We introduce a toy model that allows us to study the physical properties of a spin impurity coupled to the electrons in the superconducting island. We show that when the coupling of the spin is of the order of the superconducting gap two almost degenerate subgap states are formed. By computing the Berry phase that is associated with the superconducting phase rotations in this model, we prove that these subgap states are characterized by a different charge and demonstrate that the switching between these states has the same effect as quasiparticle poisoning (unpoisoning) of the island. We also show that an impurity coupled to both the island and the lead generates Josepshon current fluctuations.
We present a theoretical analysis of quasiparticle poisoning in Coulomb-blockaded Majorana fermion systems tunnel-coupled to normal-conducting leads. Taking into account finite-energy quasiparticles, we derive the effective low-energy theory and present a renormalization group analysis. We find qualitatively new effects when a quasiparticle state with very low energy is localized near a tunnel contact. For $M=2$ attached leads, such "dangerous" quasiparticle poisoning processes cause a spin $S=1/2$ single-channel Kondo effect, which can be detected through a characteristic zero-bias anomaly co…
We study the energy relaxation of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities. The renormalization of the exchange interaction of Kondo impurities coupled to conduction electrons is extended to the case of a nonequilibrium electron distribution, which is determined self-consistently from a Boltzmann equation with a collision term due to Kondo impurity mediated electron-electron scattering. The approach leads to predictions in quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)].
We measure transport through gold grain quantum dots fabricated using electromigration, with magnetic impurities in the leads. A Kondo interaction is observed between dot and leads, but the presence of magnetic impurities results in a gate-dependent zero-bias conductance peak that is split due to an RKKY interaction between the spin of the dot and the static spins of the impurities. A magnetic field restores the single Kondo peak in the case of an antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction. This system provides a new platform to study Kondo and RKKY interactions in metals at the level of a single spin…
Claims by Kroha and Zawadowski in cond-mat/0105026 on inadequate approximations and an incorrect statement in cond-mat/0102150 are shown to be based on oversimplified estimates and a false quotation.
We study a spin S=M/2--Kondo system coupled to electrons in an arbitrary nonequilibrium situation above Kondo temperature. Coupling to hot electrons leads to an increased inverse lifetime of pseudo particles, related to the Korringa width. This in turn is responsible for the increased inelastic relaxation rates of the electronic system. The rates are related to spin--spin correlation functions which are determined using a projection operator formalism. The results generalize recent findings for S=1/2--Kondo impurities which have been used to describe energy relaxation experiments in disordered…
We present results for Kondo impurities in nanoscopic systems. Using exact diagonalization in small clusters and Wilson's renormalization group we analyze an isolated system and a nanoscopic system weakly coupled to a macroscopic reservoir. In the latter case, new regimes not observed in macroscopic homogeneous systems are induced by the confinement of conduction electrons. These new confinement-induced regimes are very different depending on whether the Fermi energy coincides with the energy of a resonant state or lies between two quasi-bound states.
We present results for the spectral properties of Kondo impurities in nanoscopic systems. Using Wilson's renormalization group we analyze the frequency and temperature dependence of the impurity spectral density for impurities in small systems that are either isolated or in contact with a reservoir. We have performed a detailed analysis of the structure of the impurity spectral density for energies around the Fermi energy for different Fermi energies relative to the intrinsic structure of the local density of states. We show how the electron confinement energy scales introduce new features in …
We study the scanning tunneling microscopy response for magnetic atoms on open and structured surfaces using Wilson's renormalization group. We observe Fano resonances associated with Kondo resonances and interference effects. For a magnetic atom in a quantum corral coupled to the confined surface states, and experimentally relevant parameters, we observe a large confinement induced effect not present in the experiments. These results suggest that the Kondo screening is dominated by the bulk electrons rather than the surface ones.
