If scale invariance is exact, unparticles are unlikely to be probed in colliders since there are stringent constraints from astrophysics and cosmology. However these constraints are inapplicable if scale invariance is broken at a scale mu >~ 1 GeV. The case 1 GeV <~ mu < M_Z is particularly interesting since it allows unparticles to be probed at and below the Z pole. We show that mu can naturally be in this range if only vector unparticles exist, and briefly remark on implications for Higgs phenomenology. We then obtain constraints on unparticle parameters from e+ e- -> mu+ mu- cross-section and forward-backward asymmetry data, and compare with the constraints from mono-photon production and the Z hadronic width.
We show that the requirement of gauge invariance is not enough to fix the form of interactions between unparticles and gauge fields, thus revealing a wide new class of gauged unparticle actions. Our approach also allows us to construct operators which create gauge invariant coloured unparticles. We discuss both their perturbative and non--perturbative properties.
We compute to next-to-leading order in QCD the tensor unparticle contribution to the diphoton production at the LHC, wherein the unparticle sector is a consequence of (a) scale invariance but not full conformal invariance and (b) conformal invariance. We use the semi-analytical two cutoff phase space slicing method to handle the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to the $p p \to γγX$ and show that our results are insensitive to the soft and collinear cutoffs. In order to avoid the contribution of the photons due to fragmentation, we employ the smooth cone isolation criterion. Significance of the QCD …
We discuss the physical interpretation of unparticles and review the constraints from cosmology. Unparticles may be understood in terms of confined states of a strongly-coupled scale-invariant theory, where scale-invariance implies that the confined states have continuous masses. This picture is consistent with the observation that unparticle operators can be represented in terms of continuous mass fields. Finite results in scattering processes are obtained by compensating the infinite number of unparticle final states with an infinitesimal coupling per unparticle. As a result, unparticles are…
Recently, conceptually new physics beyond the Standard Model has been proposed, where a hidden conformal sector provides ``unparticle'' which couples to the Standard Model sector through higher dimensional operators in low energy effective theory. Among several possibilities, we focus on operators involving unparticle, the Higgs doublet and the gauge bosons. Once the Higgs doublet develops the vacuum expectation value, the conformal symmetry is broken and as a result, the mixing between unparticle and Higgs boson emerges. We find that this mixing can cause sizable shifts for the couplings betw…
We investigate unparticle physics with supersymmetry (SUSY). The SUSY breaking effects due to the gravity mediation induce soft masses for the SUSY unparticles and hence break the conformal invariance. The unparticle physics observable in near future experiments is only consistent if the SUSY breaking effects from the hidden sector to the standard model sector are dominated by the gauge mediation, or if the SUSY breaking effects to the unparticle sector is sufficiently sequestered. We argue that the natural realization of the latter possibility is the conformal sequestering scenario.
We study supersymmetric QCD in the conformal window as a laboratory for unparticle physics, and analyze couplings between the unparticle sector and the Higgs sector. These couplings can lead to the unparticle sector being pushed away from its scale invariant fixed point. We show that this implies that low energy experiments will not be able to see unparticle physics, and the best hope of seeing unparticles is in high energy collider experiments such as the Tevatron and the LHC. We also demonstrate how the breaking of scale invariance could be observed at these experiments.
