We estimate the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum of the Laplacian on locally symmetric spaces in terms of the critical exponents of appropriate Poincaré series. Our main result is the higher rank analog of a characterization due to Elstrodt, Patterson, Sullivan and Corlette in rank one. It improves upon previous results obtained by Leuzinger and Weber in higher rank.
We give a mathematically rigorous construction of a magnetic Schrödinger operator corresponding to a field with flux through finitely many holes of the Sierpinski Gasket. The operator is shown to have discrete spectrum accumulating at $\infty$, and it is shown that the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues is the same as that for the Laplacian. Most eigenfunctions may be computed using gauge transformations corresponding to the magnetic field and the remainder of the spectrum may be approximated to arbitrary precision by using a sequence of approximations by magnetic operators on finite graph…
We derive closed formula for the heat kernel $K_\mathbb{H}$ associated to Maass-Laplacian operator $D_k$ for any real $k$ and prove that heat kernel $K_\mathbb{H}$ is strictly monotone decreasing function. We also derive some important asymptotic formulae for the heat kernel $K_\mathbb{H}$.
We discuss Laplacians on graphs in a framework of regular Dirichlet forms. We focus on phenomena related to unboundedness of the Laplacians. This includes (failure of) essential selfadjointness, absence of essential spectrum and stochastic incompleteness.
We show that any closed $n$-dimensional manifold $(M,g)$ can be embedded by a map constructed using the heat kernels of the connection Laplacian as well as a maps constructed using truncated heat kernel at a certain time $t$ from a $δ$-net $\{q_i\}_{i=1}^{N_0}$ via a rescaling trick. Both the time $t$ and $N_0$ are bounded in terms of the dimension, bounds on the Ricci curvature and its derivative, the injectivity radius, and the volume. Moreover, both maps can be made arbitrarily close to an isometry.
Given a class of closed Riemannian manifolds with prescribed geometric conditions, we introduce an embedding of the manifolds into $\ell^2$ based on the heat kernel of the Connection Laplacian associated with the Levi-Civita connection on the tangent bundle. As a result, we can construct a distance in this class which leads to a pre-compactness theorem on the class under consideration.
We study the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian on a graph with an orthogonal group or unitary group signature. We establish higher order Buser type inequalities, i.e., we provide upper bounds for eigenvalues in terms of Cheeger constants in the case of nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this process, we discuss the concepts of Cheeger type constants and a discrete Ricci curvature for connection Laplacians and study their properties systematically. The Cheeger constants are defined as mixtures of the expansion rate of the underlying graph and the frustration index of the signature. The discr…
Spectrum of the Laplacian on spherical domains is analyzed from the point of view of the heat equation on the cone. The series solution to the heat equation on the cone is known to lead to a study of the Laplacian eigenvalue problem on domains on the sphere in higher dimensions. It is found that the solution leads naturally to a spectral function, a `generating function' for the eigenvalues and multiplicities of the Laplacian, expressible in closed form for certain domains on the sphere. Analytical properties of the spectral function suggest a simple scaling procedure for estimating the eigenv…
We consider the Hodge Laplacian on manifolds with incomplete edge singularities, with infinite dimensional von Neumann spaces and intricate elliptic boundary value theory. We single out a class of its algebraic self-adjoint extensions. Our microlocal heat kernel construction for algebraic boundary conditions is guided by the method of signaling solutions by Mooers, though crucial arguments in the conical case obviously do not carry over to the setup of edges. We then establish the heat kernel asymptotics for the algebraic extensions of the Hodge operator on edges, and elaborate on the exotic p…
The main goal of this work is to study the sub-Laplacian of the unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the quaternionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of the conformal sub-Laplacian and small-time asymptotics. As a byproduct of our study we also obtain several results related to the sub-Laplacian of a projected Hopf fibration.
In this article, we derive bounds for values of the global geometry of locally tessellating planar graphs, namely, the Cheeger constant and exponential growth, in terms of combinatorial curvatures. We also discuss spectral implications for the Laplacians.
We consider classes of simply connected planar domains which are isophasal, ie, have the same scattering phase $s(ł)$ for all $ł> 0$. This is a scattering-theoretic analogue of isospectral domains. Using the heat invariants and the determinant of the Laplacian, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak showed that each isospectral class is sequentially compact in a natural $C$-infinity topology. In this paper, we show sequential compactness of each isophasal class of domains. To do this we define the determinant of the exterior Laplacian and use it together with the heat invariants (the heat invariants and …
Aperiodic substitution tilings provide popular models for quasicrystals, materials exhibiting aperiodic order. We study the graph Laplacian associated with four tilings from the mutual local derivability class of the Penrose tiling, as well as the Ammann--Beenker tiling. In each case we exhibit locally-supported eigenfunctions, which necessarily cause jump discontinuities in the integrated density of states for these models. By bounding the multiplicities of these locally-supported modes, in several cases we provide concrete lower bounds on this jump. These results suggest a host of questions …
For any bounded regular domain $Ω$ of a real analytic Riemannian manifold $M$, we denote by $λ_{k}(Ω)$ the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian of $Ω$. In this paper, we consider $λ_k$ and as a functional upon the set of domains of fixed volume in $M$. We introduce and investigate a natural notion of critical domain for this functional. In particular, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a domain to be critical, locally minimizing or locally maximizing for $λ_k$. These results rely on Hadamard type variational formulae that we establish in this general setting.
