We present predictions and projections for hadron-in-jet measurements and electron-jet azimuthal correlations at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These observables directly probe the three-dimensional (3D) structure of hadrons, in particular, the quark transversity and Sivers parton distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions. We explore the feasibility of these experimental measurements by detector simulations and discuss detector requirements. We conclude that jet observables have the potential to enhance the 3D imaging EIC program.
We perform a calculation of Sivers function in a light-cone SU(6) quark-diquark model with both scalar diquark and vector diquark spectators. We derive the transverse momentum dependent light-cone wave function of the proton by taking into account the Melosh-Wigner rotation. By adopting one-gluon exchange, we obtain a non-vanishing Sivers function of $down$ quark from interference of proton spin amplitudes. We analyze the $\frac{|P_{h\perp}|}{M}$ weighted Sivers asymmetries in $π^+$, $π^-$ and $π^0$ electroproduction off transverse polarized proton target, averaged and not averaged by the kine…
The Sivers and Collins asymmetries are the most interesting Single Spin Asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering with transverse target polarization. In this talk we present our understanding of these phenomena.
The spin asymmetries in SIDIS associated with $T$-odd TMDs are presented in a light-front quark-diquark model of a proton. To incorporate the effects of the final state interaction, the light front wave functions are modified to have a phase factor which is essential to have Sivers or Boer-Mulders functions. The Sivers and Boer-Mulder asymmetries are compared with HERMES and COMPASS data.
We calculate the Sivers and $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in $J/ψ$ production in polarized and unpolarized semi-inclusive $ep$ collision respectively, using the formalism based on transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). Non-relativistic QCD based color octet model is employed for calculating the $J/ψ$ production rate. The Sivers asymmetry in this process directly probes the gluon Sivers function. The estimated Sivers asymmetry at $z=1$ is negative which is in good agreement with COMPASS data. We also investigate the effect of TMD evolution on the Sivers asymmetry. The $\cos…
The Sivers and Collins asymmetries are the most prominent Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA)in Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS)with transverse target polarization. In this talk we present our understanding of these phenomena.
New data on the Sivers azimuthal asymmetry measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering processes have recently been released by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN. Their increased precision and their particular binning, in terms of $Q^2$ as well as $x$, motivates a new extraction of the Sivers function, within the framework of a simple and transparent parametrization. Signals of TMD effects visible in the Sivers asymmetries are critically assessed. A thorough study of the uncertainties affecting the extracted Sivers function is presented, including the low-$x$ and large-$x$ regions.
Recently it has been argued that the transverse momentum dependent twist-2 Sivers distribution function does not vanish in QCD. Therefore both, the Collins and Sivers effects, should be considered in order to explain the azimuthal single spin asymmetries A(UL) in pion production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton scattering of a longitudinally polarized target. On the basis of presently available phenomenological information on the Sivers function we estimate that for those asymmetries A(UL) in the kinematic region of the HERMES experiments the Sivers effect can be neglected with respec…
We present a point-by-point determination of the Sivers distributions from hadron leptoproduction data. The method, which relies on some simple assumptions, is based on the combined analysis of proton and deuteron observables. We make use of the single-spin asymmetries measured by COMPASS in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of 160 GeV muons on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets.