Unitarity, a powerful constraint on new physics, has not always been properly accounted for in the context of hidden sectors. Feng, Rajaraman and Tu have suggested that large (pb to nb) multi-photon or multi-lepton sugnals could be generated at the LHC through the three-point functions of a conformally-invariant hidden sector (an "unparticle" sector.) Because of the conformal invariance, the kinematic distributions are calculable. However, the cross-sections for many such processes grow rapidly with energy, and at some high scale, to preserve unitarity, conformal invariance must break down. Re…
The existence of an unparticle sector, weakly coupled to the standard model, would have a profound impact on supernova (SN) physics. Emission of energy into the unparticle sector from the core of SN1987A would have significantly shortened the observed neutrino burst. The unparticle interaction with nucleons, neutrinos, electrons and muons is constrained to be so weak that it is unlikely to provide any missing-energy signature at colliders. One important exception are models where scale invariance in the hidden sector is broken by the Higgs vacuum expectation value. In this case the SN emission…

Once the Higgs develops the vacuum expectation value (VEV), the conformal symmetry is broken and as a result, the mixing between the unparticle and the Higgs boson emerges. In this paper, we consider the unparticl…

Interest has been directed recently towards low energy implications of a non-trivial conformal sector of an effective field theory with an IR fixed point (Λ), manifest in terms of ``unparticles'' with bizarre properties. We re-examine the implications of the limits on decay lifetimes of solar neutrinos for unparticle interactions. We study in detail the fundamental parameter space (Λ, M) and derive bounds on the energy scale M characterizing the new physics. We work strictly within the framework where conformal invariance holds down to low energies. We first assume that couplings of the unpart…
We study and analyze the recent observations of the top pair production $σ(p\bar p\to t \bar t)$ at TeVatron through flavor conserving and flavor violating channels ${\it via}$ vector and tensor unparticles. The unparticle sector is considered with the possibility of being a color singlet or octet. The modified unparticle propagator is used to investigate the contribution of these unparticles to the observed $A_{FB}^{t\bar t}$ (forward backward asymmetry in top pair production) and the spin correlation at TeVatron. We have also studied the impact of the flavor violating couplings of unparticle…
Coupling the scale invariant unparticle sector to flavour physics and assuming that it remains scale invariant we investigate its consequences in heavy flavour physics. A drastic feature of unparticle physics is an unusual phase leading to novel CP violating phenomena. We consider the CP asymmetry in the leptonic decay B^+ -> tau^+ nu and the hadronic decay B_d -> D^+D^-, taking into account constraints of branching ratios and time dependent CP asymmetries. Generic plots are shown and it turns out that there exist parameters for which the CP violation is maximal. A prediction of a large CP asy…
We present the phenomenology of antisymmetric rank-2 tensor unparticle operator ${\cal O}_{\cal U,A}^{μν}$ with scaling dimension $d_{\cal U}$. We consider the physical effects of operator $O_{\cal U,A}^{μν}$ in $Z^0$ boson invisible decays $Z^0 \to {\cal U}$, $Z^0 \to b \bar{b}$ channel, the electroweak precision observable $S$ parameter, and the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment. The $Z^0$ boson invisible decay gives a very stringent constraint in the $(Λ_{\cal U}, M_{\cal U})$ plane, and only small $r \equiv Λ_{\cal U} / M_{\cal U} \lesssim 0.1$ is favored, when $Λ_{\cal U}$ is order of…
The first model of Foot, Kobakhidze and Volkas described in their work in arXiv:0704.1165 [hep-ph] is a tailored version of our model on broken scale invariance in the standard model presented in hep-th/0403039.
We introduce Weyl's scale invariance as an additional local symmetry in the standard model of electroweak interactions. An inevitable consequence is the introduction of general relativity coupled to scalar fields a la Dirac and an additional vector particle we call the Weylon. We show that once Weyl's scale invariance is broken, the phenomenon (a) generates Newton's gravitational constant G_N and (b) triggers spontaneous symmetry breaking in the normal manner resulting in masses for the conventional fermions and bosons. The scale at which Weyl's scale symmetry breaks is of order Planck mass. I…
We point out that it is possible to associate the electroweak Higgs boson with the pseudo-Goldstone boson of broken scale invariance, thus resolving the hierarchy problem in a technically natural way. We illustrate this idea with two specific gauge models. Besides being consistent with all currently available experimental data, both models maintain the predictive power of the standard model, since the first model has only one additional parameter beyond the standard model, and the second has the same number of free parameters as the standard model.
