correction.
We study the decays of Higgs bosons to a lighter Higgs boson and a virtual gauge boson in the context of the non-supersymmetric Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model (2HDM). We consider the phenomenological impact at LEP2 and find that such decays, when open, may be dominant in regions of parameter space and thus affect current Higgs boson search techniques. Three-body decays would be a way of producing light neutral Higgs bosons which have so far escaped detection at LEP due to suppressed couplings to the $Z$, and are of particular importance in the 2HDM (Model I) which allows both a light fermiophobic Hig…
We demonstrate that Higgs boson production in fusion processes is accompanied by large azimuthal asymmetry. This asymmetry can be used to facilitate detection of Higgs boson events. We also demonstrate that the double Higgs boson production at threshold is a very appropriate process to test the existence of new physics at higher energy.
One loop contributions to the CP even-CP odd Higgs boson mixings arising from contributions due to exchange of a vectorlike multiplet are computed under the Higgs boson mass constraint. The vectorlike multiplet consists of a fourth generation of quarks and a mirror generation. This sector brings in new CP phases which can be large consistent with EDM constraints. In this work we compute the contributions from the exchange of quarks and mirror quarks $t_{4L}, t_{4R}, T_{L}, T_{R}$, and their scalar partners, the squarks and the mirror squarks. The effect of their contributions to the Higgs boso…
In the gauge-Higgs unification the 4D Higgs field becomes a part of the extra-dimensional component of the gauge potentials. In the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken through the Hosotani mechanism. The Higgs bosons become absolutely stable, and become the dark matter of the universe. The mass of the Higgs boson is determined from the WMAP data to be about 70 GeV.
Recently obtained NNLO exact corrections for Higgs and Pseudoscalar Higgs boson production in hadron colliders are compared with approximate ones. As shown before, it is found that there is a range of a proper variable where these corrections differ little.
The phenomenological model of an extra U(1) neutral gauge Z' boson coupled to heavy quarks is presented. In particular, we discuss the probability for a light $Z_{2}$ mass eigenstate decay into a bound state composed of heavy quarks via Higgs boson emission.
Many of the new physics models predicts a light Higgs boson similar to the Higgs boson of the Standard Model (SM) and also extra scalar bosons. Beyond the search channels for a SM Higgs boson, the future collider experiments will explore additional channels that are specific to extended Higgs sectors. We study the charged Higgs boson production within the framework of two Higgs doublet models (THDM) in the proton-proton collisions at the FCC-hh collider. With an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$ at very high energy frontier, we obtain a significant coverage of the parameter space and dist…