In this paper we probe the Sivers asymmetries through $\rm J/ψ$ photoproduction in $\rm p^\uparrow p$ collision within the non-relativistic QCD framework, based on color octet model and the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions (TMDs). Both the DGLAP evolution and the TMD evolution are included. The intensity and the sign of the Sivers asymmetry is strongly related on evolution model used to investigate the Gluon Sivers Function (GSF). A sizable asymmetry is obtained as a function of the rapidity, $\rm log{(x_γ)}$ or $\rm log{(x_{g})}$ dependence using a recent parametrization of …
We consider the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- experimental data and investigate to what extent they might explain the large Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) observed in proton-proton inclusive processes. This phenomenological study is performed within the TMD factorization scheme. As the SIDIS data cover only a limited range of x values (x < 0.3), we allow for different large $x$ behaviours of the SIDIS Sivers functions and transversity distributions. We conclude that, within the available experimental constraints, one cannot observe any clear univers…
We investigate the transverse momentum weighted Sivers asymmetries in the processes with transversely polarized proton target, including the $\frac{P_{hT}}{zM_p}\sin (ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ weighted asymmetry in charged hadron production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the $\frac{q_T}{M_p}\sin (ϕ_S)$ weighted asymmetry in $π^- p$ Drell-Yan process. Due to the integration over the transverse momentum, the weighted asymmetries can be expressed as the product of the transverse-moments of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation fu…
We summarize the present phenomenology of Sivers and Collins effects for transverse single spin asymmetries in polarized proton-proton collisions within the framework of the generalized parton model (GPM). We will discuss a reassessment of the Collins effect and some preliminary predictions for SSA's in p(pol) p -> pi,K + X processes at RHIC obtained using updated information from SIDIS data and a new set of meson fragmentation functions.
One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment (SPS, CERN) \cite{Abbon:2007pq} is the exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon via spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off transversely polarized targets. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and transversely polarized $^6LiD$ (in 2002, 2003 and 2004) and $NH_3$ (in 2007 and 2010) targets. In the past few years considerable theoretical interest and experimental e…
Sivers asymmetry, adopted to explain transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) observed in inclusive pion production, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X and p-bar(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X is used here to compute SSA in Drell-Yan processes; in this case, by considering the differential cross section in the lepton-pair invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum, other mechanisms which may originate SSA cannot contribute. Estimates for RHIC experiments are given.
The study of the Sivers effect, describing correlations between the transverse polarization of the nucleon and its constituent (unpolarized) parton's transverse momentum, has been the topic of a great deal of experimental, phenomenological and theoretical effort in recent years. Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering measurements of the corresponding single spin asymmetries (SSA) at the upcoming CLAS12 experiment at JLab and the proposed Electron-Ion Collider will help to pinpoint the flavor structure and the momentum dependence of the Sivers parton distribution function describing this effe…

We argue that weighted azimuthal single spin asymmetries in back-to-back jet or pion production in polarized proton-proton scattering can be written as convolutions of universal distribution and fragmentation functions with gluonic pole cross sections as hard functions. Gluonic pole cross sections are gauge-invariant weighted sums of Feynman diagrams. The weight factors are a direct consequence of the (diagram-dependence of) gauge links. The best known consequence of the gauge links is the generation of the Sivers effect that is a source for single-spin asymmetries. Moreover, due to the depend…
We consider the cross section in Fourier space, conjugate to the outgoing hadron's transverse momentum, where convolutions of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions become simple products. Individual asymmetric terms in the cross section can be projected out by means of a generalized set of weights involving Bessel functions. Advantages of employing these Bessel weights are that they suppress (divergent) contributions from high transverse momentum and that soft factors cancel in (Bessel-) weighted asymmetries. Also, the resulting compact express…
Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we develop the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism for heavy flavor dijet production in polarized-proton-electron collisions. We consider heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, as well as the associated evolution equations. Using this formalism, we generate a prediction for the gluon Sivers asymmetry for charm and bottom dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Furthermore, we compare theoretical predictions with and without the inclusion of finite quark masses. We find that the heavy flavor m…
We study double transverse spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process at measured transverse momentum of the lepton pair. Contrary to what a collinear factorization approach would suggest, a nonzero double transverse spin asymmetry in the laboratory frame a priori does not imply nonzero transversity. TMD effects, such as the double Sivers effect, in principle form a background. Using the current knowledge of the relevant TMDs we estimate their contribution in the laboratory frame for Drell-Yan and W production at RHIC and point out a cross check asymmetry measurement to bound the TMD contributi…
The Sivers distributions recently extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data [1] are used to compute estimates for Sivers asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes which are being planned at several facilities (RHIC, COMPASS, J-PARC, PAX, PANDA, NICA (JINR) and SPASCHARM (IHEP)). Most of these asymmetries turn out to be large and could allow a clear test of the predicted sign change of the Sivers distributions when active in SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes. This is regarded as a fundamental test of our understanding, within QCD and the factorization scheme, of single spin asymmetries.
