The Hessian of the entropy function can be thought of as a metric tensor on state space. In the context of thermodynamical fluctuation theory Ruppeiner has argued that the Riemannian geometry of this metric gives insight into the underlying statistical mechanical system; the claim is supported by numerous examples. We study these geometries for some families of black holes and find that the Ruppeiner geometry is flat for Reissner--Nordström black holes in any dimension, while curvature singularities occur for the Kerr black holes. Kerr black holes have instead flat Weinhold curvature.
The Ruppeiner metric as determined by the Hessian of the Gibbs surface provides a geometric description of thermodynamic systems in equilibrium. An interesting example is a black hole in equilibrium with its own Hawking radiation. In this article, we present results from the Ruppeiner study of various black hole families from different gravity theories e.g. 2D dilaton gravity, BTZ, general relativity and higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell gravity.
We resolve the controversial issue of the geometric approach to the black hole thermodynamics. The geometric description of the equilibrium thermodynamics comes from Ruppeiner geometry based on a metric on the thermodynamic state space. For this purpose, we consider the Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole which provides two different ensembles: canonical ensemble for fixed-charge case and grand canonical ensemble for fixed-potential case. Two cases are independent and cannot be mixed into each other. Hence, we calculate different Ruppeiner curvatures for two ensembles. However, we could…
The Ruppeiner geometry and the fluctuation for a four-dimensional charged AdS black hole in the framework of the extensive thermodynamics have been investigated. By fixing the AdS radius of Vissers construction, the extensive thermodynamics of the RN-AdS black hole is established, and the central charge plays the role of particle number. With the thermodynamic variables density, we reexamine the phase transition of the black hole, and the result will hold for the black holes under different gravitational models. Moreover, we have studied the Ruppeiner geometry and the black hole fluctuation, a…
In the view of the Gliner vacuum, we remove the deformations in the first law of mechanics for regular black holes, where one part of deformations associated with black hole mass will be absorbed into enthalpy or internal energy, and the other part associated with parameters rather than mass will constitute a natural $V$-$P$ term. The improved first law of mechanics redisplays its resemblance to the first law of thermodynamic systems, which implies a restored correspondence of the mechanic variables to the thermodynamic ones. In particular, the linear relation between the entropy and horizon a…
Due to the non-independence of entropy and thermodynamic volume for spherically symmetric black holes in the AdS spacetime, when applying the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry theory to these black holes, we often encounter an unavoidable problem of the singularity about the line element of thermodynamic geometry. In this paper, we propose a basic and natural scheme for dealing with the thermodynamic geometry of spherically symmetric AdS black holes. We point out that enthalpy, not internal energy, is the fundamental thermodynamic characteristic function for the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry…
The phase transition and thermodynamic geometry of a 4-dimensional AdS topological charged black hole in de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity have been studied. After introducing a normalized thermodynamic scalar curvature, it is speculated that its value is related to the interaction between the underlying black hole molecules if the black hole molecules exist. We show that there does exist a crucial parameter given in terms of the topology, charge, and massive parameters of the black hole, which characterizes the thermodynamic properties of the black hole. It is found that wh…
We investigate thermodynamic curvatures of the Kerr and Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes in spacetime dimensions higher than four. These black holes possess thermodynamic geometries similar to those in four dimensional spacetime. The thermodynamic geometries are the Ruppeiner geometry and the conformally related Weinhold geometry. The Ruppeiner geometry for $d=5$ Kerr black hole is curved and divergent in the extremal limit. For $d \geq 6$ Kerr black hole there is no extremality but the Ruppeiner curvature diverges where one suspects that the black hole becomes unstable. The Weinhold geomet…
Ruppeiner geometry has been found to be a novel promising approach to uncover the microstructure of fluid systems and black holes. In this work, combining with the micro model of the Van der Waals fluid, we shall propose a first microscopic interpretation for the empirical observation of Ruppeiner geometry. Then employing the microscopic interpretation, we disclose the potential microstructure for the anti-de Sitter black hole systems. Of particular interest, we obtain the microscopic interaction potentials for the underlying black hole molecules. This significantly strengthens the study towar…
We discuss the use of information geometry in black hole physics and present the outcomes. The type of information geometry we utilize in this approach is the thermodynamic (Ruppeiner) geometry defined on the state space of a given thermodynamic system in equilibrium. The Ruppeiner geometry can be used to analyze stability and critical phenomena in black hole physics with results consistent with those from the Poincare stability analysis for black holes and black rings. Furthermore other physical phenomena are well encoded in the Ruppeiner metric such as the sign of specific heat and the extre…
In this work, we obtain the thermodynamic geometry of the extended black hole solution under f(R) gravity. This is the foundation of our work. We also obtain the exact form of the f(R) model for some solutions. In the thermodynamic analysis, we calculate the thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and entropy of these solutions and compare them with the corresponding BTZ black holes. After that, we study the Ruppeiner geometry, such as the f(R)-gravity (extended black hole solution) of the BTZ black hole, and analyze the thermodynamic comparison of the Ruppeiner geometry with the van der …
