Let P(x,y) be a rational polynomial and k in Q be a generic value. If the curve (P(x,y)=k) is irreducible and admits an infinite number of points whose coordinates are integers then there exist algebraic automorphisms that send P(x,y) to the polynomial x or to x^2-dy^2. Moreover for such curves (and others) we give a sharp bound for the number of integral points (x,y) with x and y bounded.
We explain an algorithm to calculate Arthur's weighted orbital integral in terms of the number of rational points on the fundamental domain of the associated affine Springer fiber. The strategy is to count the number of rational points of the truncated affine Springer fibers in two ways: by the Arthur-Kottwitz reduction and by the Harder-Narasimhan reduction. A comparison of results obtained from these two approaches gives us recurrence relations between the number of rational points on the fundamental domains of the affine Springer fibers and Arthur's weighted orbital integrals. As an example…
We discuss the space of sections and certain bisections on a quadric surfaces bundle $X$ over a smooth curve. The Abel-Jacobi from these spaces to the intermediate Jacobian will be shown to be dominant with rationally connected fibers. As an application, we prove that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for degree four integral Hodge classes of fourfolds fibered by quadric bundles over a smooth curve. This gives an alternative proof of a result of Colliot-Th{é}l{è}ne and Voisin.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface such that linear and numerical equivalence of divisors on $X$ coincide and let $σ\subseteq |D|$ be a linear pencil on $X$ with integral general fibers. A fiber of $σ$ will be called special if either it is not integral or it has non-generic multiplicity at some of the base points (including the infinitely near ones) of the pencil. In this note we provide an algorithm to compute the integral components of the special fibers of $σ$.
We construct a new motivic integration morphism, the so-call bounded integral, that interpolates both the integration morphisms with and without volume forms of Hrushovski and Kazhdan. This is done within the framework of model theory of algebraically closed valued fields of equicharacteristic zero. As an application, we recover and extend some results of Hrushovski and Loeser about the motivic Milnor fiber.
These are the expanded lecture notes from the author's mini-course during the graduate summer school of the Park City Math Institute in 2015. The main topics covered are: geometry of Springer fibers, affine Springer fibers and Hitchin fibers; representations of (affine) Weyl groups arising from these objects; relation between affine Springer fibers and orbital integrals.
We prove that the Vologodsky integral of a mermorphic one-form on a curve over a $p$-adic field with semi-stable reduction restrict to Coleman integrals on the rigid subdomains reducing to the components of the smooth part of the special fiber and that on the connecting annuli the differences of these Coleman integrals form a harmonic cochain on the edges of the dual graph of the special fiber. This determines the Vologodsky integral completely. We analyze the behavior of the integral on the connecting annuli and we explain the results in the case of a Tate elliptic curve.
Given an integral p-adic variety, we observe that if the integral Hodge--de Rham spectral sequence behaves nicely, then the special fiber knows the Hodge numbers of the generic fiber. Applying recent advancements of integral p-adic Hodge theory, we show that such a nice behavior is guaranteed if the p-adic variety can be lifted to an analogue of second Witt vectors and satisfies some bound on dimension and ramification index. This is a (ramified) mixed characteristic analogue of results due to Deligne--Illusie and Fontaine--Messing. Lastly, we discuss an example illustrating the necessity of t…
We construct a concrete example of a 1-parameter family of smooth projective geometrically integral varieties over an open subscheme of P^1_Q such that there is exactly one rational fiber with no rational points. This makes explicit a construction of Poonen.
Given a complex analytic function with a one-dimensional critical locus at the origin, we examine the monodromy action on the integral cohomology of the Milnor fiber. We relate this monodromy to that of a generic hyperplane slice through the origin, and to that of a generic hyperplane slice near the origin. We thereby obtain number-theoretic restrictions on the monodromy and on the cohomology of the original Milnor fiber.
We remark that the study of a fiber-integral of the type F (s) := f =s ($ω$/df) $\land$ ($ω$/df) either in the local case where $ρ$ $\not\equiv$ 1 around 0 is C $\infty$ and compactly supported near the origin which is a singular point of {f = 0} in C n+1 , or in a global setting where f : X $\rightarrow$ D is a proper holomorphic function on a complex manifold X, smooth outside {f = 0} with $ρ$ $\not\equiv$ 1 near {f = 0}, for given holomorphic (n+1)--forms $ω$ and $ω$' , that a better control on the asymptotic expansion of F when s $\rightarrow$ 0, is obtained by using the Bernstein polynomi…
Adapting a powerful method of Swinnerton-Dyer, we give explicit sufficient conditions for the existence of integral points on certain schemes which are fibered into affine conics. This includes, in particular, cases where the scheme is geometrically a smooth log K3 surface. To the knowledge of the author, this is the first family of log K3 surfaces for which such conditions are established.
The main objective of this article is to study the topology of the fibers of a generic rational function of the type $F^p/G^q$ in the projective space of dimension two. We will prove that the action of the monodromy group on a single Lefschetz vanishing cycle $δ$ generates the first homology group of a generic fiber of $F^p/G^q$. In particular, we will prove that for any two Lefschetz vanishing cycles $δ_0$ and $δ_1$ in a regular compact fiber of $F^p/G^q$, there exists a monodromy $h$ such that $h(δ_0)=\pm δ_1$.
