The U(1)' symmetry associated with a possible heavy Z' would have profound implications for particle physics and cosmology. The motivations for such particles in various extensions of the standard model, possible ranges for their masses and couplings, and classes of anomaly-free models are discussed. Present limits from electroweak and collider experiments are briefly surveyed, as are prospects for discovery and diagnostic study at future colliders. Implications of a Z' are discussed, including an extended Higgs sector, extended neutralino sector, and solution to the mu problem in supersymmetry; exotic fermions needed for anomaly cancellation; possible flavor changing neutral current effects; neutrino mass; possible Z' mediation of supersymmetry breaking; and cosmological implications for cold dark matter and electroweak baryogenesis.
Higgs boson properties could be studied with a high accuracy at a muon collider via the s-channel resonant production. We consider the situation where the center-of-mass energy of the muon collider is off the resonance above the Higgs mass. We discuss the discovery potential for a generic heavy Higgs boson ($H$) and compare different production mechanisms, including the "radiative return" ($γH$), $Z$-boson associated production ($ZH$) and heavy Higgs pair production ($HA$). These production mechanisms do not sensitively rely on a priori knowledge of the heavy Higgs boson mass. We include vario…
The propagator of a gauge boson, like the massless photon or the massive vector bosons $W^\pm$ and $Z$ of the electroweak theory, can be derived in two different ways, namely via Green's functions (semi-classical approach) or via the vacuum expectation value of the time-ordered product of the field operators (field theoretical approach). Comparing the semi-classical with the field theoretical approach, the central tensorial object can be defined as the gauge boson projector, directly related to the completeness relation for the complete set of polarisation four-vectors. In this paper we explai…
In models with extended Higgs sector and additional matter fields, the decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons can be dominated by cascade decays through the new fermions rendering present search strategies ineffective. We investigate new decay topologies of heavy neutral Higgses in two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons. We also discuss constraints from existing searches and discovery prospects. Among the most interesting signatures are monojet, mono Z, mono Higgs, and Z and Higgs bosons produced with a pair of charged leptons.
We discuss the specificity of the interactions of the electroweak gauge boson excitations in models with warped extra dimensions. In particular, we show that the couplings of the gauge boson excitations $W^{\prime}$, $Z^{\prime}$, and $γ^\prime$ to the SM gauge bosons treated as the zero modes of the 5D gauge fields are either exactly equal to zero or very much suppressed. In the former case, the three-particle and four-particle interaction Lagrangians of the SM gauge bosons and their lowest excitations are found explicitly. Meanwhile, the couplings of $W^{\prime}$, $Z^{\prime}$, and $γ^\prime…
We discuss first-order electroweak phase transition in models with extended Higgs sectors for the case with relatively heavy additional scalar bosons. We first show that, by the combination of the sphaleron decoupling condition, perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability, mass upper bounds on additional scalar bosons can be obtained at the TeV scale even at the alignment limit where the lightest Higgs boson behaves exactly like the SM Higgs boson at tree level. We then discuss phenomenological impacts of the case with the additional scalar bosons with the mass near 1 TeV. Even when they are t…
A simple, anomaly-free chiral gauge theory can be perturbatively quantised and renormalised in such a way as to generate fermion and gauge boson masses. This development exploits certain freedoms inherent in choosing the unperturbed Lagrangian and in the renormalisation procedure. Apart from its intrinsic interest, such a mechanism might be employed in electroweak gauge theory to generate fermion and gauge boson masses without a Higgs sector.
We study the discovery prospects of a heavy neutral scalar arising from a $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model (SM) during the Large Hadron Collider's high luminosity runs (HL-LHC). This heavy neutral scalar mixes with the SM Higgs boson through a Higgs portal and interacts with the SM particles with an interaction strength proportional to the sine of the mixing angle. The mixing between the two Higgs bosons is constrained by direct and indirect measurements. We choose an experimentally viable mixing angle and explore in detail the $ZZ$ and $WW$ decay modes of the heavy Higgs boson. Fo…
We explore the sensitivity of W and Z boson production in hadronic collisions to uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x arising from uncertainties in nuclear corrections when using deuterium data in global QCD fits. The W and Z differential cross sections show increasing influence of nuclear corrections at high boson rapidities, particularly for the d quark, which is diluted somewhat in the decay lepton rapidity distributions. The effects of PDF uncertainties on heavy W' and Z' bosons beyond the Standard Model become progressively more important for larger boson masse…
In the dynamical gauge-Higgs unification, it is shown that the mass of the Higgs boson (4D scalar field) in U(1) gauge theory in $M^4 \times T^n$ ($n=1,2,3,...$) is finite to all order in perturbation theory as a consequence of the large gauge invariance. It is conjectured that the Higgs boson mass is finite in non-Abelian gauge theory in $M^4 \times S^1$, $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ and the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime to all order in the rearranged perturbation theory where the large gauge invariance is maintained.