We investigate five-dimensional braneworld setups with broken Lorentz invariance continuing the developments of our previous paper (arXiv:0712.1136), where a family of static self-tuning braneworld solutions was found. We show that several known braneworld models can be embedded into this family. Then we give a qualitative analysis of spectra of field fluctuations in backgrounds with broken Lorentz invariance. We also elaborate on one particular model and study spectra of scalar and spinor fields in it. It turns out that the spectra we have found possess very peculiar and unexpected properties…
Here we show that local scale invariance -- invariance under Weyl rescalings -- may safely coexist with broken electroweak symmetry if assume the Weyl geometric theory to govern the affine structure of spacetime. We find that within the resulting scale invariant theory of gravity cosmological inflation is enough to explain the large hierarchy between the Higgs and Planck masses.
Conformal invariance is spontaneously broken in many physical systems leading to the appearance of a single massless Goldstone mode in the spectrum, the dilaton. The dilaton soft limit is shown to generically encode the action of both the dilatation and the special conformal transformation on observables. For massive on-shell legs these take the form of sub-leading soft theorems. At loop level, we show how anomalous dimensions for coupling constants and fields can be included. We illustrate the general analysis with a variety of formal and phenomenological applications.
We argue that scale invariance is not anomalous in quantum field theory, provided it is broken cosmologically. We consider a locally scale invariant extension of the Standard Model of particle physics and argue that it fits both the particle and cosmological observations. The model is scale invariant both classically and quantum mechanically. The scale invariance is broken cosmologically producing all the dimensionful parameters. The cosmological constant or dark energy is a prediction of the theory and can be calculated systematically order by order in perturbation theory. It is expected to b…
We study gravity coupled to a cosmological constant and a scale but not conformally invariant sector. In Minkowski vacuum, scale invariance is spontaneously broken. We consider small fluctuations around the Minkowski vacuum. At the linearised level we find that the trace of metric perturbations receives a positive or negative mass squared contribution. However, only for the Fierz-Pauli combination the theory is free of ghosts. The mass term for the trace of metric perturbations can be cancelled by explicitly breaking scale invariance. This reintroduces fine-tuning. Models based on four form fi…
We construct a model of inflation based on a low-energy effective theory of spontaneously broken global scale invariance. This provides a shift symmetry that protects the inflaton potential from quantum corrections. Since the underlying scale invariance is non-compact, arbitrarily large inflaton field displacements are readily allowed in the low-energy effective theory. A weak breaking of scale invariance by almost marginal operators provides a non-trivial inflaton minimum, which sets and stabilizes the final low-energy value of the Planck scale. The underlying scale invariance ensures that th…
In this paper, we show the existence of static and rotating universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with the broken Lorentz invariance. We pay particular attention on the ultraviolet regime, and show that universal horizons and black holes exist not only in low energy scales but also in the UV scales. This is realized by presenting various static and stationary exact solutions of the full theory of the projectable Hořava gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry in (2+1)-dimensions, which, by construction, is power-counting renormalizable.
We determine the gauge invariance classes of tree level Feynman diagrams in spontaneously broken gauge theories, providing a proof for the formalism of gauge and flavor flips. We find new gauge invariance classes in theories with a nonlinearly realized scalar sector. In unitarity gauge, the same gauge invariance classes correspond to a decomposition of the scattering amplitude into pieces that satisfy the relevant Ward Identities individually. In theories with a linear realized scalar sector in R_ξgauge, no additional nontrivial gauge invariance classes exist compared to the unbroken case.
Classical conformal invariance of QCD in the chiral limit is broken explicitly by scale anomaly. As a result, the lightest scalar particle (scalar glueball, or dilaton) in QCD is not light, and cannot be described as a Goldstone boson. Nevertheless basing on an effective low-energy theory of broken scale invariance we argue that inside the hadrons the non-perturbative interactions of gluon fields result in the emergence of a massless dilaton excitation (which we call the "scalaron"). We demonstrate that our effective theory of broken scale invariance leads to confinement. This theory allows a …
We propose a possible explanation of the kinematical dependence of the central production of the scalar glueball candidate observed recently by the WA91 and WA102 Collaborations, and discussed by Close and Kirk, in the context of the broken scale invariance of QCD. The dependences of glueball production on the transverse momenta and azimuthal angles of the final-state protons may be related to the structure of the trace anomaly in QCD.