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
For an elliptic selfadjoint operator $P =-[u^{μν}\partial_μ\partial_ν+v^ν\partial_ν+w]$ acting on a fiber bundle over a Riemannian manifold, where $u,v^μ,w$ are $N\times N$-matrices, we develop a method to compute the heat-trace coefficients $a_r$ which allows to get them by a pure computational machinery. It is exemplified in dimension 4 by the value of $a_1$ written both in terms of $u,v^μ,w$ or diffeomorphic and gauge invariants. We also answer to the question: when is it possible to get explicit formulae for $a_r$?
We study the heat kernel asymptotics for the Laplace type differential operators on vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds. In particular this includes the case of the Laplacians acting on differential p-forms. We extend our results obtained earlier for the scalar Laplacian and present closed formulas for all heat invariants associated with these operators. As another application, we present new explicit formulas for the matrix Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy.
This paper studies the heat content} for Schrödinger operators of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{α/2}$, $0<α\leq 2$ in $R^d$, $d\geq 1$. Employing probabilistic and analytic techniques, a small time asymptotic expansion formula is given and the "heat content invariants" are identified. These results are new even in the case of the Laplacian, $α=2$.
We consider the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel of a generalized Laplacian for $t\to 0^+$ and characterize the coefficients $a_k$ of this expansion by a natural intertwining property. In particular we will give a closed formula for the infinite order jet of these coefficients on the diagonal in terms of the local expressions of the powers of the given generalized Laplacian in normal coordinates.
In this paper we study the Riesz transform on complete and connected Riemannian manifolds $M$ with a certain spectral gap in the $L^2$ spectrum of the Laplacian. We show that on such manifolds the Riesz transform is $L^p$ bounded for all $p \in (1,\infty)$. This generalizes a result by Mandouvalos and Marias and extends a result by Auscher, Coulhon, Duong, and Hofmann to the case where zero is an isolated point of the $L^2$ spectrum of the Laplacian.
Polterovich proved a remarkable closed formula for heat kernel coefficients of the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds involving powers of Laplacians acting on the distance function. In the case of Kähler manifolds, we prove a combinatorial formula for powers of the complex Laplacian and use it to derive an explicit graph theoretic formula for the numerics in heat coefficients as a linear combination of metric jets based on Polterovich's formula.
We show that the deficiency indices of the minimal Gaffney Laplacian on an infinite locally finite metric graph are equal to the number of finite volume graph ends. Moreover, we provide criteria, formulated in terms of finite volume graph ends, for the Gaffney Laplacian to be closed.
We study the behavior of the heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian on a contact manifold endowed with a family of Riemannian metrics that blow-up the directions transverse to the contact distribution. We apply this to analyze the behavior of global spectral invariants such as the eta-invariant and the determinant of the Laplacian. In particular we prove that contact versions of the relative eta-invariant and the relative analytic torsion are equal to their Riemannian analogues and hence topological.
We consider a non self-adjoint Laplacian on a directed graph with non symmetric weights on edges. We give a criterion for the m-accretiveness and the m-sectoriality of this Laplacian. Our results are based on a comparison of this operator with its symmetric part for which we can apply dierent results concerning essential self-adjointness of a symmetric Laplace operator on an innite graph. This gives results on the heat operator related to our non-symmetric Laplacian.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of oriented faces especially triangles in a connected oriented locally finite graph. This framework then permits to define the Laplace operator on this structure of the 2-simplicial complex. We develop the notion of $χ$-completeness for the graphs, based on the cutoff functions. Moreover, we study essential self-adjointness of the discrete Laplacian from the $χ$-completeness geometric hypothesis.
The discrete spectrum of the Laplacian has been extensively studied on reductive symmetric spaces and on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces. Here we examine it for the first time in the general setting of non-Riemannian, reductive, locally symmetric spaces. For any non-Riemannian, reductive symmetric space X on which the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian is nonempty, and for any discrete group of isometries Gamma whose action on X is sufficiently proper, we construct L^2-eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on X_{Gamma}:=Gamma\X for an infinite set of eigenvalues. These eigenfunctions are obtaine…
For $d \in \N$ and $Ω\ne \emptyset$ an open set in $\R^d$, we consider the eigenfunctions $Φ$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian $-Δ_Ω$ of $Ω$. If $Φ$ is associated with an eigenvalue below the essential spectrum of $-Δ_Ω$ we provide estimates for the $L_1$-norm of $Φ$ in terms of its $L_2$-norm and spectral data. These $L_1$-estimates are then used in the comparison of the heat content of $Ω$ at time $t>0$ and the heat trace at times $t' > 0$, where a two-sided estimate is established. We furthermore show that all eigenfunctions of $-Δ_Ω$ which are associated with a discrete eigenvalue of $H_Ω$, belo…
We consider the heat kernel (and the zeta function) associated with Laplace type operators acting on a general irreducible rank 1 locally symmetric space X. The set of Minakshisundaram- Pleijel coefficients {A_k(X)}_{k=0}^{\infty} in the short-time asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel is calculated explicitly.