We explore the phenomenology of an extra U(1) gauge boson which primarily couples to standard model gauge bosons. We classify all possible parity-odd couplings up to dimension 6 operators. We then study the prospects for the detection of such a boson at the LHC and show that the electroweak decay channels lead to very clean signals, allowing us to probe couplings well into the TeV scale.
A heavy Standard Model Higgs boson is not only disfavored by electroweak precision observables but is also excluded by direct searches at the 7 TeV LHC for a wide range of masses. Here, we examine scenarios where a heavy Higgs boson can be made consistent with both the indirect constraints and the direct null searches by adding only one new particle beyond the Standard Model. This new particle should be a weak multiplet in order to have additional contributions to the oblique parameters. If it is a color singlet, we find that a heavy Higgs with an intermediate mass of 200 - 300 GeV can decay i…
We clarify the role of vector boson fusion (VBF) in the production of heavy vector triplets at the LHC and the HL-LHC. We point out that the presence of VBF production leads to an unavoidable rate of Drell-Yan (DY) production and highlight the subtle interplay between the falling parton luminosities and the increasing importance of VBF production as the heavy vector mass increases. We discuss current LHC searches and HL-LHC projections in di-boson and di-lepton final states and demonstrate that VBF production outperforms DY production for resonance masses above 1 TeV in certain regions of the …
We study the possibilities on the search of the light and weakly interacting gauge boson in the gauged $L_μ- L_τ$ model. Introducing the kinetic mixing at the tree-level, the allowed parameter regions for the gauge coupling and kinetic mixing parameter are presented. Then, we analyze one photon plus missing event within the allowed region and show that search for the light gauge boson will be possible at Belle-II experiment. We also analyze neutrino trident production process in neutrino beam experiments.
We study the production of a heavy charged Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in $gb\to H^{-} t$ within a Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). The chiral structure of the $H^{-} t \bar{b}$ coupling can trigger a particular spin state of the top quark produced in the decay of a charged Higgs boson and, therefore, is sensitive to the underlying mechanism of the Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB). Taking two benchmark models (2HDM type-I and 2HDM type-Y) as an example, we show that inclusive rates, differential distributions as well as forward-backward asymmetries of the top quark's dec…
Diboson production at the LHC is a process of great importance both in the context of tests of the SM and for direct searches for new physics. In this paper we present a phenomenological study of WW, WZ, and ZZ production considering event selections of interest for the anomalous triple-gauge-boson-coupling searches at the LHC: we provide theoretical predictions within the Standard Model at NLO QCD and NLO EW accuracy and study the effect of the anomalous triple-gauge-boson interactions at NLO QCD. For WW and ZZ production, the contribution of the gluon-initiated loop-induced processes is incl…
New physics coupled to the Higgs boson may hide it in the standard decay channels to be investigated at LHC. We consider the models where new invisible dominant decay modes of the Higgs boson are responsible for this hiding. We propose to study at LHC the weak boson production associated with heavy quarks: our analysis revealed that boson pair invariant mass distribution is sensitive to both mass and width of the invisible Higgs boson, if it is not too far from the weak boson pair threshold. We present tree-level results for the most relevant cases of top quarks and of bottom quarks in Standar…
The hints from the LHC for the existence of a $W'$ boson of mass around 1.9 TeV point towards a certain $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge theory with an extended Higgs sector. We show that the decays of the $W'$ boson into heavy Higgs bosons have sizable branching fractions. Interpreting the ATLAS excess events in the search for same-sign lepton pairs plus $b$ jets as arising from $W'$ cascade decays, we estimate that the masses of the heavy Higgs bosons are in the 400--700 GeV range.
We integrate out the Higgs boson in the electroweak standard model at one loop, assuming that it is very heavy. We construct a low-energy effective Lagrangian, which parametrizes the one-loop effects of the heavy Higgs boson at O(M_H^0). Instead of applying conventional diagrammatical techniques, we integrate out the Higgs boson directly in the path integral.
Theoretical predictions for the decay width of Standard Model Higgs boson into bottom quarks and tau-leptons, in the case when M_H< 2M_W, are briefly reviewed. The effects of higher order perturbative QCD (up to alpha_s^4-level) and QED corrections are considered. The uncertainties of the decay width of Higgs boson into bb and tau+tau- are discussed.
