We obtain new lower and upper bounds for probabilities of unions of events. These bounds are sharp. They are stronger than earlier ones. General bounds maybe applied in arbitrary measurable spaces. We have improved the method that has been introduced in previous papers. We derive new generalizations of the first and second part of the Borel--Cantelli lemma.
The converse of the Borel-Cantelli Lemma states that if $\{A_i\}_{i=1}^\infty$ is a sequence of independent events such that $\sum P(A_i)=\infty$, then almost surely infinitely many of these events will occur. Erd\H os and Rényi proved that it is sufficient to weaken the condition of independence to pairwise independence. In this paper we study various conditions of weak independence that imply the conclusion of the converse of the Borel--Cantelli Lemma. We will determine the exact implicational relationship among these conditions.
Let (X k) be a strictly stationary sequence of random variables with values in some Polish space E and common marginal $μ$, and (A k) k>0 be a sequence of Borel sets in E. In this paper, we give some conditions on (X k) and (A k) under which the events {X k $\in$ A k } satisfy the Borel-Cantelli (or strong Borel-Cantelli) property. In particular we prove that, if $μ$(lim sup n A n) > 0, the Borel-Cantelli property holds for any absolutely regular sequence. In case where the A k 's are nested, we show, on some examples, that a rate of convergence of the mixing coefficients is needed. Finally we…
In this paper we present a quantitative analysis of the first and second Borel-Cantelli Lemmas and of two of their generalisations: the Erdős-Rényi Theorem, and the Kochen-Stone Theorem. We will see that the first three results have direct quantitative formulations, giving an explicit relationship between quantitative formulations of the assumptions and the conclusion. For the Kochen-Stone theorem, however, we can show that the numerical bounds of a direct quantitative formulation are not computable in general. Nonetheless, we obtain a quantitative formulation of the Kochen-Stone Theorem using…
We derive new variants of the quantitative Borel--Cantelli lemma and apply them to analysis of statistical properties for some dynamical systems. We consider intermittent maps of $(0,1]$ which have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures. In particular, we prove that every sequence of intervals with left endpoints uniformly separated from zero is the strong Borel--Cantelli sequence with respect to such map and invariant measure.
We discuss some conditional generalized Borel-Cantelli lemmas and investigate their quantitative versions following the ideas of Arthan and Oliva (arXiv: 2012.09942).
In this short note, we discuss the Barndorff-Nielsen lemma, which is a generalization of well-known Borel-Cantelli lemma. Although the result stated in the Barndorff-Nielsen lemma is correct, it does not follow from the argument proposed in the corresponding proof. In this note, we show this and offer an alternative proof of this lemma. We also propose a new generalization of Borel-Cantelli lemma.
We quantify the elementary Borel-Cantelli Lemma by higher moments of the overlap count statistic in terms of the weighted summability of the probabilities. Applications include mean deviation frequencies in the Strong Law and the Law of the Iterated Logarithm.
We study the strong Borel-Cantelli property both for events and for shifts on sequence spaces considering both a conventional and a nonconventional setups. Namely, under certain conditions on events $Γ_1,Γ_2,...$ we show that with probability one \[ \left(\sum_{n=1}^N\prod_{i=1}^\ell P(Γ_{q_i(n)})\right)^{-1}\sum_{n=1}^N\prod_{i=1}^\ell\mathbb{I}_{Γ_{q_i(n)}}\to 1\,\,\mbox{as}\,\, N\to\infty \] where $q_i(n),\, i=1,...,\ell$ are integer valued functions satisfying certain assumptions and $\mathbb{I}_Γ$ denotes the indicator of $Γ$. When $\ell=1$ (called the conventional setup) this convergence…
Let $(Ω, \mathcal{A}, μ)$ be a probability space. The classical Borel-Cantelli Lemma states that for any sequence of $μ$-measurable sets $E_i$ ($i=1,2,3,\dots$), if the sum of their measures converges then the corresponding $\limsup$ set $E_\infty$ is of measure zero. In general the converse statement is false. However, it is well known that the divergence counterpart is true under various additional 'independence' hypotheses. In this paper we revisit these hypotheses and establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for $E_\infty$ to have either positive or full measure.
In this paper we investigate the extent to which the Lovász Local Lemma (an important tool in probabilistic combinatorics) can be adapted for the measurable setting. In most applications, the Lovász Local Lemma is used to produce a function $f \colon X \to Y$ with certain properties, where $X$ is some underlying combinatorial structure and $Y$ is a (typically finite) set. Can this function $f$ be chosen to be Borel or $μ$-measurable for some probability Borel measure $μ$ on $X$ (assuming that $X$ is a standard Borel space)? In the positive direction, we prove that if the set of constraints put…
In this paper, we prove a Sanov-type large deviation principle for the sequence of empirical measures of vectors chosen uniformly at random from an Orlicz ball. From this level-$2$ large deviation result, in a combination with Gibbs conditioning, entropy maximization and an Orlicz version of the Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel lemma, we deduce a conditional limit theorem for high-dimensional Orlicz balls. Roughly speaking, the latter shows that if $V_1$ and $V_2$ are Orlicz functions, then random points in the $V_1$-Orlicz ball, conditioned on having a small $V_2$-Orlicz radius, look like an appropriat…