We show that a twist of a three-dimensional tube of uniform cross-section yields an improved decay rate for the heat semigroup associated with the Dirichlet Laplacian in the tube. The proof employs Hardy inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in twisted tubes and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation.
We study the existence and uniqueness of the heat kernel on infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a uniqueness criterion, shown to be optimal, is given in terms of the maximal valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. A sufficient condition for non-uniqueness is also presented. Furthermore, we give a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum of the discrete Laplacian and use this bound to give a condition ensuring that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is empty.
In this paper we first derive several results concerning the $L^p$ spectrum of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces whose $\Q$-rank equals one. In particular, we show that there is an open subset of $\C$ consisting of eigenvalues of the $L^p$ Laplacian if $p <2$ and that corresponding eigenfunctions are given by certain Eisenstein series. On the other hand, if $p>2$ there is at most a discrete set of real eigenvalues of the $L^p$ Laplacian. These results are used in the second part of this paper in order to show that the dynamics of the $L^p$ heat semigroups for $p<2$ is very different from the…
In this article, we first introduce the concepts of vector fields and their divergence, and we recall the concepts of the gradient, Laplacian operator, Cheeger constants, eigenvalues, and heat kernels on a locally finite graph $V$. We give a projective characteristic of the eigenvalues. We also give an extension of Barta Theorem. Then we introduce the mini-max value of a function on a locally finite and locally connected graph. We show that for a coercive function on on a locally finite and locally connected graph, there is a mini-max value of the function provided it has two strict local mini…
The main objective of the present work is to study the negative spectrum of (differential) Laplace operators on metric graphs as well as their resolvents and associated heat semigroups. We prove an upper bound on the number of negative eigenvalues and a lower bound on the spectrum of Laplace operators. Also we provide a sufficient condition for the associated heat semigroup to be positivity preserving.
We study spectral properties of sub-Riemannian Laplacians, which are hypoelliptic operators. The main objective is to obtain quantum ergodicity results, what we have achieved in the 3D contact case. In the general case we study the small-time asymptotics of sub-Riemannian heat kernels. We prove that they are given by the nilpotentized heat kernel. In the equiregular case, we infer the local and microlocal Weyl law, putting in light the Weyl measure in sR geometry. This measure coincides with the Popp measure in low dimension but differs from it in general. We prove that spectral concentration …
Cheeger's inequality states that a tightly connected subset can be extracted from a graph $G$ using an eigenvector of the normalized Laplacian associated with $G$. More specifically, we can compute a subset with conductance $O(\sqrt{ϕ_G})$, where $ϕ_G$ is the minimum conductance of a set in $G$. It has recently been shown that Cheeger's inequality can be extended to hypergraphs. However, as the normalized Laplacian of a hypergraph is no longer a matrix, we can only approximate to its eigenvectors; this causes a loss in the conductance of the obtained subset. To address this problem, we here co…
Manifolds with fibered cusps are a class of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds including all locally symmetric spaces of rank one. We study the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps. We obtain precise asymptotics for the resolvent, the heat kernel, and the determinant of the Laplacian. Using these asymptotics we obtain a topological description of the analytic torsion on a manifold with fibered cusps in terms of the R-torsion of the underlying manifold with boundary.
Let $(M^m,g)$ be a m-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold which satisfies the n-Sobolev inequality and on which the volume growth is comparable to the one of $\R^n$ for big balls; if the Hodge Laplacian on 1-forms is strongly positive and the Ricci tensor is in $L^{\frac{n}{2}\pm ε}$ for an $ε>0$, then we prove a Gaussian estimate on the heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian on 1-forms. This allows us to prove that, under the same hypotheses, the Riesz transform $dΔ^{-1/2}$ is bounded on $L^p$ for all $1
We show that the polynomial decay rate of the heat semigroup of the Dirichlet Laplacian in curved planar wedges equals the sum of the usual dimensional decay rate and a multiple of the reciprocal value of the opening angle. To prove the result, we develop the method of self-similar variables for the associated heat equation and study the asymptotic behaviour of the transformed non-autonomous parabolic problem for large times. We also establish an improved Hardy inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian in non-trivially curved wedges and state a conjecture about an improved decay rate in this case…