A gauge field model, which simultaneously has strict local gauge symmetry and massive gauge bosons, is discussed in this paper. The model has SU(N) gauge symmetry. In the limit $α\longrightarrow 0$, the gauge field model discussed in this paper will return to Yang-Mills gauge field model. The important meaning of this model is that, without Higgs mechanism, gauge bosons can also obtain masses. This theory can also explain some other unknown phenomenum.
We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study anomalous trilinear vector-boson interactions W^+ W^- γand W^+ W^- Z through the single production of electroweak gauge bosons via the weak boson fusion processes q q -> q q W (-> \ell^\pm ν) and q q -> q q Z(-> \ell^+ \ell^-) with \ell = e or μ. After a careful study of the standard model backgrounds, we show that the single production of electroweak bosons at the LHC can provide stringent tests on deviations of these vertices from the standard model prediction. In particular, we show that single gauge boson production …
There has been rapidly growing interest in the past decade in a new gauge boson which is considerably lighter than the standard model Z boson. A well-known example of this kind is the so-called dark photon, and it is actively searched for in various experiments nowadays. It would be puzzling to have a new gauge boson which is neither massless nor electroweak scale, but possesses a rather small yet nonzero mass. We present a mechanism that can provide a light gauge boson as a result of a mass matrix diagonalization.
We discuss upper limits on the electric dipole moments (EDM) of the tau-lepton, heavy quarks, and W-boson, which follow from the precision measurements of the electron and neutron EDM.
If no light Higgs boson exist, the interaction among the gauge bosons becomes strong at high energies (~1TeV). The effects of strong electroweak symmetry breaking (SEWSB) could manifest themselves as anomalous couplings before they give rise to new physical states, thus measurement of all couplings and their possible deviation from Standard Model (SM) values could give valuable information for understanding the true nature of symmetry breaking sector. Here we present a detailed study of the measurement of quartic gauge couplings in weak boson scattering processes and a possibility for same mea…
We study the production of massive gauge bosons during inflation from the axion-type coupling to the inflaton and the corresponding oscillatory features in the primordial non-Gaussianity. In a window in which both the gauge boson mass and the chemical potential are large, the signal is potentially reachable by near-future large scale structure probes. This scenario covers a new region in oscillation frequency which is not populated by previously known cosmological collider models. We also demonstrate how to properly include the exponential factor and discuss the subtleties in obtaining power d…
The gauge dependence of the Higgs-boson mass and width in the on-shell scheme of renormalization is studied in the heavy-Higgs-boson approximation. The corresponding expansions in the pole scheme are analyzed adopting three frequently employed parametrizations. The convergence properties and other theoretical features of the on-shell and pole expansions, as well as their relative merits, are discussed.
It is proposed to replace the Higgs boson of the standard model by a Lorentz- and gauge-invariant combination of SU(2) gauge bosons. A pair of Higgs bosons is identified with pairs of gauge bosons by setting their mass Lagrangians equal to each other. That immediately determines the mass of the composite Higgs boson. It becomes simply half of the vacuum expectation value of the standard Higgs boson, which matches the observed mass with tree-level accuracy (2%). The two parameters of the standard Higgs potential are replaced by five one-loop self-interactions of the SU(2) gauge bosons, derived …
We present a next-to-leading-order calculation of the production of a Z boson with two jets, one or more of which contains a heavy quark (Q=c,b). We show that the cross section with only one heavy-quark jet is larger than that with two heavy-quark jets at both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC. These processes are the dominant irreducible backgrounds to a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson, followed by h->bb. Our calculation makes use of a heavy-quark distribution function, which resums collinear logarithms and makes the next-to-leading-order calculation tractable.
We discuss the modified top quark condensation model proposed in \cite{VZ2015}. This construction was inspired by the top - seesaw scenario, in which the extra heavy fermion $χ$ is added that may be paired with the top quark. Besides, this model incorporates the ideas of the Little Higgs scenario, in which the $125$ GeV scalar particle appears as a Pseudo - Goldstone boson. This model admits (in addition to the $125$ GeV scalar boson $H$) the heavier scalar excitation $H^\prime$. We consider the region of parameters, where its mass is $M_{H^\prime} \sim 1$ TeV, the width of $H^\prime$ is $Γ_{H…
It is shown how the S-matrix pinch technique may be extended to the cases of external scalar and gauge boson fields. Using this extension, the universality of the pinch technique gauge-independent one-loop gauge boson self-energy in a general unbroken SU($N$) gauge theory is demonstrated explicitly.
