We study the Collins mechanism contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry in inclusive hadron production in pp scattering p^{\uparrow}p\to πX from the leading jet fragmentation. The azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadron in the jet leads to a single spin asymmetry for the produced hadron in the Lab frame. The effect is evaluated in a transverse momentum dependent model that takes into account the transverse momentum dependence in the fragmentation process. We find the asymmetry is comparable in size to the experimental observation at RHIC at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV.
We calculate the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in proton-proton collisions. We generate the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compare our results with the Fermilab E704 data from polarized proton-proton collisions at 200 GeV. We show that the transversely polarized quark densities at high Bjorken x strongly differ from these predicted by the SU(6) proton wave function.
The Collins fragmentation function is extracted from HERMES data on azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, and BELLE data on azimuthal asymmetries in electron positron annihilations. A Gaussian model is assumed for the distribution of transverse parton momenta and predictions are used from the chiral quark-soliton model for the transversity distribution function. We find that the HERMES and BELLE data yield a consistent picture of the Collins fragmentation function which is compatible with COMPASS data and the information previously obtained from an an…
We calculated the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in the fragmentation region of transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. We generated the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compared our results to the presently available experimental data. We obtained a qualitative agreement with the data after assuming that the transverse polarizations of the $u$ and the $d$ quarks in the proton are +1 and -1, respectively, at x_B = 1.
We study the Collins mechanism for the single transverse spin asymmetry in the collinear factorization approach. The correspondent twist-three fragmentation function is identified. We show that the Collins function calculated in this approach is universal. We further examine its contribution to the single transverse spin asymmetry of semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering and demonstrate that the transverse momentum dependent and twist-three collinear approaches are consistent in the intermediate transverse momentum region where both apply.
We consider the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- experimental data and investigate to what extent they might explain the large Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) observed in proton-proton inclusive processes. This phenomenological study is performed within the TMD factorization scheme. As the SIDIS data cover only a limited range of x values (x < 0.3), we allow for different large $x$ behaviours of the SIDIS Sivers functions and transversity distributions. We conclude that, within the available experimental constraints, one cannot observe any clear univers…
We construct a theoretical framework to match the formulas for forward inclusive hadron productions in pA collisions in the small-x saturation formalism and collinear factorization. The small-x calculation can be viewed as a power series in $Q_s^2/k_\perp^2$, in which the collinear factorization result corresponds to the leading term. At high transverse momentum, the subleading correction terms are insignficant, whereas at low $p_\perp$, the power corrections become important and the small-x resummation is essential to describe the differential cross section. We show that the familiar collinea…
We propose the study of the inclusive hadroproduction of a heavy-flavored jet in association with a light jet, as a probe channel of strong interactions at high energies. We build up a hybrid factorization that encodes genuine high-energy effects, provided by a partial next-to-leading BFKL resummation, inside the standard collinear structure of the cross section. We present a detailed analysis of different distributions, shaped on kinematic ranges typical of experimental analyses at the Large Hadron Collider, and differential in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse momentum. The fair stabi…
We study the Collins effect in the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering. From the detailed analysis of one-gluon and two-gluon exchange diagrams contributions, the Collins function is found the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e^+e^- annihilations. The eikonal propagators in these diagrams do not contribute to the phase needed for the Collins-type single spin asymmetry, and the universality is derived as a result of the Ward identity. We argue that this conclusion depend…
We apply the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism to investigate the transverse single spin dependent Collins asymmetry with a $\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_s)$ modulation in the semi-inclusive production of Kaon meson in deep inelastic scattering process. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolutions of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ of the target proton and the Collins function of the Kaon in the final state. We adopt the available parametrization of $h_1(x)$ as well as the recent extracted result for the Kaon Collins function. To perform the transverse momentum dependent …
The much debated issue of the transverse single spin asymmetry A_N observed in the inclusive large P_T production of a single hadron in pp interactions, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X, is considered in a TMD factorization scheme. A previous result [1,2] stating that the maximum contribution of the Collins effect is strongly suppressed, is revisited, correcting a numerical error. New estimates are given, adopting the Collins functions recently extracted from SIDIS and e+e- data, and phenomenological consequences are discussed.
