We give a correction to the tunneling probability by taking into account the back reaction effect to the metric of the black hole spacetime. We then show how this gives rise to the modifications in the semiclassical black hole entropy and Hawking temperature. Finally, we reproduce the familiar logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
Recently, Angheben et.al. [hep-th/0503081] have presented a refined method for calculating the (tree-level) black hole temperature by way of the tunneling paradigm. In the current letter, we demonstrate how their formalism can be suitably adapted to accommodate the (higher-order) effects of the gravitational back-reaction.
Hawking radiation is studied for arbitrary scalars, fermions, and spin-1 bosons, using a tunneling approach, to every order in $\hbar$ but ignoring back-reaction effects. It is shown that the additional quantum terms yield no new contribution to the Hawking temperature. Indeed, it is found that the limit of small $\hbar$ in the standard quantum WKB approximation is replaced by the near-horizon limit in the gravitational WKB approach.
Recently, an interesting work, which reformulates the tunneling framework to directly produce the Hawking emission spectrum and entropy spectroscopy in the tunneling picture, has been received a broad attention. However, during the emission process, most related observations have not incorporated the effects of back reaction on the background spacetime, whose derivations are therefore not the desiring results for the real physical process. With this point as a central motivation, in this paper we suitably adapt the \emph{reformulated} tunneling framework so that it can well accommodate the eff…
The tunneling wave function of the universe is calculated exactly for a de Sitter minisuperspace model with a massless conformally coupled scalar field, both by solving the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and by evaluating the Lorentzian path integral. The same wave function is found in both approaches. The back-reaction of quantum field fluctuations on the scale factor amounts to a constant renormalization of the vacuum energy density. This is in contrast to the recent suggestion of Feldbrugge $et$ $al.$ that the back-reaction should diverge when the scale factor gets small, $a \to 0$. Similar result…
There has been much work on explaining Hawking radiation as a quantum tunneling process through horizons. Basically, this intuitive picture requires the calculation of the imaginary part of the action for outgoing particle. And two ways are known for achieving this goal: the null-geodesic method and the Hamilton-Jacobi method. We apply these methods to the charged black holes in 2D dilaton gravity which is originated from the low energy effective theory of type 0A string theory. We derive the correct Hawking temperature of the black holes including the effect of the back reaction of the radiat…
We study the effect of back-reaction on the evaporation of quantum black holes. The method used is based on quantum tunneling formalism as proposed in [4]. We give a more realistic picture by considering the fact that a black hole looses its energy while modes are tunneled outside the event horizon. It is shown how the tunneling quantum field modes affect the geometry and how this change in geometry is arrested in the quantum field. Exploiting this we calculate the modified (nonthermal) radiation spectrum, associating energy fluxes and discuss various issues related with these. The results obt…
We discuss Hawking radiation from a five-dimensional squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole on the basis of the tunneling mechanism. A simple manner, which was recently suggested by Umetsu, is possible to extend the original derivation by Parikh and Wilczek to various black holes. That is, we use the two-dimensional effective metric, which is obtained by the dimensional reduction near the horizon, as the background metric. By using same manner, we derive both the desired result of the Hawking temperature and the effect of the back reaction associated with the radiation in the squashed Kaluza-Klein b…
Hawking radiation as tunneling by Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond semiclassical approximation is analysed. We compute all quantum corrections in the single particle action revealing that these are proportional to the usual semiclassical contribution. We show that a simple choice of the proportionality constants reproduces the one loop back reaction effect in the spacetime, found by conformal field theory methods, which modifies the Hawking temperature of the black hole. Using the law of black hole mechanics we give the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law following from the modified Ha…
In this work we will show how the back-reaction can be treated as a quantum correction. The novel semi-classical approach presented here consists in the introduction of adequate quantum corrections into the r-t sector of the black hole metric. Thus, we will obtain corrected values for the temperature, entropy and emission rate, which at leading order coincide with the results in the tunneling frame. We have also applied this technique to the Little String Theory. Interestingly, we have found similar results for the entropy as using string one-loop calculations.
We reformulate quantum tunneling in a multi-dimensional system where the tunneling sector is non-linearly coupled to oscillators. The WKB wave function is explicitly constructed under the assumption that the system was in the ground state before tunneling. We find that the quantum state after tunneling can be expressed in the language of the conventional in-in formalism. Some implications of the result to cosmology are discussed.
