We present a detailed ARPES investigation of the RTe3 family, which sets this system as an ideal "textbook" example for the formation of a nesting driven Charge Density Wave (CDW). This family indeed exhibits the full range of phenomena that can be associated to CDW instabilities, from the opening of large gaps on the best nested parts of Fermi Surface (FS) (up to 0.4eV), to the existence of residual metallic pockets. ARPES is the best suited technique to characterize these features, thanks to its unique ability to resolve the electronic structure in k-space. An additional advantage of RTe3 is that the band structure can be very accurately described by a simple 2D tight-binding (TB) model, which allows one to understand and easily reproduce many characteristics of the CDW. In this paper, we first establish the main features of the electronic structure, by comparing our ARPES measurements with Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital band calculations. We use this to define the validity and limits of the TB model. We then present a complete description of the CDW properties and, for the first time, of their strong evolution as a function of R. Using simple models, we are able to reproduce perfectly the evolution of gaps in k-space, the evolution of the CDW wave vector with R and the shape of the residual metallic pockets. Finally, we give an estimation of the CDW interaction parameters and find that the change in the electronic density of states n(Ef), due to lattice expansion when different R ions are inserted, has the correct order of magnitude to explain the evolution of the CDW properties.
In contrast to our recent finding of an X-point band gap in divalent hexaborides, we report here that angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data shows that the gap is absent for trivalent LaB$_6$ and is absent or nearly so for mixed valent SmB$_6$. This finding demonstrates a nontrivial evolution of the band structure from divalent to trivalent hexaborides.
Electronic structure of crystalline materials is their fundamental characteristic which is the basis of almost all their physical and chemical properties. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the main experimental tool to study all electronic structure aspects with resolution in k-space. However, its application to three-dimensional (3D) materials suffers from a fundamental problem of ill-defined surface-perpendicular wavevector kz. Here, we achieve sharp definition of kz to enable precise navigation in 3D k space by pushing ARPES into the soft-X-ray photon energy range. Essent…
Time-resolved ARPES gives access to the band structure and ultrafast dynamics of excited electronic states in solids. The orbital character of the bands close to the Fermi level is essential to understand the origin of several exotic phenomena in quantum materials. By performing polarization dependent time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and by analyzing the chirality of the photoelectron yield for two different crystal orientations, we identify the orbital character of bands below and above the chemical potential for the Dirac semimetal BaNiS2. Our results illustrate how the co…
In all iron pnictides, the positions of the ligand alternatively above and below the Fe plane create 2 inequivalent Fe sites. This results in 10 Fe 3d bands in the electronic structure. However, they do not all have the same status for an ARPES experiment. There are interference effects between the 2 Fe that modulate strongly the intensity of the bands and that can even switch their parity. We give a simple description of these effects, notably showing that ARPES polarization selection rules in these systems cannot be applied by reference to a single Fe ion. We show that ARPES data for the ele…
It is well known that translational symmetry-breaking disorder will disrupt ARPES spectra up to the point where they become invisible. However, a theoretical framework to capture this phenomenon has been largely missing. Here, based on a rigorous theory of the ARPES process, we provide this much-needed framework. In particular, we show how the frequently used sudden electron approximation has to be modified in this situation. Our main result is an argument that links the photoemission line broadening with an operator content of a disorder operator and so with the criticality of the correspondi…
Electronic structures of a charge-density-wave CDW system CeTe_2-xSb_x (x=0, 0.05) have been investigated by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The observed Fermi surface (FS) agrees very well with the calculated FS for the undistorted CeTe_2 both in shapes and sizes. The metallic states crossing the Fermi level(E_F) are observed in ARPES. The carriers near E_F have mainly the Te(1) 5p character, with the negligible contribution from Ce 4f states to the CDW formation. The supercell (shadow) bands and the corresponding very weak FS's are found to arise from band-foldin…
We utilized high-resolution resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the band structure and hybridization effect of the heavy-fermion compound Ce2IrIn8. We observe a nearly flat band at the binding energy of 7 meV below the coherent temperature Tcoh ~ 40 K, which characterizes the electrical resistance maximum indicating the onset temperature of hybridization. However, the Fermi vector kF and the Fermi surface (FS) volume have little change around Tcoh, challenging the widely believed evolution from a high-temperature small FS to a low-temperature large FS. Our exper…

ARPES experiments on iron based superconductors show that the differences between the measured and calculated electronic band structures look insignificant but can be crucial for understanding of the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Here we focus on those differences for 111 and 122 compounds and discuss the observed correlation of the experimental band structure with the superconductivity.