We present model predictions of Collins asymmetries for proton in the SIDIS process for $π^+$ and $π^-$ channels. We use a recently proposed light-front quark-diquark model for proton with the light-front wave functions predicted in soft-wall AdS/QCD. The model predictions are compared with the HERMES and COMPASS data.
We investigate the $sin ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering off longitudinally polarized nucleon target arising from the time reversal odd structures. The order 1/Q contributions of the leading twist and twist-three distribution and fragmentation functions to that asymmetry for the certain kinematical conditions are numerically estimated.
The parity-conserving single-spin beam asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering is induced by an absorptive part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. We demonstrate that this asymmetry has logarithmic and double-logarithmic enhancement due to contributions of hard collinear quasi-real photons. An optical theorem is used to evaluate the asymmetry in terms of the total photoproduction cross section on the proton, predicting its magnitude at a few parts per million for high electon beam energies and small scattering angles. At fixed 4-momentum transfers, the asymmetry is rising logarithmi…
We show that the spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering between a longitudinally polarized lepton beam and a transversely polarized proton target is sensitive to the proton transversity function. The asymmetry, which is twist 3, is estimated to be more than 10% under the most favourable conditions. The experiment we suggest is feasible at facilities like DESY, CERN and JLAB.
On the basis of the mechanism proposed earlier for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production we consider OZI--suppressed process of $φ$-meson production $pp\rightarrow φX$ and asymmetry $A_N(φ)$ in this process. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum of strange quark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks.
We present a novel study on the inclusive production of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a test field of the high-energy QCD dynamics. The large transverse momenta at which the two final-state objects are detected permits us to perform an analysis in the spirit of the variable-flavor number scheme (VFNS), in which the cross section for the hadroproduction of a light parton is convoluted with a perturbative fragmentation function that describes the transition from a light quark to a heavy hadron. The quarkonium collinear fragmentation function is b…
We consider the double-spin cos(phi) asymmetry for pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized leptons off longitudinally polarized protons. We estimate the size of the asymmetry in the approximation where all twist-3 interaction-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions are set to zero. In that approximation at HERMES kinematics a sizable negative cos(phi) double-spin asymmetry for pi+ electroproduction is predicted.
We calculate, in a model, the beam spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive jet production in deep inelastic scattering. This twist-3, $T$-odd observable is non-zero due to final state strong interactions. With reasonable choices for the parameters, one finds an asymmetry of several percent, about the size seen experimentally. We present the result both as an explicit asymmetry calculation and as a model calculation of the new transverse-momentum dependent distribution function $g^\perp$.
On the basis of the mechanism proposed for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production we specify an $x$--dependence of asymmetries in inclusive processes of pion production. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum ofquark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks. The $x$--dependence of asymmetries in the charged pion production at large $x$ reflects the corresponding dependence of constituent quark polarization in the polarized proton.
We study the beam single spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering in at order 1/Q. There are two competing contributions: the leading order transverse momentum dependent parton distribution $h_1^\perp(x,k_\perp)$ convoluted with chiral-odd fragmentation function $\hat e(z)$, and the chiral-odd distribution function $e(x)$ convoluted with Collins fragmentation function $H_1^\perp(z,k'_\perp)$. We estimate this asymmetry and compare with the experimental measurements from CLAS and HERMES collaborations.
We show that a new beam-spin asymmetry appears in deep inelastic inclusive lepto-production at low transverse momenta when a hadron in the target fragmentation region is observed in association with another hadron in the current fragmentation region. The beam leptons are longitudinally polarized while the target nucleons are unpolarized. This asymmetry is a leading-twist effect generated by the correlation between the transverse momentum of quarks and the transverse momentum of the hadron emitted by the target. Experimental signatures of this effect are discussed.
We study the inclusive rare decay $B\to X_d+γ$ in the supergravity inspired Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and compute the CP-asymmetry in the decay rates. We show that there exist two phenomenologically acceptable sets of SUSY parameters: for one set the CP-asymmetry has the same (positive) sign as in the Standard Model and lies in the range (5-45)% while for the other set it is negative with values within -(2-21)%.