We study the energy distribution function of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field. The system is described by a Boltzmann equation where the collision integral is determined by coupling to spin 1/2 impurities. We derive an effective coupling to a dissipative spin system which is valid well above Kondo temperature in equilibrium or for sufficiently smeared distribution functions in non-equilibrium. For low magnetic field an enhancement of energy relaxation is found whereas for larger magnetic fields the energy relaxation…
Combining ab initio calculations and effective models derived from them, we discuss the electronic structure of oxygen doped gold chains when one Au atom is replaced by any transition-metal atom of the $3d$ series. The effect of O doping is to bring extended Au $5d_{xz}$ and $5d_{yz}$ states to the Fermi level, which together with the Au states of zero angular momentum projection, lead to three possible channels for the screening of the magnetism of the impurity. For most 3d impurities the expected physics is similar to that of the underscreened Kondo model, with singular Fermi liquid behavior…
We study a generic topological Kondo insulator system by performing a mean-field theoretic calculation within the frame-work of slave-boson protocol. We assume infinite Hubbard-type interaction among the localized electrons. The difference between the bulk metallic and insulating phases of the insulator is in the sign of nearest neighbor hopping of localized electrons. The hopping amplitude is positive for the metallic and negative for the insulating phase. The surface metallicity together with bulk insulation, however, requires very strong f electron localization. Furthermore, we find that th…
We analyze two pairs of doublet states for the two Anderson impurity problem. We found that for short interimpurity distances they have a lower energy than the ferro triplet and the antiferro singlet. For medium to long distances between the impurities, the doublets also have a lower energy than the two decoupled Kondo-singlet state for most of the range of interest. The mechanism behind their energy gain is an coherence enhanced Kondo-like interaction.
Transition metal impurities will yield zero bias anomalies in the conductance of well contacted metallic carbon nanotubes, but Kondo temperatures and geometry dependences have not been anticipated so far. Applying the density functional plus numerical renormalization group approach of Lucignano \textit{et al.} to Co and Fe impurities in (4,4) and (8,8) nanotubes, we discover a huge difference of behaviour between outside versus inside adsorption of the impurity. The predicted Kondo temperatures and zero bias anomalies, tiny outside the nanotube, turn large and strongly radius dependent inside,…
We calculate the spectral densities for two impurities inside an elliptical quantum corral using exact diagonalization in the relevant Hilbert subspace and embedding into the rest of the system. For one impurity, the space and energy dependence of the change in differential conductance $Δ= dI/dV$ observed in the quantum mirage experiment is reproduced. In presence of another impurity, $Δ= dI/dV$ is very sensitive to the hybridization between impurity and bulk. The impurities are correlated ferromagnetically between them. A hopping $\gtrsim 0.15$ eV between impurities destroy the Kondo resonanc…
We study the tuning mechanisms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two lateral quantum dots in the Kondo regime. At zero magnetic field we observe the expected splitting of the Kondo resonance and measure the RKKY interaction strength J as a function of the asymmetry between the two Kondo temperatures. At finite magnetic fields a chiral coupling between the quantum dots is observed in the Kondo chessboard and we probe the presence of the exchange interaction by analyzing the Kondo temperature with magnetic field.
By introducing a normal self-energy to incorporate the effects of magnetic impurities, Kondo effects in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes are investigated within the Anderson model and Landauer formula. Magnetic impurities induce Kondo resonance and bring a valley of conductance unction near the Fermi level. The conductance of the nanotube increases with the temperature in the low temperature range. Thermoelectric power induced by magnetic impurities is gotten from Mott relation, and the calculations indicate its dependence on the temperature could interpret the experiment well.
We investigate the dephasing rate, 1/tau_phi, of weakly disordered electrons due to scattering from diluted dynamical impurities. Our previous result for the weak-localization dephasing rate is generalized from diluted Kondo impurities to arbitrary dynamical defects with typical energy transfer larger than 1/tau_phi. For magnetic impurities, we study the influence of magnetic fields on the dephasing of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and universal conductance fluctuations both analytically and using the numerical renormalization group. These results are compared to recent experiments.