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results on thin films of the three-dimensional manganite perovskite La1-xSrxMnO3, with TC = 240 K. In the low-binding energy region, we found two energy bands, one dispersing along the (100) sample surface and the other along the normal to the surface. Through a detailed polarization-dependent analysis, we have determined the symmetries of the two bands. The initial states associated with the band that disperses along the surface are dominantly odd with respect to the (110) mirror plane and even with respect to the (010) mirror plane. Based …
Discrepancies in the low-energy quasiparticle dispersion extracted from angle resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and quantum oscillation data are common and have long haunted the field of quantum matter physics. Here, we directly test the consistency of results from these three techniques by comparing data from the correlated metal Sr$_2$RhO$_4$. Using established schemes for the interpretation of the experimental data, we find good agreement for the Fermi surface topography and carrier effective masses. Hence, the apparent absence of such an agreement in other quantum mat…
We show that the unusual observations of a pseudogap in the normal state of underdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+delta (BiSCO) using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is consistent with a new band structure for the cuprate superconductors in which the x2-y2 and z2 bands are seen to cross at the Fermi level. Limitations in the experimental method prevent the narrow 3D z2 band from being fully resolved, leading instead to a broad background with "stepfunction" character. As a consequence, the Fermi surface is mis-assigned and a pseudogap of approximately d-wave symmetry develops.
Strongly correlated topological surface states are promising platforms for next-generation quantum applications, but they remain elusive in real materials. The correlated Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ is one of the most promising candidates, with theoretically predicted heavy Dirac surface states supported by transport and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. However, a puzzling discrepancy appears between STM and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments on SmB$_6$. Although ARPES detects spin-textured surface states, their velocity is an order of magnitude higher than expected, …
Despite many ARPES investigations of iron pnictides, the structure of the electron pockets is still poorly understood. By combining ARPES measurements in different experimental configurations, we clearly resolve their elliptic shape. Comparison with band calculation identify a deep electron band with the dxy orbital and a shallow electron band along the perpendicular ellipse axis with the dxz/dyz orbitals. We find that, for both electron and hole bands, the lifetimes associated with dxy are longer than for dxz/dyz. This suggests that the two types of orbitals play different roles in the electr…
Sr2IrO4 is characterized by a large spin-orbit coupling, which gives rise to bands with strongly entangled spin and orbital characters, called J=1/2 and J=3/2. We use light-polarization dependent ARPES to study directly the orbital character of these bands and fully map out their dispersion. We observe bands in very good agreement with our cluster dynamical mean-field theory calculations. We show that the J=1/2 band, the closest to the Fermi level Ef, is dominated by dxz character along kx and dyz along ky. This is actually in agreement with an isotropic J=1/2 character on average, but this la…
Soft X-ray Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy is applied to study in-plane band dispersions of Nickel as a function of probing depth. Photon energies between 190 and 780 eV were used to effectively probe up to 3-7 layers. The results show layer dependent band dispersion of the Delta_2 minority-spin band which crosses the Fermi level in 3 or more layers, in contrast to known top 1-2 layers dispersion obtained using ultra-violet rays. The layer dependence corresponds to an increased value of exchange splitting and suggests reduced correlation effects in the bulk compared to the surface.