The aim of this article is to prove a Thom-Sebastiani theorem for the asymptotics of the fiber-integrals. This means that we describe the asymptotics of the fiber-integrals of the function $f \oplus g : (x,y) \to f(x) + g(y)$ \ on $(\mathbb{C}^p\times \mathbb{C}^q, (0,0))$ in term of the asymptotics of the fiber-integrals of the holomorphic germs $f : (\mathbb{C}^p,0) \to (\mathbb{C},0)$ and $g : (\mathbb{C}^q,0) \to (\mathbb{C},0)$. This reduces to compute the asymptotics of a convolution $Φ_*Ψ$ from the asymptotics of $Φ$ and $Ψ$ modulo smooth terms. To obtain a precise theorem, giving the n…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a number field, fibered over a curve, with geometrically integral fibers. We prove that, supposing the finiteness of $\sha(Jac(C))$, if the fibers over a generalised Hilbertian subset satisfy the Hasse principle (resp. weak approximation), then the Brauer-Manin obstruction coming from the base curve is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle (resp. to weak approximation) for zero-cycles of degree 1 on $X$.
Given a smooth projective 3-fold Y, with $H^{3,0}(Y)=0$, the Abel-Jacobi map induces a morphism from each smooth variety parameterizing 1-cycles in Y to the intermediate Jacobian J(Y). We study in this paper the existence of families of 1-cycles in Y for which this induced morphism is surjective with rationally connected general fiber, and various applications of this property. When Y itself is rationally connected, we relate this property to the existence of an integral homological decomposition of the diagonal. We also study this property for cubic threefolds, completing the work of Iliev-Ma…

This note studies the geometric structure of monotone moment polytopes (the duals of smooth Fano polytopes) using probes. The latter are line segments that enter the polytope at an interior point of a facet and whose direction is integrally transverse to this facet. A point inside the polytope is displaceable by a probe if it lies less than half way along it. Using a construction due to Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono, we show that every rational polytope has a central point that is not displaceable by probes. In the monotone (or more generally, the reflexive) case, this central point is its unique interio…
Using a recent result by S. Papadima and A. Suciu, we show that the equivariant Poincaré-Deligne polynomial of the Milnor fiber of a projective line arrangement having only double and triple points is combinatorially determined.
In this article, we consider an infinite family of normal surface singularities with an integral homology sphere link which is related to the family of space monomial curves with a plane semigroup. These monomial curves appear as the special fibers of equisingular families of curves whose generic fibers are a complex plane branch, and the related surface singularities appear in a proof of the monodromy conjecture for these curves. To investigate whether the link of a normal surface singularity is an integral homology sphere, one can use a characterization that depends on the determinant of the…
For G a semisimple algebraic group, we revisit the description of the components of the affne Springer fiber given by ts, with s a regular semisimple element. We then compute the fixed points of each component of a particular affne Springer fiber for Type A
It is shown that a polynomial map $(P,Q)\in \mathbb{Q}[x,y]^2$ with $P_xQ_y-P_yQ_x \equiv 1$ has an inverse map in $\mathbb{Q}[x,y]^2$ if the fiber $P=0$ contains an infinite subset of $ d^{-1}\mathbb{Z}^2$ for an integer $d$.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected split reductive group over a field of characteristic zero or sufficiently large characteristic, $γ_0\in(\operatorname{Lie}\mathbf{G})((t))$ be any topologically nilpotent regular semisimple element, and $γ=tγ_0$. Using methods from $p$-adic orbital integrals, we show that the number of components of the Iwahori affine Springer fiber over $γ$ modulo $Z_{\mathbf{G}((t))}(γ)$ is equal to the order of the Weyl group.
To each variety $X$ and a nonnegative integer $m$, there is a space $X_m$ over $X$, called the jet scheme of $X$ of order $m$, parametrizing $m$-th jets on $X$. Its fiber over a singular point of $X$ is called a singular fiber. For a surface with a rational double point, Mourtada gave a one-to-one correspondence between the irreducible components of the singular fiber of $X_m$ and the exceptional curves of the minimal resolution of $X$ for $m \gg 0$. In this paper, for a surface $X$ over complex number with a singularity of $A_n$ or $D_4$-type, we study the intersections of irreducible compone…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
In this article we introduce the mixed Hodge structure of the Brieskorn module of a polynomial $f$ in $\C^{n+1}$, where $f$ satisfies a certain regularity condition at infinity (and hence has isolated singularities). We give an algorithm which produces a basis of a localization of the Brieskorn module which is compatible with its mixed Hodge structure. As an application we show that the notion of a Hodge cycle in regular fibers of $f$ is given in terms of the vanishing of integrals of certain polynomial $n$-forms in $\C^{n+1}$ over topological $n$-cycles on the fibers of $f$. Since the $n$-th …
Let $R$ be an integral domain over a field $k$, and $G$ a subgroup of the automorphism group of the polynomial ring $R[x_1,..., x_n]$ over $R$. In this paper, we discuss when $G$ is diagonalizable under the assumption that $G$ is diagonalizable over the field of fractions of $R$. We are particularly interested in the case where $G$ is a finite abelian group. Kraft-Russell (2014) implies that every finite abelian subgroup of ${\rm Aut}_R(R[x_1,x_2])$ is diagonalizable if $R$ is an affine PID over $k={\bf C}$. One of the main results of this paper says that the same holds for a PID $R$ over any …
The middle homology of the Milnor fiber of a quasihomogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity is a ${\mathbb Z}$-lattice and comes equipped with an automorphism of finite order, the integral monodromy. Orlik (1972) made a precise conjecture, which would determine this monodromy in terms of the weights of the polynomial. Here we prove this conjecture for the cycle type singularities. A paper of Cooper (1982) with the same aim contained two mistakes. Still it is very useful. We build on it and correct the mistakes. We give additional algebraic and combinatorial results.
