We study the Collins effect in the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering. From the detailed analysis of one-gluon and two-gluon exchange diagrams contributions, the Collins function is found the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e^+e^- annihilations. The eikonal propagators in these diagrams do not contribute to the phase needed for the Collins-type single spin asymmetry, and the universality is derived as a result of the Ward identity. We argue that this conclusion depends on the momentum flow of the exchanged gluon and the kinematic constraints in the fragmentation process, and is generic and model-independent.
We study the Collins mechanism for the single transverse spin asymmetry in the collinear factorization approach. The correspondent twist-three fragmentation function is identified. We show that the Collins function calculated in this approach is universal. We further examine its contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry of semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering and demonstrate that the transverse momentum dependent and twist-three collinear approaches are consistent in the intermediate transverse momentum region where both apply.
We study the Collins mechanism contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry in inclusive hadron production in pp scattering p^{\uparrow}p\to πX from the leading jet fragmentation. The azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadron in the jet leads to a single spin asymmetry for the produced hadron in the Lab frame. The effect is evaluated in a transverse momentum dependent model that takes into account the transverse momentum dependence in the fragmentation process. We find the asymmetry is comparable in size to the experimental observation at RHIC at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV.
We calculate the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in proton-proton collisions. We generate the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compare our results with the Fermilab E704 data from polarized proton-proton collisions at 200 GeV. We show that the transversely polarized quark densities at high Bjorken x strongly differ from these predicted by the SU(6) proton wave function.
We apply the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism to investigate the transverse single spin dependent Collins asymmetry with a $\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_s)$ modulation in the semi-inclusive production of Kaon meson in deep inelastic scattering process. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolutions of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ of the target proton and the Collins function of the Kaon in the final state. We adopt the available parametrization of $h_1(x)$ as well as the recent extracted result for the Kaon Collins function. To perform the transverse momentum dependent …
The much debated issue of the transverse single spin asymmetry A_N observed in the inclusive large P_T production of a single hadron in pp interactions, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X, is considered in a TMD factorization scheme. A previous result [1,2] stating that the maximum contribution of the Collins effect is strongly suppressed, is revisited, correcting a numerical error. New estimates are given, adopting the Collins functions recently extracted from SIDIS and e+e- data, and phenomenological consequences are discussed.
We calculated the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in the fragmentation region of transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. We generated the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compared our results to the presently available experimental data. We obtained a qualitative agreement with the data after assuming that the transverse polarizations of the $u$ and the $d$ quarks in the proton are +1 and -1, respectively, at x_B = 1.
We present model predictions of Collins asymmetries for proton in the SIDIS process for $π^+$ and $π^-$ channels. We use a recently proposed light-front quark-diquark model for proton with the light-front wave functions predicted in soft-wall AdS/QCD. The model predictions are compared with the HERMES and COMPASS data.
The parity-conserving single-spin beam asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering is induced by an absorptive part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. We demonstrate that this asymmetry has logarithmic and double-logarithmic enhancement due to contributions of hard collinear quasi-real photons. An optical theorem is used to evaluate the asymmetry in terms of the total photoproduction cross section on the proton, predicting its magnitude at a few parts per million for high electon beam energies and small scattering angles. At fixed 4-momentum transfers, the asymmetry is rising logarithmi…
We consider QCD radiative corrections to vector-boson production in hadron collisions. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) result of the hard-collinear coefficient function for the all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momenta. The coefficient function controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The same coefficient function is used in applications of the subtraction method to perform fully-exclusive perturbative calculations up to NNLO.