We calculate the Sivers distribution functions induced by the final-state interaction due to one-gluon exchange in diquark models of nucleon structure, treating the cases of scalar and axial-vector diquarks with both dipole and Gaussian form factors. We use these distribution functions to calculate the Sivers single-spin asymmetries for inclusive pion and kaon production in deep-inelastic scattering. We compare our calculations with the results of HERMES and COMPASS, finding good agreement for pi+ production at HERMES, and qualitative agreement for pi0 and K+ production. Our predictions for pi…
We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon p…
We propose the jet charge observable as a novel probe of flavor structure in the nucleon spin program at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). We show that jet charge measurements can substantially enhance the sensitivity of spin asymmetries to different partonic flavors in the nucleon. This sensitivity can be further improved by constructing the jet charge using only a subset of hadron species (pions or kaons) in the jet. As an example, we use the Sivers asymmetry in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC to show that the jet charge can be a unique tool in constraining the Sivers function…
We investigate the energy evolution of the azimuthal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan lepton pair production in pp collisions. The scale dependence is evaluated by applying an approximate solution to the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) evolution equation at one-loop order which is adequate for moderate Q^2 variations. This describes well the unpolarized cross sections for SIDIS and Drell-Yan process in the $Q^2$ range of 2.4-100GeV^2. A combined analysis of the Sivers asymmetries in SIDIS from HERMES and COMPASS experiments, an…
COMPASS is a fixed-target high energy physics experiment at the SPS at CERN \cite{Abbon:2007pq}. One of the important objectives of the experiment is the exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon via spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off transversely polarized target. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and transversely polarized $^6LiD$ (in 2002, 2003 and 2004) and $NH_3$ (in 2007 and 2010) targets. Till now main atte…
We consider the recent RHIC data on the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) A_N, measured in p(transv. polarized) p -> pi^0 X processes at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX collaboration. The measurement is consistent with a vanishing SSA. We analyze this experimental information within a hard scattering approach based on a generalized QCD factorization scheme, with unintegrated, transverse momentum dependent (TMD), parton distribution and fragmentation functions. It turns out that, in the kinematical region of the data, only the gluon Sivers effect could give a large contribution to A_N; its vani…
We calculate the single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_{N}$ of $W^{\pm}$ bosons produced in transversely polarized pp collisions with the valence part of the up (u) and down (d) quark Sivers functions treated by an available parametrization and the light-cone quark spectator-diquark model respectively, while the sea part Sivers functions of u and d quarks treated as parametrization. Comparing our results with those from experimental data at RHIC, we find that the Sivers functions of sea quarks play an important role in the determination of the shapes of $A^{W^{\pm}}_{N}$. It is shown that $A^{W…
The relevance of intrinsic (or primordial) transverse momentum of partons in the inclusive production of particles at high energy and moderately large p_T has been known for a long time, beginning with Drell-Yan and diphoton processes, and continuing with photon and meson production in hadronic collisions. In view of its renewed interest in the context of polarized processes and single spin asymmetries we perform, in the framework of perturbative QCD with the inclusion of spin and transverse momentum effects, a detailed analysis of several such processes in different kinematical situations. We…
The production of D mesons in the scattering of transversely polarized protons off unpolarized protons at RHIC offers a clear opportunity to gain information on the Sivers gluon distribution function. D production at intermediate rapidity values is dominated by the elementary g g --> c cbar channel; contributions from q qbar --> c cbar s-channel become important only at very large values of x_F. In both processes there is no single spin transfer, so that the final c or cbar quarks are not polarized. Therefore, any transverse single spin asymmetry observed for D's produced in p(transv. polarize…
A major experimental program is presently underway to determine the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, vital for understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. To this end we consider the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity azimuthal asymmetries of the difference cross sections of hadrons with opposite charges in SIDIS reactions with unpolarized and transversely polarized target l+N\to l'+h+X, h=π^\pm, K^\pm, h^\pm. We show that on deuteron target these asymmetries are particularly simple and determine the sum of the valence-quark Q_V=u_V+d_V transverse momentum depen…
The SIDIS transverse spin asymmetries weighted with powers of $P_T$, the hadron transverse momentum in the $γN$ reference system, have been introduced already twenty years ago and are considered quite interesting. While the amplitudes of the modulations in the azimuthal distribution of the hadrons are the ratios of convolutions over transverse momenta of the transverse--momentum dependent parton distributions and of the corresponding fragmentation functions, and can be evaluated analytically only making assumptions on the transverse--momentum dependence of these functions, the weighted asymmetr…
