By using the Moutard transformation of two-dimensional Schroedinger operators we derive a procedure for constructing explicit examples of such operators with rational fast decaying potentials and degenerate $L_2$-kernels (this construction was sketched in arXiv:0706.3595) and show that if we take some of these potentials as the Cauchy data for the Novikov-Veselov equation (a two-dimensional version of the Korteweg-de Vries equation), then the corresponding solutions blow up in a finite time
We demonstrate how the Moutard transformation of two-dimensional Schrodinger operators acts on the Faddeev eigenfunctions on the zero energy level and present some explicitly computed examples of such eigenfunctions for smooth fast decaying potentials of operators with non-trivial kernel and for deformed potentials which correspond to blowing up solutions of the Novikov-Veselov equation.
In this paper, by means of similarity transformations we study exact analytical solutions for a generalized nonlinear Schr$\ddot{\mbox{o}}$dinger equation with variable coefficients. This equation appears in literature describing the evolution of coherent light in a nonlinear Kerr medium, Bose-Einstein condensates phenomena and high intensity pulse propagation in optical fibers. By restricting the coefficients to satisfy Ermakov-Riccati systems with multiparameter solutions, we present conditions for existence of explicit solutions with singularities and a family of oscillating periodic solito…
We study numerically the evolution of perturbed Korteweg-de Vries solitons and of well localized initial data by the Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation at different levels of the "energy" parameter $ E $. We show that as $ |E| \to \infty $, NV behaves, as expected, similarly to its formal limit, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. However at intermediate regimes, i.e. when $ | E | $ is not very large, more varied scenarios are possible, in particular, blow-ups are observed. The mechanism of the blow-up is studied.
We prove the existence of energy solutions of the energy critical focusing wave equation in R^3 which blow up exactly at x=t=0. They decompose into a bulk term plus radiation term. The bulk is a rescaled version of the stationary "soliton" type solution of the NLW. The construction depends crucially on the renormalization procedure of the "soliton" which we introduced in our companion paper on the wave map problem.

We study singularity formation in spherically symmetric solitons of the charge one sector of the (2+1) dimensional S^2 sigma model, also known as $\IC P^1$ wave maps, in the adiabatic limit. These equations are non-integrable, and so studies are performed numerically on radially symmetric solutions using an iterative finite differencing scheme. Analytic estimates are made by using an effective Lagrangian cutoff outside a ball of fixed radius. We show the geodesic approximation is valid when the cutoff is applied, with the cutoff approaching infinity linearly as the reciprocal of the initial ve…
We study singularity formation in spherically symmetric solitons of the (4+1) dimensional Yang Mills model and the charge two sector of the (2+1) dimensional S^2 sigma model, also known as $\IC P^1$ wave maps, in the adiabatic limit. These two models are very similar. Studies are performed numerically on radially symmetric solutions using an iterative finite differencing scheme. Predictions for the evolution toward a singularity are made from an effective Lagrangian and confirmed numerically. In both models a characterization of the shape of a time slice f(r,T) with T fixed is provided, and ul…
We study the long-time dynamics of complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) solitons, which are recognized because they blow-up in finite time. We establish stability properties at the H^1 level of regularity, uniformly away from each blow-up point. These new properties are used to prove that mKdV breathers are H^1 stable, improving our previous result, where we only proved H^2 stability. The main new ingredient of the proof is the use of a Bäcklund transformation which links the behavior of breathers, complex-valued solitons and small real-valued solutions of the mKdV equation. We als…
We consider the critical focusing wave equation $(-\partial_t^2+Δ)u+u^5=0$ in $\R^{1+3}$ and prove the existence of energy class solutions which are of the form [u(t,x)=t^\fracμ{2}W(t^μx)+η(t,x)] in the forward lightcone ${(t,x)\in\R\times \R^3: |x|\leq t, t\gg 1}$ where $W(x)=(1+(1/3)|x|^2)^{-(1/2)}$ is the ground state soliton, $μ$ is an arbitrary prescribed real number (positive or negative) with $|μ|\ll 1$, and the error $η$ satisfies [|\partial_t η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)} +|\nabla η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)}\ll 1,\quad B_t:={x\in\R^3: |x|<t}] for all $t\gg 1$. Furthermore, the kinetic energy of $…
We study existence of helical solitons in the vector modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations, one of which is integrable, whereas another one is non-integrable. The latter one describes nonlinear waves in various physical systems, including plasma and chains of particles connected by elastic springs. By using the dynamical system methods such as the blow-up near singular points and the construction of invariant manifolds, we construct helical solitons by the efficient shooting method. The helical solitons arise as the result of co-dimension one bifurcation and exist along a curve in the ve…
We study 2D and 3D localised oscillating patterns in a simple model system exhibiting nonlinear Faraday resonance. The corresponding amplitude equation is shown to have exact soliton solutions which are found to be always unstable in 3D. On the contrary, the 2D solitons are shown to be stable in a certain parameter range; hence the damping and parametric driving are capable of suppressing the nonlinear blowup and dispersive decay of solitons in two dimensions. The negative feedback loop occurs via the enslaving of the soliton's phase, coupled to the driver, to its amplitude and width.
Dispersive PDEs are important both in applications (wave phenomena e.g. in hy- drodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, Bose-Einstein condensates,...) and a mathematically very challenging class of partial differential equations, especially in the time dependent case. An important point with respect to applications is the stability of exact solutions like solitons. Whereas the linear or spectral stability can be addressed analytically in some situations, the proof of full nonlinear (in-)stability remains mostly an open question. In this paper, we numerically investi- gate the transverse …
Considered in this paper is the modified Camassa-Holm equation with cubic nonlinearity, which is integrable and admits the single peaked solitons and multi-peakon solutions. The short-wave limit of this equation is known as the short-pulse equation. The main investigation is the Cauchy problem of the modified Camassa-Holm equation with qualitative properties of its solutions. It is firstly shown that the equation is locally well-posed in a range of the Besov spaces. The blow-up scenario and the lower bound of the maximal time of existence are then determined. A blow-up mechanism for solutions …
