We derive two related novel bounds on single-variable marginal probability distributions in factor graphs with discrete variables. The first method propagates bounds over a subtree of the factor graph rooted in the variable, and the second method propagates bounds over the self-avoiding walk tree starting at the variable. By construction, both methods not only bound the exact marginal probability distribution of a variable, but also its approximate Belief Propagation marginal (``belief''). Thus, apart from providing a practical means to calculate bounds on marginals, our contribution also lies in an increased understanding of the error made by Belief Propagation. Empirically, we show that our bounds often outperform existing bounds in terms of accuracy and/or computation time. We also show that our bounds can yield nontrivial results for medical diagnosis inference problems.
There are interesting extensions of the problem of determining a joint probability with known marginals. On the one hand, one may impose size constraints on the joint probabilities. On the other, one may impose additional constraints like the expected values of known random variables. If we think of the marginal probabilities as demands or supplies, and of the joint probability as the fraction of the supplies to be shipped from the production sites to the demand sites, instead of joint probabilities we can think of transportation policies. Clearly, fixing the cost of a transportation policy is…
This paper deals with the problem of measurable lifting modification for stochastic processes in its most general form and with the 'product lifting problem'. Solutions to the positive are reduced to the existence of marginals with respect to product probability spaces between the ordinary product and the product whose probability measure is the restriction of the skew product of the factor probabilities to the $σ$-algebra obtained by adjoing either the right or left nil-null sets to the ordinary product algebra. We discuss the problem of the existence of (strong) marginals.
Maxima of asymptotically Gaussian random fields and moderate deviation approximations to boundary crossing probabilities of sums of random variables with multidimensional indices
An observation space $\mathcal S$ is a family of probability distributions $\langle P_i: i\in I \rangle$ sharing a common sample space $Ω$ in a consistent way. A \emph{grounding} for $\mathcal S$ is a signed probability distribution $\mathcal P$ on $Ω$ yielding the correct marginal distribution $P_i$ for every $i$. A wide variety of quantum scenarios can be formalized as observation spaces. We describe all groundings for a number of quantum observation spaces. Our main technical result is a rigorous proof that Wigner's distribution is the unique signed probability distribution yielding the cor…
We derive new upper and lower bounds for probabilities that $r$ or at least $r$ from $n$ events occur. These bounds can turn to equalities. The method is discussed as well. It works for measurable space and measures with sign, too. We also discuss variants of the results for conditional probability of above events given $σ$-field. Taking expectations from both parts of inequalities for conditional probabilities can yield better bounds for unconditional ones.
Lundberg-type inequalities for ruin probabilities of non-homogeneous risk models are presented in this paper. By employing martingale method, the upper bounds of ruin probabilities are obtained for the general risk models under weak assumptions. In addition, several risk models, including the newly defined united risk model and quasi-periodic risk model with interest rate, are studied.
We obtain new lower and upper bounds for probabilities of unions of events. These bounds are sharp. They are stronger than earlier ones. General bounds maybe applied in arbitrary measurable spaces. We have improved the method that has been introduced in previous papers. We derive new generalizations of the first and second part of the Borel--Cantelli lemma.
We show bounds on tail probabilities for quadratic forms in sub-gaussian non-necessarily independent random variables. Our main tool will be estimates of the Luxemburg norms of such forms. This will allow us to formulate the above-mentioned bounds. As an example we give estimates of the excess loss in fixed design linear regression in dependent observations.
Motivated by an approximation problem from mathematical finance, we analyse the stability of the boundary crossing probability for the multivariate Brownian motion process, with respect to small changes of the boundary. Under broad assumptions on the nature of the boundary, including the Lipschitz condition (in a Hausdorff-type metric) on its time cross-sections, we obtain an analogue of the Borovkov and Novikov (2005) upper bound for the difference between boundary hitting probabilities for "close boundaries" in the univariate case. We also obtained upper bounds for the first boundary crossin…
We derive sharp lower bounds for L^p-functions on the n-dimensional unit hypercube in terms of their p-th marginal moments. Such bounds are the unique solutions of a system of constrained nonlinear integral equations depending on the marginals. For square-integrable functions, the bounds have an explicit expression in terms of the second marginals moments.
We discuss optimal constants in a recent result of Rudelson and Vershynin on marginal densities. We show that if $f$ is a probability density on $\R^n$ of the form $f(x)=\prod_{i=1}^n f_i(x_i)$, where each $f_i$ is a density on $\R$, say bounded by one, then the density of any marginal $π_E(f)$ is bounded by $2^{k/2}$, where $k$ is the dimension of $E$. The proof relies on an adaptation of Ball's approach to cube slicing, carried out for functions. Motivated by inequalities for dual affine quermassintegrals, we also prove an isoperimetric inequality for certain averages of the marginals of suc…
Consider critical site percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \geq 2$. We prove a lower bound of order $n^{- d^2}$ for point-to-point connection probabilities, where $n$ is the distance between the points. Most of the work in our proof concerns a `construction' which finally reduces the problem to a topological one. This is then solved by applying a topological fact, which follows from Brouwer's fixed point theorem. Our bound improves the lower bound with exponent $2 d (d-1)$, used by Cerf in 2015 to obtain an upper bound for the so-called two-arm probabilities. Apart from being of interest in …
While useful probability bounds for $n$ pairwise independent Bernoulli random variables adding up to at least an integer $k$ have been proposed in the literature, none of these bounds are tight in general. In this paper, we provide several results in this direction. Firstly, when $k = 1$, the tightest upper bound on the probability of the union of $n$ pairwise independent events is provided in closed-form for any input marginal probability vector $\mathbf{p} \in [0,1]^n$. To prove the result, we show the existence of a positively correlated Bernoulli random vector with transformed bivariate pr…
We study bond percolation for a family of infinite hyperbolic graphs. We relate percolation to the appearance of homology in finite versions of these graphs. As a consequence, we derive an upper bound on the critical probabilities of the infinite graphs.
The boundary crossing probability of a Poisson process with $n$ jumps is a fundamental quantity with numerous applications. We present a fast $O(n^2 \log n)$ algorithm to calculate this probability for arbitrary upper and lower boundaries.
We calculate bounds for orthant probabilities for the equicorrelated multivariate normal distribution and use these bounds to show the following: for degree $k>4$, the probability that a $k$-homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables attains a relative maximum on a vertex of the $n$-dimensional simplex tends to one as the dimension $n$ grows. The bounds we obtain for the orthant probabilities are tight up to $\log(n)$ factors.