Hawking radiation as a quantum tunneling phenomena from accelerating BTZ black holes is presented in this work. We have calculated the Dirac particle's Hawking radiation from the horizon of the accelerating BTZ black hole. WKB approximation is applied to Dirac equation in the background of three dimensional black holes. This procedure gives us the tunneling probability, which we have used to calculate the Hawking temperature of the background three-dimensional black hole. Our study is consistent with the previous studies in the absence of the acceleration parameter. We have also studied the qu…
Studying two-dimensional evaporating dilatonic black holes, we show that the semiclassical approximation, based on the background field approach, is valid everywhere in regions of weak curvature (including the horizon), as long as one takes into account the effects of back-reaction of the Hawking radiation on the background geometry.
In this paper, by applying the deformed dispersion relation in quantum gravity theory, we study the correction of fermions' tunneling radiation from non-stationary symmetric black holes. Firstly, the motion equation of fermions is modified in the gravitational spacetime. Based on the motion equation, the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation has been obtained by a semiclassical approximation method. Then, the tunneling behavior of fermions at the event horizon of non-stationary symmetric Kerr black hole is investigated. Finally, the results show that in the non-stationary symmetric background, the…
In this article we employ the matching method to analytically investigate the properties of holographic superconductors in the framework of Maxwell electrodynamics taking into account the effects of back reaction on spacetime. The relationship between the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) and the charge density ($ρ$) has been obtained first. The influence of back reaction on Meissner like effect in this holographic superconductor is then studied. The results for the critical temperature indicate that the condensation gets harder to form when we include the effect of back reaction. The expression …
Applying the Hamilton--Jacobi method we investigate the tunneling of photon across the event horizon of a static spherically symmetric black hole. The necessity of the gauge condition on the photon field, to derive the semiclassical Hawking temperature, is explicitly shown. Also, the tunneling of photon and gravitino beyond this semiclassical approximation are presented separately. Quantum corrections of the action for both cases are found to be proportional to the semiclassical contribution. Modifications to the Hawking temperature and Bekenstein-Hawking area law are thereby obtained. Using t…
In the presence of back reaction, we first produce the one-loop corrections for the event horizon and Hawking temperature of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. Then, based on the covariant anomaly cancelation method and the effective action technique, the modified expressions for the fluxes of gauge current and energy momentum tensor, due to the effect of back reaction, are obtained. The results are consistent with the Hawking fluxes of a (1+1)-dimensional blackbody at the temperature with quantum corrections, thus confirming the robustness of the covariant anomaly cancelation method and the e…
We study the Hawking radiation in a new class of black hole solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. The black hole has been argued to have vanishing mass and entropy, but finite Hawking temperature. To check if it really emits radiation, we analyse the Hawking radiation using the original method of quantization of scalar field in the black hole background and the quantum tunneling method, and confirm that it emits radiation at the Hawking temperature. A general formula is derived for the Hawking temperature and backreaction in the tunneling approach. Physical implications of these resul…
Since Parikh and Wilczek's tunneling method was proposed, there have been many generalizations, such as its application to massive charged particles' tunneling and other spacetimes. Moreover, a variant tunneling method was also recently proposed by Angheben et al that it was independent of coordinates. However, there are some subtleties in the calculation of Hawking radiation, and particularly is the so-called factor of 2 problem during calculating the Hawking temperature. The most popular opinion on this problem is that it is just a problem of the choice of coordinates. However, following oth…
The behavior of a scalar field theory near the event horizon in a rotating black hole background can be effectively described by a two dimensional field theory in a gauge field background. Based on this fact, we proposal that the quantum tunneling from rotating black hole can be treated as "charged" particle' s tunneling process in its effectively two dimensional metric. Using this viewpoint and considering the corresponding "gauge charge" conservation, we calculate the non-thermal tunneling rate of Kerr black hole and Myers-Perry black hole, and results are consistent with Parikh-Wilczek's or…
We calculate the back-reaction of long wavelength cosmological perturbations on a general relativistic measure of the local expansion rate of the Universe. Specifically, we consider a cosmological model in which matter is described by two scalar matter fields, one being the inflaton and the other one representing a matter field which is used as a clock. We analyze back-reaction in a phase of inflaton-driven slow-roll inflation, and find that the leading infrared back-reaction terms contributing to the evolution of the expansion rate do not vanish when measured at a fixed value of the clock fie…
We study a 3-brane moving in the five-dimensional bulk of the Randall-Sundrum II model. By including back-reaction of the brane on the bulk geometry we obtain a tachyon model with a linear barotropic equation of state.