We summarize the results of the New Gauge Boson Subgroup on the physics of extended gauge sectors at future colliders as presented at the 1996 Snowmass workshop. We discuss the direct and indirect search reaches for new gauge bosons at both hadron and lepton colliders as well as the ability of such machines to extract detailed information on the couplings of these particles to the fermions and gauge bosons of the Standard Model. [To appear in the Proceedings of the 1996 DPF/DPB Summer Study on New Directions for High Energy Physics-Snowmass96, Snowmass, CO, 25 June-12 July, 1996.]
It is investigated whether observations of family gauge bosons by terrestrial experiments are possible or not. We propose an extended version of Sumino's family gauge boson model based on U(3) family symmetry. Then, we can expect the lowest family gauge boson $A_1^1$ with $M \sim 4.3$ TeV.
We consider a generic framework where the Standard Model (SM) coexists with a hidden sector endowed with some additional gauge symmetry. When this symmetry is broken by a scalar field charged under the hidden gauge group, the corresponding scalar boson generally mixes with the SM Higgs boson. In addition, massive hidden gauge bosons emerge and via the mixing, the observed Higgs-like mass eigenstate is the only known particle that couples to these hidden gauge bosons directly. We study the LHC monojet signatures of this scenario and the corresponding constraints on the gauge coupling of the hid…
The study of gauge bosons is interesting in two respects. The properties of gauge bosons are modified by higher order effects that are sensitive to mass scales not directly accessible to experiment. On the other hand interactions amongst gauge bosons are sensitive to the symmetry structure of the theory where especially the interactions involving longitudinally polarised bosons teach us about the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. This article explains how far a linear collider can increase our knowledge about the properties of and the interactions amongst gauge bosons.
We derive analytic formulas for the radiatively corrected mass of the scalar Higgs boson in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). Since the scalar-top-quark mass in our analysis include terms proportional to the gauge couplings in the 1-loop effective potential, the radiatively corrected mass of the scalar Higgs boson partially contains the gauge boson contributions. At the 1-loop level, the upper bound on the lighter scalar Higgs boson mass can be increased about 20 GeV in favor of the partial contributions of the gauge bosons. Thus the improved absolute upper bou…
We study the phenomenology of heavy gauge bosons at the LHC in a nonuniversal gauge interaction model with the separate electroweak SU(2) gauge group for the third generation. Considered are the Drell-Yan processes into the final states of dilepton, dijet, $τ^- τ^+$, and $t \bar{t}$ for $Z'$ boson and those of lepton-neutrino for $W'$ boson. We find that the present LHC data provides lower bounds on the masses of the heavy gauge bosons, $m_{Z'},~m_{W'} > 2$ TeV, more stringent than indirect bounds, when $\sin^2 ϕ> 0.15$ for the mixing angle of two SU(2) gauge groups. We also note that the study…
We examine trilinear gauge boson couplings (TGCs) in the context of the $SU(3)_W\otimes U(1)'$ gauge-Higgs unification scenario. The TGCs play important roles in the probes of the physics beyond the standard model, since they are highly restricted by the experiments. We discuss mass spectrum of the neutral gauge boson with brane-localized mass terms carefully and find that the TGCs and $ρ$ parameter may deviate from standard model predictions. Finally we put a constraint from these observables and discuss the possible parameter space.
Associated production of a Higgs boson with a heavy, i.e. top or bottom, quark-anti-quark pair provide observation channels for Higgs bosons at the LHC which can be used to measure the respective Yukawa couplings. For the light supersymmetric Higgs boson we present SUSY-QCD corrections at the one-loop level, which constitute a significant contribution to the cross section.
If large-angle multigluon radiation contributes significantly to parton showers associated with heavy boson production at the LHC, appropriate parton branching methods are required for realistic Monte Carlo simulations of final states. We report on a study illustrating such effects in the case of central scalar-boson production. We comment on the possible impact of such studies on the modeling of multi-parton interactions.
A new mechanism giving the massive gauge bosons in Yang-Mills theory is proposed in this letter. The masses of intermediate vector bosons can be automatically given without introducing Higgs scalar boson. Furthermore the relation between the masses of bosons and the fermion mass matrix is obtained. It is discussed that the theory should be renormalizable.
The radiative decay width of a heavy Higgs boson $H \rightarrow W^+W^-γ$ for a {\it hard} photon is calculated in the Standard Model and its extension with anomalous $γWW$ couplings. Its dependence on the Higgs mass, the two unknown anomalous couplings, and the photon energy cutoff are studied in detail. We show that this radiative decay of a heavy Higgs is not very sensitive to a wide range of the anomalous couplings compared to the Standard Model result.