It is shown that in the quadratic gravity based on Weyl's conformal geometry, the Planck mass scale can be generated from quantum effects of the gravitational field and the Weyl gauge field via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism where a local scale symmetry, that is, conformal symmetry, is broken. At the same time, the Weyl gauge field acquires mass less than the Planck mass by absorbing the dilaton. The shape of the effective potential is almost flat owing to a gravitational character and high symmetries, so our model would provide an attractive model for the inflationary universe. We also presen…
A new scalar-tensor theory of gravity induced by dynamically broken scale invariance is proposed, and its cosmological implications are discussed. It is found that the model admits an inflation via the Hawking-Moss bubbling, but the inflation rate remains undetermined due to the strong gravity limit. In light of this, scale-invariant metric perturbations having a dominant tensor component can be generated without slow-rollover. In addition, the deviation from the standard hot big-bang is vanishingly small after inflation.
We explore the possibility that scale symmetry is a quantum symmetry that is broken only spontaneously and apply this idea to the Standard Model (SM). We compute the quantum corrections to the potential of the higgs field ($ϕ$) in the classically scale invariant version of the SM ($m_ϕ=0$ at tree level) extended by the dilaton ($σ$). The tree-level potential of $ϕ$ and $σ$, dictated by scale invariance, may contain non-polynomial effective operators, e.g. $ϕ^6/σ^2$, $ϕ^8/σ^4$, $ϕ^{10}/σ^6$, etc. The one-loop scalar potential is scale invariant, since the loop calculations manifestly preserve t…

Employing the operator algebra of the conformal group and the conformal Ward identities, we derive the constraints for the anomalies of dilatation and special conformal transformations of the local twist-2 operators in Quantum Chromodynamics. We calculate these anomalies in the leading order of perturbation theory in the minimal subtraction scheme. From the conformal consistency relation we derive then the off-diagonal part of the anomalous dimension matrix of the conformally covariant operators in the two-loop approximation of the coupling constant in terms of these quantities. We deduce corr…

We consider 5D brane world models with broken global 4D Poincar\a'{e} invariance (4D part of the spacetime metric is not conformal to the Minkowski spacetime). The bulk is filled with the negative cosmological constant and may contain a perfect fluid. In the case of empty bulk (the perfect fluid is absent), it is shown that one brane solution always has either a physical or a coordinate singularity in the bulk. We cut off these singularities in the case of compact two brane model and obtain regular exact solutions for both 4D Poincar\a'{e} broken and restored invariance. When the perfect fluid…
We consider a generic scale invariant scalar quantum field theory and its symmetry breakdown. Based on the dimension counting identity, we give a concise proof that dilaton is exactly massless at the classical level if scale invariance is broken spontaneously. On the other hand, on the basis of the generalized dimension counting identity, we prove that the dilaton becomes massive at the quantum level if scale invariance is explicitly broken by quantum anomaly. It is pointed out that a subtlety occurs when scale invariance is spontaneously broken through a scale invariant regularization method …
We present a model for describing nuclear matter at finite density based on quarks interacting with chiral fields, sigma and pion. The chiral Lagrangian also includes a logarithmic potential, associated with the breaking of scale invariance. We provide results for the soliton in vacuum and at finite density, using the Wigner-Seitz approximation. We show that the model can reach higher densities respect to the Linear-sigma model, up to approximately 3 rho_0 for m_sigma=1200 MeV.