The dynamical effects of the tensor modes of the geometry are investigated in the context of curvature bounces. Since the bouncing behaviour implies sharp deviations from a radiation-dominated evolution, significant back-reaction effects of relic gravitons may be expected at short wavelengths. After developing a general iterative framework for the calculation of dynamical back-reaction effects, explicit analytical and numerical examples are investigated for different parametrizations of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensor(s) of the produced gravitons. The reported results suggest that dynamical …
We present a solution to the dark energy problem in terms of the Effective Energy Momentum Tensor (EMT) of cosmological perturbations. The approach makes use of the gravitational back-reaction of long wavelength (super-Hubble) fluctuation modes on the background metric. Our results indicate that, following preheating, the energy density associated with back-reaction is sub-dominant and behaves as a tracker during the radiation era. At the onset of matter domination, however, the effects of back-reaction begin to grow relative to the matter density and the associated equation of state quickly a…
We derive the effective energy-momentum tensor for cosmological perturbations and prove its gauge-invariance. The result is applied to study the influence of perturbations on the behaviour of the Friedmann background in inflationary Universe scenarios. We found that the back reaction of cosmological perturbations on the background can become important already at energies below the self-reproduction scale.
Parikh and Wilczek formulated Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling across the event horizon proving the spectrum to be nonthermal. These nonthermality factors emerging due to back reaction effects have been claimed to be responsible for correlations among the emitted quanta. It has been proposed by several authors in literature that these correlations actually carry out information locked in a black hole and hence provide a resolution to the long debated black hole information paradox. This paper demonstrates that this is a fallacious proposition. Finally, it formulates the implications of t…
After discussing the various issues regarding and requirements on pure quantum gravitational observables in homogeneous-isotropic conditions, we construct a composite operator observable satisfying most of them. We also expand it to first order in the loop counting parameter and suggest it as a physical quantifier of gravitational back-reaction in an initially inflating cosmology.
Using Relativistic Quantum Geometry (RQG), we study the emergence of back-reaction modes with solitonic properties, on astrophysical and cosmological scales, in a model of pre-inflation where the universe emerge from a topological phase transition. We found that, modes of the geometrical field that describes back-reaction effects related to larger scales (cosmological scales), are more coherent than those related to astrophysical scales, so that they can be considered a coarse-grained soliton.
We calculate the emission rate of Hawking radiation from the cosmological horizon by quantum tunneling approaches. Using the Hamilton-Jacobi and the null geodesic methods, two typical observations are obtained. First, the spectrum of radiation is not strictly pure thermal. Second, the value of the cosmological constant decreases. Our calculation is different from other similar works about Hawking radiation from the cosmological horizon in that the horizon does not shrink but expands by taking into account the back-reaction effect. We show that when a positive frequency particle is materialized…
The effects of the gravitational back reaction of cosmological perturbations are investigated in a cosmological model where the universe is dominated by phantom energy. We assume a COBE normalized spectrum of cosmological fluctuations at the present time and calculate the effective energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational back-reactions of cosmological perturbations whose wavelengths at the time when the back-reactions are evaluated are larger than the Hubble radius. Our results reveal that the effects of gravitational back-reactions will counteract that of phantom energy sooner or later an…
We consider a minisuperspace model for a closed universe with small and positive cosmological constant, filled with a massive scalar field conformally coupled to gravity. In the quantum version of this model, the universe may undergo a tunneling transition through an effective barrier between regions of small and large scale factor. We solve numerically the minisuperspace Wheeler--De Witt equation with tunneling boundary conditions for the wave function of the universe, and find that tunneling in quantum cosmology is quite different from that in quantum mechanics. Namely, the matter degree of …
We study the effects which the back-reaction of long wavelength fluctuations exert on stochastic inflation. In the cases of power-law and Starobinsky inflation these effects are too weak to terminate the stochastic growth of the inflaton field. However, in the case of the cyclic Ekpyrotic scenario, the back-reaction effects prevent the unlimited growth of the scalar field.
Starting from the chiral covariant effective action approach of Banerjee and Kulkarni [Phys. Lett. B 659, 827(2008)], we provide a derivation of the Hawking radiation from a charged black hole in the presence of gravitational back reaction. The modified expressions for charge and energy flux, due to effect of one loop back reaction are obtained.
We propose a simple and systematic way of accounting for the back reaction on the background field due to the pair creation in the four--dimensional scalar QED. This method is straightforwardly generalizable to the gravity backgrounds. In the case of QED with the instantly switched on constant electric field background we obtain a remarkably simple formula for its decay rate.