We correct our analysis of the HERMES experiment for the azimuthal sin(phi)-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadroproduction in DIS on longitudinally (with respect to the lepton momentum) polarized target because of discovered misprint in sign in the paper P.J.Mulders and R.D.Tangerman, Nucl. Phys. B 461 (1996) 197.
We shortly review the various methods suggested for determining the transversity function. Among such methods, we consider especially those based on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In the framework of this kind of reactions, we propose to measure a double spin asymmetry, using a transversely polarized proton target and a longitudinally polarized lepton beam, and fixing the direction of the final pion. Under particular conditions, the asymmetry is sensitive to the transversity function.
In this paper, we discuss the new hard pole contribution to the $P_{h\perp}$-weighted single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We perform the complete next-to-leading order calculation of the $P_{h\perp}$-weighted cross section and show that the new hard pole contribution is required in order to obtain the complete evolution equation for the Qiu-Sterman function derived by different approaches.
The factorisation of QCD matrix elements in the limit of two external partons becoming collinear is described by process-independent splitting amplitudes, which can be expanded systematically in perturbation theory. Working in conventional dimensional regularisation, we compute the two-loop splitting amplitudes for all simple collinear splitting processes, including subleading terms in the regularisation parameter. Our results are then applied to derive an analytical expression for the two-loop single-real contribution to inclusive Higgs boson production in gluon fusion to fourth order (N3LO) …
We discuss the contributions of the transverse spin component of the target to the double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons.
We show that the transverse momentum dependent transversity function is proportional to the longitudinal polarization of a quark in a transversely polarized proton. This result suggests an alternative, convenient method for determining transversity, without knowing unusual fragmentation functions. The method consists of measuring the double spin azimuthal asymmetry in semi-inclusive pion leptoproduction by a transversely polarized proton target. The asymmetry, which is twist 3, is estimated to be more than 10% under the most favorable conditions. The experiment we suggest is feasible at facili…
It is shown that the polarization in inclusive hyperon production and the left-right asymmetries in meson and hyperon production are closely related to one other. They can be understood in terms of a picture in which the orbital motion of valence quarks of the scattering hadrons play an important role.
We study transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions and factorization theorems for the gluon-initiated semi-inclusive processes at hadron colliders. Gauge-invariant TMD gluon distributions are defined, and their relations to the integrated (Feynman) parton distributions are explored when the transverse momentum is large. Through explicit calculations, soft-collinear factorization is verified at one-loop order for scalar particle production. Summation over large double logarithms is made through solving the Collins-Soper equation. We reproduce the known result in the limit that the…
We discuss the role of some nonpartonic effects which lead to $N_p^{π^+} \ne N_n^{π^+}$ and $N_p^{π^-} \ne N_n^{π^-}$ and may therefore modify the conclusionon the $\bar d - \bar u$ asymmetry extracted from semi-inclusive production of pions in DIS. Quantitative estimations for resolved photon and exclusive $ρ^0$ are given as examples. The results are discussed in the context of recent HERMES data.
We compute the single-spin asymmetry $A_{UL}$ in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized leptons and longitudinally polarized protons at large transverse momentum of the produced hadron. Our calculation is performed in collinear factorization at the lowest order of QCD perturbation theory. For photon exchange the asymmetry is T-odd and receives contributions from the interference of the tree level and one-loop absorptive amplitudes. We consider the behavior of the spin asymmetry at low transverse momentum where contact to the formalism based on transverse-momentum dependent dis…
We propose new formulas for extracting a difference of the polarized light sea-quark density, $Δ\bar d(x)-Δ\bar u(x)$, from polarized deep-inelastic semi-inclusive data. We have estimated the value of it from the present experimental data measured by SMC and HERMES groups. Although the data might suggest a violation of polarized light flavor sea-quark symmetry, the precision of the present data is not enough for confirming it.
Establishing the twist-3 formalsim for the single transverse spin asymmetry, we present a complete single-spin-dependent cross section for SIDIS, $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$, associated with the twist-3 distribution for the transversely polarized nucleon. We emphasize that the consistency condition from the Ward identities for color gauge invariance is crucial to prove factorization property of the cross section.