Recently Affleck et al. derived the existence of Friedel oscillations in the presence of a Kondo impurity. They supported their analytic derivation by numerical calculations using Wilson's renormalization approach (NRG). In this paper the size of the Friedel oscillations is calculated with the FAIR method (Friedel Artificially Inserted Resonance) which has been recently developed. The results of NRG and FAIR are compared. The development of Friedel oscillations with a phase shift of pi/2 outside of the Kondo radius is confirmed.
In order to probe quantitatively the effect of Kondo impurities on energy exchange between electrons in metals, we have compared measurements on two silver wires with dilute magnetic impurities (manganese) introduced in one of them. The measurement of the temperature dependence of the electron phase coherence time on the wires provides an independent determination of the impurity concentration. Quantitative agreement on the energy exchange rate is found with a theory by Göppert et al. that accounts for Kondo scattering of electrons on spin-1/2 impurities.
We propose carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with magnetic impurities as a versatile platform to achieve unconventional Kondo physics, where the CNT bath is gapped by the spin-orbit interaction and surface curvature. While the strong-coupling phase is inaccessible for the special case of half-filled impurities in neutral armchair CNTs, the system in general can undergo quantum phase transitions to the Kondo ground state. The resultant position-specific phase diagrams are investigated upon variation of the CNT radius, chirality, and carrier doping, revealing several striking features, e.g., the existence…
We investigate the electrical conductivity of spin-polarized graphene in the presence of short-ranged magnetic scatterers within the relaxation time approximation and the semi-classical Boltzmann approach. Spin-flip scattering of the itinerant electrons from the majority spin sub-band into the minority one results in a minimum in the electrical resistivity at a finite temperature. While this behavior is reminiscent of the renowned Kondo effect, it has an entirely different origin and differs from the Kondo effect in several aspects. In particular, unlike the Kondo effect, this is a single part…
We investigate single Fe and Co atoms buried below a Cu(100) surface using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. By mapping the local density of states of the itinerant electrons at the surface, the Kondo resonance near the Fermi energy is analyzed. Probing bulk impurities in this well-defined scattering geometry allows separating the physics of the Kondo system and the measuring process. The line shape of the Kondo signature shows an oscillatory behavior as a function of depth of the impurity as well as a function of lateral distance. The oscillation period along the different dire…
We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger Liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic inter-impurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (non-helical) Luttinger Liquids.
A system of two exchange-coupled Kondo impurities in a magnetic field gives rise to a rich phase space hosting a multitude of correlated phenomena. Magnetic atoms on surfaces probed through scanning tunnelling microscopy provide an excellent platform to investigate coupled impurities, but typical high Kondo temperatures prevent field-dependent studies from being performed, rendering large parts of the phase space inaccessible. We present an integral study of pairs of Co atoms on insulating Cu2N/Cu(100), which each have a Kondo temperature of only 2.6 K. In order to cover the different regions …
We analyze the transport properties of two artificial magnetic impurities coupled togethervia a tunable RKKY interaction mediated by conduction electrons of a finite size one dimensional wire. We show that the sign of the RKKY interaction can be controlled by gating the wire. We investigate the interplay between finite size effects and RKKY interaction and found that the two artificial impurities start to interact each-other as soon as the Kondo screening cloud length becomes larger that the length of the wire. This should allow to give a lower experimental estimate of the Kondo screening clou…
We exploit the decoherence of electrons due to magnetic impurities, studied via weak localization, to resolve a longstanding question concerning the classic Kondo systems of Fe impurities in the noble metals gold and silver: which Kondo-type model yields a realistic description of the relevant multiple bands, spin and orbital degrees of freedom? Previous studies suggest a fully screened spin $S$ Kondo model, but the value of $S$ remained ambiguous. We perform density functional theory calculations that suggest $S = 3/2$. We also compare previous and new measurements of both the resistivity and…