We show that the notion of "Hookean law" $F=kx$, suitably defined in asymptotically flat singly spinning Myers-Perry black hole spacetimes in dimensions $d\geqslant 5$, is related to the Emparan-Myers fragmentation (splitting of a black hole into two becomes thermodynamically preferable). Specifically, the values of black hole parameters when fragmentation occurs correspond to the maximal value of $F$. Furthermore this always happens before $F$ reaches $1/4$ in Planck units. These results suggest that a version of "maximum force conjecture" may be relevant for black hole thermodynamics. We als…

The connection between the shadow radius and the Ruppeiner geometry of a charged static spherically symmetric black hole is investigated. The normalized curvature scalar is adopted, and its close relation to the Van der Waals-like and Hawking-Page phase transition of Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole is studied. The results show that the shadow radius is a useful tool to reveal the correct information of the phase structure and the underlying microstructure of the black hole, which opens a new window to investigate the strong gravity system from the observational point of view.
Taking the quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect into account, we study the black hole phase transition and Ruppeiner geometry for the Euler-Heisenberg anti-de Sitter black hole in the extended phase space. For negative and small positive QED parameter, we observe a small/large black hole phase transition and reentrant phase transition, respectively. While a large positive value of the QED parameter ruins the phase transition. The phase diagrams for each case are explicitly exhibited. Then we construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the thermodynamic parameter space. Different features of the corres…
We study the thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of Park black hole in Hořava gravity. By incorporating the ideas of differential geometry, we have investigated the thermodynamics using Weinhold geometry and Ruppeiner geometry. We have also analyzed it in the context of newly developed geometrothermodynamics(GTD). Divergence of specific heat is associated with the second order phase transition of black hole. Here in the context of Park black hole, both Weinhold's metric and Ruppeiner's metric well explain this phase transition. But these explanations depend on the choice of potential. He…
In this work, we obtained the black hole solutions in the expansion f(R)-gravitation (R is not regarded as a constant here), and studied their thermodynamics, especially the phase transition and criticality in anti-de Sitter Behavior (AdS) expands the phase space. We obtained accurate Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) corresponding solutions in dilaton f(R)-gravity, which is the basis of our work. We also obtained the exact form of the f(R) model for some solutions. In thermodynamic analysis, we calculate thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and entropy of these solutions and compa…
Based on Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter(RN-AdS) black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter, we study the thermodynamics and phase transition by extending the phase space defined by the charge square $Q^{2}$ and the conjugate quantity $ψ$, where $ψ$ is a function of horizon radius. The first law of thermodynamics and the equation of state are derived in the form $Q^{2}=Q^{2}(T,ψ)$. By investigating the critical behaviour of perfect fluid dark matter around Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole, we find that these thermodynamics system are similar to Van der Waals system, and c…
Recently, extended phase space thermodynamics of Lovelock AdS black holes has been of great interest. To provide insight from a different perspective and gain a unified phase transition picture, non-extended phase space thermodynamics of $(n+1)$-dimensional charged topological Lovelock AdS black holes is investigated detailedly in the grand canonical ensemble. Specifically, the specific heat at constant electric potential is calculated and phase transition in the grand canonical ensemble is discussed. To probe the impact of the various parameters, we utilize the control variate method and solv…
Born-Infeld AdS black hole exhibits a reentrant phase transition for certain values of the Born-Infeld parameter $b$. This behaviour is an additional feature compared to the van der Waals like phase transition observed in charged AdS black holes. Therefore, it is worth observing the underlying microscopic origin of this reentrant phase transition. Depending on the value of the parameter $b$, the black hole system has four different cases: no phase transition, a reentrant phase transition with two scenarios, or a van der Waals-like (standard) phase transition. In this article, by employing a no…
In this paper we show that the vanishing of the scalar curvature of Ruppeiner-like metrics does not characterize the ideal gas. Furthermore, we claim through an example that flatness is not a sufficient condition to establish the absence of interactions in the underlying microscopic model of a thermodynamic system, which poses a limitation on the usefulness of Ruppeiner's metric and conjecture. Finally, we address the problem of the choice of coordinates in black hole thermodynamics. We propose an alternative energy representation for Kerr-Newman black holes that mimics fully Weinhold's approa…
In this note we study thermodynamic geometry of the type 0A black hole solution in string theory using a variety of different methods (Ruppeiner, Weinhold and Geometrothermodynamics). Our results indicate that the curvature invariants are finite for all physical solutions, suggesting that there is no phase transition. It is also found that the cutoff of the entropy, which is the singular limit of the theory, appears geometrically in the Weinhold picture as the thermodynamic cone itself.
