Orbits of coadjoint representations of classical compact Lie groups have a lot of applications. They appear in representation theory, geometrical quantization, theory of magnetism, quantum optics etc. As geometric objects the orbits were the subject of much study. However, they remain hard for calculation and application. We propose simple solutions for the following problems: an explicit parameterization of the orbit by means of a generalized stereographic projection, obtaining a Kählerian structure on the orbit, introducing basis two-forms for the cohomology group of the orbit.
In this article, we give a simple explicit construction of an affine slice for the coadjoint action of a certain class of biparabolic (also called seaweed) subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, this class includes all Borel subalgebras.
Let G_R be a Lie group acting on an oriented manifold M, and let $ω$ be an equivariantly closed form on M. If both G_R and M are compact, then the integral $\int_M ω$ is given by the fixed point integral localization formula (Theorem 7.11 in [BGV]). Unfortunately, this formula fails when the acting Lie group G_R is not compact: there simply may not be enough fixed points present. A proposed remedy is to modify the action of G_R in such a way that all fixed points are accounted for. Let G_R be a real semisimple Lie group, possibly noncompact. One of the most important examples of equivariantly …
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group and let $\g =\n_- +\hh +\n$ be a triangular decomposition of $\g= \hbox{Lie}\,G$. Let $\b =\hh +\n$ and let $H,N,B$ be Lie subgroups of $G$ corresponding respectively to $\hh,\n$ and $\b$. We may identify $\n_-$ with the dual space to $\n$. The coadjoint action of $N$ on $\n_-$ extends to an action of $B$ on $\n_-$. There exists a unique nonempty Zariski open orbit $X$ of $B$ on $\n_-$. Any $N$-orbit in $X$ is a maximal coadjoint orbit of $N$ in $\n_-$. The cascade of orthogonal roots defines a cross-section $\r_-^{\times}$ of the set of such orbits leading to…
The purpose of this paper is to bring together various loose ends in the theory of integrable systems. For a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, we obtain several results on completeness of homogeneous Poisson-commutative subalgebras of ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ on coadjoint orbits. This concerns, in particular, Mishchenko-Fomenko and Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebras.
We prove that any coadjoint orbit with real eigenvalues of a complex semisimple Lie group, equipped with the real part of the canonical holomorphic symplectic form, is symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of a (partial) flag manifold. Moreover, we generalize this result to hyperbolic orbits in a real semisimple Lie algebra.
Let $G$ be a complex simply-connected semisimple Lie group and let $\frak{g}= Lie G$. Let $\frak{g} = \frak{n}_- +\frak{h} + \frak{n}$ be a triangular decomposition of $\frak{g}$. One readily has that $Cent\,U({\frak n})$ is isomorphic to the ring $S({\frak n})^{\frak\n}$ of symmetric invariants. Using the cascade ${\cal B}$ of strongly orthogonal roots, some time ago we proved that $S({\frak n})^{{\frak n}$ is a polynomial ring $\Bbb C [ξ_1,...,ξ_m]$ where $m$ is the cardinality of ${\cal B}$. Using this result we establish that the maximal coadjoint of $N = exp \frak {n}$ has codimension $m$…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a finite-dimensional real or complex Lie algebra, and let $μ\in \mathfrak{g}^{*}$. In the first part of the paper, the relation is discussed between the derived algebra of the stabilizer of $μ$ and the set of coadjoint orbits which have the same dimension as the orbit of $μ$. In the second part, semisimple Lie algebras are considered, and the relation is discussed between the derived algebra of a centralizer and sheets.

We prove that the canonical dimension of an admissible Banach space or a locally analytic representation of an arbitrary semisimple p-adic Lie group is either zero or at least half the dimension of a non-zero coadjoint orbit. This extends the results of Ardakov-Wadsley and Schmidt in the split semisimple case.
Let p be a maximal truncated parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie Algebra. It was shown in many cases that the Poisson centre Y(p) is a polynomial algebra. We construct a slice for the coadjoint action of p, thus extending a theorem of Kostant. The role of the principal sl_2-triple is played by an adapted pair.
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra $g$ and $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ with $Lie(P)=p$. The parabolic contraction of $g$ is the semi-direct product of $p$ and a $p$-module $g/p$ regarded as an abelian ideal. We are interested in the polynomial invariants of the adjoint and coadjoint representations of $q$. In the adjoint case the algebra of invariants is easy to describe and turns out to be a graded polynomial algebra. The coadjoint case is more complicated. Here we found a connection between symmetric invariants of $q$ and symmetric invariants of centralise…
Nilpotent Lie groups with stepwise square integrable representations were recently investigated by J.A.~Wolf. We give an alternative approach to these representations by relating them to the stratifications of the duals of nilpotent Lie algebras, thus proving that they correspond to a subset with relative Hausdorff topology, dense interior, and total Plancherel measure in the unitary dual of the Lie group under consideration.