The electronic structure of single crystals Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_2$, which are closely related to the superconducting Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$.$y$H$_2$O ($T_c \sim 5K$), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface is found to be consistent with the prediction of a local density band theory, the energy dispersion is highly renormalized, with an anisotropy along the two principle axes ($Γ$-$K$, $Γ$-$M$). Our ARPES result also indicates that an extended flat band is formed slightly above $E_F$ along $Γ$-$K$. In addition, an unusual band splitting is observed in th…
Among the quasi one-dimensional transition metal tetrachalcogenides (MSe$_4$)$_n$I (M=Nb,Ta), the $n=3$ compounds are the only ones not displaying charge density waves. Instead, they show structural transitions with puzzling transport behavior. They are semiconductors at the lowest temperatures, but their transport gaps are significantly smaller than those inferred from ARPES and optical conductivity. Recently, a metallic polytype of (TaSe$_4$)$_3$I has been found with ferromagnetism and superconductivity coexisting at low temperature, in contrast to previous reports. In this work we present d…
The charge density wave (CDW) phase in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ is investigated using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and neutron scattering measurements. Our ARPES results reveal a clear temperature dependence of the chemical potential of the system. They also demonstrate specific changes encountered by the Se 4$p$ valence and Ti 3$d$ conduction bands as the temperature of the system is decreased through $T_{\text{CDW}}$. The valence band undergoes a downward shift, whereas the conduction band remains unaffected. The crystal structure in the CDW state shows a distinct split of the Ti-S…
Considering the electron states inside and outside the solid, we derive a formula of photoemission intensity. A general theoretical way to determine electronic structures of solids from ARPES experiments is outlined. It is shown that the spectral function inside the solids cannot be measured directly by ARPES, the effects of free electron states on the electronic structure observed by ARPES measurements must be considered, and the results from ARPES experiments cannot be understood until these results have been made consistent with a theoretical calculation.
ARPES is a priori a technique of choice to measure the Fermi velocities vF in metals. In correlated systems, it is interesting to compare this experimental value to that obtained in band structure calculations, as deviations are usually taken as a good indicator of the presence of strong electronic correlations. Nevertheless, it is not always straightforward to extract vF from ARPES spectra. We study here the case of layered cobaltates, an interesting family of correlated metals. We compare the results obtained by standard methods, namely the fit of spectra at constant momentum k (energy distr…
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to highlight an anomalously large band renormalization at high binding energies in cuprate superconductors: the high energy "waterfall" or high energy anomaly (HEA). The anomaly is present for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates as well as the half-filled parent insulators with different energy scales arising on either side of the phase diagram. While photoemission matrix elements clearly play a role in changing the aesthetic appearance of the band dispersion, i.e. creating a "waterfall"-like appearance, they provide an inade…
Present-day angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has offered a tremendous advance in the understanding of electron energy spectra in cuprate superconductors and some related compounds. However, in high magnetic field, magnetic quantum oscillations at low temperatures indicate the existence of small electron (hole) Fermi pockets seemingly missing in ARPES of hole (electron) doped cuprates. Here ARPES and quantum oscillations are reconciled in the framework of an impurity band in the charge-transfer Mott-Hubbard insulator.
An influence of the electron-phonon interaction on excitation spectrum and damping in a narrow band electron subsystem of cuprates has been investigated. Within the framework of the t-J model an approach to solving a problem of account of both strong electron correlations and local electron-phonon binding with characteristic Einstein mode $ω_0$ in the normal state has been presented. In approximation Hubbard-I it was found an exact solution to the polaron bands. We established that in the low-dimensional system with a pure kinematic part of Hamiltonian a complicated excitation spectrum is real…
Recently there has been a renewed interest in the charge density wave transition of TiSe2, fuelled by the possibility that this transition may be driven by the formation of an excitonic insulator or even an excitonic condensate. We show here that the recent ARPES measurements on TiSe2 can also be interpreted in terms of an alternative scenario, in which the transition is due to a combination of Jahn-Teller effects and exciton formation. The hybrid exciton-phonons which cause the CDW formation interpolate between a purely structural and a purely electronic type of transition. Above the transiti…

Pump-probe techniques with high temporal resolution allow one to drive a system of interest out of equilibrium and at the same time, probe its properties. Recent advances in these techniques open the door to studying new, non-equilibrium phenomena such as Floquet topological insulators and superconductors. These advances also necessitate the development of theoretical tools for understanding the experimental findings and predicting new ones. In the present work, we provide a theoretical foundation to understand the non-equilibrium behavior of a Dirac system. We present detailed numerical calcu…
Transport experiments in twisted bilayer graphene revealed multiple superconducting domes separated by correlated insulating states. These properties are generally associated with strongly correlated states in a flat mini-band of the hexagonal moiré superlattice as it was predicted by band structure calculations. Evidence for such a flat band comes from local tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements, reporting two or more sharp peaks in the density of states that may be associated with closely spaced van Hove singularities. Direct momentum resolved measurements proved…
The electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental spectra reveal significant discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the measured dispersions can be consistently mapped onto the one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite doping. This interpretation is further supported by a remarkable transfer of spectral weight as function of temperature. The ARPES data thus show spectroscopic signatures of spin-charge separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width.