The effect of magnetic impurities on the ballistic conductance of nanocontacts is, as suggested in recent work, amenable to ab initio study \cite{naturemat}. Our method proceeds via a conventional density functional calculation of spin and symmetry dependent electron scattering phase shifts, followed by the subsequent numerical renormalization group solution of Anderson models -- whose ingredients and parameters are chosen so as to reproduce these phase shifts. We apply this method to investigate the Kondo zero bias anomalies that would be caused in the ballistic conductance of perfect metalli…
Dynamical tunneling systems have been proposed earlier to display a two-channel Kondo effect, the orbital index of the particle playing the role of a pseudospin in the equivalent Kondo problem, and the spin being a silent channel index. However, as shown recently by Aleiner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2629 (2001)], the predicted two-channel Kondo behavior can never be observed in the weak coupling regime, where the tunneling induced splitting of the levels of the tunneling system always dominates the physics. Here we show that the above scenario changes completely if the conduction electrons …
We present measurements of the phase coherence time \tauphi in quasi one-dimensional Au/Fe Kondo wires and compare the temperature dependence of \tauphi with a recent theory of inelastic scattering from magnetic impurities (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 107204 (2004)). A very good agreement is obtained for temperatures down to 0.2 $T_K$. Below the Kondo temperature $T_K$, the inverse of the phase coherence time varies linearly with temperature over almost one decade in temperature.
We consider chiral electrons moving along the 1D helical edge of a 2D topological insulator and interacting with a disordered chain of Kondo impurities. Assuming the electron-spin couplings of random anisotropies, we map this system to the problem of the pinning of the charge density wave by the disordered potential. This mapping proves that arbitrary weak anisotropic disorder in coupling of chiral electrons with spin impurities leads to the Anderson localization of the edge states.
Local magnetic impurities arising from atomic vacancies in two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets are predicted to have a profound effect on charge transport due to resonant scattering, and provide a handle for enhancing thermoelectric properties through the Kondo effect. However, the effects of these impurities are often masked by external fluctuations and turbostratic interfaces, therefore, it is highly challenging to probe the correlation between magnetic impurities and thermoelectric parameters experimentally. In this work, we demonstrate that by placing Molybdenum Disulfide on a hexagonal Boron …
Localized magnetic moments have been predicted to develop in graphene samples with vacancies or adsorbates. The interplay between such magnetic impurities and graphene's Dirac quasiparticles leads to remarkable many-body phenomena, which have so far proved elusive to experimental efforts. In this article, we study the thermodynamic, spectral and transport signatures of quantum criticality and Kondo physics of a dilute ensemble of atomic impurities in graphene. We consider vacancies and adatoms that either break or preserve graphene's $C_{3v}$ and inversion symmetries. In a neutral graphene sam…
We have measured the phase decoherence rate, $τ_ϕ^{-1}$ of conduction electrons in disordered Ag wires implanted with 2 and 10 parts per million Fe impurities, by means of the weak localization magnetoresistance. The Kondo temperature of Fe in Ag, $T_K \approx 4$ K, is in the ideal temperature range to study the progressive screening of the Fe spins as the temperature $T$ falls below $T_K$. The contribution to $τ_ϕ^{-1}$ from the Fe impurities is clearly visible over the temperature range 40 mK -- 10 K. Below $T_K$, $τ_ϕ^{-1}$ falls rapidly until $T/T_K \approx 0.1$, in agreement with recent t…
We study the problem of underscreened Kondo physics in an interacting electronic system modeled by a Luttiger Liquid (LL). We find that the leading temperature dependence of thermodynamical quantities like the specific heat, spin susceptibility are Fermi Liquid like in nature. However, anomalous power law exponents are seen in the subleading terms. We also discuss possible realizations through single and double quantum dot configurations coupled to LL leads and its consequences for electronic transport. The leading low temperature transport behavior is seen to exhibit in general, non Fermi liq…
The localization length, $ξ$, in a 2--dimensional Anderson insulator depends on the electron spin scattering rate by magnetic impurities, $τ_s^{-1}$. For antiferromagnetic sign of the exchange, %constant, the time $τ_s$ is {\em itself a function of $ξ$}, due to the Kondo correlations. We demonstrate that the unitary regime of localization is impossible when the concentration of magnetic impurities, $n_{\tiny M}$, is smaller than a critical value, $n_c$. For $n_{\tiny M}>n_c$, the dependence of $ξ$ on the dimensionless conductance, $g$, is {\em reentrant}, crossing over to unitary, and back to …