Consider the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a Lie group $G$ to its subgroup $H$. Kirillov's revolutionary idea on the orbit method suggests that the multiplicity of an irreducible $H$-module $ν$ occurring in the restriction $π|_H$ could be read from the coadjoint action of $H$ on $O^G \cap pr^{-1}(O^H)$ provided $π$ and $ν$ are "geometric quantizations" of a $G$-coadjoint orbit $O^G$ and an $H$-coadjoint orbit $O^H$,respectively, where $pr: \sqrt{-1} g^{\ast} \to \sqrt{-1} h^{\ast}$ is the projection dual to the inclusion $h \subset g$ of Lie algebras. Such results…
The coadjoint representation of a connected algebraic group $Q$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak q$ is a thrilling and fascinating object. Symmetric invariants of $\mathfrak q$ (= $\mathfrak q$-invariants in the symmetric algebra $S(\mathfrak q)$) can be considered as a first approximation to the understanding of the coadjoint action $(Q:\mathfrak q^*)$ and coadjoint orbits. In this article, we study a class of non-reductive Lie algebras, where the description of the symmetric invariants is possible and the coadjoint representation has a number of nice invariant-theoretic properties. If $G$ is a se…
We study a contraction of the principal series representations of a noncompact semisimple Lie group to the unitary irreducible representations of its Cartan motion group by means of the Berezin-Weyl quantization on the coadjoint orbits associated with these representations.
The purpose of this paper is to prove Duflo's conjecture for $(G,π, AN)$ where $G$ is a simple Lie group of Hermitian type and $π$ is a discrete series of $G$ and $AN$ is the maximal exponential solvable subgroup for an Iwasawa decomposition $G=KAN$. This is essentially reduced from the following general theorem we prove in this paper: let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group . Then a strongly elliptic $G$-coadjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}$ is holomorphic if and only if $\text{p}(\mathcal{O})$ is an open $AN$-coadjoint orbit, where $\text{p} : \mathfrak{g}^* \longrightarrow (\mathfrak{a}\oplus\m…
Using the notion of a Lagrangian covering, W. Graham and D. Vogan proposed a method of constructing representations from the coadjoint orbits for a complex semisimple Lie group $G$. When the coadjoint orbit $\calO$ is nilpotent, a representation of $G$ is attached to each orbital variety of $\calO$ in this way. In the setting of classical groups, we show that whenever it is possible to carry out the Graham-Vogan construction for an orbital variety of a spherical $\mathcal{O}$, its infinitesimal character lies in a set of characters attached to $\mathcal{O}$ by W. M. McGovern. Furthermore, we s…
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with finite component group, and let $K<G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. We obtain a quantisation commutes with reduction result for actions by $G$ on manifolds of the form $M = G\times_K N$, where $N$ is a compact prequantisable Hamiltonian $K$-manifold. The symplectic form on $N$ induces a closed two-form on $M$, which may be degenerate. We therefore work with presymplectic manifolds, where we take a presymplectic form to be a closed two-form. For complex semisimple groups and semisimple groups with discrete series, the main result reduces to results with a…
For any involution $σ$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, one constructs a non-reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak k$, which is called a $\mathbb Z_2$-contraction of $\mathfrak g$. In this paper, we attack the problem of describing maximal commutative subalgebras of the Poisson algebra $S(\mathfrak k)$. This is closely related to the study of the coadjoint representation of $\mathfrak k$ and the set, $\mathfrak k^*_{reg}$, of the regular elements of $\mathfrak k^*$. By our previous results, in the context of $\mathbb Z_2$-contractions, the argument shift method provides maximal commutativ…
Let M be a Galois cover of a nilpotent coadjoint orbit of a complex semisimple Lie group. We define the notion of a PERFECT Dixmier algebra for M and show how this produces a graded (non-local) equivariant star product on M with several very nice properties. This is part of a larger program we have been developing for working out the orbit method for nilpotent orbits.
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple algebraic group of adjoint type defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of positive characteristic. The characteristic $p$ is very good for $G$ when $p$ is suitably large and, if $G$ is of type $A_n$, $p$ does not divide $n+1$. The majority of results concerning the geometric structure of algebraic groups in positive characteristic are valid only in very good characteristic. We demonstrate that the dual nilcone $\mathcal{N}^* \subseteq \mathfrak{g}^*$ is a normal variety in certain characteristics which are not very good for $G$. As an application, we e…
Let $G_n=U(n)\ltimes {\mathbb H}_n $ be the semi-direct product of the unitary group acting by automorphisms on the Heisenberg group ${\mathbb H}_n$. According to Lipsman, the unitary dual $\widehat {G_n} $ of $G_n $ is in one to one correspondence with the space of admissible coadjoint orbits $\mathfrak g_n^\ddagger /G_n $ of $G_n $. In this paper, we determine the topology of the space $\mathfrak g_n^\ddagger /G_n $ and we show that the correspondence with $\widehat {G_n} $ is a homeomorphism.