The electronic structure of a quantum spin liquid compound, EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, has been studied with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, together with two other Pd(dmit)2 salts in the valence bond solid or antiferromagnetic state. We have resolved several bands that have negligible dispersions and fit well to the calculated energy levels of an isolated [Pd(dmit)2]2 dimer. EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2 being a Mott insulator, its lower Hubbard band is identified, and there is a small gap of ~ 50 meV between this band and the chemical potential. Moreover, the spectral features exhibit polaronic b…
Electronic spectra of typical single FeSe layer superconductors obtained from ARPES data reveal several puzzles: what is the origin of shallow and the so called "replica" bands near M-point and why the hole-like Fermi surfaces near $Γ$-point are absent. Our extensive LDA+DMFT calculations show that correlation effects on Fe-3d states can almost quantitatively reproduce rather complicated band structure, which is observed in ARPES, in close vicinity of the Fermi level for FeSe/STO and K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$. Rather unusual shallow electron-like bands around the M(X)-point in the Brillouin zone…
In the quest for primary factors which determine the transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors (HTSC), we develop a phenomenological picture combining experimental results from muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), neutron and Raman scattering, and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements, guided by an analogy with superfluid $^{4}$He. The 41 meV neutron resonance mode and the ARPES superconducting coherence peak (SCP) can be viewed as direct observations of spin and charge soft modes, respectively, appearing near ($π,π$) and the center of the Brillouin zone, havi…
The electronic structure of ThRu2Si2 was studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with incident photon energies of hn=655-745 eV. Detailed band structure and the three-dimensional shapes of Fermi surfaces were derived experimentally, and their characteristic features were mostly explained by means of band structure calculations based on the density functional theory. Comparison of the experimental ARPES spectra of ThRu2Si2 with those of URu2Si2 shows that they have considerably different spectral profiles particularly in the energy range of 1 eV from the Fermi level, sugges…
To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$, we have made a combined study using density functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ of Yb $4f$ electrons as large as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termi…
We explore the success of various versions of the one-band t-J model in explaining the full spectral functions found in angle-resolved photoemission spectra for the prototypical, quasi two-dimensional, tetragonal, antiferromagnetic insulator $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$. After presenting arguments justifying our extraction of $A(k,ω)$ from the experimental data, we rely on exact-diagonalization results from studies of a square 32-site lattice, the largest cluster for which such information is presently available, to perform this comparison. Our work leads us to believe that (i) a one-band model that includ…
We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which are isostructural to the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ of the 122 family of ferropnictide superconductors. We show the existence of a strongly $k_z$-dependent band gap with a minimum at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with their semiconducting properties. Despite the half-filling of the electronic 3$d$ shell, we show that the band structure in these materials is almost not renormalized from the Kohn-Sham bands of density functional theory. Our photon energy dependent study provi…
We have performed systematic tight-binding (TB) analyses of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra of transition-metal (TM) oxides A$M$O$_3$ ($M=$ Ti, V, Mn, and Fe) with the perovskite-type structure and compared the obtained parameters with those obtained from configuration-interaction (CI) cluster-model analyses of photoemission spectra. The values of $ε_d-ε_p$ from ARPES are found to be similar to the charge-transfer energy $Δ$ from O $2p$ orbitals to empty TM 3d orbitals and much larger than $Δ-U/2$ ($U$: on-site Coulomb energy) expected for Mott-Hubbard-type compou…
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) to measure the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure of photo-excited K0.3MoO3. Prompt depletion of the Charge Density Wave (CDW) condensate launches coherent oscillations of the amplitude mode, observed as a 1.7-THz-frequency modulation of the bonding band position. In contrast, the anti-bonding band oscillates at about half this frequency. We attribute these oscillations to coherent excitation of phasons via parametric amplification of phase fluctuations.