In this paper, we revisit the issue of static hairs of black holes in gravitational theories with broken Lorentz invariance in the case that the speed $c_ϕ$ of the khronon field becomes infinitely large, $c_ϕ = \infty$, for which the sound horizon of the khronon field coincides with the universal horizon, and the boundary conditions at the sound horizon reduce to those given normally at the universal horizons. As a result, less boundary conditions are present in this extreme case in comparison with the case $c_ϕ = $ finite. Then, it would be expected that static hairs might exist. However, we …
We present a model for describing nuclear matter at finite density based on quarks interacting with chiral fields, σand πand with vector mesons introduced as massive gauge fields. The chiral Lagrangian includes a logarithmic potential, associated with the breaking of scale invariance. We provide results for the soliton in vacuum and at finite density, using the Wigner-Seitz approximation. We show that the model can reach higher densities respect to the linear-σmodel and that the introduction of vector mesons allows to obtain saturation. This result was never obtained before in similar approach…
The original Abelian U(1) Higgs model in flat spacetime is enlarged by the addition of one real scalar with a particular potential. It is then shown that, while maintaining the original masses of the vector boson and Higgs scalar, there exists a time-dependent homogeneous solution of the classical field equations, which corresponds to dynamical breaking of Lorentz invariance (DBLI). The same DBLI mechanism holds for the standard model enlarged by the addition of a real isosinglet scalar with an appropriate potential. The resulting DBLI with an assumed TeV energy scale would manifest itself pri…
A relativistic theory for neutrino superluminality is presented (in principle, the same mechanism applies also to other fermions). The theory involves the standard-model particles and one additional heavy sterile neutrino with an energy-scale close to or above the electroweak one, all particles propagating in the usual 3+1 spacetime dimensions. Lorentz violation results from spontaneous symmetry breaking in the sterile-neutrino sector. The theory tries, as far as possible, to be consistent with the existing experimental data from neutrino physics and to keep the number of assumptions minimal. …
We simulate the creation and evolution of non-boost-invariant Glasma in the early stages of heavy ion collisions within the color glass condensate framework. This is accomplished by extending the McLerran-Venugopalan model to include a parameter for the Lorentz-contracted but finite width of the nucleus in the beam direction. We determine the rapidity profile of the Glasma energy density, which shows deviations from the boost-invariant result. Varying the parameters both broad and narrow profiles can be produced. We compare our results to experimental data from RHIC and find surprising agreeme…
The emergent gauge theories are reconsidered in light of supersymmetry and an appropriate emergence conjecture is formulated. Accordingly, it might be expected that only global symmetries are fundamental symmetries of Nature, whereas local symmetries and associated massless gauge fields could solely emerge due to spontaneous breaking of underlying spacetime symmetries involved, such as relativistic invariance and supersymmetry. We further argue that this breaking, taken in the form of the nonlinear sigma-model type pattern for vector fields or superfields, puts essential restrictions on geomet…
Classical scale invariance represents a promising framework for model building beyond the Standard Model. However, once coupled to gravity, any scale-invariant microscopic model requires an explanation for the origin of the Planck mass. In this paper, we provide a minimal example for such a mechanism and show how the Planck mass can be dynamically generated in a strongly coupled gauge sector. We consider the case of hidden SU(N_c) gauge interactions that link the Planck mass to the condensation of a scalar bilinear operator that is nonminimally coupled to curvature. The effective theory at ene…
Scale invariance may be a classical symmetry which is broken radiatively. This provides a simple way to stabilize the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking against radiative corrections. The simplest phenomenologically successful model of this type involves the addition of one real scalar field to the standard model. In this minimal model the electroweak Higgs can be interpreted as the pseudo-Goldstone boson of broken scale invariance. We study the possible origin of neutrino mass in such models, both at tree-level and radiatively.