We present estimates of transverse single-spin asymmetry in prompt photon production in the scattering of low virtuality photons off a polarized proton target and discuss the possibility of using this as a probe to get information about the gluon Sivers function (GSF). Using a generalized parton model (GPM) framework, we estimate the asymmetries at electron-ion collider energy ($\sqrt{s}$ =140 GeV) taking into account both direct and resolved photon processes and find that the dominant contribution, up to $10\%$, comes from quark Sivers function (QSF) while the contribution from GSF is found t…
The $k_\perp$-moment of a quark's Sivers function is known to be related to the corresponding twist-three quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$. The two functions have been extracted from data for single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and in single-inclusive hadron production in $pp$ collisions, respectively. Performing a consistent comparison of the extracted functions, we find that they show a "sign mismatch": while the magnitude of the functions is roughly consistent, the $k_\perp$-moment of the Sivers function has opposite sign from that of $T_{q,F}…
We review our transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation formalism for heavy flavor dijet production at the EIC. In this formalism, we have calculated the heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, and in the resummed expression for the cross section. By establishing this formalism, we then study the effects of the mass corrections by providing predictions at the EIC for the massive case and for the case where the mass is neglected. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.
We perform a calculation of the Sivers function in a spectator model of the nucleon, with scalar and axial-vector diquarks. We make use of gluon rescattering to produce the nontrivial phases necessary to generate the Sivers function. The inclusion of axial-vector diquarks enables us to obtain a nonzero Sivers function for down quarks. Using the results of our model, we discuss the phenomenology of transvere single spin asymmetries in pi+, pi-, and pi0 production, which are currently analysed by the HERMES and COMPASS collaborations. We find that the inclusion of axial-vector diquarks substanti…
The physics of hadron single transverse spin asymmetries is discussed. Possible measurements of both the quark and gluon Sivers functions are proposed.
We extend the improved Collins-Soper-Sterman (iCSS) $W+Y$ construction recently presented in~\cite{Collins:2016hqq} to the case of polarized observables, where we focus in particular on the Sivers effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We further show how one recovers the expected leading-order collinear twist-3 result from a (weighted) $q_T$-integral of the differential cross section. We are also able to demonstrate the validity of the well-known relation between the (TMD) Sivers function and the (collinear twist-3) Qiu-Sterman function within the iCSS framework. This relation al…
The production of vector mesons in SIDIS is a particularly interesting channel to study the polarized fragmentation and related phenomena. Preliminary COMPASS results for the first measurement of inclusive $ρ^0$ Collins and Sivers transverse-spin asymmetries are presented here for the first time. The analysis is based on the data-set collected by COMPASS in $2010$ using a $160\, \rm{GeV}/c$ $μ^+$ beam and a transversely polarized $NH_3$ target. The asymmetries are extracted as function of Bjorken-$x$, of the total transverse momentum of the oppositely charged hadron pair and of the fraction of…
After reviewing the most important COMPASS results on transverse spin effects in SIDIS, I will present the recent work we have done on weighted Sivers asymmetries and "transversity induced" $Λ$ polarisation. Using the high statistics data collected in 2010 on a transversely polarised proton target COMPASS has evaluated the transverse momentum weighted Sivers asymmetries both in $x$- and in $z$-bins. The results are also compared with the standard unweighted asymmetries. Using the whole data sample collected over the years on transversely polarised deuteron and proton targets COMPASS has measur…
We study the Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We concentrate on the contribution from the photon-gluon fusion channel at ${\cal O}(α_{em}^2 α_s)$, where three-gluon correlation functions play a major role within the twist-3 collinear factorization formalism. We establish the correspondence between such a formalism with three gluon correlation functions and the usual transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism at moderate hadron transverse momenta. We derive the coefficient functions used in the usual TMD evolution formalism rela…
In this paper we briefly review the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model and its application to the study of azimuthal asymmetries in the distribution of leading hadrons (mainly pions) inside large transverse momentum jets inclusively produced in polarized proton-proton collisions. We put particular emphasis on the phenomenological interest of these observables, in combination with similar asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan processes and e+e- collisions, for the study of the universality properties of the transverse momentum dependen…
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. The result is used for making predictions for the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan process.
The transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of hadrons, when weighted with the hadron transverse momentum $P_T$, allow for the extraction of important transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions. In particular, the weighted Sivers asymmetries provide direct information on the Sivers function, which is a leading-twist distribution that arises from a correlation between the transverse momentum of an unpolarised quark in a transversely polarised nucleon and the spin of the nucleon. Using the high-statistics data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration in 201…
We consider single-inclusive forward pion production in high-energy proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies. A good baseline description of the transverse momentum distributions at high rapidity is obtained within Mueller's dipole formalism with an anomalous dimension incorporating an ``extended geometric scaling'' window between the saturation and DGLAP regimes. We then formulate pion production for transversely polarized projectiles within the same approach. We assume that an azimuthal, spin-dependent asymmetry arises from the so-called Sivers effect and investigate the single transverse-s…
Transverse single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive reactions are now considered to be directly related to the transverse momentum $k_{T}$ of the fundamental partons involved in the process. Several possible leading-twist QCD mechanisms have been proposed to explain the available data, in particular the Sivers effect which was resurrected recently. We show that from the measurement of transverse SSA in inclusive production of gauge bosons, one can learn more about the Sivers functions and possibly to achieve a reliable flavor separation.
At present, the Boer-Mulders (BM) function for a given quark flavour is extracted from data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) using the simplifying assumption that it is proportional to the Sivers function for that flavour. In a recent paper we suggested that the consistency of this assumption could be tested using information on so-called difference asymmetries, i.e. the difference between the asymmetries in the production of particles and their anti-particles. In this paper, using the SIDIS COMPASS deuteron data on the $\langle\cosϕ_h\rangle$, $\langle\cos 2 ϕ_h\rangle$ and…
Recently, Brodsky, Hwang and Schmidt have proposed a new mechanism that gives a transverse spin symmetry at leading twist in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. I show that the new mechanism is compatible with factorization and is due to an transverse-spin asymmetry in the k_T distribution of quarks in a hadron (the "Sivers asymmetry"). An earlier proof that the Sivers asymmetry vanishes because of time-reversal invariance is invalidated by the path-ordered exponential of the gluon field in the operator definition of parton densities. Instead, the time-reversal argument shows that the Si…
We perform numerical simulations of the Sivers effect from single spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes on transversely polarized protons. We consider colliding antiprotons and pions at different kinematic conditions of interest for the future planned experiments. We conventionally name "framework I" the results obtained when properly accounting for the various flavor dependent polarized valence contributions in the numerator of the asymmetry, and for the unpolarized nonvalence contribution in its denominator. We name "framework II" the results obtained when taking a suitable flavor average …
We examine in detail the diagrammatic mechanisms which provide the change of sign between the single transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and in the Drell-Yan process (DY). This asymmetry is known to arise due to the transverse spin dependence of the target proton combined with a T-odd complex phase. Using the discrete symmetry properties of transverse spinors, we show that the required complex phase originates in the denominators of rescattering diagrams and their respective cuts. For simplicity, we work in a model where the proton consists …
The large-$x$ behavior of the transverse-momentum dependent quark distributions is analyzed in the factorization-inspired perturbative QCD framework, particularly for the naive time-reversal-odd quark Sivers function which is responsible for the single transverse-spin asymmetries in various semi-inclusive hard processes. By examining the dominant hard gluon exchange Feynman diagrams, and using the resulting power counting rule, we find that the Sivers function has power behavior $(1-x)^4$ at $x \to 1$, which is one power of $(1-x)$ suppressed relative to the unpolarized quark distribution. The…