We present an angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) study on the layered transition-metal dichalcogenide 1{\em T}-TaS$_{1.2}$Se$_{0.8}$ in the metallic commensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. A model calculation of the spectral function captures the main features of the ARPES spectra well qualitatively, that is, the gross splits of unreconstructed band structure in the absence of the CDW superlattice. The observed enhancement of the size of the gap between the lower and middle fragments of the Ta {\em 5d} band along the $Γ$M line by cooling is interpreted in terms of the increase in the C…
In connection with the experiment on oxygen isotope effect of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we theoretically study the isotope-induced band shift in ARPES by the Hartree-Fork and quantum Monte Carlo methods. We find that this band shift can be clarified based on a quadratically coupled electron-phonon (e-ph) model. The large ratio of band shift versus phonon energy change is connected with the softening effect of phonon, and the positive-negative sign change is due to the momentum dependence of the e-ph coupling.
We present new high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data for K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ (blue bronze) and propose a novel theoretical description of these results. The observed Fermi surface, with two quasi-one-dimensional sheets, is consistent with a ladder material with a weak inter-ladder coupling. Hence, we base our description on spectral properties of one-dimensional ladders. The marked broadening of the ARPES lineshape, a significant fraction of an eV, is interpreted in terms of spin-charge separation. A high energy feature, which is revealed for the first time in the spectra near…
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy it is revealed that in the vicinity of optimal doping the electronic structure of La2-xSrxCuO4 cuprate undergoes an electronic reconstruction associated with a wave vector q_a=(pi, 0). The reconstructed Fermi surface and folded band are distinct to the shadow bands observed in BSCCO cuprates and in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 with x <= 0.12, which shift the primary band along the zone diagonal direction. Furthermore the folded bands appear only with q_a=(pi, 0) vector, but not with q_b= (0, pi). We demonstrate that the absence of q_b reconstruction i…
The emergence of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) made it possible to observe electronic dispersion directly as a spectral function map. On the other hand, a spectral function map can be obtained theoretically, for example, in the LDA+DMFT method. The electronic band on such a map is characterized not only by its energy position at a given $k$-point, but also by its width and intensity. To illustrate a way of quantitative comparison of theoretical spectral functions and ARPES data, spectral functions obtained by the LDA+DMFT method are chosen. It is shown that the theoretical …
The electron-doped Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) (PCCO) compound in the pseudogap regime (x~0.15) was investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and the generalized dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) with the k-dependent self-energy (LDA+DMFT+Σ_k). Model parameters (hopping integral values and local Coulomb interaction strength) for the effective one-band Hubbard model were calculated by the local density approximation (LDA) with numerical renormalization group method (NRG) employed as an "impurity solver" in DMFT computations. An "external" k-dependent self-energy Σ_k was used …

In this contribution we review recent ARPES results on the dressing of the charge carriers in high-temperature superconductors. After an introduction into the cuprates and their electronic structure, ARPES, the spectral function and the self-energy function in the normal state and in the superconducting state is discussed.. Finally results on the dressing of the charge carriers in the system Bi2Sr2caCu2O7 at the nodal and the antinodal point are presented.