We calculate the dephasing rate due to magnetic impurities in a weakly disordered metal as measured in a weak localization experiment. If the density n_S of magnetic impurities is sufficiently low, the dephasing rate 1/tau_phi is a universal function, 1/tau_phi = (n_S/nu) f(T/T_K), where T_K is the Kondo temperature and nu the density of states. We show that inelastic vertex corrections with a typical energy transfer Delta E are suppressed by powers of 1/(tau_phi Delta E) proportional to n_S. Therefore the dephasing rate can be calculated from the inelastic cross section proportional to pi nu …
We consider the transport properties in an applied magnetic field of the spin S=1/2 Kondo model with ferromagnetic exchange coupling to electronic reservoirs, a description relevant for the strong coupling limit of underscreened spin S=1 Kondo impurities. Because the ferromagnetic Kondo interaction is marginally irrelevant, perturbative methods should prove accurate down to low energies. For the purpose of this study, we use a combination of Majorana diagrammatic theory with Density Matrix Numerical Renormalization Group simulations. In the standard case of antiferromagnetic Kondo exchange, we…
We study the coherent properties of transmission through Kondo impurities, by considering an open Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot. We develop a novel many-body scattering theory which enables us to calculate the conductance through the dot, the transmission phase shift, and the normalized visibility, in terms of the single-particle T-matrix. For the single-channel Kondo effect, we find at temperatures much below the Kondo temperature $T_K$ that the transmission phase shift is π/2 without any corrections up to order (T/T_K)^2. The visibility has the form 1-(πT/T_K)^2. For the no…
We study the impact of dynamical correlations on the electronic structure and coherent transport properties of Cu nanocontacts hosting a single magnetic impurity (Ni,Co,Fe) in the contact region. The strong dynamical correlations of the impurity 3d-electrons are fully taken into account by combining density functional calculations with a dynamical treatment of the impurity 3d-shell in the one-crossing approximation. We find that dynamical correlations give rise to the Kondo effect and lead to Fano features in the coherent transport characteristics similar to those observed in related experimen…
The conductance of a tunnel point-contact in an STM-like geometry having a single defect placed below the surface is investigated theoretically. The effect of multiple electron scattering by the defect after reflections by the metal surface is taken into account. In the approximation of s-wave scattering the dependence of the conductance on the applied voltage and the position of the defect is obtained. The results are illustrated for a model s-wave phase shift describing Kondo-resonance scattering. We demonstrate that multiple electron scattering by the magnetic impurity plays a decisive role…
The anti-ferromagnetic coupling of a magnetic impurity carrying a spin with the conduction electrons spins of a host metal is the basic mechanism responsible for the increase of the resistance of an alloy such as Cu${}_{0.998}$Fe${}_{0.002}$ at low temperature, as originally suggested by Kondo . This coupling has emerged as a very generic property of localized electronic states coupled to a continuum . The possibility to design artificial controllable magnetic impurities in nanoscopic conductors has opened a path to study this many body phenomenon in unusual situations as compared to the initi…
We analyze the two Anderson impurity problem, in the strong Coulomb repulsion limit, by means of variational wave functions whose equations we solve analytically. We found two pairs of Doublet states, one odd and one even with respect to the midplane between the impurities. These Doublets make a significatively strong use of the hybridization terms of the Hamiltonian, and have a much larger Kondo-like correlation energy than a single impurity (the Kondo energy). Furthermore, these Doublets combine to form a Super-Singlet. This Super-Singlet makes use of the remaining hybridization probability …
We have carried out a generalized Schrieffer-Wolff transformation of an Anderson two-impurity Hamiltonian to study the low-energy spin interactions of the system. The second-order expansion yields the standard Kondo Hamiltonian for two impurities with additional scattering terms. At fouth-order, we get the well-known RKKY interaction. In addition, we also find an antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling and a correlated Kondo coupling between the two impurities.