We study the scalar sector of the Two Measures Field Theory (TMT) model in the context of cosmological dynamics. The scalar sector includes the inflaton ϕand the Higgs \upsilon fields. The model possesses gauge and scale invariance. The latter is spontaneously broken due to intrinsic features of the TMT dynamics. In the model with the inflaton ϕalone, in different regions of the parameter space the following different effects can take place without fine tuning of the parameters and initial conditions: a) Possibility of resolution of the old cosmological constant problem: this is done in a cons…
We consider the lightlike spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (SLIV) appearing through the zero "length-fixing" constraint put on a gauge vector field, $A_{μ}A^{μ}=0$, and discuss its physical consequences in the framework of a conventional QED and beyond. Again, as in the timelike and spacelike SLIV cases, $A_{μ}A^{μ}=\pm M_{A}^{2}$ ($M_{A}$ is a scale of SLIV), while this constraint leads to an emergence of the Nambu-Goldstone modes collected in physical photon, the SLIV itself is still left unobservable unless gauge invariance in the theory is broken. At the same time, a crucial differ…
Field theories with global continuous symmetries may admit configurations in which time translation invariance is broken by the movement of homogeneous background fields evolving along the flat directions implied by the symmetries. In this context, the field fluctuations along the broken symmetry are well parametrized by a Goldstone boson field that may non-trivially interact with other fields present in the theory. These interactions violate Lorentz invariance as a result of the broken time translation invariance of the background, producing a mixing between the field content and the particle…
The presence of a light vector field coupled to a scalar field during inflation makes a distinct prediction: the observed correlation functions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) become statistically anisotropic. We study the implications of the current bound on statistical anisotropy derived from the Planck 2013 CMB temperature data for such a model. The previous calculations based on the attractor solution indicate that the magnitude of anisotropy in the power spectrum is proportional to $N^2$, where $N$ is the number of $e$-folds of inflation counted from the end of inflation. In this…
We use the large N approximation to find an exotic phase of a cold, two-dimensional, N-component Fermi gas which exhibits dynamically broken approximate scale symmetry. We identify a particular weakly damped collective excitation as the dilaton, the pseudo-Goldstone boson associated with the broken approximate scale symmetry. We argue that the symmetry breaking phase is stable for a range of parameters of the theory and there is a fluctuation induced first order quantum phase transition between the normal and the scale symmetry breaking phases which can be driven by tuning the chemical potenti…
In this paper, we follow a `bottom-up' AdS/QCD approach to holographically probe the dynamics of a moving $q\bar{q}$ pair inside a strongly coupled plasma at the boundary. We consider a deformed AdS-Reissner Nordström metric in the bulk in order to introduce nonconformality and finite quark density in the dual field theory. By boosting the gravity solution in a specific direction we consider two extreme cases of orientation, parallel and perpendicular, for the Wilson loop which in turn fixes the relative position of the $q\bar{q}$ pair with respect to the direction of boost in the plasma. By u…
The observational consequences of certain broken symmetries in a thermalised quark gluon plasma are elucidated. The signature under study is the spectrum of dileptons radiating from the plasma, through gluon fusion. Being a pure medium effect, this channel is non-vanishing only in plasmas with explicitly broken charge conjugation invariance. The emission rates are also sensitive to rotational invariance through the constraints imposed by Yang's theorem. This theorem is interpreted in the medium via the destructive interference between various multiple scattering diagrams obtained in the specta…
We generalize the coset construction of Callan, Coleman, Wess and Zumino to theories in which the Lorentz group is spontaneously broken down to one of its subgroups. This allows us to write down the most general low-energy effective Lagrangian in which Lorentz invariance is non-linearly realized, and to explore the consequences of broken Lorentz symmetry without having to make any assumptions about the mechanism that triggers the breaking. We carry out the construction both in flat space, in which the Lorentz group is a global spacetime symmetry, and in a generally covariant theory, in which t…
We study the relationship between the strength of fifth forces and the origin of scale breaking in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. We start with a light scalar field that is conformally coupled to a toy SM matter sector through a Weyl rescaling of the metric. After appropriately normalizing the fields, the conformally coupled scalar only interacts directly with the would-be Higgs field through kinetic-mixing and Higgs-portal terms. Thus, for the first time, we describe the equivalence of conformally coupled scalar-tensor modifications of gravity and Higgs-portal theories, and we f…
In holographic models of cosmology based on the (A)dS/CFT correspondence, conformal symmetry is implicit in the dual description of the Universe. Generically, however, one cannot expect the (broken) conformal invariance in the cosmic fluctuations as only the scale invariance is manifest in experiments. Also, in order for the prediction of the holographic models to make sense, the conformal symmetry needs to be broken as the scalar mode of the metric fluctuations becomes pure gauge in the conformal limit. We discuss the improvement ambiguity of the energy-momentum tensor in this context and con…