We study the contribution of the twist-3 fragmentation function to the single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering within the framework of the collinear factorization. Making use of the Ward-Takahashi identity in QCD, we establish the formalism in the Feynman gauge to calculate the non-pole contribution of the twist-3 fragmentation function to the asymmetry and derive the complete cross-section formula in the leading order QCD perturbation theory. The obtained twist-3 hadronic tensor is shown to satisfy the electromagnetic gauge-invariance. The behavior in the …
We re-examine our previous calculation on the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process with a $^3$He target, and find that our previous treatment on the dilution factors may cause the results larger than the realistic situation. We thus modify our calculation in an improved treatment with an updated prediction on the $\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)$ asymmetry for the JLab 12 GeV under the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework. Meanwhile, we also provide the prediction of such asymmetry for the JLab 6 GeV and the prediction of the $\sin(3ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ asymme…
We investigate the nucleon tensor charge from current experiments by a combined analysis of the Collins asymmetries in two hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering processes. The transverse momentum dependent evolution is taken into account, for the first time, in the global fit of the Collins fragmentation functions and the quark transversity distributions at the approximate next-to-leading logarithmic order. We obtain the nucleon tensor charge contribution from up and down quarks as $δu=+0.30^{+0.12}_{-0.08}$ and $δd=-0.20_…
We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We derive the leading contribution to the asymmetry at moderate transverse momentum $P_{h\perp}$ of the produced hadron in terms of twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions, and compare with the approach based on the factorization at fixed transverse momentum involving the asymmetric transverse-momentum and spin-dependent quark distribution. We verify that the two approaches yield identical results in this regime. By a comparison with our earlier calculations for the single-spin…
A phenomenological model which has had some success in explaining polarization phenomena and left-right asymmetry in inclusive proton-proton scattering is considered for reactions involving photons. In particular, the reactions (a) $ γ+ p \to H + X;$ (b) $γ+ p (\uparrow) \to π^{\pm} + X $ and (c) $p(\uparrow) + p \to γ+ X$ are considered where $γ=$ resolved photon and hyperon $ H = Λ^0, Σ^{\pm}$ etc. Predictions for hyperon polarization in (a) and the asymmetry (in (b) and (c)) provide further tests of this particular model. Feasibility of observing (b) at HERA and the effect of the polarizati…
We study the $\cos 2 ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized semi-inclusive DIS, taking into account both the perturbative contribution (gluon emission and splitting) and the non perturbative effects arising from intrinsic transverse motion and transverse spin of quarks. In particular we explore the possibility to extract from $<\cos 2 ϕ>$ some information about the Boer--Mulders function $h_1^{\perp}$, which represents a transverse--polarization asymmetry of quarks inside an unpolarized hadron. Predictions are presented for the HERMES, COMPASS and JLab kinematics, where $<\cos 2 ϕ>$ is dominate…
We derive a general framework for describing semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering in terms of the unintegrated parton distributions and other higher twist parton correlations. Such a framework provides a consistent approach to the calculation of inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections including higher twist effects. As an example, we calculate the azimuthal asymmetries to the order of 1/Q in semi-inclusive process with transversely polarized target. A non-vanishing single-spin asymmetry in the ``triggered inclusive process'' is predicted to be 1/Q suppressed with a part …
We calculate the q q correlation function associated to transverse target lepton-nucleon inclusive deep-inelastic scattering by direct evaluation of the corresponding matrix element. We use the electromagnetic impact parameter potential for a transversely polarized nucleon to define the q q correlation function for each avor in terms of the field components of that avor. The results are compared with the two existing models for the q q correlator. Using the calculated q q correlation function, we estimated the transverse target SSA in IDIS process.
We study the longitudinal-transverse double spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ for direct photon production in nucleon-nucleon scattering by using the collinear twist-3 approach. This asymmetry, which, for instance, could be measured at RHIC, contains a complete set of collinear twist-3 correlation functions in a transversely polarized nucleon.
We study the single transverse spin asymmetries in the single inclusive particle production within the framework of the generalized parton model (GPM). By carefully analyzing the initial- and final-state interactions, we include the process-dependence of the Sivers functions into the GPM formalism. The modified GPM formalism has a close connection with the collinear twist-3 approach. Within the new formalism, we make predictions for inclusive $π^0$ and direct photon productions at RHIC energies. We find the predictions are opposite to those in the conventional GPM approach.