If the electroweak symmetry breaking sector contains colored particles weighing a few hundred GeV, then they will be copiously produced at a hadron supercollider. Colored technipions can rescatter into pairs of gauge bosons. As proposed by Bagger, Dawson, and Valencia, this leads to gauge boson pair rates far larger than in the standard model. In this note we reconsider this mechanism, and illustrate it in a model in which the rates can be reliably calculated. The observation of both an enhanced rate of gauge-boson-pair events and colored particles would be a signal that the colored particles …
The next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a $W$-boson in association with a jet containing a heavy quark are presented. The calculation is fully differential in the final state particle momenta and includes the mass of the heavy quark. We study for the case of the Tevatron the sensitivity of the cross section to the strange quark distribution function, the dependence of the cross section on the heavy quark mass, the transverse momentum distribution of the jet containing the heavy quark, and the momentum distribution of the heavy quark in the jet.
We study an upper bound on masses of additional scalar bosons from the electroweak precision data and theoretical constraints such as perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability in the two Higgs doublet model taking account of recent Higgs boson search results. If the mass of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson is rather heavy and is outside the allowed region by the electroweak precision data, such a discrepancy should be compensated by contributions from the additional scalar bosons. We show the upper bound on masses of the additional scalar bosons to be about 2 $(1)$ TeV for the mass of the…
We study the impact of heavy-quark masses in Higgs boson production through gluon fusion at the LHC. We extend previous computations of the fully differential cross section and of the transverse momentum spectrum of the Higgs boson by taking into account the finite top- and bottom-quark masses up to O(alpha_S^3). We also discuss the issues arising when the heavy-quark mass is much smaller than the Higgs mass. Our results are implemented in updated versions of the HNNLO and HRes numerical programs.
The values of color and anticolor charges are proposed. The structure of gluons is predicted relative to their color and anticolor charges. It is shown that the gauge bosons of lower order theories can be used as it is for higher order theories. Various mass relations between the gauge bosons are also given.
We consider the scattering amplitudes of the form V_1 V_2 -> V_3 V_4, where V_i=γ, Z, W or g(=gluon) are the Standard Model gauge bosons, due to graviton exchange in Kaluza-Klein theories with large extra dimensions. This leads to a number of experimentally viable signatures at high energy leptonic and hadronic colliders. We discuss the observability or future limits on the scale of the gravitational interactions (m_D), that may be obtained at an e+e- Next Linear Collider (NLC) and at the LHC, by studying some of these type of gauge boson scattering processes. We find that the attainable limit…
QCD corrections to inclusive Higgs boson production at the LHC are evaluated at next-to-next-to leading order. By performing asymptotic expansion of the cross section near the limit of infinitely heavy top quark we obtained a few first top mass-suppressed terms. The corrections to the hadronic cross sections are found to be small compared to the scale uncertainty, thus justifying the use of heavy top quark approximation in many published results.
Extra neutral gauge bosons and Higgs bosons in an effective low-energy $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_I \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_{Y^{\prime}}$ model, which is a subgroup of $E_6$, are studied. $SU(2)_I$ is a subgroup of $SU(3)_R$ and commutes with the electric charge operator, so the three corresponding gauge bosons are neutral. Electroweak precision experiments are used to put constraints on masses of the extra neutral gauge bosons and on the mixings between them and the ordinary Z boson, including constraints arising from a proposed measurment of the weak charge of the proton at Jefferson Lab. Bound…
Possible realistic scenarios are investigated in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) Higgs sector extended by dimension-six effective operators. The CP-odd Higgs boson with low mass around 30--90 GeV could be consistently introduced in the regime of large threshold corrections to the effective MSSM two-doublet Higgs potential.
The hadronic tau decay channel offers by far the best signature for heavy charged Higgs boson search at the LHC in the large $\tanβ$ region. By exploiting the distinct polarization of the tau and its large transverse mass, along with the accompanying missing--$p_T$, one can probe for a charged Higgs boson up to a mass of about 600 GeV in an essentially background-free environment. The transverse mass distribution of the tau jet also provides a fairly unambiguous estimate of the charged Higgs boson mass.
Inspired by the Goldstone equivalence gauge, we study the thermal corrections to an originally massive vector boson by checking the poles and branch cuts. We find that part of the Goldstone boson is spewed out from the longitudinal polarization, becoming a branch cut which can be approximated by the "quasi-poles" in the thermal environment. In this case, physical Goldstone boson somehow partly recovers. We also show the Feynmann rules for the "external legs" of these vector boson as well as the recovered Goldstone boson, expecting to simplify the vector boson participated process calculations …
