Quantum dissipation induces a critical destruction of a Kondo screened state, which is of interest in the contexts of quantum critical heavy fermion metals and magnetic nanostructures. The sub-ohmic Bose-Fermi Kondo model provides a setting to study this effect. We find that this many-body problem is exactly solvable when the spectrum of the dissipative bosonic bath, J(ω), is singular, corresponding to J(τ)=const.. We determine the local spin correlation functions, showing that the singular LONGITUDINAL fluctuations of the bosonic bath dominate over the transverse ones. Our results provide evidence that the local quantum critical solution, derived within the extended dynamical mean field approach to the Kondo lattice model, has a zero residual entropy.
We investigate transport through an exotic ``charge'' qubit composed of two strongly capacitively coupled quantum dots (QDs), each being independently connected to a side gate which in general exhibits a fluctuating electrostatic field ({\em i.e.}, Nyquist/Johnson noise). Two quantum phases are found: the ``Kondo'' phase where an orbital-Kondo entanglement emerges and a ``local moment'' phase in which the noise destroys the Kondo effect leaving the orbital spin unscreened and resulting in a clear suppression of the conductance. In the Kondo realm, the transfer of charge across the setting is a…
Quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations is playing a central role in elucidating the behavior of strange metals. A prominent case appears in Kondo lattice systems, which have been extensively analysed in terms of an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, a spin is simultaneously coupled to conduction electron bands and gapless vector bosons that represent magnetic fluctuations. The Bose-Fermi Kondo model features interacting fixed points of Kondo destruction with such properties as dynamical Planckian ($\hbar ω/ k_{\rm B} T$) scaling and loss …
We study the quantum chaos in the Bose-Fermi Kondo model in which the impurity spin interacts with conduction electrons and a bosonic bath at the intermediate temperature in the large $N$ limit. The out-of-time-ordered correlator is calculated based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ is extracted. Our calculation shows that the Lyapunov exponent monotonically increases as the Kondo coupling $J_K$ increases, and it can reach an order of $λ_L\sim T$ as $J_K$ approaches the $MCK$ point. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that $λ_L$ decreases monotonously as the impurity …
We study the behavior of the entropy of the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Kondo model within a dynamical large-$N$ limit, where $N$ is related to the symmetry group of the model. This model is a general quantum impurity model that describes a localized level coupled to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes in a powerlaw fashion near the Fermi energy and to a bosonic bath possessing a powerlaw spectral density below a cutoff energy. As a function of the couplings to the baths various quantum phase transitions can occur. We study how the impurity entropy changes across these zero-temp…

Motivated by recent experiments on magnetically frustrated heavy fermion metals, we theoretically study the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model with a nonmagnetic valence bond solid ground state on a ladder. A similar physical setting may be naturally occurring in YbAl$_3$C$_3$, CeAgBi$_2$, and TmB$_4$ compounds. In the insulating limit, the application of a magnetic field drives a quantum phase transition to an easy-plane antiferromagnet, which is described by a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Using a combination of field theoretical techniques and density matrix renormalization g…

Recent experiments in quantum critical heavy fermion metals have pushed to the fore the question about whether antiferromagnetic fluctuations can promote both spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconductivity. Here we address the issue through non-perturbative calculations in antiferromagnetically correlated Kondo systems. We identify Kondo-destruction quantum critical points in both the SU(2) symmetric and Ising-anisotropic cluster Bose-Fermi Anderson models. The spin-singlet pairing correlations are significantly enhanced near the quantum critical point in the SU(2) case; however, with adequat…
Metallic quantum criticality is a central theme in a variety of strongly correlated systems. Recent experiments have raised the fundamental question of how the charge response can be singular in cases where the Landau framework of quantum criticality allows singularity only in the spin channel. Motivated by this emerging issue, we study the particle-hole-asymmetric regime of a Bose-Fermi Anderson model with power-law forms for both the bosonic bath spectrum and the fermionic band density of states. We realize a particle-hole-asymmetric quantum-critical state where quasiparticles are lost due t…
Two of the most prominent phases of bosonic matter are the superfluid with perfect flow and the insulator with no flow. A now decades-old mystery unexpectedly arose when experimental observations indicated that bosons could organize into the formation of an entirely different intervening third phase: the Bose metal with dissipative flow. The most viable theory for such a Bose metal to date invokes the use of the extrinsic property of impurity-based disorder; however, a generic intrinsic quantum Bose metal state is still lacking. We propose a universal homogeneous theory for a Bose metal in whi…
A quantum spin impurity coupled to a critical free field (the Bose-Kondo model) can be represented as a 0+1D field theory with long-range-in-time interactions that decay as $|t-t'|^{-(2-δ)}$. This theory is a simpler analogue of nonlinear sigma models with topological Wess-Zumino-Witten terms in higher dimensions. In this note we show that the RG flows for the impurity problem exhibit an annihilation between two nontrivial RG fixed points at a critical value $δ_c$ of the interaction exponent. The calculation is controlled at large spin $S$. This clarifies the phase diagram of the Bose-Kondo mo…