An approximately analysis study of the collinear approach for $t\overline{t}$ production at the Future Circular Collider hadron-electron (FCC-he) and the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is performed. To study heavy quark production processes, the collinear generalized double asymptotic scaling (DAS) approach in a wide rang of $Q^{2}$ is used. The reduced cross sections for top quark pair production at the FCC-he (for $Q^{2}{\geq}m^{2}_{t}$) and LHeC (for $Q^{2}{\leq}m^{2}_{t}$) center-of-mass energies at the high inelasticity are derived. These results may be considering for both the fut…
We consider the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson through the gluon fusion mechanism in hadron collisions. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD result of the hard-collinear coefficient function for the all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momentum. The coefficient function controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The same coefficient function is used in applications of the subtraction method to perform fully-exclusive perturbative calculations up to NNL…
We investigate the nucleon tensor charge from current experiments by a combined analysis of the Collins asymmetries in two hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering processes. The transverse momentum dependent evolution is taken into account, for the first time, in the global fit of the Collins fragmentation functions and the quark transversity distributions at the approximate next-to-leading logarithmic order. We obtain the nucleon tensor charge contribution from up and down quarks as $δu=+0.30^{+0.12}_{-0.08}$ and $δd=-0.20_…
We study the scattering of a single parton state with a multi-parton state to derive the complete results of perturbative coefficient functions at leading order, which appear in the collinear factorization for Single transverse-Spin Asymmetry(SSA) in Drell-Yan processes with a transversely polarized hadron in the initial state. We find that the factorization formula of SSA contains hard-pole-, soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions. It is interesting to note that the leading order perturbative coefficient functions of soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions are extracted…
I present NNNLO collinear and soft gluon corrections for Higgs production via the process b bbar -> H. I show that the collinear corrections dominate and contribute large enhancements to the cross section at both the Tevatron and the LHC.
We study the contribution of the twist-3 fragmentation function to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in SIDIS within the framework of the collinear factorization. Using the Ward-Takahashi identity in QCD, we establish the collinear twist-3 formalism in the Feynman gauge to calculate its non-pole contribution to the asymmetry.
We study the single transverse spin asymmetry of prompt photon production in high energy proton-proton scattering. We include the contributions from both the direct and fragmentation photons. While the asymmetry for direct photon production receives only the Sivers type of contribution, the asymmetry for fragmentation photons receives both the Sivers and Collins types of contributions. We make a model calculation for quark-to-photon Collins function, which is then used to estimate the Collins asymmetry for fragmentation photons. We find that the Collins asymmetry for fragmentation photons is v…
We present our recent analysis on the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in inclusive pion and direct-photon production in pp collisions for RHIC kinematics. The analysis includes the contributions from twist-3 quark-gluon-quark correlations in the proton and twist-3 fragmentation effects for the pion. Some of the functions appearing in the formula for the SSA, such as the soft-gluon-pole Qiu-Sterman function, the nucleon transversity, and the Collins function were fixed consistently with the SSA data in semi-inclusive DIS and in e+e- annihilation, so that our analysis is free from the sig…
Contrary to the conventional belief, time integrated asymmetry are measurable in selected final states in the neutral $B$ system at symmetric $e^+e^-$ colliders. They occur due to the interplay of weak and strong phases of two different amplitudes in addition to the $B^0 - \bar B^0$ mixing. Observation of these asymmetries would be evidence for direct CP violation in the decay amplitudes.
We investigate the transverse momentum weighted azimuthal asymmetry with a $\sin\left(3ϕ_h -ϕ_S\right)$ modulation in electroproduction of charged pion production off the transversely polarized proton. The asymmetry is contributed by the product of the second transverse-moment of the pretzelosity distribution function and the first transverse-moment of the Collins function. Using the extracted result for the proton pretzelosity and the available parametrization for the pion Collins function, we numerically predict the $P_{hT}^3$-weighted $\sin\left(3ϕ_h -ϕ_S\right)$ asymmetry for charged pion …
We study the transverse single spin asymmetry in $η_{c,b}$ production in polarized hadron collisions, employing the collinear twist-3 approach in combination with the color singlet model. Our main focus lies on the contribution from the twist-3 Efremov-Teryaev-Qiu-Sterman function. By extrapolating the derived spin dependent cross section to the small transverse momentum region, consistency between the collinear twist-3 approach and the transverse momentum dependent factorization approach is confirmed. As a byproduct of this work, we identify a term contributing to the scale evolution of tri-g…
We study the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering, coming from the Collins effect multiplied by the quark transversity distribution. We argue that the Collins function in this process is the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The experimental study of this process will provide us important information on the quark transversity distribution and test the universality of the fragmentation functions.