We study the thermodynamics and the thermodynamic geometries of charged rotating BTZ (CR-BTZ) black holes in (2+1)-gravity. We investigate the thermodynamics of these systems within the context of the Weinhold and Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometries and the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Considering the behavior of the heat capacity and the Hawking temperature, we show that Weinhold and Ruppeiner geometries cannot describe completely the thermodynamics of these black holes and of their limiting case of vanishing electric charge. In contrast, the Legendre invarianc…
A coordinate system that blockwise-simplifies the Kerr-Newman black hole's thermodynamical state space Ruppeiner metric geometry is constructed, with discussion of the limiting cases corresponding to simpler black holes. It is deduced that one of the three conformal Killing vectors of the Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr cases (whose thermodynamical state space metrics are 2 by 2 and conformally flat) survives generalization to the Kerr-Newman case's 3 by 3 thermodynamical state space metric.
In this paper, we study the thermodynamic geometry of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes (and Reissner-Nordström black holes, for the sake of comparison) in AdS: in both $(T,V)$- and $(S,P)$-planes. The thermodynamic phase space is known to have an underlying contact and metric structure; Ruppeiner geometry then naturally arises in this framework. Sign of Ruppeiner curvature can be used to probe the nature of interactions between the black hole microstructures. It is found that there are both attraction and repulsion dominated regions which are in general determined by the electric charge, Gauss…
The Hessian of the entropy function can be thought of as a metric tensor on the state space. In the context of thermodynamical fluctuation theory Ruppeiner has argued that the Riemannian geometry of this metric gives insight into the underlying statistical mechanical system; the claim is supported by numerous examples. We study this geometry for some families of black holes. It is flat for the BTZ and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, while curvature singularities occur for the Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter and Kerr black holes.