We study the scattering of a single parton state with a multi-parton state to derive the complete results of perturbative coefficient functions at leading order, which appear in the collinear factorization for Single transverse-Spin Asymmetry(SSA) in Drell-Yan processes with a transversely polarized hadron in the initial state. We find that the factorization formula of SSA contains hard-pole-, soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions. It is interesting to note that the leading order perturbative coefficient functions of soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions are extracted…
Revised formulas for the inclusive cross section of a triple parton scattering process in a hadron collision are suggested basing on the modified collinear three-parton distributions. The possible phenomenological issues are discussed.
We discuss the single-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS, $e p^\uparrow \to e πX$, based on the twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization relevant for the pion production with the large transverse-momentum. This updates our previous study by including, in particular, the contributions induced by the novel partonic subprocesses, and allows us to derive the entire formula for the corresponding single-spin asymmetry associated with a complete set of the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We discuss the correspondence with the results obtained…
We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for inclusive light-hadron productions in the proton-proton collision, $\pphx$ ($h=π,K,η$), for the RHIC kinematics based on the twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization. The analysis includes all the contributions from the soft-gluon pole and the soft-fermion pole for the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized proton. After discussing the flavor decomposition and the $P_T$-dependence of the asymmetry obtained in the previous analysis at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=62.4$ and 200 GeV, we will give a p…
Next-to-leading order correction to the one-particle inclusive cross section in the framework of high energy factorization is calculated. Numerical results for midrapidity region are compared with predictions of conventional calculations based on collinear factorization.
As a possible source of the single transverse spin asymmetry, we study the contribution from purely gluonic correlation represented by the twist-3 ``three-gluon correlation" functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We first define a complete set of the relevant three-gluon correlation functions, and then derive its contribution to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section for the $D$-meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, which is relevant to determine the three-gluon correlations. Our cross-section formula differs from the corresponding result in the liter…
In this paper we study the single longitudinal spin asymmetry $A_{UL}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_R)}$ of dihadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) via helicity-dependent dihadron fragmentation function (DiFF), which describes the correlation of the longitudinal polarization of a fragmenting quark with the transverse momenta of the produced hadron pair. Recently experimental searching for this azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron SIDIS by the COMPASS Collaboration yielded a very small signal. Here we calculate this unknown T-odd DiFF $G_1^\perp$ using a spectator model to access the a…
We consider the azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic leptoproduction arising due to both perturbative and nonperturbative effects at HERMES energies and show that the $k_T^2/Q^2$ order corrections to $< \cosϕ>$ and $< \cos2ϕ>$ are significant. We also reconsider the results of perturbative effects for $< \cosϕ>$ at large momentum transfers \cite{A1} using the more recent sets of scale-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions, which bring up to $18{%}$ difference in $< \cosϕ>$. In the same approach we calculate the $< \cos2ϕ>$ as well.

It is shown how the single spin asymmetry observed in inclusive pion production is related, in the helicity basis, to the imaginary part of the product of two different distribution amplitudes, rather than to the usual quark and gluon distribution functions; there is then no reason why it should be zero even in massless perturbative QCD, provided the quark intrinsic motion is taken into account. A simple model is constructed which reproduces the main features of the data.
We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the pion production with large transverse momentum p_T in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$. We derive the twist-3 cross section formula for SSA, focussing on the soft-gluon-pole contributions associated with the twist-3 distribution for the nucleon and with the twist-3 fragmentation function for the pion. We present a simple estimate of the asymmetries due to each twist-3 effect from nucleon and pion, respectively, by fixing the overall strength of the relevant nonperturbative quantities by the data on the SSA A_N in $p^…
The cross section data for $π^0$ inclusive production in $pp$ collisions is considered in a rather broad kinematic region in energy $\sqrt{s}$, Feynman variable $x_F$ and transverse momentum $p_T$. The analysis of these data is done in the perturbative QCD framework at the next-to-leading order. We find that they cannot be correctly described in the entire kinematic domain and this leads us to conclude that the single-spin asymmetry, $A_N$ for this process, observed several years ago at FNAL by the experiment E704 and the recent result obtained at BNL-RHIC by STAR, are two different phenomena.…