We investigate the possibility of using the center-edge asymmetry to distinguish graviton exchange from other new physics effects at hadron colliders. Specifically, we study lepton-pair production within the ADD and RS scenarios. At the Tevatron, the graviton-Z interference is the most important contribution to the center-edge asymmetry, whereas at the LHC, the dominant contribution comes from gluon fusion via graviton exchange, which has no analogue at e^+ e^- colliders. We find that spin-2 and spin-1 exchange can be distinguished up to an ADD cut-off scale, M_H, of about 5 TeV, at the 95% CL…
We study transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions and factorization theorems for the gluon-initiated semi-inclusive processes at hadron colliders. Gauge-invariant TMD gluon distributions are defined, and their relations to the integrated (Feynman) parton distributions are explored when the transverse momentum is large. Through explicit calculations, soft-collinear factorization is verified at one-loop order for scalar particle production. Summation over large double logarithms is made through solving the Collins-Soper equation. We reproduce the known result in the limit that the…
The Sivers transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) is calculated and compared at different scales using the TMD evolution equations applied to previously existing extractions. We apply the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, using the version recently developed by Collins. Our calculations rely on the universality properties of TMD-functions that follow from the TMD-factorization theorem. Accordingly, the non-perturbative input is fixed by earlier experimental measurements, including both polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and unpolarized Drell-Yan (DY) scattering. I…
We present a phenomenological study of the single-transverse spin asymmetry in azimuthal correlations of two jets produced nearly "back-to-back" in pp collisions at RHIC. We properly take into account the initial- and final-state interactions of partons that can generate this asymmetry in QCD hard-scattering. Using distribution functions fitted to the existing single-spin data, we make predictions for various weighted single-spin asymmetries in dijet correlations that are now readily testable at RHIC.
Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries from a longitudinally polarized target. T…
We present predictions and projections for hadron-in-jet measurements and electron-jet azimuthal correlations at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These observables directly probe the three-dimensional (3D) structure of hadrons, in particular, the quark transversity and Sivers parton distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions. We explore the feasibility of these experimental measurements by detector simulations and discuss detector requirements. We conclude that jet observables have the potential to enhance the 3D imaging EIC program.
The signals of the SO(5) \times U(1) gauge-Higgs unification model at the International Linear Collider are studied. In this model, Kaluza-Klein modes of the neutral gauge bosons affect fermion pair productions. The deviations of the forward-backward asymmetries of the $e^+e^-\to \bar{b}b$, $\bar{t}t$ processes from the standard model predictions are clearly seen by using polarised beams. The deviations of these values are predicted for two cases, the bulk mass parameters of quarks are positive and negative case.
Recently HERMES has observed an azimuthal asymmetry in electro-production of neutral pions in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. This asymmetry (like those observed in the production of charged pions) is well reproduced theoretically by using the non-perturbative calculation of the proton transversity distribution in the effective chiral quark-soliton model combined with experimental DELPHI-data on the new T-odd Collins fragmentation function. There are no free, adjustable parameters in the analysis. Using the $z$-dependence …
We study color entanglement effect for T-odd cases in collinear twist-3 factorization. As an example, we compute the transverse single spin asymmetry for direct photon production in pp collisions in pure collinear twist-3 approach. By analyzing the gauge link structure of the collinear gluon distribution on unpolarized target side, we demonstrate how color entanglement effect arises in the presence of the additional gluon attachment from polarized projectile. The result is consistent with that obtained from a hybrid approach calculation.
We predict the features of the Collins function, which describes the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into an unpolarized hadron, by modeling the fragmentation process at a low energy scale. We use the chiral invariant approach of Manohar and Georgi, where constituent quarks and Goldstone bosons are considered as effective degrees of freedom in the non-perturbative regime of QCD. To test the approach we calculate the unpolarized fragmentation function and the transverse momentum distribution of a produced hadron, both of which are described reasonably well. In the case of semi-i…
Recently it has been shown that measurement of charge asymmetry of top pair production at LHC excludes any flavor violating $Z'$ vector gauge boson that could explain Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry (FBA). We consider the general form of a $Z'$ gauge boson including left-handed, right-handed vector and tensor couplings to examine FBA and charge asymmetry. To evaluate top pair asymmetries at Tevatron and LHC, we consider $B^0_q$ mixing constraints on flavor changing $Z'$ couplings and show that this model still explain forward-backward asymmetry at Tevatron and charge asymmetry can not excl…
The Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) in Z' physics is commonly only thought of as an observable which possibly allows one to profiling a Z' signal by distinguishing different models embedding such (heavy) spin-1 bosons. In this brief review, we examine the potential of AFB in setting bounds on or even discovering a Z' at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and proof that it might be a powerful tool for this purpose. We analyse two different scenarios: Z's with a narrow and wide width, respectively. We find that, in both cases, AFB can complement the conventional searches in accessing Z' signals tr…
The effective operator tr(G^3) is the only dimension-6 gluonic operator that cannot be related to four-quark operators. A peculiar property of this operator is that it does not contribute to two-jet production at hadron colliders, at the level of one operator insertion and leading-order in alpha_s; therefore we study its effects on three jet events. To calculate the helicity amplitudes induced by this operator we make extensive use of collinear factorization. We propose several ways of detecting the tr(G^3) signal, one of which exploits its non-trivial behavior under azimuthal rotations of two…
We re-examine our previous calculation on the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process with a $^3$He target, and find that our previous treatment on the dilution factors may cause the results larger than the realistic situation. We thus modify our calculation in an improved treatment with an updated prediction on the $\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)$ asymmetry for the JLab 12 GeV under the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework. Meanwhile, we also provide the prediction of such asymmetry for the JLab 6 GeV and the prediction of the $\sin(3ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ asymme…
Axigluons are colored heavy neutral gauge boson that are predicted by some theories. The most important model-independent manifestation of axigluons is the generation of a forward--backward asymmetry in top-antitop quark production at $p\bar{p}$ collisions which originates from the charge asymmetry. We update our previous analysis for the inclusive QCD induced forward--backward asymmetry and define a new observable which is more sensitive to the effect than the forward--backward asymmetry. We find a lower limit of 1.4 TeV at 90% C.L. on the axigluon mass from recent measurements of the asymmet…
Angular asymmetries are simple, intuitive, model-independent observables used to identify spins of new elementary particles. In the case of Drell-Yan-like boson resonances, we generalize the well-known center-edge angular asymmetry to optimize spin identification when only a limited sample of events is available. By choosing simple weight functions in integrals over the polar angle theta, such as cos theta to the nth power, we can improve spin discrimination significantly in production and decays of spin 0, 1, and 2 bosons. The power n can be tuned in particular cases, but n=2 (n=1) works well…
We investigate the Collins azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced inside jets in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. Recently, the quark transversity distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions have been extracted within global analyses from data of the processes semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and electron-positron annihilation. We calculate the Collins azimuthal asymmetry for charged pions inside jets using these extractions for RHIC kinematics at center-of-mass energies of 200 and 500 GeV. We compare our results with recent data from the STAR Collaboration a…
A sizeable difference in the differential production cross section of top and antitop quarks, respectively, is predicted for hadronically produced heavy quarks. It is of order $α_s$ and arises from the interference between charge odd and even amplitudes respectively. For the TEVATRON it amounts up to 15\% for the differential distribution in suitable chosen kinematical regions. The resulting integrated forward-backward asymmetry of 4--5\% could be measured in the next round of experiments. At the LHC the asymmetry can be studied by selecting appropriately chosen kinematical regions. Furthermor…
We investigate the single transverse-spin asymmetry with a $\sin (ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ modulation in the charged Kaon produced and in $Λ$ hyperon produced SIDIS process within the theoretical framework of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at the next-to-leading-logarithmic order. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolution of Sivers function and the unpolarized fragmentation function $D_1$ for the produced hadron. The parametrization for the proton Qiu-Sterman function, which is closely related to the Sivers function, is adopted to numerically estimate the Sivers asymmetry at the kine…
Single transverse spin asymmetry for the pion production in pp and ep collisions is studied in the framework of collinear factorization. The soft-gluon pole contributions with twist-3 distribution and fragmentation functions are identified and its characteristic features are discussed.
A helicity asymmetry for top quarks originating from Higgs boson decays is investigated within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model. The asymmetry is sensitive to CP violation in the scalar sector of the model, whereas it vanishes in the Standard Model. It has been checked that without any fine tuning of parameters the asymmetry can reach $50\%$. Standard decay patterns $\twbdec$ and $\tbwbdec$ are utilized as spin analyzers to measure the asymmetry. The Higgs production mechanism considered here is $\hprod$. It has been shown that signal from the asymmetry can easy overcome the noise for Higgs bosons pr…
The energy loss parameter $\hat q$ is one of the fundamental transport parameters of hadronic matter. Using the twist-4 collinear approach, we show that the $\cos ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) off a large nucleus at intermediate transverse momentum is a sensitive observable for its determination. The effect is due to the suppression of the azimuthal asymmetry by final-state multiple scattering.