We consider back-reaction by non-supersymmetric D7/anti-D7 probe branes in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein model at finite temperature. Using the smearing technique, we obtain an analytical solution for the back-reacted background to leading order in N_f/N_c. This back-reaction explicitly breaks the conformal invariance and introduces a dimension 6 operator in the dual field theory which is an irrelevant deformation of the original conformal field theory. We further probe this back-reacted background by introducing an additional set of probe brane/anti-brane. This additional probe sector undergoes…
This paper addresses the radiation back reaction problem for cosmological branes. A general framework is provided in which results are given for the radiation reaction with massles and massive scalar fields with flat extra dimensions and massless conformal fields in anti-de Sitter extra dimensions. For massless scalar field radiation the back reaction terms in the equation of motion are non-analytic. The interpretation of the radiation reaction terms is discussed and the equations of motion solved in simple cases. Nucleosynthesis bounds on dark radiation give a lower bound on the string vacuum…
We introduce a self-consistent stochastic coarse-graining method, which includes both metric and scalar field fluctuations, to investigate the back reaction of long wavelength perturbations in single-scalar driven inflation, up to the second (one loop) order. We demonstrate that, although back reaction cannot be significant during the last 70 e-foldings of inflation with a smooth potential, there exist non-smooth inflaton potentials which allow significant back reaction, and are also consistent with cosmological observations. Such non-smooth potentials may lead to the generation of massive pri…
It has been a puzzle that rotating detector may respond even in the appropriate vacuum defined via canonical quantization. We solve this puzzle by taking back reaction of the detector into account. The influence of the back reaction, even in the detector's mass infinite limit, appears in the response function. It makes the detector possible to respond in the vacuum if the detector is rotating, though the detector in linear uniform motion never respond in the vacuum as expected from Poincare invariance.
We investigate the nonequilibrium back reaction on the Schwarzschild black hole from the radiation field. The back reactions are characterized by the membrane close to the black hole. When the membrane is thin, we found that larger temperature difference can lead to more significant negative surface tension, larger thermodynamic dissipation cost and back reaction in energy and entropy as well as larger black hole area. This may be relevant to the primordial black holes in early universe. Moreover, our nonequilibrium model can resolve the inconsistency issue of the black hole back reaction unde…
It has recently been suggested that Planck scale physics may effect the evolution of cosmological fluctuations in the early stages of cosmological inflation in a non-trivial way, leading to an excited state for modes whose wavelength is super-Planck but sub-Hubble. In this case, the issue of how this excited state back-reacts on the background space-time arises. In fact, it has been suggested that such back-reaction effects may lead to tight constraints on the magnitude of possible deviations from the usual predictions of inflation. In this note we discuss some subtle aspects of this back-reac…
We study the effects of gravitational back-reaction in models of Quintessence. The effective energy-momentum tensor with which cosmological fluctuations back-react on the background metric will in some cases lead to a termination of the phase of acceleration. The fluctuations we make use of are the perturbations in our present Universe. Their amplitude is normalized by recent measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background, their slope is taken to be either scale-invariant, or characterized by a slightly blue tilt. In the latter case, we find that the back-reaction effect of fl…
The presence of cosmological fluctuations influences the background cosmology in which the perturbations evolve. This back-reaction arises as a second order effect in the cosmological perturbation expansion. The effect is cumulative in the sense that all fluctuation modes contribute to the change in the background geometry, and as a consequence the back-reaction effect can be large even if the amplitude of the fluctuation spectrum is small. We review two approaches used to quantify back-reaction. In the first approach, the effect of the fluctuations on the background is expressed in terms of a…
We calculate the back reaction of cosmological perturbations on a general relativistic variable which measures the local expansion rate of the Universe. Specifically, we consider a cosmological model in which matter is described by a single field. We analyze back reaction both in a matter dominated Universe and in a phase of scalar field-driven chaotic inflation. In both cases, we find that the leading infrared terms contributing to the back reaction vanish when the local expansion rate is measured at a fixed value of the matter field which is used as a clock, whereas they do not appear to van…
There are many situations in which a strong electromagnetic field may be approximated as a fixed background. Going beyond this approximation, i.e. accounting for the back-reaction of quantum process on the field, is however challenging. Here we develop an approach to this problem which is a straightforward extension of background field methods. The approach follows from the observation that scattering in an on-shell background is equivalent to scattering between coherent states; we show that by deforming these states one can model back-reaction. Focussing on intense laser-matter interactions, …
We holographically study the effect of back reaction on the hydrodynamical properties of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ strongly coupled super Yang-Mills (SYM) thermal plasma. The back reaction we consider arises from the presence of static heavy quarks uniformly distributed over $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM plasma. In order to study the hydrodynamical properties, we use heavy quark as well as heavy quark-antiquark bound state as probes and compute the jet quenching parameter, screening length and binding energy. We also consider the rotational dynamics of heavy probe quark in the back-reacted plasma and analyse …