This article summarizes our understanding of the Kondo effect in graphene, primarily from a theoretical perspective. We shall describe different ways to create magnetic moments in graphene, either by adatom deposition or via defects. For dilute moments, the theoretical description is in terms of effective Anderson or Kondo impurity models coupled to graphene's Dirac electrons. We shall discuss in detail the physics of these models, including their quantum phase transitions and the effect of carrier doping, and confront this with existing experimental data. Finally, we point out connections to …
The ground-state energy of a quantum impurity model can be calculated using the numerical renormalization group with a modified discretization scheme, with sufficient accuracy to reliably extract physical information about the system. The approach is applied to study binding of magnetic adsorbates modeled by the Anderson-Newns model for chemisorption on metal surfaces. The correlation energy is largest in the valence-fluctuation regime; in the strong-coupling (Kondo) regime the Kondo-singlet formation energy is found to be only a minor contribution. As an application of the method to more diff…
In this work we analyze the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum impurity (quantum dot or molecule) attached to ferromagnetic leads by using a hybrid numerical renormalization group-time-dependent density matrix renormalization group thermofield quench approach. For this, we study the bias dependence of the differential conductance through the system, which shows a finite zero-bias peak, characteristic of the Kondo resonance and reminiscent of the equilibrium local density of states. In the non-equilibrium settings, the resonance in the differential conductance is also found to decrease w…
We investigate a model of two Kondo impurities coupled via an Ising interaction. Exploiting the mapping to a generalized single-impurity Anderson model, we establish that the model has a singlet and a (pseudospin) doublet phase separated by a Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition. Based on a strong-coupling analysis and renormalization group arguments, we show that at this transition the conductance G through the system either displays a zero-bias anomaly, G ~ |V|^{-2(\sqrt{2}-1)}, or takes a universal value, G = e^2/(π\hbar) cos^2[π/(2\sqrt{2})], depending on the experimental setup. Cl…
We present phase coherence time measurements in quasi-one-dimensional Ag wires doped with Fe Kondo impurities of different concentrations $n_s$. Due to the relatively high Kondo temperature $T_{K}\approx 4.3K$ of this system, we are able to explore a temperature range from above $T_{K}$ down to below $0.01 T_{K}$. We show that the magnetic contribution to the dephasing rate $γ_m$ per impurity is described by a single, universal curve when plotted as a function of $(T/T_K)$. For $T>0.1 T_K$, the dephasing rate is remarkably well described by recent numerical results for spin $S=1/2$ impurities.…
Ballistic transport of helical edge modes in two-dimensional topological insulators is protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently it was pointed out [1] that coupling of non-interacting helical electrons to an array of randomly anisotropic Kondo impurities can lead to a spontaneous breaking of the symmetry and, thus, can remove this protection. We have analyzed effects of the interaction between the electrons using a combination of the functional and the Abelian bosonization approaches. The suppression of the ballistic transport turns out to be robust in a broad range of the interaction str…
Local density of states and quasiparticle interference phenomena of Co/Sb(111) were investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. A sharp peak observed near the Fermi energy is interpreted as a fingerprint of the conventional Kondo resonance with the Kondo temperature of K. Moreover, by identifying the interference wavevectors, only the scattering channels relating to backscattering confinements are observed for surfaces with and without the Co deposition. It reveals that the Kondo effect fully screens the magnetic impurities and thereby suppresses the backscattering of the topological surf…