We revisit the transverse single spin asymmetry in the angular distribution of a Drell-Yan dilepton pair. We study this asymmetry by using twist-3 collinear factorization, and we obtain the same result both in covariant gauge and in the light-cone gauge. Moreover, we have checked the electromagnetic gauge invariance of our calculation. Our final expression for the asymmetry differs from all the previous results given in the literature. The overall sign of this asymmetry is as important as the sign of the Sivers asymmetry in Drell-Yan.
We use techniques from soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) to derive renormalization-group improved predictions for single-particle inclusive (1PI) observables in top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. In particular, we study the top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions, the forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron, and the total cross section at NLO+NNLL order in resummed perturbation theory and at approximate NNLO in fixed order. We also perform a detailed analysis of power corrections to the leading terms in the threshold expansion of the partonic hard-scatterin…
The azimuthal asymmetry of heavy quarks production on double polarized proton-proton and proton-antiproton colliders are studied in this work at next-to-leading order in $α_s$, with some details included. The purpose is to see whether the effect of extracted transversity distribution functions can be seen on present and near future colliders. All analytic one-loop hard coefficients are given. Numerical results for the asymmetry on proton-(anti)proton colliders are presented.
We calculate observables relevant for forward jets at LHC. The simulations are performed using Monte Carlo event generators. In particular we compare results from CASCADE based on high energy factorization and PYTHIA which is based on collinear factorization.
Spin azimuthal asymmetries in pion electro-production in deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized protons, measured by HERMES, are well reproduced theoretically with no adjustable parameters. Predictions for azimuthal asymmetries for a longitudinally polarized deuteron target are given. The z-dependence of the Collins fragmentation function is extracted. The first information on e(x) is extracted from CLAS A_LU asymmetry.
Single transverse-spin asymmetries have been studied intensively both in experiment and theory. Theoretically, two factorization approaches have been proposed. One is by using transverse-momentum-dependent factorization and the asymmetry comes from the so called Sivers function. Another is by using collinear factorization where the nonperturbative effect is parameterized by a twist-3 hadronic matrix element. However, the factorized formulas for the asymmetries in the two approaches are derived at hadron level formally by diagram expansion, where one works with various parton density matrices o…
The charge asymmetry in top quark production at hadron colliders is sensitive to beyond-the-Standard-Model four-fermion interactions. In this study we compare the sensitivity of cross-section and charge asymmetry measurements to effective operators describing four-fermion interactions and study the limits on the validity of this approach. A fit to a combination of Tevatron and LHC measurements yields stringent limits on the linear combinations $C_1$ and $C_2$ of the four-fermion effective operators.
Both D0 and CDF at Tevatron reported the measurements of forward-backward asymmetry in top pair production, which showed possible deviation from the standard model QCD prediction. In this paper, we explore how to examine the {\em same} higher-order QCD effects at the more powerful Large Hadron Collider.
We calculate the $cos~2 ϕ$ asymmetry in $J/ψ$ production in electron-proton collision for the kinematics of the planned electron-ion collider (EIC). This directly probes the Weiszäcker-Williams (WW) type linearly polarized gluon distribution. Assuming generalized factorization, we calculate the asymmetry at next-to-leading-order (NLO) when the energy fraction of the $J/ψ$ satisfies $z<1$ and the dominating subprocess is $γ^* +g \rightarrow c + {\bar c}+g$. We use non-relativistic QCD based color singlet model for $J/ψ$ production. We investigate the small $x$ region which will be accessible at…
The recent data on the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)}$ from HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions. A fit of SIDIS data from HERMES Collaboration is performed leading to the extraction of favoured and unfavoured Collins fragmentation functions. A very good description of COMPASS data is obtained. BELLE $e^+e^-$ data are shown to be compatible with our estimates based on the extracted Collins fragmentation functions. Predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)}$ asymmetries at J…
We examine the capability of the NLC in the $γe$ collider mode to probe the CP-conserving $γWW$ and $γZZ$ anomalous couplings through the use of the polarization asymmetry. When combined with other measurements, very strong constraints on both varieties of anomalous couplings can be obtained. [To appear in {\it Physics and Technology of the Next Linear Collider}, eds. D.\ Burke and M.\ Peskin, reports submitted to Snowmass 1996.]
We study the twist-3 three-gluon contribution to the single spin asymmetry in the light-hadron production in pp collision in the framework of the collinear factorization. We derive the corresponding cross section formula in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. We also present a numerical calculation of the asymmetry at the RHIC energy, using a model for the three-gluon correlation functions suggested by the asymmetry observed in the $D$-meson production at RHIC.