We study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole in $AdS_5\times{S^5}$ spacetime by treating the cosmological constant as the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the chemical potential is always negative in the stable branch of black hole thermodynamics and it has a chance to be positive, but appears in the unstable branch. We calculate scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric and Quevedo metric, respectively and we f…
In this paper, we study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a black hole surrounded by the perfect fluid in Rastall theory. In particular, we calculate the physical quantity like mass, temperature and heat capacity of the system for two different cases. From the resulting heat capacity, we emphasize stability of the system. Following Weinhold, Ruppiner, Quevedo and HPEM formalism, thermodynamic geometry of this black hole in Rastall gravity is also analyzed. We find that the singular points of the curvature scalar of Ruppeiner and HPEM metrics entirely coincides with zero points of th…
We study the thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole in the extended phase space by treating the cosmological constant as being related to the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the contribution of the charge of the black hole to the chemical potential is always positive and the existence of charge make the chemical potential become positive more easily. We calculate the scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric …
Charged dilatonic black hole (BH) has rather rich phase diagrams which may contain zeroth-order, first-order as well as reentrant phase transitions (RPTs) depending on the value of the coupling constant $α$ between the electromagnetic field and the dilaton. We try to give a microscopic explanation for these phase transitions by adopting Ruppeiner's approach. By studying the behaviors of the Ruppeiner invariant $R$ along the co-existing lines, we find that the various phase transitions may be qualitatively well explained as a result of two competing factors: the first one is the low-temperature…
Originally considered for van der Waals fluids and charged black holes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 071103 (2019)], we extend and generalize our approach to higher-dimensional charged AdS black holes. Beginning with thermodynamic fluctuations, we construct the line element of the Ruppeiner geometry and obtain a universal formula for the scalar curvature $R$. We first review the thermodynamics of a van der Waals fluid and calculate the coexistence and spinodal curves. From this we are able to clearly display the phase diagram. Notwithstanding the invalidity of the equation of state in the coexistence…
An important phase transition in black hole thermodynamics is associated with the divergence of the specific heat with fixed charge and angular momenta, yet one can demonstrate that neither Ruppeiner's entropy metric nor Weinhold's energy metric reveals this phase transition. In this paper, we introduce a new thermodynamical metric based on the Hessian matrix of several free energy. We demonstrate, by studying various charged and rotating black holes, that the divergence of the specific heat corresponds to the curvature singularity of this new metric. We further investigate metrics on all ther…
In order to study the phase transition through thermodynamic geometry, we consider the charged AdS black hole with global monopole. We first introduce thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole with global monopole by discussing the dependence of Hawking temperature, specific heat and P-v curve on horizon radius and monopole parameter. By implementing various thermodynamic geometry methods, for instance, Weinhold, Ruppiner, Quevedo and HPEM formulations, we derive corresponding scalar curvatures for charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. Here, we observe that, in contrast to Weinhold and…
In this paper, we consider three types (static, static charged and rotating charged) of black holes in f(R) gravity. We study the thermodynamical behavior, stability conditions and phase transition of these black holes. It will be shown that, the number and type of phase transition points are related to different parameters, which shows the dependency of stability conditions to these parameters. Also, we extended our study to different thermodynamic geometry methods (Ruppeiner, Weinhold and GTD). Next, we investigate the compatibility of curvature scalar of geothermodynamic methods with phase …
We studied the thermodynamics of the black holes with Gauss-Bonnet correction term in $3+1-$ dimensional AdS spacetime. It is known that the term has no effect on the equation of motion, however, it modifies the entropy formula of Wald as it has an effect of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter term. We studied charged black holes, namely, Reissner-Nordström and Born-Infeld under this regime. We encountered divergences in heat capacity. After eliminating the possibility of first order phase transition, we applied two well trusted methods from standard thermodynamics, namely, Ehrenfest scheme and Ruppein…

This article puts forward a hypothesis. In this article, the derivative of the cosmological constant is positive, and there is a possibility that the constant evolves from negative in the early universe to positive in the later period. We see that when the black hole is an extreme black hole $r_{+}=r_{-}$, the curvature scalar vanishes to zero. In general, the curvature scalar is not equal to zero. When $r_{+}=3 r_{-}$, the curvature scalar is equal to negative infinity. According to Ruppeiner's theory, this time represents the phase transition of the system. It is very interesting that the div…
A detailed discussion on phase transition and microscopic structure of charged AdS black hole with a global monopole is presented in both extended and alternate phase spaces. In the analysis of critical behaviour, the classical van der Waals analogy is drawn from isotherms which is followed by Gibbs free energy study and coexistence curves. In both spaces, the symmetry breaking parameter $η$ acts as a hindrance for critical behaviour. The crux of van der Waals like behaviour is investigated by looking at the microscopic structure of the black hole via thermodynamic Ruppeiner geometry. The Rupp…
In this talk we present the latest results from our ongoing project on geometro-thermodynamics (also known as information geometry of thermodynamics or Ruppeiner geometry) of dilaton BHs in 4D in both Einstein and string frames and a dyonic dilaton BH and at the end we report very briefly results from this approach to the 2D dilaton BHs.
Thermodynamic geometry is applied to the Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole (BIAdS) in the four dimensions, which is a nonlinear generalization of the Reissner-NorstrÄom-AdS black hole (RNAdS). We compute the Weinhold as well as the Ruppeiner scalar curvature and find that the singular points are not the same with the ones obtained using the heat capacity. Legendre-invariant metric proposed by Quevedo and the metric obtained by using the free energy as the thermodynamic potential are obtained and the corresponding scalar curvatures diverge at the Davies points.