The relation between the Kondo spin relaxation rate $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and the Kondo momentum relaxation rate $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is explored by using nonlocal spin valves with submicron copper channels that contain dilute iron impurities. A linear relation between $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is established under varying temperatures. However, under varying impurity concentrations, ${τ_{sK}}^{-1}$ remains nearly constant despite variation of $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ by a factor of 10. This surprising relation can be understood by considering spin relaxation through overlapping Kondo screenin…
We study triangular clusters of three spin-1/2 Kondo or Anderson impurities that are coupled to two conduction leads. In the case of Kondo impurities, the model takes the form of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ring with Kondo-like exchange coupling to continuum electrons. We show that this model exhibits many types of the behavior found in various simpler one and two-impurity models, thereby enabling the study of crossovers between a number of Fermi-liquid (FL) and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) fixed points. In particular, we explore a direct crossover between the two-impurity Kondo-model NFL fixed …
It is shown that in resistive nanowires out of equilibrium containing either single- or two-channel Kondo impurities the distribution function $f(E,U)$ obeys scaling behavior in terms of the quasiparticle energy $E$ and the bias voltage $U$. The numerically calculated $f(E,U)$ curves explain quantitatively recent experiments on Cu and Au nanowires. The systematics of the impurity concentration c_{imp} extracted from the comparison between theory and results on various Cu and Au samples strongly suggests that in these systems the scaling arises from magnetic Kondo impurities.
We investigate the influence of Kondo effect, namely, the nonperturbative effect induced by heavy impurities, on the chiral separation effect (CSE) in quark matter. We employ a simple effective model incorporating the Kondo condensate made of a light quark and a heavy quark, and compute the response function of axial current to the magnetic field in static limit and dynamical limit. As a result, we find that the Kondo effect catalyzes the CSE in both the limits, and particularly the CSE in dynamical limit can be enhanced by a factor of approximately three. Our findings clearly show that the pr…
We investigate two different types of relativistic Kondo effects, distinguished by heavy-impurity degrees of freedom, by focusing on the energy-momentum dispersion relations of the ground state with condensates composed of a light Dirac fermion and a nonrelativistic impurity fermion. Heavy fermion degrees of freedom are introduced in terms of two types of heavy-fermion effective theories, in other words, two heavy-fermion limits for the heavy Dirac fermion, which are known as the heavy-quark effective theories (HQETs) in high-energy physics. While the first one includes only the heavy-particle…
The effective interaction between magnetic impurities in metals that can lead to various magnetic ground states often competes with a tendency for electrons near impurities to screen the local moment (Kondo effect). The simplest system exhibiting the richness of this competition, the two-impurity Kondo system, is here realized experimentally in the form of two quantum dots coupled through an open conducting region. We demonstrate non-local spin control by suppressing and splitting Kondo resonances in one quantum dot by changing electron number and coupling of the other dot. Results suggest an …
A dilute concentration of magnetic impurities can dramatically affect the transport properties of an otherwise pure metal. This phenomenon, known as the Kondo effect, originates from the interactions of individual magnetic impurities with the conduction electrons. Nearly a decade ago, the Kondo effect was observed in a new system, in which the magnetic moment stems from a single unpaired spin in a lithographically defined quantum dot, or artificial atom. The discovery of the Kondo effect in artificial atoms spurred a revival in the study of Kondo physics, due in part to the unprecedented contr…
We present here the details of a method [A. B. Culver and N. Andrei, Phys. Rev. B 103, L201103 (2021)] for calculating the time-dependent many-body wavefunction that follows a local quench. We apply the method to the voltage-driven nonequilibrium Kondo model to find the exact time-evolving wavefunction following a quench where the dot is suddenly attached to the leads at $t=0$. The method, which does not use Bethe ansatz, also works in other quantum impurity models and may be of wider applicability. We show that the long-time limit (with the system size taken to infinity first) of the time-evo…