We report a comprehensive study of the paradigmatic quasi-1D compound (TaSe4)2I performed by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find it to be a zero-gap semiconductor in the non-distorted structure, with non-negligible interchain coupling. Theory and experiment support a Peierls-like scenario for the CDW formation below T_CDW = 263 K, where the incommensurability is a direct consequence of the finite interchain coupling. The formation of small polarons, strongly suggested by the ARPES data, explains the puzzling…
BiTeI has a layered and non-centrosymmetric structure where strong spin-orbit interaction leads to a giant spin splitting in the bulk bands. Here we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data in the UV and soft x-ray regime that clearly disentangle the surface from the bulk electronic structure. Spin-resolved UV-ARPES measurements on opposite, non-equivalent surfaces show identical spin structures, thus clarifying the surface state character. Soft x-ray ARPES data clearly reveal the spindle-torus shape of the bulk Fermi surface, induced by the spin-orbit interaction.
We compare electronic structures of single FeSe layer films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate (FeSe/STO) and K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ superconductors obtained from extensive LDA and LDA+DMFT calculations with the results of ARPES experiments. It is demonstrated that correlation effects on Fe-3d states are sufficient in principle to explain the formation of the shallow electron -- like bands at the M(X)-point. However, in FeSe/STO these effects alone are apparently insufficient for the simultaneous elimination of the hole -- like Fermi surface around the $Γ$-point which is not observed in ARPES experiments…
Systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments have been carried out to investigate the bulk and (100) surface electronic structures of a topological mixed-valence insulator candidate, YbB6. The bulk states of YbB6 were probed with bulk-sensitive soft X-ray ARPES, which show strong three-dimensionality as required by cubic symmetry. Surprisingly the measured Yb 4f states are located around 1 eV and 2.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), instead of being near EF as indicated by first principle calculations. The dispersive bands near EF are B 2p states, which hybridize with…
In the course of seeking the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity in cuprate high temperature superconductors, the pseudogap phase\textemdash the very abnormal 'normal' state on the hole-doped side\textemdash has proven to be as big of a quandary as superconductivity itself. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool for assessing the momentum-dependent phenomenology of the pseudogap, and recent technological developments have permitted a more detailed understanding. This report reviews recent progress in understanding the relationship between superconductivity …
We performed in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and spin-resolved ARPES (SARPES) experiments to investigate the relationship between electronic band structures and ferromagnetism in SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin films. Our high-quality ARPES and SARPES results show clear spin-lifted band structures. The spin polarization is strongly dependent on momentum around the Fermi level, whereas it becomes less dependent at high-binding energies. This experimental observation matches our dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) results very well. As temperature increases from low to the Curie te…
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV…
We have analyzed the quasiparticle dispersion and ARPES-spectral density for Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Ca2CuO2Cl2 antiferromagnetic insulators along basic symmetric directions of the Brillouin zone (BZ) in a framework of an extended tight binding method (ETBM) with explicit account for intracell strong electron correlations. The quasiparticle dispersion is in a good agreement with ARPES- data. At the top of valence band we found a narrow impurity-like virtual level with the spectral weight proportional to the concentration of spin fluctuations. A pseudogap between the virtual level and the top of the val…
The electronic structure of Na2Ti2Sb2O, a parent compound of the newly discovered titanium-based oxypnictide superconductors, is studied by photon energy and polarization dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The obtained band structure and Fermi surface agree well with the band structure calculation of Na2Ti2Sb2O in the non-magnetic state, which indicating that there is no magnetic order in Na2Ti2Sb2O and the electronic correlation is weak. Polarization dependent ARPES results suggest the multi-band and multi-orbital nature of Na2Ti2Sb2O. Photon energy dependent ARPES r…
We study the systematic doping evolution of nodal dispersions by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the continuously doped surface of a high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$. We reveal that the nodal dispersion has three segments separated by two kinks, located at ~10 meV and roughly 70 meV, respectively. The three segments have different band velocities and different doping dependence. In particular, the velocity of the high-energy segment increases monotonically as the doping level decreases and can even surpass the bare band velocity. We propose tha…