The thermodynamics of black holes is reformulated within the context of the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics. This reformulation is shown to be invariant with respect to Legendre transformations, and to allow several equivalent representations. Legendre invariance allows us to explain a series of contradictory results known in the literature from the use of Weinhold's and Ruppeiner's thermodynamic metrics for black holes. For the Reissner-Nordström black hole the geometry of the space of equilibrium states is curved, showing a non trivial thermodynamic interaction, and th…
We investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of a Lovelock-AdS black hole. Taking the first order logarithmic correction term in entropy we analyze the thermodynamic potentials like Helmholtz free energy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy. We find that all the thermodynamic potentials are decreasing functions of correction coefficient $α$. We also examined this correction coefficient tmust be positive by analysing $P-V$ diagram. Further we study the P-V criticality and stability and find that presence of logarithmic correction in it is necessary to have critical points …
In this work we study thermodynamics of 2+1-dimensional static black holes with a nonlinear electric field. Besides employing the standard thermodynamic approach, we investigate the black hole thermodynamics by studying its thermodynamic geometry. We compute the Weinhold and Ruppeiner metrics and compare the thermodynamic geometry with the standard description on the black hole thermodynamics. We further consider the cosmological constant as an additional extensive thermodynamic variable. In the thermodynamic equilibrium three dimensional space, we compute the efficiency of the heat engine and…
We study the phase transition of a regular Hayward-AdS black hole by introducing a new order parameter, the potential conjugate to the magnetic charge due to the non-linearly coupled electromagnetic field. We use Landau continuous phase transition theory to discuss the van der Waals like critical phenomena of the black hole. The popular interpretation of the AdS black hole phase transition as between a large and a small black hole is reinterpreted as the transition between a high potential phase and a low potential phase. The underlying microstructure for this phase transition is probed using …
In this paper, we consider a static black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We recapitulate the expression for corrected thermodynamic entropy of this black hole due to small fluctuations around equilibrium. Also, we study the geometrothermodynamics (GTD) of this black hole and investigate the adaptability of the curvature scalar of geothermodynamic methods with phase transition points of this black hole. Moreover, we study the effect of correction parameter on thermodynamic behaviour of this black hole. We observe that the singular point of the curvature scalar of Ruppeiner metric coincides completely …
The geometry of thermodynamic state space is studied for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in D-dimensional space times. Convexity of thermodynamic potentials and the analytic structure of the response functions is analysed. The thermodynamic potentials can be used to define a metric on the space of thermodynamic variables and two commonly used such metrics are the Weinhold metric, derived from the internal energy, and the Ruppeiner metric, derived from the entropy. The intrinsic curvature of these metrics is calculated for charged and for rotating black holes and it is shown that the …
The application of information geometric ideas to statistical mechanics using a metric on the space of states, pioneered by Ruppeiner and Weinhold, has proved to be a useful alternative approach to characterizing phase transitions. Some puzzling anomalies become apparent, however, when these methods are applied to the study of black hole thermodynamics. A possible resolution was suggested by Quevedo et al. who emphasized the importance of Legendre invariance in thermodynamic metrics. They found physically consistent results for various black holes when using a Legendre invariant metric, which …
In this paper, we analytically study the phase structure and construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the extended phase space for the five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole. Through calculating the scalar curvature of the Ruppeiner geometry and combining the phase transition, we show that the attractive interaction is dominant in the microstructure of the black hole system. More significantly, there is an intriguing property that the normalized scalar curvature has the same expression for the saturated small and large black hole curves. This implies that although the microstructure i…
Some thermodynamic properties of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole are studied to get the effective dimension of its corresponding statistical model. For this purpose, we make use of the geometrical approach to the thermodynamics: Considering the black hole as a thermodynamic system with two thermodynamic variables (the mass $M$ and the angular momemtum $J$), we obtain two-dimensional Riemannian thermodynamic geometry described by positive definite Ruppeiner metric. From the thermodynamic curvature we find that the extremal limit is the critical point. The effective spatial dimen…