The Sivers effect describes the correlation of the unpolarized parton's transverse momentum with the transverse spin of the nucleon. It manifests as a sine modulation of the cross section for single hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on a transversely polarized nucleon with the azimuthal angle between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the nucleon spin ($φ_h$ and $φ_S$, respectively). It has been recently suggested that the Sivers effect can also be measured in two hadron SIDIS process as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both th…
Azimuthal correlations in two hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of unpolarized leptons off transversely polarized nucleon are discussed. Specifically, a simple approach for accessing ratios of structure functions corresponding to Sivers effect and transversity induced single spin azimuthal asymmetries to unpolarized structure functions is presented. This approach is then applied to a sample pseudo-data generated by a modified version of the LEPTO Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect. Using this data it is shown, that the azimuthal correlations in the Sivers-…
In the TMD approach, the average transverse momentum of the unpolarised TMD PDFs and FFs is crucial not only to reproduce unpolarised cross sections and hadron multiplicities, but also for the understanding of azimuthal and spin asymmetries. Information on these transverse momenta is nowadays obtained mainly by fitting multiplicities data for SIDIS, where the intrinsic motion in the initial parton distributions and in the hadronisation process are strongly correlated and difficult to estimate separately without ambiguities. In this contribution we discuss the consequences of this correlation e…
A major experimental program is presently underway worldwide to determine the fundamental non-perturbative functions, the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, which are vital for an understanding of the internal structure of the nucleon. However, at present, many simplifying assumptions are used in extracting these functions from the data. We demonstrate that if the binning of the data in Q^2 is small enough so that Q^2-evolution can be neglected inside a bin, then one can obtain stringent tests of these assumptions. Failure to satisfy these tests implies that the presently ext…
The Sivers effect in single hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a transversely polarized nucleon describes the modulation of the cross section with the sine of the azimuthal angle between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the nucleon spin ($\boldsymbol{P}_h$ and $φ_S$ respectively). This effect is attributed to the so-called Sivers parton distribution function of the nucleon. We employ a simple phenomenological parton model to derive the relevant cross section for two-hadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering including the Sivers effect. We …
The Sivers effect in polarized SIDIS can be measured in two hadron production as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both the total and the relative transverse momenta of the hadron pair, complementary to the conventional single hadron studies. In this talk we briefly present the results obtained in our recent work [1] and [2]. We also present the leading order parton model expression for the two hadron SIDIS cross section for different choices of the relative transverse momentum that dismiss the seeming contradiction of our results with previous work. Finally, w…
Information on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation functions and their transverse momentum dependence is mainly based on fitting single spin asymmetry data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Independent information, respectively on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation, can be obtained from Drell-Yan and $e^+e^-$ annihilation processes. In the SIDIS case, the transverse momentum of the final observed hadron, which is the quantity measured, is generated both by the average transverse momentum in the distribution and in the fragmentation func…
We study the azimuthal asymmetries for the distributions of leading pions inside a jet produced inclusively in high-energy proton-proton collisions within the framework of the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model. We present results for the RHIC center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 and 500 GeV, mainly for forward jet rapidities, in particular for the two mechanisms which dominate such asymmetries: the Sivers and the Collins effects. We also briefly discuss the case of inclusive jet production and, adopting the so-called colour gauge invariant parton model, we propose a ph…