We prove that the canonical dimension of a coadmissible representation of a semisimple $p$-adic Lie group in a $p$-adic Banach space is either zero or at least half the dimension of a non-zero coadjoint orbit. To do this we establish analogues for $p$-adically completed enveloping algebras of Bernstein's inequality for modules over Weyl algebras, the Beilinson-Bernstein localisation theorem and Quillen's Lemma about the endomorphism ring of a simple module over an enveloping algebra.
The minimal representation of a semisimple Lie group is a 'small' infinite-dimensional irreducible unitary representation. It is thought to correspond to the minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit in Kirillov's orbit philosophy. The Segal-Bargmann transform is an intertwining integral transformation between two different models of the minimal representation for Hermitian Lie groups of tube type. In this paper we construct a Fock model for the minimal representation of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(m,2|2n)$. We also construct an integral transform which intertwines the Schrödi…
For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. Inclusion relation on orbital variety closures defines a partial order on Young tableaux. Our aim is to describe this order. The paper is devoted to the combinatorial description of induced Duflo order on Young tableaux (the order generated by inclusion of generating subspaces of orbital varieties). Th…
Double Bruhat cells in a semisimple group are intersections of cells in two Bruhat decompositions corresponding to two opposite Borel subgroups. They form a geometric framework for the study of total positivity in semisimple groups; they are also closely related to symplectic leaves in the corresponding Poisson-Lie groups. The term "cells" might be misleading because their topology can be quite non-trivial. As a first step towards understanding this topology, we enumerate the connected components of real double Bruhat cells. This result extends (from the simply-laced case to the general one) a…
Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group (not necessarily connected), let K be a maximal compact subgroup, and let A be a finitely generated Abelian group. We prove that the conjugation orbit space Hom(A,K)/K is a strong deformation retract of the GIT quotient space Hom(A,G)//G. As a corollary, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the character variety Hom(A,G)//G to be irreducible when G is connected and semisimple. For a general connected reductive G, analogous conditions are found to be sufficient for irreducibility, when A is free abelian.
We develop an approach to the character theory of certain classes of finite and profinite groups based on the construction of a Lie algebra associated to such a group, but without making use of the notion of a polarization which is central to the classical orbit method. Instead, Kirillov's character formula becomes the fundamental object of study. Our results are then used to produce an alternate proof of the orbit method classification of complex irreducible representations of p-groups of nilpotence class less than p, where p is a prime, and of continuous complex irreducible representations o…
Using Lusztig's total positivity in split real Lie groups V. Fock and A. Goncharov have introduced spaces of positive (framed) representations. For general semisimple Lie groups a generalization of Lusztig's total positivity was recently introduced by O. Guichard and A. Wienhard. They also introduced the associated space of positive representations. Here we consider the corresponding spaces of positive framed representations of the fundamental group of a punctured surface. We give several parametrizations of the spaces of framed positive representations. Using these parametrizations, we descri…
In this paper, we translate the Springer theory of Weyl group representations into the language of symplectic topology. Given a semisimple complex group G, we describe a Lagrangian brane in the cotangent bundle of the adjoint quotient g/G that produces the perverse sheaves of Springer theory. The main technical tool is an analysis of the Fourier transform for constructible sheaves from the perspective of the Fukaya category. Our results can be viewed as a toy model of the quantization of Hitchin fibers in the Geometric Langlands program.
For any nilpotent Lie group $G$ we provide a description of the image of its $C^*$-algebra through its operator-valued Fourier transform. Specifically, we show that $C^*(G)$ admits a finite composition series such that that the spectra of the corresponding quotients are Hausdorff sets in the relative topology, defined in terms of the fine stratification of the space of coadjoint orbits of $G$, and the canonical fields of elementary $C^*$-algebras defined by the successive subquotients are trivial. We give a description of the image of the Fourier transform as a $C^*$-algebra of piecewise conti…
Let F be an algebraically closed field and let G be a semisimple F-algebraic group for which the characteristic of F is *very good*. If X in Lie(G) = Lie(G)(F) is a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra of G, and if C is the centralizer in G of X, we show that (i) the root datum of a Levi factor of C, and (ii) the component group C/C^o both depend only on the Bala-Carter label of X; i.e. both are independent of very good characteristic. The result in case (ii) depends on the known case when G is (simple and) of adjoint type. The proofs are achieved by studying the centralizer C of a nilpotent s…
